Invest in CommUNITY
Dear Neighbors,
Spring is here and that brings a renewed feeling for life. This issue we get real. I started this publication with a desire to feel connected in my community. I needed people. I needed to feel of service. My twins had grown up, flew the coup. While so proud of them, I felt a bit lost. Pulling from previous work and passion in community, marketing, and partnerships this publication was born. You have filled my cup with more support and connection than I could ever imagine. In filling mine, you have allowed me to fill the many cups of our many supporters and community members we highlight monthly in this publication. So with this month’s theme, Investment… I wanted to connect with a powerful message. INVEST in commUNITY: We need each other.
There are many pillars that fortify a whole life. We pulled in experts from various fields. Financial, Investment, Security, Health, Career, Cultural, Spiritual, and a love letter to the feminine energy that holds us all, Mother Earth with a fashion twist, (yes, please!) There is something for every interest and I hope that as you read each page, you feel inspired by the community here supporting your wellbeing on every level.
Talking to a fellow business owner today about the challenges we face in keeping our business going, the undertones of that topic quickly rose to the surface for me… Our why: Desiring to have a positive impact on people. I quickly went to the mantra Mel Robbins shared on her podcast “what if it all works out” I thought for a moment what this means to me: the members of this community would feel connected to their neighbors, people would feel less isolated, mental health struggles would dissipate, people would act with a greater reflection of kindness, happiness would be a common state of mind. People would realize even the few things we might have in common are enough to thread connection, love and support of one another.
If we build equity in our community we have life fulfillment.
Fortify yourself so you can give to others. That is what we are here for. If you or your business want to be a part of this community vibration, reach out. We want to support you.
With warmth from my heart and a chilled rosé in hand, I love you.

Investing in Yourself
A Journey of Health, Growth, and Self-Discovery
“You have cancer.” Those words shattered my world at just 28 years old. It felt like hitting rock bottom, but it was only the beginning of my journey. Alongside the daunting diagnosis, I was battling stress, an autoimmune disorder, chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. My lifestyle choices fueled the fire-I often neglected healthy eating and sleep.
The cancer diagnosis served as a wake-up call and a pivotal moment that ignited a commitment to prioritize and invest in my health. I immersed myself in research, went down many internet rabbit holes, experimented with alternative therapies, exercised outdoors, and made lifestyle changes aimed at restoring balance. In this exploration, I realized how significantly stress and trauma could contribute to illness.
DISCOVERING BODYTALK
A year post-diagnosis, I stumbled upon an energy psychology modality called BodyTalk. In addition to recovering from cancer, I was grappling with chronic back pain and scoliosis. To my astonishment, after three sessions, my back pain and anxiety dissipated. It was a powerful reminder of our physical and emotional well-being’s interconnectedness.
Inspired by my transformation, I trained and became a BodyTalk practitioner. Now, seven years into my practice, I help clients across the globe. BodyTalk is more than just an alternative health modality; it’s a pathway

to awaken self-healing potential by enhancing communication within the bodymind. It works harmoniously with Western medicine and holistic approaches. Emotions can be stored in the body, creating health barriers. I help clients identify and address root causes to improve health.
Sessions are simple and conducted via Zoom, with little effort on the client’s part. I energetically read and “listen” to my clients’ energy while using applied kinesiology (muscle testing) and tapping to interrupt and reset the body’s electrical patterns. Subtle shifts can be noticed after one session, with more profound changes usually occurring after a few sessions. I offer 30-minute and 60-minute sessions.
CLIENT SUCCESS STORIES
The impact of BodyTalk is profound, as illustrated by these success stories:
“When I started working with Laura, I was having trouble breathing and had oxygen levels so low, I was close to being hospitalized. After working with Laura for 1 year, I’m back to sleeping flat in my bed without oxygen. I’ve lost over 50 pounds, I’m more mobile than I’ve been in years.”
- Fran
“Laura’s BodyTalk sessions have become an integral part of my selfcare routine. Not only have her sessions helped me with skeletal misalignments and circulation issues, but I also contribute BodyTalk to helping me get through what could have been a fatal intestinal infection.”
- Kimberly
“I saw Laura to help my menopause symptoms. My hot flashes went away overnight. I went from tossing, turning, and sweating at night to sleeping
soundly and comfortably with a heavy blanket. I feel much better in many ways. Amazing!” - Roxanne
“I started working with Laura, and the day after the first session, I felt the fog lift. Laura was able to identify trapped emotions from my past and I was surprised how intuitive she really was. My depression is gone, my relationships are better (including my marriage), and I have a new outlook on life.” - Melissa
CHOOSING HEALTH AS A LIFESTYLE
My journey and the transformations I’ve witnessed in my clients strengthen my belief in a holistic health approach. It’s crucial to view health comprehensively, encompassing a healthy diet, exercise, and emotional and stress management. I encourage seeking a practitioner to address symptoms and the energetic and emotional shifts necessary to strengthen health.
If you’re facing illness or pain and wish to explore stress’s profound role in your symptoms, I would be honored to guide you on your journey. I connect with individuals from all walks of life and offer the convenience of BodyTalk sessions from the comfort of your home.

INVESTING IN Millcreek
How Granite Credit Union Supports Local Growth
For 90 years, Granite Credit Union has been deeply rooted in the Millcreek community, providing financial services and supporting local initiatives. With its headquarters in Millcreek, the credit union continues to invest in the area, ensuring residents and businesses have access to essential financial resources.
Granite Credit Union’s commitment to Millcreek is more than financial—it’s about community involvement. Vice President of Business Development Mary Woodard emphasizes this dedication: “We are deeply committed to giving back to the community through various initiatives and programs. Millcreek City is a great partner, and we are proud to sponsor their Venture Out Program and Multicultural Nights. These events allow us to engage with the community and provide financial education.”
Beyond event sponsorships, Granite Credit Union actively supports the Millcreek Promise Program, which focuses on education, health, and economic opportunities for all residents. This investment in the community reflects the credit union’s broader mission to serve and uplift those in need.
Marketing Director Spencer Carver highlights the credit union’s historical connection to the area: “Our roots stem from the Granite School District, which has always been in this vicinity. It made sense to continue investing in the community where we started.”
Granite Credit Union offers services tailored to support community members at every stage of their financial journey. One of its newest initiatives is the Young Investor product, designed for individuals aged 0-26. "We pay a higher interest on their first $1,000 in that savings account to help empower our youth to save more." Woodard explains. “It’s a great way to encourage financial literacy from an early age.”
For those looking to achieve homeownership, the credit union provides a First-Time Home Buyer program. Additionally, they offer business loans that have helped numerous local businesses survive and thrive, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Many businesses in this community were able to survive as a result of our partnership,” says Carver. “The Payment Protection Program (PPP) loans we provided allowed them to weather the storm and emerge stronger.”
Mobile Branch Ribbon Cutting Held at Millcreek Common
Granite Credit Union’s mission statement—“Always There so You Can Make Life Happen”—is reflected in its efforts to serve underserved populations. Many residents, including refugees, struggle with financial literacy and are vulnerable to predatory financial practices. To combat this, the credit union has launched ITIN lending (Individual Tax Identification Number loans) and earned the Juntos Avanzamos designation, which signifies their commitment to providing inclusive financial services. “We are the first credit union in Salt Lake County to receive this designation,” Carver proudly notes.
In addition to lending programs, Granite Credit Union actively promotes financial education through initiatives such as the Money Club for junior high students and an adult financial literacy program. “We’ve seen great success with these programs, helping individuals build and improve their credit and work towards homeownership,” explains Woodard.
While many people associate credit unions with basic checking and savings accounts, Granite Credit Union offers a comprehensive suite of financial services. “We provide mortgage products, business loans, and technology that makes managing money more accessible,” Carver explains. “We also offer free seminars and financial advisors for our members.”
Ultimately, Granite Credit Union wants to be a resource for the Millcreek community in every facet of their financial lives. Whether through educational initiatives, homeownership assistance, or business support, they continue investing in the people who make Millcreek a thriving and vibrant community.

How Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum
Strengthens the Community
For over 50 years, Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum has been a top destination for interactive learning and creative play in Utah. More than a play space, it serves as an essential resource for families and educators, promoting early childhood education through immersive exhibits and hands-on experiences. The mission of The Children’s Museum is to inspire children of all ages and abilities to imagine, discover, and connect with their world to make a difference.
A PREMIER DESTINATION FOR HANDS-ON EXPLORATION
Home to the largest interactive train exhibit in the Intermountain West, the Stillson River Railroad display allows children to immerse themselves in the iconic railway history and beautifully constructed engineering through the interactive model train. Young conductors can take charge of their own journeys, exploring new scenes and characters, igniting creativity and problem-solving skills as they navigate the historic landscape. The iDig Dinos Exhibit provides a unique chance to take part in an up-close encounter with real fossils, explore the process of field
paleontologists, and discover how it all connects through Utah’s unique prehistoric landscape. This exhibition brings paleontology to life in an accessible way that is unique to The Children’s Museum. In addition to these favorites, The Children’s Museum features live bird shows, a program allowing children to read to therapy dogs, and rotating drop-in art classes that offer engaging, hands-on experiences with a variety of materials. In addition to yearround programming, The Children’s Museum also offers seasonal summer camps to enhance learning, enabling children to explore science, art, and imaginative play during school breaks.
THE LARGEST CHILDREN'S ROOFTOP GARDEN IN AMERICA
One of the most exciting and transformative projects at Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum is the development of its children’s rooftop garden, which is set to be the largest of its kind in the United States. This urban oasis will allow young learners to explore pollinators, plant cycles, and their role in environmental stewardship through interactive activities. It offers a unique chance for children to engage directly with the environment, fostering a deeper appreciation for nature and sustainability. The rooftop garden will serve as a living classroom where children can nurture and observe plant growth. This project will not only be educational but also inspire creativity and curiosity in young minds, making it a place where science and nature come to life. At this stage, companies aligned with the museum’s mission can still contribute and be recognized within the garden, helping create a lasting legacy. Supporting the rooftop garden will ensure future generations have a space to connect with nature, reinforcing your commitment to education while engaging directly with the local community. By contributing to this exciting project, donors will help cultivate a future generation of environmental stewards and leave an impact on the community for years to come.
LOOKING AHEAD
With world-class exhibits, immersive experiences, and a commitment to accessibility, Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum remains a leader in interactive learning and informal education. Families seeking opportunities for hands-on discoveries will find an unmatched experience at the museum.

INVESTMENT Expert Panel
EXPERT ADVICE ON FINANCE, MORTGAGES, AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
ARTICLE BY CONTRIBUTORS, EDITED BY JULIE JANKE
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CONTRIBUTORS
For this expert panel, we interviewed Stacy Chamberlain, an Edward Jones Financial Advisor; Kevin Sleater, a Loan Officer for Security National Mortgage; and Jason Woodland, a business mentor for Woodland Advisors. They each offer valuable insights into finance, mortgages, and business growth.
WITH MARKET FLUCTUATIONS, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR INVESTORS LOOKING TO MINIMIZE RISK AND STAY ON TRACK?
So often investors know they want to minimize risk, but often they don't know if they are achieving that when the market starts to fluctuate. It's in those moments that people begin to wonder if they have the right investments, the right mix of investments, and if it will recover from a downturn. These concerns often drive investors to make decisions based on emotion that may or may not be the right choice in the moment. Having a relationship with a trusted advisor and solid financial plan that accounts for your risk tolerance, goals, and timeline can help keep you on track.
WHAT ARE SOME COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT FINANCIAL PLANNING, AND HOW DO YOU HELP CLIENTS OVERCOME THEM?
One of the most common misconceptions I see is that people often view retirement as the goal line. Retirement is the beginning of a new phase. We spend most of our adult years saving for a distant goal like retirement. What many underestimate is what that next phase will look like and what that means going forward. More importantly many people think of retirement in terms of finances, but the shift to a new phase in life also brings about a change in our purpose, health, and social connections.
WHAT STEPS SHOULD SOMEONE TAKE WHEN STARTING THEIR INVESTMENT JOURNEY?
There are so many options to consider today, and often people do feel overwhelmed. I recommend sitting down with a trusted financial advisor to discuss where you currently are in your journey, what your goals are, and what's important to you. These types of conversations can help you prioritize the best action to take for you and your specific situation.
STACY CHAMBERLAIN
EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR
SECURITY NATIONAL MORTGAGE LOAN OFFICER
KEVIN SLEATER
WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST FACTORS BORROWERS SHOULD CONSIDER WHEN APPLYING FOR A MORTGAGE IN TODAY’S MARKET?
What works for one person may be very different for someone else. Understanding the current housing market and trends can help inform you when it’s a good time to get into the market, or how best to position yourself to take advantage of future opportunities when they arise. In addition, understanding the different variables and factors that go into a loan approval can help you make adjustments where needed to get the best terms.
HOW DO RISING OR FALLING INTEREST RATES IMPACT HOMEBUYERS, AND WHAT STRATEGIES CAN HELP THEM NAVIGATE THESE CHANGES?
Rising and falling interest rates will have an effect on your purchasing power. When the interest rate increases so does the monthly mortgage payment which makes a home less affordable. When the interest rate decreases, so does the monthly payment which makes that same home more affordable. In a low interest rate market there tends to be more buyers who can
afford a particular home which creates competition which in turn drives up house prices. Conversely, in a higher interest rate market there tends to be fewer qualified buyers and therefore somewhat lower competition which can keep house prices in check. A higher rate environment can be the ideal time to buy due to the relatively softer price and buyer demand.
WHAT COMMON MISTAKES DO FIRST-TIME
HOMEBUYERS
MAKE?
One of the biggest mistakes I see first-time home buyers make is skipping the pre-approval process or waiting until the last minute to get pre-approved. When you get pre-approved you know more precisely what your budget is so there are no surprises when you’re out shopping for your new home. It can also eliminate much of the stress that can occur once you are under contract during the home buying process. Pre-Approval can give you a better negotiating position since you can close more quickly. This can help you compete with cash offers. One key advantage to getting pre-approved early is that it identifies areas that could benefit from improvement when needed.

JASON WOODLAND
WOODLAND ADVISORS BUSINESS COACHING
HOW DO YOU ADAPT YOUR COACHING STYLE TO SUIT
DIFFERENT BUSINESSES ACROSS UTAH AND BEYOND?
Every business is unique, so I tailor my approach to fit their specific needs—whether it’s a tech startup in Salt Lake City or a highend seamstress in California. My confidence comes from 30+ years of experience, allowing me to read a room and adapt fast. I'm able to draw knowledge from every encounter I've had, from graffiti artists on the street to eloquent speakers like Tony Robbins, and experiences from skateboarding in my youth to negotiating a 99 year land lease on a historic SLC building. Every experience/encounter is equally valid. It’s about results, and building trust. I’m not here to lecture; I’m a partner who gets their world and drives actionable growth.
WHAT ROLE DOES COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT PLAY IN YOUR SUCCESS AS A BUSINESS COACH?
Being active in Utah’s community isn’t just a hobby—it’s a game-changer for my coaching. I enjoy participating in chamber events, charity drives, networking groups (Rainmakers represent), and anything that allows me to be of service to my community. It’s important to stay plugged into the pulse of local business—what’s thriving, what’s tough. That consistent involvement sharpens my coaching skills and allows me to always pass on the newest and best insights to my clients. In a state like Utah, where relationships matter, my involvement builds credibility. I’m the guy they know, rely on, and call when they’re ready to build.
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU SEE BUSINESSES FACING TODAY, AND HOW DO YOU TACKLE IT?
Right now, businesses are wrestling with uncertainty—talent retention, sales strategy, policy shifts, supply chain hiccups, inflation, you name it. In Utah and nearby states, I see some owners hesitant to take risks. My job? Cut through that fog with confidence and clarity. I push them to focus on what they can control: streamlining operations, doubling down on loyal customers, or pivoting fast. I don’t sugarcoat; I bring hard data and bold moves. My style’s direct: assess, strategize, execute. I love the challenge; it’s why I coach. Helping a business thrive in chaos, that’s the win.
Set your schedule. Make an impact. Build a life you’re proud of.
Behind each of our 200+ City Lifestyle magazines is someone who cares deeply about their community. Someone who connects people, celebrates businesses, and shares the stories that matter most. What if that someone was you?
Or maybe it’s someone you know. If this isn’t the right time for you, but you know someone who could be the perfect fit, we’d love an introduction.
SAGE NELSEN
Sustainable Style with a Purpose
The Sage Nelsen brand believes fashion should not only look good but also feel good — for both the wearer and the planet. As a sustainable fashion brand specializing in upcycled statement clothing, I am redefining the way we think about style and waste. My pieces are designed with purpose and passion, transforming discarded materials into bold, one-of-a-kind garments.
Every item I make tells a story. I source fabrics from discarded clothing, old textiles, and landfill-bound waste. Prioritizing these damaged items that are on their way out, not only reduces our carbon footprint, but also gives each piece a one-of-a-kind edge. Through innovation and craftsmanship, I give new life to what already exists, reducing fashion’s environmental impact while crafting truly unique pieces.
My designs are not just about being eco-friendly; they are also about standing out and making a statement. Each garment is carefully handcrafted to highlight its individuality, embracing imperfections and celebrating the beauty of repurposed materials. From upcycled denim to ironed grocery bags, every piece is a work of art, showcasing the fusion of sustainability and creativity.
As a young person, everyday I feel the impact of the latest trend and need for excess, as well as the dying future of our planet. When I walk through downtown Salt Lake City, the streets tell a story—one marred by
litter and tangled plastic bags, turning sidewalks into a canvas of trash. Each year I notice warmer winters with less rain and snowfall. Every time I go onto social media, I am bombarded with wildfires, the newest fashion trend, floods, the latest product that “will change my life,” rising sea levels, etc. I feel so overwhelmed with this need to consume in order to fit in while also seeing the negative impacts of our excess consumption. These constant overwhelming feelings are exactly what inspires my designs.
I aim to make clothing that is stylish, but will last longer than the ever changing trends. Diverting trash and damaged clothing from the landfill, while also making one of a kind clothing with a statement behind it. Sometimes it can feel like I’m just one person, can I even make an impact? But if each one of us who says that, starts making little changes in our everyday life, we can make a big impact.
Since the earth can’t speak for herself, I want to speak for her. She has always taken good care of us humans, so it’s time we take care of her. My brand, Sage Nelsen, is committed to pushing the boundaries of sustainable fashion, ensuring that my designs not only make a statement in style but also in impact. Join me in making a positive difference — one sustainable garment at a time.

THE POWER OF SELF-CARE
How Woodhouse Spa Elevates Wellness
ARTICLE BY VALERIE BIANCULLI | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF WOODHOUSE SPA
“WE PERFORM BETTER IN WHATEVER WE DO WHEN WE TAKE TIME TO CARE FOR OUR BODIES,” says Patano.
In a society that can sometimes glorify the hustle and productivity lifestyle, investing in wellness can sometimes be seen as an unnecessary luxury. However, prioritizing self-care—whether through skincare, massage therapy, or mindful relaxation—is not just about indulgence; it’s a vital investment in long-term well-being. Investing in wellness has lasting effects that can ripple into every aspect of life. At Woodhouse Spa in Holladay, owner Ryan Patano emphasizes the long-term benefits of self-care, from skincare to massage therapy. Whether it’s unwinding in one of the spa’s quiet rooms, indulging in a hydrafacial, or committing to a
sustainable wellness routine, Woodhouse Spa provides a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation.
Regular massage therapy isn’t just a luxury—it’s an essential part of body maintenance. “We perform better in whatever we do when we take time to care for our bodies,” says Patano. In a state like Utah, where many people lead active, outdoor lifestyles, massage therapy improves flexibility, balance, and overall performance. Likewise, skincare is crucial at high elevations, where the sun and dry air can accelerate skin aging. Taking the time to invest in these treatments not only enhances physical
well-being but also promotes long-term health and vitality.
For those looking for deep skin nourishment, Patano recommends the hydrafacial, a treatment that deeply cleanses pores while infusing the skin with essential nutrients. “This facial includes red light therapy, which promotes collagen production and skin cell regeneration,” he explains. The key to lasting benefits, however, is a strong daily routine. “An aesthetician will have you for one hour a month—what you do with the rest of those hours really matters,” Patano advises.
One common misconception about spa treatments is that they require an extravagant budget. However, Patano and his team focus on education, ensuring clients receive personalized recommendations within their means. “Our aestheticians don’t push products—they provide options and teach clients how to use them effectively,” he notes.
Woodhouse Spa is more than a place for facials and massages. It features three quiet rooms, a steam room, and a beautifully designed nail salon. “Many people hesitate to invest in spa treatments because they don’t know what to expect,” Patano shares. “Try it once. Ask questions. Plan time around your visit and enjoy the experience!”
