Cradled in His arms. I

n my childhood home, the stairs to our second floor featured a landing without a railing (gasp!). My dad would convince me to stand on that landing with my back to him. He'd say, "Now fall back. I'll catch you. Just fall." I remember the first few times: I was scared silly, laughing and trembling, doubting his ability to catch me. I would fall back and within a second I'd find myself cradled in his arms. Soon, I was begging him to let me jump backward into his arms. What is most surprising to me is that I know in my knower that he'd still catch me if we were again on that landing even though I'm no longer a little girl and he's no longer a young man. The shame for me is that this trust in him didn't translate to my living the impossible as possible for so many years in my life. I later learned that the spirit to trust that my dad would catch me as I fell backward could be bigger and greater, and constant. If I put that faith in my Dad in heaven, I could have one backed by the promises guaranteed through the blood of His son, Jesus. Paul of Tarsus writes in 2 Timothy 1:7,

For God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

My spirit was generally and regrettably fearful. I had moments when it wasn't but I usually cowered from chasing my dreams out of fear of too many things I had no control over and would never wield. The day I decided to trust Him was the moment I felt my spirit change from one of fear to one that lives cradled in the arms of the Father, knowing that all is possible—even the seemingly impossible—and that the result isn't as important as knowing that I'm already in His arms, safe and sound. The stories this month are about just that: trust and leaps of faith. Jim Chaffin ("The Sport of Kings") sends his falcons into our skies, never knowing for sure that they'll return. In "Kickstart It," the three entrepreneurs who used a crowdfunding site risked money and reputation (and more) to follow their dreams, and Alyssa and Sarah decided to change their life with a community program that has brought changes they never imagined ("YMCA Workout Buddies").

Missoula Valley Lifestyle | June 2016

In 2015 the median sales price climbed in Missoula going from $225,000 in 2014 to a record high of $238,700. One major cause of this shift has to do with supply. A shortage of homes in the most affordable market range has created a seller's market. This can lead to multiple buyers bidding on a single property and even offers over asking price. Interest rates continue to remain at all time lows which helps justify the higher borrowing power of buyers in the market. In 2015 the highest selling price range was $200,000 to $275,000, accounting for almost half of the homes sold in the Missoula urban area. However, there are more buyers looking in that range than listings available.

8 Important Things to do Before Buying a Home Get ready financially. A good place to start is to outline all of your monthly expenses & income to determine your monthly budget. Your credit score can impact your monthly payment in a big way. It shows how reliable you are in paying off your debts. Most mortgage lenders require 3%-10% of the sales price as down payment for the home, depending on your loan program. If you don't have this lying around it's time to start saving. Consider taking advantage of the many local home buyer classes with Homeword or other institutions. This will help you understand the nuts and bolts of buying a home. Remember, a house is a huge purchase & you want to pick someone you trust, but also someone who can get you a great deal, and is educated on the local market. No two mortgages are the same. Find a lender you trust and are willing to share your financial history with. A good lender will help find what options are available.

Closing costs are not a small chunk of change. They can be anywhere from 1%-4% of the purchase price. Make sure to budget this expense because you will have to bring it with you to closing.

Consider having a will in place or a lifetime policy so there is insurance in place if something tragic happens. You should also have an emergency fund in case you are faced with financial hardship.

A Few Falconry Facts • The falcon has long been a symbol of nobility, wealth, and boldness. • Apprentice falconers in the U.S. usually have two bird options when first starting out: red-tailed hawk or American kestrel. They are intelligent,

capable of catching game, and among the most forgiving when it comes to mistakes. • A falcon's diet in Western Montana consists of quail, pheasant, mice, squirrels, and game meat. • Jim's falcons are always fed on his wrist. It's a constant reminder to the birds they are safe and fed

Jim Chaffin and his team

when they are with him. • Most falconers keep pigeons as a live lure. They can act as an emergency brake when the falcon becomes endangered (by nearby hunters or larger predatory birds). The pigeon will be thrown up into the air to catch the attention of the falcon and signal them to descend immediately for safety. • A hood can be used to keep the bird calm when traveling and to ensure they are alert when the falconer needs it. A falcon's sight is up to 10 times better than a human's, which allows for the possibility of distractions. • Contact Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and request a Falconry Packet if you're interested in entering the world of falconry: FWP.MT.gov. t doesn't take long to realize that Missoula is a unique community. Unique is an overused adjective, to be sure, but there really aren't

any other places that combine Missoula's contrasting attributes: grit and class, high culture and lack of pretension, innovation and tradition. That attitude seeps into every corner of the Garden City, especially in the innovative businesses that call it home. But every successful (and even unsuccessful) business needs start-up funds to get going. And, no big surprise here, some of Missoula's most unique businesses have taken to raising funds through Kickstarter, the crowdfunding network that's helped thousands of businesses and artistic endeavors take root and flourish. Take Paul Wheaton, the "grand duke" of permaculture. Haven't heard of permaculture? Paul's devotees will be happy to educate you. Or you could simply get some of his "Permaculture Playing Cards." Wheaton raised more than $70,000 through Kickstarter to develop and produce his permaculture-themed cards—a standard deck of 52 playing cards emblazoned with permaculture facts and tips. It wasn't his first experience with Kickstarter and he's a fan. "All five of my Kickstarters were funded far beyond what I asked for. I think it's one thing when people tell you that they love what you do, and it's another thing when people put their money where their mouth is," said Paul. "It sure makes you feel warm and fuzzy all over." CONTINUED >

the Ghost, some of it from across the globe. "I was very surprised with the international reach from our Ghost Kickstarter campaign," he said. While $161,000 may seem like a lot, Jesse offered his supporters an actual Ghost in exchange for their support. For a $1,595 "donation," you got a Ghost kit mailed to your house. For $1,995, Jesse would assemble it for you. Granted, both price points represented a savings over the actual retail price, but it wasn't free money by any means.

KICKSTART IT (CON TI N U ED)

Basically, for Paul, Rob and Jesse, the Kickstarter platform acted like an online store offering presales. Each of them took orders for their product via the site, adding a discount or a special incentive to further entice backers. Then they used those funds to make the product and distribute it to the folks who gave them money. Kickstarter provides access to a community of potential supporters, a way to showcase a project online without having to develop a custom website, and a way to accept money without having to develop a full e-commerce site. Of course, Kickstarter doesn't do all of this for free; it captures a 10% fee from all successful projects. If you peruse the current crop of Missoula-based projects, you'll quickly notice that the vast majority are music, film and other artistic endeavors. You can help fund anything from a zombie musical to a documentary film about dogs that ride in motorcycle sidecars. Remarkably, many of these get funded and they each add to Missoula's wonderfully rich cultural offerings. But Paul, Rob and Jesse aren't the only local entrepreneurs using Kickstarter. Two recent additions to the Missoula restaurant scene, the Market on Front and Masala, got some start-up funds through the platform. A local family invented a new board game, Pawn Voyage, and raised $8,500 to turn their prototype into a real game. A local mapping company funded its first map of the Bob Marshall Wilderness through the platform. Without Kickstarter and other crowdfunding companies, it would be much harder for these dreams to turn into realities. Whether they're trying to get support for the next great zombie musical or for a new board game, Jesse has some advice for folks trying Kickstarter for the first time: "Do a lot of research and don't rush into it. Also, don't expect Kickstarter to market for you. Plan a marketing strategy for before, during and after your campaign." But really, he says, just give it a shot. "Don't hesitate to try crowdfunding because there's not much to lose." 26

Workout Buddies

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF A ROUTINE, COMMUNITY PROGRAM, AND FRIENDSHIP

“I can’t imagine my week without you” Sarah told Alyssa with a sweet smile. ARTICLE NICHOLAS LITTMAN PHOTOGRAPHY PAMELA DUNN-PARRISH

A

lyssa Martin and Sarah Nasby have gotten into a groove. For the last year and half, every morning,

Monday through Friday at 9 a.m., they've met for a workout at YMCA Missoula. It doesn't matter if they're tired or grumpy, if it's raining or snowing: at 9 a.m. they hop on spin bikes and start cranking. The spinning wakes them up, gets their blood flowing, but it's only the warm-up. At noon they're back at it with a muscle fusion or barre class for another hour. It's an exhausting schedule to even think about, but for Alyssa and Sarah, their routine has become more than a daily workout schedule—it has become transformative. "It's our hangout," Alyssa told me as I settled in at the Y lobby to talk with them after morning classes. "We motivate each other," Sarah added. "If we're having a bad day, we can spin it out." Alyssa is part of the Y Otters Special Olympics

team. She met Sarah through a mutual friend and began coming to the YMCA with her three years ago. Together, these women have been the flagship model

for the Workout Buddy Program at the YMCA, which allows Y members with disabilities to bring a buddy to the gym to join them at no additional cost. Day in and day out, without fail, they show up for each other, and the commitment has brought amazing results. Between the two of them, with a daily workout routine and a changed diet, they've lost more than 100 pounds.

But beyond the physical transformation, those around them have seen them gain confidence in themselves and forge enduring friendships. "The relationships they've built here have probably changed their lives as much as anything else," their barre Alyssa and Sarah

and muscle fusion instructor Jackie Smith said. "They've

met a lot of other really wonderful women here. It's much more than just a workout." The strongest friendship they've created has been with each other: "I can't imagine my week without you" Sarah told Alyssa with a sweet smile. "Me either," Alyssa beamed. "I can't imagine it without you." The two appear to be inseparable, going on bike rides, out to dinner, to movies and on field trips to Splash Montana or Symes Hot Springs. Their families have become close friends, too. This month, Sarah is taking Alyssa with her to visit her family in Minnesota. With their remarkable consistency, Alyssa and Sarah have become well-known at the Y. "Oh yeah, I'm famous. I'm pretty popular around here," Alyssa told me proudly. Jackie said that everyone in her classes knows Alyssa and Sarah and counts on them being there. Sarah helps to keep Alyssa on task and Alyssa helps to choose the workout jams. Her favorites are Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande. After Special Olympics competitions, Alyssa brings her ribbons and medals to share with the

class. She's become fully integrated into the Y community. Sarah can't discount how much the Y's mission—"Strengthening Community"—has played in their success: "I've been to a lot of other gyms around town but the sense of community, the level of classes, the instructors are all awesome. It's unparalleled."

With the Special Olympics and the Montana Down Syndrome Association both housed at the YMCA, Sarah sees promising opportunities ahead to further integrate those with adaptive needs into the community. She often sees Personal Care Attendants come to the Y to help their buddies with adaptive needs, but they don't often workout with them. By modeling how the workout buddy program can benefit both of them, Sarah's hope is that the program can become more widespread. I wrapped up by asking Alyssa what her goals were for the Special Olympics in May, where she competed in track and field, bowling,

and basketball. "Cheering on my teammates and helping them out," she said without skipping a beat. "And the dinner and dance," she added. It's this selfless attitude, apparent to everyone around them, that has transformed Alyssa's and Sarah's lives and set a shining example for the YMCA community. "I've worked here 28 years," Jackie said. "I've seen a lot of amazing things happen to a lot of amazing people, but this is definitely one of my favorite stories."

Parting Thoughts

Oh, Yes We Can! WORDS JIM COSGROVE

I

f someone tells you that you can't follow your dreams, don't believe them—not even for a second. For much of my adult life, people have told me, "You can't do that!" or "That'll never work." And I'm

not talking about expecting things to always "work out" or "succeed." I'm talking about following our passions, no matter the outcome. Success is never guaranteed. But stagnation is certain if we don't ever take a leap of faith. When my brother Dan and I first went into business together, many raised their eyebrows and shook their heads. One friend said, "Bad idea. My dad and his brothers started a family business, and now they don't speak." Nearly 13 years later, we're still in business—although some months we limp along. Oh, and we still talk. Shortly after we married, my wife Jeni decided to quit her job (with family health benefits) and work with me. People told her, "You can't work with your husband. You'll drive each other crazy, and your marriage won't last." What they didn't count on is that Jeni and I actually enjoy spending time with each other. It's not always a picnic, but it works, and at the end of the day we still (most of the time) like each other. When we found out Jeni was pregnant, our friends and family said, "I guess that puts an end to touring together. You can't travel when the baby comes!" Oh, yeah? Watch us! We traveled with baby Lyda, and she learned how to adapt and ride in a car seat for long distances without a video player. "OK, fine," they said. "You've done it with one, but you'll never manage traveling with two kids." Done it—and we are still doing it. We've logged about 17,000 miles on the road together this year. It's crazy and exhausting sometimes. And, yes, there are tears and tantrums and frazzled nerves, but there is also laughter and joy and new people and new experiences and wonders to behold. The important thing is that we're together. We still run into friends, family, and complete strangers who insist on dispensing advice laced with "can't" and "don't" and "shouldn't." We've learned to smile and nod our heads and plow forward. We know it's just their prejudice and fear talking—fear of the unknown and fear of failure and, even, fear of success. There are some people who can't imagine living the way we do. Fair enough, but I can't imagine living any other way.
