Cheers, to the joy of homemaking. HOME: THE EPICENTER OF THE PERPETUAL TO-DO LIST. I was warned of this list immediately following my enthusiastic calls to family and friends, but with great energy I took the plunge into home-owning and have yet to come up for air. I was in the parking lot of Bed Bath & Beyond when my husband and I got the call from our real estate agent—offer accepted. The weeks that followed were the sweetest of summer days—planning, mapping, budgeting, paint sampling, you name it. We were trying to tread in the pool of homeownership. Today, nearly three years in, I’ve come to love the warm hug of fresh laundry. And these things: clean countertops, a never-empty kitchen sink, perfectly draped plush blankets, the glow of a seasonly scented candle, the delicate swing of curtains like side-swept bangs. Every day I need no reminder that I mustn’t forget to make a life aside from making a living. I pride myself that this is the Montana way—joy in all things, cozied up near the crown of the continent.

“We’re proud of what we’re done and the people who have gotten help from us…. It’s something that started with my grandfather. He was so helpful to people and he’d take the time. FIRE &

WAX THERESA STIRLING CREATES MODERN ART WITH AN ANCIENT TECHNIQUE ARTICLE ALI SOLOMON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THERESA STIRLING

MONTANANS LOVE BEESWAX. We seek it out in our salve products for the endless effects it has on our skin, protecting it against irritants while remaining breathable. It’s antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory, and now, thanks to Washington-based artist, Theresa Stirling, beeswax is the art on our walls. She paints with molten beeswax, the natural wax produced by honey bees. This ancient art form is called encaustic painting and dates back 2,000 years, to the days when Greeks applied coats of hot wax and resin to weatherproof their ships. The medium has come a long way from protecting ship hulls. Today, Theresa’s nature-inspired paintings decorate the walls of homes and businesses all across our great country. We caught up with Theresa days before she was set to travel to Montana to guide the installation of her four-panel 160” x 160” ceiling mural for a Yellowstone Club residence in Big Sky:

It Takes a Village THE INSTALLATION OF THE MURALS AT THE YELLOWSTONE CLUB WAS AN EIGHT-PERSON JOB. There were four mechanical lifts for a total of about 800 pounds of artwork. Theresa stayed on site for four days and worked around the clock to conceal the center T seams of the four panels. Her work covers about 27,000 square inches and is her largest custom commission to date. Contractor and Installers: John Haas and Amy Blevins and crew of Hass Builders in Big Sky // Interiors: Kirkham & Co. in Bozeman To learn more or sign up for her newsletter, visit TheresaStirling.com or visit her on Instagram @theresastirlingartstudios for live painting clips and images.

Encaustic: The Process

I paint with beeswax. I heat it to 180-200 degrees Fahrenheit so it’s molten or melted beeswax, and

then I slowly apply it to board, which is my substrate. The style that I’ve really found my voice in is known as photo encaustic. I typically paint over an image, although that’s not always the case. I have an image glued down on the board and then I apply the hot beeswax over that. I use clear medium, which means there’s a little natural resin or tree sap in there, and I use some that’s pigmented with oil paint or encaustic pigment sticks. I then apply fire to the beeswax once it’s down, working horizontally, taking care to fuse each layer to the one below it for adhesion and structural integrity. Most of my pieces have between 10 and 20 thin layers of beeswax. Wax has the appeal to me, in that you add layers but you also spend some time subtracting layers—excavating, revealing what’s below. Its luminous look is unlike any other medium. CONTINUED >

FIRE & WAX

(CON TI N U ED)

Cold Wax Painting Technique I’ve recently started working with cold wax, and it’s just a little different. It’s got the consistency of a paste. Once the mineral spirits dissipate, it hardens. Typically, you’ll find painters either gravitate to cold wax or hot wax. I’m now combining both, and it gives me greater flexibility and longer workability with some of my colors. It also offers more interesting surface patterns with fire. If I put down cold wax and oil and then pour some hot wax onto that, it sets up this texture on the surface that’s almost like stucco on a wall. It’s completely organic. There is fluidity and texture manipulation that you can get, and surface patterns that crackle. Sometimes I spray shellac to it and get what they call a "shellac burn," which is visually interesting.

Using the Blowtorch When I paint poppy pods or any organic imagery, I paint in the darker tones first, hitting those with my black pigmented wax and then working in those wonderful earth tones—the browns and the mushroom hues. What’s interesting is then you have to hit it with fire, and if you’re not careful, the fire can make everything run. There’s a learned touch to working with a blowtorch and wax. That finesse reveals itself over time.

28

Missoula Valley Lifestyle | March 2018

The Studio The studio is a welcoming place. It’s awash in sunlight with lots of windows. It smells sweet like honey and beeswax. I listen to music most often. Lately, I’ve been listening to Jack Johnson and Chris Isaak. When I’m deep into a project, sometimes I break it up by listening to podcasts. That’s allowed me to lose myself, think about things, as well as focus, which sounds kind of odd but it seems to work. Podcasts have been a great way to round out how I look at the world—listening to other people who have perspectives on creativity or bringing mindfulness forward. The beach and paddle board are right down the studio steps, so there is always an excuse for breaks in nature.

Theresa & Montana I have spent time in Montana fly fishing in the Bitterroot Valley and I have good friends who lived in Missoula, so I enjoyed college football games. The last few years, showing art and doing commission work have led me to Bozeman and Big Sky mostly. I haven’t seen enough but I’ve enjoyed the places I have been and will continue to spend a fair amount of time [in Montana]. I love it here.

FIRE & WAX

(CON TI N U ED)

Commissions I really enjoy the process of collaborating with the collector or designer for the space that the art is going into. For example, if it’s a space that can read well with a moody piece or darker tones, then we can really thread that needle. I’ll often submit a few suggestions or images and then I’ll do a variation of that. In the case of the ceiling mural that I recently did for a family in the Yellowstone Club, they had a vision and a dream and they shared that with me. I collaborated with my designer, and we worked it up graphically and gave them a choice of 10-15 images. Then I painted a version of what they agreed to, knowing that it will always be a painterly version of what we’ve settled on. That’s where I hope my work continues to flow. It’s meaningful, intentional, and deeply important work, with a sense of place or that tells a story.

Giving Back It’s incredibly important to be good stewards, first of our household, then our community, and the wider world. My kids have helped me get back into caring for animals. We currently foster kittens for our local Humane Society. I really appreciate the endless love and support that we can give to the voiceless. Proceeds from art to help animals is a great loop. We have three cats, one dog, two bunnies, and two hens. We are what the Humane Society might call a foster failure family. I also invite teens to visit the studio and freely plunge into a project. It is so lovely to see them focus and unfold. I've also done some community DIY classes, more for bringing people together. My work has also been recently commissioned for a new Liver/Organ Transplant Wing at Swedish Hospital Seattle, to soothe patients and families during a fragile time. I've recently done small, gift pieces for grieving families, using a loved one's ashes in the beeswax art. It's deeply meaningful work, and I absolutely love what I do.

WOVEN + KNOTTED LIVING BOHO-CHIC WITH WOVEN TEXTURES AND MACRAMÉ Decorate your space with handmade textures such as the modern, maker revival of 1970s macramé and year-round tropical feel of wicker. MACRAMÉ Made through knotting instead of weaving, macramé can add a unique touch in many various ways. Houzz contributor Laura Gaskill suggests incorporating it as nursery decor, plant hangers, wall hangings and modern fiber arts. WICKER According to Houzz contributor Yanic Simard, “the best way to really embrace the luxury-cottage appeal of wicker and rattan is to combine different forms of the two in one space ... Look for other unexpected places to add a natural twist to your home with a new material woven into your palette.”

LOCAL’S CHOICE

CHALK PAINT BY ANNIE SLOAN

At Home with Laura Branson

ANTIQUE FURNITURE Decorating my personal space is something I’ve always done. As a kid it was my bedroom, in college my half of my dorm room, and as an adult, my home. I remember finding out I was pregnant with my first child and being so excited to decorate the nursery. I meticulously picked out an antique hutch, dresser, and rocker for her nursery and 26 years later I still have all three of those pieces in my home. Antique furniture always has a story to tell.

This is my all-time favorite paint to refinish and breathe new life into old, tired furniture. No prep, no prime, no sanding required! Just make sure your piece is clean and free of dust and grease. Use on plastic, metal, laminate, you name it. Provence is my favorite color. It is a beautiful shade of aqua that adds a pop of color.

EUROPEAN FARMHOUSE MUST-HAVES FROM THE VINTAGE HOME PHOTOGRAPHY PAMELA DUNN-PARRISH

Laura Branson

BOXWOODS I have been in love with Boxwoods for as long as I can remember. They are classic, traditional, clean, and fresh. They bring something green into any room in my home. I also love them because they aren't seasonal. They are quintessential European farmhouse.

SWEET TEA CANDLE, SOAP & LOTION To be honest, I first ordered the Sweet Tea line because I grew up drinking sweet tea and I was so excited to see an entire line in the scent. I ordered it and lit the candle, and although it smelled nothing like sweet tea, I loved it anyway. It is an amazing scent that fills my store and home, and everyone who walks in the door comments on the scent.

LAURA BRANSON, OWNER OF THE VINTAGE HOME AND CO-CREATOR OF THE PRAIRIE SISTERS VINTAGE MARKET, HAS ALWAYS BEEN ENAMORED BY ALL THINGS VINTAGE. After all, these pieces have stories. Help your home tell a story of its own with Laura's must-have farmhouse treasures. HARDWARE

COTTON Cotton stems, cotton wreaths, cotton swags. It goes with anyone's home and is neutral enough to use year-round. Growing up in Oklahoma, we had cotton fields and I loved seeing them as a kid. Most of my uncles were farmers, and I just love the nostalgia that goes along with that.

I have always had a hard time finding good hardware to replace missing knobs or drawer pulls on old furniture. It’s one of the things I love most about offering an assortment in store. I never have to look too far for the perfect fit, and it's amazing what a little new hardware can do for an old dresser!

THE VINTAGE HOME, EUROPEAN FARMHOUSE WARES 2405 McDonald Ave. Open Wednesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. & Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 406.542.6653 TheVintageHome.com

WRITING ON THE WALL Words are so powerful. I love, love, love to hang signs in my home, especially our signs that are made by local artist, Hazel Designs. I am constantly encouraged by scripture and quotes on my walls at home and in my shop.

TIERED TRAY Seasonal decor is a must, and my tiered tray on my island at home is one of the first places I start. It's fun to add a little bird's nest and eggs in the spring or a few pumpkins in the fall, and when it's not decorated seasonally I can use it in any room in my house. It's great for parties or simply to hold fresh fruit and veggies.
