WHEN HURRICANE HELENE LEFT RESIDENTS POWERLESS, ERIC BRELINSKI HEADED SOUTH

Lighting Up the Darkness

“Seeing the lights come on for those people, after what they’d been through…you can’t top that.”

When Hurricane Helene roared ashore, it didn’t just topple power lines—it upended lives. Streets became canals; homes became splintered memories. Entire neighborhoods were plunged into darkness, leaving residents powerless and struggling to survive.

Enter Eric Brelinski, a lineman from DTE Energy’s Mount Clemens office, who packed his skills and his heart to join the effort to restore power and a sense of normalcy to a battered and shattered community.

Eric and seven teammates—two four-person crews— drove down to Georgia, where the devastation and chaos left in Helene's wake made live wires almost as ubiquitous as worms. “This was the biggest storm I was ever involved with,” Eric declares. I wonder what makes him call it the biggest. “The widespread damage,” Eric responds.

Eric and his teammates were part of “a big convoy down 75" to Augusta. There, Eric describes a vast concrete area “just covered in line trucks—a huge, huge operation. We’d come in from the day’s work, and there were so many trucks they had cops directing traffic.”

Where did they sleep?

“Trailers upon trailers with bunk beds,” Eric answers. “It was a makeshift camp: showers, people doing laundry, a tent to get food in the morning and when you came in at night. And that was it.”

That was Eric’s home for two weeks. What were the conditions like for him?

“It’s not time for us to be comfortable,” Eric replies. “We’re down there to help people get somewhat back to normal."

I ask Eric to describe how not normal the scene he encountered was. Eric recalls the hour-long drive from base camp to job site.

“Destruction everywhere,” he remembers. “Huge, huge trees just uprooted, pushed over on the houses— the entire drive. It was so vast. Imagine driving for an hour and seeing that. It was pretty overwhelming.”

I ask him to compare a major storm here to what he saw in Georgia.

“Here,” Eric says, “we might get some broken poles, some wires down. There, it was poles and poles and poles, just snapped off or pushed right over, all in a row.”

Eric and his team didn’t just work; they talked with the residents.

“We were trying to uplift them. We're all in this together,” Eric recalls. “We would stop everything and say, ‘We’re going to get you guys on today.’ And some of these people…well, they were really, really happy.” One resident told Eric 100-mph winds engulfed her home for six hours.

Eric recalls one area where 15 poles in a row had been snapped off. “Wires, transformers—everything’s on the ground,” Eric describes. The Mount Clemens crews, he reports proudly, restored that entire area in less than two days: "it was a heck of an accomplishment for eight guys.”

Did they celebrate the milestone?

“No, no,” he responds. “We just kept going. Each day was like that. These people were through a lot—we knew they were struggling. So we just stuck together, worked safe and just got as many people on as we could, man.”

The band of brothers did get small chances to bond.

“Picture these trailers ten feet apart,” Eric explains. “There’s an aisleway between the trailers. A bunch of us would sit around and talk about what we saw. Because everybody's going through the same thing. They're seeing the devastation. It was really beneficial for everybody.

“And then driving to the work down there, you really get to know that person. The guy I drove with, I knew who he was, but now I really know him, you know what I mean?”

In restoring the area’s power, Eric was part of a different kind of power: teamwork.

“To the people of Mount Clemens: you can work together to do whatever task needs to be done,” Eric declares. "A bunch of people together can accomplish a lot.”

When he arrived home, Eric was surprised to get a hero’s welcome.

“My three daughters, they drew me this big poster of leads with poles and line trucks and, ‘Thank you, dad, for what you do.’ Just brought me to tears.”

Eric’s back to enjoying The Engine House and Louie’s with his co-workers at lunchtimes. I ask what he took away from the experience.

“I was glad I was there—very glad,” Eric reflects. “Not because of what happened, but because of what I knew what we could accomplish—and we did, all pulling together. That’s the greatest feeling. Seeing the lights come on for those people, after what they had been through, you just…”

Eric trails off, moved. “You can't top that.”

Destruction everywhere—the entire drive. Imagine driving for an hour and seeing that. It was so vast.

Building the Perfect Bouquet

Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in many ways. Some people choose to go out for dinner and a movie, others hire a private chef for a romantic meal at home, some buy chocolates and find a fun activity in town, and some couples go out of town for an exciting getaway! One Valentine’s Day staple is giving a bouquet of flowers to someone special. Flowers are the gift that say I love you and can be given to your spouse, children, and mom. As a child, my father always got me roses on Valentine’s Day until I met my husband and he took over the tradition. A bouquet of flowers can say many things as each flower has a different meaning. If you’re wanting to say something special to the ones you love this Valentine’s Day, take a look at our list of three popular flowers, what they mean, and what flowers to pair them with.

USE THIS GUIDE WHEN ORDERING VALENTINE’S DAY BOUQUETS

Roses

LOVE & ROMANCE

Roses are by far the most popular flower to give on Valentine’s Day. They are beautiful by themselves or you can add Baby’s Breath to enhance the bouquet. These two make a romantic bouquet and are the perfect flowers to give to someone special.

Lilies

PURITY & FERTILITY

Lilies come in a variety of colors and are eye-catching! For a softer looking bouquet, pair your lilies with carnations. These two combined are fun and heartwarming and are a great gift for anyone.

Tulips

PERFECT FOR DEEP LOVE

A bouquet of tulips will brighten any space! Adding some Ranunculus, also known as buttercup, will compliment the tulips wonderfully. These flowers have a refreshing look that will decorate any home beautifully in a crystal vase.

Make

From-Scratch

Pasta

what you need

Yield: 1 pound

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs

what you do

1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight.

2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent.

3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com .

BECAUSE.

CHOCOLATE.

Chocolate Fondue

• 2 cups heavy cream

• 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate (recommended: Lindt or Callebaut)

• 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

• 1 tablespoon brandy

• Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, waffles, marshmallows, Oreos, pound cake, pretzels or any other dipping item of your choice!

Put approximately four inches of water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place a mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream. Let heat. Or, use a double boiler. Meanwhile, break up or chop the chocolate into small pieces. When the cream feels hot to the touch, add chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in vanilla and brandy (optional).  Pour into the fondue pot and light the handy fuel underneath. Keep the flame low as not to burn the fondue. Arrange dippers on a platter and enjoy. For the grown-ups, a spiked chocolate drink from our friend, Martha Stewart.

The Spiked Jones

• 1/2 cup milk

• 1 cup heavy cream

• 1/4 cup whole coffee beans

• 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped

• 2 tablespoons Kahlua

• 1 teaspoon confectioner's sugar

• 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.

When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served "dinner" early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!

CHOCO OLATEC LATECH

HOW TO MAKE

DIY GOLD LEAF JEWELRY DISHES

These cute and colorful dishes work perfectly to organize and display your jewelry, keys, or you name it! And you know what? They’re so easy to make!

supplies you’ll need:

• Wooden bowls, trays, etc.

• Gold leaf (or metallic gold paint)

• Gentle Gold leaf brush

• Mod podge (or gold leaf adhesive)

• Acrylic paint

• Paint brushes

• Painters tape (optional)

steps to do:

• Grab a wooden bowl, some acrylic paint, and a brush.

• Hand paint some paint on one section of the bowl.

• Let the first coat dry and paint another two to three coats of paint until you’re happy with the result.

• Let the paint fully dry.

• I wanted my gold leaf paper to overlap the paint for a layered look, so I took a paint brush and painted some Mod Podge in an overlapping pattern.

• Once the Mod Podge gets tacky, use your hand to apply the gold leaf and accompanying wax sheet.

• Push the gold leaf onto the tacky glue, then remove the top layer of paper.

• Use your fingers to gently push the gold leaf onto the glue a little further.

• Next, use the gold leaf brush to smooth over the whole area and gently wipe away any excess gold leaf. Pay extra attention to the edges.

• Next, smooth the gold leaf section as much as possible, but don’t worry about any imperfections. The organic look of the gold leaf being imperfect gives the piece character.

• Next, work your way to the outer edge.

• Once the gold leaf is perfected, gently brush over the leaf with some Mod Podge to seal it to the bowl.

• Let it completely dry and enjoy!

“They’re a great and affordable gift idea for friends.”
