Live Local

While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community.

To shop and eat local are just a small aspect of truly living local. To help your neighbor in need, visit your local food bank to deliver extra food, donate blankets and meals to the unhoused. Most of all, do it with humbleness. So much goodness happens in our community that you won't find on social media.

Be present in your relationships and the business owners that you patron daily. These are the people who want nothing more than to serve you and their community and your business is invaluable to them and their families. Take a moment to learn more about your favorite restaurant owner, such as Valan who owns Calabria. You will find him there daily getting to know his regular customers. Pay special attention to the cashiers at your favorite grocery store and thank your local police officers for their selfless service to our community. Every life in this community matters.

We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month.

Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like.

Happy February!

REVIVING BUSINESS CONNECTIONS IN WILSON COUNTY

ACCELERATE EXPO

James Danella & Ian Isbell

After years without a major business expo, the Lebanon Wilson County Chamber of Commerce is bringing a fresh and exciting event to the local community: the Accelerate Expo. Spearheaded by James Danella and a dedicated subcommittee of the Chamber’s Economic Development Committee, this initiative aims to unify and empower businesses across Wilson County.

“He’s fully committed to making this event a success and steering the Chamber toward new opportunities.” Isbell’s leadership is expected to bring fresh energy and vision to the Chamber’s initiatives.

Far from being just another business-to-business event, Accelerate Expo promises a professional and engaging experience. One of its standout features is a

“WE’RE ATTEMPTING TO BRING THE BUSINESSES OF WILSON COUNTY TOGETHER TO BETTER COMMUNICATE AND COLLABORATE.”

Danella, chair of the Economic Development Committee, proposed the idea last year, motivated by a desire to break down the silos that often separate businesses. “We’re attempting to bring the businesses of Wilson County together to better communicate and collaborate,” Danella explains. “Our goal is to improve commerce in the county by giving all businesses—not just the usual suspects—the opportunity to be seen and heard.”

The Accelerate Expo is designed to meet a crucial need for the Chamber: creating a profit-generating event that aligns with its mission and supports its members. Danella emphasizes that this project is entirely volunteer-driven. “Our subcommittee’s only vested interest is to support the Chamber and provide value to its members,” he notes.

Ian Isbell, the Chairman of the board, and Melanie Minter, president are equally enthusiastic about the expo. “Ian is a great guy with innovative ideas,” says Danella.

workshop held six weeks prior to the expo, designed to help booth vendors and sponsors maximize their event experience. During the expo itself, attendees can participate in industry-specific breakout sessions led by seasoned professionals offering valuable advice and education for business owners.

The event also includes thoughtful touches like a breakfast for vendors and sponsors to start the day and a cocktail party afterward to foster networking and camaraderie. “It’s all about creating connections and adding value,” Danella says.

The Accelerate Expo marks a significant step forward for the Lebanon Wilson County Chamber of Commerce. It’s not just an event; it’s a movement to strengthen the local business community, build lasting relationships, and drive economic growth. Whether you’re a small business owner or a seasoned entrepreneur, this is an opportunity to be part of something transformative for Wilson County.

Food tastes better when the relationship matters

For food lovers, there’s something magical about a perfectly crafted pizza. It’s more than just a meal—it’s a shared experience. At Calabria, the heart and soul of this experience is Valon Arifi, whose passion for authentic Italian cuisine has made his brick oven pizzas a local sensation. Valon’s journey to culinary mastery began with a simple love for authentic Italian pizza. “It’s not just a meal but an experience that brings people together,” he says. Driven by this philosophy, he devoted countless hours to perfecting his craft. “I spent 10 to 14 hours a day at the

restaurant, experimenting, refining, and learning what truly works and what doesn’t.” For Valon, it’s about more than just technique; it’s about mastering the nuances of each ingredient and harnessing the power of a traditional brick oven to create something exceptional.

At Calabria, quality begins with the ingredients. Valon’s approach combines sourcing fresh, local produce with importing key components from Italy, such as San Marzano tomatoes and specialty flours. “These authentic components are essential for achieving the true taste of Italian pizza,” he explains. Building trust with suppliers is equally important. “We prioritize quality and consistency above all else. This attention to detail ensures that every bite delivers the authentic flavors our guests expect.” Valon’s relationships with local vendors go beyond transactions. He shares an instance when a supplier adjusted an order to maintain Calabria’s quality standards. “Their dedication to delivering

exceptional products helped us maintain our reputation for excellence,” he notes.

To elevate the dining experience, Valon curates a wine and spirits list that complements the menu. His passion for wine has taken him to Napa Valley and beyond, fostering relationships with winemakers and discovering pairings that enhance each dish. “Quality, consistency, and authenticity are my top priorities,” he emphasizes, choosing purveyors whose products align with Calabria’s culinary vision. From bold reds to crisp whites, every bottle on the menu has a story to tell, adding depth to the dining experience.

“WE WANT EVERY GUEST TO FEEL LIKE FAMILY.”

Valon’s dedication to fostering a sense of community shines through in every aspect of Calabria. From the warm, inviting atmosphere to his genuine interactions with customers and suppliers, he’s built a space where everyone feels welcome. “Being genuine and approachable helps create a welcoming environment for our guests,” he says. For Valon, the heart of Calabria lies in creating moments where people come together to share good food and good company. It’s about more than just serving a meal; it’s about cultivating connections that last long after the plates are cleared.

This commitment extends to his team and the restaurant’s broader network. Strong vendor relationships ensure a reliable supply of high-quality ingredients, while open communication keeps standards consistently high. “Vendor relationships are vital for maintaining quality and trust,” Valon affirms. Listening to his customers is another cornerstone of Valon’s approach. “Customer feedback is invaluable,” he says. “It helps us refine our menu and improve the dining experience.” By adapting to his patrons’ tastes, he’s created a menu that not only reflects his passion but also resonates with the community. Each dish is crafted with the intention of honoring both the traditions of Italian cuisine and the preferences of his guests.

Dining at Calabria is more than an opportunity to enjoy expertly crafted pizza; it’s a chance to be part of a story that celebrates tradition, quality, and community. Valon Arifi’s unwavering dedication to excellence ensures that every visit is memorable. Whether savoring a slice of Margherita pizza or sipping on a perfectly paired glass of wine, guests are reminded of the magic that comes from eating local and connecting with the people behind the food. Each dish tells a story of commitment to tradition and an unyielding pursuit of quality, making every meal unforgettable.

As guests sit down at Calabria, the warm and rustic ambiance sets the stage for an extraordinary dining experience. Beyond the food, Valon’s team embodies the values of genuine hospitality. “We want every guest to feel like family,” Valon shares, his pride in his staff evident. It’s this dedication to service and community that transforms Calabria from a mere restaurant into a cornerstone of local life. Every detail, from the music to the plating of each dish, is meticulously crafted to evoke the essence of Italy. In every corner of Calabria, from the dining room to the kitchen, there’s a palpable sense of passion and purpose. So next time you’re looking for a dining experience that nourishes both the body and soul, head to Calabria. You’ll find more than a meal—you’ll find a community united by a shared love of authentic, heartfelt cuisine. Calabria invites you to indulge in the warmth of their food and their story, making every bite an opportunity to connect with a rich culinary heritage.

A historic piece of Nashville’s Landscape: Germantown Inn

Nestled in the heart of Nashville’s historic Germantown neighborhood, Germantown Inn invites you to immerse yourself in a rich tapestry of history and charm. From its roots as the city’s first suburb to its modern-day allure, Germantown holds a special place in Nashville’s story.

Mayter Scott
“From its roots as the city’s first suburb to its modern-day allure, Germantown holds a special place in Nashville’s story.”

Germantown’s story begins in the mid-19th century, when waves of German immigrants arrived, seeking refuge from economic hardship. This influx of industrious newcomers shaped the area into a thriving suburb characterized by distinct Victorian architecture and bustling streets. Fast forward to the 1970s: the neighborhood underwent a major revitalization, culminating in its designation as a Registered Historic District in 1979. Today, Germantown offers an inviting mix of history and modernity, with its charming streets, historic homes, and flourishing local businesses.

But Germantown is more than its architecture and history. It’s also a haven for nature enthusiasts, proudly recognized as a city arboretum by the Nashville Tree Foundation. Over 100 species of native trees thrive in the area, providing a serene, leafy canopy for residents and visitors alike. Strolling through Germantown, you’ll

discover a unique blend of walkability, award-winning restaurants, boutique shops, and cultural attractions such as the Tennessee State Museum, Nashville Farmers’ Market, and First Horizon Park.

At the heart of this storied neighborhood lies Germantown Inn, housed in one of Germantown’s oldest buildings. Built in 1865 by German immigrant H.H. Wallman, the two-story Federal-style home served as both a residence and a testament to Wallman’s craftsmanship. A prominent shoemaker for Nashville’s elite, Wallman’s legacy endures in the historic charm of this beautifully preserved property, fondly known by locals as “The Wallman House.”

The house remained in the Wallman family for generations until the mid-1900s, witnessing Germantown’s evolution over the decades. In 2015, local entrepreneurs Jim Creason and Phil Hyde saw an opportunity to reimagine this historic treasure. According to Creason

Emily Dorio

(managing partner of Germantown Inn and president of Germantown-based Trust Development, LLC), Hyde had the original vision for opening a boutique hotel. He discovered the unique property at 1218 6th Ave North and commissioned an architect to envision its transformation. Hyde brought Creason on board, and after a one-year restoration and addition project, The Germantown Inn opened its doors with much enthusiasm on New Year’s Eve 2016.

“Much of the brick exterior and interior walls were restored along with naming the individual rooms after U.S. Presidents and prominent women from the mid to late 1800s,” Creason explained, emphasizing the historical authenticity woven into the design. Today, Germantown Inn boasts 10 bespoke guestrooms, each uniquely designed to honor the building’s historic character while offering modern comforts. The inn’s amenities include a lush outdoor courtyard, perfect for quiet reflection, and a chic private rooftop terrace, which offers stunning views of downtown Nashville and the surrounding neighborhood.

When asked about his favorite aspect of owning a hotel in Nashville, Creason shared, “More than anything, I enjoy how impressed people are with the quality of our service and the people we have hosting our guests. Our team is really what makes the difference, and having friends or visitors to Nashville experience the décor and quality of stay is very rewarding to both Phil and me.”

Germantown Inn is more than just a boutique hotel—it’s a vibrant venue for creating cherished memories. Creason highlighted the property’s versatility, noting, “It really is a fantastic spot for smaller weddings and corporate events. Our team does a fantastic job working with event planners to transform the property into a fabulous space, incorporating the front courtyard, carriage house patio area, and rooftop into a multi-use experience for events.”

“More than anything, We enjoy how impressed people are with the quality of our service and the people we have hosting our guests.” - Phil Hyde & Jim Creason

The Germantown Inn’s appeal is deeply rooted in its ability to seamlessly blend history with modern hospitality. Each guestroom’s unique design reflects a historical figure or era, connecting visitors with the past while providing contemporary luxury. The surrounding neighborhood, with its eclectic mix of old-world charm and vibrant modern culture, serves as the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable stay. This rich fusion of past and present is why The Germantown Inn continues to attract guests from near and far. Whether you’re seeking a quiet retreat, a lively cultural experience, or the perfect setting for a special event, the inn delivers on all fronts. From the carefully curated

rooms to the welcoming outdoor spaces and unmatched service, every aspect of the inn is designed to create lasting memories.

With its rich history, vibrant community, and luxurious accommodations, The Germantown Inn is more than a place to stay—it’s a gateway to experiencing the best of Germantown and Nashville. Whether you’re savoring the serene courtyard, enjoying the rooftop views, or exploring the neighborhood’s culinary and cultural treasures, you’re sure to leave with memories that will last a lifetime. Come for the history, stay for the hospitality, and discover the enduring charm of The Germantown.

Joe Beretta Foundation; thriving through community involvement

The Joe Beretta Foundation’s journey is a powerful testament to how community support can transform lives.

Founded in honor of Joe Beretta, the organization has become a lifeline for families facing the challenges of advanced heart failure. Thanks to the heartfelt involvement of the Wilson County and Mt. Juliet communities, the foundation continues to grow and fulfill its mission of offering hope and relief to those in need.

Gabby Shepherd, Joe Beretta’s daughter and one of the foundation’s leaders, recalls the inspiration behind its creation. “In 2016, my dad was diagnosed with advanced heart failure, a devastating and incurable disease. While our family in Mt. Juliet was fortunate to have support, we saw many others battling this alone, burdened by overwhelming financial and emotional strain,” she explains. Determined to honor Joe’s legacy and help others, the Beretta family turned their grief into action, creating a foundation dedicated to providing peace, rest, and hope.

Reflecting on her father’s reaction to their work, Shepherd smiles. “He’d be proud but probably annoyed we named it after him,” she remarks. Still, the name serves as a tribute, keeping his generous and compassionate spirit at the heart of their mission.

The support of the Wilson County community has been vital to the foundation’s success. Events like the annual “Dinner in the Vines” highlight this impact. “Last year’s event allowed us to expand our programs to include pediatric heart patients,” Shepherd shares. “Walking alongside those families in their darkest moments is an honor.”

Dinner in the Vines, held in the family’s vineyard, has become a cherished tradition. “It’s like bringing a slice of Italy to Tennessee,” says Shepherd. The evening features live music, auctions, and an Italian feast, all while raising crucial funds for the foundation. Each year, dedicated event chairs have helped double its success, showcasing the collective power of community involvement.

Since its inception, the foundation has served over 1,500 individuals, provided more than 3,000 nights of housing, and facilitated life-saving care for over 225 patients. “The ripple effect of community support is incredible,” Shepherd emphasizes. Looking ahead, she is confident their most impactful work is yet to come.

She encourages readers to join the “25 Club,” a monthly donation program. “Even small contributions can save lives,” Shepherd says. “Together, we’re creating lasting change.”
