Boone Hall
Pumpkin Patch A Lowcountry Fall Family Tradition
W
hat started out as a three acre pumpkin patch almost twenty years ago has now grown into one of the largest fall festivals in the state of South Carolina. The Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch draws visitors of all ages from all over the state with a variety of fall attractions, events, activities, and of course, pumpkin patch fun. But while this event continues to get bigger and bigger each year, this event still maintains the values that were present from the beginning and that’s families being able to enjoy time together having fun on a farm. The event continues to stay true to those roots and that’s why this event is still a Lowcountry fall family tradition for many. DAYS AND HOURS OF OPERATION - ADMISSION The Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch will be open every day October 1-31. Hours of operation will be Monday-Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission to the Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch is $10 each for ages three and up. Children two and under are admitted free with a paid accompanying adult. LOCATION Entrance to the Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch is located 1/2 mile north of Long Point Rd. on Hwy. 17 in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Please do not go to the main gate at Boone Hall Plantation on Long Point Rd. You cannot get into the area where this event is staged from there. For more event details, please visit www.boonehallpumpkinpatch.com.
Lifestyle Letter
Hi! H
ow do you say everything you want to say in one introductory letter? I think the answer is that you don’t. You just tell bits and pieces about yourself until the whole picture begins to emerge. That’s what I hope will happen here, with me and with the Town of Mt. Pleasant. Every month, a new piece or two of the puzzle and every month, hopefully, a new light will be shed. I am a linguist and a writer by trade and at heart. I come to this position as your editor with a background in Spanish interpretation and food blogging. Facilitating understanding and a sense of community through words and food is my passion. There is nothing that I love more than seeing a blossoming friendship form where the lack of a common language or a lovingly prepared meal once prevented it. My professional and personal experiences have shown me the importance of being integrated in your community and with the people around you. It makes us happier, it makes us wiser, and it makes us better world citizens. I bring my enthusiasm for connecting people to their community to Mt. Pleasant Lifestyle, and I hope to curate a view of our Lowcountry community that entices you to get out and be a tourist in your own town. Get to know your neighbors, stop in to check out a locally owned store, have a cocktail and some small plates after work on Shem Creek, head over to the farmer’s market on Coleman, or just make your way to the top of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and take in all Mt. Pleasant, SC has to offer. Scour the pages of Mt. Pleasant Lifestyle magazine and discover something new every month, right next door. This month we are all over town with some fun, local spaces and faces for you to check out. May this be just the beginning of your love affair with Mt. Pleasant, its people, its sights, and its spirit.

Committed To
Community
In A Large Way
M
OUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - Ameris Bank and Boone Hall Plantation both embrace a philosophy that is all about commitment and community service. Now they are joining hands to put that principle on display in a large way...literally. The giant 8-acre corn maze featured each year at the Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch is one of the largest in the Southeastern United States and Ameris Bank is proud to sponsor the 2016 design for this huge Lowcountry fall favorite event. Boone Hall Plantation Owner Willie McRae stated, “We are grateful for partners like Ameris Bank, who help make our special events for the community possible." Ameris Bank Market President Charles Hudgens shared, “Ameris Bank is proud to work with a great, community-driven, organization like Boone Hall.” He continued, “We see ourselves as more than just a business; we’re a community partner. This sponsorship enables us to demonstrate our community values, and we are excited to participate.” This year the layout for the corn maze will be divided into two mazes. There will be a shorter maze designed for families with younger children or people who just want to have a brief corn maze experience that does not require as much walking. The larger maze covers the majority of the corn field and is one of
complicated twists and turns that will present quite a challenge for the more adventurous explorers. The opportunity to experience the corn maze is included with the price of admission to the Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch. See more details at www.boonehallpumpkinpatch.com.

Bill Northrop - Publisher Bill is a Pittsburgh native, where he later raised his own children. He and his wife decided to move to Charleston to launch the magazine, which they have been working on for a year. Bill went to Boston University and then the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and has a background working with various publications. Bill is an avid reader, competes competitively in Masters swimming, enjoys golf and is involved in his church. He also volunteers for various non-profits. His favorite spot in Charleston to take visitors is South of Broad and the Battery due to the impressive architecture.
Lisabeth Northrop - Co-publisher Lisabeth is originally from New Jersey but she spent the past 28 years with her husband (after meeting him at the St. Petersburg Times) and children outside of Pittsburgh. Once their children were grown, they decided to take a leap of faith and move to Charleston to follow their dream of launching the Mount Pleasant Lifestyle magazine. She has two granddaughters, who are her world, and one more on the way. She enjoys going to the beach, reading, and is very involved in her church.
Rachel Castejón - Editor Rachel has always called South Carolina home, but it wasn’t until college that Charleston became her city. What started as a fun hobby of running a food blog with her husband quickly turned into something more as they garnered a following on social media. Thus, a lot of her time is spent cooking, developing recipes, and shooting for the blog when she is not busy with the magazine. Aside from working on the blog and editing the magazine she enjoys going out for drinks or trying new restaurants. Fun fact: She’s also a Spanish interpreter.

Sydney Herwig - Writer Sydney was born and raised in the Atlanta area before moving to Charleston this fall. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a major in Journalism: Magazines and is now a freelance journalist. She's constantly looking for her next DIY project or baking her latest Pinterest find. She plans to eat her way through Charleston one restaurant at a time, go on as many historical house tours as possible, and looks forward to setting down some roots along with her boyfriend, Sam, and cat, Lola.
Kayla Schaughency - Photographer Kayla moved to Charleston less than a year ago post-graduation from Point Park University in Pittsburgh because she longed to try something new while enjoying the perks of the beach life. Most weekends you can catch her on Sullivan's Island, which has so far become one of her favorite spots, or driving around exploring new places to photograph and hang out with friends. Outside of photography she enjoys teaching herself calligraphy and modern lettering. She absolutely cannot live without her camera or avocados.
Debbie Sledziona - Writer Debbie wrote her way through undergraduate at the University of South Carolina where she was an English major, but has since decided to trade in term papers for articles as she comes to the magazine. Debbie loves reading, writing, cooking and walking her dog. Dogs are her world and when she’s not with her own, she works at a vet office as the client service coordinator. She is currently working on her master's degree in Elementary Education. Debbie’s favorite beach is Edisto Island because of the tranquility and seashell selection.

With a fully-equipped kitchen, including a large topof-the-line stainless steel refrigerator, you’ll be throwing dinner parties in no time! Not to mention the large built-in wine rack, just waiting for your collection to fill it. You have the option to eat at the counter, in the eat-in kitchen, or the attached formal dining area. The master on the main floor boasts 12’ ceilings, double walk-in closets and a private sitting room. Walk into the bathroom where you have dual vanities, a whirlpool tub and a large walk-in shower. Also upstairs is a media room, which is great for college football games or when the kids have friends over. We can’t forget the outdoor space. Being just as picturesque as the inside, there is no shortage of access points. Plenty of doors take you to the back yard oasis, where you then have the option of multiple porches—both covered and uncovered. Or you can trek through the courtyard, complete with a fountain, to the green area or the dock. With so many different spaces out here, this backyard is great for both relaxing or entertaining. H
ello from my kitchen! Aside from being your editor here at Mt. Pleasant Lifestyle, I have a not-so-secret passion for cooking and anything foodie related. That means you, every. restaurant. opening. ever. Every month I will take you on a culinary adventure through Mt. Pleasant and surrounding areas, ending with a recipe. I am excited to show you one of my favorite little local corners in the first edition of “Inside the Editor’s Kitchen.” Just outside of Mt. Pleasant, SC, a little to the North, in McClellanville, thrives the loveliest blueberry and honey farm. Run by owners Cheri and Robert using organic farming principles, Blue Pearl Farms is a bee’s oasis. The blueberry flowers sustain the bees, who in turn make heavenly raw honey. They also boast blue crabs in cooler months. While on a tour of the grounds, Robert showed my husband, Alfonso, and me just how to spot the perfect blueberry. Not too big, not too small, just the right shade of blue will do. There was plenty of sampling to go around. Watching him talk about all the different varieties of blueberries and their characteristics as if they were extensions of himself is impressive. Cheri, the expert bee-keeper, passed out one of her bee-keeping suits and we got up close and personal with one of nature’s most important citizens. They are definitely busy bees- did you know it takes 10 drops of blueberry flower nectar to make 1 drop of honey? I learned so many things about bees at Blue Pearl Farms, but the most interesting is that bees are attracted to the Wi-Fi signal in your phone. So, while I was trying to social media the bees, they were giving me the no-so-subtle hint that it was time CONTINUED > to lose the technology and get back to nature.

Before we left, Cheri and Robert loaded us down with blueberries and honey and other Blue Pearl Farms products to try at home. It sure is nice knowing where your ingredients come from and knowing they are from Blue Pearl Farms, right up the road, makes it even better. We loved how transparent they were with their process and products and love that they are so open to teaching those of us who want to learn. If you want to get more information on the blueberries and the bees, make sure to check out BluePearlFarms.com for Cheri’s bee-keeping classes. We just so happened to be headed by the IOP connector on our way home and decided to take our blueberries to the beach. No matter what you end up making with your impossibly fresh, sweet blueberries, nothing is better than enjoying them au natural in the South Carolina sunshine. We had to hold ourselves back from gobbling them all up, as we still needed some for the recipe! When we got home, we went straight to work on a blueberry breakfast cake with smooth and sweet honey butter. See if you can just eat one. They say breakfast, but they mean all day, every day. Don’t forget to head to the Mt. Pleasant Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays from 3:30-7pm and look for Cheri at the Blue Pearl Farms stand- she’ll be the one with all the CONTINUED > gorgeous blueberries and honey!

Blueberry Breakfast Cakes with Honey Butter For the breakfast cakes:
1 1/2 cups unbleached self-rising flour 1/2 cup granulated sugar Very full ½ cup whole milk 1/8 cup vegetable oil 2 medium eggs 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup fresh blueberries, tossed in flour ¾ cup toasted almonds, tossed in flour 1 tablespoon cinnamon-sugar to sprinkle on top Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease 4, 1-cup cake ramekins. Whisk together the flour and sugar. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Add to the dry ingredients, stirring until the flour is moistened; it is ok if there are a few lumps. Quickly and gently stir in the blueberries and walnuts. Divide the batter between the 4 ramekins. Bake for around 25 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. For the honey butter: 1/2 stick softened butter 2 T honey 1/2 t vanilla freshly grated cinnamon (as much as you like) Mix all ingredients together until well blended. Place in a serving container and refrigerate for 10 minutes to slightly harden back up. Serve with the breakfast cakes.

ou count down for the curtains to draw as your heart flutters with anticipation. Your palms sweat as lights peak through the drapes. You take a deep breath and the curtains open to the sight of hundreds of gazing eyes. Heart racing, you take a deep breath. “No big deal," you say. You know you’ve got this, because at that moment, you remember that the stage is your second home. Welcome to a day in the life of local theatre student, Alexis Graham. Alexis, who has been acting since the age of nine, has grown her portfolio to include stage roles in local productions such as Cats, Godspell, and Les Miserables. I met with sixteen year-old Alexis Graham at Midtown Productions where she has pursued her interests in theatre as a student, an apprentice, and sometimes, even a teacher. Midtown Productions has been a cornerstone in the Charleston area theatre scene since 1989. With budget cuts in public-education often threatening arts programs, Midtown recognizes the important role that the arts play in shaping young minds. Through their non-profit scholarship program, Midtown Productions has made art education accessible to children of all ages and backgrounds for over 20 years. CONTINUED >

Alexis and her director, Ryan Ahlert, reflecting on their work under the spotlight
28
Mt. Pleasant Lifestyle | October 2016
With a portfolio to boast at the sweet age of sixteen, who would believe that this shining star was once a bashful girl? Alexis recounted the moment that one teacher changed her life: “I was very, very shy”, Alexis chuckled as her mother nodded in agreement. When one teacher handed Alexis her first script, Alice in Wonderland, the rest, as they say, was history. The seed was planted, and with the encouragement and support from her teacher and mother, Alexis grew into the beautiful, confident, vibrant woman she is today. Alexis explained to me the empowering and therapeutic effects that theatre and the arts possess. From boosting confidence, to helping her “break out of [her] shell,” theatre and the arts have played a huge role in shaping Alexis into the confident actress she is today. While still somewhat timid when it comes to public speaking in the high school classroom, Alexis assured me that it is “a totally different experience being on stage.”
“WHEN YOU’RE ON STAGE, YOU CAN BE WHOEVER YOU WANT TO BE; IT IS ACTUALLY VERY RELAXING.”
Alexis has taken on several roles on the stage and behind the scenes at Midtown Productions. From shadowing directors and stage managers, to directing younger students, to learning light cues and assisting in wardrobe, Alexis has done it all. Although she is the shining star of this story, she confided in me that none of it could have been done alone. “When some people act, they think, ‘it’s just me on the stage, nobody else matters.’ Well, in the theatre, everyone matters because everyone has to work together to make it happen!” The performances and the quality artistic education with which Midtown provides the community are just two examples of the greatness that can be achieved when people come together. When asked about the scholarship program at Midtown Productions, Alexis explained that, “Theatre can be very expensive,” but that CONTINUED >

scholarships allow kids who otherwise couldn’t afford classes to just have fun. Donations from the public are what have allowed Midtown Productions to grant scholarships to children and young adults of the Lowcountry, thereby allowing them to put their mission statement into action: “to entertain, inform, educate, and thereby enrich the cultural life of the greater Charleston area.” When I asked Alexis about what advice she would give to others looking to pursue theatre, Alexis simply stated, “Do it. It is really fun, entertaining, and a great way to relax.” As for her future? With a 4.0 GPA, Alexis has her eyes set on several universities, the Unviersity of South Carolina being among them. Alexis plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in theatre with a minor in forensic science. She also has plans to rewrite and direct one of her favorite plays, Les Miserables, in a very unique way. hat makes something local? Is it perfectly-aged braised meats, butchered and prepared in-house? Is it garden-fresh produce
harvested right from your neighborhood farmer? Or is it never-frozen fish caught straight off Shem Creek? Whatever local means to you, the Granary is sure not to disappoint. Hailing from Charleston, South Carolina, owner and executive chef, Brannon Florie, prides the Granary on locally sourced ingredients and its involvement in sustaining the spirit of Carolina farming. The Granary offers New American fare influenced by Southern cuisine and traditional French cooking techniques. With a menu that centers itself on the abundance of regional resources available year-long, an always-fresh, always-in-season menu is just one feature that distinguishes the Granary among other neighborhood restaurants. “There are very few restaurants other than us in Mount Pleasant that change up the menu more than seasonally,” Florie pointed out, “but we could change the menu up to four times in a month depending on what is fresh or in season.” In addition to an ever-changing menu, the time, care, and effort put into the creation of each meal goes beyond what most others are willing to give. With preparation that can take anywhere from seven months to a year, it is easy to see that each meal in this kitchen is cooked with plenty of love.

In 2010, Florie was fortunate enough to take several classes in New Orleans, where the delicious charcuterie boards of cured meats, jams and pickled vegetables inspired him to delve deeper into the complicated art of charcuterie making. “The Granary was a concept that I wanted to Chef de Cuisine, Chris Wehking (right) with his crew
do for years, and my love for curing meats and pickling vegetables needed to be expanded,” he spoke enthusiastically, “I was determined to do something similar in Charleston.” As for Florie’s personal favorite creation? “There are so many over the years that I love,” Florie confessed. “However, my favorite at the moment is our Floking Artisan Products red jalapeno hot sauce. My chef, Chris Wehking, and I created this salty, vinegary hot sauce that I have to put on everything.” Other proud recipes include kimchi, macaroni and cheese sauce, braised collard greens, smoked pork chops, pulled pork rub, and fried chicken preparation.
Whether you are searching for savory brunch with friends, or a succulent dinner of duck prepared two ways with family, the Granary guarantees to serve Southern hospitality and a dining experience that you and yours won’t soon forget.

Parting Thoughts
Meet
Linda Page DEEP ROOTS GROW UNDER MOUNT PLEASANT'S LONGTIME MAYOR
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY LINDA PAGE
Editor's note: We have a very special guest who will be closing out the magazine each month. Linda Page is the long-time mayor of Mt. Pleasant, SC and she will be coming to us with her words of wisdom and charm in the Parting Thoughts section of Mount Pleasant Lifestyle. I' ll let her introduce herself here.
M
y parents were gypsies who wandered the country in search of opportunity. Luckily for me they were literally stuck in Mount Pleasant because the travel trailer we called home wasn’t able to cross the Grace Memorial Bridge. I was six weeks old at the time. Mom and Dad quickly made friends and settled into the slow pace of the Lowcountry. They opened businesses here and raised my two brothers and me to become ingrained in this promising community. I was a tow headed brat running barefoot up and down Coleman Blvd. for most of my youth. We lived for several years on Sullivan's Island in a converted waste management building, a remnant from the island's days as a military base. Those days in the 1960's are some of my fondest with memories: playing in tidal pools, catching our supper in the surf, and scouring the sand dunes in search of horned toads, blackberries, and sour grass ~ but Mount Pleasant was always home. We moved back to the mainland in 1967, when the population was around 5,500. Our family ran Page’s Thieves Market in several different locations on Coleman Blvd. before settling in to the old Thomas-Simmons Lumber Yard in 1964. Indeed, the Simmons family still owns the property, and my hopes are that we remain here at 1460 Ben Sawyer for at least two more years until the lease ends.

Linda Page, Mayor of the Town of Mount Pleasant
Images of my youth come straight out of the typical great novel about small towns in the South, complete with high school football heroes, colorful characters galore, shrimpers, and even a town drunk (or two). By and large the social fabric of our community was woven with callused hands of hard workers who wished for their children’s lives to be better than their own. As for me, I decided to enter the family business with my brothers. I married and had two children, and have run the Thieves Market since 1981. My brothers also went on to open businesses here. And strange as it seems, I live a few blocks away from where I started out, quite near Mount Pleasant Academy in the Old Village with my daughter, Audrey, and our animal menagerie. Writing this column will give me the opportunity to share some story time with you each month and continue the discussion of what my Mount Pleasant Lifestyle is to you and your family. And please remember ~ don’t just live, create a life.
