Mother’s Day is here. I
t is May and time to honor our mothers. My sweet mother has been gone for 11 years, but I will take the time on Mother’s Day, as I often do, to remember all the wonderful ways she touched my life. This issue features several stories that showcase motherhood. I think you will enjoy Andrea Poe’s “Mother-Daughter Tropical Escape” story about their trip to Jamaica’s Round Hill Hotel and Villas and its simple pleasures. Likewise, our book review of LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER: What She Said Then, What We’re Saying Now, a collection of 56 candid, funny, poignant, unexpected and soul-bearing essays, is inspiring in that it spawned a Listen to Your Mother movement that this month will feature nearly 40 nationwide events. Those of us who remember mom’s delicious cooking (at least my mom’s was), will enjoy Suzette Zara’s suggestion that making her slow-cooked pot roast and garlic mashed potatoes for mother on Mother’s Day is just the ticket. Besides, her recipes of comfort food are the skinny versions. Finally, you must read in Parting Thoughts the stories of two mothers who laud motherhood in spite of daunting personal circumstances. The issue also features two iconic events that offer the community a lot of pleasure. First up is the 21st Annual Balboa Island Artwalk on May 17. For anyone who loves art, live music and the out-of-doors, this event is for you. Then, there is the three-day Newport Beach Wine Festival at the Balboa Bay Resort on May 22–24. The Memorial Day weekend classic fulfills dreams for the avid food and wine (and beer) aficionados in the resort's gorgeous waterfront setting. You will enjoy the fairytale story of how a little puppy bought as a pet turned out to be a grand champion at the Westminster Dog Show in 2013. Laura Garrett, Orange County Business Journal’s vice president/associate publisher, loves her wire-haired dachshund, Greta Garbo (yes, Greta Garbo!), and so do we after hearing how she touches hearts wherever she goes. You will also read about Julie Laughton and her very successful Design Build business. From the little Lemars, Iowa, girl who loved drawing and painting to today's interior designer, Certified Custom Kitchen and Bath Designer, and general contractor, Laughton exudes talent and a propensity for keeping clients, who often become friends. Newport Beach Lifestyle’s Vice President Ana Launes writes about her experience at the newly-opened One Fitness & Therapy in Newport Beach, where she came away pain-free from sciatica pain and with a change in her physical structure, due to exercises for natural posture. Enjoy the Good Times feature, which showcases nonprofits and their supporters in our community, our Around Town department, which focuses on some fun and interesting community happenings, and our Lifestyle Calendar, which will help you set your datebook through May. Again, as I said in my inaugural issue as editor, there is much to remind you in the magazine of what an amazing community we live in, and we look forward to sharing more of those enticing stories in the months ahead. Until next time,

The Road to the Garden A PUPPY BOUGHT AS A PET WINS AT THE FAMED WESTMINSTER DOG SHOW AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
“This is the little dog that could,” Garrett says. “She has something very, very special. She exudes star quality that says to all, ‘Look at me!’ She walks in the ring and commands attention. Her ears go up, her whole body inflates with anticipation, and she is ready to rock ‘n’ roll!” Westminster judge Jamie Hubbard awarding Greta Garbo the winning "Select Bitch" honors with co-owner/breeder/handler Meri Lynn Hurd looking on.

reta Garbo was awarded ‘Select Bitch’-- the top female of her variety--at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 2013. The story of how this two-year-old, wire-haired dachshund won at the top dog show in the land is quite remarkable. The story begins in 2011 when Laguna Niguel resident Laura Garrett lost the last of her two dachshunds, and was feeling the void. “Tucked away in the back of my desk drawer was a card for Palm Springs breeder Meri Lynn Hurd,” Garrett says. “On a whim, I placed a call and learned that she had a litter of three, and there was one left.” There was never a doubt once Garrett saw the little bundle. She was sold as a pet because Hurd thought her wiry coat might be too soft to show her in competition. She had named her “Iona Trailer,” but that name changed the next day. Garrett’s husband Tom noticed that Greta had extraordinarily long eyelashes that

reminded him of Greta Garbo and her name was officially changed to ‘Greta Garbo.’ There was a chance from the very beginning that Greta might prove to be a show dog, but her coat was “iffy,” says Hurd. “I put in the contract that if we could get her coat to come around, I wanted to show her,” Hurd says. “And, fortunately, I was blessed with the most supportive owner anyone could ever ask for.” So, Hurd came out of semi-retirement as Greta’s breeder/handler. Garrett explains that if the breeder feels there is potential with a puppy, they can request a co-ownership arrangement, whereby the original breeder can help show the dog, as well as mentor and coach the new owner. Greta’s training began, and she was registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC), touted as the country’s largest not-for-profit purebred dog registry. She was off to dog shows across the country, picking up ribbons as she strutted ‘round the ring.
After a string of winning placements and a looming entry deadline, Garrett called Hurd and said, ‘Let’s go for the gold and enter her at Westminster!’ Hurd was speechless. “Making a commitment that big takes guts, faith, hope, and a large chunk of your savings account,” Garrett says. “Going to Westminster is like having a horse race in the Kentucky Derby or a car race in the Indianapolis 500,” Hurd says. “It is the biggest of the big shows in the U.S.” The first Westminster show was held in 1877, making it the second-longest continuously held sporting event in the country behind the Kentucky Derby, which was first held in 1875. It was also the first club admitted to the AKC, after its founding in 1884. So, Garrett and “Team Garbo” set out with Greta for the Westminster show in the blizzard of 2013. She had a severed meniscus and was using a wheelchair and cane, but she was determined to get there. “We were taking Greta through snowdrifts to get to the show at Madison Square Garden in New York City,” she recalls. Once there, Garrett found Greta’s fame had followed her, as people were pointing and saying, ‘Oh look, there goes Greta Garbo.’
Greta was shown in the hound class, one of seven pure-bred groups judged at the competition. There are two size categories for dachshunds: miniature and standard. And, there are three varieties–long-haired, smooth and wire-haired. Greta was judged against 20 other champion miniature and standard wire-haired dachshunds, some of whom were very seasoned veterans with high-profile professional handlers. After Greta's win, judge Jamie Hubbard told Garrett and Hurd that he had bred dachshunds during his youth in Australia and thought Greta Garbo was one of the nicest he had seen in a very long time. Following Westminster and a few more winning dog shows, Garrett bred Greta to another champion dog in Virginia named “Owen.” “She had four puppies, which I named Humphrey Bogart, Katherine Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Clark Gable. I kept ‘Kate,’ who is identical to her mom. She hit the show ring in the fall of 2014.” Garrett muses about her special dachshund, saying, “Greta is what we call a ‘heart dog.’ She is the one who sleeps with you, who travels with you–the one dog who would lay down her life for you. I get teary as I say this. There will never, ever be another dog like this one in my life. She’s just that special.”

Art and Culture
on the Bay Now in its 21st year, the beautiful outdoor Balboa Island Artwalk continues to delight.

s far as artwalks in Orange County go, the Balboa Island Artwalk has one thing over all others. "We are on beautiful Balboa Island, and the backdrop for the artwork is beautiful Newport Harbor Bay," says Co-founder and Director Debra Huse, "The event has really grown since its infancy more than 20 years ago." “We started very small,” Huse says. “Our first show wasn’t even outdoors. We started with about 10 local artists, only artists that lived on Balboa Island. What we had in mind was just to let people know that there are a lot of talented local artists.” They eventually started to branch out, and a small show on Bay Front was met with overwhelming success. “We have been adding music and artists ever since, and it just keeps growing,” she says. 16
Newport Beach Lifestyle | May 2015
The Balboa Island Artwalk, which takes place May 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., has grown to include around 90 artists, and draws a crowd of more than 3,000 people each year. “It’s kind of the kick-off for our summer, and everybody comes out to visit with each other and enjoy the art and music together,” she says. “It’s quite a happening. A lot of people come with their families, their dogs and their rollerblades, and it’s a lot of fun.” No longer limited to artist residents of the island, artists and craftsman from San Diego, Los Angeles, the desert, and the greater Orange County area gather to showcase jewelry, photography, pottery, paintings, blown glass and sculpture. And, since so many of the artists are local, the coastal landscape provides a majority of the inspiration for the artwork.
BALBOA ISLAND ARTWALK
South Bay Front, Balboa Island Sunday, May 17, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. 949.675.3612 BalboaIslandArtwalk.info
“A lot of it is very nautical and oceanthemed,” says Huse, “But everything included is more along the lines of fine art, like something you would find in a gallery." Each year the walk also includes a few unknown artists. “We always have a few artists that maybe have never shown before, and we give them an opportunity to showcase their work and for people to get to know who they are.” Even kids get involved in the art showing. “There are always some kids’ art projects along the way, too,” Huse says. “And, little kids get to watch the artists do demonstrations, which is really educational and community-oriented.” Set up along the South Bay Front walkway, each three-block stretch is broken up with live music, with four stages in total.
“It’s kind of neat because you stroll along and on one side are the artists, the bay and the beautiful scenery, and three blocks later, on the other side, is the live music.” This year’s musical lineup includes The Retros, Rick Sherman & Alan Remington, Jim Roberts, Don Ross and Rose, and the surf keyboard stylings of Grant Peacock. “Some of the musicians have been playing the artwalk for almost the entire 20 years,” Huse says. “Because they had so much fun the first year, they can’t wait to come back. It’s the same with the people who come to the art walk; they know where to find their favorite band because they have been coming for so many years.” Each year the Balboa Island Artwalk also releases a collectable t-shirt and a poster featuring original artwork. “They are different every year, and people love to collect them,” Huse says. To make the most of the event, Huse recommends spending the entire day. “Plan to come for breakfast on the island, lunch and/or dinner and spend the whole day starting down one end and then walking to the bay front.” She also says parking can be tricky. “There is not a lot of parking in the area, so it is best to come by bicycle.” If you aren’t close enough to ride your bike, The OC Cruiser provides free shuttle service to the event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from the parking lot at Bayside Drive and Pacific Coast Highway. “There is also parking on the peninsula, and you can take the ferry across,” says Huse. “That, in itself, is fun because across the ferry is the Fun Zone, and there is a lot to offer in the area.” There is also a small market set-up at the ferry landing for the day. “We’ll have Girl Scouts selling water and cookies along the way,” Huse says. “And, don’t forget to bring a bag for all the goodies you’ll buy!” Because the event is outdoors, sunscreen, a hat and comfortable shoes are also a good idea. Admission is free. It’s a perfectly artistic way to start your summer.
“Really, you have never seen so many smiling faces,” Huse says. “On that day, there are so many people happy to be on the island and happy to be outdoors with the art and culture. It is fun for the entire family.”

$10 OFF a 12 Month RX Supply Reminder from Otis: and $5 OFF a 6 Month RX supply of Heartworm/Flea & Tick It’s a new month!
Flea and tick prevention keeps your pet healthy. Your pet won’t pick up tapeworms or have flea bites that cause itching misery and flea allergy dermatitis. In addition, you can help prevent diseases that fleas and ticks carry such as Lyme Disease, ehrlichia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tick paralysis. Don’t let your pet get bitten by fleas when modern medicine has provided wonderfully effective and safe flea products.
Give your pet flea and heartworm medication every 30 days.
$10 OFF Rattlesnake Vaccines
A bite from a rattlesnake is more common an occurrence than rabies and more likely to be fatal to your dog, so vaccinating him could make all the difference between life and death. Rattlesnake bites are twenty-five times more dangerous to dogs than to humans, and even if your dog survives a bite, he risks a high chance of life-time damage. The rattlesnake vaccination works by prompting your dog’s immune system to create more antibodies to help fight the venom found in the bite. Vaccines are different then an anti-venom, which is administered after a dog has been bitten. While vaccines are a preventative measure that encourages a dog’s body to create his own antibodies, anti-venom is the injection of another animal’s antibodies into your dog to help fend off the poison. *It is important to remember that rattlesnake bites are still a very serious incident, with or without the vaccination. Even if you have your dog vaccinated, it is crucial to take your dog to the veterinarian if he has been bitten by a rattlesnake

Living the
Good Life Newport Beach Wine Festival returns better than ever. ARTICLE DONNA BUNCE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED rea residents always eagerly anticipate the Annual Newport Beach Wine Festival, hosted by the Balboa Bay Resort, and this year is no exception. In the 12th year of the event, the resort has retained the festival’s tried and true events, and stepped it up in other areas. “Along with the recent renovations to our beautiful resort, we are very excited to introduce some modern twists and fun experiences during this year’s annual weekend of exceptional wine and food,” says Balboa Bay Resort’s General Manager Sam El-Rabaa. Indeed, the resort has recently undergone a multi-million dollar renovation to offer an overhaul of its restaurants with brand new menus and a sparkling new lobby. Bringing Executive Chef Vincent Lesage on board with his extensive culinary background was the perfect touch.
A
The three-day food and wine festival, always held on Memorial Day weekend, is set for Friday, May 22, through Sunday, May 24. It begins with a “Meet the Maker” reception followed by a winemaker dinner on Friday, this year featuring only one winery, Jordan Vineyard & Winery. In the past, the opening night reception and dinner featured a multitude of wines, many French. “We wanted to feature a wine that was iconic and local, not wines with limited accessibility, as in the past,” says BBR’s Marketing Manager Kevin Gasparro. Maggie Kruse, Jordan’s assistant winemaker, will be featured in the “Meet the Maker” reception held on the Commodore Patio, while the Jordan Reserve Winemaker Reception and Dinner will follow with a five-course dinner and wine pairings from the highly rated Alexander Valley/ Sonoma County winery. This year’s gourmet extravaganza will be held in BBR’s newly-renovated Waterline restaurant. Saturday, May 23, is packed with three events, beginning with a “Cooking with Wine” Trinitas Cellars Cooking Class and Wine Pairing in the Bay View Room. According to Gasparro, last year’s class was such a success, it is being repeated. Next up is the “Mastering the Art of Blending Experience” class in the Commodore Room and Patio. Festival coordinator, J.C. Converse, who is Waterline’s General Manager and BBR’s Beverage Manager, fills us in. “This is a first-time event for the festival,” Converse says. “We’re limiting it to 38 people, who will be led by a winemaker, with guests actually making their own blends.” Attendees will be blending from a range of base wines and will learn the characteristics attributed to each varietal. Converse predicts it will be the festival’s signature event and will sell out the fastest. The day ends with the festival’s well-established Grand Tasting in the Grand Ballroom, with more than 200 wines from 90+ wineries from around the world providing sips for guests. Chef Lesage and his team will orchestrate culinary creations to delight the senses, including live action stations, and live music is always part of the mix.
The festival introduced a “Beer for Breakfast” Sunday morning last year and is repeating it this year in the resort’s newly-renovated A&O Kitchen+Bar. “We are taking it to a whole new level,” Gasparro says. Converse, who has a degree from UC Davis in Brewing and has been brewing for 15 years, says, “Chef Vincent comes up with a hearty, gastropub-inspired breakfast menu, and I pair the beers to it. We’ll discuss the beers flavor profiles with guests and how they interact with the foods, much like you’d do with wines.” Converse says a number of local breweries will be included, as well as international beers and offerings from San Diego, a particular hot spot for good brews. “We now have a tap system that can pour local and popular craft beers,” Gasparro adds. The festival concludes with its ever-popular seafood festival, this year dubbed the “Waterline and Wine Seafood Festival.” Always held outdoors in the past, this year the scrumptious seafood, wines from 30 different wineries, and an assortment of craft beers, accompanied by live musical entertainment, will be showcased in Waterline and its large bayfront patio and will carry over onto the Commodore, Boardroom and Library terraces, with views of gorgeous Newport Bay. “We wanted to showcase the seafood, and we couldn’t do it outdoors,” Gasparro says. Converse sums up the entire effort. “The festival will be everything we’ve done in the past, and more,” he says. How could it not be? Where else can you sip fantastic wines and partake of sumptuous gourmet fare in such an exquisite waterside setting? Here! Here!

TROPICAL ESCAPE Jamaica's Round Hill Hotel & Villas offers luxuriously simple pleasures.
ARTICLE ANDREA POE

ou know something very good is happening to your soul when you awake with a single worry: Will the woodpecker linger at the palm tree outside your window long enough for your eight-year-old daughter to catch a glimpse of him? This is one of the many simple pleasures at Round Hill Hotel & Villas, which is tucked into a cove in Montego Bay, Jamaica. My daughter Maxine and I have come to this lush island to spend time together. This becomes infinitely easier without the distractions of television, computers, smartphones and iPods. (Although there are no TVs in the rooms at Round Hill, there is superb Wi-Fi connection, but we banned it from use in our room.) It turns out plenty of mother-daughter duos seek refuge here. During our short stay, we met a white-haired mother and her nearly retired daughter, along with a 40-something mom traveling with her daughter, a newly minted college grad. With 36 rooms and 27 villas that clamber up green hills, this is an iconic property, one that’s hosted legions of bold names, such as Noel Coward and Oscar Hammerstein, both of whom owned villas here, and John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy, who honeymooned in a villa. ( JFK was so inspired by Round Hill that he later returned to write his inaugural address here.) The resort remains simple, understated and calm. It is the perfect antidote to the mega resort. Our room was a whitewashed cocoon with a palm-fringed view of the Caribbean. Its low-key 24

interior was designed by Ralph Lauren, who happens to own two villas and a partnership in the property. Hotel rooms are clustered in a sun-bleached building known as The Pineapple House, which was built in the 1950s. Up in the hills above the beach, villas have multiple bedrooms, soaring ceilings, vertiginous views, private pools, and a morning staff to cook breakfast. But for us, our snug room was perfectly located in puttering distance of the beach and the pool. We fell into some sweet routines, including twice daily pilgrimages to one of Maxine’s favorite hangouts at Round Hill, a rocky beach where the ocean tosses glittering sea glass in dozens of hues of green and where tiny crabs scurry about the sand. Nearby sits my favorite perch, a duo of four-poster beds planted amid 10 acres of impossibly green lawn that jet out towards the sea. Look out: undulating ocean. Look up: f luffy white clouds casting theater into the sky. Round Hill offers all kinds of water sports, from paddle boarding to sea kayaking, SCUBA diving to snorkeling. There’s even a daily glass-bottom boat that sets out in search of vibrant schools of butterfly fish, darting stingrays and pink-tinted conch. I wiled away an afternoon at the breezy spa, housed in an 18th century plantation house. The treatment menu features local ingredients like crushed pineapple, coconut milk and lime-ginger, so fresh they could be featured at a smoothie bar.
Meanwhile, Maxine escaped to the kids’ club. There, she worked with a Jamaican artist named Errol Allen on a plein air painting of a tropical flower. She also created a pair of glass bead earrings so sophisticated that for the rest of the trip I got questions about where I bought them. Round Hill can help arrange excursions off property to visit dolphin parks and hummingbird farms, historic homes and shopping complexes. Perhaps, if we had stayed a week, we’d have ventured out, but for our three-day mother-daughter trip, swimming in the warm sea, playing mermaids in the pool and chatting about everything from Harry Potter to reggae over long al fresco dinners kept us occupied. Cast aside any notions of hotel food. Round Hill does things differently. At night, the sound of surf below and lights in the trees above transform the Seaside Terrace into a fairyland. It’s a perfect backdrop for Chef Martin Maginley’s culinary prowess, which showcases the best of the island, including organic (property-raised) produce, along with Caribbean grouper, snapper and mahi-mahi cooked simply on a pimento wood fired grill. Every Monday a beach barbecue–complete with tiki torches, table cloths, a bonfire, and feet plunged into the powder soft sand–delivers traditional Jamaican cooking, such as grilled spiny lobster and guava-glazed pork. More adventurous palates will lean toward more unusual local offerings. One evening we started with yam balls stuffed with marlin, which lured us from our comfort zone. Ditto with breakfast, which, for me, was the ackee (a custard-like fruit that resembles scrambled eggs once cooked) and salt fish paired with callaloo, shredded greens enlivened with scotch bonnet peppers, onions and garlic. Back home, I asked Maxine what she missed most about the resort. It was the rustic swing that hangs from a gnarled almond tree, where she’d pump her legs with abandon, soaring high enough for a view of the Caribbean Sea. And, thinking back, it may well be what I miss most, too. For her, it was fun. For me, it’s a symbol of Round Hill’s simple pleasures. May 2015 | Newport Beach Lifestyle

A New Health/Fitness/Therapy Business Opens in Newport Beach

A LOCAL VISITS ONE FITNESS & THERAPY TO FIND HELP WITH RECURRING PAIN ARTICLE ANA LAUNES
I
have suffered from intermittent sciatica pain for many years. To combat the uncomfortable feeling, I have tried different conventional and unconventional approaches that have yielded somewhat successful results. When One Fitness & Therapy owner Chris Swartz invited me to come and work out at his center in Newport Beach, I felt curious and intrigued to try this new method. The center in Newport Beach did not look like any other gym I had seen before. There was a very large grouping of logs directly in front of me when I first walked in. My first thought was, ‘What have I gotten myself into?’ There was no way that they could expect me to do anything related to those logs–especially with my sciatica flaring up again! I was greeted by a young lady named Danny, who, full of both energy and smiles, directed me through all the requisite paperwork and a health questionnaire. After this, she began asking me what specific health problems I had and where I had pain. She was very thorough when asking about my pain levels and how long I had been experiencing the pain in each part of my body. Next, she started evaluating how my hip, knee and foot were aligning, and carefully gauged and measured the rotation of my hips and my posture. She provided a very individually-focused and detailed explanation of what was causing my pain and why my body was reacting the way it was. She told me that long hours sitting in front of the computer, sitting in meetings and behind the wheel of a car were probably the main cause of a shift in my natural posture and were the origin of all my pain and discomfort. Danny explained that the objective was to get my body back into its natural blueprint. At this point, I knew that One Fitness & Therapy was not like any other gym I had ever visited.

The next 30 minutes were a series of stretching exercises designed to gain back my strength and natural posture. These series of exercises constitute “The Routine” that must be performed on a daily basis for 10 to 14 days, in order for muscles to gain their natural strength to hold the body in its natural position and posture. The correct posture would then result in my hips not being rotated out of position, as well as my knees and feet being aligned. Once the routine is created, it’s up to the individual to perform it alone at home or set up a weekly schedule two to three times a week with one of their trainers. Seven days into it, I can say that my sciatica is not hurting, but I also feel that some sort of change in my physical structure has taken place. I feel better. One Therapy & Fitness specializes in complete pain elimination through therapy focused on stretching and strengthening the key muscle groups, tendons and ligaments to hold the bones in their natural pain-free state. Their natural fitness program then helps to maintain the pain-free state, so you can enjoy an active lifestyle. Their program can be tailored specifically to your personal habits and discipline level, and seems to have been extremely successful for golfers, ex-athletes and people with very active lifestyles.

ho would know that this statuesque Midwest gal in her pointed orange ostrich cowboy boots would be navigating construction job sites, managing men, and delivering client's new home or remodeling dreams with extraordinary creativity and drive. You have a concept? Julie Laughton will deliver. Where did Julie get all this drive, talent and love of her work? We need to go back to a very small town in Iowa—Lemars, Iowa, to be exact, coined the “Ice Cream Capital” of the world. There, little Julie, as early as seven years old, began drawing and painting. She studied piano and played the drums as well, but it was her interest and talent in art that drove her. “I get the artistic talent from my Dad and the adventurous spirit and business acumen from my Mom, who was in finance and was a pilot," Laughton says. “Thinking back, I even drafted my high school facade, each brick to scale.” Laughton’s grandparents recognized her talents, and financed her years at Iowa State. The summer before she graduated, she was offered an internship in New York City. She loved the work, and the firm loved her, so when she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in interior design, including architecture and mechanical drawing, she returned to New York at the firm's invitation. It was a great time to be in New York. In the late 1980s, the city was experiencing a rebirth in design and architecture. Everywhere there was construction, renovation, remodeling. Corporations were excited about the new Midtown Manhattan. Even the old Friars Club, founded in 1904, experienced a major renovation. And, that's where Laughton stepped in. Whether it was the remodel of the Friar's Club or working with the Zeckendorf developers on Park Avenue and other firms, Julie was making her mark in New York and loving it.

“The best part of my business is the connection I make with clients,” Laughton says. Julie Laughton at work
But, in the early 1990s, business slowed, and Laughton was invited by an old Iowa State friend to visit San Diego. Well, the rest is history. Those of us who have visited California know how that first exposure to Southern California feels and the pull it has on us. Julie was no different, and she hasn't looked back. California was where she wanted to expand her business. At that time, design became more formal and defined, so Laughton added “Certified Custom Kitchen and Bath Designer” to her interior design license and topped it off with a general contractor license. Of course, many of the early California homes appealed to her, be they Spanish and Mediterranean styles, Craftsman, or the Bungalows. One of the projects she is most proud of is an original Wallace Neff home in Pasadena, where she designed the kitchen 26 years ago and is designing the owner’s wine room today. “The best part of my business is the connection I make with clients,” Laughton says. “There is a trust, which often develops into friendship, and after 26 years, I'm still friends with the folks in Pasadena.” The house was featured in the 2005 movie, Monster-inLaw, starring Jane Fonda. Today, Laughton’s business, Design Build, takes her all over Orange County. The fun thing about her is that she is always one step ahead. To keep herself grounded, Laughton does yoga and counters with a little kick boxing. When asked what the future holds, she says, “In between my design build projects, I've been inspired to write a book to help clients understand the importance of starting with a good, solid plan.” It All Starts with a Plan, by Julie Laughton, will be published next year. So keep your eyes out for that pair of dark orange ostrich boots in your neighborhood. They are one of a kind, and so is Julie Laughton.

LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER WHAT SHE SAID THEN, WHAT WE'RE SAYING NOW EDITED BY ANN IMIG
I
n 2010, Ann Imig organized a live-staged reading event in Madison, Wisconsin, to bring together her community—mothers and non-mothers alike—and provide a forum for a diversity of voices to share their personal stories. These readers spoke honestly and openly about motherhood, family, childhood and parenting. And so, the Listen to Your Mother movement was born. This one event quickly grew into an annual national performance sensation, with nearly 40 nationwide events scheduled for May 2015. Now, in LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER: What She Said Then, What We’re Saying Now, Imig brings to the page what she helped bring to the stage five years ago with this collection of 56 candid, funny, poignant, unexpected and soul-bearing essays. The contributors to this powerful anthology bravely share their stories, ranging from hilarious to heartbreaking, showcasing the experiences of ordinary people from a broad spectrum of racial, gender and age backgrounds. With a roster of writers that includes first-time essayists and New York Times-bestselling authors, LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER reflects our diverse contemporary lifestyles and rapidly changing definitions of motherhood. While some are paeans to the mother we might not have appreciated as children, unaware then of how hard a task motherhood can be, others fully embrace the power of their family matriarchs. A woman faces the painful truth that there is nothing she can do to save her mentally ill, homeless mother from the streets. A military mom raises her baby alone when her husband is deployed to the Middle East. A mom tries to hold it together while battling cancer. One mother recounts the elation and ultimate heartbreak of an unplanned pregnancy in middle age, while another shares the years of sadness that accompanied her decision to give her baby up for adoption. LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER delivers the collective voice of mothers among us and celebrates less conventional arrangements. Mothers write of their personal struggles in the day-to-day job of mothering, of trying to raise a child who is not spoiled, of navigating single motherhood after divorce or death, and of dreading the body image issues that will one day inevitably undermine a young daughter’s confidence. “Listen to Your Mother. It’s a cliché, it’s the sixth commandment, and it’s an imperative for curbing children young and old from poor life choices, like jaywalking and sixty-four ounce sodas,” Imig writes. G.P. Parting Thoughts
Motherhood is not for the fainthearted WORDS AND PICTURES REBECCA BERRA
DOREEN
As an ambitious young woman in love with a high-spirited New Yorker, Doreen Sternkopf pictured the happy life ahead: marriage, children, a home full of laughter and music. But the realities of motherhood rarely meet the expectations of the uninitiated. “Living so far away from family is hard,” explains Doreen. With her extended family in Zambia and her in-laws in New York, she dedicates her life to caring for her two young children in Parker, Colorado. Ivwa, the eldest, is a gifted student. She excels at ballet, sings in the Young Voices of Colorado, plays chess, writes poetry, and has a great many friends. Yande, the youngest, is a quiet soul. As a baby, he suffered frequent, debilitating seizures. After years of tests, treatments, surgeries and agonizing research, the seizures are under control, but Yande’s condition has never been identified. He cannot run, play or talk, and has limited control over his body. He has a feeding tube, that attaches directly to his stomach, and a wheelchair. Yande smiles when listening to music and laughs at his sister talking in funny voices, revealing a sweet and happy personality. It is these small things that fill Doreen’s heart with joy. “The stress piles up, but I don’t worry,” she says softly. “At the end of each day, I submit to the Lord. Also, it helps to have an understanding husband.” Doreen turns as Ivwa clatters into the house, grabs her cycle helmet and darts out again. Yande relaxes peacefully on the couch. “I love motherhood! I wouldn’t want to do anything else.” SHEYNA
On a sunny Memorial Day nine years ago, Sheyna and James Marshall, and their three small children, were waiting at a red light in their Oldsmobile. Little Makenna was two years old, Justin was five and big brother Christian was almost seven. Suddenly, a teenaged driver, racing his friend, lost control and violently smashed into the Oldsmobile, flipping both cars. As the Marshall family helplessly spun upside down in the road, another street-racing youth plowed into them. 34
Newport Beach Lifestyle | May 2015
Makenna suffered broken legs, and Justin was critically injured, with gasoline burns, a broken leg and a crushed skull, requiring numerous surgeries. He was in a coma for months. Sheyna's “beautiful boy,” Christian, was killed instantly. Sheyna helped Justin slowly learn to function with brain damage, a paralyzed left arm and an impaired leg. She nursed her daughter back to health and was blessed with another baby girl, Brooklyn. The military family was transferred from Washington, D.C. to San Antonio and on to Colorado Springs, where Sheyna continued to raise her three happy, resilient kids. In 2010, Sheyna put her immense courage, strength and fiercely protective instincts to good use, serving her community as a police officer in Fountain, Colorado. She also volunteers with Drive Smart Colorado, educating high school students about the devastating consequences of speeding and distracted driving. She introduces Christian through videos and stories, so he can inspire the teens to drive responsibly. Two years ago, the American Mothers organization named Sheyna the Colorado Young Mother of the Year, in recognition of her dedication to saving lives. Her advice to new moms: “There will be some very good times and some very low times, but ultimately it’s a beautiful ride.”
