Which witch is which?
I
love Halloween. The romanticism of fall, with its crunchy leaves and crisp air, gets my blood pumping like an old hunting dog that feels the season changing and knows good times are coming her way. My love of the holiday goes deeper than my romance with candy. And it’s not just a flimsy excuse for me to relive the past with elaborate costumes. I love Halloween for this simple fact: It’s one of the few holidays that celebrates not only family, but community. Think about it. Most big holidays focus only on family. These kinds of holidays usually involve gathering around a table and eating until everyone is in a food-induced coma. Halloween causes — even forces — us to connect with those with whom we don’t normally engage. When celebrated at its best, Halloween is an outdoor promenade as families stroll down the street, wave, stop to chat and knock on each other’s doors. I’ve gotten to know neighbors on Halloween more than during any other holiday. As they dutifully drop a Milky Way into my kids’ pillowcases, our conversation is richer than the thousand “drive-by waves” we give each other during the rest of the year. In fact, when my boys were younger, I’d probably only hit half a dozen houses if not for the constant chorus of “come on mom” by my two sons, who had visions of toting home a Wonka-size arsenal of candy, and did. I’ll admit it. I get a bit annoyed when I hear about “safe alternatives” to trick-ortreating. What could be safer than wandering around your own neighborhood with your family and closest friends? There are some out there who see Halloween as a nuisance — a holiday when teeth rot and kids go through sugar mania, or, more tenuously, a holiday that encourages panhandling and is a gateway spiral into the dark world of the occult. Oh please! I see it as a celebration of the great people that make up our neighborhoods. If it were socially acceptable to knock on a stranger’s door and chat while exchanging Kit Kats, maybe I wouldn’t get as excited about Halloween. Until that day happens (and what an epic day that would be), you’ll see me as excited as my kids, watching the sun set in the sky so I can hit the neighborhood on the evening of October 31.

Life with Food Allergies Rekindling Your Love Affair with Food Article Terri L. Wallace
W
ith a diagnosis of food allergies or sensitivities, it feels as if danger lurks at every meal. Before you take a bite, suddenly you must have a discussion: What ingredients does it contain? Was the facility where it was prepared a dedicated facility? Meals can lose their pleasure while you learn to navigate around food restrictions; your food-life loses its spontaneity. Fortunately, as you gather information and learn ways to work around “off-limit” foods, it gets easier. You realize that the relationship can be salvaged and the spark rekindled.
FoodAllergy.com, food allergies are on the rise, and some immunologists believe that there may be an environmental connection to the increase. This increase in diagnoses has not gone unnoticed by the food industry, which has responded with more allergy-friendly options than ever before. The store shelves now boast a plethora of products that are “gluten free” and “dairy free,” which makes it easier to find safe foods to eat. There’s an App for That
Know Your Symptoms
Food allergies are tricky. Symptoms can vary widely from individual to individual. Some people suffer from severe anaphylactic reactions that leave no doubt as to the cause, but others experience milder symptoms that are frequently overlooked. A runny nose, a mild cough or asthmatic symptoms, intestinal distress, or eczema can signal an allergic reaction to foods that you routinely consume. Keeping a food diary can help identify triggers so you can better recognize which foods to avoid. More Choices
Technology also makes coping with food allergies less daunting. Instead of spending hours at the grocery store straining your eyes to read the tiny print used for ingredient labels, consider splurging on an app. Simply enter a list of foods that trigger an allergic reaction, scan the bar code, and the app will alert you if the product contains any food on your “allergic list.” You can also download apps to help navigate restaurant menus while searching for allergy friendly fare, apps detailing how to deal with an allergic event, and apps to help share information regarding your specific allergens in case of an emergency. Allergy Free Cooking
Learning (or re-learning) how to cook might be one of the most daunting challenges for individuals living with food allergies. When the allergist bans milk, eggs, beef, soy, gluten, or any number of other ingredients, suddenly all of your tried and true recipes become a recipe for disaster! Losing the familiar foods of your childhood, those cherished family food traditions, may seem unbearable. Fortunately, you can find many amazing recipes painstakingly crafted by those who muddled down this road before you.
The Gluten Free Goddess (GlutenFreeGoddess.blogspot.com) contains recipes that are gluten free, and many are dairy-free and egg-free as well. She serves up her recipes with the quirky, good nature of a familiar friend. The site also contains valuable information on food substitutes, so you can adapt your beloved family recipes and then pass them down to future generations in an allergy-friendly form. Food allergies don’t have to mean the end of joyful cooking and eating. By harnessing the power of apps and the internet, and by taking control of your food choices and food preparation, you can begin to reclaim your passion for food and still stay safe.
“Food allergies don’t have to mean the end of joyful cooking and eating.”
Terri L. Wallace has navigated her family around eighteen food allergies, as well as Celiac disease. When she is not busy in the kitchen, she blogs about writing (Booklaunch-countdown.blogspot.com) and gluten free living (DevouringTheSeasons.blogspot.com).

“Mum” is Not the Only Word Five Ideas for Creating Fall Color Article Woodrow D. Weasel
F
rom football games to front doors, mums (chrysanthemums) are a well-known, popular fall flower, but they are not the only option for autumn color. Here are five great suggestions for keeping color in your garden even after summer fades.
1. Asters
This daisy-like perennial can paint your garden beautiful shades of blue and purple, colors not available among mum varieties. Asters also bloom red, white and pink. This plant flowers in spring, summer and fall, and attracts butterflies and bees. They make terrific cut flowers for fall arrangements. Asters enjoy slightly acidic soil that is well drained, and not heavy clay. They can be planted any time during the growing season. Asters will grow back and bloom again in spring if you keep them healthy this fall. 2. Marigold
For little pops of vibrant golds, copper and brass, these annuals are worth the one-time purchase for the beauty they add to your autumn array. They are easy to grow and take care of. Versatile and tough, marigolds are great in the garden, containers and as cut flowers. These cheery little guys bloom brightly all summer long and on into fall, but can be planted just for fall. Marigold will grow just about anywhere because they are not sensitive, but if you can provide full sun, well-drained and sandy or loam soil, they’ll be happiest. 3. Goldenrod
Many of the fall flower options offer round orbs of color, so to add some variety, consider goldenrod. Its vertical clusters of golden flowers add striking strokes of bright yellow to your landscape. Goldenrod was once considered a weed, so beware that it can be an aggressive grower. If this is a concern, look for varieties that are known to be less aggressive. It will grow almost anywhere, and is often seen in rock, wildflower and herb gardens. 4. Autumn Joy Sedum
Just as summer begins to lose its luster, sedum begins to shine. They remain light green most of summer, but just when your garden needs color the most, sedum transforms to light pink to burgundy, bringing joy as it is aptly named. The tiny flowers are clustered together creating mini bouquets right in your garden. 14
Newport Beach Lifestyle | October 2014
Sedum is an adaptable, dependable plant that is also easy to grow. Optimal conditions for sedum include fertile, moist soil in full sun, but it will grow in other conditions as well. 5. Montauk Daisies
This little flower is loaded with cheerful personality. Its bright white petals and yellow button center brighten any garden or table. It actually opens up in the morning and closes at night. Its leaves are equally attractive with their dark green color and shiny texture. Montauk Daisies flourish in highly acidic soil with full sun and need well-drained soil. They can be invasive, but who wouldn’t mind a whole yard full of these cheerful characters. Timing planting right is more of an art this time of year. Pay attention to what the weather is doing to be aware of the best window to plant. You definitely want to do it before autumn hits, but not in the scorching heat. A rainy period is a perfect chance to plant. Nothing against the magnificent mum, it’s just nice to know that there are lots of other options for creating color in your garden this fall, as well! Staying
How to stay fit through the holidays Article Heidi Darby
H
ere come the holidays. Every year they seem to creep up faster than ever before, tempting us to stray from a healthy diet. The season begins on Halloween, which tempts us with candy, and the temptations don’t stop until the new year. During these times, staying physically fit can be a challenge. Considering the constant influx of diets and exercise fads, finding a reliable way to stay in shape is often elusive. Luckily, the Newport Beach lifestyle promotes healthy living—even during the holidays. The weather, for one, allows us to be outdoors most of the year. Still, motivation isn’t always easily summoned when it comes to maintaining a fitness routine, especially when irresistible foods lurk around every corner. Fortunately, Newport Beach seems to cater to those seeking an active lifestyle, and judging by the many fitness centers that line Pacific Coast Highway and the nearby areas, guidance for staying fit shouldn’t be hard to find. The challenge, however, is to take that first step, and keep going. Local fitness gurus can help combat the temptation of sweet and savory holiday delights with tips for healthy eating habits and exercise. Their varying approaches to fitness can lead to a fresh approach to an existing health regiment, or pave the way for new habits. 18

Routine and Healthy Living
For 20 years, Mark Kane experimented with personal fitness. He explored various approaches, and ultimately discovered firsthand what works and what doesn’t. Twelve years ago, he turned his passion for fitness into a profession, and embarked on a fulltime journey as a performance consultant. Currently wrapping up his master’s degree in performance psychology with a certification from the Applied Association of Sports Psychology, the Orange County native takes pride in providing clients of all ages and walks of life with results, regardless of fitness fads. Kane shares that it’s a lack of knowledge that keeps us from completing regular workouts. Reaching out to knowledgeable experts for advice in regard to fitness is crucial to physical success, whether it be during the holidays or at any other time. Kane says that turning exercise into a habit instead of an accomplishment can greatly increase one’s chances for long-time success. “I’ve been at this myself for over 30 years, and people ask me, ‘How do you do it,’” Kane says. “I tell them it’s like taking a shower. You wouldn’t wake up one day and say, I took a shower yesterday; I’m clean for the rest of my life! You shower daily
to avoid being offensive, and to be at your best. Exercise is no different. It requires regular attention to look, feel and be your best. Make it a regular habit and just do it.” Kane has earned a loyal client base with his realistic regiment and straightforward goals. Get motivated: Athletes and fitness enthusiasts of every kind—professional, amateur or aspiring—all share the common goal of accomplishing more Mark Kane than they did the day before. The safest, most efficient way to reach your fitness goal is by starting slowly, and working up to more difficult challenges. Don’t be tempted by crash diets and extreme fitness crazes. Avoid flashy feats of fitness: Performing impressive feats of fitness are admirable, but it poses a safety risk for the general population. Any exercise that involves heavy or high-impact movements like maxing, table jumps or cowbell swings can apply a great deal of pressure to the body, especially to the lower back and knees. If strenuous exercise is your goal, consult a professional beforehand. Family Fitness and Accountability
Personal trainer Zoe Bertoia says there are as many approaches to fitness as there are diets. “What works for me is having a variety of workouts and cross-training,” says Bertoia, a Newport Beach resident. “My body responds best when I incorporate different types of workouts into my weekly routine. I am at less risk for injury, I don’t get bored and my body stays challenged.” Bertoia says one key point to keep in mind while exercising is that it needs to be fun. If you forget to enjoy yourself, it’s likely the desired exercise routine will not become part of your everyday life. Keep a positive attitude, smile and don’t be afraid to try as many new things as possible. This philosophy naturally applies to group exercise. Whether with a friend or the whole family, working out with others makes the experience more enjoyable. She advises clients to prepare a weekly workout routine of two cardio days, two strength days and a “mix-it-up” day that allows for a more adventurous workout like paddle boarding, hiking or participating in a new class. Second-party accountability is beneficial, and applies to exercise whether it be with a friend or the entire family. Having a friend join in on the activity, or involving family members not only provides motivation, but also makes working out a social experience that yields results. Fitness goals can be achieved together. Make physical time an adventure versus a chore and you’ll please everyone involved.
“As a busy parent, it’s also the only way I can get a workout in sometimes,” says Bertoia, a wife and mother of two young children. “I tell my kids about the benefits of exercise and being fit. They understand how good it feels to be able to be able to run and swim and play for hours without getting tired!” Newport Beach residents with busy lifestyles have lots of opportunities for year-round physical activities. Walking: Going for a walk in the evening can potentially reduce television-watching or post-dinner snacking. Choose two or three locations to frequent and allow your partner or family to choose the spot. Swimming: Living in Southern California makes swimming almost a year-round option, plus it’s great exercise. Slip into a private or community pool, or visit a beach. While you’re there, you can run, build sandcastles, or dig colossal holes. Climbing stairs: If overall health permits, taking the stairs at Big Corona Beach is great way to exercise with a partner or older children. The ocean breeze and picturesque scenery are the icing on the cake. Clean Eating and Holistic Healthcare
Patricia Pinto and Wayne Daniels operate independent businesses at their shared facility. Pinto heads Holistic Core Integration and Daniels leads Holistic Health and Fitness. While they serve their clients as separate entities, the pair’s philosophies are the same. No typical gym equipment or attitudes will be found anywhere on the premises. Instead, tailored exercise, stretching, breathing and mental healing are the preferred methods of training. The gurus are holistic health practitioners who believe in treating the mind, body and spirit to achieve health, wellness and fitness. Pinto’s passion for combining physical fitness with a holistic approach largely stems from her father and grandmother. Her father was a drill sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corp. and an amateur bodybuilder. Her grandmother was a natural healer in Mexico until the age of 93. This led to Pinto’s passion and approach to fitness. “We’re showing people how to heal themselves through diet, stretching, breathing and exercise,” Pinto says. “We’ll help you discover what’s making you feel bad, and find new ways to Zoe Bertoia start making you feel good.” Daniels overcame pancreatitis through holistic methods. He now targets bad habits that may appear non-threatening, but actually hold clients back from healthy living. He states that people often become entrenched in poor daily habits, and quickly accept continued >

fatigue and body aches as part of life. He asserts that by taking a holistic approach, people begin moving toward an all-encompassing healing process. “We show you how to integrate parts of your body. I’ve been exercising for decades, but it’s only been over the last six years that I’ve integrated and awakened my body through movement and eating,” says Daniels. Both agree that food plays a huge role in fitness. Bypassing processed, packaged foods can lead to a better life. “I know my farmers, and I know what they’re feeding their animals,” says Pinto. “If you eat pure and clean, focus on correcting misalignments in the body, rest, love yourself and find quiet time, everything else will fall into place.” Clean eating involves a shift in daily habits, and results in a reinvigorated state of living. Rotate your diet. By introducing new, healthy foods into your diet, you’ll ensure that
your body is ingesting a variety of vitamins and minerals. This also helps your body eliminate foods that cause fatigue, lethargy or other adverse reactions. Try to incorporate new foods into your diet every four days, and take note of the ones that make you feel best. Feed your mind, body and soul: “Your food is your mood.” Nutrition not only
plays a vital role in producing a healthy body, it also assists with a healthy state of mind. Junk food causes a variety of unfavorable side effects, and has an adverse effect on sleep. Avoiding sugary, processed food aids in rest, mental clarity and a healthy digestive function, as well as physical fitness.

What’s Cooking: Perfect Pumpkin Breakfast Treats Article Suzette Zara | Photography Joy Reynolds
P
umpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins…They are everywhere this time of year! Those iconic orange symbols of Halloween not only make perfect jack-o-lanterns and tasty pie, but pumpkins also help create moist, delicious muffins and nutritious smoothies. Packed with Vitamins A and C, pumpkins are a nutritional powerhouse of antioxidants and dietary fiber. Amazingly low in calories with only 26 calories per 100 grams and no saturated fat or cholesterol, pumpkins are also a rich source of minerals, including copper, calcium, potassium and phosphorus. The “zeaxanthin” in the pumpkin helps filter UV rays in the retina of the eye, helping to protect from age-related macular disease (ARMD) in the elderly. There is no shame in using canned pumpkin; many professional bakers use it. Plus, the nutritional benefits are nearly the same in canned and fresh pumpkin. These easy pumpkin muffins will warm your kitchen with the cozy fall aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg, while the healthy pumpkin smoothie is like pumpkin pie in a glass, without the fat or calories.

Ultra-Easy Pumpkin Spice Muffins (4 Ingredients)
These muffins are truly the easiest pumpkin muffins you will ever bake. Only four ingredients, starting with a mix, they are nearly impossible to ruin. Perfect for breakfast or dessert, they stay moist for days, topped with tasty cinnamon streusel or just drizzled with honey. They bake up delicious as mini-muffins or as a cake. Personalize these muffins by adding a cup of your favorite chopped nuts or fresh cranberries. Ingredients:
1 box (18.25 ounces) spice cake mix (any brand) ½ teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon nutmeg 1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie mix) Streusel topping (optional): 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/3 cup light brown sugar ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon nutmeg 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, cubed small
Instructions:
Heat oven to 350°F. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners. Place all ingredients in a large mixing bowl (Note: Disregard directions on cake mix box, adding only pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg to the dry mix). Stir until well combined, either by hand or using an electric mixer. Add nuts or cranberries, as de-
sired. Spoon into paper-lined muffin cups, about 2/3 full (batter will be thick). Smooth top of batter to create neat muffins. If using streusel topping, sprinkle each muffin with about 2 teaspoons of streusel topping. Bake at 350°F for 16-20 minutes. For streusel topping: In a large bowl or food processor, combine all ingredients (use pastry blender if mixing by hand). Pulse to combine, until batter is small balls, the size of peas. Yield: 12 muffins. Per serving: Calories: 128; Fat 3.8g; Carbs: 23.2g. Cost Per Serving: $.63. Pumpkin Spice Smoothie
Want some pumpkin pie in a glass, without the fat or calories? Start your day with this creamy, light pumpkin smoothie. Not only will the pumpkin give you a vitamin burst without lots of calories, but the extra fiber in pumpkin will keep you fuller, longer!
Ingredients:
2 cups unsweetened almond milk (or, use standard 2 percent dairy milk) 1 cup canned pumpkin 1 large banana 2 tablespoons golden raisins (optional) 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg ½ teaspoon ground ginger Instructions:
Place all ingredients in blender; blend until smooth. Serve over ice. Yield: 2 servings. Per serving: Calories: 165; Fat 4.6g; Carbs: 34g; Protein 6.3g. Cost Per Serving: $.95.

Cleaning Up Cancer The Maids Team Up with Cleaning For A Reason
F
ighting cancer is difficult enough, but living with it is even tougher; that’s where The Maids and Cleaning for A Reason step in. Cleaning For A Reason is a non-profit foundation serving the entire United States and Canada. The organization partners with different maid services around the country to offer professional house cleaning to help women undergoing treatment for any type of cancer. To date, they have provided more than 17,000 cleanings for women with cancer, with a value of more than $4 million in donated cleanings, and they have partnered with more than 1,000 maid services. The Maids Owner Jerry Dino is proud to celebrate six years of partnership with the national organization. “I have been involved with the foundation for over six years and The Maids have provided an average of $10,000 in free cleanings per year.” Dino says. “Let’s face it, most if not all of us have been affected in one way or another by cancer. I’ve lost a number of friends and family to this horrible disease. Most recently, my father passed away from lung cancer. I am happy and honored that my company can help.” The nomination process is simple. Any woman 19 or older who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer is eligible. Go to CleaningForAReason.org, look for the patients tab, click on it and fill out the easy-to-follow application. A representative from Cleaning For A Reason will contact you. The application may be submitted by a friend, relative, social worker or even an oncology 26

nurse. Patients should not contact the cleaning provider directly; they must work through The Cleaning For A Reason Foundation. “When The Maids receives a call to clean a home for a cancer patient or everyday client, we use a 22-Step Healthy Touch® Deep Cleaning System,” says Dino. “The Maids is the only franchised residential cleaning service to clean for health, combining environmentally preferable cleaning supplies and state-of-the-art equipment with a methodical process to maintain the healthiest living environment possible for families. “Upon arrival to a patient’s home, we always ask the customer if there is anything specific that they’d like us to do, or not do. From there, we clean accordingly. Since most of our cleaning products are environmentally friendly, the client does not have to worry about harsh chemicals or long-lasting odors. The stronger products that we carry are only used when necessary, and only in the bathtub, shower or toilet.” For Dino and his crew at The Maids, donating cleaning services to cancer patients in Orange County is a simple and clearcut choice. “The benefits for these patients are countless,” he says. “Certainly, a clean home is significant, but less dust, dirt and allergens make for a healthier environment as well. If you are sick and fighting disease, the last thing you have the time or energy for is cleaning, and we are honored to help.” To contact The Maids, call 714.838.2278 or visit Maids.com.

Specialty Pets Inspire Kids to Learn A
ll pets bring us closer to the natural world, but specialty pets, such as fish, small pets and reptiles, provide a unique way to inspire kids to learn about the world around them. As teachers and families gear up for the start of a new school year, pets can help teach kids responsibility and how to keep a routine. They can sharpen kids’ math and science skills through activities such as measuring food and water, keeping track of days of the week on a calendar and studying information about their care needs.
explain that too much noise scares a pet, and the child will understand the need for good behavior. • Providing a better understanding of the natural world. Learning about a country or climate becomes more meaningful when a child can interact directly with an animal that has roots there. • Allowing kids to relate to their peers. Bonding with a pet can give kids common ground with each other and help build friendships. Create a healthy habitat
Learning in the classroom and beyond
Specialty pets can help make learning fun and help students learn more than just traditional academics. By working with their peers at school (or siblings at home), students learn teamwork and responsibility. These pets also provide hands-on learning and teach lessons that will serve students their whole lives. According to Joel Sartore, National Geographic photographer and specialty pet owner, specialty pets offer many life skills and learning opportunities, such as: • Teaching kids responsibility and the importance of routines. Pets need regular food, water and cleaning of their habitats, and these tasks make learning valuable skills fun. • Helping kids learn to care for something beyond themselves. Kids often see pets as friends and want to protect them. Adults can 28

If you are considering bringing a specialty pet into your classroom or home, you will need to provide an appropriate habitat. High-quality pet products that mimic animals’ natural environments are the best option to support pet health. Such environments can also spark the curiosity of children into the world of specialty pets with products that represent their habitats in realistic
and authentic ways. The pet experts at National Geographic and PetSmart offer the following recommendations to get you started. For aquatics pets: The Aqua Oasis Aquarium is a complete starter kit, including an internal power filter with filtration media and a submersible heater. Available in various sizes, it features a curved, seamless bow-front, allowing for uninterrupted views with easy access for feeding. Low-profile hoods and integrated LED lighting add elegance, while the addition of coordinated 3-D backgrounds and decor allow pet parents to create a natural environment.
For reptile pets: The Reptile Sanctuary ensures your pet will stay securely inside while allowing pet parents to feed, play with and interact through various points around the tank. Depending on the pet’s natural environment, the National Geographic line has tanks designed as desert or tropical climates and coordinated 3-D backgrounds and decor can be added to enhance these natural themes. For small pets: The Exploration Loft is available in two sizes and offers a 360-degree view into multi-level play areas and your pets’ daily lives and interesting instinctual behavior. A skylight provides easy access and fresh airflow, plus cleaning is simple with a removable top.
For additional information on the care of specialty pets, including proper habitats, feeding and more, visit PetSmart.com/NatGeo. Teachers can apply for a grant to receive a pet in their classroom at PetSmart.com/Teachers

Parting Thoughts
Like a Good Neighbor … Words Lisa Harrison
W
e’ve all seen the commercials for the insurance company. For years they’ve told us they’ll be there, just like a good neighbor. But I’ve been hearing many conversations lately that make me wonder what’s happened to our ‘Good Neighbor’ mentality. Growing up in the 1970s in a small suburban town, I knew each and every one of my neighbors quite well. The Cunninghams and Caseys lived next door. The Taylors, McMichaels, Adams and Richmonds all lived across the street. I went to school with their kids, some of whom were my age, some a few years older or younger. Age didn’t matter when we spent endless summer nights playing flashlight tag and ghost in the graveyard. When any of them went on vacation we could earn a bit of spending money taking out their trash, collecting mail or feeding various pets. And then there was Aunt Martha. She wasn’t anyone’s aunt but that’s what we all called her. She and her husband didn‘t have any children but she was the most loved woman on the block. She kept a calendar with every child’s birthday and each year she made us a bag of popsicles for our special day. These weren’t just silly frozen juice popsicles. This old-fashioned recipe involved cooking Jello and several other ingredients to make the best popsicles ever. She froze them in those metal trays with the handle you had to pop up to release the square cubes. She kept track of our favorite flavors and made sure our bag had more of those than any other. Mine was root beer. I learned important life lessons from these folks. I learned
38
Newport Beach Lifestyle | October 2014
how to fine tune my sales pitch whether I was selling cookies for the Girl Scouts or cases of fruit for the marching band. I learned to write thank you notes for bags of popsicles. I learned I didn’t want to be a dog owner thanks to the McMichael’s two black labs and the doggie doo-doo scooping. And I learned that loving thy neighbor involves shoveling Aunt Martha’s driveway and not getting paid to do so. If you have knowledge of the Blizzard of ’79 that crippled Chicago, then you know there was a lot of shoveling. But today, I hear friends talk about not knowing any of their neighbors. I hear them complain about the neighbor with the loud music or the bouncing basketball late at night. I sit through homes association meetings where folks want some volunteer board member to tell a neighbor how to take care of their property or when to put out their trash. I jog mile after mile along the neighborhood streets and am amazed at the number of dog owners who ignore the responsibility of doo-doo scooping that comes with dog ownership. At what point did we forget our responsibility to be good neighbors? When did we stop talking to our neighbors? Building relationships builds community. If you don’t know your neighbors, the ones whose homes flank yours, I hope you’ll step outside of your comfort zone this spring, ring the bell and introduce yourself. Make yourself available and share your concerns in person. It builds a better neighborhood. It’ll build a better community.
