Ben Would Go S
eptember has always been my favorite month. There’s a sense of calm that washes over the city. The buzz of the summer fades and the beaches are restored to peacefulness.
Being born and raised in Newport Beach, I’ve seen a few summers come and go. None like this last one, however. On July 6, a red flag warned beachgoers of rough conditions. We were hit with a hurricane swell. Pounding waves and a rip current made the water brown and murky, and treacherous for unassuming visitors who came to the beach for a day of fun.

Ben Carlson, a veteran lifeguard, jumped from a lifeguard boat to save a swimmer in distress. The swimmer survived, but Ben disappeared into the rough surf. His body was recovered later that night near the 28th Street jetty. Sadly, he became the first lifeguard in Newport’s 100-year history to die in the line of duty. He died just days after his 32nd birthday.
account manager Ken Finocchio
For me, as a parent, Ben’s death represents such loss. It’s tragic when anyone this young passes away. I think about all the things he will miss— celebrations and moments with family and friends, starting his own family. It’s just so unbelievable. In some ways, the innocence of our city has been shattered.

At Ben’s paddle-out service, held Sunday, July 13, people wore hats with sayings that included, “Ben Would Go” and “Ben Did Go,” a saying that originated with Hawaiian surfer and lifeguard Eddie Aikau, who died in 1978 after trying to rescue his crew when a boat they were on capsized in stormy waters. I believe the sentiment captures Ben’s essence perfectly.

Although I didn’t know Ben personally, his spirit touched me. I understand he was a world-class surfer and an excellent waterman. I find it ironic, yet strangely comforting at the same time, that he died doing what he loved the most. As the harsh reality of losing a Newport Beach lifeguard slowly sets in for all of us, I know this city will never forget Ben. I believe we all have a new appreciation and respect for every single Newport Beach lifeguard, police officer and firefighter who risks their life every day to keep us safe.

TOLL ROADS ON THE RISE The cost of driving Orange County’s four toll roads rose again recently. The rates increased by 1 to 5 cents for FasTrak customers on the 133, 241 and 261 toll roads, and by 4 to 60 cents on the 73 toll road, depending on the location and time of travel. The largest increase was the peak hour rate on state Route 73, with the toll rising 10 percent for the Catalina View Mainline Toll Location. The agencies define peak hour as 8-9 a.m. northbound, and 5-6 p.m. southbound.
Seal Beach in the Loop Making Seal Beach bike paths safer this year is the hope of transportation officials in Orange County as work progresses on the OC Loop cycling path program. New signage and increased buffering along Pacific Coast Highway and elsewhere in the city are part of the Loop program update given this week in an outline of the final phase of an ambitious 66 miles of bicycle paths throughout the county. Most of the project has been completed, including trails in Seal Beach along PCH, the San Gabriel River, Coyote Creek and the Santa Ana River bike paths. The balance of the county project could be completed in the next few years. 10

H
ectic mornings, busy schedules and afternoon snack cravings can make it difficult to eat foods that are tasty, healthy and satisfying. Instead of grabbing a bag of packaged cookies or vending machine chips, have a healthy alternative available for you and your family that’s delicious and satisfying. “Better food options keep energy levels high in-between meals,” says Nancy Siler, vice president of consumer affairs at Wilton. “By planning ahead with healthy snacks or mini meals, you’ll have great choices available, even with a chaotic schedule.”
Try these tips from Wilton for healthier, tasty treats:
• Think Greek. With more protein and richness than other yogurt varieties, Greek yogurt can be used in many different ways. Try it in fruit dips or as an alternative for mayo or sour cream. You can even substitute it for some of the butter in baking recipes to reduce calories and fat. • Make it fun. Let kids get creative by using cookie cutters on low-fat cheese slices and whole grain bread or tortillas to build their own snacks. Or, have them make funny faces using natural peanut butter, raisins and fruit, like sliced bananas, apples or pears. • Sneak in veggies. Bakers are using veggies more than ever before in new, inspirational baked treats. Many vegetables have a natural sweetness, so your family won’t taste the difference during snack time. Try sweet potato cupcakes or carrot and zucchini cookies. Make this recipe for Squash and Banana Mini Muffins for a quick and healthy snack that’s delicious whether after school or while at work. 5-10 minutes: Recipes such as Traditional Hummus, Cilantro Jalapeño Hummus, and Olive Tapenade require very little prep time and zero cook time. But don’t let these easy recipes fool you – they offer big flavor with very little effort. Serve alongside pre-cut fresh vegetables and pita chips for a complete appetizer. 20-30 minutes: Mediterranean Pasta Salad, Macaroni with Yogurt Sauce, and Chicken Skewers offer a Mediterranean twist on potluck classics, but require less time and effort than the original. Up to 1 hour: Lamb Meatballs, Hummus Appetizer Bites, and Tabbouleh Salad are excellent savory options, while Coconut Macaroons provide something sweet to add to the dessert table. New Technology Helps Prevent Missed Cell Phone Calls While At Home I
t’s a problem that happens all too often to cell phone users nationally–an important cell call at home goes unanswered because a phone ringtone is turned off, the phone is out of reach, or it is muffled in a pocket, briefcase, drawer or car. Now, a first of its kind, Bluetooth-ready “home base ringer” called Renny is ringing out the old and ringing in the new. Renny is designed with patented technologies never used before to help make sure cell phone rings get heard–and calls get answered. There are other wireless Bluetooth answering speakers on the market, but while those units are basically voice/ sound amplifying speakers, Renny from Olens Technology is more of an all-inclusive “home base ringer” station, the first ever to hit the market. Renny combines the best of both worlds by fixing what is wrong with those similar cell phone answering products and offering aspects that the others currently don’t.
16
Newport Beach Lifestyle | September 2014
What makes Renny different?
The Renny Home Ringer works anywhere in a home or office by automatically connecting wirelessly to any mobile phone within a 200 foot line of site range–the longest in its category. Even if a phone is on silent or vibrate, Renny will pick up the call and even announce who is calling via its SilentSync technology. The unit allows anyone to answer the call, select ring tones, and even stream music from a smart phone to its powerful loudspeaker using 3D Digital Dynamic Bass technology. Renny also comes equipped with a built-in quality microphone with high-sensitivity and hands-free function for clear voice call answering and communication. Unlike other systems, Renny offers a DualSync technology that allows up to two mobile phones to be connected at once. Other products on the market cannot be used as a reliable full-time home
ringer station because they automatically shut off after the phone is out of range for 10 minutes and they tend to experience multiple interference issues when the phone is used in certain parts of the house. While other speaker products must be turned on or off when you want to use them, the rechargeable Renny is always on and ready and works unnoticeably in the background until it is needed. Other speaker products serve as the default audio source for all call functions and steal the signal every time they connect causing dropped or lost calls to the speaker. Renny connects and disconnects repeatedly without any interference when the phone is in use and automatically selects the correct audio source to use during all calls via its AutoLinx technology. The Renny is quite affordable, selling for $99.95. RennyRinger.com.

Strategies for Success
8 Ways to Prepare for the School Year Ahead Article Lysa Christopher
A
s the memory of summer vacation begins to fade, and we shift our focus to preparing for the new school year, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. The mere thought of full schedules, endless driving and implementing a study regime can send the toughest parents packing. After all, wasn’t it just a few short months ago that we were beach bound and carefree? Take a deep breath, regroup and face the facts—it’s time to put a good strategy into action for the impending school year. Devising a plan will ultimately save a lot of time and anxiety later (especially with younger children). The following are a few tips and tricks to help make the school year a breeze.
The Game Plan Shift Schedules. The lazy, unstructured days of summer are ending,
and so is your child’s freedom to sleep in and eat erratically. Ease him back into a school schedule by shifting bedtime back to a school-day times and waking them closer to the hour they’ll need to rise.
Clean House. Go through your child’s clothes and get rid of any-
thing he may have outgrown or worn threadbare. It’ll be easier to choose outfits if there’s less clutter. Do a thorough cleaning of your child’s room and study area as well. Getting rid of last year’s school junk is cathartic and it will help you devise a comprehensive list of any essential items he’ll need for the upcoming year. Create an Effective Study Area. Designate a quiet, well-lit area for studying. Don’t allow your child to study in front of the television, in an area of your home where distractions may occur, or in a comfortable chair or a bed, which may cause drowsiness. If there isn’t a quiet spot at home, take your child to the library. Have older children turn off their cell phones while they study to avoid distractions. School Papers. Set up file baskets or bins marked “To Be Signed,” “From School,” and “To School,” so your child can deposit papers you need to see in a regular place right after school and pick up things to go “To School” each morning. This will save on digging crumpled field trip forms out from the bottom of backpacks. Clutter. At every grade level, as the school year progresses a
mountain of paper seems to come home with your child. Throw away unnecessary papers and continually monitor what you actually need to keep.
Personal Calendar. Many schools give children a daily planner.
This is great if your child actually fills it out and you get to see it more than once throughout the school year. Give your child her own personal calendar to keep at home. Have them write in project due dates and special school activities, and fill in sports and after school activities. They will feel empowered, and may learn time management skills along the way. Family Calendar. Set up an area with a large calendar so every-
one in your family can see everyone else’s plans for that month. For added organization, color-code each family member and keep colored markers nearby so everyone can easily mark in their plans. Pen in after-school activities, lessons and family time.
Binder. Create a binder as a place to keep all of the school papers you need. It will eliminate the clutter around your home and keep everything safe in one, easy-to-find place.

A diamond in the desert Article and Photography Colin Roohan
I
had my camera tightly clutched in my right hand while my left hand familiarized itself with the handle above the SUV’s window. The Toyota’s engine sounded dangerously close to red-lining but the driver’s menacing grin let me know not to worry. Suddenly, the sound of the accelerator stopped, which meant one thing— soon we would meet another sand dune peak. As the SUV summited the dune, our driver made a quick, yet calculated turn of the wheel which caused the whole vehicle, shrieking journalists and all, to fishtail down the dune’s face. The 60-something Swiss gentleman sitting shotgun looked green around the gills while the other passengers seemed thrilled to be ascending again, as was I. The car was full of nervous energy, the sound something akin to a pre-teen girl’s slumber party: fits of hysterics and the occasional elated yelp. Before coming to the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.), I thought all romanticism for the desert had been lost to grandiose modern amenities. But when you’re told you are on the way to a feast in the middle of the desert to eat kabobs, watch belly-dancing and smoke a bit of hookah, all preconceptions of this posh country are left behind.

Newport Beach Lifestyle | September 2014
I am in Abu Dhabi, a name which summons images of wealthy sheiks speeding in Ferraris and unimaginable high-rises jutting toward the sky. Yet despite appearances, the U.A.E.’s capital city is putting forth great effort to balance a culturally rich past with an economically rich present. Often, when people talk about the U.A.E., it is in mentioning Dubai, with its over-the-top glitz, palm-tree shaped man-made islands and all things flashy, but this is not the case in Abu Dhabi. Sure they have their share of impressive skyscrapers, but Abu Dhabi seems to prefer investing in more practical things like manufacturing, international banking and trade. Abu Dhabi is the capital of the U.A.E., and even though each individual emirate’s sheikh has sovereignty over his region, the sheikh of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bid Zayed al-Nahayan, acts as president over the federal government. Sheikh Khalifa’s foresight of the area depleting its oil reserves is a large concern, thus his influence to decrease oil exports has been a strong one. And, in addition to other business sectors, tourism is where Abu Dhabi currently seems to be placing a large focus. And, right-
ly so, as travel in Abu Dhabi can be wide-ranging. It offers a mélange of newer attractions mixed in with some of the peninsula’s culturally rich traditions. On the first day of my tour, I was introduced to a very important part of the traditional nomadic lifestyle: falconry. Falconry has been practiced for centuries in the U.A.E. Traditionally, the practice was a means of hunting, but today the falcons do not get to hunt, as it has been made illegal by the government. They foresaw that the falcons would overhunt their natural prey, ultimately causing extinction (therefore, traveling to other Middle Eastern countries to hunt is common). I was given a tour at Abu Dhabi’s Falcon Hospital, one of the largest medicinal facilities for birds of prey in the world. I entered the hospital’s introduction room where Dr. Margit Gabriele Muller, head doctor and program director, presented a brief history of the importance and significance of the bird within the Bedouin (nomadic) lifestyle. From there, I was led through several sets of double doors while Muller pointed out awards and accomplishments the hospital had achieved throughout the years. Yet all I could think about was getting the opportunity to have a falcon perched on my arm. Before entering the room where falcon check-ups are performed, Muller made sure to mention how sudden movements could panic falcons; it was great advice as I enjoy having my jugular intact! Upon entering the room, I noticed a faint musty smell, but when I saw the regal falcons lined up on wooden perches the annoyance of the less-than-savory scent quickly dissipated. At this point there must have been close to 40 falcons all sitting silently roughly a foot off the ground. Muller and one of her technicians allowed us to watch a beak and talon trimming and, after the bird awoke from sedation, Muller asked if I wanted to have a falcon perch on my wrist. I jumped at the opportunity, quickly put on a
thick glove, and followed the tech over to a beautiful falcon. The technician transferred the bird onto my glove. I immediately felt the incredible strength of the bird’s talon. It was then that I understood how the bird could crush its prey so effortlessly. Holding a falcon is something I had always wanted to do, and although I didn’t do so while draped in white perched atop a Persian steed in the desert scouring the horizon for any sign of movement, I was happy to spend time with the stunning falcons at the hospital. In addition to having a connection to nature, the citizens of Abu Dhabi have a strong connection to their faith. My tour guide wanted us to see the connection first hand. I was taken to the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque, an extravagant mosque that is one of the most stunning places of worship I have ever seen, perhaps even rivalling the Taj Mahal. It was late in the afternoon. The setting sun created a particularly surreal, iridescent finish that illuminated the mosque’s pearlescent façade, while the muezzin’s call to prayer melodically called from loudspeakers, adding to the enchantment. I noticed most visitors were silent and wrapped so heavily in their thoughts that blank stares decorated their faces. This was one of those incredible destinations that force you stop and reflect. The next day, my destinations were in stark contrast to the desert cookout and grandiose mosque of the previous day. The plan was to visit some of the newer, more extravagant attractions in Abu Dhabi, starting with the Emirates Palace Hotel. After clearing security, I was told by the tour guide that this was “beyond a five-star resort.” I quickly believed it as we passed a gold-dispensing vending machine near the lobby. Our planned trip to the hotel’s private beach was foiled due to a mystery foreign leader who requested that the beach remain private for the afternoon. From the hotel, I was taken to Yas Island, designed as a shopping and entertainment hub. On the island are several attractions, including a water park, a mangrove forest and the Yas Marina Circuit which hosts an annual Formula One event. I had the continued >

most fun at Ferrari World, a theme park, which is home to the fastest roller coaster on the planet. I’m not normally a theme park kind of guy, but when you get the opportunity to ride the fastest roller coaster on the planet, you take it. The Formula Rossa roller coaster reaches its top speed of 150 mph exactly five seconds into the ride. I was given a pair of what looked like lab goggles and took my seat. The restraint system, a neck-and-head support, cradled me. As the ride operator blurted out something about “g-force” and “turn count,” I think I must have momentarily blacked out, because the next thing I recall is the car being slowly pulled back to the accompaniment of an archaic ratcheting sound. The lights on the side of the car were red, yellow and green, and resembled a real Formula One race starting line. As one light brightly turned to green, my car was catapulted forward with so much propulsion that I could feel my cheeks flapping violently. My body felt weightless so I closed my eyes and relaxed my grip on the bar in front me, and for a second I felt like I was flying like a super hero. While eating breakfast on my last morning in Abu Dhabi, I longed for more time there. I sat reminiscing about my trip to the desert, the SUV racing against a setting sun to get us to a barbecue. We had passed a camel farm where a man leaned against a stockade dressed in traditional Bedouin garb: a white robe and a keffiyeh topped by an agal (black cord). He held a long stick in his left hand, and his right hand held a mobile phone to his ear. As he watched us from behind sunglasses, I remember thinking this moment embodied Abu Dhabi for me: a nation keeping the balance between old and new, while looking stylish in the act.

Tips for a Great School Day How your kids win with breakfast
T
here are various habits that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. But one healthy habit in particular, the routine of having a nutritious breakfast every morning, is one that can positively impact your family. A nutritious breakfast is important to fuel your body and brain after an overnight fast, and provide the nutrition you need to start the day. For parents who want their children to be their best, good nutrition at breakfast can make all the difference. In fact a good breakfast is just as important as having sharp pencils and the right gym shoes.
a rich source of protein and 21 vitamins and minerals, including calcium to help build strong bones. • Mix Up Lunches A lunch consisting of a sandwich, cheese stick and apple can be boring after just a few days. Turn last night’s leftovers into a delicious lunchtime meal. For example, grilled chicken can be turned into a wrap, or taco meat can be a perfect topping for salad or rice. This type of repurposing can save busy parents time and money throughout the school year.
Tips to start the day right
To help your kids get the right start to the school day, follow these nutrition and wellness tips: • Be a Healthy Role Model Kids emulate everything their parents do, including eating habits when mealtime rolls around. Show your kids that making smart, healthy choices is something that is important and vital to you. When they see you choosing vegetables and fruits over junk food, they will want to follow in your footsteps. When they adopt these types of eating habits, they’ll have the proper fuel to help get them through their school days. • Stock Up on Simple Options Do you ever have those hectic mornings when you’re trying to get everyone out the door? Easy-to-make breakfast options are great to have on hand, such as Carnation Breakfast Essentials® nutritional drinks and bars. These convenient products offer an easy and nutritious way for your kids to start their day right, with 30

• Get a Good Night’s Sleep A great day in the classroom starts with a restful night of quality, restorative sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, kids between ages 3-5 should get between 11-13 hours, while kids between ages 5-12 should get 10-11 hours of sleep. Create a good environment for sleep, which consists of a quiet, dark and cool room that is free of distractions, such as televisions, computers and smartphones. • Make Breakfast Fun Keep the options for this important morning meal exciting for your kids by mixing in their favorite flavors. Smoothies are a kid favorite that can be quickly created with low fat milk, frozen fruit and a packet of Carnation Breakfast Essentials® powder drink mix. So help your children be their very best by incorporating these tips into your family routine. For helpful recipes and additional tips, visit carnationbreakfastessentials.com.

ton Hotel on June 12. With 15 of the world’s finest automobile companies participating in one of five different categories, journalists and automobile specialists were able to see, drive, and ultimately judge what their favorite cars were.
They were randomly selected to evaluate automobiles in two categories—Performance/Roadster and Super Luxury/Exotic Convertibles—and the remaining three were Luxury, Full-Size and Small Convertible. Automakers included Audi, Bentley,
Chevrolet, BMW, Ford, Mazda, Fiat, Infiniti, Jaguar, Jeep, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche and Volkswagen. While every model judged was a joy to drive, there could only be one chosen from each category through a numbers system. Once the ballots were tallied, all winners were announced during a gala later that Thursday evening. We congratulate all the winners and look forward to going topless in Miami again in the future.

Parting Thoughts
Another D-Minus Summer Words Denise Snodell
F
or me, the phrase “Back to School!” stirs up feelings of failure. I know others swoon when the calendar flips to August, and for many reasons. End of summer vacation means kids will go to bed earrrrrrrlier. They will meet new calculus-obsessed friends. They will get smarter. They will have something to do that doesn’t involve game controllers, over-chlorinated water, arguing, whining, or, if they’re teens, sleeping until the crack of noon. Not that I know anything about that last one. For me, “Back to School!” time is a wake-up call. It forces me to evaluate what happened the previous few months. Or rather, what did not happen. This is when I prepare myself for a painful tumble in my own vicious cycle of hope and disappointment. Every April or May, I feel like an overfilled water balloon of enthusiasm just wanting to burst on the scene where accomplished/ organized people dwell. I make plans. I dream. I set so many ambitious goals for myself and my sons. Here’s the springtime dialogue, if only in my head: “This is the summer it’s all gonna happen, guys! First, we’ll organize your rooms to the point where we might see the floor! After that, we’ll enrich our minds. We’ll go to museums. We’ll study ‘til dawn. We’ll learn new skills, scale sequoia trees, volunteer, write to our elected officials, watch foreign movies with subtitles, alphabetize the spice rack—no, no—grow our own spices first, then store them in bottles we crafted ourselves in glass blowing class and then alphabetize from black pepper to thyme.”
38
Newport Beach Lifestyle | September 2014
I exaggerated my thoughts up there. I avoid movies with subtitles. But when I consider the history of my parenting journey, every summer has ended up mostly unproductive. To begin with, I am the ultimate ball-dropper. From the time my guys were little, I would fail to register them on time for the fun camps. (To this day, the word “register” is my shiver-inducing kryptonite.) Like clockwork, I’d get word of something awesome a week too late, only to learn the department of recreation’s ultimate experience sold out the first day of registration. “CAMP FULL” became my pouty mantra. My kids’ summers defaulted to suffering through leftover day camps like “Mud Pies ‘N Math!” or “Exploring Folk Music.” Today, my guys are teens who are becoming independent young men. Yet they still require some adult-orchestrated structure (cattle prodding) because they are, in fact, teens. And I continue to drop more balls than a pre-schooler at a bowling alley. The tasks that were still on my shoulders for this summer—gently suggesting productive, daily activities, organizing and executing college visits, signing up the guys for enriching teen-centric classes—may or may not have happened by press time. Hopefully, I hit the 10 percent mark. If I didn’t, oh well. I’ll know at least my family earned an A+ in “Pillow Case Design with Drool!” Sleep. That’s what summer’s really all about. Right?
