Lifestyle Letter

Autumn is Upon Us! A

utumn always brings thoughts of the glorious panorama of leaves that have turned bright yellow, orange and red! Please indulge me–I'm from the Mid-West, where taking in the beauty of autumn was always a highlight. That's why I have that dynamic on the cover. However, October in California is time to celebrate wine harvests (see our feature on "The Best of Napa"), Oktoberfest and Halloween. We are also taking the time to honor the philanthropists in our midst. Angelitos de Oro, a 55-year old women's support group for Big Brothers Big Sisters that originated in Newport Beach, is celebrating its 15th annual Angelitos Card Week, where, by purchasing a card, you are treated to 20% savings in more than 120 South Coast Plaza select stores. The 70-member group has given BBBS nearly $6 million over the years to help its mentorship program for young people. Also of note is UC Irvine biology student Lydia Natoolo, who has created a nonprofit called Love A Community that is committed to improving the living conditions in rural Uganda, her native country. Newport Beach resident Paul McDonald, best known as a star USC quarterback and for his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys, started his philanthropic work in Cleveland when he formed "Paul's Pals," an organization that aided hematology/oncology patients at Cleveland Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. Today, he supports local charities, in particular, Kure It Cancer Research. He co-founded Rivals (referring to USC/UCLA football) United for a Kure, a support group for Kure It that raises money for underfunded cancers. Then, there is the couple on the other end of the philanthropic spectrum–Joe and Mechelle Lawrence Adams. They head two major nonprofits in the county: Joe, for Discovery Cube Orange County and Los Angeles, and Mechelle, for Mission San Juan Capistrano. They are a team, in that they daily share at morning coffee support ideas and feedback about their respective nonprofit work. You'll enjoy the story on Laguna Beach glassblower John Barber's 46-year career. His commissioned chandelier work is breathtaking, and, even more so, is the 27-foot mural in cast glass called "Eternal Sunset" at Montage Resort. The Perfect Pumpkin Halloween Treats featured in Culinary Creations will make your mouth water, and the ginger tomcat lying on the computer keyboard in Parting Thoughts will bring a smile. I have a ginger tomcat who looks just like him! In closing, enjoy your October! Take a drive up the coast to Napa for some great wine tastings, purchase an Angelitos Card to satisfy your shopping cravings and help a charity or bake those yummy Halloween treats. Until next time, Donna Bunce, Editor DBunce@LifestylePubs.com

Natoolo shaking hands with the district health officer of Kumi District, Uganda, about the solar panel collaboration

CHANGING LIVES ARTICLE ANA LAUNES

L

ydia Natoolo, past President of the Honor Students at Saddleback College and currently a Biology student at UC Irvine, is a driven student aspiring to become a pediatrician with the intention to give back to the communities that saw her grow. Lydia was born in Lusaze, Uganda, the youngest of 28 children living in poverty with no access to close drinking water, food, electricity or education. She grew up as a witness to the everyday struggles of survival that made her who she is today–a young, strongly-motivated individual with a clear focus in giving back and making a difference in her community. Since her arrival in the U.S. in 1999, Lydia has volunteered with various organizations, such as Invisible Children, Resolve, and Mariners Church, and she has lobbied on Capitol Hill to raise awareness for her cause. 18

at a Time

Today, Lydia is the head of Love a Community, a non-profit organization born from her vision to bring hope and help for rural Ugandan villages to achieve sustainability. The main focus of the organization is to support community hospitals in Uganda by providing funds for medical supplies, electricity, clean water and irrigation systems. Uganda has a total population of 40 million people, out of which 8.4 million lack access to safe water. In addition, poverty is rampant with 63% of its total population living on less than $2 per day. In Uganda, water is not easily accessible and represents a severe problem. Furthermore, the country relies on wood for fuel, which accelerates deforestation, land degradation and ill health from indoor pollution. Access to new renewable sources of

energy could improve not only the levels of productivity, but will allow for the construction of pumps to extract drinkable water from aquifers and the implementation of irrigation systems for agriculture. The result of these improvements will translate into an increase of the country’s life expectancy, which is today 58 years old (World Bank data). According to a study conducted in 2014 by the Uganda Ministry of Health, the Makerere College of Health Sciences and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in the eastern region of Uganda, the country’s population has 16.7% with sickle cell, 56% with malaria and 70% with some sort of anemia. The region of Kumi is home to 400,000 people. Atutur Hospital, located five miles outside Kumi, is the central focus of Love A Community. The hospital, built in 1969, is

currently operating under extreme conditions with no clean water supply until very recently, rationed electricity supply and a shortage of bed spaces. Originally, the hospital was designed to accommodate 100 patients and today serves more than 450 daily. Its optimal performance requires 72 nurses and 10 doctors, but lack of resources forces them to operate with 39 nurses and only three doctors. In the unplanned urban settlements around Kumi, residents pay up to three times more for safe tap water than residents living in planned urban communities. As a result, residents collect water from alternate contaminated sources. This causes frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases, such as cholera and dysentery. To prevent these major issues, Love A Community is continuously raising funds. So far, the organization has provided Ututur Hospital with a water pump that delivers clean drinkable water. In addition, and to mitigate the negative impact of the three-to-four-days of no electricity supply per week, the organization has provided some solar panels. Now, with a continuous energy supply, Ututur personnel can be more precise conducting deliveries or in the administration of IVs and injections. Since the intervention of Love A Community and the implementation of all these projects, Ututur Hospital has experienced a reduction of sepsis cases per month from 34 to 14, and, more importantly, a total mortality rate reduction from 13.78% to 7.5%. Love A Community’s ultimate goal is to improve the living conditions of rural Uganda by implementing positive and sustainable changes in the community and replicating the model, village to village, until covering the entire territory. Fundraising efforts have a direct and quick impact on the communities they serve. This year, the organization needs to raise a total of $50,000 for the construction of a water system, solar panels, an irrigation and farming system, and a sickle cell clinic. If you are passionate and motivated to give back and help these communities, please contact Lydia Natoolo at 949- 201-0311 or email her at Lydia@LoveACommunity.org. October 2016 | Newport Beach Lifestyle

However, the dough for the pizzas and pastas are made with care and prepared in-house. “For the pizza, we use the Italian caputo flour, which is so superior,” says Colville. The chewy albeit crispy crust creates a nice base for traditional flavors, such as the vibrant pesto dabbed with creamy ricotta and chewy mozzarella. hen visiting California, for most, taking a trip to experience the beauty

(and wine) of Napa Valley is one of the most desired things to do. Even for people living in California, visiting Napa is a treat. The region is famous for its superb wines, and visitors can’t help but get caught up in the moment of going from tasting room to tasting room. With so many different options of

2. Round Pond Estate

This state-of-the-art winery was completed in

2007 in an effort by the winemaker to be able to control every step of the winemaking process and to ensure consistent wines with each new vintage. Located on the Rutherford estate, the winery is surrounded by vineyards. Before you drive down the long stretch of straight road to get to the tasting room, pull over and snap an epic photo, as the driveway is stunning. Their cutting-edge approach includes hand-sorting the grapes twice, and fermenting and aging specific vineyard blocks individually to maintain their distinctive character. To further ensure quality, this time and labor-intensive approach benefits from the use of select technologies, such as the winery’s custom-built fermentors, which continuously regulate temperatures to the ideal level.

Canadian-born

Bordeaux

enthusiast,

Cliff Lede, purchased a sixty-acre estate in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Lede decided to name each vineyard block after some of his favorite rock songs and albums, which led to what is known today as the Cliff Lede Vineyards “Rock Blocks.” The 25,000 square foot winery and cave system has a beautiful tasting room open to the public, but we recommend booking their “backstage” experience, as it’s more intimate and you are provided with a more VIP experience. In 2015, Cliff Lede Vineyards achieved both Napa Green Land and Napa Green Winery certification.

4. Clif Family Winery

4. Clif Family winery We have all heard of Clif bars and products, but healthy snacks aren’t the only venture for this family. Clif Family Winery is a combination of passions for cycling, wine and food. At Velo Vino, you can taste Clif Family Wines, enjoy a snack or an espresso drink, and embark on a world-class cycling excursion, all in the heart of Napa Valley. But the highlight here is the Clif Family Bruschett eria food truck which features a Northern Italian inspired menu of bruschetta, spiedini, salads, rotisserie chicken and sweet treats that make pairings so much more fun (and filling).

5. Pope Valley Winery The Pope Valley Winery was founded in 1897 and a century later, in 1997, the Eakle family purchased the historic winery and gave it a new life. In 2009, the next generation of Eakles stepped in to continue the legacy and, currently, siblings David Eakle (winemaker) and Diana Eakle Hawkins (general manager) are keeping the tradition alive while bringing the winery to the next level. This place is a bit of a drive out from the rest of the wineries in Napa, but the picturesque drive is well worth the time once you arrive at the winery, which seems to be frozen in time, with the original farmhouse still gracing the property. This is the authentic Napa experience, and if you’ve ever dreamt of knowing what a visit to Napa used to be like, a visit here will help bring that dream to fruition.

6. Mumm Napa This is just one of those can’t miss stops when in Napa. The lines can be long and the wait can be frustrating, but once you have your seat, sit back and enjoy the bubbly. Mumm Napa’s roots can be traced back to GH Mumm, the leading international champagne brand in France, which was established in California in the late 1970’s. Their sparkling wines have been rewarded with accolades and awards over the decades and after a tasting here, you’ll understand why. Pro tip: don’t miss out on the Cuvée M Red, because if you’ve never had a sparkling red before, this is the one to have.

7. Cakebread Cellars Founded in 1973, Cakebread Cellars has remained famous for its gracious hospitality. Tastings here are led by really fun staff, all who make you not only feel welcomed but generally are interested in helping guests learn more about their wines and wine in general. With 40 harvests under their belts, the once little winery is now being run by the second generation of winemaking Cakebreads and has become one of the most successful and respected wineries in Napa.  28

MASTER

GLASSBLOWER Barber’s jellyfish chandelier at the Sawdust Art Festival

John Barber /// WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO LAGUNA BEACH AND WHEN WAS IT?

Laguna Beach residents Steve and Meressia Robbins’ commissioned chandelier

In 1976, I had a glass studio in Santa Monica. I had been blowing glass for six years and was starting to see some success. My mother moved to Laguna Beach, where I would visit her often. The main attraction to me was not only the beauty of the coastline but the community of artists and the summer venues and art shows that ran all summer. In 1977, I moved to Laguna and built my glass blowing studio in Laguna Canyon. My first Sawdust Art Festival and Festival of Arts was that year. /// DESCRIBE YOUR ART.

Glass blowing dates back to the Iron Age in 1500 BC. Barber’s custom piece of art glass, created annually for honorees at the National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon 38

Newport Beach Lifestyle | October 2016

Its long history has always fascinated me. Much of the work has survived for 3000 years and is just as beautiful today as the day it was made. I apprenticed in Bavaria Germany under glass artist Erwin Eisch. This allowed me time to develop my skill without the enormous expense

of maintaining a studio. In Europe, there is a 20-year apprenticeship necessary to perhaps reach master status. There are no short cuts. This is now my 45th year blowing glass, and I am creating the works I’ve always dreamed of. /// WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

In the beginning of my career, I found a collector base that collected the Art Noveau glass of Tiffany and Steuben. I spent 20 years after moving to Laguna Beach developing my skill in designing and creating the luster glass and highly decorated pieces popular during the turn of the century. I started to become inspired by sea form creatures and local landscapes. /// WHERE DID YOU STUDY GLASSBLOWING?

In 1970, there was little opportunity to learn glassblowing in the U.S. When I was 19 years old, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I decided to travel to Europe and visit my older sister who lived in Munich, Germany. Her German husband was raised in a Bavarian Village near the Czech border. The area had been blowing glass for 1200 years. We visited my brother-in-law’s family home in the small village of Fraunau. The village had three glass factories, one of which was owned by a family friend. I toured the factory and saw glass blowing for the first time. I remember the moment I said I could do this. What a challenge! I asked Erwin Eisch, the owner, glass designer and artist, if there would be any way I could stay and learn. He gave me my first workbench. I spent two years there learning the trade and honing my skills. While there, I met the fathers of the studio glass movement, Dale Chihuly and Harvey Littleton. I returned to the U.S. in 1973 and started blowing glass at UCLA in their newly-opened glass studio. I stayed for one semester and decided that I knew more about glass then they did and really needed my own studio. I built my first studio in Santa Monica with three other glassblowers to share the expense. /// WHERE CAN PEOPLE VIEW YOUR WORK?

I have five public art locations here in Laguna Beach. The most popular are the two locations at the Montage Resort. There is a 27-foot mural in cast glass called “Eternal Sunset” and two bronze and glass lanterns at the entrance of Montage. My home studio and showroom in Laguna Beach is really the place to view my work and see a glassblowing demonstration. During July and August, I am demonstrating and exhibiting at the Sawdust Art Festival, Booth 100. Most recently, I’ve been accepting commissions for chandeliers. At the Laguna Sawdust Art Festival, I’m featuring a 6-foot jellyfish chandelier. Probably the most exciting thing that happened in my career was the invitation to submit a design concept for the Montage entry. It was my first public art location and resulted in a $125,000 commission. JOHN BARBER GLASS DESIGNS

ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT A LL WITH TEETH Any of us who are parents remember the excitement and the steep learning curve associated with the birth of a child. It is not uncommon to search for a pediatrician as soon as you know you are pregnant.

Likewise, some parents don’t know when to transition the child from the pediatric office to the general dental office. We have had some parents bring their high schooler to our office for the first time just before they leave for college.

In the first few years of a child’s life the parent looks to the pediatrician to monitor growth and development, to make sure the appropriate preventive care is scheduled and to answer concerns about habits or behaviors and their consequences.

Once a child has all their permanent teeth, which occurs for most at about age 13, there are distinct advantages to having your child come to our office. We can provide a comprehensive exam which evaluates potential problems like TMJ instability, bite issues, destructive habits (clenching and grinding) and the early signs of periodontal disease and is not just focused on finding decay (cavities).

I have never met a parent who just assumed they would take their little one to the same physician they were seeing and most likely they didn’t ask for advice about hypertension, cholesterol and osteoporosis from their pediatrician. When it comes to dental care, the same thinking does not always apply. Parents frequently ask us if we see children when the child they have in mind is only four years old or even younger. It is not well known that the growth and development of the human jaws, the eruption of the deciduous (baby) teeth, the need for early stage orthodontic treatment and the normal sequence of the loss and replacement of the baby teeth with their permanent successors are all aspects of a child’s dental care that pediatric dentists (pedodontists) know most about.

We employ Registered Dental Hygienists, who are highly skilled in thorough scaling and prophylaxis (adult teeth cleaning). Some of the young patients that transition over in their older teen years are found to have early stages of periodontal disease. Hygienists are rarely found in pediatric dental offices. Most teenagers think they are all grown up anyway. Help them make the timely transition to the “grown up” dentist. Bring them to our office before they start talking about the prom.

Special Gift to every New Patient Teen ages 12-19 that schedules and visits our office in the month of October.

hat began in 1961 as a suggestion by Big Brothers of Orange County board member Robert Guggenheim, when he asked Mrs. Spencer T. Honig and several of her friends to form an auxiliary in support of the organization, spawned a support group called Angelitos de Oro (“Golden Angels”). Fifty-five years later, the group is still going strong, having contributed nearly $6 million to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County (girls were added later) of Orange County and the Inland Empire. Early on, the founding group decided that membership would be limited to 55

(today it is 70) women so they could meet in each other’s homes and that their major means of fundraising would be a book featuring a calendar and advertisements from local merchants called “The Gold Book.” Each year, when the book was published, a formal dinner dance was held to celebrate the book’s completion. By 1986, the 25th anniversary of Angelitos de Oro, the dinner dance was retired and the era of the gala fashion show begun. Held in a large tent adjacent to the upscale Amen Wardy store in Fashion Island, the sold-out events drew 600 guests

with noted designers, such as Oscar de la Renta, Bob Mackie, Carolina Herrera and Bill Blass, making appearances. A speaker’s series replaced the fashion extravaganza in the early 1990s and featured standouts like Barbara Bush, William Bennett, Larry King and Governor Mario Cuomo. Finally, after 35 years, the group’s signature Gold Book was retired. In 2000, a new fundraising idea was presented to the group by Angelitos member Trish O’Donnell, who heard that a group in Dallas was selling a shopping card and raising lots of money for charity.

“Our membership voted to do the project and call it the Angelitos Card,” current Angelitos del Oro President Sherry Bilbeisi shares. The first Angelitos Card effort was held at Fashion Island and when requests for a second year were non-responsive, the group turned to South Coast Plaza. That year’s co-chair Laraine Eggleston said she and chair Mary Anna Jeppe met with South Coast Plaza Managing Partner Anton Segerstrom and Marketing VP Debra Gunn Downing for approval. The idea was to sell Angelitos Cards to the public for five days of shopping with 20% discounts at a number of South Coast Plaza stores. Past President Kate Eastman, who chaired the Angelitos Card event in 2005, remembers the impact. “It was the beginning of tying shopping with a charitable cause, and our membership morphed, drawing younger members and making a name for our group in the community,” she says. Eggleston, also a past president and chair of the group’s second Angelitos Card, further explains that she and co-chair Bonnie McClellan, along with Carolyn Garrett, created a new fundraising entity to raise additional income to meet the group’s desired donation to BBBS. Thus, Golden Angels was born to encourage the group’s Sustainer members to contribute. “It has since grown exponentially to include many Active member donors, as well as corporate sponsors,” Eggleston says. The effort now encompasses seven days of shopping and a special Preview Day, which invites those who purchase cards to enjoy a special fashion show at South Coast Plaza. Bilbeisi credits South Coast Plaza’s support for the card’s success. “They have maintained our relationship over the years, allowing us to meet and exceed our expected donations to BBBS,” she says. At the heart of the effort is the women’s belief in the importance of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mission in helping young people. The money Angelitos raises helps fund the High School “Bigs” Program, whereby high school students (“Bigs”) are paired with elementary school students (“Littles”) in a mentorship capacity. Nearly 40 schools are served. BBBS Orange County CEO Melissa Beck sums up the Angelitos impact. “Partnerships such as this one make it possible for us to serve more than 3,000 children annually through programs that improve the odds of youth performing better in school and avoiding violence and illegal activities.”

Parting Thoughts

Of Relationships & Herding Cats WORDS NICOLETTE TOUSSAINT

M

any parents get pets for their kids to teach them about the care that goes into building a relationship. That's probably why, when I was two, my mother got me a black puppy that I named “Bow Wow.” All her life, my mom laughed about the neighbors’ reactions when she would lean out the back door and call, "Bow Wow! Bow Wow!” After Bow Wow was killed by a car, my father said, “no more pets.” I first subverted that edict by keeping horned toads (mostly) in my sock drawer. Somehow, my little Godzilla escaped several times. The last time, I was searching for it when I heard a scream from the living room where my mom was being interviewed. A white-gloved lady who had come to take the census accidently found my horned toad–it was hanging by its tiny toenails, clinging to a coarsely-spun fabric lampshade, just inches from her face. That incident outed Godzilla, and I had to let him (or her?) go in the garden. After that, I befriended a neighbor’s orange-striped tomcat, who would come to visit when my brother and I built blanket tents in our yard. I called him “Puss.” (I had a way with names!) Truthfully, I wasn’t too successful in bonding with the horned toads. But since Puss, who got smuggled into my room many times, I have had a dynasty of ginger tomcats. The ninth and current one— the one sitting on my keyboard—is called Apricat. Woden was the sixth. I trained him to fetch paper balls, to play ping-pong with balled-up socks, and, at night, if I snapped my fingers, he would run down the hall and curl up on the foot of my bed.

50

Newport Beach Lifestyle | October 2016

Woden was deeply intuitive. No matter what time I came home, he’d be waiting, his little, striped face peering out the window. I wondered if he could recognize my footsteps. If I was upset, he’d sit on my lap, purr and bump noses in that feline love gesture called bunting. Woden saw me through interstate moves, divorces, injuries and heartbreak, proving far more constant than some of the human tomcats who shared my living quarters. Woden and I were deeply, wordlessly bonded. About three years into Woden’s life, I left him with friends while I traveled in Europe. When I returned six months later, I wasn’t sure if he’d remember me. For the first two days, Woden sat near me, just out of reach, frostily turning his back to me. On day three, he turned and glared at me—almost all day. But, that evening, as I was getting ready for bed, on a whim, I gave Woden the snapping-fingers command. He sprinted down the hall, jumped up on the foot of my friends’ guest bed and began to purr! I was dumbfounded. It was the same command and the same cat – but a different bed, a different house and a different year on the calendar! Mom was right. I have learned a lot about relationships–both human and animal–from living with cats. For example: • Live in the moment • Don’t hold grudges • Learn to give and take, Compared to dogs, cats aren’t all that eager to please; no cat would pull a sled through the snow just to win points with a human! To befriend a cat, you have to sometimes accept his timing and interests. That's not a bad idea with people, either. • Cuddling helps–sometimes a wordless touch is just what’s needed. • You can’t command love. You just have to be there, offer your heart and let it come. Anything else is just herding cats.
