Welcome 2016!

JANUARY 2016 publisher

I

can't believe another year has begun. I always look forward to new beginnings, and here we are, looking at 2016. I don't know about you, but I usually make a few New Year's resolutions. It seems the right thing to do when the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, the Waterford Crystal Ball drops in New York's Times Square and my husband and I clink our glasses of champagne in greeting a new year.

This issue features a few articles that might be of interest to you, depending on your resolutions for the New Year. Wellness is on a lot of people's minds, and The Breakers in Palm Beach has a new program they have implemented, with a wellness coach, et al. So, if you'd like to take a flight to Florida–it's perfect this time of year–and be energized and challenged to create a healthier you, read Andrea Poe's story. And, don't miss Zara Cerni's suggestions for 'Living Long~Looking Good.' It never hurts to be reminded how important it is to eat a balanced diet, exercise, drink lots of water, sleep well and, for women, renewal treatments! If you're into cleaning up the clutter, you must read Parting Thoughts and Lisa Cooke Harrison's treatise on the "Great Purge & Clean of 2016." And, speaking of cleaning, don't we all have a closet or two that is in need of some serious attention. Our article on ClosetAuctions is a revelation. It involves trading items from our closets for points, and those points can be used in an 'auction' for products and services. Interesting, isn't it?

SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE The year was 1940, when 12 Newport Beach women formed the Assistance League of Newport-Mesa to make a difference in their community by improving the lives of children. Today, ALNM is one among 120 chapters nationwide making a difference through its four philanthropic programs: Cheri Harris Dental Center, Community Outreach Program, Kids on the Block and Operation School Bell. The programs are completely self-funded and run and manned by more than 300 adults and nearly 100 teen member volunteers. A gathering of current and past members, including many past presidents, and community partners celebrated the league’s 75th Anniversary in grand style. Kudos to a committed group making a difference in the lives of children!

Imagine You...

Living Long, Looking Good 18

Newport Beach Lifestyle | January 2016

e are entering an era of unprecedented breakthroughs in our approach to wellness, prevention of disease and the aging process. Geneticists postulate our gene coding may be responsible for only 30% of our lifespan. That leaves 70% up to us. Genetic engineering is becoming mainstream. There are well-funded startup companies whose primary mission is to cure the aging process. Individuals may not be able to tap into those resources just yet, but those days are coming! Until then, there are measures we can take to optimize our chances to be the best we can be, inside and out. Why do we age? Why do muscles weaken and memories fail while our skin withers? Apoptosis, programmed cellular death, contributes to disease and aging. So, how do we prevent this from happening or put the breaks on…at least for a while. Let’s cut through the noise and stroll the path of imagine you… Imagine you…could take a drug that can slow the aging process? There is such a drug–it’s food. Hippocrates, the father of medicine said, “Let thy food be thy medicine.” Those words ring as true today as they did millennia ago. Studies have shown that a balanced diet consisting of low glycemic carbohydrates, adequate lean protein and healthy fats can stabilize blood sugar and reduce systemic inflammation. This approach helps to maintain a healthy blood sugar level, which translates into reduced cellular inflammation, better mental acuity, happier mood and better performance. 1 Divide your plate into 3 sections. 2 Fill one third with lean protein the size and thickness of the palm of your hand; fill the remainder with colorful vegetables, a little fruit and use monounsaturated fats as a condiment. 3 Enjoy life in The Zone. Imagine you…could look as good as your younger self. You can, with renewal treatments to replace volume time slowly steals away. As we age, lines, wrinkles and hollows become more evident. that rob us of our youthful appearance include sun exposure, life style choices and genetics. Neuromodulators erase lines and wrinkles, and the FDA has approved dermal fillers for almost every area of the face and hands. Pharmaceutical companies continue their research to quench the thirst of the aging baby boomer generation. Imagine you…could keep your joints supple and muscles strong. You can, just keep moving. We loose limb strength up to 10% a decade after the age of 50. Nerve connection to muscle fibers weaken, as do the neurons to your brain. A brisk daily walk will have a big impact–it helps control weight, lower bad cholesterol and blood pressure. Engaging in daily cardio respiratory activities eases the symptoms of depression and delays dementia. Resistance training, to ensure bone, muscle and joint health, is as important as cardio. Don’t belong to a gym–no excuse. Push-ups and standing squats are great resistance exercises you can do at home or as you travel. Imagine you…sleeping well each night. Exercise and diet are very important to keep our circadian rhythms in balance. There is one simple thing proven to help with weight loss and sound sleep–water. It is hard to believe that 70% of Americans need better hydration. Simple rule to keep hydrated–your body weight divided by 2 equals the minimum ounces of water required daily. If you weigh 150 pounds, your water intake should be 75 ounces per day. If you drink coffee or alcohol, add at least 2 more cups to your water intake. Imagine you… can take an elixir of health everyday. Long chain omega-3 fatty acids and a spectrum of polyphenols (colorful fruits and vegetables) is critical to combat cellular inflammation. Not all omega-3 and polyphenols are created equal. Since fish are at the top of the marine food chain, all of them are contaminated by PCBs. Many manufacturers of omega-3 fatty acid products use either hexane or acetone to isolate their products. If you take fish oil, and everyone should, visit the International Fish Oil Standards (IFSO) online site, an independent lab where manufactures submit their products for testing. 20

hat do you get when you mix five top chefs, a Spanish wine importer, a first rate band, a red carpet, beautiful jewelry, a worthy cause, a jazz saxophone player, an $8 million home with a killer view, a community-inspired magazine and 300 guests? You probably guessed it…a Rockin’ Party! The weather was a perfectly clear 68 degrees on Friday evening, November 6, when Newport Beach Lifestyle magazine celebrated its Second Year Anniversary with a black tie/red carpet event at a beautiful private estate overlooking Newport Bay. Guests arrived to photos on the red carpet and then stepped into a courtyard with a black-bottom pool, complete with a calming waterfall, and live jazz saxophone music provided by Vaughn Fahie. They were greeted with tray-passed hors d’oeuvres provided by Chef David Martin of The Pacific Club, which included his soy braised short rib with Chinese mustard aioli, pickled vegetable slaw and kohlrabi puree; Caledonia blue prawn with persimmon, micro cilantro, almonds, Harissa vinaigrette and sesame tulle; and zucchini roll with apple, jicama, carrot, walnut-Boursin spread and tamarind. Guests were treated to a private boutique by Susan Shieldkret, the owner of The Passionate Collector, showcasing jewelry, handbags, men’s watches, and accessories. As they walked into the main house, on the right were exquisite desserts crafted by Elyssa Fournier of Mixed Bakery. Her homemade caramel mou, chocolate saucisson with chocolate, nuts, raisins and more,

and bourbon pecan cookies were a perfect match for the cavas being served at the bars. John Cancilla, his wife Ana, and their crew from Obac Imports were serving 93+ Parker point Clos de L’Obac wines from winemaker Carles Pastrana, one of the founding fathers of the Priorat region in Spain. Agusti Torello Mata cavas were also being offered at the tasting bar. Clos de L’Obac winery is a must-see if you are traveling to Spain on one of your upcoming vacations. The massive 14-foot main dining table was filled with delectable canapes from Chef Rachel Haggstrom and the Balboa Bay Resort. Beef tartar with knackebrod, chive flower and egg cous cous; truffle cannoli with truffle cheese and truffle tuille; Cobia sashimi with forbidden rice cracker, avocado, sriracha caviar and yuzu; and bone marrow with bone marrow condiment, tomato confit and parmesan sable, were all displayed beautifully for guests. The other half of the table was filled with pumpkin pie and chocolate mocha dessert shooters tastefully displayed and provided by Armen Karamardian and Zov’s Bistro. Bill Bracken, formerly the executive chef at the Four Seasons/ Island Hotel in Newport Beach, and his team served grilled New Zealand lamb chops with roasted red bell peppers, and empanadas from the wood burning tandoori oven located on the lower patio. Award-winning and nationally-recognized jeweler Todd Reed and his crew were across the way showcasing some of Todd’s beautifully custom-designed pieces. CONTINUED >

Some of the items donated for the auction included a stay at the beautiful Belmond El Encanto resort in Santa Barbara, a chef ’s dinner in the private dining room at the Waterline Restaurant at the Balboa Bay Resort, and dinner for eight at The Pacific Club. Newport Beach Lifestyle magazine feels honored to have been able to help raise over $4,000 that evening, which translates into 4,000 meals for those in need. The event was made possible through the participation of many sponsors, and Newport Beach Lifestyle magazine would like to thank them all, including Classic Party Rentals, The Passionate Collector, Obac Imports and Clos de L’Obac Winery, Tim Smith Group and Coldwell Banker Real Estate, The Pacific Club, Balboa Bay Resort, Zov’s Bistro, Baked Goods, Dr. Peter T. Smrecek, Partners Direct Insurance, and The Appearance Center. Special thanks also to Paul and Raffy Lunsford for the use of their beautiful home as the venue, and to Kristin Martin of Table for 10 for her consultation and for coordinating the participation of the chefs. Without Kristin and the chefs, the event would not have been the same. The evening resulted in much laughing and smiling, lots of hugs, tons of photo ops, exquisite wine tasting, delectable bites, amazing music, and, most importantly, a celebration of Newport Beach Lifestyle magazine and the community it serves. Departing guests commented on looking forward to next year’s evening of celebration.

New Year’s

Resolutions The Breakers Palm Beach offers the perfect recipe for wellness. ARTICLE ANDREA POE | PHOTOGRAPHY THE BREAKERS PALM BEACH

oo much food. Too much booze. Too many late nights. Overindulgence, the plague of the holidays... all cast a heavy shadow. So, it was with dark circles under my eyes and snug pants that I offered myself up to The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida for some fixing. What better place to surrender? Founded by Henry Morrison Flagler during the Gilded Age, the resort remains the gold standard in one of the toniest enclaves in the country. It was here, amid the glamorous interiors with ceiling frescoes painted by Venetian artists, dramatic marble colonnades and ornate 19th century chandeliers, that I planned on transforming myself. I’d heard The Breakers was serious about wellness, investing in a new ocean-front gym, creating a juice bar, adding healthy options on all the menus, and, best of all, introducing a wellness coach. My goal was to work out twice a day, once at sunrise and once at sunset. I would steer clear of alcohol and dine upon lean protein and vegetables. Despite my very best intentions, within minutes of my arrival, temptation called. I made a beeline to The Seafood Bar for a pint of Native Brewing Company’s lager, crafted in Ft. Lauderdale, and a plate of tuna tartare at the whimsical aquarium bar. Luckily, before indulgence became the theme of this trip, I had an appointment with Ashley Pearson, the wellness coach at The Breakers. 30

Newport Beach Lifestyle | January 2016

If anyone radiates good health, it’s she. We first discussed my concerns: holiday excess combined with too little sleep and too much stress. Ashley guided me through exercises to alleviate stress, each one involving deep breaths, like a yoga cow and cat combo that I could do at my desk and stretching techniques I could do before bed to calm my mind. Guided imagery was next on the menu. I lay down on the massage table and closed my eyes, while Ashley whispered prompts that calmed me so much I had to be revived with a spritzing of peppermint oil. After all this feel-good relaxation, Ashley’s suggested I get a read on the state of my body, courtesy of a machine called InBody 520. It would reveal not just my weight and BMI, but my flab content, the health of my organs (look out Champagne-soaked liver!) and even my water body balance. As she led me to the machine, I tensed up. She prompted me to “breathe, just breathe.” I stepped onto the dreaded InBody 520 and, within minutes–ready or not, my stats were printing out. It turns out that my BMI wasn’t bad, but I had less lean muscle than I’d have liked and I had some serious intercellular water issues. Who knew? Glancing at the data that suggested a weak core, Ashley suggested I start taking Pilates, using the Reformer, the instrument that looks like it could have been used for Medieval torture. I groaned; she smiled.

While at The Breakers, I incorporated Ashley’s suggestions for calming down in general and for ramping up my workout schedule. I ran each morning through downtown Palm Beach, charming and distinctive with its with narrow sidewalks lined with manicured green hedges and terraces that spill over with vibrant flowers. I also walked the beach, took a toning class and logged some time at the gym. And, I managed to scoop up a Lilly Pulitzer skirt at the Lilly boutique on property, because what better place to invest in your Palm Beach-inspired wardrobe than here? I confess, I did indulge in a creamy morning quiche paired with a carafe of coffee at The Circle, a spectacular round dining room crowned with a 30-foot dome enlivened by murals of European landscapes and, later, in the evening, I sipped a vodka cocktail at the retro-hip HMF lounge, where a DJ, armed with a pair of laptops, set the mood with old-school jazz early on before building up to techno as the night progressed. When I told Ashley about my transgressions, she smiled. “Change happens with small steps.” I’m not sure if that gave me license to spend my last night at Flagler Steakhouse, but I’m glad I did. I took a seat on the porch overlooking the golf course and indulged in a couple of glasses of Cotes de Rhone, branzino with romanesco sauce and grilled artichokes paired with a homemade honey-infused green goddess dressing. Walking back to my room, I realized I was relaxed, and I was able to breathe, and breathe deeply. And, didn’t Ashley say breath is the foundation of good health? Now that I’m home, I’ve kick-started Ashley’s plan for me. I drink hot water and lemon in the morning before I brew my coffee. Most days I find 20 minutes to meditate. I stretch often. And, though I haven’t yet swapped out my wine budget for a pilates budget, I haven’t ruled it out. After all, I’m determined to mount the InBody 520 upon my return to The Breakers and see my numbers improve. And, if they haven’t improved by the time I get back to Palm Beach? Well, I can’t think of a more perfect perch to hole up and try again.

aised, by his own admission, in a blue collar upbringing, Bob Olson lost his father at a young age and was raised by a stayat-home mother (who later worked at Lockheed Martin soldering transistor chip boards) and a stepfather, who was a carpenter and taught him to wield a hammer and nails as early as eight years of age. Born in the San Francisco bay area, the family moved a lot. “We moved twice during my freshman year and I attended four high schools,” Olson says. “But as I look back, it made me adjust and taught me how to make friends.” He worked throughout high school with his stepdad, who opened a small remodeling company. His senior year, he worked the graveyard shift at a local furniture manufacturing company, and, after graduating, Olson took a day job as a carpenter through the end of the summer. “My dream was to go to college to become an architect,” he shares. “My parents couldn’t help me financially, so I was on my own.” So, Olson joined the carpenter’s union and tried junior college, but he couldn’t stay awake for classes. Soon, he rallied some of his

34

buddies and made a deal with a general contractor to do framing projects. Unfortunately, around this time, he broke his leg and was out for six months, but that didn’t stop him. On crutches, Olson showed his friends how to frame buildings and homes, and soon they were all making money. In 1979, at age 23, he married his high school sweetheart, Tammy, and they bought a home, with a second home following. That same year, with $35,000 in savings, Olson founded R.D. Olson Construction, with the slogan, “Why move when you can improve.” It set the tone for this entrepreneurial man’s future. The family increased with the birth of Bobby in 1980, followed by Melissa in 1982. It was in 1980 that Olson moved to Danville, where he made a good living doing room additions. In 1981, Olson was introduced to former singer and soon-tobecome congressman Sonny Bono, for whom he built the Italian restaurant Bono in Hollywood. With that boost, R.D. Olson Construction was soon building restaurants across the country–Fuddruckers, Chilie’s and more.

Ten-year-old Bob Olson

“We have now built more than 300 restaurants across the country since we started our business,” Olson says. “Bono’s was the spark to move to Orange County in 1984 to continue building restaurants, like Seafood Broiler and Marie Callenders.” In 1987, Olson’s construction company began renovating and remodeling hotels. Its first contract, with Hyatt Hotels in Hollywood, prompted work up and down the West Coast. Two momentous things occurred during this time that changed Olson’s life forever. He joined YPO (Young Presidents Organization) in 1990. “Joining YPO gave me a sense of what was possible with many members entrepreneurs and leaders of their companies," he explains. "They were also good family people, and I was attracted by that.” The other life-changing event occurred in 1992 because Bob regretted not having a college education. The challenge was that he wanted to attain an MBA, bypassing the undergraduate degree. UCLA and UCI said ‘no,’ but after hearing Olson’s business success story, USC gave him the nod. “The next two years were like being in a candy store,” he shares. “Everything I was learning I was able to implement and make adjustments, and it gave me the confidence for what we were doing.” While Olson was attaining his MBA at USC between 1992-1994, R.D. Olson Construction doubled in size. The amazing thing was that it was during a real estate depression. As the economy started to revive in 1997, Olson knew that new hotel construction would start again, and he felt, with his construction experience and name recognition, he would be successful developing hotels to own. It was in 1997 that he launched R.D. Olson Development to do just that. The rest is history. Starting with building two multilevel hotels in Disneyland and one in Irvine, Olson CONTINUED >

soon connected with Marriott International, and from there, both his construction and development businesses took off. Since 2000, R.D. Olson Development has developed more than $1 billion in hotel assets/development. When other companies were waiting out the great recession of 2008-11, Olson was diligently pursuing hotel sites. Since 2011, the development company has launched 15 hotels in California and Maui, including a 14-story, 250-room flagship Marriott hotel in the Irvine Spectrum shopping center. It will be the first full-service hotel built in South Orange County in nearly 20 years, and is next to a 210-room Courtyard by Marriott that R.D. Olson opened last year. It was no accident that R. D Olson Development was named Marriott Hotel Developer of the Year in 2014. Other exciting projects in the making include the 250-room Pasea Hotel & Spa project at Huntington Beach’s Pacific City, set to open mid2016, and one of Olson’s favorite projects–the Lido House boutique hotel in Newport Beach, being built on the city’s former city hall site. It took three years to clear all the hurdles, including the Coastal Commission’s approval, and is set to break ground March, 2016, with the opening scheduled for summer, 2017. “We are very passionate about this project and want to truly make it special,” Olson says. “Our investors are all from Newport Beach, so it is personal for them as well.” Olson says his inspiration was the family home he built on Balboa Island, with its Nantucket theme. “You will feel like you are in someone’s beautiful, upscale home,” he promises. Olson credits his lovely wife Christyne, who he married in 2003, and with whom he has two children–12-year-old Charlotte and 10-year-old Sutton–with the decorating skills. Their home, which they purchased in 2003 and tore down to rebuild, is always awarded a prize in the Newport Beach Boat Parade’s “Ring of Lights” home decoration competition. Olson credits his business success to having great teams at both R.D. Construction and R.D. Development. “Bill Wihelm, who is president of R.D. Construction, and most of his team have been with the company a minimum of 20 years,” Olson says. “They’ve taken the company to a new level.” And, to that end, Olson’s employees at the construction company own 51m percent of the company. “I’ll keep a piece of it, but they’re buying me out,” he states. “They deserve it.” As to R.D. Development, he says his team is at the top of their respective fields, which allows the company to collaborate and successfully execute projects from start to finish. “My work philosophy, at both companies, is to always be respectful, fair and to reward your people for individual and company success,” Olson says. Is there retirement in the near future for Bob Olson? “I don’t know what retirement looks like,” he says. “I love what I do. It’s not work, and I surround myself with a passionate team of people who are motivated and love what they do, too.” That being said, Olson just bought the Jack in the Box, an end-of-theblock site on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, to build a 17-story hotel. It doesn’t sound like this inspiring, generous, entrepreneurial man is retiring any time soon!

losetAuctions startup Founder and CEO Christine Fleming provides an innovative and economic marketing solution to branding small and medium-sized businesses. According to Christine, the key is to increase exposure and, at the same time, have a healthy control of the marketing expense. Christine came up with the idea after having hosted and produced numerous ‘live’ charity closet auctions for up to 500 guests in the Coachella Valley. The goal was to reduce the level of financial struggles that some medium and small businesses experience by participating in Internet coupon services. ClosetAuctions presently holds monthly sponsored contests as a technique to eventually have brands become a common household name. By March 2016, ClosetAuctions will have launched its interactive membership portion of the website. This will provide subscribers the ability to trade items from their closets for points. These points can then be used in an ‘auction’ for products and services. The retail value of items up for bid range from $25 to more than $200.

THE TEXAS TRANSPLANT, HOPDODDY, REVOLUTIONIZES AN AMERICAN CLASSIC AT FASHION ISLAND ARTICLE JENN TANAKA PHOTOGRAPHY JANE BAUDOUIN

Hopdoddy’s Classic Burger topped with a fried egg

42

Newport Beach Lifestyle | January 2016

S

ome dishes seem deceivingly easy to master. Burgers are at the top of that list. The basic framework of a great burger is simple: a beef patty covered in melted cheese wedged between a fluffy bun. Condiments range from lettuce and tomato to ketchup and mayo. But, many things can go afoul from there. The fare at Hopdoddy, Fashion Island’s newest eatery, takes the basic burger premise and elevates it to the next unctuous level. This is one reason why celebrities such as Jimmy Kimmel and Rachel Ray flock to Hopdoddy for their burger fix. Instead of purchasing ground meat from a supplier, Hopdoddy hires a butcher. The prep station, hidden inside a large walk-in refrigerator that’s slightly visible from the dining room, cranks out freshly ground meats each day–grass-fed beef, Angus beef, bison, lamb, and sushi-grade tuna. Only the finest hormone-and antibiotic-free cuts make the grade. Another point of pride: the buns. Hopdoddy’s resident bakers pull fluffy hot loaves from the oven multiple times each day. The fresh bread comes in a gluten-free version, which has become a standard in most OC restaurants. The day Hopdoddy opened, a girlfriend and fellow food writer joined me for lunch. The dining room was packed. We sat near a window and people-watched as shoppers strolled into Fashion Island on that warm November afternoon. The bar was lined with single diners– some on laptops, others watching the big screen TVs. The interesting thing about this burger joint is that it feels suitable for the guys–men in button-down shirts and ties–but it’s not so testosterone laden that it feels like a sports bar. Possibly, this is due to the restaurant’s origins in Austin, Texas. The city, touted as a hipster haven in the heart of the Lone Star state, is a hotspot for the epicurean set. Southern hospitality shines through at Hopdoddy, from the bubbly attitudes of the wait staff to the gracious service from the regional manager. We started our meal with a Tex-Mex staple: chile con queso. The melted cheese at first reminds us of something served at Angels Stadium. But, I know if this is anything like the real queso you find in Texas, then we’re in for a treat. I was first introduced to this Austin staple, thanks to a few transplant chefs who made their marks in New York and Los Angeles.

Crispy Kennebec French fries seasoned with sea salt and chopped parsely

The tuna burger made with sushi grade fish

The chile con queso at Hopdoddy pairs best with the piping hot Kennebec French fries. Traditionally, tortilla chips are dipped into the gooey cheese, similar to nachos. Here, the fries reign supreme. We barely dented the queso, when a cone of truffle fries appeared at our table. The speckled truffle aioli works well as a dipping sauce. But, once you try it on the Primetime burger–which is also a Rachel Ray favorite–you realize it tastes great on anything savory. The Primetime, made from Texas Akaushi beef, melted Brie, caramelized onions and slathered with that spectacular truffle aioli, reminded us of a dish found at a fine steakhouse. A pile of spicy arugula greens added a nice peppery bite. The Thunderbird chicken sandwich sounds out of place at a burger joint, but the flavors hark back to the restaurant’s Austin roots. Seared Poblano peppers, pico de gallo and chipotle mayonnaise enliven the tender chicken and remind you that this is much more than just a burger spot. The rotating craft beers and thick milk shakes will keep you returning to this cool and casual eatery. Another reason to eat here is to support a good cause. Every time a Goodnight for a Good Cause burger is ordered, the restaurant donates $1 to the Dream Street Foundation in Newport Beach: a charity dedicated to providing free camping programs for kids battling life-threatening diseases. Also, this burger is really tasty. The hickory barbeque Angus beef patty comes with Tillamook cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and spicy sliced Jalapenos. It’s a supercharged barbeque cheeseburger with a heart. Hopdoddy is the place where you can take your food snob girl friend or your seven-year-old nephew. It is where fast casual foods, such as burgers, are elevated to Fashion Island’s fine dining standards. In a nationwide Food & Wine magazine readers’ poll, Hopdoddy garnered the title of a fan favorite burger. With families queuing up for tables and no vacant seats at the bar, it seems that this burger joint already made a few OC fans. appy New Year! Now that you’ve got your fitness and wellness goals firmly in place, it’s time to look closely at the space around you and ask yourself, “Are things looking a little cluttered?” or “Are my closets bursting at the seams?” Why not set a goal to de-clutter and, more importantly, simplify this year? Several years ago, I was inspired by a book called SIMPLE ABUNDANCE to set a goal to clean, sort and rid my home of much of the stuff that was being stored, but rarely (or never) used in spare drawers, closets, cabinets and bookshelves around my home. Finding truth in the idea that ‘we fill the space we have’ meant that my home-sweet-home was filled to the brim. Like many of you, I’m blessed to live in a house with extra closets, an extra bedroom and lots of built-in cabinets and book shelves. I realized in the 12 years we’d lived in our home, we’d filled all of these spaces. It was time to attack them, and I needed a plan. My goal? To get rid of something nearly every day. As I sit and watch television in the evenings, I try to use that time to clean out a drawer or two or a shelf in one of the nearby closets. (Commercials are the perfect time to put things back.) One night I carried all of the plastic shoe boxes that make up our first aid and medicine closet supplies. It’s amazing how many nearly empty bottles of cough syrup and Tums we’d accumulated. An hour later my waste basket was full and I’d easily pitched more than a dozen items, so my goal for that week was met. Once upon a time I thought every bookshelf should be lined with books, so I collected and I kept every book I finished. Now I take pride in half empty bookshelves that provide me with space to show off pretty collectibles and a few framed family photos. My beloved got involved at a different level. He started selling things on Craig’s List and eBay. Suddenly the wood chipper and junior golf clubs in the garage had each brought in fifty dollars. That alone was motivation for him to keep posting. We agreed this method was significantly easier than a garage sale since we both work full-time. Twice a year I go through my son’s closets and dressers. It doesn’t take more than 20 minutes of playing “Keep or toss?” with my growing teens to whittle down their t-shirt collection and get rid of the clothes that no longer fit. Since they seem to come home with a t-shirt a week from one activity or another, it’s easy for them to have 10 favorites and ignore the rest. Do you ever find yourself watching an episode of something on your computer? Use that time to organize and purge from your desk, home office space or kitchen, depending on where your computer lives. The organizational experts all seem to agree–if it isn’t useful, sentimental or beautiful, it might be time to let it go.
