Tuscany’s Villa Lucia

BRISBANE HAS ARRIVED! CELEBRATING GERMANY’S 500-YEAR PURITY LAW

Lifestyle Letter

Ode to Travel

APRIL 2016

D

on't we all love to travel? Whether it's to family and friends in another town or state, or abroad, where we enjoy experiences exposing us to different cultures, it is always invigorating. I remember deciding at age 23 that I wanted to travel to Europe. For a young girl from Indiana who had never been in an airplane or west of Iowa, it was quite the journey. Flying to London and joining a group of 45 other travelers to spend three weeks exploring 13 countries sounds crazy, but it gave me a fabulous overall view of the world. It truly changed my life! Reading about other cultures, whether non-fiction or historical fiction, became my mantra, and I'm still doing it today. Having returned many times, not only to Europe, but to other parts of the world, has given me wonderful memories. Our April issue features travel stories on Tuscany, where Newport Beach residents Lucy and George Luhan bought a 500-year-old abandoned farmhouse 30 years ago, and never looked back. Villa Lucia's B&B has entertained thousands of visitors over the years, many of them from Orange County. Our story on how Germany is celebrating the 500year anniversary of establishing the Germany Purity Law is interesting. The law, which is the oldest, still valid, food safety law in the world, was a ducal decree issued on April 23, 1516. And, our story on Brisbane, Australia, shows how a sleepy little river town has attracted new businesses, tourists and residents to become the place to visit. The Marybelle and Sebastian P. Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University is open, after a rousing gala grand opening on March 19, and is offering a stellar listing of performances. You will also enjoy our restaurant review this month, featuring Vaca, Amar Santana's newly opened Costa Mesa eatery, that has palates enthralled. Having one of Orange County's own on Bravo's Emmy Award-winning television series Top Chef - at this moment he is in the final six! - has been a delight to follow. Go Amar! And speaking of food, our Culinary Creations feature offers some recipes for some healthy movie fare - "Healthy" Whole Wheat Pizza and Skinny Healthy Popcorn. Don't let the "healthy" fool you! In closing, wherever your travels take you, enjoy!

While the Catalan classics, such as the Tortilla Española–a circular omelet dotted with cubes of potatoes, diced onions and peppers–and the pan con tomate channel the quintessential tapas bar experience, the steak at Vaca reigns supreme. The charred 50-day aged beef rib steak comes served medium rare with healthy slabs of buttery fat that melts with each bite. Other cuts, such as the Japanese Kobe rib eye, boneless Strauss grass-fed New York strip and the California Washimi ribeye, boast of chef Santana’s impeccable attention to high quality purveyors sourcing the country’s most coveted hormone and antibiotic free meat. The steaks are the stars of the menu, but the paellas are the ultimate comfort food. The Paella de Carne comes served dotted with crispy pork belly strips, cubes of tender beef cheek, and slices of chorizo and blood sausage. A Vaca interior/ Photo: Sarah King Jamón ibérico Fermin (aged three years and carved to order)/ Photo: Bob Hodson

fork-tender leg of duck confit graces the top with glistening spatters of creamy aioli and finely diced scallions. The only thing missing is the crispy socarrat layer of toasted rice at the bottom of the pan. The unexpected paella dish to order is the Fideuá, comprised of toasted noodles instead of rice. This Catalan classic is a must-try course in Barcelona and should definitely not be missed at Vaca. The dark squid ink colors the noodles with a rich ebony hue that’s speckled with grilled calamari and toasted Spanish Marcona almonds. It’s finished with drizzles of creamy ginger and lime aioli. Since Vaca is Chef Amar Santana’s and Ahmed Labbate’s second culinary endeavor in Orange County, many people were eager to see if they could replicate the magic that they’ve garnered at Laguna’s Broadway by Amar Santana. And, from one local’s review that we overheard at the bar, they seem to be on the right track. The longtime Laguna resident prides himself as one of Santana’s longtime fans. As he ordered cocktails with his companion while they waited for a table, he gleefully said: “I love Broadway. I’ve been going there for years. But, I think this place is better.”

All three locations offered catering services and food-to-go. With the restaurants running smoothly, Lucy began renovating the 15th century farmhouse. “Seeing my absence from my restaurants brought curious friends from Orange County to see what I was doing, which lead to what was supposed to be our family home in Europe becoming the B&B of Tuscany at Villa Lucia,” Lucy says. Before long, Villa Lucia became a popular wedding location for the Luhan’s Orange County friends. The Luhan daughter, Michelle, married Peter Nordberg in 1999, with 150 Orange Countians in attendance among the 250 guests. The wedding service was held in the small, quaint medieval church in Montevettolini, followed by the wedding party walking to Villa Lucia lead by the renowned Montevettolini marching band. “We soon became OC’s most popular Tuscan villa, hosting 2,000 to 3,000 Orange Countians over the years,” Lucy says. With so much to see in the area, Lucy’s B&B guests needed more time to enjoy the art of living Italian style and started requesting the villa for weekly and monthly rentals through the year. However, time has always been set aside in the fall during the olive harvest for cooking classes and the olive oil seminars, along with, when weather permits, truffle hunts with the truffle hounds. Visits to local artisans in the area is always appealing along with a big attraction, especially for the ladies–shopping at popular designer stores, such as Fendi, Versace CONTINUED >

and Gucci, down the hill from the villa in Montecatini, along with the town’s renowned spas. After years restructuring the abandoned farm to provide the necessary amenities and meet the needs of her mainly OC friends, Lucy made it a permanent move in 1994, while her husband, Dr. Jorge E. Luhan, a respected plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Newport Beach, remained behind, joining Lucy in Italy in 2001. When closing What’s Cooking in 2003, the Luhan family was honored with a proclamation from the City of Newport Beach, thanking them for

their many years of serving the public and for “setting the standards for OC’s evolving culinary landscape through their family-run-and-operated neighborhood bistro, the first in OC.” Luciana’s, the remaining family restaurant, managed by their son Jorge, is enjoying its 35th year in business. Catering to such celebrities such as Placido Domingo, Cher, Madonna, Frankie Avalon and David Letterman, the restaurant has a steady stream of Luciana customers making their way to Villa Lucia. The restaurant also sells Lucy’s Madonna dell’ olive extra-virgin olive oil, produced from olives from the farm’s certified organic olive grove, which has been featured on the Today Show. (orders taken at lltuscanyfarm@gmail.com)

Lucy’s experience has lead her to self-publish a book called

“Convivio,” due out this year. “It compares my experience cooking, teaching and enjoying life in the two countries that I love. I feel fortunate and proud to have been born in the greatest, most industrial, country in the world–America. But, when comparing food cultures, I feel fortunate to have Italian

immigrants as parents, who gave me the importance of genuine foods and the daily ritual of time at the family table.” The book, she said, is dedicated to her 102-year-old mother, her loving role model, who taught her the importance of the Mediterranean “diaitan,” referring to a “way of life,” which is just as important to one’s well being as fresh foods and olive oil. Lucy feels her inherited Italian DNA, seeking fun for herself and others, is at the center of her heart and soul, bringing her back for 35 years to life at the table. She feels fortunate to have such a treasure chest of wonderful memories at what her guests refer to as her “magical table.” After 30 years, the Luhans have decided to sell Villa Lucia, either as a family estate, a successful business, or, as many OC guests have suggested, to make it available for fractional ownership. The 15-acre farm is certified organic and licensed as an agriturismo, allowing farm guests to

The law, which is the oldest, still valid, food safety law in the world, was a ducal decree issued on April 23, 1516 by the Bavarian co-rulers Duke Wilhelm IV and Duke Ludwig X. The law was introduced at a meeting of an assembly by the states of Bavaria, and was initially only in feudal Bavaria, but later declared to be the law in all of Germany. The law essentially permitted the government to have the tools to regulate

hops and water may be used, since the existence of yeast had not yet been discovered. The purpose of the law was simply to keep beer “pure” and to keep out cheap ingredients like rushes, roots, mushrooms and animal products. In medieval times, brewers often used such ingredients 30

to raise their profits, subsequently lowering the standards of their beer. Oddly enough though, the word “Reinheit” (purity) didn’t appear anywhere in the original text. It actually started to make an appearance in German legal texts around 1918. Until then, the law was typically referred to as the “surrogate prohibition.” Nowadays, the purity law is part of the German tax code, and states that, in bottom-fermented beers, also known as lagers, brewers may only use those four ever so important ingredients. More specifically, the Odeonsplatz Munich, where a beer festival will be held in July 2016/Photo: Ophelias Culture PR

rule forbids the brewing in Germany of lagers containing spices, corn or rice, sugar, un-malted grains, as well as chemical additives and stabilizers. Now, not all German beers are lagers, and for top-fermented beers, which hold about 10% of the German market, the Reinheitsgebot is a bit more generous in terms of permitted icletradition in Northern Germany, as well as in part to accommodate the centuries old, entirely wheat-based wheat beer brewing tradition in Bavaria. German ales, in addition to the standard four ingredients, may contain “other” malted grains, as well as different forms of sugar, but still no chemicals or other processed compounds. Some would argue that German brewers are purists, or a bit boring, but others would consider them more traditionalists, trying to preserve the quality of their beer. Regardless of which side of the fence you sit on, German lagers are widely acclaimed as the best of

The highlight of the event is the opening of the barrel at the Georgianum, which is one of the most historic buildings in Ingolstadt. From July 22–July 24, 2016, a lavish beer festival will be celebrated right in the city center of Munich. About 100 breweries are expected to present their best beer in the area around the Field Marshals’ Hall and Odeonsplatz. On three stages, a colorful program featuring show and music from traditional Bavarian folk music to international big band sounds will provide great entertainment. O

ne could go around the world from film festival to film festival–from Toronto to Cannes, Berlin or Venice to Honk Kong, and back to the US to Sundance, Tribeca, Nashville, Aspen or Newport Beach. They are world-wide. This year, Newport Beach residents, and many more around the world, will have the chance to enjoy the 17th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival. Although it seems as if it were just yesterday, it was nearly 17 years ago when a group of movie lovers banded together to organize the very first festival. Back then, the festival included nearly 200 films and had around 10,000 attendees. Last year, the festival screened more than 400 films, and hosted more than 54,000 guests, setting a new attendance record. This year, the event runs April 21 through April 28 and has a special program planned that includes several different series: Action Sports, Environmental, Art, Architecture + Design, Music, and Family. In addition, the program includes a Collegiate Showcase, Music Video Showcase, Youth Film Showcase, Film Market, UK Spotlight, and a free Seminar Series. While the Newport Beach Film Festival is considered a predominately local fanfare by most, this year the festival was preceded by a pre-BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) private reception at the Bvlgari Hotel in London. Braced for temperatures in the crisp thirties, the Newport Beach Film Festival crew flew to London for the second consecutive year. That crew, along with its partners Orange County Film Society, Screen International and Visit Newport Beach, California,

38

bestowed two awards in British film: Outstanding Achievement in Global Cinema, and Best Actress. Both of the previously mentioned pre-BAFTA awards were given to Brooklyn’s highly-deserving cast and crew. Saoirse Ronan received Best Actress for her role in the Lionsgate film. Additionally, director James Crowley and screenwriter Nick Hornby graciously accepted the award for Outstanding Achievement in Global Cinema. This pre-BAFTA award would foreshadow an achievement to come later that week, when Brooklyn would go on to win Outstanding British Film at the BAFTAs. Currently, Brooklyn is nominated for three Oscars: Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, and Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay. Other notable attendees at the private reception across the pond included Jared Harris (Mad Men, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), Gregg Schwenk, CEO and co-founder of the Newport Beach Film Festival, and Gary C. Sherwin, CEO and President of Visit Newport Beach. Here at home, the hustle and bustle of preparing the finest, most thrilling film festival to date has locals and film stars alike buzzing with excitement. The Opening Night Gala, hosted by Fashion Island, expects 3,000 guests and will feature culinary tastings from 40 esteemed Southern California restaurants, along with hosted bar and entertainment. Post-parties follow on Friday and Saturday nights and will highlight this year’s most popular films amidst delectable hors d’oeuvres and entertainment. Throughout the week, more than 400 films will be shown at four main venues, including the newly-remodeled Big Newport Theater, the luxurious Island

Cinemas, the family-friendly Triangle 8 Cinemas, and the historic Lido Live Theater. As an exclusive sneak preview of this year’s festival, there are some tantalizing titles, such as After the Reality, which will be making its world premiere. Another notable film, Love is All You Need, inspired by the viral, sensational, award-winning short film of the same name, touts homosexuality as the norm and to be heterosexual to be shunned and ridiculed. In the documentary category, festival-goers will enjoy Orange Sunshine, the never-before-told story of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, or, the "Hippie Mafia of Orange County." The film relays the beginnings of the spiritual group of surfers and hippies, and how these locals became the largest suppliers of LSD during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Additionally, attendees will also be able to view the documentary Fursonas, better known as “Furries,” which features a closely-knit network of people interested in anthropomorphic animals. Functional office space

oday’s office space is more functional and productive and adapts better to the way a human being interacts and socializes. The term, collaborative workspace, has emerged gradually and, today, we can affirm that this new concept allows for the full expression of the human dimension. Through the centuries, we have experienced huge changes in the workspace. These changes responded mainly to three needs– the achievement of greater productivity, the changes in the ways we communicate and more timely access to information. It is amazing how workspace has evolved and adapted throughout history. Beginning in the Middle Ages, the most common form of working space was the scriptorium; a place for total concentration and isolation dedicated to intellectual production. Through the Renaissance, the first introduction of the worktable satisfied the needs of traders for accounting, drafting, contractors, engineers, and artists. In the 19th century, the working space had to incorporate transformational innovations, such as the telephone, typewriter, telegraph and electric lighting. It also had to adapt to the new means of communication, such as the railway, which allowed administrative activities and management of the company being located outside of the production site. One great example of this time is the Larkin Administration building, designed in 1904 by Frank Lloyd Wright. This building was the first designed specifically for an organization that needed to accommodate more than 1,800 workers. Furthermore, the design included some new innovations, such as the rolling chair and walls and furniture acoustic absorbent. In the 1960s, the service economy exploded, along with the development of the computer business. Spaces that were once strictly hierarchical and rigid could now prove to be motivating for employees. The company, Herman Miller, set up the "Action Office Series 1," which included the first offices consisting of panels. This was the first step towards the creation of a work environment that aimed to foster interaction amongst employees. In 1974, Herman Hertzberger conceived the concept of “village worker,” a flexible small workplace for a maximum of 10 people that could be customized by the user. The idea was to provide a feeling of being part of a working community without being lost in the crowd.

The introduction of the Internet has shifted the way we perceive the world and consolidated a brand new paradigm. Today, we have a new generation of workers in need of a pleasant and informal design–a more humanized workspace. The main design trend today is dedicated to foster creativity and collaboration. We find sofas and trees, as well as many more other items that promote interaction and serendipity, in informal openplan spaces for meetings and for socializing. Locally, Ron McElroy, CEO of Real Office Centers (ROC), a passionate expert about the evolution of the workplace, saw the lack of alternative office space in Orange County. His idea is to offer more than just real estate. He believes the offer should include social, monetary and green capital. Living a sustainable life should translate into positive and self-propelling business opportunities. We have evolved from a rational and functional design, where employees were arranged in line and windows were placed above them to promote isolation and concentration, to a leaner design that allows for worker’s mobility, conversation and collaboration. McElroy recognizes the social nature of human beings and believes that social nature needs to be incorporated in the entire scope of our lives. At ROC, socialization is encouraged through different initiatives, such as the sharing of lounge areas, where weekly happy hours include rotating kegs of local brews or where business seminars and events take place, all with the support of a friendly staff. ROC offers collaborative work spaces, private offices, event locations, as well as co-working for companies in their first stages all the way up to Fortune 500 companies. ROC facilitates companies working together by providing advanced technologies and open working spaces and motivates the learning process by providing better workers’ mobility that encourages communication and, consequently, propels growth. ROC Newport Beach can offer different space sizes, both private or collaborative work space, in key locations in the heart of the city; 23 Corporate Plaza Drive, Suites 100/150, 110 & 120 Newport Center Drive, or at 18662 McArthur Blvd, Suite 200. ho wouldn’t love to go to Pebble Beach? Exactly what we thought when we arranged to spend four days in February to celebrate our special friends/clients. We were encamped in a spectacular private home set adjacent to the 14th tee of the gorgeous Pebble Beach Links for the 2016 AT&T Pro Am Tournament.

From early morning through dusk we entertained, fed and had fun with “cliends” (clients who have become friends) who were there by invitation to show our immense gratitude, and frankly love, for those who have entrusted us with their valuable real estate acquisitions and sales. Each day featured a catered buffet for breakfast and lunch, pro golf swing lessons, open bar, wine tasting and cigar sampling winding

down the day with late afternoon hors d’oeuvres as the sun dropped low on the picturesque back drop of one California’s most beautiful coastal views. The Pebble Beach Links is famous for the fantastic scenery and no one was disappointed with the amazing crystal blue skies and unusually sunny days of the four fun-filled golf tournament. The pros, as well as the celebrities proving their medal on the course, were just as spectacular as the scenery, only more entertaining, especially crowd favorite Bill Murray. We love to show our sincere appreciation for the business we have been entrusted with and will always find ways to say thank you— this was just one of those special times for us. 
