ur Men's Issue showcases one of our own, Andrew (Andy, to those who know him) Theodorou, who you might know as executive VP and GM of the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina, but who is featured here as a father. It seemed appropriate to talk about an exceptional dad, since June 19th is Father's Day. Theodorou was very close to his father and credits both his father and mother for his success as a parent (plus his beautiful wife Susan!). Two more fathers are featured in our Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach's Pro/Celebrity Race story–actor/director Ricky Schroder, best known for starring roles in the film The Champ and the sitcom Silver Spoons, and Alfonso Ribeiro, a professional race car driver in his own right and, to many of us, winner of Dancing with the Stars in 2014. And, if there's not enough testosterone flying around, our travel story features the 100th Running of the Indy 500! The "Easy Meals for Men" recipes in our Culinary Creations column continues the men's theme, as does the book review on Walt Hackman, Sr.'s No Problem, Mr. Walt–a Memoir of Loss, Building a Boat, Rebuilding a Life and Discovering China, which details the author's journey building a wooden boat in China following his son's murder. Brothers James "Walkie" Ray and Michael Ray are featured for their love of community through the public art they lovingly display in the Newport area. We also feature a very important milestone in our community–Balboa Island's Centennial, which takes us back to the very beginning with Riverside developer William S. Collins building up an underwater sandbar to create Balboa Island, so he could sell lots for buyers to build homes. He didn't sell enough and bankruptcy ensued, so the original lots reverted to the city to be sold to new owners for between $25 and $50, depending on the location. Considering those bayfront lots are now valued at $3 million and up, that was an unbelievable bargain! Another celebration is upon us–the Third Annual Balboa Yacht Club Wooden Boat Festival. It's not 100 years old, but it is no less important to lovers of wooden boats in the area. After all, our community is home to more than 9,000 pleasure boats for racing and cruising. Don't forget, June is wedding month. We close the magazine in Parting Thoughts with a love-at-first-sight story, which is heartwarming and very funny!

n Saturday, April 21, 1989, as my father opened the doors to our fine art gallery in Old Town Pasadena, he was met by two L.A. County Sheriff’s deputies asking if he had a son named Walter Hackman, Jr. They informed him that my only sibling had been murdered for a mere $50. The tragedy took a toll. My parents divorced, and, as my Dad says, he felt “thoroughly cast adrift.” He decided to revisit a dream: to live on a wooden boat. He knew he wanted his wooden boat to be special. He just didn’t realize how special it would turn out to be. No Problem, Mr. Walt – a Memoir of Loss, Building a Boat, Rebuilding a Life and Discovering China is my dad, Walt Hackman, Sr.’s, captivating memoir about his travels throughout China during the construction of the Mei Wen Ti, a 55-foot, 40-ton, authentic wooden Chinese junk, built in a small shipyard south of Shanghai. The book is not about my brother’s death. Rather, it is a first-person narrative woven around my father’s journey of discovery. It’s about ancient Chinese history and today’s modern China. It’s about understanding the difference between fighting and singing crickets, enjoying daily breakfasts of congee, discovering the Eight Immortals, walking the streets of Shanghai at dawn, Red Flag limousine tours, learning the proper way to eat dim sum (chicken feet

present at the Third Annual Balboa Yacht Club (BYC) Wooden Boat Festival, to be held at the BYC on Saturday, June 4, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. One of approximately 25 shows of its kind in the nation, the BYC Wooden Boat Festival is a free, all-day event dedicated to the unique nature, history and character of all shapes and sizes of wooden boats. Ray Development began a complete renovation of the building, the coastal artwork on the west wall didn't flatter the new modern feel of the property. “We wanted to come up with some treatment of the wall that would distinguish it and would be complementary,” says Walkie. Greg Ashton, a local artist and architect, was

brought on to the project as a design architect. The Rays eventually tasked Ashton with the assignment of developing a sophisticated art installation that would complement the building’s new exterior identity. “I had done a couple of smaller jobs for them, and we had worked together in the past,” Ashton says. “They had a couple different ideas (for the wall), but they were mostly placeholders. Then, Walkie asked me to take a pass on it, and I started working out a proposal for what it looks like today.”

Ashton says the art installation is a reflection of the building’s unique use of light and shadow. “By creating these columns of graphics and then layering and off-setting them, we started to create a more complex visual pattern, which ultimately translated into a low level relief,” Ashton says. “And, with the southwestern exposure, it kind of casts shadows, which creates a lot of depth.” Enriching Orange County’s art culture has always been a personal mission for the Rays. It isn't unusual for the Rays to approach their real estate development projects as blank canvases for public art. In 2012, they commissioned artist Tony Sheets to design an original work on the south wall of Newport Beach’s Corinthian Way retail center, which resulted in the properties beloved three-dimensional evolution of flight installation. “We tend to try to incorporate art as much as we can in our development business,” Michael says. “It’s what my brother and I want to project as a family.” And, they are happy to incorporate art into Corona del Mar’s landscape as well. “Corona del Mar has a history and uniqueness that can’t be matched by any of the planned communities,” Michael says, “It’s a place where you can do special little things like this art piece, and the commu-

n Sunday, May 29th, over Memorial Day weekend, the world’s largest single day sporting event will celebrate its 100th running, with 33 IndyCar drivers competing with 300,000+ attendees watching. The iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway plays host to this massive event, where about 250,000 folks get ticketed seats in the grandstand and the rest head to the Snake Pit, the largest infield party, where typically the young at heart dress in their best Americana garb, drink loads of beer and dance to electronic dance music, this year headlined by Skrillex. The race consists of 200 laps around the 2.5-mile oval at speeds of more than 225mph, and teams can typically make or break the race in the pits, where a good pit stop is about eight seconds to refuel and change all four tires. Some of the more known traditions of the race, which will probably never change, include the winner kissing the Yard of Bricks, which is now the finish line–the oval used to be 3.2 million bricks, but due to safety concerns, asphalt was laid in 1961; however, the finish line was left with the original brick track. The winner of the race always chugs milk at the victory podium, and prior to the start of the race, a balloon release takes place, in addition to a military salute and flyover. Additionally, “Back Home Again in Indiana” is sung and a celebrity is tasked with driving the pace car around the track with the IndyCars behind them in order to set pace. The inaugural race was in 1911, and was won by Ray Harroun driving the Marmon Wasp at 74.6mph. Since the race was not run in 1917-1918, due to WWI, or from 1942-1945 because of WWII, is the reason this year will be the 100th running of the Indy 500. In honor of the historic 100th running, things will be a little bit different this year, and fans have lots to look forward to. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is undergoing a $100 million renovation, set to debut in time for the race, while the town of Speedway (seven minutes from downtown Indy) is also undergoing a $100 million renovation that includes Foyt Winery, a new brewery, veteran IndyCar owner and driver Sarah Fisher’s indoor karting experience, and more. For the first time ever, 100,000 fans attending will receive a 16 oz. commemorative milk jug in order to participate in the world’s largest milk toast. But, beyond the facelifts and fun toasts, this year will be something special for many people. In honor of the 33 drivers who qualify for the race, 33 artists have been commissioned to create iconic “Welcome Race Fans” signs to showcase in May, and 100 vacant homes are being acquired and flipped to help get 100 homeless off the streets. All of this and much more is planned for the 100th running and, even though it’s hard to imagine this event being any more spectacular than it always is, this year will be leaving a lasting legacy.

With a Greek president and a Turkish vice president, there was political turmoil, and violence reigned, so much so that the United Nationals moved in to keep the peace. A few years later, Joe, now in the hospitality business, purchased 1.3 acres of land near the resort town of Famagusta for an estimated $4,000. He had dreams of building a hotel on the land. It was only a block from the Mediterranean, with a huge, arching oak tree a graceful landmark. However, tensions on the island remained high and in 1974, the Greeks launched a coup, overthrowing the ineffectual Cyprus government in seeking reunification with Greece. Turkey responded by invading the island to protect its Turkish minority, and thousands were killed on both sides, with hundreds of thousands displaced. The result was that the Turkish forces never left and a partition was built, called

the Green Line, to keep the warring parties apart. Unfortunately, the resort town of Famagusta and Joe’s 1.3 acres lie on the Turkish side. During the conflict, Andy’s parents decided to send him to Berlin when he was 15 in order to avoid military service in the Greek army (when a young man turned 16, he was conscripted into the army and not able to leave the island). Andy lived in West Berlin with his German grandmother, who refused to speak English and sent him to German language school. His grandmother had been instructed by Joe to make sure his son was educated in the hospitality services, so he could return to Cyprus and build his hotel. That is exactly what she did. Andy received his Hotel & Resort Management Degree from the University of West Berlin in 1975 and spent the next few years in fine resorts in Cyprus, Germany and England before he immigrated to California in 1980 to begin a stint at the Disneyland Hotel as GM of Restaurants. Then, it was on to the Westwood Marquis Hotel (now the W Los Angeles) as executive assistant manager, the Registry Hotel in Irvine (now the Hilton Irvine) as rooms division manager, and the Balboa Bay Club as vice president of resort operations. While at the Registry Hotel in 1983, Andy met his future wife, Susan Fox, and wedding bells followed in 1987. “She was and still is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on,” Andy says. “Susan is a remarkable lady,” he continues. “She is an interior designer, who has a major talent for design. She can dress someone, as well as their house, in a heartbeat.” Susan and Andy welcomed daughter Kristina in 1991 at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. She graduated from Mission Viejo High School, where she was a member of the cheer team. “Our daughter got her fashion sense and beauty from her mother and is an amazing person, both inside and out.” Andy says. The Pro/Celebrity race in Long Beach is responsible for raising $2.3 million of the total amount for the cause. This year’s race was very special, not only because it was the last one, but because 19 of the 21 drivers were former champions. They made the race much more competitive. Participants such as William Fichtner, 2011 winner, Sean Patrick Flanery (1997-1998), Dara Torres (2002), Adam Carolla (20122013), Chris McDonald (2004), Frankie Muniz (2005), and our protagonist Ricky Schroder, one of the early winners (1989), are just a few of the names. In the year 2012, the National Women’s Business Council revealed that the number of women-owned businesses in the U.S. had seen a 26.8% increase over the past five years. California came out on top with the highest number of women-owned businesses. And, finally, perhaps the most surprising fact: nearly nine in ten of these businesses claimed to have just one employee, the owner. The rapid increase of female entrepreneurs within the last decade is undoubtedly a positive step. However, many of these women lack the experience and resources to efficiently manage their business. SCORE Orange County, a nonprofit resource partner of the U. S. Small Business Administration, headquartered in Santa Ana, specializes in fostering small business success and towards that end recently hosted the Fourth Annual Women Business Owners Conference. On the breezy morning of April 14th, more than 200 ambitious women and men alike gathered bright and early at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach. Attendees of the Fourth Annual Women Business Owners Conference grew lively upon networking with new faces, socializing with exhibitors, and, of course, finally feeling the caffeine buzz of their morning coffee. Shortly after settling in, guests had the privilege of hearing welcome remarks from the Mayor of Newport Beach, Diane Dixon. 42

Range Rover Sport SVR Performs like a Sports Car ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

eck-snapping acceleration and cackling exhaust pipes are the first signs that the Range Rover Sport SVR is a performance car dressed in SUV clothes. The snarling 550-horsepower V-8, borrowed from Jaguar F-Type, is capable of propelling this two-and-a-half-ton rig to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds and has a top track speed of 162 mph. The eight-speed automatic is a perfect partner. While the notion of creating a high-performance SUV may seem like a contradiction, it’s the price of admission to the luxury class because BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Jeep all have one. The SVR comes from Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division. It was chosen as Four Wheeler of the Year by Four Wheeler magazine. Land Rover says the SVR completed a lap of the famous Nurburgring Nordschliefe racetrack in 8 minutes and 14 seconds, a time that is competitive with many sports cars. Large Brembo front brakes are installed to cope with the higher speeds. Fuel economy is rated at 14 miles per gallon in the city and 19 on the highway. If you get frisky with the throttle, however, your mileage will be considerably less. The SVR is more than a road burner; it also has off-road chops, although I wonder about the wisdom of taking a vehicle this expensive into the woods or over rocks. Land Rover prides itself on delivering off-road capability on all of its vehicles. An adjustable air suspension enables the vehicle to rise, so it has 10.9 inches of ground clearance and 20 inches of wheel travel. The Terrain Response system lets the driver choose transmission, suspension and traction settings for optimum drivability in a variety of off-road conditions. 48

Settings include Dynamic; Automatic; Rock Crawl; Grass, Gravel and Snow; Mud and Ruts; and Sand. The test vehicle, from Land Rover’s press fleet, was also equipped with lane departure warning, automatic parallel parking and 360-degree parking assist. The Range Rover’s interior is as plush as one would expect for a vehicle in this price segment. The two-tone sports seats have pronounced shoulder bolsters for support during high-speed driving. First-class materials are used throughout. Carbon fiber trim is used as a counterpoint to the leather and brushed aluminum. Knobs are used for the climate control, but navigation and audio are controlled by a touchscreen, and I still find the menu system to be less than intuitive.

The instrument cluster is a 12-inch Thin Film Transistor screen. The gauges are digital representations of analog gauges. The numbers on either side of the tachometer and speedometer needles grow slightly brighter as the needles sweep around each virtual dial. Upscale items included the heated windshield, Meridian audio system, adaptive cruise control, navigation and Bluetooth telephone connectivity. PRICE: The base price of the test vehicle was $112,345. Options included the SVR’s more powerful engine, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, metallic paint, ebony headliner, black roof, carbon fiber veneer, heated windshield and a carbon-fiber engine cover. The sticker price was $127,920. WARRANTY: Four years or 50,000 miles. POINT: The Range Rover Sport SVR has a whopping 550 horsepower and a 162-mph top track speed, yet it is capable of serious offroad activity because the air suspension increases ground clearance and the Terrain Response System has settings for nearly any condition. COUNTERPOINT: High-performance luxury SUVs seem like expensive toys.

ho knew boarding a simple airplane 23 years ago in my blue sweat suit (think ‘80s wear) would change my entire life? Certainly not me, or I might have dressed a bit snappier and put on a smidge of makeup and perfume. But, I had reached that elusive place of peace in my quickly-nearing-explosion biological countdown when I figured if the right guy was to come along, I best relax a bit and calm down. So, calm down I did and donned one of the ugliest outfits I had for sheer comfort. In walks my seatmate for our eight-hour flight and we commence what could be termed as a date–dinner, movie, etc. There were way too many intelligent conversations, laughs and glasses of wine, and the next thing I knew, the sun was coming up on our trans-Atlantic flight and I didn’t want the fun to end. He was returning home to Germany, and I would eventually return home to Kansas City–worlds apart. He called a week later asking if he could come to visit for Christmas in a couple of weeks. “Sure!” I answered, not knowing how many martinis it would take to enlighten my parents of this impending event. So, I commenced, “I am 29 years old, you have trusted me this 54

long, blah, blah, blah.” Their shock equaled my freak-out. I’d known him for eight hours. When I went to the airport–in a much spiffier outfit–I actually wondered if I would recognize the gentleman who had wooed me weeks before. I had already endured all of the “Are you CRAZY?” comments from friends, so I took my chances that he would at least look familiar. Honeymoon is the word we use for those two weeks of Christmas bliss. Without question, we would end up together, so two years of trans-Atlantic, pre-Internet, large phone bill dating ensued. There were some language and culture barriers to overcome, and, fortunately, for my non-German speaking self, he was excited to move to the States. We were married two years after meeting, and immediately moved to California for his engineering job. Now, I have to giggle at people with text and Skype who complain about having to endure long distance relationships from New York to Boston. Love at first sight does happen, and sometimes it comes in a big old jumbo jet of a package. We are ready to celebrate our 22nd anniversary and have two wonderful teenagers. Maybe the blue sweat suit wasn’t such a bad choice after all.
