Let's Travel!

APRIL 2017 PUBLISHER

I

've always enjoyed traveling, whether in the U.S. or abroad. My first experience over the "big pond" (Atlantic Ocean) was a year out of college, when I decided to go to Europe (I have no idea where that came from–I was from Indiana and had never flown on a plane!). So, I flew to London and joined 48 people I had never met before and spent three weeks in eight European countries. It was a hoot and literally changed my life! I took up reading voraciously about European history and have never stopped doing so. Next came three trips to Europe over a 12-year period singing with the Master Chorale of Orange County (later the William Hall Master Chorale) in cathedrals and churches throughout Europe. A riverboat excursion down the Danube through Vienna, Budepest and Prague was informative and engaging, as was a month in Asia visiting eight countries. My husband and I never ate American food the entire time. It was a wonderful experience! And, a trip to Athens, through the Greek Isles and on to Istanbul was a standout. There were other trips as well, with many right here in the good ole USA! I am sure you've had great travel experiences as well. That's why I think you'll enjoy our Travel Issue. Hopefully, we're featuring some places maybe you haven't visited. If a safari is on your "to do" list, you'll surely be interested in considering traveling to Madikwe in South Africa. Yes, South Africa. Jaci's Safari Lodge offers a safari like no other and without all the crowds! Maybe Cuba is on your list, where you will enjoy the juxtaposition of the old and the new, and if you really want something a world apart, visit Dubai. The extravagance is unbridled! April in Newport Beach offers two annual opportunities that always draws crowds. The Newport Beach Film Festival, now in its 18th year, is presenting more than 350 films from April 20 to April 27, with lots of events and parties during that week. Catch the details in "Go Deeper, Go Bigger." Also of note is the 70th anniversary of the Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race April 28–30. Plan on viewing the plethora of boats as they sail south to Mexico from Cliff Drive or Ocean Avenue. It is always an amazing sight! Deirdre Michalski writes about the race's history in Parting Thoughts. Whatever you do this month, take time to smell the flowers and take in the views in Newport Beach, one of the most beautiful places on earth!

ashion Island celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year. The open-air shopping center houses high-end boutiques and department stores. But, the real draw these days are the impressive array of restaurants housed within it. A diner can

easily travel the world without leaving Newport Beach’s borders. A jaunt to Japan with an omakase at Sushi Roku, a taste of Mexico a la Rick Bayless’s Red O, or a frankfurter from the quaint Gourmet

Hot Dog Cart, then return to the states with a burger from Café R&D. Then, there is Fig & Olive–an expansive Mediterraneaninspired restaurant that transports you to Founding Chef Laurent Halasz’s childhood home in the South of France. When Fig & Olive first opened at Fashion Island a few years ago, there was a definite buzz surrounding the space. My husband and I dined at the expansive restaurant several times. The one thing that was immediately apparent was this was the place to be seen. Upon entering the cozy, dimly-lit entryway, you spotted the main bar, and it was packed. In fact, each time we visited,

the bar was always packed with groups of women squeezed

A

trip to South Africa is a dream for most, and, usually, that dream involves the inclusion of a safari. And, why wouldn’t it? An African safari is by far one of the most incredible experiences an adventure traveler can have in their lifetime. Nothing can compare to witnessing

majestic creatures in their natural habitat, where they are free to live the way they were intended to live while those who go to see them are just temporary guests in their wild home. What a majority of travelers headed to South Africa tend to do is book a safari that is based out of Kruger National Park. Kruger is an amazing national park, located in northeastern South Africa. It is one of the biggest and most popular game reserves. The Big 5 (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos) can all be seen there, as well as diverse species of birds, such as vultures,

A World Apart ARTICLE ANDREA POE

Dubai landscape

Dubai offers ultramodern resorts, luxury shopping, international cuisine and a lively nightlife

E

verything you've heard about Dubai's unbridled extravagance is true. Well, at least most of it is. (I’d been told that most taxis I’d hail

would be Mercedes and with luck even Lamborghinis. Turns out, that wasn’t quite true.) However, this city–technically an Emirate–perched on the Persian Gulf is considered the most expensive in the Middle East. It is the flashiest sister of the United Arab Emirates, where the moneyed class from around the globe comes to experience the best and often brashest aspects of modernity.

“Everything you’ve heard about Dubai’s unbridled extravagance is true.”

Atlantis lobby

Emirates towers

I ensconce myself on Dubai’s most famous parcel of land, the manmade Palm Island at Atlantis, a glammedout property that affords access to some of the city’s most unusual experiences. High rollers can book the 10,000-sqauare-foot Royal Suite, where the soap is flecked with solid gold, or the Neptune Suite, where the walls face the aquarium. Mere mortals (like myself ) book spacious rooms with views of the Dubai skyline and the waterfront. You need not be an overnight guest in order to delve into the resort’s activities such as the waterpark, dolphin and sea lion encounters, the Lost Chamber Aquarium (home to more than 65,000 marine animals), and high-end shops. You can snorkel, Scuba and PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certify in the property’s lagoon. And, this just may be the only (safe) place to hand feed sharks and stingrays after sunset.

A WORLD APART (CON TI N U ED)

For me, the highlight was the resort’s ShuiQi Spa, a two-story oasis with a trickling water wall and a celestial domed ceiling. I booked a 30-minute ZeroBody floating treatment that promised to ease jetlag, which after a 14-hour flight, I desperately needed. I lay on a water mattress pulsing with LED lights from which I was guided into a meditative state. The treatment was said to stimulate circulation and perhaps it did, but its

Ossiano restaurant

other claim to fame–relaxation–was evident. One of Dubai’s most extraordinary restaurants, the glow-

Spice souk

ing underwater Ossiano, is one of the big draws at Atlantis. The menu naturally nods towards the sea, which can make you feel just a touch uncomfortable as you watch your dinner’s brethren swim past. The night I dined here, it didn’t take long before a 600-pound grouper fixed an intense and persistent stare at my dining companion. To experience the essence of Dubai, though, you will have to resist the gravitational pull of Atlantis and head a few miles into downtown. The city is known for its steady march of high-rise towers, which dazzle and disorient, like the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, which soars 2,722 feet. Because Dubai is poised to host the World Expo in 2020, the skyline continues to be populated with construction cranes. As for the famed malls of Dubai, these temples of retail don’t disappoint. There are dancing fountains, a huge array of boutiques from Chanel to local silk shops, and if you hit the Mall of the Emirates, an indoor ski slope. The malls are your best chance to brush elbows with locals: men in kanduras, anklelength white cotton shirts, and women in everything from black burqas to daisy duke shorts. You can still discover pockets of traditional Arab life near to the new downtown. Take an abra, a traditional wooden boat, for the most atmospheric transfer across the Dubai Creek, and land at the docks steps from the souk. As you navigate the warren of narrow lanes that weave through the souks, the kaleidoscope of scents that waft from the stalls stand testament to a time not so long ago and prior to the oil boom when this was a thriving regional center, well regarded for its perfume and spice trades throughout the Arab world. After exploring the souk, I hail a taxi back to my home base at the Atlantis. As I’m sped along the fast new highway, the frenzy of the traditional neighborhood of squat buildings and dusty intersections gives way to the orderly new downtown with its gleaming skyscrapers. As we pull onto the dramatic drive that leads to Palm Island, I spot a Lamborghini, this one canary yellow. It zooms past my dinged up taxicab, and I can’t help but smile as the driver’s white ghutrah (headscarf ) flutters in Atlantis

The Beauty of Cuba THE COUNTRY IS KNOWN FOR ITS JUXTAPOSITION OF OLD AND NEW ARTICLE ALL STAR TRAVEL GROUP PHOTOGRAPHY DAVID ODAKA

the juxtaposition of old and new. While most of the country has

not changed in 60 years, half the buildings are in disrepair and seem uninhabitable. Yet, the grandeur of pre-Revolution Cuba is visible on the exteriors. Most of Havana’s buildings date from the 1800s, and their ornate facades recall 18th century Europe. Each building was once a vibrant color and featured grand marble staircases, intricate ironwork, high ceilings and plantation shutters. When driving through town in a mint condition crimson 1951 Buick convertible, it is easy to imagine Havana in its heyday. An ideal first day in Havana begins at the seaside Fort Morro Castle and continues walking through the cobblestone streets and charming plazas of Old Havana. Stop to enjoy coffee at Café El Escorial or a mojito at 304 O’Reilly and pop into the various galleries and shops. Explore the country’s rich history at the Museum of the City of Havana, the Museum of the Revolution and Museum of Fine Arts. It’s not uncommon to approach a dilapidated building and discover the treasure within. Such is the case of La Guarida, one of Havana’s best paladars, or private restau-

rants, run independently of the government. Ascending the staircase through what feels like a construction zone leads to the top floor establishment restored to its original splendor. A treat of octopus carpaccio showcases the innovation happening in Cuba, beginning with the rise of more paladars, which are infusing creativity, culinary diversity and sophistication into Cuban culture.

The city is also teeming with a booming art and music scene. Nightlife consists of lively music venues, some of which are simiFort Morro Castle

lar to clubs. Tropicana or Buena Vista Social Club are often mentioned, but more authentic places like El Cocinero are preferable. A day trip to the country is certainly worthwhile. During wet season, La Terraza offers a rainforest experience including zip-lining, waterfalls, caves, hiking and horseback riding. Continue west to the tobacco region, where the working farms supply crops to the Cohiba cigar brand. A travel advisor can arrange private tours/ demonstrations of these facilities. Farther west in Vinales, there are breathtaking views of the valley and the much-lauded Finca Organica, an incredible organic farm restaurant. A complete trip to Cuba includes Trinidad and Cienfuegos. Trinidad was founded in 1514 and is frozen in Spanish Colonial times. Eateries and shops adorn the 500-year-old cobblestone streets, and locals meet nightly in Plaza Musica for concerts. Nearby, Cienfuegos is a vibrant, French-influenced coastal city built in the late 1800s buzzing with activity, boutiques and cafes.

Cuba’s beaches are stunning, with fine white sand and crystal blue waters. While there are currently no luxury beachfront hotels, the resort area of Varadero is easily accessed as a day trip from Havana. Las Reinas is one of the world’s best snorkeling reefs and is protected by limiting visitors, but areas like Maria La Gorda and The Bay of Pigs also offer great diving. Visiting Cuba’s beaches is challenging for American travelers due to government regulations, so prospective visitors can consult their travel advisor for more information. Though Americans may visit Cuba, there are still regulations and restrictions. Visas are necessary, and a travel advisor who has personally visited is recommended for guidance. and food options. US credit/debit cards are not accepted, so bringing ample cash is essential. Most non-Cuban owned restaurants and stores accept Euros and Canadian dollars, which have a better exchange rate. A venerable travel advisor can arrange hotel prepayment and cash available upon arrival to limit how much cash travelers must carry. Having a knowledgeable and professional tour guide is a must. Though Cuba is quite safe, some street peddlers abound swindling tickets to a nonexistent salsa show or selling counterfeit cigars. A good tour guide knows most of these characters and wards them off. These “vendors” are mostly harmless, and locals are generally friendly, but be wary. Always buy cigars from a state-run shop to ensure authenticity; anyone off the street offering a co-op discount is fraudulent. Right now, Cuba has a simmering energy about to burst with change. Commercial opportunities are visible everywhere, and the race is

Newport Beach Becoming Ground Zero For The Global War On Super-Bugs By Simon Leach. A growing crisis has scientists and health officials across the world terrified. According to the World health Organization antibiotic resistant (AR) bacteria are projected to kill 10 Million people per year by 2050 at a cost of over $100 Trillion to the global economy. In the US alone, 2 Million people are hospitalized annually and over 100,000 die due to infection. Collidion, a California company with global sales and business development in Newport Beach, has found the answer in fighting antibiotic resistance by looking to our own immune system.

Immune cells use Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) to effortlessly obliterate any pathogens

Hypochlorous Acid Is Nature’s Most Potent Broad Spectrum antimicrobial compound. Anti-biotics have been the main line of defense in combatting infection since 1940, with the introduction of penicillin. Over 100 antibiotics have been introduced since then and they all have failed due to antibiotic resistance. James Resnick, a member of Collidion’s Scientific Advisory Board, Cardiologist and Newport Beach resident, described the current challenge. “Hospital acquired infections are a serious and growing problem for the healthcare industry. The current available chemical disinfectant technologies are either ineffective or too toxic to be used in medical environments.“. Our immune cells hold the key. Contained within white blood cells is a cell called a Phagocyte that produces a compound called Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl). HOCl is proven to kill all pathogens within seconds of contact. It is safe, reduces painful inflammation and accelerates wound healing. Until Hoji Alimi, founder of Collidion discovered a process to stabilize HOCl it was unviable as a commercial product. Dr. Jerry Stonemetz, Vice-Chair of Clinical Operations at Johns Hopkins University and Chairman of Collidion’s Scientific Advisory Board believes the challenge of stabilizing HOCl has been solved by Collidion and it has great potential in Hospital settings. “Stabilizing HOCl for use in medicines and disinfectants is a major advancement. I am very optimistic about Collidion’s HOCL solutions. HOCL based products have the potential to become the standard of care in hospital’s and medical facilities .

Collidion Anticipates 2017 Product Launch. William H. Watson III, Co-Founder and Vice President of Global Sales and Business Development for Collidion explains the company’s position.

“In 2016, the cost of managing infection control in the US healthcare system exceeded $120 Billion. We believe we have the solution to significantly cut costs for the healthcare system while dramatically improving patient outcomes.”

Perhaps most encouraging is that Collidion’s products kill microbes without creating additional antibiotic resistance. Their confidence is so high they are building manufacturing capacity to supply over $1 Billion in product per year, to come online in 2017.
