Editor's Letter
Celebrating Two Years of Inspiring Community O
ur magazine's publisher, Randy Harding, launched this publication two years ago on pretty much a wing and a prayer. He firmly believed in creating a community-inspired magazine that, as he puts it in his "Happy Birthday Newport Beach Lifestyle magazine" story in this issue, had to be "a publication where the local businesses could generate interest in their products and services, and the readers could embrace the stories of the people and the history that is Newport Beach." Here we are, two years later, and Randy is a happy man. He is pleased to have created a community-inspired, relevant publication that our readership thinks highly of. And, he is excited to see that advertising has generated great results for our advertisers.
Kendra Mathewson, author of "Birds on a Wire" in our Parting Thoughts column, talks about the importance of community and how "one-on-one connections expand and extend and become a beautiful web of interconnectedness." As you read this issue, you will see how people in our community have reached out to others to create the community she's talking about. Valarie Van Cleave, who has a passion for protecting and restoring the oceans, co-founded Oceana's SeaChange Summer Party, which generates more money than any of the nonprofit's other fundraisers. Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization focused solely on ocean conservation in the world. Another example is Sue Hook, who began reaching out in her high school years to children and young adults suffering from the life threatening disease, cystic fibrosis, and has dedicated her life to finding a cure and better treatments for them. Her cystic fibrosis community is her life. Twenty-two-year-old Morgan Simmsgeiger's love for teaching children piano and the pure joy in learning to play led her to create a thriving business, Piano for Kids. Just take a look at the smiles on her students' faces in her story. And, OC Caravan's Co-Hosts and Co-Producers Scott Hays and Jim Bastian interview amazing people on their weekly television show, who are constantly engaging the community to do wonderful things, and those people live right here.

NEW GENERATION OF CHINESE ARTISTS SHOWCASED AT OCMA My Generation: Young Chinese Artists, the exhibition that Orange County Museum of Arts (OCMA) recently launched and which runs through October 11, 2015, is a look at the new generation of artists emerging in mainland China since 2000. Born after 1976, all of them are products of the One Child Policy, have grown up with a high-powered market economy and been exposed to global art movements through the Internet and, increasingly, liberalized education at China’s art academies. They have much to say about their homeland– positive and negative–and are able to navigate around the restrictions of censorship and cultural differences. The exhibition is supported by The Segerstrom Foundation, Visionaries and Chopard. OCMA.net
Assistance League of Newport-Mesa, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, has a storied tradition of providing scholarships to the community's youth. Fourteen students from the Newport-Mesa high schools–Newport Harbor High School, Corona del Mar High School, Estancia High School, Costa Mesa High School, Early College High School, Back Bay High School–were chosen to receive $2,000 scholarships for their higher education pursuits. The awards were presented at a luncheon in their honor, where the guest speaker was David A. Grant, Coast Community College District trustee, President Emeritus of Orange Coast College and 1958 recipient of an ALNM scholarship. Presiding was ALNM Scholarship Committee Chair Mary Lynn Bergman-Rallis and President Karen Treaccar. ALNM.org

Bolsa Chica Conservancy, celebrating its 25th year of service to the community and environment, held its annual Barefoot Ball at Bolsa Chica State Beach, where more than 250 guests enjoyed partying on the sand. Dr. Jerry Schubel, President and CEO of Aquarium of the Pacific, received the conservancy’s Conservator of the Year award. It was presented by noted marine artist Wyland, who was the 2014 recipient. "The Bolsa Chica Conservancy and the Aquarium of the Pacfic share the same focus on education as a way to engage youth and the public in the long-term effort to conserve coastal resources like wetlands and the ocean," Schubel says. After 29 years at the helm of the very successful Irvine Barclay Theatre, Douglas C. Rankin is stepping down on August 31st. With the Barclay celebrating its 25th anniversary season, Rankin arrived on the scene four years before opening in order to help fund, construct, equip, staff, and set the program for the opening season in 1990. Under Rankin’s leadership, the Barclay has earned a reputation for diverse, often challenging, programming in dance, music and theatre, frequently showcasing national and international artists not seen elsewhere in southern California. INNOVATIVE DINING CONCEPTS EXPANDS INTO ORANGE COUNTY WITH A STUNNING NEW EATERY AT FASHION ISLAND ARTICLE JENN TANAKA PHOTOGRAPHY DANIEL HARSADI
O
n a brisk Sunday morning, shoppers at Fashion Island strolled by the new addition to the center’s dining scene. While this Newport Beach location just opened in June, the Sushi Roku restaurants, owned by Innovative Dining Concepts, perfected this luxe style of dining decades ago. With locations in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Pasadena and West Hollywood–and another at the swanky W Hotel in Scottsdale–Sushi Roku knows how to blend a hip ambiance with decadently refined Japanese fare. Passersby can’t help but peer in from the sidewalk through the large glass windows that reveal an open dining room with touches of dark wood and a festive row of ornately shaped bonsai trees. Clean white paper lanterns hang above the entryway in front of the maître d’ desk. It’s as if the lanterns signal that once you pass through this area, you are in a serene space where relaxation and trust in the chef go hand-in-hand. Whether fresh fish offerings from the sushi counter or savory, hot dishes, such as the restaurant’s signature truffle miso glazed Chilean sea bass, customers will find a variety of awakening flavors. Succulent chunks of delicate blue crab enrobed in a creamy aioli are tempting enough, but in true Sushi Roku-fashion, the dish is elevated to the next decadent level. Fresh uni that tastes like a refreshing splash of the sea and delicate beads of caviar garnish the crabmeat, while a pool of rich truffle sauce swims beneath. The dish is elegantly served, chilled over a bed of ice, with bright edible pansy blossoms and red rose petals encircling the plate. Another simple, albeit beautiful, plate of fluke sashimi topped with bright orange slices of candied kumquat, surprises and delights our tablemates. Cilantro leaves

brighten the dish and a yuzu vinaigrette lends an acidic bite to the translucent slices of fluke. Surprising sushi options shouldn’t be that much of a surprise once you discover that Sushi Roku’s Executive Sushi Chef, Hiroshi Shima, spent the past four decades perfecting his craft as a Japanese food maven. His signature roll blends the flavors of a classic ebi (shrimp) maki roll with a Vietnamese spring roll. Wrapped in a thin sheet of rice paper, the roll is topped with slices of fresh shrimp. While this at first seems like a predictable spicy tuna roll with avocado, what really brings this dish’s flavors together are the cilantro leaves and dots of Sriracha chili sauce that grace each bite. For those diners averse to raw fish, the “Farm” and “Katana’s Robata Skewers” offer a hot alternative. Spears

of fresh asparagus are wrapped in paper-thin sheets of savory ribeye beef. The teriyaki-like sauce that accompanies these asparagus stalks makes this dish almost impossible to stop eating. A friend of mine who dined with me coyly asked, “Who should finish the last one? It would be a shame to waste.” And, at Sushi Roku in Newport Beach, it’s easy to over order. Each dish is plated with such visual panache that when another table orders a sashimi salad or a f lowering plate of vegetable tempura, we can’t help but follow suit. We’re not disappointed.
If you can save room for dessert, and this is especially difficult if you’re dining at lunch, the interactive s’more is the one thing you should share. The dessert elevates the s’mores you knew as a child and refines it for a decidedly adult palate. The graham crackers are crushed into a sand-like consistency before the chef beautifully spreads them out across the plate, grooming each granule into place like a Zen garden. Stacks of dark chocolate, Matcha green tea truffles, house made marshmallows and a vessel filled with gooey marshmallow spread make up the four quadrants of the plate. Positioned in the center is a bowl filled with miniature charcoal cubes. As our server lights the tiny fire pit set on our table, we can’t help but coo at the sweet treat. While we know we started the meal at Fashion Island, by the time we walk past the white lanterns-fixture hanging above the door, we realize that we’ve been transported a million miles away.

A LIFETIME COMMITMENT A PASSIONATE CYSTIC FIBROSIS SUPPORTER, CORONA DEL MAR RESIDENT SUE HOOK HAS SUPPORTED THE CAUSE SINCE HIGH SCHOOL ARTICLE DONNA BUNCE | PHOTOGRAPHY EDWARD OLIVER
S
ue Hook was just 15 and a sophomore at Paramount High School in Los Angeles in 1965 when she and her friend, Nancy Myers, found out about a little boy in their neighborhood who had cystic fibrosis. “We formed a club and called ourselves The Conquerettes,” Sue says. “We were going to conquer cystic fibrosis.” The life expectancy at that time for children with cystic fibrosis was less than five years (today, it is 41). Hook relates that the 15-member club raised money through paper drives and selling doughnuts throughout their neighborhood. “I remember visiting other high schools to organize more clubs, with El Modena High School in Orange on the list,” she says. Moving to Anaheim in 1969, Hook worked as program director for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Orange County, for three years. Leaving employment with the foundation in 1972, but continuing to volunteer, she worked in sales at the company where her father was employed. Dave Hook met Sue, as he was the landlord for the foundation offices that were located in Anaheim. Because he was a member of the International 20-30 Club, a service organization for men between those ages, he and the club members became involved with CF events, among them a radio auction. The Hooks were married in 1978, and, in 1982, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Orange County Guild was formed, with its inaugural gala launched the following year. 20

“Dave and I attended as guests the first year,” Sue says, “with me joining the gala committee the next year, and in 1985, the third year, Dave and I were presented the gala’s Breath of Life Award for our support.” In 1987, Sue became gala chairman, a role she continued for 20 years. She is quick to say that she had a variety of co-chairs during those years–Heidi Miller, Cindy Parker, Eva Mann, Karen Hall, and Dean Gerrie, among others. It was in the early 1980s that Dave became a national trustee on the Cystic Fibrosis National Foundation Board, later suggesting to Sue in 1985 that she take his place. She has continued to serve as a trustee on the national board for 30 years, and, after becoming Guild President in 1988, she has since served 26 of the last 27 years in that capacity. Sue was thrilled in 2009, when she gave the gala chairmanship reins to Gayle and Dan Demsher, who she says have done a fantastic job. The Demsher’s son, Connor, now 15, has cystic fibrosis. “Their energy and commitment is amazing,” she says of the dedicated couple. According to Sue, it was decided that this year’s gala, the 32nd, would be the final gala for the Orange County Guild. She says there were a number of reasons for the decision–Gayle is extremely busy as the national sales director for Katherine Cosmetics and the same could be said for many of the other committee members.
“Besides that,” Sue says, “there are two other Orange County cystic fibrosis fundraisers at the same time–our Klassic Golf Event six weeks before the gala and Pipeline to a Cure six weeks after the gala. By retiring our event, our members will be able to devote their time and energy to many other CF fundraisers.” The final gala, held May 31st at the Newport Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, was attended by 385 guests and netted nearly $400,000 for CF. “We are certainly leaving on a high note,” Sue says. “We honored Judy and Bob Burlingham with the Breath of Life Award, which was great because Judy has chaired Pipeline to a Cure for years. And, we got a chance to recognize and thank those who helped us raise more than $11 million the past 32 years. It felt like a big group hug from the podium.” The evening included 28-year-old Stacy Motenko speaking about life with cystic fibrosis. It was her 14th year to speak at the gala, ever since Sue suggested she chronicle her life with CF after she saw the impact several young people had sharing their cystic fibrosis journey with people attending CF’s American Airlines-sponsored Celebrity Ski Weekend in Vail, Colorado. “Stacy is a tenacious, reflective speaker and is a beautiful girl inside and out,” Sue says. “Her accomplishments are amazing, one of which is being part of a 13-member panel advising the FDA and also serving on the Cystic Fibrosis Adult Advisory Committee.”
Sue Hook and Stacy Motenko
Of Sue, Shawn Parr, host of Nash Nights Live, NashFm 94.7, in Nashville, Breath of Life honoree and 21-year gala master of ceremonies and auctioneer, says: “I’ve never met anyone who pushes so hard and gives so much–so freely–who doesn’t have to. There is no one in her family with cystic fibrosis. She is amazing!” Stacy, who was diagnosed with CF at three months of age, says of Sue: “She is the prime example of someone who has dedicated their life to helping others. It is not possible to express my gratitude to her for all that she has done to allow me and all the others with CF to live better, longer lives. And, when that day comes when there is a cure or control for all people with cystic fibrosis, I hope Sue knows the large role that she played in making that happen.” Sue gets emotional when she talks about Stacy and the gala committee, many of whom have been with her for decades. But, even more telling is what the committee has to say about her. Here is just a sampling: GAIL ISEN, Guild executive vice president and secretary, 28-year gala reservations chairman and Stacy Motenko’s aunt: “Sue keeps in touch with, and informed about, so many of the CF patients. However, her caring nature is not limited to those with CF. She is the favorite 'aunt' of the children and grandchildren of everyone in the Guild, always asking about them and knows all their names. She means the world to all of us.” KAREN HALL, 20+-year arrangements chairman: “Sue has been an inspiration to me since our first meeting. ‘Sweet Sue,’ as Dave calls her, is at the top of the list for so many families and CF patients. She has given them hope in the past, in the present, and in the future.” DANNI GOOD, nine-year raffle chairman, who lost two nephews to CF: “Sue is without a doubt the most dynamic, inspiring and devoted woman I know. She just keeps giving and going strong for this cause.” GAYLE AND DAN DEMSHER, seven-year gala chairs: “Sue is the most amazing, compassionate, driven person we have ever met, and we are so fortunate she is a leader CONTINUED > in the fight to end CF.”

Former committee design chairman and Breath of Life recipient DEAN GERRIE (he designed and implemented the invitations and commemorative journal for 30 years): “Sue’s commitment to CF is breathtaking!” WALTER URIE, another Breath of Life awardee, who has photographed the CF children annually for 27 years to showcase their photos at the gala: “Sue has been at every single photo shoot with the CF children. She greets each family, asking how their child is doing and always has Sees Candies for the kids. If anybody deserves recognition, she does.” SHAWN PARR, host of Nash Nights Live, NashFM 94.7, in Nashville, Breath of Life honoree and 21-year gala master of ceremonies and auctioneer: “I’ve never met anyone who pushes so hard and gives so much–so freely–who doesn’t have to. There is no one in her family with cystic fibrosis. She is amazing!” PAUL MOTENKO, nine-year president of the Southern California Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and 28-year supporter with wife Debbie through daughter Stacy (the Motenko and Isen families were presented the Breath of Life Award in 2002): “The lives of so many of our children are better because of Sue. She is a true hero!” Amazed she has no connection to cystic fibrosis and yet has devoted her life to the cause, Sue says when asked about it, “But, I do have a major connection to CF through the children with CF and their families. Not all of them have survived, and those memorial services are difficult, at best, but, we are so close to the final answers, and I will be thrilled when that day comes.” Sue is more than satisfied with her life’s journey.

“This is what I was meant to do,” she says. “The path was there, and I followed it. And, I must say, without Dave’s support and encouragement, I couldn’t have accomplished what I have.” “It is the end of an era, but not the end of the Guild. But, it is bittersweet. I must admit that I will miss my special day with Walter Urie, as he shoots the photos of those with CF. I always considered that day my perk.” CFF.org Debbie, Stacy and Paul Motenko

The Cape’s iconic geography looks like an arm thrust into the Atlantic Ocean from mainland Massachusetts. It is beloved for its unpretentious beauty. Most of is 408-square-miles–from its wind-tossed beaches to the forests, marshes and even many of its towns– are protected by the National Park Service and that has resulted in a pristine place, largely unchanged by time. Crossing the Sagamore Bridge onto the Cape is like discovering a wrinkle in time. Thanks to strong preservation and strict zoning codes, the landscape looks the same as it did a half-century ago when John F. Kennedy frolicked here and not that much different than it did when it first welcomed the Pilgrims when they landed the Mayflower here. Route 6
remains the only main road to traverse the 70-miles length of the peninsula and it does so via two lanes for much of the ride. My bolthole for my trip is The Wequassett Resort, a 120-room property that is infused with Yankee elegance. Rooms are tucked within shake shingles cottages that meander along the water. These are serene spaces with luxurious marble baths and balconies overlooking Pleasant Bay and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. My first night on the Cape I dine at Twenty-Eight Atlantic. Because of the chilly evening, I am seated beside the fireplace beneath hand-blown glass chandeliers. In fine weather, al fresco dining on the sweeping terrace is enhanced by air perfumed with
native honeysuckle. The summer menu taps all of what is good and fresh and oh-so-temporary on the Cape, like oysters plucked from the bay, steps from the kitchen, and roasted cod topped with tender steamed clams, hauled by local fishermen. There’s no getting around the fact that summers on the Cape are crowded. This is where New Englanders flock as a reward to themselves for their patience through harsh winters. And, the rewards are singularly spectacular. There are pristine beaches studded with iconic lighthouses, tufted dunes that yield to the ocean, where seals, whales and sharks make their playground, hiking and biking trails that slice through a reverie of flitting June bugs, scurrying horse shoes crabs, plump blackberries and beach plums, and dense cranberry bogs. One of the most treasured pastimes on the Cape for visitors and locals is the hunt for the perfect lobster (“lobstah”) roll. Debates rage as to which shack or dive serves the best. For me, the greatest fun was in the search. A few favorites? The no frills Young Fish Market in Orleans, where you can devour your roll on the seawall overlooking the ocean. At Spanky’s, a clam bar on the harbor in Hyannis, you can make your own overstuffed sandwiches by piling on their homemade lobster salad. At the Friendly Fisherman in Eastham, lobster rolls are classic and CONTINUED > simply made with lobster, mayo and a hot dog bun, and not a thing more.

The Cape is fun to explore because of its many charming historic towns. Hyannis, home to the JFK Museum and the famed Kennedy Compound, remains a working fishing port. Wellf leet, a tiny town with fine art galleries, is also home to Marconi Station, where the first transatlantic telegraph was sent. Chatham’s preppy population and smart clothing, toy and furnishing shops define its downtown. In nearby Yarmouth, gothic illustrator Edward Gorey’s home is now a museum, and 26

Sandwich, the oldest town on the Cape, has seven museums, including one dedicated to the region’s legacy of glassblowing. And, finally, there’s Provincetown, the funky outpost nestled at the very tip of the Cape. Its artistic vibe owes much to talent like Tennessee Williams, Eugene O’Neill, Norman Mailer, and filmmaker John Waters, who have called the town home. A dozen performing arts venues host summer festivals almost without pause. There are galleries, oyster bars and old-fashioned candy shops. One of my favorite things to do in P-Town (as it’s known by locals) is to climb the 252 steps to the top of Pilgrim’s Monument, an early 20th century granite tower that affords a smashing view both of the Atlantic and the bay. Cape Cod has inspired so many songs, poems and books, because, in a world of increased uniformity, it offers a distinctive experience unique to its place in the world. And besides, there are few places more fun to kick off your shoes, scamper into the brisk ocean and turn your face to the sun.

Oceana's SeaChange Summer Party
O
ceana was founded in 2001 by a group of leading foundations after a study they commissioned revealed that less than 0.5 percent of all resources spent by environmental nonprofit groups in the United States went to ocean advocacy, an appalling statistic! In other words, no organization was working exclusively to protect and restore the oceans on a global scale. To fill the gap, the founders created Oceana: an international organization focused solely on oceans, dedicated to achieving measurable change by conducting specific, science-based campaigns with fixed deadlines and articulated goals. In 2002, Oceana merged with American Oceans Campaign, founded in 1987 by actor and environmentalist Ted Danson, to more effectively address the common mission of protecting and restoring the world’s oceans. To date, Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization focused solely on ocean conservation in the world and has won more than 100 victories and protected more than one million square miles of ocean. It has been a steady, concerted effort, with the mission coming directly to Orange County in 2008, when the nonprofit’s inaugural SeaChange Summer Party was held to raise funds for the cause. From the outset, the SeaChange Summer Party has been a success. Sold out every year with more than 400 guests at a private estate in Laguna Beach, the effort raises more money for the nonprofit than any of its fundraisers, nearly $8 million in seven years. The SeaChange Summer Party co-founders are Valarie Van Cleave and Julie Hill, with Van Cleave co-chairing the next year’s benefit with Ted Danson and each succeeding SeaChange party with Eve Kornyei Ruffatto. Van Cleave was a natural for Oceana, as she was a seasoned scuba diver and had seen first-hand the rapid deterioration of the oceans. “It was alarming, and I wanted to do something about it. Julie and I thought we could produce an event to raise both awareness and funds, and SeaChange was born.” Besides offering an elegant seated gourmet dinner and top-drawer auctions, SeaChange has drawn a star-studded group of celebrities to celebrate Oceana and its victories. Among them have been Harrison Ford, Glenn Close, Leonardo DiCaprio, Dennis Haysbert, Josh Brolin, Diane Lane, Sam Waterston, Pierce Brosnan, Morgan Freeman, as well as Jeff Goldblum, Jeff Bridges and Sheryl Crow, all of whom performed. Alexandra and Philippe Cousteau, Jr., grandchildren of the famous oceans explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, were special guests for their work on ocean issues. This year’s eighth annual SeaChange Summer Party will be held August 1st at The Strand at Headlands in Dana Point and will feature a “Mad About the Oceans!” theme with special guests, Mad Men stars Jon Hamm and January Jones. Marine ecologist and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Enric Sala will be honored. Danson will once again be attending. Van Cleave, who serves as vice chair on Oceana’s international board, has nothing but wonderful things to say about him. “Oceana is fortunate to have the hardest working man in ocean conservation on our board. He devotes an incredible Van Cleave amount of time to the oceans.” sums it up nicely: Danson, who is also a mem“Our mission is to save ber of Oceana’s board, says the oceans to feed the of his involvement: world. The planet must produce 70 percent more food to meet the coming hunger needs, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Right now, one billion people on this planet suffer from hunger, and there is not enough arable land and fresh water to feed two billion more people without incurring severe losses to the natural world. The oceans cover 71 percent of the globe and provide livelihoods to countless fishermen and others around the world. They also feed hundreds of millions of people and have the capacity to provide a healthy seafood meal to a billion people every day. Unfortunately, the oceans are in trouble. the oceans began declining-for the first time in recorded history– just a few decades ago. Oceana has a solution–wild fish. Studies show that by implementing better and proven management measures, the potential increase in the global fish catch could be up 40 percent from current levels. Oceana believes that by rebuilding ocean biodiversity and abundance, nearly a billion people can eat a healthy seafood meal each day. “We think wild fish should be an important part of the food matrix because it is the lowest cost of animal protein, uses no fresh water or land and virtually no CO2 emissions,” Van Cleave says. “It is what we call the perfect protein.” Van Cleave points out that Oceana CEO, Andrew Sharpless, together with co-author Suzannah Evans, wrote the book, The Perfect Protein, explaining how wild fish are the perfect protein and, when properly managed, can provide a delicious, nutritious and renewable source of protein for millions of people. Unfortunately, studies show that irresponsible fishing has reduced many wild fish populations to historically low levels right at the moment when the world needs its oceans more than ever. Oceana campaigns in the countries that control 25 percent of the world’s wild fish catch in order to win policy victories that can increase biodiversity in our oceans and deliver more seafood in the future. Oceana’s approach has achieved dozens of concrete policy victories for marine life and habitats. Proper management of fisheries have yielded success in Norway with herring, Japan with snow crab, and European Union’s Bay of Biscay with anchovy. Recently, with sea lions starving off the California coastline, in larger part because sardines were being over fished, Oceana convinced the Pacific Fisheries Management Council to shut down this fishery in the short term and establish new quotas going forward. Destructive and wasteful fishing practices with longlines, gillnets and trawl nets, which kill indiscriminately and damage important habitat, are also being addressed, as well as the big problem of illegal fishing around the world. Van Cleave explains the wasteful fishing practices further.

“Right now, off the coast of California, there are mile-long drift nets targeting swordfish," she says. "Unfortunately, these nets collect everything, including whales, dolphins, turtles and sharks. It’s documented that more than 600 of these animals are killed in commercial fishing nets each year off our coastline. Many more are suspected. There are less wasteful and harmful fishing gears available to catch swordfish. Oceana is working to transition this fishery to these methods.” Ruffatto, who grew up in Budapest, Hungary, never saw an ocean until age 13, when her parents took her there. “It was so beautiful–clean and filled with life–and it made a huge impression on me,” she says. A self-confessed environmentalist by nature, Ruffatto has embraced Oceana because she wants future generations to be able to experience what she did at age 13. One of the issues that Oceana addresses is seafood fraud, which is high on Ruffatto’s list of concerns. “When you buy fish or order it in a restaurant, you want to confidently know what it is because it is honestly and thoroughly labeled,” Ruffatto says. From 2010 to 2012, Oceana conducted one of the largest seafood fraud investigations in the world, collecting more than 1,200 samples from 674 retail outlets in 21 states to determine if they were honestly labeled. DNA testing found that one-third, or 33 percent, of the samples were mislabeled. And, despite frequent media coverage, as well as state and federal enforcement on the issue, seafood fraud remains a persistent problem in the U.S. The Oceana study suggests federal attention to ensure that the seafood sold in the U.S. is safe, legal and honestly labeled, just like other foods we eat. Suffice it to say, this 14-year-old protector and restorer of our most precious resource is making an impact, and its victories represent a new hope for the world’s oceans. Van Cleave sums it up nicely: “Our mission is to save the oceans to feed the world. We are not anti-fishing. It just needs to be done in a sustainable way, so the hundreds of millions of people who rely on fishing for their livelihood and wild fish as their source of protein, can continue to do so for generations to come.” Oceana.org

ou probably have heard the saying, “Information is power.” In the 20th century, information and its distribution were controlled by centralized media platforms. Large information bureaus like the Associated Press and others were very powerful and had the ability to control what, when, and how information was going to be seen and heard. Likewise, the promotion of products and services were seen only through the same well-established media platforms. Their influence over our buying decisions and habits was unprecedented. If we were going to drink something, we had better drink Coke, because it was “The real thing.” For those of us with wild hair, Brylcreem told us that “A little dab will do you!” For those of us that love beef, we were asked by a funny, little old lady on behalf of Wendy’s, “Where’s the beef?” Today, newspapers, radio and TV share the market with the Internet, which is a de-centralized media platform. The power has shifted to the people. We decide what we watch, read and purchase. If we want to buy something today, we can do a Google search and find out who sells it and what the best price is. Our best option may even be someone that lives half way around the world. We have become very demanding and selective consumers, and the options in the marketplace have multiplied considerably.

Social media is the newest online innovation. Individuals and groups can share their thoughts, opinions, and lives with others instantly and with no geographical boundaries. It has had a profound transformational effect on our behavior. Families sit at tables in restaurants, and, instead of holding a conversation, they are on their own smartphones either texting, reading emailing, playing games, or surfing the net. I’ve seen couples on dates sitting together, but, instead of interacting with each other, their heads are buried in their phones…together, but separate. Global news correspondents now interact with TV anchors via Skype or FaceTime, instead of having to deal with expensive satellite feeds. The communication paradigm has now shifted even more dramatically in the last 10 years. As you may have already realized, today we live in a whole new environment…a world where 70 percent of newspaper readers are over the age of 65. Social media has been so heavily embraced by the younger population that only 10 percent of people between the ages of 30 and 55 even read newspapers. The terrible atrocities and events that are being seen in the news today are the same things that have been happening for decades. The difference is now we have the ability to capture them instantaneously through video with our smartphones
and share that with people around the world in seconds. Our perception that the world has become a worse place is due to a dramatic increase in the frequency of events that we are exposed to. We can get any international news instantaneously on our smartphones. The online platform made the market a tougher place for print media. Print media is slower and more costly to produce than online. In the five years leading up to 2012, the number of firms operating in this industry were expected to fall an average of 2.2 percent annually. Market consolidation, the closing of plants, and the downsizing of employee headcounts were the trend when Lifestyle Publications approached me to consider this venture. I can’t say that I wasn’t a bit skeptical. This is the outstanding environment in which I chose to launch Newport Beach Lifestyle magazine. I’ve done many things in my life, but, in all of them, my ability to sell has come in Pictured left, clockwise: Magazine; Newport Beach Lifestyle magazine's one-year anniversary party; Donna Bunce, right, with Julie Ann Ulcickas at party celebrating Bunce's new role as editor of Newport Beach Lifestyle; Newport Beach Lifestye Magazine Vice President Ana Launes, Publisher Randy Harding, and The Food Stalker blogger Sandie Ward
As a result, we have created a beautiful, high quality, community-inspired, relevant publication, which is well-established and generates fantastic results for our advertisers. I am so excited about what this magazine has become and where it is headed! It is now two years old and has many more relevant and profitable years ahead as Newport Beach’s community magazine. handy. The sales approach made sense to me, and the approach to market was sound. I empathized with the small and medium sized-business owners, because I had been one for decades. I wanted to help them grow their businesses and to succeed. At the same time, I have a heart for giving back to the community. I also wanted to help the outreach of non-profit organizations. Before I launched this magazine, I heard it all. “You’re doing what?” “You’re crazy!” “You’re kidding…right!?” “Do you know how many magazines there are down here in this area?!” “Good luck with that one!” “I wish you all the luck in the world…you’re going to need it!” “There is no way you are going to even get this thing launched!” I was not surprised to hear them, but I was not deterred. That is why I believe that in order to succeed, I needed to create a specialized magazine–one that was a community-inspired publication that always had at least 50 percent content featuring the community. It had to be a publication where the local businesses could generate interest in their products and services and the readers could embrace the stories of the people and the history that is Newport Beach. Thank you so much for your ongoing support as a reader of this publication! Happy Birthday, Newport Beach Lifestyle magazine…and many, many more!

The student-instructors get to do what they love and earn a good income while going to school. From Tina Pham in a Yelp review: “My daughter Hailey has been taking piano lessons for a little over a year now. She absolutely enjoys it and looks forward to her weekly lessons. She is more confident in herself with all the help and motivation she gets from her teacher. I’m very happy to say that Hailey received a Junior Prodigy Award at the Summer Recital. OC Caravan is Making its Mark

C Caravan is an eclectic mix of interviews, politics, music, and, as Producer/Host Scott Hays says, “conversations about random stuff that we find interesting.” The show broadcasts on Cox-TV, Channel 3, 8 p.m. Saturdays and noon Sundays. The television show developed from a radio show called “The Friendship Show” that Hays co-hosted with Laguna Beach-based nonprofit Friendship Shelter executives Dawn Price and Mark Miller in late 2013. That particular show segued into Radio Caravan, a radio show on KX 93.5 FM, which launched in February, 2014, with Hays and Robert Palmer serving as co-hosts and co-producers. Around the time Radio Caravan commenced, it also became a Cox-TV show and continued that way until the unfortunate and untimely death of Palmer. “When Robert died, I immediately cancelled the following weekend’s show,” Hays says. “The week after that we had already planned a show with psychic medium James Van Praagh, and Robert’s wife and daughter wanted to air the show as a tribute to Robert. And, because the family encouraged me to continue the show, I found a new co-host/co-producer.” “Jim Bastian and I immediately connected. He had always wanted to do a radio show, so he filled the co-host/co-producer role with Radio Caravan, both for the radio and television show.” Soon after, Radio Caravan changed its name to OC Caravan in January 2015, and in March 2015, the radio aired its final radio broadcast, though the cable TV show continues to thrive, with its half-hour discussions twice a week with thought-provoking and engaging guests about issues that impact the community. A variety of guests have been featured, including Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Macy Gray, iconic rock ‘n’ roll photographer Henry Diltz, UCI professor and gang intervention specialist Al Valdez and The Real Housewives of Orange County stars Tamra and Eddie Judge.

Other recent guests have included actor Chris Mulkey, mystery-suspence author T. Jefferson Parker, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Rick Reiff, with future shows to include UCLA basketball standout John Vallely, marine artist Wyland, “Peaceful Easy Feeling” songwriter Jack Tempchin, and a tribute to surf manufacturing icon Hobie Alter. Both Hays’ and Bastian’s backgrounds serve them well in this venture. Hays holds a master’s degree in English literature and in communications and has more than 20 years experience as an editor/writer for general consumer and business-to-business publications. He has contributed feature articles and cover stories to various national magazines, newspapers and websites and co-authored several non-fiction books. He continues to teach part-time at several Southern California colleges. Bastian, who is a partner with the law firm Shulman Hodges & Bastian, has been committed to community service dating back to when he received the Chancellor’s Service Award while an undergraduate at UCLA. He is Mission Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors vice chairman and is active in helping raise money for numerous charity organizations, including Education for Children, Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, and The Public Law Center. And, speaking of nonprofits, OC Caravan is teaming up with Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County for “A Song for Alzheimer’s” competition. The winning songwriter will win eight hours of studio recording time at Laguna Sound Studio, a guest appearance on OC Caravan’s television show, promotion on KX 93.5 FM, Wahoo’s Fish Tacos gift certificates, and a chance to perform live at the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” at Angel Stadium in November. THROUGH SEPTEMBER 13 THE 1968 EXHIBIT BOWERS MUSEUM
The 1968 Exhibit at Bowers Museum is an ambitious, state-of-the-art, multimedia exhibit that looks at how the experiences of the year fueled a persistent, if often contradictory, sense of identity for the people who were there. The social forces that swirled through the turbulent 1960s crested in 1968. It was a turning point for a generation coming of age and a nation at war. The year saw the peak of the Vietnam War, the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, riots at the Democratic National Convention, assertions of Black Power at the Olympic Games, and feminist demonstrations at the Miss America pageant. Hair opened on Broadway, Laugh-In debuted and became the number-one show on TV, Bonnie and Clyde and The Graduate picked up Oscars and Johnny Cash gave a legendary performance at Folsom Prison. President Lyndon Johnson spoke of a country "challenged, at home and abroad" in his State of the Union address; his successor, Richard Nixon, promised in his nomination acceptance speech that "the long, dark night for America is about to end." In the closing days of the year, we saw Earth in its entirety for the first time from the window of the Apollo 8 space capsule. Visit Bowers.org for museum hours and ticket information.

Birds on a Wire WORDS KENDRA MATHEWSON
O
ne of my dear friends is a painter who sees the world through her amazing artist eyes. When she was the newbie in our neighborhood, her heart was sensitive to how to integrate her family into the community. Driving one day she noticed how birds perched on a wire seemed to choose when to gather, and who to pause with. As she watched the birds sit, and then come and go, those birds spoke to her of how we create community, who we keep counsel with, and even the dynamic nature of the process. She had moved in down the street, and it was my love of her work that initially drew us together. We shared a moment of connection on my front porch steps, and lingered like the birds chatting on the telephone wire, before we flew off back to our hectic lives. Over the years, through working on house projects, painting together, building a club, learning new skills together, cooking meals at each other's homes, playing cards as couples, we’d

pause from the “flights” our lives demanded (me flying around in my minivan and she in her miniCooper) to sit like those birds on a wire and talk over tea. This is how we became friends. That is community. That is how community begins and how it grows. These one-on-one connections expand and extend and become a beautiful web of interconnectedness. Through words, stories, shared experiences and common interests, we find inspiration to create our communities, which is where we call, "home." My friend’s keen observations became the main theme of a series that has become her signature. The beauty of her Birds on a Wire series, and her ref lections on community, have inspired me to embrace and celebrate more the important place it has in our lives. We live in such an individualistic society that our personal empowerment sometimes overshadows the significance of
our need for each other. Like the ingredients of an exceptional recipe, or the materials used to construct a quality home, a community is only as good as the people who comprise it. Because the people are who ignite an idea, imagine a future, share an event, take the bull by the horns, see a need a fill it, spread the word about a new business, open their home to new families, bring a meal when there’s an illness, invest in a neighbor or believe in a student, give witness to struggles and celebrate successes. This magazine is your “wire.” Let us pause to read the stories that have been inspired by our home, our community, to drink in the beautiful photographs that paint the story of us. Email your editor and publisher, or better yet reach out and enjoy a cup of coffee together. Let us stop here in the pages of our publication each month and celebrate like birds on a wire, before we fly off back to our busy lives. You inspire us.
