Celebrating Independence Day!
O
ur country will be 239 years old on the Fourth of July, our Independence Day. It seems fitting that our cover shows Betsy Ross and her handiwork, albeit a Pageant of the Masters recreation (with real people posing) made to look like Edward Percy Moran's "The Birth of Old Glory." The total recreation can be seen below with Ross showing the flag to General George Washington. Our Locals Only story about the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor's Sixth Annual Field of Honor with its 1,776 American flags at Castaways Park on Armed Forces Day weekend touches hearts, and Suzette Zara's Red White & Blueberries recipe featuring some yummy offerings is perfect for a Fourth of July picnic. You will be entertained, as I was, to learn that longtime Newport Beach resident Cecilia DeMille Presley was raised by her grandfather, the legendary epic filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille, and how she traveled with him on location from the moment she could dress herself. She is determined to carry on his legacy and share the man and his art as a filmmaker. And, speaking of art, Newport Beach artist Georgeana Ireland talks about her work, which she calls "romantic abstract expressionism." Having recently painted with master Mexican artist Vladimir Cora, as well as Matisse's grandson, Pierre Matisse, speaks to her craft. Scott Nelson, D.O.'s work in bio-identical hormone therapy–hormones that are chemically identical to those our body produces–will encourage you to know that with the proper hormone levels, you will feel better and return to how you used to feel. And, in Parting Thoughts we have a bow to baseball, from a mother who reminisces about her teenage son's immersion in the sport, as well as the family's, and what a joy it is. Enjoy our Good Times features, which highlight some great events around town, including the Henry Segerstrom Exhibition opening at South Coast Plaza's Jewel Court. It is closed now, but is a reminder that we all can make a difference in this great country of ours. I wish you a meaningful, joyful Fourth of July, filled with picnics and fireworks! Until next time,

I
Two Years and Growing!
t is amazing how your perspective on life and your career can change within an instant. A chance meeting, a phone call, a business connection, or unexpected health issues have the ability to drastically affect your life and your career path. I received an interesting phone call 32 months ago from my brother, and my life and career path will never be the same again. My brother wanted me to check out a family of magazines that was looking to grow their presence and circulation on a national basis. The owners of Lifestyle Publications, based in Overland Park, Kansas, were specifically looking to expand into major metropolitan markets and were very interested in southern California. Several phone calls and meetings later, I decided that Lifestyle Publications had a solid business model and proven results. I really liked its community-inspired and family-focused content, but also the extremely high quality of the finished publication. The ability to choose the postal carrier routes and demographic that I wanted to reach, plus the fact that it was directly mailed into homes on a monthly basis, was also a huge bonus. I chose Newport Beach as the community in which I wanted to launch the magazine because of its charm and reputation. That was 23 months ago, and Newport Beach Lifestyle was born with an editor, a photographer, several writers and me. My team was small, but they were effective and just what our new magazine needed. Since then, my team has grown and changed. We are fortunate to have had several new people join our team in the last few months. Ana Launes, our new vice president, brings us her vast marketing and promotional background, and has already made a

significant impact on the growth and stability of the magazine. Donna Bunce, our new editor, has been providing new and interesting community-inspired editorial content to the magazine since April. Her prestige and reputation in the community are invaluable. Add to them several new writers and photographers, and we are set to take Newport Beach Lifestyle to the next level. When we launched, we were the 12th magazine in the Lifestyle Publications family. There are now 25 magazines nationwide, and additional magazines moving toward launch. This July 2015 issue is now our 24th and closes out our second year of magazines here in Newport Beach. As you read this, we are now working on our Two-Year Anniversary Issue and are excited about what awaits us and the magazine in the next year. Our goal is to write about you, our families, our businesses and our history. We are Newport Beach’s only monthly community-inspired magazine that is directly mailed into your home. Our advertisers are local businesses that help to support the community by charitably giving both their time and trade, and they truly appreciate your trust and patronage. We are always committed to not only being a relevant and high quality publication, but also the community magazine of Newport Coast, Corona del Mar and Newport Beach. You can trust that our perspective and our focus on doing those specific things will never change.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE NEWPORT BEACH AREA?
The sunshine. I am a native Oregonian, and I got tired of the grey skies and rain. A number of my friends and collectors recommended the move, and I am thankful I did. DESCRIBE YOUR ART.
I call it “Romantic Abstract Expressionism.” I create from my imagination and emotion, usually to amazing music. My art is a melding of the genre “Romanticism,” a period of art during the late 18th century, and abstract expressionism, a movement around the time of my birth. My paintings feature very thick impasto oil paint and pigments, sometimes using semiprecious stones, including lapis, diamond dust and gold leaf. I am most passionate these days about creating large paintings. Currently, my favorite size is about 80’x60.’ Perhaps, it is a nod to the masters before me - most of the work I admire in museums are large works. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
The great masters before me are my inspiration. I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to see some of the greatest art in museums all around the world. I have spent countless hours with a notebook in hand dissecting details, layers of paint, glazes, and compositions of Monet, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, German Expressionism, and many others.
Georgeana Ireland with her painting, "Change of Heart." Photography by Neal Paris "Cataclismia"
WHERE DID YOU STUDY ART?
Living in a small town in Oregon I studied privately with teachers, as well as at many workshops with national artists. I consider myself autodidactic and, even with nearly 30 years as a professional artist, I continue to study. WHERE CAN PEOPLE VIEW YOUR ART?
I have a show right now at Fingerhut Gallery in Laguna Beach and Contemporary Fine Arts Gallery in La Jolla. I am represented by eight galleries across the U.S. A list is on my website: GeorgeanaIreland.com. WHEN IS YOUR NEXT SHOWING OR EXHIBIT?
I will be painting live at my show at Fingerhut Gallery on June 4 (First Thursdays Art Walk, Laguna Beach). I am also painting right now for a show in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the Bill Hester Gallery. WHAT ARE SOME EXCITING MOMENTS IN YOUR CAREER AS AN ARTIST?
Recently, I painted live with master Mexican artist Vladimir Cora at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. We started with a blank canvas and neither of us spoke the other’s language. We had to use the universal language of paint. The painting was then auctioned off at the museum’s annual gala. Marlene Alvarado made a short documentary of my experience that can be seen on YouTube. YouTube.com One of my greatest opportunities came about when a mutual friend introduced me to Pierre Matisse, grandson of Henri Matisse. I was shocked to get a call from him letting me know he really liked my art and offered to paint with me. Not long after, I had the most amazing opportunity to hang out with him and his lovely wife in Florida. We painted together and he shared many of his secrets, as well as tales of Salvador Dali and Picasso. I was honored later to join him and his wife in Moscow, Russia, for a large installation and show of his work. I forgot to mention he is 85 years young, and paints up a storm every day.

BERRY SKINNY MUFFINS
The picnic season has arrived. July has the honor of officially being National Picnic Month and National Blueberry Month. Yes, there is actually a month devoted to those powerhouse berries. The North American Blueberry Council proudly reminds us that more than 90 percent of all the world’s blueberries are cultivated in North America, with peak harvest in July. Packed with potassium, folate and vitamin C, blueberries can add a quick and colorful nutrition boost to traditional picnic sides. Blueberries get their blue color from compounds known as “antocyanins,” and recent university studies have shown that those antocyanins can help prevent cancer cells from forming. Naturally low in fat, with only about 80 calories per cup and practically fat free, blueberries are also loaded with fiber to keep you fuller longer. Just a handful can fulfill your daily fiber requirement. Plus, blueberries are a fabulous source of manganese, which helps bone development and assists in converting carbohydrates into energy, to keep you going strong all day at the picnic in the park.

What picnic is complete without the coleslaw? For a unique, reduced-fat twist on that iconic outdoor side dish, try adding blueberries! Berries add a splash of color and burst of sweetness, enhancing the flavor of the cabbage. To keep calories low, we’ve replaced traditional mayonnaise with a lighter combination of reduced-fat mayo and ranch dressing. To save time, simply replace the cabbage and carrot with pre-shredded coleslaw mixture from your grocer. This quick recipe can easily be made the night before and refrigerated; just fold in blueberries when ready to serve. INGREDIENTS:
1 head cabbage, shredded 1/2 cup red cabbage, shredded 1 large carrot, thinly sliced 1/2 large onion, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro 1 pint fresh blueberries (about 2 cups) 3/4 cup reduced-fat mayonnaise 1/2 cup reduced-calorie ranch dressing 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper INSTRUCTIONS:
In a large bowl, combine cabbage, carrot, onion and cilantro. In a small bowl, stir together mayonnaise, ranch dressing, vinegar, honey, salt, and pepper. Pour dressing over cabbage mixture; toss to combine. Gently fold in blueberries until coated with dressing. Serve immediately, or refrigerate overnight. If refrigerating, fold in blueberries when ready to serve. Yield: 8-10 servings. Per serving: Calories: 44; Fat 0.8g; Carbs: 9.2g; Protein 0.9g. Cost Per Serving: $.55. Raised by her grandfather Cecil B. DeMille, Cecilia DeMille Presley talks about her famous relative, one of the most dynamic producer/directors of all time. ARTICLE DONNA BUNCE PHOTOGRAPHY FROM CECIL B. DEMILLE: THE ART OF THE HOLLYWOOD EPIC
C Cecil B. DeMille directs Samson and Delilah with his granddaughter Cecilia looking on
Delilah (Hedy Lamarr) deprives Samson (Victor Mature) of his strength, Samson and Delilah, 1934
George Clooney, winner of the 2015 Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award, is presented the book, Cecil B. DeMille: The Art of the Hollywood Epic, by co-authors Cecilia DeMille Presley and Mark A. Viera/Photo: Patrick Prather, courtesy of Hollywood Foreign Press Association
ecilia DeMille Presley distinctly remembers being on the Samson and Delilah film set as her grandfather Cecil B. DeMille directed the soon-to-be colossal hit. Ten years old at the time, the loving granddaughter lived with her grandfather and grandmother, just up the street from her family’s home in Los Feliz, California. “I announced to my parents at age eight that I was going to live with grandfather and immediately walked to his house,” Presley says. “When I was old enough to dress myself, he never took a trip without me, which included the film destinations and film openings." It was in this epic world that “Pet,” DeMille’s affectionate name for her, grew up. “I was a set brat,” Presley says, “but I was never spoiled. Grandfather taught me that money was convenient, but it did not make the man. We all worked.” It seems the entire family was part of the literary/artistic world. According to Presley, DeMille’s father, Henry DeMille, was an accomplished playwright; his mother, Beatrice, an influential literary agent; and his brother, William, an established playwright. Cecil and Beatrice’s daughters, Cecilia (Presley’s mother) and Katherine (married to actor Anthony Quinn), were both actors, and William’s daughter was the famous dancer/choreographer Agnes DeMille. Cecil was blessed by his father, who was also a lay minister in the Episcopal Church, who read stories every night from the Old Testament, New Testament and chapters from history or a great novel. “Once you’ve been in that environment, there is no other as stimulating as the creative artists who inhabit that world,” Presley says. In 2014, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Cecil B. DeMille’s The Straw Man, the first feature film made in Hollywood, Presley collaborated with noted photographer/film historian Mark A. Vieira in creating the book, Cecil B. DeMille: The Art of the Hollywood Epic. The book is a treasure trove of storyboard art, concept paintings, images of costumes and artifacts, and spectacular still photographs from DeMille’s films. “The best way to describe the way in which grandfather worked was that he was a modern Medici,” Presley says. “He summoned the best artists he could find across the globe. After he did painstaking research on a film and worked with a team of writers to craft a script, he gave the script to his artists and left them alone.” Those creative renderings from DeMille’s 70 films, many of which are in the book, are works of art and constitute a unique art collection, for which Presley is the keeper. “When Mark Vieira called and said he wanted to do a book, I was thrilled, because it meant that I could share this art,” Presley says. Although Presley retains a large portion of the DeMille archives, much is kept with Brigham Young University’s impressive motion picture collections. Locally, Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts is the recipient of 187 rare photographs,
Moses (Charlton Heston), The Ten Commandments, 1956
original concept drawings and movie posters of DeMille’s work. After meeting Dodge College’s Dean, Bob Bassett, Presley believed in his dream of establishing a major film school at Chapman and was instrumental in getting it started. Today, it is one of the leading film schools in the country. And, of course, there is the legendary filmmaker’s amazing collection of 70 films to ponder, spanning nearly 50 years. Known to many as the “King of Hollywood Epics,” DeMille is probably best known for his religious epics, including both the 1923 silent and the 1956 version of The Ten Commandments (Presley chronicled the Egyptian trip making the film), 1927's The King of Kings, 1932's The Sign of the Cross, 1935’s The Crusades (with Loretta Young), and 1949’s Samson and Delilah (with Victor Mature and Hedy Lamarr - Presley called her the most beautiful woman she had ever seen). Other highlights include a series of American history films: The Plainsman and North West Mounted Police (both with Gary Cooper), The Buccaneer, Union Pacific (with Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea), Reap the Wild Wind (with John Wayne, Presley’s favorite actor), and Unconquered
(DeMille’s first talkie in 1929). Other film standouts include Cleopatra in 1934, starring the sultry Claudette Colbert, and The Greatest Show on Earth in 1952 (Presley traveled with the circus to do research for the film). It was a long and eventful journey for this Hollywood pioneer, from his partnership with Jesse Lasky, Samuel Goldfish (later Goldwyn) and Arthur Friend in the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913, which led to the founding of Paramount Pictures, to eventually launching Cecil B. DeMille Productions, Inc. It was quite the bio for the man who began his career directing the first feature-length movie in Hollywood to doing the monumental remake of his own The Ten Commandments in 1959 - who can forget Charlton Heston as Moses coming down from Mount Sinai with commandments in hand! In keeping with her role as preserver and keeper of the DeMille estate, Presley, a longtime Newport Beach resident with her beloved husband Randall Presley, who she lost in 2011, is Vice-Chairman for the National Film Preservation Foundation, a longtime benefactor to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and serves CONTINUED >

on the boards of the American Film Institute, Chapman University School of Film and Cinema, and UCLA’s School of Film and Television. In her spare time, she produces documentaries. How does Presley feel about her grandfather’s legacy? “I think it’s not so much the carrying on of his legacy as my feeling of sharing the man and his art as a filmmaker and the artists with whom he worked,” she says. Presley said she is also proud of the fact that her grandfather used native Americans to play native Americans for the first time. “He was a Republican, but a social liberal,” Presley says. “He championed women’s rights and hated bigotry.” There is no doubt Presley adored her grandfather and appreciated the closeness they shared. She reminiscies, saying, “When I was 11 or 12, I was sitting on a bench and thinking that I was one of the luckiest person’s alive.” That you were, Cecilia DeMille Presley, that you were. Celebrating Pageant of the Masters and Festival of Arts 2015 ARTICLE SARAH MOSQUEDA | PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL OF ARTS
T
he Pageant of the Masters is a local tradition that has a long history of making people happy, and with this year’s theme, “The Pursuit of Happiness,” expect to be even happier. “I remember seeing Pageant of the Masters as a child,” says Diane Challis Davy, director of Pageant of the Masters for the last 20 years. “I loved it back then.” However, Davy notes that the practice of living pictures, or costumed actors and models posed to recreate sculptures and works of arts, goes back even further than her memories of the show in the 1960s. “Living pictures have a long history dating back to Medieval Christmas seasonal parades and pageantry,” she says, “It started becoming a parlor amusement in 18th century France and then eventually got to the United States by the 19th century.” Living pictures made it to Laguna Beach by the 1920s. “The first time we had living pictures with the Festival of the Arts was 1933,” Davy says. Living pictures have appeared in the form of Pageant of the Masters every year since, with the exception of the years be28

tween 1942 and 1945, due to World War II. While the first shows ran for only a week, the modern season lasts eight weeks, running nightly this year from July 8 through August 31. As director, one of Davy’s responsibilities is determining the show’s theme, and, for 2015, she draws on the simple joy the pageant brought her as a child. “In the last year and a half I have become more concerned with the fact that so many peoples' lives are being swallowed up by technology, by phones, by devices and distractions and just constant noise in their lives. And, I thought, here is the Pageant, which is a show about people being very still. “
This year’s “The Pursuit of Happiness” theme explores the many things that bring us joy and make life worth living. (Hint: it’s not your iPhone.) “It’s a contemplative show," Davy says, "We want to encourage people to stop and take time to look at art, because we think it’s life-enriching and life-enhancing." This year, audiences can look forward to a first act that is almost exclusively American art. “We end act one very patriotically, talking about the origin of the phrase “pursuit of happiness,” and we have Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin and George Washington and some fun extras and special effects,” she says.

In the second act, the show investigates happiness on a larger scale. “Act two is very international, with a more global search for happiness, examining ways that all humanity is the same as far as their need for joy and happiness.” There will also be a new “builder” this year, or demonstration of how living pictures are assembled. “We have found an interesting way to incorporate video, so people get a sense of what happens behind the scenes," Davy says. The use of video is an example of how the Pageant has evolved greatly since its humble beginnings. It’s also an example of how technology has a place in the pageant, just not as a ringing cell phone. “Early pageants had no lighting, very simple backgrounds and not too much by way of technical artifice,” Davy says, “But, as the years went by, directors added more refined improvements–added things like lighting and three dimensional sets on rolling wagons–and, in the last decade, we have added digital projection to our show. Although it is an old-fashioned pastime, the living pictures are so popular, we keep making improvements.” As Pageant of the Masters has grown, so have the events surrounding it. “The Festival of Arts, founded one year earlier than the Pageant in 1932, is open for the eight weeks as well, with 140 artists exhibiting,” says Davy. Known as one of the nation's most highly acclaimed juried fine art shows, the Festival features the work of photographers, woodworkers, painters, jewelers, printmakers, and more, from all over Orange County, and it is a draw, not only for festivalgoers, but also for local artists. “Painting is kind of a lonely job, “ says Festival artist Scott Moore. “You come up with the idea and you stretch your canvas and everything is done in your studio, with not much interaction with the outside public.” But when summer comes, Moore says, he looks forward to the interaction with both other artists and the public. He also serves as president of the Festival of the Arts Foundation, and will participate in the juried show for the 37th time this sumCONTINUED >

mer. A renowned watercolorist and painter, Scott was encouraged to add surrealism to his repertoire after his experience with the festival, and he has found much success. “One of my very first summers, I took note of the art pieces that got people’s attention,” Moore says. “From that, I kind of got an idea of where my talent lies. I think that feedback through the years has made me change in a really good way.” Weekly events run with the Festival season. Daily art workshops for children, teens and adults are available for a moderate materials fee. Art Talks is a lecture series featuring a Festival artist each Thursday leading a discussion on different topics. Also, each Thursday, Kendall-Jackson sponsors Art, Jazz, Wine & Chocolate with chocolate and wine pairings and live jazz accompanying your art viewing experience. Concerts on the Green are Saturday afternoon concerts with the likes of Stray Cat’s Lee Rocker scheduled to perform this year. “And, on the final Saturday of our run, we have a Celebrity Concert Benefit,” Davy says. Tickets to the private red carpet event and concert featuring Grammy-winning, Oscar-nominated singer/songwriter Melissa Manchester on August 29 start at $40 and include admission to that evening’s Pageant performance. However you choose to experience Pageant of the Masters, Davy hopes you find a way to let art bring you happiness this summer. “We want people to stop and smell the roses,” she says, “That is where we start in our search for happiness–making a decision to turn off our phones and look at art for 90 minutes.”

here are three special days in Newport Beach each year when you can view an impressive array of 1,776 American flags fluttering in the breeze. The breathtaking sight happens in May on Armed Forces Day weekend, thanks to the men of the 89-yearold Exchange Club of Newport Harbor, who work tirelessly to make the three-day event meaningful to the community. The Field of Honor idea came about when Jerry Nininger, who co-chairs the event with Exchange Club of Newport Harbor’s immediate past President Bill Bechtel, visited an ex-

change club convention in Florida, where Colonial Flags had an impressive display of flags and ideas for fundraising. One of those fundraising ideas was the Field of Honor program honoring the military. “I brought the Field of Honor fundraising idea back to our club, and we decided to take it on as a project,” says Nininger, who was president at the time. “That was six years ago, and it has since become a well-known event in Newport Beach. I must say that the City of Newport Beach has been a tremendous support.” The three-day event is held at Castaways Park in Newport Beach each year, where there is room for the large U.S. flags to be displayed. For $45, a person can tie a yellow ribbon with a picture of their military loved one to a flag pole with their name, rank and branch of service, so it is visible throughout the three-day affair. After the event, the people making the tributes can take the flag and pole home with them. CONTINUED >

Field of Honor begins on Friday of Armed Forces weekend and features a program created specifically for youth. More than 800 5th and 6th graders are bused in from the Newport-Mesa School District for the educational event. This year’s event, on May 15th, unfortunately, had to be cancelled because it was rained out. It was to have featured a musical performance by the Newport Coast Elementary School Choir, Presentation of Colors by the Buena Park High School Army JROTC Color Guard, Sonora School’s Edward Whelan leading the Pledge of Allegiance, the singing of the National Anthem by Francis Scott Key’s great great grandson, 93-year-old San Clemente resident George Key, accompanied by the same Newport Coast Elementary School Choir, the Dedication of Service Military Flags by a group of local Girl Scouts, a Young Citizenship Essay read by Emma Goodman of Victoria School, US Army’s Col. Lee Reynolds’ keynote address, and the flag folding ceremony conducted by the same Buena Park High School Army JROTC Color Guard. Saturday’s program featured Nininger as the event’s master of ceremonies. The Presentation of Colors was executed by the Marine Corps Color Guard from Camp Pendleton, followed by the Orange County Fire Authority Pipes and Drums and the Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard. It was a grand moment, to be sure. A stirring National Anthem was performed by George Key and Danielle Jacoby of Fullerton Junior College. Also impressive was the leading of the Pledge of Allegiance by 97-year-old US Army Sgt. Margaret Barker, who served in World War II. Nininger introduced special guests Newport Beach Mayor Ed Selich and Colonel Lee Reynolds, US Army Reserve and military technical adviser for the movies, who both said a few words. The keynote address was delivered by Pastor Frank Orzio, USMC Ret., while a heartfelt Flag Folding Ceremony and Presentation in Honor of Navy Seal Matt Mills, killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, was backed up with a reading by Pastor Orzio, who then presented the folded flag to Mills’ grandmother Connie Murphy. The final day, Sunday, saw veterans available at the site to visit with any of the attendees who came to view and walk through the impactful flag display.
The effort netted $45,000 for the Newport Harbor Exchange Club. “Anything we can do to support the military families is money well spent,” Nininger says. Bechtel, the only member to serve twice as Exchange Club president, shares that the club contributes on average $240,000 each year to different projects. The club’s main thrusts include Americanism, Youth and Community Service. Besides Field of Honor in the Americanism category, the club strives to educate the community by placing “Freedom Shrines,” which are plaques of America’s great documents of freedom, such as the U.S. Constitution and Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, in such places as local schools, city halls and libraries. As to the Youth category, the club sponsors programs annually to students in high schools in the Newport-Mesa School District. Multiple scholarships are offered for Youth of the Year, a Young Citizenship Award, an award for excellence in football and scholarship, and Accepting the Challenge of Excellence awards to youth who have overcome unusual or exceptional circumstances. Under Community Service, the club recognizes community heroes in the Newport Beach and Costa Mesa police and fire departments. Bechtel, who served with the Costa Mesa Police Department for 30 years, first as a detective sergeant and later as director of the helicopter unit, thinks the club’s support is essential. Environmental projects include participating in the Newport Beach Back Bay Cleanup and helping out at the Oasis Senior Center. However, the club’s most impressive involvement has been with child abuse prevention. “We built the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center,” Bechtel says, “and we continue to support it with an annual movie benefit. Since 1983, we’ve donated more than $1 million to the center.” The members of the Newport Harbor Exchange Club certainly don’t let any grass grow under their feet. Its 62 members are committed and more than willing to do the work to make this community a better place. How impressive is that! NHExchange.org

Aging Got You Down? ARTICLE ANA LAUNES
M
en and women age differently, but when it comes to the effects of aging, they are very similar. Effects like memory loss, mood changes and lack of focus seem to have become widely accepted consequences of growing old. The majority of women, by the age of 50 have lost in between 30 to 35 percent of their estradiol, which is the most powerful form of estrogen, and probably have lost a lot more progesterone. The ratio of estrogen and progesterone in the body should be at least 200 to 1 in favor of the progesterone, according to Scott Nelson, D.O. of Newport Crest Medical Center. When an imbalance of this sort takes place, the dark side-effects of estrogen manifest. The most common side-effects are PMS, fluid retention, cramps, bloating, emotional instability, sleep problems and more. Bioidentical therapy will take care of these imbalances by resetting the right ratio in each woman’s case. Around the same age, men experience similar symptomatology, lack of focus, poor memory, sleeping problems as well as, mood changes, lower libido and rectal dysfunctions. In men, the main two hormones responsible for these changes are testosterone and the human growth hormone (HGH). The right levels of these two hormones guarantee that a 20-year-old man would feel like a 20-year-old 36

man. The normal range for testosterone goes from 1200 to 300. When an individual before his 30’s is used to levels around 800, and in his 40’s drops to 350, he feels like dirt compared to how he used to feel. In this case, the right hormone level management through bioidentical therapy will place the individual between 75 to 80 percent of their range for their age. What is bio-identical hormone replacement therapy? The term "bio-identical" means having the same molecular structure as a substance produced within the body. Bio-identical hormones are hormones that are chemically identical to those our body produces. “The need for them arises from the fact that our hormonal levels decrease over a period of time, just as naturally as part of our life cycling and aging,” says Nelson. He describes hormones as computer programmers or as the foreman in a work site, who provides structure and order helping everything to come together. In the same way, a cell needs to receive the proper instructions to function efficiently, and thus makes us feel good. For example, men’s testosterone levels range from 300 to 1200 at age 21, but from the age of 30 onwards, testosterone levels start decreasing at a yearly rate of 1.5%. Most men do not feel any changes until their 40’s and some of them not even until their 50’s. The main
symptoms are lack of focus, drive or memory slips. This symptomology is the result of an unbalanced hormonal level, and therefore, maintaining the correct level is a key for good body performance and feeling. In contrast, synthetic hormones are the result of today’s economic system. In this country, we cannot patent anything that exists in nature, and if we decide to do so, production cost is more than $600 million. “At that point, you have a patent that yields pretty good economic results," says Nelson. In order to avoid the economic burden of copying nature, we produce synthetic hormones. They are the exact replica of a molecule in nature but with a slight change. This minor change produces what we call side effects. These do not affect everybody in the same way, and, in many cases, can be dangerous. Synthetic hormones were tested in 2002 as part of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI). The study analyzed six million women and was based on estrogen plus progestin. This trial was stopped in July 2002 after investigators found that the associated health risks of the combination hormone therapy outweighed the benefits. Participants were followed for an average of 5.6 years. Substantial evidence emerged of an adverse effect on breast cancer risk in the context of an assessment that overall harms exceeded benefits for the combined hormone therapy group. By that time, approximately 40 percent of the participants had stopped taking study medication. Women who took estrogen plus progestin were at higher risk for heart disease, blood clots, stroke, and breast cancer, but at lower risk for fracture and colon cancer. (Menopausal Hormone Therapy and Breast Cancer 2012 by R. Chlebowski) On the other hand, a similar study was carried out in France at the Service d’Endocrinologie et Medecine de la Reproduction, Hôpital Necker in Paris. After the 10-year study (Climacteric 2002; 5: 322-340) by B. de Lignieres et. al., it was found that natural progesterone does not increase breast cancer risk. Numerous other studies have documented safety also in terms of other cancers, such as heart disease and cerebrovascular disease with bioidentical estrogens, progesterone and testosterone, when properly used.
WHAT IS BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY? The term "bio-identical" means having the same molecular structure as a substance produced within the body. Bio-identical hormones are hormones that are chemically identical to those our body produces. Bio-identical hormone therapy can be administered in different ways. Nelson recommends that women apply the prescribed cream on the inner part of the jaw, face cheeks and forehead area, alternating right and left side every day. These areas have a much higher absorption rate than other parts on the body where the skin is thicker. The absorption takes approximately five minutes. In the case of men, there are also creams available, but due to the erratic responses obtained, Nelson recommends injections. The cost of the treatment for women is in between $70 to $100 for a monthly supply and in the case of men, the cost of injections range from $80 to $145. The injections go for 20 weeks, and are self-administered. A male’s cream price is around $100 per month. The creams are produced by pharmaceutical laboratories and are pretty standardized around the country. Both the cream and testosterone for injections can be purchased at pharmacies. Nelson’s initial consultation is around $300, after which he will order a blood test. He collaborates with Direct Laboratory Services, LLC, DirectLabs.com which offers huge discounts for the battery of tests. For example, the “10 most important tests people over 40 should take each year” has a retail price of $1,874 and is offered at the discounted price of $309.
“Bio-identical hormone therapy is something that people know is available and that they can get their hormonal levels tested…but, really, they are coming to feel better and return to the way they used to feel before,” says Nelson. he Infiniti QX80 is a vehicle of contradictions, and it always leaves me with mixed feelings. I’ve never been a fan of the exterior styling, yet the interior beckons with soft leather and wood trim. The V-8 engine guzzles fuel, but it is extremely smooth and strong enough to tow 8,500 pounds. In summary, this full-size SUV shines from the inside out and delivers luxury on par with anything in its segment. Styling is certainly subjective. Infiniti updated the QX80 with a new grille that reflects the design language of the Q50 sedan. It’s an improvement, for sure, but the big nose is still imposing. The QX80 used to be called the QX56. The new name is part of Infiniti’s re-
vamped nomenclature. The SUV comes in rear-wheel, or all-wheel drive, with a direct-injection, 5.6-liter engine mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The 400-horsepower V-8 can tow up to 8,500 pounds. Fuel economy is rated at 14 miles per gallon in the city and 20 on the highway. Base prices start at $63,250 for rear-wheel drive and $66,350 for all-wheel drive. The rearwheel-drive test vehicle from Infiniti’s press fleet had a sticker price of $77,185. On the road, the QX80 felt as if it were gliding over the pavement, even with the optional 22-inch wheels, yet, the vehicle didn’t seem overly soft or mushy in turns. That’s a benefit of the

forward emergency braking does the same when it senses an imminent collision. The best part of the QX is the lush interior that has seating for eight, with a second-row bench seat. Stratford Burl wood trim was a tasteful accent to the wheat-colored leather interior of the dark blue test vehicle. The fit and finish are all that one expects in a full-size luxury SUV. Standard equipment includes a navigation system, a Bose stereo with 13 speakers and an Around View monitor that gives a birds-eye view of the vehicle. Moving object detection alerts the driver to approaching vehicles in parking lots. Around View was especially helpful in tight confines. The front seats could benefit from bottom cushions with deeper contours. The split-folding second seat had plenty of legroom, and the power-folding third seat was big enough to be usable. There is not much cargo space with the third seat in place. The test vehicle was equipped with the theater package that had 7-inch monitors in the back of each front headrest. Games or videos can be watched separately on either screen. PRICE The base price of the test car was $63,250. Options included the theater package, blind-spot monitor, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, upgraded Bose stereo with surround sound and 15 speakers, heated and cooled front seats, and 22-inch wheels. The sticker price was $77,185. WARRANTY Four years or 60,000 miles with

Flea and tick prevention keeps your pet healthy. Your pet won’t pick up tapeworms or have flea bites that cause itching misery and flea allergy dermatitis. In addition, you can help prevent diseases that fleas and ticks carry such as Lyme Disease, ehrlichia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tick paralysis. Give your pet flea and heartworm medication every 30 days.
$10 OFF Rattlesnake Vaccines
A bite from a rattlesnake is more common an occurrence than rabies and more likely to be fatal to your dog, so vaccinating him could make all the difference between life and death. Rattlesnake bites are twenty-five times more dangerous to dogs than to humans, and even if your dog survives a bite, he risks a high chance of life-time damage. The rattlesnake vaccination works by prompting your dog’s immune system to create more antibodies to help fight the venom found in the bite. Vaccines are different then an anti-venom, which is administered after a dog has been bitten. While vaccines are a preventative measure that encourages a dog’s body to create his own antibodies, anti-venom is the injection of another animal’s antibodies into your dog to help fend off the poison. *It is important to remember that rattlesnake bites are still a very serious incident, with or without the vaccination. Even if you have your dog vaccinated, it is crucial to take your dog to the veterinarian if he has been bitten by a rattlesnake

Parting Thoughts
The Boys of Summer WORDS ANNE POTTER RUSS
I
love baseball–not the major league stuff with all of the hoopla–I mean the teenage-level, (not even 3&2) real baseball on real grass. There really are differences, and I'm not talking about the fact that no one walks by my fold-out chair with a hot dog, peanuts and a cold beer. Recreation-league baseball is a treat that only the luckiest of parents get to enjoy, and I love watching it because my son loves playing it. There is something about a daily smacking of about 300 balls with one's bat that brings out the exhaustion (I mean happiness!) in a teenager with testosterone. And, that's just practice. Come game day, the real fun begins...for both of us. Him – "Where are my cleats/hat/glove/bat/water/hitting glove/ bag/sunflower seeds/socks???" Me – "Did I wear your cleats/socks/seeds last???" Him – "Mom, we're going to be late!" Seriously, I really do enjoy the season. He packs up whatever he can find that resembles baseball equipment, and I pack up my lounge chair (yes, with a foot-rest), my cooler, sunscreen, snacks, magazines, a blanket (for sibling/friend sitting), and a husband, and off we go. The grass is cool, the players are so happy to be hitting and catching and running... and the parents are so happy to be sitting, chatting, munching, and cheering.

Newport Beach Lifestyle | July 2015
We park about twelve yards from the field (for free), there is no concrete on which to burn our feet, the breeze blows and we position our chairs under the trees, or in/out of the sun...depending on the day. The boys never care what the weather is, as long as there is a bucket of balls and an opposing team that shows up every now and then. There's not one commercial playing in the background. No announcements, no megaplexes with snack stations, no numbers hanging from large fences ("Look for field 37, Harold!”). There aren't scads of other teams playing around us with 385 cars hiding ours in big parking lots. It's just us and the kids and the baseballs and the grass. The sun takes a little longer to set at the height of the season, and the parents marvel at how the boys have grown and how the team has improved, and how much they've learned since we started all of this. I don't have anything against big-league ball; it is a wonderful form of entertainment. But, for my money, it's a local ball field with a picnic and some friends I've made over the years in my comfy chair, and some worn-out teenagers with red cheeks at the end of the evening that gives me the biggest entertainment value in these parts.
