Editor's Letter

Welcome, Autumn! A

utumn conjures up images from my childhood, as I grew up in Indiana. The Midwest always started getting cooler in October, and the leaves blossomed into bright yellows, oranges, browns and reds. It was always a sight to soothe the soul, and, I must admit, I do miss that glorious panorama living in California. I do know, however, the leaves are changing colors in the mountains of our state, so that's why I felt justified showcasing a cover with pumpkins and autumn leaves. October is time to celebrate Oktoberfest, so beer celebrations are de rigueur this month. Also of note, is the craft beer movement here in Orange County, with several hot spots featured in our "Brewed to Perfection" story. October is also known as National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and John A. Giannone, DVM, medical director at Newport Animal Hospital, gives us some good advice about pet adoption. As a former chief of staff at two animal shelters and surgeon at a county shelter in New York, he knows what he is talking about. Several of our many nonprofits in the county are observing special benchmarks this year. National Philanathropy Day Orange County, hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, is celebrating its 30th anniversary of recognizing some amazing philanthropists in our midst. You will get a kick out of NPD Founder Doug Freeman's story of how he worked five years to get approval from Congress for President Ronald Reagan to declare it a national day of saying a collective 'thank you' to philanthropists around the country, and how that announcement actually turned out. Also commemorating an impressive 25-year mark is Working Wardrobes. Its amazing Founder Jerri Rosen's tenacity, grit, passionate dedication and a smile that totally engages, has made the successful nonprofit what it is today. Check out the Parting Thoughts feature. One of our famous Newport Beach icons is celebrating 50 years this year. Five Crowns opened on April 14, 1965, and was the fifth restaurant in the Lawry's chain of restaurants at the time. The site was initially purchased in the 30s by a lady wanting to build a replica of an English country inn, which she named The Hurley Bell. Writer Deirdre Michalski tells the whole story, including her personal love of the place since her childhood. Lastly, I hope you're gearing up for Halloween, whether purchasing pumpkins to carve, creating or purchasing costumes for you and/or your children to wear, or just enjoying the kids coming to the door on Halloween night. Remember, you could visit any one of the many spooky attractions listed in our Halloween calendar. So, enjoy the pumpkins and autumn leaves (if you're in the mountains!) and do have some fun on Halloween! Until next time,

Adopting a Dog

DR. JOHN A. GIANNONE, WHO HAS WORKED IN NEW YORK AS CHIEF OF STAFF AT TWO ANIMAL SHELTERS AND SURGEON AT A COUNTY SHELTER, GIVES SOME ADVICE ABOUT PET ADOPTION. ARTICLE DR. JOHN A. GIANNONE

O

ctober is National Adopt a Shelter Dog month. There are many factors that should be considered when setting out to adopt a dog. Although many successful adoptions are impulsive, there are many instances when they are not successful, and pets are returned. The adopting family has to do its due diligence before walking into a shelter. Let's first consider the immediate environment, which is the home–is there a yard, is someone at home? We have to be willing to change our daily routine and be available to do our daily walks. Of course, there are the routine visits to the veterinarian, but are we ready to accept the financial responsibility of an emergency or critical care? Sometimes, unknowingly, a family member may have an allergy to pet hair. The next criteria is the pet. Factors to consider would be size, gender, breed, a shedder or not, its age, and its existing medical health. Keep in mind that when it comes to breed selection that certain breeds or breed mix may be restricted from air travel and/or apartment residency. You can find this list from the airline website under traveling with a pet. The shelter does its own due diligence, making sure that the pet is not food aggressive, how it interacts with other dogs, cats, people and gender, and especially children. Some adoptive pets have been abused and are afraid of males and suffer from mental aggressive fear (fear biters). Fostering of pets is common now and provides a wonderful environment for the pet, and even the possibility of long-term stay with a loving family. Many breed specific rescues have previously owned pets that make terrific companions. There are so many opportunities to adopt a wide range of pets of different genetic backgrounds.

My advice is to take your time in your search. Speak to other people who have adopted and listen to their experiences. It is a commitment which can be quite rewarding for both the family and, of course, the pet, who is waiting for a comfortable, safe place to call its home. Good Luck! - Dr. John A. Giannone

A CRAFT BEER MOVEMENT ABOUNDS NEAR ANGEL STADIUM

Brewed to Perfection

Backstreet Brewery Company's tasting flight #1

22

O

ARTICLE JENN TANAKA | PHOTOGRAPHY DANIEL HARSADI

n a warm Sunday afternoon in August, my husband and I ventured inland to Anaheim. In the past, we spent many nights marveling at the nightly firework spectacles at Disneyland and cheered for the Angels at their namesake stadium, but now there’s another reason to visit the heart of Orange County. The beer. The search for good, locally brewed ales brought us to this fledgling mecca for craft beer snobs. Here, in the shadows of Angel Stadium, a movement is brewing. As curious imbibers, we decided to create our own brewery tour so we could explore this Wild West for beer aficionados. First, the parameters for this Anaheim pub-crawl: We selected three local breweries that have made great strides to start and elevate the craft beer experience. The rules: each brewery must have a dedicated tasting room. Also the location must be five miles or less from Angel Stadium. BACKSTREET BREWING COMPANY

Our first stop is the newly-opened Backstreet Brewing Company. Located just over a mile from the stadium, this small gem is tucked away in an industrial office complex. Plopped on the street out front is a small folded signboard. This is our only indication that the brewery is actually open. But the tiny sign does its job and points the way. As we enter, the brewery is clean with concrete accents. Large metallic tanks hold gallons of liquid that will soon become glorious craft beer. A row of fifteen glistening metal taps spout out Backstreet Brewing Company’s ample selection. As we saddle up to the bar, we notice two large flat screen TVs, both airing the Angels’ game. I chuckle as I look at the

Newport Beach Lifestyle | October 2015

packed stands. Every time the camera pans to the crowd, someone is drinking a beer. But, for sure it’s not going to be as tasty as the beer(s) I’m about to sip. In the next breath, I order a tasting flight, which is a reasonable $7 for four 4 oz. pours. The “taptender,” similar to a bartender, but in this case, someone who specializes in the perfect pour, suggests I taste a couple IPAs. I take her suggestion, but peer at the wall-mounted menu for my other two choices. When the master brewers ferment their beer, aroma, flavor, appearance and mouth feel are taken into account. I concentrate on harnessing my perceptions, as I taste the Tomahawk double IPA, then the Sixth from the Right IPA. Both beers’ subtle flavors might have been too nuanced for my palate. But, the other two beers–the Back Street Fuel Injected Coffee Oatmeal Stout and the Rita Red–stole the show. The stout reminded me of more flavorful Newcastle Brown Ale loaded with a bold coffee finish. It’s an ideal sipping beer that pairs well with a variety of flavors stemming from dark chocolate to pulled pork. On the other hand, the Rita Red, which is an American Amber red ale, is so crisp and easy to drink that I contemplate chilling a case for later. The Rita Red tastes of toasted bread with a smooth, caramel-like mouth feel and a bright citrus finish. 1884 S. Santa Cruz Street, Anaheim :: BackstreetBrew.com Located: 1.1 miles from Angel Stadium Drink: Rita Red Amber Ale Eat: The brewery hosts a revolving list of food trucks. Check the website for details. What’s new: The Backstreet Brewery tasting room will soon open its backyard space for alfresco day drinking.

NOBLE ALE WORKS

ANAHEIM BREWERY

Our next stop is Noble Ale Works, the hipster haunt of the craft brewery scene. Here, the beer names have a kitschy comic flair: Baby Gaga, Pistol Whip’d, Man’s Milk and Princess Peach’s Plumber Party all grace the taps when we visited that afternoon. Similar to Backstreet Brewery, Noble Ale Works is tucked away in an industrial, business park located in the Platinum Triangle. A large tin water tower emblazoned with an oversized knight’s shield stands proudly as we park in the crowded lot. The medieval decor runs throughout the main tasting room – from the dark tavern-style wooden menu perched above the taps to the pinewood vessels stacked behind the bar. The Noble Ale Works menu lists a dizzying amount of brews on tap. Just for the tasting flight, which is five 4 oz. pours for $10, there are twenty different options. This constant variety is thanks to Noble Ale Works’ master brewer Evan Price, who began his career by drinking his way through Europe. After tasting different concoctions from England, Ireland, Germany, and Belgium, Price began honing his craft. Stints at BJ’s Brewhouse and TAPS Fish House & Brewery refined his palate. Then in 2012, Evan took the helm as head brewer of Noble Ale Works. Price is credited as the mind behind many of the brewery’s unique beer experiments. One successful concoction is the Grapefruit Shandyland, which features a light-bodied, refreshing mouth feel flavored with hand-juiced citrus. The tart wheat beer goes down easily on a hot afternoon. But, the Princess Peach’s Plumber Party, which was supposed to taste like peach iced tea beer, left us desiring more stone fruit flavor. The SMASH A.L.S., which is brewed from a custom blend of Loftus Ranch hops blended with a German Pilsner Malt, packs an aromatic punch of cool melon, and cedar spiced with pepper. The SMASH A.L.S. proceeds also go directly to the Ales for ALS foundation that funds research for Lou Gehrig’s disease. 1621 S. Sinclair Street, Anaheim, 714.634.2739 :: NobleAleWorks.com Distance: 1.4 miles from Angels Stadium Drink: The Grapefruit Shandyland or the SMASH S.L.S., while it’s still available. Eat: No food served. Noble Ale Works' menu

Anaheim Brewery blends the city’s history with great craft beer. The tasting room space features a 30-foot-long, vintage wooden bar flanked by a black and white photo capturing turn-of-the century cowboys. Walking into the clean concrete space, the bar appears like it belongs in a saloon from an old western film. This all makes sense once you learn that the bar was in fact salvaged from a nearby watering hole called the Covered Wagon Saloon that shuttered in 2002. The original Anaheim Brewery opened in 1870 and was expanded in 1888 to include a large brick building that brewed the then-famous Anaheim Beer. When the country’s Prohibition laws closed the taps in 1920, it took more than 90 years for the bar to breathe new life. In 2010, Barbara and Greg Gerovac reopened the brewery at the Anaheim Packing Plant. Located behind Umami Burger, the brewery features a relaxing outdoor space lined with picnic tables. The tasting flight is the best deal for new imbibers – $9 for four 4 oz. pours, plus a souvenir glass. The go-to brew is the Anaheim 1888, the location’s flagship beer. It’s fashioned after the style of ale brewed at the original Anaheim Brewery. The Beer Tender, as they’re dubbed at Anaheim Brewery, also recommends an Anaheim Pilsner. “The most recent batch is great,” she says. The pilsner’s delicate, slightly floral aroma is crisp and refreshing. While I still preferred the Anaheim 1888, the pilsner will quench the thirst on a balmy OC afternoon. The surprisingly nuanced Peerless Porter is a dark brown ale with rich caramel and roasted coffee notes with a mellow acidic finish. As another nod to history, the brewery named the porter after the Peerless Saloon that operated downtown before Prohibition. 336 S. Anaheim Blvd., Anaheim, 714.780.1888 :: AnaheimBrew.com Distance: 3.5 miles from Angels Stadium Drink: Anaheim 1888 Eat: Food trucks, such as the Kala truck that serves artful Mexican food, park out front on Tuesdays. For the rest of the week, try the Anaheim Packing Plant located across Farmer’s Park, which features an artisanal food court that should satisfy your food needs. Anaheim Brewery's tasting flight #2

H

ealth-related quality of life and well-being are new topic areas for the healthy people of today. The first concept is a multi-dimensional concept associated with physical, mental, emotional and social functioning. It goes beyond direct measures of population, health, life expectancy, and causes of death, and focuses on the impact health status has on quality of life. On the other hand, well-being is a related concept, which measures the positive aspects of a person’s life, such as positive emotions and life satisfaction. Well-being is a relative state where one maximizes his or her physical, mental and social functioning in the context of supportive environments to live a full, satisfying and productive life. Dmitriy Tarverdoff, president of Dmitriy’s Dental Studios, and his talented team of technical clinicians, have applied the lessons of Santana/Hindu, tantric/yogic traditions and other belief systems to the world of cosmetic dentistry. These systems are based on a basic unit of energy called chakra. The chakra is responsible for transmitting and receiving physical, emotional and spiritual energy. The body contains a total of seven major chakras, which are located along a central axis. The system’s ultimate objective is to attain energy balance among all of them.

This is the way by which any of us can achieve a health-related quality of life and well-being. Furthermore, chakras are associated with specific areas of the body, as well as to fixed colors and semi-precious stones. For example, the first chakra is located at the base of the spine and is represented by the color red or black and the semi-precious stone, black tourmaline. This stone helps to release stress. The second chakra is located below the navel, and its color is orange or blue-green. One of the stones associated with this chakra is the carnelian, which aids with tissue renewal and, therefore, helps with rheumatism, fever and skin problems. The third chakra is located in the solar plexus area, and is represented by the color yellow. Some of the stones associated with this chakra are yellow jasper, golden calcite and citrine. Citrine has the healing power of dispelling negativity and is known to be good for stomach and digestive problems. The fourth chakra is located in the center of the chest and is represented by the colors pink or green. Some of the gems associated with this chakra are green aventurine, pink rubellite, tourmaline or rose quartz. The rose quartz can alleviate kidney and spleen

issues, cancer, as well as improving mood by filling the wearer with positivity. The fifth chakra is represented by the blue color and the stone angelite. This stone has provided great results when used in the treatment of thymus. It reduces throat inflammation and balances the thyroid. Other properties are repairing and soothing tissues and blood vessels. The sixth chakra, also known as the “third eye,” is located above the eyebrows and is represented by indigo color and the stones azurite, sugilite and lapis lazuli. This last stone is known to relieve pain and is particularly helpful with migraine headaches. Finally, the seventh chakra is on the top of the head, and is violet or a golden white color. It is represented by the following stones: amethyst, white topaz, and white calcite. Amethyst is known to boost hormone production and tunes the endocrine system and metabolism in addition to strengthening the body to fight cancer.

Dmitriy’s Dental Studios cares about the well-being and quality of life of its clients. For this reason, they only use bio-compatible materials and have added the new holistic approach. They integrate all this ancient knowledge into creating unique and customized pieces by incorporating the semi-precious stones within bridges, crowns and other products. Tarverdoff says, “My vision became clear to me. How I could help the patient find solace, peace, health and wellness through the use of semi-precious stones, which govern different parts of the body that are in desperate need of healing.” Health, quality of life and well-being have become a major focus in health research. ou can’t resist her smile. She lights up a room. To be honest, you can’t help but smile back and pretty much help Jerri Rosen, founder/CEO of Working Wardrobes, with whatever she might need. This remarkable lady doesn’t need to ask for help. “I open up the dialogue to the possibility and the excitement of where we are going or what we need, and people respond,” she says. “I think people can find in volunteer service the personal Prom Eve growth and development that they may not have the opportunity nt Janet Na with Working W to experience in their work lives.” dler and a client, 20 rdrobes voluntee r 15 Rosen has been sharing her excitement for 25 years at Working Wardrobes. What’s interesting about her involvement with the nonprofit is that this Uniontown, Pennsylvania-born lady never intended work t with Los Angeles ess Graduation Even cc Su r ree Ca 's en M and client, 2014 in the nonprofit world, having graduated from Arizona State University ner Michael Ferrera men's clothing desig with a double major in business and English. As a graduate of Thunderbird Graduate School in international management (learning French along the way), she had plans to live and work in Europe. Marriage changed those plans, when her husband took a job in New York City, but after losing his job, the couple sublet their apartment and traveled in Europe for four months in a Volkswagen they bought at the Volkswagen factory in Germany. 26

Following a move to Los Angeles in the mid-1980s because her husband wanted to pursue a career as a stockbroker, the marriage eventually ended in divorce. A series of jobs led Rosen to group sales at Magic Mountain, marketing at Del Taco, Wendy’s International and Carl’s Jr. before she decided to start her own ad agency, J.L. Rosen & Company, in 1990. “My longtime company focused on planned giving and development campaigns for nonprofits, and I was drawn by the personalities in the community,” she says. That same year, 1990, Rosen and five friends decided to do something about the growing domestic violence victims in Orange County and set out on a mission to help those in need. They all had day jobs and after 5 p.m., they gradually organized an event, which Rosen said took them a year to plan. After gathering clothing and accessories and storing them in Rosen’s office, they held the first-ever Day of Self-Esteem™. Serving 67 women from six shelters was a life-changing experience. “We had no idea what we were doing and had no template to go by,” Rosen says. “But, when I think back to those years, it was about tapping into people’s expertise and talents.” It was going to be a one-time only event, but helping survivors of domestic violence get back on their feet and back to work became a mission as the foundation for Working Wardrobes was being laid. “How can you not change personally when you have a hand in helping change people’s lives?” Rosen asks. They got everything donated and it always seemed the right people, opportunities and donations came when they were needed, according to Rosen. Soon, they were serving 167 women the second year and 267 the third. “We just had to do more for more people,” Rosen says. The events became larger and larger, a board of directors was formed and fundraising became a reality. By that time, Working Wardobes’ first retail store, The Hanger, opened in Tustin and Rosen, wanting to increase the client base, expanded to helping men as well as women reclaim their dignity and return to work. The partnership with George Zimmer and the Men’s Wearhouse, which began in 1997, introduced the Men’s Day of Self-Esteem, and, later, in 2000, the nonprofit reached out to emancipating and at-risk youth. A separate young adult’s Day of Self-Esteem was held, and an extensive series of life and career skills workshops were developed that included goal-setting, career coaching and presentation skills. For those first 12 years, Rosen, who was now sole owner of the ad agency, included Working Wardrobes as her ‘pro bono’ client and volunteered there after-hours. Finally, in 2007, she felt she had to close her agency. “I felt I had to focus and work full-time to serve more people,” she says. With Rosen’s time now totally dedicated to Working Wardrobes, the nonprofit moved forward to serve clients year-round with a contract to serve the welfare-to-work population. Then, concerned again

about keeping emancipated teens making better choices for their lives, Rosen began a young adult program. That led to another need for your girls that had no funds to buy prom dresses. Rosen introduced Cinderellas for Life, an event to help young ladies from low-income families prepare for prom. After seeing the impact it made on the girls, it was expanded to include young men as well and in 2011, Working Wardrobes created Dream Girls and Distinguished Gentlemen to provide prom dresses and tuxedos, as well as accessories, to young men and women from low-income families. Along with that, the event helps teens plan for the future with workshops on etiquette, self-esteem and goal setting. The really good news is that the remaining dresses are donated to female Marines and military wives so they can attend the U.S. Marine Corps Ball at Camp Pendleton every year. It was in 2012 that Working Wardrobes expanded its ability and resources to help veterans reintegrate back into civilian life with the guidance of Harry Humphries, retired Navy Seal. Although the nonprofit had been serving veterans for eight years, a new scope of services was introduced called VetNet, a safety net for veterans. It is designed to provide all the services a vet needs to make the successful transition between military life and the civilian work force. It is a program close to Rosen’s heart. “The work with our vets is so powerful and satisfying,” she says. “They are remarkable human beings and deserve our support.” Since VetNet launched three years ago, more than 1,100 vets have been served through the program with job training, placement and follow-up. VetNet uses an integrated case management approach to directly link clients to supportive services available through the Working Wardrobe partnerships. Today, Working Wardrobes is a thriving organization located in Costa Mesa (Rosen told me in the early years they moved 15 times in two years, due to space being donated and then retrieved), that has served more than 80,000 clients emerging from life crises by providing services. Annually, 5,000+ clients achieve self-sufficiency and re-enter the workforce through the nonprofit’s Career Success Institute, which provides career training and life skills workshops on resume writing, interviewing, job searching, financial literacy, even offering certification in customer service and retail sales through a partnership with the National Retail Federation. What started as a Day of Self Esteem is now called Career Success Graduations and are exciting events, which draw hundreds of volunteers, who Rosen says are the mainstay of Working Wardrobes. “I know we’ve changed countless lives over the years, but I think it’s our volunteers who have been inspired and whose lives have been changed so deeply,” she says. “And, mine too.” Along with the volunteers, Rosen lauds the board of directors, the generous corporate and individual donors and a special new group of women supporters called the Smart Women, who help support client services by attending Fashion for Breakfast events or becoming annual members, who enjoy quarterly Fashion for Breakfast events. “I am very humbled by the people I’ve met and how dedicated they’ve been in making my work a reality,” Rosen says. Volunteers also work in the Hanger Boutiques, two upscale resale shops, two outlet shops, and two thrift shops. Clients get onthe-job customer service training and build their resumes, and the shops provide for more than 40 percent of the organization’s budget. As to the 25-year mark, Rosen says, “This work is very joyful, and even though we’re working with people dealing with challenges, we’re helping them get much closer to success, so we have much to celebrate.” Jerri Rosen I was surprised to learn that the tenacious workaholic is actually talking about retiring. “I am going to take the time to chart the course for the second 25 years and to plan for my succession with our board of directors,” she says. “I want to be respectful of a new CEO, but I want to be available, as needed, as founder.” And, as to this remarkable woman’s real motivation for her work, she says, “I actually believe I have a responsibility to do this. I think when we have talent and a skill set, we must do good in the world.” WorkingWardrobes.org

t was 7:30 in the morning. I was stretched into downward dog, and India’s saffron sun was already beginning to melt everything beneath it when a fight broke out between a splendid peacock and a pair of green parrots. The scuffle, which involved flailing of tempers and feathers, broke the serenity of the moment and even Das, our yoga and mediation instructor at the Oberoi Rajivilas Resort in Jaipur, collapsed into laughter. This was my last day in India and, after a week, I already knew that the unexpected is always expected and nearly always welcome in India. My mother joined me on this trip to the Golden Triangle, an area in northern India encompassing Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. We began in Delhi, where the whoosh of India and its famed symphony of sights, sounds and smells seized us the moment we arrived. We paused for a quick photo op at one of the city's proudest monuments, India Gate, a landmark arch erected in honor of the joint

"They are the kings," declares our driver, swerving out of the way of a white Brahman bull as we pulled into our sleek high-rise hotel, where we were greeted with fresh garlands crafted from marigolds. The next day we drove two hours to Agra, home of the Taj Mahal, one of the wonders of the world. We holed up overnight at what surely must be its own wonder of the world, the Oberoi Amarvilas, a luxury hotel where every single room has a view of the Taj. In the morning, my mom and I beat the heat by arriving at the Taj Mahal by 7:30 a.m. when the resident monkeys outnumbered the visitors. Emperor Shah Jehan commissioned this masterpiece of a mausoleum in 1632 for his beloved wife,

late 19th century, and the Rajasthani royals had the city's buildings painted pink in honor of his favorite drink, rose. The city is India's jewelry capital, and small shops with cramped windows belie the array of gems within. Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan, a state with a princely reputation, and we paid tribute to it by visiting galleries of gold-trimmed royal robes at the City Palace, where a branch of the royal family still lives. But our favorite part of Jaipur had to be the Amber Fort, a 16th century sandstone structure that towers above the town. Gripping hard to a pink metal basket, my mom and I steadied ourselves atop a lumbering elephant as we rode up a steep incline. To keep from tumbling to the embankment below, we mimicked the movements of our elephant driver, who, with a dusty crimson turban snug on his head, swayed to the rhythm of the elephants’ gait. We dismounted within the fortress walls amid a rogue moneychanger, panting stray dogs and a snake charmer, who coaxed a shimmying cobra from a woven basket. Although visitors can fly between cities, we were glad we’d chosen to hire a driver instead. The Golden Triangle is ripe with extraordinary monuments, palaces, temples and tombs, but the journey between them proved every bit as fascinating as the sites themselves: rustic farmyards thick with corn; sad migrant tent cities where the only running water is what flows in the gutter; women in colorful saris navigating taut paths through medieval markets; gleaming high tech university campuses. There is no one India. There are a multitude of Indias that slap up against one another. On our final day, we sank into the backseat watching the jagged hills of Jaipur disappear into the distance, as we motored back toward Delhi. Horns were still honking, buskers were hawking, teems of people vied for pavement with a steady stream of camels, donkeys, cows and dogs, but this time I saw myself less as spectator and more as a part of the symphony. While we idled at a light, a mustachioed man crammed into a tuk-tuk, turned to me his hands in prayer and mouthed “Namaste.” I returned the salutation before the flow of the traffic separated us and propelled our car forward into the sea of chaos I'd grown to love.

I

t took Doug Freeman 40 trips to Washington, D.C. in five years and 4,000 letters to get the job done, and in 1986, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November 15th as National Philanthropy Day. This November, according to the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), 130 communities across the U.S., Mexico and Canada will honor those who represent the spirit of giving in their regions. This man’s journey to set aside a special day to recognize the great contributions philanthropy makes to society began long ago. “My family didn’t have wealth,” Freeman says. “My parents struggled to provide for their four children. But I vividly remember the commitment they made to us and the lessons they taught us about caring and compassion.” Born in Los Angeles, Freeman says he remembers as early as 15 years of age thinking that that he led something of a charmed life, with wonderful parents and siblings and a great schooling, and he felt a responsibility to do something important. He volunteered as a camp counselor for the YMCA in high school, and that is where, he says, he was taught generosity. But, it was during his freshman year at Stanford that he really got rolling. “I remember sitting in the freshman convocation surrounded by the most incredible people, and then there was me," he says. "I’m thinking, 'There’s no way I should be here.'” Freeman says he left the meeting and walked to the front of the campus, where there is a beautiful grove of eucalyptus trees, and he sat down. “I’m thinking that I have to do something so they don’t think they made a mistake and send me back to some community college,” he says. “So I decided I was going to start a big brothers program. This was long before Big Brothers/Big Sisters and other organizations like it were around.” Freeman knew that East Palo Alto was filled with economically deprived families and that there was an underfunded YMCA nearby, but he had to start somewhere, so he found kids there with either no parents or parents that needed help with their teenage children. “I started the big brothers program at Stanford and soon we had dozens and dozens of kids in the program,” he says. “I had a little brother for the four years I was there. We didn’t call it a nonprofit. It was just a bunch of guys and gals who wanted to work in the community. I realized then that I could have an impact on the lives of troubled children, and I just never stopped.” Freeman ended up marrying Lynn Freschl, his high school sweetheart, whom he met when he was 15 and Lynn was 14. After law school at UCLA, he went on to build a respected law firm (Freeman Freeman and Smiley) and practice tax and estate planning in Los Angeles and later, Orange County. His commitment to philanthropy has been nothing short of amazing over the years and continues unabated to this day. Today, he serves as the executive vice president at First Foundation Bank, where he oversees and directs its philanthropic initiatives, is active in charities throughout Orange County, and serves on the boards of two public charities and four private foundations.

But, back in 1981, Freeman was in Minneapolis at the Walker Art Museum, where he was asked to speak on philanthropy. He knew the museum was one of the great museums in the country, and the audience was made up of the major supporters and donors to the institution. As he looked out over the audience, he remembers thinking that Minneapolis-St. Paul community was one of the most generous in the country, so he said, “Thank you. I just wanted to say thank you to all of you, in part, because of what you do for the Walker and for this community, but, largely, because of what you do for the rest of us around the country. You set the bar very high. It’s very inspiring, and you’ve challenged us to do better. And, so, today, I say, 'Thank you.'” He then proceeded with his talk. Later, on the flight home, Freeman thought to himself, “We don’t say thank you enough–as a community, as a nation, as an organization.” Freeman used the four-hour flight to write a letter to Ed Meese, the recently appointed Chief of Staff for newly-elected President Ronald Reagan. “I suggested that we should have a date to honor and celebrate American philanthropy, a unique part of our culture,” Freeman recalls. “I didn’t know Ed Meese, but I knew a guy who knew a guy, and I thought I could get the letter delivered that way.” It was February, 1981, and Freeman says he heard absolutely nothing. “I wasn’t surprised, but I was disappointed,” he says. Three months later, Freeman was part of a group conducting a two-day event in Orange County at the Newporter Inn (now known as the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach) to discuss philanthropy in Orange County, California and the nation. The audience was filled with donors, fundraisers and executives from major nonprofits. He had invited Lyn Nofziger, President Reagan’s chief political adviser, as the keynote speaker. Freeman recounts a conversation they had: “Later, when I took him to the airport, he said to me, ‘Doug, I’m very impressed with the day and with the people of Orange County. I like what you guys are doing. Is there anything I can do to help?’ I had the letter to Ed Meese in my pocket and whipped it out so fast he couldn’t finish his sentence!” Two weeks later, Freeman received a phone call to ask if he could be in Washington, D.C. for a meeting at the White House, where he was introduced to the recently appointed head of the White House Office of Private Sector Initiatives, former Congressman Jim Coyne.

“On behalf of Ed Meese, he said to me that the concept was great and they’d love to help, but there was nothing they could do other than to wish me well. My task, if I chose to proceed, was to get a bill passed through Congress. Coyne said he would do what he could to bring the President to that event.” Freeman knew to do it he needed to build support in the nonprofit community, so he approached what was then known as the National Society of Fundraising Executives (NSFRE), run by President Dick Wilson. “Together with Dick and another 35 high-powered organizations, we formed an organizing committee,” Freeman says. “The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the National Association for Hospital Development (NAHD) both joined with me.” That step began the five-year journey for Freeman. Not only was he responsible for obtaining congressional approval for what was to be called National Philanthropy Day, but he had to raise the money to fund those efforts. “It cost $250,000 a year to pull it off. I had to ask for money so that I could have a day to say thank you,” he says, smiling. “However, I met some amazing people, who understood what we were trying to do, and they funded it.” Early on, Freeman “knew a guy who knew a guy” and cold-called Marvin Hamlisch and asked him to compose an official song for the day, which turned out to be “Now More Than Ever,” and Johnny Mann of the famed Johnny Mann Singers agreed to record it– both men doing it gratis. Three years after NPD was officially announced, realizing the effort needed a permanent home, Freeman asked Wilson if NSFRE would accept that responsibility, and it did. Congressional approval was finally obtained, and the official announcement by President Reagan was scheduled for November 14, 1986. The proclamation named the following day, November 15, the official National Philanthropy Day, with the understanding that communities around the country could celebrate whatever day they chose. “At the White House ceremony, I had the privilege of introducing the President,” Freeman says. “The President began his talk with the formal announcement of National Philanthropy Day and he spoke about the history and importance of philanthropy in America. I was struck by the fact that there were 30 to 40 members of the press in attendance who weren’t paying much attention or taking notes. There were no photos being taken. They were pretty much just watching until the President transitioned his talk to CONTINUED >

say, ‘and now, I would like to talk to you about …,’ and all of a sudden, the pens came out and cameras started rolling.” The President then began to discuss his intention to launch an investigation into the Iran-Contra affair. With amusement, Freeman reflects, “I believe the only thing anyone really remembered of that day was Doug Freeman was at the side of President Reagan when the President announced the Iran-Contra investigation. More than five years of working on behalf of philanthropy melted into the Potomac. I received more calls and letters from friends and acquaintances who wanted to know if I was a CIA agent than from those congratulating me for passing a bill through Congress!” As it turned out, Orange County was one of the first communities in the country to celebrate National Philanthropy Day, now celebrated in three countries. And, true to its commitment, AFP has hosted each one. Freeman is especially grateful to AFP for that support. Freeman has attended many NPDs in different cities over the years, and he is always inspired. Following a National Philanthropy Day, Freeman relates, “I think one of the best stories is from a gentleman from Orange County, who I knew to be extremely generous with his time and resources. He said to me, ‘I never knew how little I had done until I stood in front of people who had done so much more.’" After 30 years of saying ‘thank you,’ Freeman has this to say: “It’s extremely heartwarming to commemorate the personal commitments of women, men, children and organizations, who truly sacrifice their time and treasure for the benefit of others. So, yes, I think National Philanthropy Day has done what it was intended to do. And, I will never forget I got here because other people paved the way.”

BEAUTIFUL SMILE Q&A It's never too late to have a beautiful smile.

I have never had great looking teeth. Can veneers help the shape, uneven size AND the color of my teeth?

Yes! Many people overlook just how many issues can be addressed by veneers. Not only can you brighten your smile but you can also adjust the size of your teeth to compliment the shape of your lips and create a beautiful smile.

I just had my braces removed and I still have spaces between my teeth. I also have white and brown stains on my teeth which make me feel self-conscious. What can I do to get the perfect natural looking smile? When braces are in place bacteria tends to accumulate easier, creating a breakdown in the enamel. This breakdown causes discoloration and pitting in the enamel surface of the tooth. The spacing and discoloration can be easily addressed with veneers or all porcelain crowns. Together we can create a treatment plan to give you the natural looking smile you have been looking for.

ucked quietly into a clean white office building on Pacific Coast Highway is the Corona del Mar shop of Engel & Völkers. The international real estate agency with 55 North American shops has distinguished itself with its “white glove style of service.” Founded in 1977 in Hamburg, Germany, E&V began as a specialty boutique agency providing high-end real estate services to wealthy European investors in search of assistance from experts who were highly professional and maybe even, more importantly, discreet. They quickly earned a reputation for unparalleled service and strength in the market place. E&V opened its first international shop in Majorca, Spain, in 1990. Today, 25 years later, the company has grown into a massive global network of more than 5,800 real estate advisors in 39 countries that spans six continents. They now have offices in the major international real estate markets, including Dubai, Paris, Rome, Hong Kong, London and New York City. As they grew they defined and perfected their “white glove style of service.” Not only did they invest in maintaining the same overall look and feel of their successful shops in Germany, but they also developed technology, tools and systems that allowed them to expand without compromising their quality and the highest levels of service. Their successes led to not only a greater demand but also a brand that continues to gain in reputation and recognition. 44

Newport Beach Lifestyle | October 2015

E&V entered the U.S. and North American market in 2006. Anthony Hitt was selected to lead the effort of expanding the brand in the U.S., as well as ensuring consistency in the service and quality being experienced worldwide. Hitt assembled the leaders in the industry to help establish Engel & Völkers’ North American presence. With this leadership team and a talented staff of experts in market development, technology, marketing, communications and brokerage services in place, E&V has grown into a force in the North American real estate marketplace. THE VISIONARY

Christian Völkers, founder and CEO of the firm, hosted the annual Engle & Völkers Polo Cup on July 31-August 1 at his “Son Coll” estate in Mallorca, Spain, from which guests enjoyed the spectacular surroundings, including overlooking vineyards and the Mediterranean. More than 500 employees from the global network attended the event in which the company had a lot to celebrate. The firm achieved in the first half-year of 2015 overall commission revenues of €181.7 ($202.7) million. This represents a 36.5 percent increase in turnover in comparison with the same period the previous year. It also reflects the group’s continuation on its course of growth. “Our strong expansion strategy within and outside of Europe is having a positive impact,” says Sven Odia, Co-CEO of Engel & Völkers AG.

E & V CEO North America Anthony Hitt, right, with other E&V executives at a recent U.S. opening

This substantial growth can be attributed to the healthy state of the real estate economy and the strong presence of the brand–particularly in Germany, Spain, Italy, North America and Switzerland. Christian Völkers is a passionate polo player. He, together with his friend Thomas Winter, Germany’s top polo player, and the E&V Licensee Partner Rackham Schröder, decided to found a professional polo school. The idea was born at the Engel & Völkers Polo Cup on Majorca. Land Rover was quickly won over as a strong partner. At the Polo School, beginners have a chance to discover the fascinating sport, while advanced players can perfect their game and improve their handicap. Christian Völkers’ vision is the company’s vision. The company recognizes its duty to act in a socially responsible way. As E&V has stated, “We cannot fail to see the hardship and adversity in our world, and it is our moral duty to provide help where it is most needed.” For this reason, in October 2008, a primary school project in Togo, West Africa, was actively supported, and the company aimed to finance its construction. Today, a second building has been erected and officially opened in November, 2014. The school has room for a total of 600 students. The E&V Charity makes a contribution to the sustainable development of the project and covers all running costs for the school operation.

can be seen in six different continents. This multiplies the possibilities of generating transactions (sell/buy) exponentially, representing an extremely relevant competitive advantage to be considered by any investor. Furthermore, Santaniello Affiliates has access to Engle & Völker’s aviation charter. From a selection of around 4,000 aircraft, ranging from small propellers to large super jets, Santaniello Affiliates can guide you and help you to identify the best options and opportunities, i.e. when chartering is no longer economically efficient because the annual flying hours are over 150. A rule of thumb tells us that shared ownership or just ownership is the way to go. At this point in time, the team can be extremely valuable at providing great assistance. They can help you to analyze opportunities for aircraft investment, aircraft financing (including operating leases) and aircraft operating-cost budgets and calculations. Likewise, Santaniello Affiliates can help you explore the world of yachting. The team works closely with the client and with the support of a global database, and targeted marketing measures can help you achieve your goals. Santaniello Affiliates shares the same values of the brand that they represent, so a portion of their commissions goes toward helping fund handicapped athletes through the E&V Special Olympics campaign. E&V North America is a proud partner of Special Olympics through its campaign, Play Unified. The campaign was launched to inspire and mobilize youth around the world to connect with people with intellectual disabilities and create more inclusive communities, leading to a more respectful world for everyone. Five Crowns' early days

An Icon Celebrates 50! I

WORDS DEIRDRE MICHALSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY FIVE CROWNS

n 1904, Corona del Mar was christened “Crown of the Sea.” At that time, this small enclave was nearly a two-hour drive from Los Angeles and large stretches of Orange County were completely undeveloped. A major breakthrough in the village's growth came with the opening of Coast Highway from Oxnard to San Juan Capistrano, with silent movie stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. officiating at the 1926 celebration of the highway's opening. Now, Corona del Mar was at last accessible, albeit one lane, and Sunday drives down the coast became a favorite getaway for Los Angeles residents and from points even farther north. Matilda ("Tillie" Lemon) MacCulloch purchased the land in the early 1930s, where Five Crowns now sits. She began building a replica of an inn she had fondly visited in England. She named her establishment The Hurley Bell. (This was in honor of the inspiration–an inn called Ye Olde Bell, dating back to 1135, and located at Hurley-onThames, just outside London.) MacCulloch was fascinated with replicating that English tavern. The construction was completed in 1936, and she and her daughter Marguerite lived in the house for four years. Later, it was converted to a restaurant, an inn, and in the 1940s, it became a popular hideaway for Hollywood celebrities. After Matilda’s passing in 1948, her daughter Marguerite ran the inn for years; however, it became burdensome, and in the early 1960s, she sold The Hurley Bell. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, on Restaurant Row, Lawrence L. Frank, an entrepreneur of

the day, had transplanted from Milwaukee. A baker by trade, he and his brother-in-law, Walter Van de Kamp, began opening restaurants. There was the Tam O’Shanter Inn, and next came Lawry's The Prime Rib (a derivation of Lawrence's name). Lawry’s opened in 1938 and became an almost overnight hit. Richard N. Frank took over the leadership of the company in 1956. By 1963, they had four restaurants and Lawry’s was celebrating 25 years and Lawrence’s son Richard N. Frank was president of the family’s businesses. When the time came for the next restaurant, only a truly unique structure would do. With Richard’s love of English countryside, The Hurley Bell seemed the perfect match. Van de Kamp suggested the name Five Crowns because the new restaurant would be their fifth, and each was a jewel in their crown. Richard thought The Bell and Crown would have been a better name, but the Five Crowns name stuck, and the rest is history, as they say! Five Crowns was one of the first truly “themed” restaurants, from the Tudor-style building, to uniforms and pewter plates and an olde English authentic menu…and on April 14, 1965, Five Crowns opened its doors. Fast forward to today, and Five Crowns is still a legend. In the past few years, the restaurant has made some lovely additions, including improvements to the dining rooms, replacing the tavern concept with the hipper Sidedoor Gastropub–with lowhung wood beams and the perfect setting for sipping craft cocktails and enjoying

“This fall, Five Crowns will begin proudly celebrating our 50th anniversary here in Corona del Mar. We want to present a new menu offering guests a flexible dining experience---paying homage to the classics, while offering a much broader selection of starters, entrees, and family-style options. We want to let our guests create their own unique dining experience here at Five Crowns.” Ryan O’Melveny Wilson (grandson of Richard N. Frank ) Corporate Executive Chef and VP Lawry’s Restaurants, Inc. tasty small plates–and many creative additions to the cuisine and menu offerings, with its classic entrees like prime rib and their famous Yorkshire pudding and creamed corn. It is also a special place for celebrations. My mother used to love to dine here during the holidays. She would enjoy the carolers all dressed in period costumes, strolling through the dining room and singing her favorite holiday tunes. Over the years, we have enjoyed graduation parties, birthdays, and so many other wonderful celebrations here. It remains a place where family traditions and memories continue to be made. Five Crowns holds a special place in my heart and always will. Deirdre Michalski is a travel and culinary writer. TastesAndTravel.com
