The kids at Northland Christian School found out just how much goes into home building when they took on a house-flipping project to raise money for their school. Working with local contractors and specialists taught them about what it takes to make a building into something more. And then there’s the Lee family, a couple that is devoted to creating beautiful details both inside and outside the home. John’s landscaping has created sanctuary for friends and clients alike and Leann has oodles of ideas to brighten up the home. No matter what space you’re working with, the focus of your home should be, well, you. Your proverbial nest should be a place where you can grow and thrive and rest and relax when you need a break. Break out the throw pillows and family portraits and make your house a home.

Strategic Initiative Hits Stride with Phase II The Clay County Strategic Planning Initiative is entering its second phase. Formed in March by the Economic Development Council, the group held six public meetings and met with industry and community leaders throughout Clay County. Its goal is to develop the county’s first comprehensive road map for quality growth. Initiative Co-Chair Greg Canuteson noted Clay County has the third fastest growing economy in Missouri. “Clay County is going to develop rapidly,” he says. “The only question is, ‘How?’” One of the Initiative’s topics included examination of existing and potential industry concentrations. Other tactical initiatives include development of a fair and consistent regulatory environment and coordinated transportation strategies. EDC Chair Tony Reinhart noted that the goal of the Initiative is attraction of 50 new companies and 5,000 new jobs over the next 10 years. “Clay County is at a crossroads and we can direct our growth to bring high-paying jobs and quality of life for everyone,” he says. “We’ve had more than $1.2 billion in growth this year, just in businesses nominated for our Keystone awards. With some effort and by working smart, Clay County can achieve the level of growth and type of growth we all want.”

Creating an Artful Home Choosing the right piece creates perfection for your space Article Elizabeth Rosenberger | photography Provided
C
hoosing the best art for your home can be an exciting adventure – something that will be enjoyed by all for years to come. The key is to figure out what you like, how to exhibit it and where it must be displayed. Art is more than just a painting - it ranges from decorative mirrors to nature. But experts agree that choosing the perfect eye-catching piece should be what appeals to you. Art from your heart
Sean Smith, owner of Art & Frame Warehouse in the Northland says the best way to select artwork for your home is to choose a piece you like instead of something that is trendy. Although art can be decorative, it shouldn’t be chosen primarily to match your interior design. “Art doesn’t have to be expensive or one of a kind,” Sean says. “Your art should evoke something in you.” If you’re already an art connoisseur, you probably have a good idea what appeals to you. If not, check out the art within your community, art fairs and local exhibitions. Online art shopping has evolved into a big industry too, giving the shopper a wealth of styles to choose from. Keep in mind, the size of your art should be cohesive to the area you want to hang it. After your piece is purchased, try hanging the painting in different areas of the home; finding the best surroundings that will enhance the room and add beauty and impact. Another option that’s become popular is photographs. Sean says instead of buying pricy artwork, his customers are taking photos that have special meaning and having it transferred onto photo paper or canvas in large sizes. “The final look is very professional,” he adds. 18 Northland Lifestyle | January 2014
The world of frames
The main purpose for a frame is to focus on the work of art– not overpower it. Framing is an art in itself and choosing the perfect one can be daunting. The style of painting should reflect the frame style. For instance, a period or classical painting would be complimented by a traditional and elegant gold-leafed frame or a handsome walnut or mahogany wood frame. Lighter, ethereal, or more abstract paintings may look best in sleek, less fussy frames. For paintings that are in-between, there are transitional frames—those that blend elements of the traditional and the contemporary. If you’re unsure about picking out a frame, choosing a trained and professional framer can be key to helping you in this area. Their knowledge and expertise can help the artwork look its best, and a lot of places offer free consultation. Also, a little-known secret in the framing world is not every work of art needs framing. Canvas wrap is elegant and causes the artwork to stand-alone with its beauty. A room with a view
There isn’t anything more beautiful than nature. And when it comes to some rooms, all you need is the outside view framed by windows or French doors to enhance the beauty of your home. The pure and natural light from the outdoors will enhance and bring beauty to any room. In those cases, less is more. For more information about art and framing techniques, visit AFWKC. com/info-northland-store, ArtistsNetwork.com or Houzz.com.

Building your Home Gym Article Nick Bromberg
G
ym memberships don’t come without drawbacks. The amenities and equipment can be great, but you have to share them with others. And sometimes, especially in January and February, you have to wait to use them. With a home gym, you don’t have to share with anyone, except maybe your family. There are no monthly dues, and there’s no commute either. Sure, there are some startup costs, but those are on your terms. If you want to be savvy and patient, you can build your own home gym for the cost of a few months’ dues. Or if you have the space and budget, a gym to rival any fitness center is possible. If you’re looking to save as much as possible, your first stop should be Craigslist. For every person looking to build a home gym, there’s one or more looking to get rid of the equipment in one. Peruse the sporting goods list and check back every day for deals. But you’ll need to know what to look for You’re going to want some assorted dumbbells, a 300-pound Olympic weight set, and an adjustable bench. Don’t worry about purchasing every dumbbell possible; just look for the weight ranges that you typically use. You can add more to your gym in the future. The 300 lb set should have two 5, 10, 25, 35 and 45 pound plates and offers you plenty of flexibility with weight combinations. It’s great for performing deadlifts, the perfect home gym exercise. All you need is a concrete or rubber floor. Plus, if you’re handy and want to build something, you can build

your own power rack. Do a search for instructions on your favorite internet search engine and head to the hardware store. You can save up to 75 percent. If you’re looking to go all out, you can take the staples listed above – either used, or brand new -- and add to it. But don’t feel that you need to find the most expensive equipment available. A $300 power rack will likely meet all your needs versus spending $600. Just make sure that it has handles for pull ups and chin ups. Kettlebells are a perfect addition to any home gym; kettlebell swings are great for glute and hamstring strength and cardiovascular conditioning without requiring much space. But to accomplish that, you’ll want a relatively heavy set. Don’t go any lighter than 25 pounds, and 35 pounds for men. If you’ve got more space in your gym area, in addition to your power rack adding a cable crossover stack adds a ton of flexibility for not only upper body exercises, but also for core exercises. And make sure to purchase a rope and individual handles for the crossover stack as well. And no home gym -- or the home of someone who works out on a regular basis for that matter -- is complete without a comfortable exercise mat and foam roller. No one likes stretching on a wood or cold concrete floor, and a good foam roller is a $20 substitute for a personal massage therapist. (Find them at Amazon.com.) No one likes being sore and relief is only a roll away.

Brand New Home; Lived-in Look The Glenn Family starts fresh in Staley Farms Article Cristin Walters | Photography Mallorie McKernan
T
he Glenns are no strangers to making a home uniquely their own. Michele, John and their two children, daughter Taylor and son Jackson, are on their fifth home build. And now, in the New Year, they have an opportunity to make fresh memories in their newly constructed Staley Farms home. Despite the newness of their home, they aren’t new to the community. “We’re familiar with the neighborhood, we’ve actually lived in the neighborhood for seven years,” Michele says. “Long story short, we lived in Kansas City, moved to Oklahoma for a few years, moved back to Kansas City and bought a house in Creek Club, which is the first little subdivision when you enter the neighborhood from Woodland Avenue.”
24 Northland Lifestyle | January 2014
They lived there for six years, but Michele says when their daughter Taylor left to attend college at the University of Missouri at Columbia, they realized the floor plan they had wasn’t going to be as good a fit as originally thought. With help from realtor Jenny Burkhead of the Rob Ellerman Realty Team at Reece and Nichols, the Glenns did some research, a lot of looking, and ultimately claimed that new piece of Staley Farms where they could build their little piece of heaven. Builders John and Keri Miller of Distinctive Homes by J and K Properties helped the Glenns create their new vision. John had built a previous home for them, making the decision to hire the Millers easy. “We knew what to expect with him,” John says. “This is the fifth house we’ve
built and so the experience was much easier, because you see something and it’s not completely finished and you don’t freak out.” As per usual, building a home takes time, and in this case it took eight months. The process was slowed due to heavy rains and unusual snow fall, which forced the Glenn family into an apartment for five months. Apartment living was a challenge, especially with both children home during the summer, but they were able to stick it out. In September, they moved into the finished home. “We wanted to stay in Staley Farms because we love the neighborhood, love the golf community,” Michele says. “If my husband isn’t at home or at work, he’s on the course.” In fact, they even built a garage specifically for John’s golf cart with a door that
opens on the back side of the house, making it easy for him to take in a round. “We love it here. We love the new floor plan, love the views,” Michele says. “We did a lot with the architectural layout of the house on purpose. We had the big double glass doors put in so we would have the view of the tee box, and tried to put in as many windows on the back of the house as we could.” No one would blame them for wanting to see as much of the view as possible, considering the tee box for the 17th hole of the Staley Farms Golf Course is their backyard. With the wonderful views, entertaining and their busy family in mind, John and Michele tweaked the planned layout of their 1.5 story home until it was perfect. The home boasts a large, open living area and kitchen, as well as a beautiful master suite on the main floor. The lower level offers billiards, a media room and ample storage, while the upper level houses three additional bedrooms and a stunning wall of built-in bookshelves on a landing overlooking the great room.
And despite not having had much time to get things unpacked and decorate their home with their collected treasures, it still has plenty of gorgeous appeal. The great room features tall ceilings with exposed beams and a stone accent wall surrounding the grand fireplace, as well as a floor to ceiling stone accent wall backing the staircase. “We mimicked a few things that were in the builder’s home that we absolutely loved,” Michele says. “The tall ceilings with the beams and the staircase stone feature wall that goes from top to bottom were the pieces we wanted to incorporate into the house.” These additions provide the home with a style marriage of high-end lodge and French country. “This great room is probably where we spend the most of our time,” Michele says. “We’re still in the process of getting furniture and so forth in our basement so we don’t spend a lot of time down there yet.” Taking the view into consideration, large glass double doors slide open to reveal an indoor – outdoor living space. lead to a covered deck complete with a fireplace and built-in housing for an exterior television. The Glenns were able to take advantage of a couple of nice fall days to roast some marshmallows on their new deck, but say they look forward to the upcoming spring and summer to really take advantage of their new digs. “On our previous house the rear deck faced west so we really couldn’t ever use it,” John says. This time, they made sure that the back of the house faced the east, so they could escape the extreme heat that finds its way in during summer afternoons in the Midwest. And when they do want to escape the often surprising Missouri weather, they can welcome friends and family into their large kitchen. An oversized kitchen island features high gloss granite countertops in a caramel cream shade with flakes of gold shining throughout. On the surrounding counters black granite offsets the light-colored island and cabinets. “I had never seen anything like this before,” Michele says of the black granite used in part of their kitchen. “It’s matte and it’s a ‘sueded’ finish, it’s not smooth,
it does have little bumps in it. I love it because it has so much texture.” And the textured details continue through the kitchen with a faux-finished hood and fireplace mantel created by Jennifer Allwood of the Magic Brush. Walnut-stained oak floors are found throughout the entire main floor. “It’s a lot of random width boards,” John says. “Each one of these pieces had to go through a table saw to be beveled on both sides to give the wood this rustic, old look,” John says. The Glenns say the process of selecting items for their home was stress free because Keri chose things as if they would be going in her home. She did a good job of providing options that helped everything turn out perfectly. “That’s something that Keri and John do very well, is help with all of the decision making,” John says. The impressive details throughout this home are too many to list. This is just the beginning for the Glenns in their phenomenal new home; one can only imagine how much more amazing it will be when the Glenns are fully settled in.
Northland Christian School Builds Trailblazers in Home Improvement Student fundraising project teaches life skills. Article Pete Dulin | Photography Julie Tresenriter

hen the Northland Christian School sought additional funds to buy property for a new school, the junior/ senior class of 2014 proposed a novel idea. They wanted to acquire and renovate a home in the Northland that could be sold to raise approximately $40,000 in funds. With help from the community, the hardworking students completed the renovation in a mere eight weeks. Northland Christian is a non-denominational school, dually accredited through AdvanceED and Association of Christian Schools International. The school ended the 2012-2013 academic year with 267 students (preschool through 12th grade). In 2006, Jeff Baird and Danny McCubbin founded the school to fulfill the need of providing Christian education to high school students in Kansas City’s Northland. Initially, the class invited a realtor/investor to speak on the pro28 Northland Lifestyle | January 2014
cess involved with “flipping” a house. Most students had no idea what renovating and selling a house would entail, but they listened intently as the realtor outlined what would be required. “It was a great lesson and the wheels were set in motion for the idea to become ‘reality,’” says Sheryl Harner, a nurse at the school. Next, the class located a suitable property owned by a family that served as missionaries to the Micronesian people group in Hawaii. The family formerly used the home for ministry, but more recently it had become rental income. Managing property from 3,000 miles away became difficult. Selling the property to the 2014 class was an opportunity for the family to partner with those that had common goals and values. The family agreed to allow the students to work on the property, sell it and use proceeds earned to support the land campaign.
Located at 4307 N. Askew, the three-bedroom, one-bath house needed substantial work. “Upon first inspection, it was clear a large dumpster would be required to haul away many years of refuse,” says Harner. The students sought the advice of a commercial construction project manager on how to proceed. He was impressed with their efforts and promptly ordered and paid for a dumpster to be delivered. “The students worked after school in the evenings and on weekends through June,” says Julie Brown, a development support coordinator at Northland Christian School. “They refurbished the house and rebuilt the interior.” The students first began cleaning out the home and garage. They also began making contacts with the skilled labor that would be needed to improve the property. A home inspection was donated. Overall, 15 students helped with the major renovation. The two-story house now has a large, updated kitchen, beautiful wood floors, a bay window in the dining area, a new roof and tile in the bathroom. Ample natural light enters through many windows positioned throughout the house. A wood deck offers a cozy place to relax during warm weather. The property includes a one-car garage and gravel drive. “From start to finish the students were engaged with the process,” Harner says. While working on the house, the students met neighbors, learned skills, gained a better understanding of real estate and investment opportunities, and saw the value of working together for a common cause. They also realized what it looks like to live in community and serve those in the neighboring community. “As they began the project, they wanted to let the neighbors know what they were up to,” Harner adds. “They went door to door and delivered cookies, introducing themselves as the students from Northland. They mowed an elderly woman’s lawn, planted flowers, washed windows, painted trim and continue to care for the lawn while waiting for the home to sell.”
Local businesses donated time, labor and materials toward the project. Parkville-based Christian Brothers Roofing reroofed the house with new shingles. Home Depot, The Grass Pad and Liberty Tree Service also donated product or services. All Set! Home and Business Staging, located in Edgerton, Mo., handled the decor and staging after completion of construction and renovation. The single-family, 1,205-square-foot house remained on the market as of late November. Harner says, “The students continue to pray for just the right buyer to purchase the property.” Sited in the North Kansas City School District, the house features central air and forced air natural gas heating. Keller Williams agent Lisa Beckham, also a parent of a student at Northland Christian School, has volunteered to list the property with a $70,000 price tag. For inquiries about the house listing, contact Lisa Beckham at 816.289.7868. No matter when the house sells, the students at Northland Christian School have set an impressive example and leave a legacy of service in their community.

Creating Spaces Parkville Couple Helps Beautify Homes—Inside and Out Article Alexandra Bush | Photography Provided
M
any married couples divide up domestic duties—sometimes the wife will take on caring for the interior, and the husband the exterior, or vice versa. But few do it with the professional precision of Parkville’s Leanne and John Lee. “He takes care of the outside and I take care of the inside, and that’s pretty much how we do business,” says Leanne of their own home, which is a beautiful display of creative design on both sides of the walls. Fortunately for homeowners in the Northland and beyond, the Lees do not keep their talents to themselves. John owns and operates a landscaping company serving the Parkville area, LawnWorx (LawnWorxLLC.com), and Leanne runs a successful decorative painting company, Rekindled Spaces (RekindledSpaces.com). Leanne and John did not originally intend to have parallel careers. The Lees met in college—Leanne was studying business at the University of Kansas, and John education at Baker University. After college, the two married and moved to Parkville, where Leanne worked in insurance and John taught at the local high school. When the couple became pregnant with their first child, Con-

nor, Leanne contemplated a career switch. “I was just looking for something that I could do and try to stay home with him,” she says. “I got interested in HGTV and all those shows, and I decided to start a decorative painting business.”
Connor is now 15 years old, and Rekindled Spaces, with the slogan “fall in love with your home again,” is on its 14th year. The thousands of decorative painting projects she has taken on throughout the years include beautiful refinishing of walls, cabinetry and furniture, which display Leanne’s delicate, rustic aesthetic. “I guess I’ve always been creative, but I didn’t’ realize it,” Leanne says. “It doesn’t matter to me if the house is big or the house is small. For me, it’s them letting me help with the creativity of it.” Rekindled Space’s clients cover the Kansas City Metro area from north to south, but Leanne’s talents have been recognized through various media outlets as well. In addition to performing demonstrations in home shows throughout the year, Leanne is featured on a weekly segment for local television program, Kansas City Live. Every Wednesday, Leanne becomes the “Do-It-Yourself Diva” in residence, sharing with audiences creative home projects, from holiday décor to personalized gifts to decorative painting techniques. Leanne was also featured on an episode of Restaurant Impossible that aired in December, where she got to participate in the rebuilding of a firehouse in New Jersey that had been destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. Leanne refinished the cabinetry in the station, as well as breathing new life into old furniture. “I don’t do a good job doing the same thing every day, so what I love is I’m always meeting new people and going into new homes,” Leanne says of the spontaneity offered by her profession. “Every day I get up I’m excited to go to work.” John’s transition to his current career came more gradually. During his 14-year tenure teaching at the local high school, he would do some landscaping in his free time during the summers. “All of a sudden it became a beast of its own,” he says, “It kind of took over.” John decided to take it fulltime, and LawnWorx was born. LawnWorx offers services in lawn irrigation systems, landscape lighting and gardening tips. John says they serve several hundred Parkville homes, and 80% of their business is a result of referrals—highlighting his business’ focus on building strong personal relationships “I really like and know my customers,” he says. “They start out as customers, but they end up being friends.” This personal approach to his profession truly shone through when he heard a Parkville woman, Angie Corbin, had lost her husband, Stephen, in 2012. Last year, LawnWorx donated the labor, and helped Angie find a designer, for the instillation of a memorial garden in Stephen’s honor. Since then, John has become good
friends with Angie (whose twin daughters are close in age to the Lee’s 12 year-old twin boys). “That was probably my most enjoyable job, because it was so heartfelt,” John says of the garden, which included several aspects that represented Stephen for Angie. “It was a God-given thing, I think, that was placed in my hands.” John also says one of his favorite aspects of what he does is helping first-time homeowners create their new homes, and getting the opportunity to interact on a friendly level with his customers beyond the business, whether it is seeing them at local sporting events or elsewhere in the community. He says about half of LawnWorx’s 600 customers are in or around the Parkville area. “I know their husbands, wives, kids, what they do,” John says. “With my teaching background, I really enjoy that bond.” While Leanne and John’s respective professions don’t typically overlap (“I’m pretty sure we try to stay out of each other’s way,” John says with a laugh), the couple says they do bounce ideas off each other. In addition, a theme of repurposing and sustainability can be seen in what both do. For Leanne, that means avoiding things like solvent-based products, and promoting the benefits of eco-friendly paints, but also in revamping the old rather than bringing in the new. Even in their own home, details like reclaimed flooring and a fire mantle salvaged from a church provide a storied feel to a new house. “I’m all about trying to salvage whatever we can, whether it’s using existing cabinetry and giving it a facelift, or using furniture and heirloom pieces,” she says. “I love taking things that have meaning for someone, especially when you get something handed down to you, and making them proud of it.” For John, being sustainable means embracing technology that can positively affect both the homeowner and community, including utilizing low-voltage lighting as well as water and energy conservation techniques. “On my side, we’re constantly looking for conservation stuff,” John says. “We are looking for a lot of ways to save energy, and customers are looking for that as well.” Creating a home of your own, and getting to share that personality with your friends and community members is a special part of life. We all want a beautiful home, inside and out. Leanne and John Lee make it their business to ensure those dreams come true, for members of their own Northland community and beyond.

A Girl’s Best Friend Lil’ Pink Bubbles brings vintage charm to bath and beauty Article Alexandra Bush | Photography Lani Odell
T
he storefront of Zona Rosa’s Lil’ Pink Bubbles reads like the pinnacle of 1950s femininity: all that is woman, with a hint of playful and a dash of sexy and a whole lot of sass. Rosemary Clooney croons in the background. Monroe, Hepburn and Taylor look on approvingly from the walls. Vintage luggage and bodices adorn the corners, and a claw foot tub filled with delicate goodies serves as the centerpiece. Powder pink, animal print and tulle abound. Owner Lori Rodriguez says she has always been enamored with Rat Pack-era aesthetics, and the vibe is fully realized in the luxury bath and beauty shop, where “pampering is a passion.” Rodriguez, a part-time emergency nurse, opened Lil’ Pink Bubbles more than two years ago. She moved the operation from St. Joseph to the Zona Rosa community in Kansas City this August.
“People are into a whole lot of natural cures now, and a lot of these helped me when I got over several surgeries that I had,” Rodriguez says. “I thought it was useful and that a lot of other people may benefit from it.” Recovery was foremost in Rodriguez’s mind in developing a line of enriched bath salts, with the idea of aiding those in recovery, those who work on their feet, those who have discomfort from strenuous exercise, or anyone else who could benefit from a bit of pampering—and who couldn’t? Now Lil’ Pink Bubbles offers a buffet of delectable items made in-house or sourced from small companies throughout the U.S. “I really believe in supporting small business owners, so most of the products I purchase that aren’t ours are from small companies,” Rodriguez says. “Our products change all the time, and we keep it interesting that way.” continued >

The most popular feature is the window-facing Scoop Shop, where shoppers can fill reusable jars with aromatic bath salts, the most popular of which is the unisex Sexy Sinatra—a musky, sultry wonder. A pour-your-own massage oil center will debut in January, echoing the interactive sentiment. Every item in the boutique seamlessly blends practicality and indulgence. Glamorous bouffant-shaped shower caps are offered in polka dot and cheetah print, bath balms come shaped and decorated as fluffy cupcakes you’d be tempted to take a bite of in a weak moment, and soy candles infused with essential oils fill up mid-century antique melamine teacups. “It’s just a woman’s store,” Rodriguez says, adding that the age range of her customers varies widely, as does the affordability— with bath oils going 2 for $1, and high-end items approaching $50. Big-budget retailers dominate the Zona Rosa shopping center, so a locally owned storefront can offer a breath of fresh air. It’s just icing on the cake that the air is wafting with scents of vanilla and eucalyptus and Italian lemon. “I think the people really appreciate the personal care they get when they come into a store like this,” Rodriguez says of the intimate feel. “We have unusual products, and our staff is trained to teach about these products and how they can fit into their lives.” With its delicate décor, sultry sentiment and local flavor, Lil’ Pink Bubbles offers a sweet escape, inspired by the women of the past and tailored to the women of today.

Swirl Wine Bar A place to sip and relax in the Northland Article Rachel Murphy | Photography Deana Johnson, A Day To Adore
P
icture this: A sea of plush red bar chairs face a marble topped bar. Taps gleam on the back wall. A chalkboard lists the latest tap handles pouring your favorite pinot grigio. Wait. What? Yep, wine on tap has arrived in the Northland and it’s the tasty addition that we’ve been waiting for. Swirl Wine Bar and Shoppe at the Village at Burlington Creek is changing the way that people drink wine. Wine bars featuring flights have become quite popular in the last few years, but the problem of keeping the wine from oxidizing when pouring small amounts has plagued restaurant owners. Some have chosen elaborate systems 36 Northland Lifestyle | January 2014
featuring bottles, but owner Heather Redman thinks that wine on tap is the perfect solution. Swirl is low key, less bar than swank gathering spot with comfy couches in the back for small groups and the aforementioned plush bar chairs for those that wish to see the taps. There are eight wines on tap, four red and four white, at any given time. There are also eight beer taps available, all craft oriented and featuring such beer geek favorites as Founders Brewing Company, North Coast and of course, hometown favorite Boulevard Brewing Company. The lovely thing about wines on tap is the ability to try them before committing to a whole glass and to this end, Redman offers flights of four wines for $9. She carries some tasty options, including local Kansas City vintner Amigoni’s Cabernet Sauvignon. The
Troublemaker blend is a huge favorite of many guests as well as their three person staff, according to bartender Emily. Individual glasses of wine range from $6-$9 and beers are in the $6-$8 range. The one drawback to the small bar is the lack of more food options. They offer four small plate options, which are perfect to nibble on, but if you’re substantially hungry, then Swirl will have to be a before dinner drink stop. My friend and I shared the Beer Lover’s Special ($8) which features a Boulevard chilled creamy cheese dip accompanied by baby carrots, crunchy pretzel sticks and nuts. We also shared Swirl’s Elite Cheese Platter ($12) featuring local Cottonwood River cheddar, garlic basil gouda, havarti with dill, Irish stout black currant jam, Marcona almonds, dried cherries, black truffle and regular breadsticks, crostini, course mustard and Old Forest salami. The plate was tasty, but would have benefited from more variety of cheeses, all of which tasted vaguely like each other. Adding a harder cheese such as a pecorino or an aged Gouda or a soft French style cheese would have livened it up a bit. Swirl also offers a trio of hummus by local favorite Yummy’s, as well as a chocolate truffle flight. While the food may leave something to be desired, that’s not the primary reason to come to Swirl and to meet its end, the menu does a good job. The left wall of the space offers up the other reason to come to Swirl: its bottle selection. They feature bottles of every ilk rangcontinued >

ing from $10-$30 per bottle and with Redman’s long history in working with fine wines, the expertise to choose the perfect bottle for your dinner or gathering. Redman can also create gift baskets featuring wine and gourmet foodstuffs with a day’s notice. She says that they have been popular for business or wedding gifts so far. She also offers a wine club and a beer club where members receive bottles each month to try and share. Swirl is a new venture and has found its footing quickly. They offer live music on the weekends and when the weather warms, the patio will be a great place to sip and chat the evening away. Redman says that she will extend the hours of Swirl in the summer months to take advantage of long hours of sunshine. All in all, Redman has done a great job of creating a concept that’s unlike any other in the Northland, blending friendly service and a fairly unique product with a great location. I can see myself sipping an albariño on the patio in the summer months or hunkering down with a good friend or a good book in the winter. Either way, as long as the wine continues to flow, Swirl will be a destination in the Northland.

A Better Place to Call Home Heartland Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Housing Initiative offers resources and support to those who have served our country. Article Lisa Allen | Photography Provided
T
he statistics are sobering. There are 81,000 veterans in the five-county metro area serviced by Heartland Habitat for Humanity. Nine million veterans nationwide are senior citizens, many of whom live on a fixed income but are still expected to shoulder the burden of home maintenance and repairs. Mark Naster, resource development coordinator at Heartland Habitat for Humanity, is a Marine Corps veteran. He says that veterans often don’t like to admit that they need help, but that the goal of Heartland Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Housing Initiative is to engage the community in showing veterans and their families that they are valued and that the community supports them. “Heartland Habitat for Humanity is committed to strengthening communities and peoples’ lives and to create opportunities for low income families to develop 40 Northland Lifestyle | January 2014
equity and independence through home ownership,” Naster says. While home construction is the foundation of Heartland Habitat for Humanity, the Veterans Housing Initiative is one of the new opportunities created by changes in the local housing market that allows organizations such as Heartland Habitat for Humanity to expand programs that partner with families to maintain and preserve their homes. The initiative will focus on five main areas: wheelchair ramps, accessibility modifications, energy saving weatherization, painting, siding, gutters and landscaping and other critical home repairs. Because many veterans face unique housing needs due to a disability from combat injuries, the ‘A Brush With Kindness’ program is a unique opportunity for volunteers to make a difference in the life of someone who has
given so much to defend our country. The Veterans Housing Initiative is built on five key strategies: affordable housing and home preservation, volunteer mobilization, education, celebration and identification of veterans. Individuals or family members who have served on active duty for at least six months qualify for the initiative, provided they received any discharge other than dishonorable or are retired. Gold Star Families—immediate family members of fallen service members—also qualify. Along with more than 50 military related community organizations in the greater Kansas City area, the Veterans Housing Initiative provides an opportunity for veterans to serve locally not only to help those in need of housing, but also to celebrate and honor veterans in the local community. With additional special events to
pay tribute to veterans and their families and to raise awareness of the unique challenges they face once home, Heartland Habitat for Humanity plans to schedule events each year that coincide with recognized celebrations and events that focus on veterans issues. “Locating veterans that need assistance is a key priority,” says Naster. “We are reaching out to various government, civic, media and social service and business organizations to not only promote the program but also to identity applicants and volunteers.” “As a Vietnam era veteran I have a special place in my heart and soul for fellow veterans, especially wartime veterans”, says Steve Thompson, director of construction at Heartland Habitat for Humanity. “This is a program based on gratitude and is a combined effort with community support to show the veterans and their families that we care. Simple home repairs that the veteran may not be able to do can be done with Heartland Habitat acting in harmony with community partners. We ask our veteran population to give us a chance to extend a helping hand on some of those projects in their homes that may be a challenge. We would like the opportunity to serve all of them the way that they have served us.” Naster says Habitat for Humanity is very proud and honored to help more families through the Veterans Housing Initiative. ”We couldn’t do this without the support of BMO Harris Bank,” he explains. A presenting sponsor of the program, BMO Harris Bank shares Heartland Habitat for Humanity’s commitment to building, strengthening and enhancing the lives of those who live and work in the communities they serve. BMO Harris
Bank Kansas City President Brad Smith says the bank is also pleased to back the Initiative. “We are proud to support Heartland Habitat's Veterans Housing Initiative, both financially and through employee volunteerism,” Smith says. “We are excited to roll up our sleeves and work side by side with veteran volunteers, and to be a part of program that will ensure that those vets in need have a better place to call home. We owe a great debt of gratitude to veterans for all they have done to support our country and people around the globe." Acura’s Redesigned RLX Shows Off its Technology article and photography tom strongman
T
he all-new Acura RLX arrives at an important time for the brand’s flagship sedan because Acura sold just 379 RL sedans in 2012. A new approach was needed, and thus the all-new model. One reason the RL did not sell well was because its backseat was not much bigger than that of a Civic sedan. I’m sure the ultra conservative styling didn’t help, either. The RLX addresses that issue of room with a wheelbase that is 2-inches longer, 59.6 inches of front seat legroom, 38.8 inches of rear seat legroom and 57 inches of shoulder room. Acura says this is the most rear seat legroom in the mid-size luxury segment that includes vehicles such as the Cadillac CTS, Infiniti M37, Lexus GS 350, Audi A6 and BMW 535i. The cabin is attractive and nicely appointed. The front seats have excellent lumbar support, as do almost all Acura and Honda products. Acura is the luxury division of Honda. On the road, the RLX feels pretty much like the other cars in this segment. Wind and road noise are nicely moderated. Performance is sprightly but not outstanding, and it feels solid at highway speeds. Cornering is aided by precision all-wheel steering that
42 Northland Lifestyle | January 2014
makes subtle changes to the toe angle of the rear wheels to help steer around corners and maintain stability under heavy braking. The RLX has a 3.5-liter V-6 with 310 horsepower and a six-speed automatic transmission. The base model starts at $48,450. Optional packages include Navigation, Technology, Krell Audio and Advance. The top Advance model has a base price of $60,450. Flared front fenders and LED headlights brighten up the front, although Acura’s signature beak grille remains, now in a toneddown form. Side character lines give the car a bit more visual interest, but the sagging fender line over the front wheels looks forced. The rest of the design is unremarkably conservative. Of course, it takes more than new styling and extra legroom to sell a car so Acura added a number of safety and driver-assist features such as lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, lowspeed follow, blind-spot monitor, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and collision mitigation brake system. Lane keeping assist and low-speed follow enable the car to almost drive itself in stop-and-go traffic.
A Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive model is due next year and it will combine hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive. No details are available yet.
AT A GLANCE Point: The RLX is a step forward, especially consider-

Counterpoint: The RLX feels a lot like a bigger Honda Accord with more standard features rather than a mid-size luxury model.

Body of Work When the damage is done, contact Precision Collision Repair Article Pete Dulin | Photography Lani Odell
C
hris and Leann Jones, owners of Precision Collision Repair, have dealt with plenty of damage over the years. Since 2004 when they opened for business in Pleasant Valley, the couple has worked with countless customers and insurance companies to complete collision repairs on vehicles. They expanded with a second location in Gladstone six years later. Working on vehicles has been a lifelong vocation for Chris. He started working on cars with his father at the age of 10. During high school, he attended Atchison Vo-Tech and then started a full-time position as a body technician after graduation. He has also worked as a frame technician, painter technician and a body shop manager, accumulating experience before opening his own shop. Further, he has continued industry training to stay updated on changes and advances in automobile repair. “Being properly trained is key for anything you do or want to accomplish,” Chris says. “I also believe that you have to want it bad enough. My father always said, ‘it’s not going to come to you on a silver platter!’” High quality results and customer service are important at the shop. “Precision Collision will go the extra mile to ensure that the customer gets just that,” Chris says. “We handle the processes with the
44 Northland Lifestyle | January 2014
insurance companies to simplify them for the customer. We assist in setting up rental vehicles. We are a ‘direct repair provider’ for most major insurance companies.” Customers visiting Precision Collision are often greeted by a friendly, familiar face. Chris says, “Pepper, an English Bulldog, has come to work with us since he was about seven-weeks-old. He is 9 now. He is my little buddy and loves people. He will hear the bell go off on the door and get up to go see who is here. He may come see you, he may not. Depends on his mood and how hard he has worked that day.” Chris offers clear instructions to protect your vehicle when an accident happens. “First call Precision Collision from the accident scene to get a tow truck dispatched if needed,” he says. “Get us on the way before the police have someone else tow your vehicle. You might not even know where it will end up.” Once in the shop, no aspect of the customer experience and business operation is overlooked. Leann offers insight. “We strive for a friendly atmosphere from the front office areas to the back lot,” she says. “We keep our facilities clean, comfortable and as environmentally safe as possible. We recycle as old parts,
scrap metal, paper, tires and fluids as much as possible. We use environmentally safe, water-based paint products that also keeps our painters healthier.” Rather than compete on price – being neither the highest nor lowest option in town – the business emphasizes the quality of their work. They produce quality repairs and an experience that reduces the stress from vehicle damage, starting with a fair estimate. “We want to write the most accurate estimate possible,” says Chris. “We are not the shop that will underwrite the estimate to get you in the door only to hit you with additional damages once we get you locked in. We want to write it correctly up front, keeping in mind our limited lifetime warranty that we must stand behind.” Chris and Leann offer tips on how to get the best results during the estimation process. “Ask the appraiser to fully explain the estimate and the process. What is the time frame? Why is your estimate different?” Chris says. “No two estimates will be the same. Everyone has their own opinions so just be sure everyone is comfortable with how the repairs will take place.”
Ask us about our Special Financing Offers!
Ask about what types of parts will be used. If aftermarket, are they certified? Also, customers need not get more than one estimate. “Whether insurance is paying the cost of the repair or you are paying out of pocket, it is your vehicle and your right to choose the repair facility. Choose wisely!” Chris cautions. “Choose someone like Precision Collision where they stand behind their warranty, use quality products and practice friendly professional service every day.” Leann offers additional thoughts regarding the cost of repair. “If a customer is paying for repairs and wants to cut cost, we can work with them without jeopardizing any structural integrity of the vehicle,” she says. “Chris has always had a saying and stands behind it, ‘If I can’t repair a vehicle and put my family in it and drive it down the road, I will not repair it.’ If our estimate is higher than the next shop’s, then ask why. We have lost repairs because of this as well only because we noticed damage that another shop didn’t. Don’t take it for granted.” When a vehicle accident happens and repairs are needed, Precision Collision Repair is a reliable resource. After earning a “Best of the Northland” award three years running, their reputation speaks for itself.

What’s Cooking?
Chase Away Winter Chills with Meals from Your Pantry T
here’s nothing quite like a hearty, homemade meal to help warm up those cold winter nights. And with a well-stocked pantry – or “Cantry” – Home-Style Chicken Pot Pie, is just a few cans away. Because cans lock in foods’ freshness and nutrition, stocking up on staples like canned tomatoes, green beans, peas and canned chicken means that you have access to wholesome ingredients all winter long. Plus, the more cans you store in your Cantry, the fewer last minute trips you have to make to the supermarket. So this season, when you’re searching for satisfying, heart-warming meals that you and your family can cozy up to, start by looking in your Cantry.
Home-Style Chicken Pot Pie
Prep time: Under 15 minutes Cook time: 55 minutes Serves: 4 3 tablespoons butter or margarine 1/2 cup diced onion 1/2 cup diced potato 1 (8.5-ounce) can peas and carrots, drained 1/4 cup sliced celery 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can cream of chicken soup 1 (10-ounce) can Valley Fresh Chunk Chicken, drained 1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves, crumbled 1/4 teaspoon ground sage 46 Northland Lifestyle | January 2014
1/8 teaspoon white pepper 1 (15-ounce) box refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts) Heat oven to 400°F. In large saucepan, melt butter. Add onion, potato, peas and carrots and celery; sauté 5 minutes. In bowl, combine soup, chicken, rosemary, sage and white pepper; stir into vegetables. Unfold 1 pie crust; fit into 9-inch pie plate. Fill with chicken mixture; cover with second pie crust. Trim crust if needed; press edge with fork. Brush top crust with egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water) to create glossy crust, if desired. Bake pie 10 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F. Bake 25 minutes longer. Cover crust with aluminum foil to prevent browning. Bake 15 minutes more. Tech Today
New Technology Helps Prevent Missed Cell Phone Calls While At Home I
t’s a problem that happens all too often to cell phone users nationally–an important cell call at home goes unanswered because a phone ringtone is turned off, the phone is out of reach, or it is muffled in a pocket, briefcase, drawer or car. Now, a first of its kind, Bluetooth-ready “home base ringer” called Renny is ringing out the old and ringing in the new. Renny is designed with patented technologies never used before to help make sure cell phone rings get heard–and calls get answered. There are other wireless Bluetooth answering speakers on the market, but while those units are basically voice/sound amplifying speakers, Renny from Olens Technology is more of an all-inclusive “home base ringer” station, the first ever to hit the market. Renny combines the best of both worlds by fixing what is wrong with those similar cell phone answering products and offering aspects that the others currently don’t. What makes Renny different? The Renny Home Ringer works anywhere in a home or office by automatically connecting wirelessly to any mobile phone within a 200 foot line of site range–the longest in its category. Even if a phone is on silent or vibrate, Renny will pick up the call and even announce who is calling via its SilentSync technology. The unit allows anyone to answer the call,
48 Northland Lifestyle | January 2014
select ring tones, and even stream music from a smart phone to its powerful loudspeaker using 3D Digital Dynamic Bass technology. Renny also comes equipped with a built-in quality microphone with high-sensitivity and hands-free function for clear voice call answering and communication. Unlike other systems, Renny offers a DualSync technology that allows up to two mobile phones to be connected at once. Other products on the market cannot be used as a reliable full-time home ringer station because they automatically shut off after the phone is out of range for 10 minutes and they tend to experience multiple interference issues when the phone is used in certain parts of the house. While other speaker products must be turned on or off when you want to use them, the rechargeable Renny is always on and ready and works unnoticeably in the background until it is needed. Other speaker products serve as the default audio source for all call functions and steal the signal every time they connect causing dropped or lost calls to the speaker. Renny connects and disconnects repeatedly without any interference when the phone is in use and automatically selects the correct audio source to use during all calls via its AutoLinx technology. The Renny is quite affordable, selling for $99.95. RennyRinger.com.

Paint Chips and Compromise Words Rachel Murphy
W
e stood there awash in a sea of color: turquoise, chameleon green, taupe. So many shades of white, all seemingly blending together into a mélange of blah. At least to me. To my husband’s trained photographer’s eye, they were all special snowflakes. The paint aisle at Home Depot presents a world of possibility, mainly for me to make ridiculous suggestions such as, “Aren’t they all just white?” and “Why not go bold for this one?” We are shopping for paint for the small room off of our kitchen where our gleaming new washer and dryer will go and it’s a small enough room and in a corner tucked far enough away from my husband’s carefully cultivated palate of tasteful pastels and neutrals that I just might get away with picking something that I like. Don’t get me wrong. The reason why Aaron is the maestro of paint colors is because he’s good at it. Not good, great. He has an eye for dimension and the knowledge to know how to eke the most visual space from a wall even when dimensionally it doesn’t make sense. He bought the house before my messy, bohemian lifestyle could try to undo the composed artfulness that’s inherent in everything that he does. Moving into someone else’s house is always intimidating because making it your own without destroying his vision of what it could be is difficult. I try to let him make most of the design decisions because he’s simply better at it. Not once did he decide to decorate his bedroom by taping postcards from museums that he enjoyed. Or change the lighting by throwing a sheer scarf over a lamp. I’m apparently a perpetual college dorm dweller at heart. So when he asked if I wanted to help pick out a paint color for this little cube that could go unnoticed if I screwed it up, I said yes immediately. And off to Home Depot we tromped, he with the 58 Northland Lifestyle | January 2014
wary look of a parent taking a child into a china shop and me with the youthful optimism of a teenager being handed the keys to the car for the first time. I immediately gravitated towards a chip in a flower arrangement on front. It was a medium turquoise, not too bright, with a whimsical name like Bali Bliss or something similarly superfluous. It looked like the sea when the floor drops out and the deep rushes in. Aaron patted me on the shoulder and kept looking. I picked out another chip. It bore the same name. I held onto it, thinking maybe it was a sign. One more time in a separate place, I picked the same one. I pulled out the puppy dog eyes and mentioned how nice a dark color might look against the bright white of the new appliances and finally he acquiesced. Rolling the paint on in a way that I’m sure drove him crazy as I bounced from one side of the small room to another, the color looked dark. It looked moody and rich and it drew the walls toward me in a not completely pleasant way. Was I wrong? Did everything have to be sea foam? Was this sealing my fate as the “bad eye” in our coupling? We kept painting and as it dried, ever so slightly lighter, I began to hope. As we slid the appliances into place, it began to come together. And as we looked at our new washer and dryer, in our newly branded laundry room, with bright white cabinets, I saw that maybe, just maybe, I made the right call. He begrudgingly accepted it and moved onto his next project, a perfectly laid out wall of our collected art. Am I the next designer to the stars? Nope. But when I walk back to stain treat a shirt, I get to bask in the glow of the lovely color that my lovely husband let me pick out. And I know that this house is becoming mine as well as his, one bold paint chip at a time.
