February— Love Local

Welcome to this issue of North Peoria Lifestyle, where we celebrate “Local Love,” a theme that highlights the connections, stories, and people shaping our communities.

Wasn't the North Peoria Home Show fun? We had a blast pulling it together for you. If you think that was fun, carry on the community spirit at the upcoming Broadway Ball 2025: Studio 54 at Arizona Broadway Theater on February 22nd. Don't miss this chance to party with the most creative and fun arts group in the West Valley!

In this edition, we’re honored to feature local couples who have proudly served our country as veterans. Their stories of service, resilience, and love remind us of the strength found in shared purpose, both on and off the battlefield. These remarkable individuals exemplify the power of partnership in every sense.

For those looking to explore new adventures with their spouse, we’ve included a travel feature spotlighting the beautiful Door County Peninsula in Wisconsin, from which many of our readers hail. This getaway is perfect for exploring, rekindling romance, or creating new memories. Whether savoring local cuisine, sampling local wines, setting sail on the water, exploring scenic trails, or simply unwinding together, this destination offers something for every couple.

Closer to home, we ride in the all-new Subaru Forester Sport, blending luxury and practicality for your next road trip or daily commute. Our test drive reveals why Subaru’s commitment to reliability and innovation makes it a favorite among discerning drivers.

Community is at the heart of this issue, and we’re proud to showcase how the Peoria Police Citizens Academy Alumni are making a difference. From supporting the police department's mission to fostering connections between officers and residents, their efforts strengthen the bonds that keep our neighborhoods safe and united.

We hope this issue inspires you to celebrate the love, connection, and commitment found right here in our own backyard.

Fondly,

3 Veterans and Their Spouses Love Operating Local Businesses

LOVE OF FAMILY, COMMUNITY, AND COUNTRY ARE COMMON THEMES FOR THREE LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS

JJ and Amanda Mayes 11

11 Bravo Mobile Auto Glass (11BravoMobileAuto.com), owned by JJ and Amanda Mayes, is named for their love of country and commitment to excellence. JJ served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army for four years and in the Army National Guard for six years.

"The Army core values represent how we live daily, so it made sense to use JJ's Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 11 Bravo in our name," explains Amanda.

JJ's background includes over 20 years as a heavy collision auto body technician. The pair began the business doing moveable glass replacements and other

things, such as bumper replacements and paintless dent repairs. Then, the COVID pandemic changed everything. People weren't driving or spending money on minor repairs, so 11 Bravo was only getting calls for windshield repair.

"We knew we had to pivot to include windshields and got approved as an in-network vendor to take insurance," explains Amanda.

The mobile glass business grew, and soon, mobile glass repair took over. The Mayes will celebrate their seventh year in business in 2025.

Brad and Amanda Shafer

Summer Lovin Spray Tan

Summer Lovin Spray Tan (SummerLovin SprayTan.square.site) is a custom airbrush spray tan experience in North Peoria owned by Amanda and Brad Shafer.

Brad is a third-generation veteran and former first responder. He served as a combat medic in the U.S. Air Force, which brought the couple to Luke Air Force Base in 2001. Brad is also the Mesquite District council member for the City of Peoria. He was appointed to this position in April 2022 and elected in November 2022.

After Amanda’s mother was diagnosed with terminal skin cancer, she was intrigued by natural and organic spray tan solutions. At the same time, she was seeking flexible, home-based work, so it seemed natural to open Summer Lovin Spray Tan. Since founding the business, Amanda and Brad have made it their mission to ensure safe and healthy tanning options.

All the products are top-rated in the industry and formulated from natural and organic ingredients. They are also paraben-free, gluten-free, PETA-approved vegan, and cruelty-free.   Amanda explains that working together has been a big part of the business's success. “I am fortunate to have Brad as a crucial partner in this business. While I assume the public-facing role, he provides

invaluable support by helping manage inventory, accounting, large equipment cleaning, and physical tasks,” she says.

The military experience has also played a role in their business success. “His military experience has instilled in him strong leadership and problem-solving skills essential for running a successful business. We make a great team with our combined skills and backgrounds,” Amanda says.

Todd Kessler served a decade in the U.S. Army, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. After medically retiring as a Sergeant First Class in 2011, he and his wife Bethany were looking for a path to owning their own business. Their business, All American Pool Servicing (AllAmericanPoolsAZ.com), was born out of frustration.

Todd relates that they needed weekly pool maintenance on their North Peoria home but quickly grew frustrated when multiple companies failed to even show up to provide them with a quote. Todd and Bethany decided to build a company that would show up for its customers based on the core values of dedication, integrity, and precision.

All American Pool Servicing

“We wanted to build a company that helps people by simply showing up and following through,” relates Bethany. “After partnering with a couple of seasoned pool pros, we have built a company based on principles of integrity and honor.”

All American Pool Servicing offers numerous services to keep your pool clean, clear, comfortable, and swimready. They provide pool cleaning, pool repair, and tile cleaning but specialize in weekly maintenance.

“Our crew will visit and complete a full checklist that includes testing water chemistry to ensure we are treating each pool appropriately, inspecting equipment, and providing all of the basics to ensure everything is pristine,” explains Todd.

As residents of North Peoria, the Kesslers know what works best for the area. All American Pool Servicing takes pride in keeping your pool clean and making it a place of joy and relaxation.

Nestled on the picturesque shores of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin, Door County (DoorCounty.com) offers the perfect romantic escape for a serene summer getaway. With its charming small towns, scenic waterfronts, and abundant outdoor activities, this peninsula is an enchanting destination that invites relaxation and reconnection.

Lautenbach's Orchard, Fish Creek

SCENIC BEAUTY AND NATURAL WONDERS

Door County’s 300 miles of shoreline provide endless opportunities to immerse yourself in the region’s natural beauty. Start your day with a sunrise stroll along the sandy shores of Whitefish Dunes State Park. If you’re feeling adventurous, head to Peninsula State Park, where hiking and biking trails offer breathtaking views of Green Bay.

Don’t miss the iconic Cana Island Lighthouse. A short walk or wagon ride across the causeway brings you to this historic site, where you can climb the 97 steps of the lighthouse for panoramic views of Lake Michigan.

QUAINT TOWNS AND CULTURAL CHARM

The small towns of Door County are brimming with character and charm, each offering unique experiences. In Fish Creek, you can browse boutiques, art galleries, and cozy cafés. While there, stop by DC Chocolate Design to pick up handmade truffles and molded chocolates.

Celebrate cherry blossom season in May, or pick your own cherries from mid-July to mid-August at Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Winery & Market while in Fish Creek. The market serves freshly baked cherry pies, juice, and wine.

Ephraim’s whitewashed buildings and serene waterfront transport you to a simpler, timeless era, and you’ll find a haven for art lovers in Egg Harbor. Stroll through its vibrant streets to discover local crafts, galleries, and restaurants serving delicious farm-to-table cuisine. For an evening of entertainment, catch a live performance at the Peninsula Players Theatre, one of the country’s oldest professional resident summer theaters.

After you wander along the waterfront in Sister Bay, stop at Door County Creamery to sample fresh Wisconsin cheese from the family farm.

ROMANTIC DINING EXPERIENCES

Dining in Door County is a delightful experience. Start your day with a memorable breakfast at either White Gull Inn in Fish Creek or Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant in Sister Bay. At White Gull Inn, opt for the cherry-stuffed French toast. At Al Johnson’s, enjoy the traditional Swedish pancakes with lingonberries—and look for the baby goats who graze on the grass roof!

Fragrant Isle, Washington Island
Peach Barn Farmhouse & Brewery, Sister Bay
Downtown Sister Bay

Treat yourself to a traditional fish boil at the Old Post Office Restaurant in Ephraim, where the dramatic boiling process is a bigger draw than the boiled whitefish, potatoes, and onions served in the restaurant.

Enjoy a casual dining experience at the lake view Wilson’s Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor in Ephraim since 1906. The classic Door County landmark boasts an old-fashioned soda fountain, home-brewed draft root beer, tasty burgers, and ice cream.

For a more upscale, romantic dining experience, book a table at Carrington Restaurant at The Landmark Resort in Egg Harbor. Arrange for a sunset dinner to watch the brilliant colors over Lake Michigan. In nearby Bailey’s Harbor, Chives Door County serves unforgettable farm-to-table food.

UNFORGETTABLE ACTIVITIES FOR TWO

Your romantic getaway wouldn’t be complete without sharing unique experiences. Hop on the Washington Island Ferry for a day trip across Death’s Door to Washington

Island. Stop by Fragrant Isle, where 30,000 lavender plants bloom from June through August. After browsing the shop for lavender items, stop by Le Café for lunch and dessert. Under the direction of its French-born owner, Le Café serves up the best croissants this side of the pond.

Wine lovers will adore Door County’s wineries. Visit Stone’s Throw Winery, Anchored Roots Vineyard & Winery, or Door Peninsula Winery to sample local vintages while enjoying the picturesque countryside. If you prefer beer or cider, Peach Barn Farmhouse & Brewery offers some unique options, while Island Orchard Cider serves cider made from local apples, pears, and hazelnuts.

CREATE FOREVER MEMORIES

Door County, Wisconsin, offers everything you need for a romantic summer escape. Whether you’re strolling along the shoreline, savoring a candlelit dinner, or enjoying peaceful moments together, this destination promises memories you’ll cherish long after summer.

Broadway Ball Returns!

Disco Fever with a Purpose at Arizona Broadway Theatre

Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) is hosting the Broadway Ball on Saturday, February 22nd, at 7701 West Paradise Lane. This year's theme: Disco Fever with a Purpose! Broadway Ball 2025: Studio 54 will be an exciting evening of entertainment featuring signature cocktails, three-course dining, live auction packages, and performances from some of ABT’s top talent.

According to Brad York, President of the ABT Board of Trustees, they chose the theme—Disco Fever with a Purpose—to showcase that the evening is about entertainment as well as fundraising.

"Our goal at Broadway Ball 2025: Studio 54 is to bring the fun to fund-raising," explains York. "It's going to be a great time for those attending—all supporting the programs, mission, and vision at Arizona Broadway Theatre (AZBroadway.org)."

"For two decades, ABT has not only entertained but also enriched our community, fostering creativity, collaboration, and a love for the performing arts," explains Kiel Klaphake, ABT's co-founder and executive producer, with his wife, Cassandra. What's Not to Love?

RUGGED RELIABILITY MEETS MODERN COMFORT IN THE 2025 SUBARU FORESTER SPORT

ARTICLE BY ANGEL FUCHS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUBARU

Stylish, safe, and sporty. The 2025 Subaru Forester Sport offers sleek style, dependability, comfort, and off-road capability, bridging the gap between personality and practicality.

I recently test-drove a 2025 Forester Sport in Crystal White Pearl. My only complaint about this SUV is that one week was not enough! We loved this ride and will consider it when we are in the market for a new vehicle.

NEW LOOK AND AN EVEN SAFER RIDE

This compact SUV has been redesigned for a sophisticated, stylish look with updated technology. Subaru’s hallmark allwheel drive makes the Forester ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and those in colder climates—but it's practical for driving anywhere.

Subaru has become synonymous with driver safety. Now, the 2025 Forester comes with EyeSight Driver Assist Technology for an even more confident driving experience.

COMFORT AND TECHNOLOGY INSIDE

Although a compact SUV, the Forester felt roomy and comfortable. We took it on a short road trip and were impressed with the smooth, quiet ride and excellent gas mileage. The back cargo space is generously sized and easily fit our three carry-on suitcases without requiring us to lower the rear seats.

For 2025, Subaru introduces the 11.6-inch Subaru Starlink Multimedia system, which allows you to stay connected wherever you go and is standard on the Forester Sport model. The large, high-definition tablet-style screen makes viewing directions easy. The panoramic power moonroof and numerous charging ports are also standard on the Sport model.

The Forester Sport includes an all-weather package, dark-tint privacy glass, and a 10-way power driver's seat.

STYLISH EXTERIOR

Our favorite 2025 Subaru Forester Sport feature is the bronze-finish exterior accents, including the 19-inch alloy wheels. These accents give the SUV a unique and beautiful look and add a bit of luxury to its otherwise sporty appearance.

THE STATS

• Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)

• DOHC 4-cylinder engine

• 16.6-gallon fuel tank capacity

• 25 city/32 highway/28 MPG

Building the Perfect Bouquet

Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in many ways. Some people choose to go out for dinner and a movie, others hire a private chef for a romantic meal at home, some buy chocolates and find a fun activity in town, and some couples go out of town for an exciting getaway! One Valentine’s Day staple is giving a bouquet of flowers to someone special. Flowers are the gift that say I love you and can be given to your spouse, children, and mom. As a child, my father always got me roses on Valentine’s Day until I met my husband and he took over the tradition. A bouquet of flowers can say many things as each flower has a different meaning. If you’re wanting to say something special to the ones you love this Valentine’s Day, take a look at our list of three popular flowers, what they mean, and what flowers to pair them with.

Roses

LOVE & ROMANCE

Roses are by far the most popular flower to give on Valentine’s Day. They are beautiful by themselves or you can add Baby’s Breath to enhance the bouquet. These two make a romantic bouquet and are the perfect flowers to give to someone special.

Lilies

PURITY & FERTILITY

Lilies come in a variety of colors and are eye-catching! For a softer looking bouquet, pair your lilies with carnations. These two combined are fun and heartwarming and are a great gift for anyone.

Tulips

PERFECT FOR DEEP LOVE

A bouquet of tulips will brighten any space! Adding some Ranunculus, also known as buttercup, will complement the tulips wonderfully. These flowers have a refreshing look that will decorate any home beautifully in a crystal vase.
