Celebrate The Arts

MARCH 2016

I

t was a bitterly cold December day in Paris, yet the inside of The Louvre was filled with the warm glow of lights and the bustle of people. I remember just standing there in the corridor, absolutely speechless in the presence of such a great work. No, it wasn’t the Mona Lisa, it was something lesser-known to the general public— Antonio Canova’s Cupid and Psyche. I remember it was the first time a work of art had really spoken to me. I couldn’t explain what it was about that sculpture— maybe the way the cold, hard marble revealed such a depth of love and passion as the two figures locked in an embrace— that touched my soul so profoundly. As I traveled throughout Europe, I was lucky enough to experience many famous works of art—from Botticelli’s La Primavera, to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and Pieta, to Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa—yet none of them spoke to me the way this sculpture did. During my year abroad, I not only gained a greater sense of appreciation for the works, but also for the artists. To this day, it still amazes me how someone could dream up something so spectacular and then translate it onto a medium. Take, for example, Michelangelo’s David. If you look closely at the sculpture, you can see each protruding vein on his hand, each curve of his throat and each ripple of muscle, as if he was about to be set in motion. And to think that one man created this masterpiece out of a piece of marble just amazes me. In this spirit, our March “Arts” Issue recognizes both North Scottsdale artists and their works, featuring stories on realist painters Priscilla Nelson and Don Clapper; Plumb Performing Arts Center, where dance becomes art in motion; and Verve Studio, which aims to create the next generation of actors.

Reel Works VERVE STUDIO OFFERS AN ACTING EXPERIENCE UNLIKE ANY OTHER IN THE VALLEY

Though Verve Studio offers a wide array of age-appropriate classes for kids, tweens and teens, and has always been the marquee place in the Valley for working actors to continually push themselves, they have also crafted a niche for adults who have always wanted to pursue acting but never allowed themselves the time. “In the past, they felt discouraged that perhaps the time had passed, or they just could not do it,” says Melby. “But now they feel that they are at a point in their life where they are ready and want to finally pursue acting.” The training at Verve Studio focuses on both the craft and the business side of acting, seeking to create a flexible and diverse actor.

“But now they feel that they are at a point in their life where they are ready and want to finally pursue acting.” They start with a series of foundational classes that introduce the cornerstones of technique on which to build upon, followed by complementary classes designed to round-off one’s skill set and prepare the actor to be successful in many different mediums—from film, television, theater, commercials, and more. While many arrive at the studio with lofty acting goals, others show up simply wanting a few pointers on presenting in front of audiences, or even just some help on how to be a bit more outgoing in a crowd. “You have to take chances and you have to take risks,” explains

arents are constantly looking for creative and artistic outlets for their children. From painting and drawing to theater, dance and music, the hope is always to ignite a passion and discover an outlet that will help pave a path toward a lifetime of continued learning, discovery and satisfaction. As an actor moving to Arizona from Los Angeles eleven years ago, Amanda Melby never wavered from the want to continue pursuing her passion, but found few options in the Valley that would allow her to push herself forward in her ongoing development as an actor. “I wanted a place to continue my scene studies like I was doing in LA, and though I found a bunch of beginning and intermediate classes here, quite honestly, I was more qualified than the instructors, so I decided to start my own studio,” says Melby. Within the year, she opened Verve Studio, which she shaped into a place that both helps hone the skills of high-level working actors and introduces newcomers to the craft in a healthy and comfortable environment. 14

Melby. “A lot of people come here who are very shy and are looking for some help to work through that. We do tons of improvisation, memorization, thinking on your feet, and even focus on connecting your mind to your body. There are a lot of skills taught through acting that have benefits in many different aspects of life.” For more information on the studio, including

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

S

Plumb Performing Arts Center Stays On Pointe When It Comes to Nurturing Dancers

urprisingly, the idea for Scottsdalebased Plumb Performing Arts Center was conceived in a small town in Iowa right near the Nebraska border. This is the hometown of the studio’s founder, Lisa Plumb, and the place where she first fell in love with dance. “At the time there was no dance teacher in my town, so my father had to drive me across the river into Omaha for dance twice a week,” says Lisa. “That’s all I could take, twice a week, but I loved it so much.” After teaching dance for a number of years in both Iowa and Nebraska, Lisa thought it was time for a change and headed west to Scottsdale, Arizona, where she opened Plumb Performing Arts Center as a neighborhood dance studio. However, big changes came for the studio when Lisa’s daughter, Jordan, started showing a serious interest in dance. Before long, they added a pre-professional training program and dedicated themselves to nurturing and helping their students grow as both dancers and individuals. BUILDING A SOLID BASE

Always committed to providing their dancers with a strong understanding of the fundamentals, the studio puts a strong emphasis on teaching ballet. “Ballet is the base; you can really do anything if you have a ballet background. That’s why our kids, depending on their age, are required to take a certain amount of ballet, so they can build upon it with other styles,” says Lisa.

DANCE IN BLOOM (CON TI N U ED)

Not only is the studio committed to providing its dancers with the essential building blocks, they also bring in only the best when it comes to teachers. “We’ve really stepped up the program to the point where our goal is not just to have a recital, but to really build dancers,” says Lisa’s husband, Tom. “Now we are at the point where our kids have received close to $750,000 in college scholarships for dance. That’s what this program is really all about, helping our students obtain their goals rather than going after a trophy.” PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Plumb Performing Arts Center also brings in a host of master choreographers from New York City and Los Angeles to hold workshops with the dancers, ensuring that they are fully exposed to all different kinds of teachers, styles and techniques to become as well-rounded and adaptable as possible. “Almost every month we have someone here from the outside dance world to teach our students—from professional ballet and jazz dancers to commercial dancers from LA to musical theatre performers—and I think that it is such a valuable part of what we do here at the studio because it really benefits the kids,” says Lisa. THE JOURNEY AHEAD

What really makes Plumb Performing Arts Center stand out is their passion for not only helping students grow as dancers, but also for nurturing them as individuals. “We know that each student’s path is very different, and we really try to find what those paths are for them, then give them all the tools, support and networking we can,” says Lisa. 26

One of the steps the studio has taken to do this is by building a strong relationship with NYCDA—a prestigious New York Citybased dance organization dedicated to teaching dancers the very best of technique and style, and raising college monies for aspiring professional dancers. Throughout the year, dancers at the studio train together, support each other and work together as a group while they travel and compete in NYCDA competitions, becoming a close-knit family along the way. “It’s really inspiring to be with the same people year after year and to see your fellow members grow,” says Lisa’s daughter, Jordan, who has been with the studio her entire life. “Its amazing to do something you love with the people you love.” LOVE OF DANCE

At the heart of everything the studio does is a profound dedication to nurturing those dancers who are truly committed to their art; who don’t just want to dance, but have to dance. Those dancers, the ones who are constantly pushing themselves to attain the highest level of their art, are the heart and soul of the studio. As Jordan says, “It’s about setting your mind to one specific thing; practicing day and night, sacrificing some things, and blocking out the world to really see the vision and path that you want to take.” Although the vision may be different for every dancer, there is no doubt that everyone at Plumb Performing Arts Center will do everything in their power to make it a reality. That is devotion to art. For more information on the studio, please visit PlumbPerformingArtsCenter.com.

The

RENAISSANCE of Realism

Artists Priscilla Nelson and Don Clapper On the Genre's Recent Resurgence ARTICLE DANIELLE ACCOVELLI | PHOTOGRAPHY IMAGES BY MICHAEL

28

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | March 2016

A

lthough realism may depict people and objects as they appear in everyday life, it also has an uncanny ability to tell a story with each exquisitely-rendered detail “Realism is a lot like the movies, where it literally pulls you into the scene; or if you’re looking at a portrait, that person comes alive,” says artist Don Clapper. “To me, that’s quality realism because it brings you right into what the artist was thinking about.” “That’s when I know I’ve been successful, when someone looks at a painting and comes up with a totally different scenario than what I was thinking. They are still getting the story, but also putting a little of themselves into the painting,” says artist Priscilla Nelson, also commenting on realism’s ability to tell a story. Not only does realism tell a story with life-like quality works, it is also firmly rooted in precision, detail and the classical techniques of drawing, shading and capturing light. “When you shade with a pencil it’s really no different than shading with oil, acrylic or water color; all you’re doing is learning a new medium,” says Nelson. However, the technique of drawing seems to have begun slipping away in recent years, as Clapper comments, “A lot of realism painters come to me and say that they had to teach themselves drawing because the emphasis in school was put more on theory than the classical skills and techniques.” This might be one of the contributing factors that has led to the increased popularity of more modern genres like abstract expressionism, cubism and impressionism. “You see these genres a lot more in art shows and galleries now, and for a while it seemed that if you weren’t distorting the human figure you weren’t an artist,” says Nelson. Despite the heavy prevalence of these newer art forms, realism has experienced a revival of its own in recent years. At the forefront of this is the Scottsdale-based International Guild of Realism (IGOR), of which Clapper is a Founding Charter Member and Nelson is a member. The organization is dedicated to advancing realism in fine art and promoting the careers of its 340 international artists by holding at least one major show at a top realism gallery each year. IGOR doesn’t just accept anyone either, as members have to go through a rigorous process to be juried in and are required to submit works to each event. However, the advantages are well worth it. “I just find IGOR to be very dedicated and consistent, because they know how to educate the public and support their artists and the genre of realism,” says Nelson. Now, a closer look at two types of realism through the eyes of their respective artists. CONTINUED >

RENAISSANCE OF REALISM (CON TI N U ED)

PRISCILL A NELSON Contemporary Realism THE STYLE:

“I like the genre of contemporary realism because I can get to the point where the paining has one foot in super-realism and the other one still in the painting process; so that the viewer can tell that it’s still a painting.” THE SUBJECT MATTER:

Nelson’s inspiration comes from movement and the way light plays off of textiles in both real life and under water. “When I first saw the movement of textiles underwater and the way the light diffused off of them, it was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.” THE TECHNIQUE AND PROCESS:

Utilizing her extensive training in classical techniques, Nelson’s process is very much rooted in drawing, shading and blending. “I thoroughly enjoy the process of drawing with a pencil first, whether its just key lines or planning in more detail,” says Nelson. “Blending is also a huge part of my process, and sometimes I can have up to 15-30 layers of paint on my canvas, all blended until every detail is smooth.” More information on Nelson and her works can be found at NelsonArt.com. 30

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | March 2016

DON CL APPER Dramatic Realism

DON CLAPPER: DRAMATIC REALISM THE STYLE:

“My new female figure paintings done in this style have many modern aspects like dramatic cast shadows, but are still painted with a very tight, realistic approach.” THE SUBJECT MATTER:

Clapper finds inspiration in what intrigues him most, including vibrant lighting, interesting composition, skillful technique and blends of exciting color. “For me, it’s about just setting up composition in the studio and using multiple light sources, because right now, light and color are the most important things in making a composition pop and snap.” THE TECHNIQUE AND PROCESS:

Clapper uses vivid, colorful lighting to create drama and add mystery to his figures. “I do a lot of thin layering with oil paints and glazing to build up the surface to where it becomes very luminous when lit correctly.” More information on Clapper and his works can be found at ClapperArt.com.

Kingston’s mission has always been to offer the highest quality of Irish product and deliver an authentic Irish experience. “The Chymist spells community. We offer a quality product, good prices and a great experience,” comments Kingston. “We want everyone to have what the Irish call Craic; a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere where good times are had by all.” AUTHENTIC IRISH FOOD

I started my tasting with a juicy Chymist Rasher Cheeseburger, served with Rasher bacon, cheese, lettuce and tomato, along with a generous portion of hand-cut fries. Next, I sampled the fish and chips, a nice sized portion of cod served with hand-cut fries. The fish batter was light and crispy and paired wonderfully with their tasty tartar sauce. The braised corned beef and sautéed cabbage was also extremely good. The corned beef was thick sliced and lean

It’s made with ground lamb, root vegetables, savory gravy and topped with mashed potatoes. It was very moist and flavorful—one of the best I’ve tasted. I highly recommend you save room for the homemade bread pudding served with a delicious vanilla custard. It’s the perfect treat to end a meal. Chef Samuel Russell also offers many other selections, including appetizers, flatbread pizza, salads, sandwiches and entrees. A full menu is listed on their website. Scottsdale Orthodontic Care GIVING PATIENTS SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT ARTICLE ALISON STANTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I

n his 25-year career as an orthodontist, Dr. Daniel Grob, D.D.S., M.S., has done more than simply provide top-quality care to his many patients. Grob, who opened Scottsdale Orthodontic Care two years ago after selling his successful orthodontic practice of over two decades in Tucson, is also devoted to changing the way people think about going to the orthodontist. “I was on a mission to change the perception of patients, who often think going to the orthodontist means getting this gadget or that gadget,” he says, adding that he likes to refer to Scottsdale Orthodontic Care as a primary care orthodontic practice. “I’m trying to offer a different kind of orthodontic experience that’s not just about braces,” says Grob. For example, he works with younger kids on habit correction, like thumb sucking and nail biting, as well as medical and dental issues that affect their facial development and smile. “We use braces and aligners when appropriate on teenagers, as well as work with dentists to create the best smile with adults,” he says. Although teenagers make up the bulk of his business, Grob says he and his staff work with patients from ages 6 to 60. Grob also believes in having kids evaluated early—not so he can put braces on them, but so he can check them for potential long-term problems that can be more readily addressed when young. “About 20 percent of kids ages six to nine get braces, but in many cases we can put orthodontic care on hold. Kids will come into the office and be evaluated, then are told to come back in one to three years. It is amazing the number of potential problems we discover at this age that require no appliances or braces.” Patients who need braces have a variety of options to choose from at Scottsdale Orthodontic Care, which offers everything from

36

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | March 2016

traditional metal braces to Invisalign and very clear cosmetic braces. Unlike some other practices that recommend removing teeth, Grob says he prefers a much more conservative approach. Another way Scottsdale Orthodontic Care stands apart from the competition is by staying on top of the most current treatments, including digital X-rays, photography and scanning; smaller and more comfortable appliances; stronger, gentler wires that will last longer between visits and no headgear. Grob is also very proud of his skilled and friendly staff, some of whom have worked with him for 20 years. A couple even moved up from Tucson to Scottsdale, which he saw as a wonderful compliment. Grob also gives back to the community as founder of the Annual Smiles for Charity Event Program. So far, Scottsdale Orthodontic Care has raised over $25,000 for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the Scottsdale and Paradise Valley School Districts, sports leagues, charter schools and more. “We also offer incentives to our patients through our Family Smile Programs,” he says. Grob, who has taught at Marquette University as well as community college, and was President of a Dental Society for 15 years, likes to stay up-to-date with the latest orthodontic trends through his work as Editorial Director of Orthotown Magazine. But what he really enjoys is successfully transforming a person’s face and smile. “I love the way orthodontics is the creation of something. I’m kind of like a tinkerer, and creating a smile within a person’s face is kind of like being an artist.” For more information, call 480.634.7731 or visit ScottsdaleOrthodonticCare.com.

Parting Thoughts

The Creative Process WORDS TARA MILLER

I

sat there for a couple of hours, doing yoga, eating lunch, thinking about writing this article. What inspires me to paint? Or write songs? The creative process. Hmmm, hmmm.... twiddle, doodle, blank page. Truth is, I don't know how the creative process happens, it just does. There is no one way that my creativity comes to fruition. Sometimes I can sit down and spit out a song or a painting in a short time. Other times, it's labored and takes weeks. I don't know how it's going to turn out in the end…never how I imagined it in the beginning. And that's okay; that’s what makes it fun. Sometimes I surround myself with inspiring images: a sky I want to fall into, flowers I think are pretty, a certain look or glance, a flowing dress, a movement, a regal animal, the curves of a beautiful instrument... I paint what I want to see on my own walls. It's not for you. It's for me. Often they coincide with what is going on in my life. What inspires me to paint? People. Nature. Music. Poetry. Obsession. Passion. Sadness. Death. Heartbreak. Loving. Living. I don't paint to make you want to stand up for some political agenda, or because all the designers say this style is the new trend, or because these are the sizes and colors consumers are buying at the moment. If I did, there would be no passion, no yearning, no desire to get it out. Because then it would be for you, and not me. I'm selfish with my creativity. I'm only doing it to get it out of my system; because I need to. I can't ignore it. I don't feel right if I do. Sometimes I look at a freshly gessoed canvas, or sit in front of the keyboard with no lights, only candles, and say, “Whoever would like to be a part of this process right now, you are welcome to join.” I've had people come up to me on the street and say, “That looks exactly like my dead sister!” The painting they are referring to is called “Life is Fleeting,” which I painted at a time in my life where a handful of relatives and friends all died in a short span of time. Coincidence? I don't think so. Divine interaction is more like it. The music that I write and the paintings that I birth are like bookmarks, reminders of a time in my life where I loved deeply, was heartbroken, pensive, inspired, ebullient, missing someone, or happy to meet someone new. I live. I feel. Therefore, I must create. Living life is my muse. People betray you. They love you. People you love die. People you love, love you deeply back. It's all worth it because music and art help us remember, and figure it all out.
