Celebrate Spring!

APRIL 2016

S

pring is the quintessential time for growth and new beginnings, as the newfound warm weather and abundance of sunshine seems to spark a feeling of change, joy and excitement in all. And nothing better represents this time of year than a beautiful blooming garden.

When I was a little girl growing up in Connecticut I always looked forward to the coming of spring, as that meant it was time to head to the gardening supply store and buy all that we needed to plant our vegetable garden— a sunken little plot of land in our backyard that would soon yield a bounty of ripe red tomatoes, purple eggplant, bright yellow and green peppers and fragrant basil during the summer months. I remember digging into the moist plot with my spade in hand and mother by my side as I tenderly placed the seeds in the earth and covered them with a thick layer of soil. It was certainly a picturesque scene with fresh dew covering the lush green grass, Easter lilies popping their heads out of the ground and birds chirping overhead. When I moved to Arizona some years later, I thought all those dream-like days spent gardening were gone forever. Little did I know that Arizona offered just as much blooming beauty as my childhood home—I just needed to be a little more creative in finding it. My first experience of spring in the desert came early one morning when I walked outside and found a single white flower budding out of a cactus. In the weeks following, I watched in wonder as all the cacti and dry bushes in my backyard came alive again with a colorful array of unique flowers, making my heart flutter with joyous nostalgia every time I saw a new bloom. In this month’s “Spring and Gardening” issue we celebrate Arizona’s diverse beauty, from local farmers looking to nourish the community with healthy, fresh fare; to tips on how to grow and preserve herbs in the desert; to a wonderful restaurant serving-up garden fresh delights. We hope you enjoy this most joyous time of year! Until Next Month,

P

hoenix is usually seen as a barren place. However, horticulturist, landscape consultant and certified arborist, Noelle Johnson, is

out to change that. “My passion is to show people how to create beautiful, drought-tolerant gardens using plants that will thrive in our climate,” says Johnson. As the writer behind the blog AZ Plant Lady, (AZPlantLady.com) Johnson shows her readers that, yes, you can have a thriving, lush garden in the desert. It just requires some work.

Growing Herbs

Herbs love the sun, and need six to eight hours of sunshine per day. The best environ-

ment for herbs is a vegetable garden, but if you don’t already have one, you can place them in a pot. Johnson recommends a container that’s one-and-a-half to two-feet wide at the top so the herbs have space to grow. When it comes to watering, remember this: herbs hate soggy soil. Avoid potting soil, as it tends to hold on to moisture. Water deeply—or let the irrigation drip run for about two to three hours—and allow the soil to dry out before you water again. You’ll want the top inch of the soil to be dry. Stick your finger in to about the first knuckle, which is roughly one inch, to test it. If it’s barely moist, it’s time to water again. To extract the best flavors, use the herbs within six months after cutting. Above all, you’ll want to spend time researching ways to maintain a thriving garden. “It really matters to do just a little bit of research about the plants before you put them in the ground,” says Johnson. “My passion is showing people that a garden in the desert can be so much more than rock and cactus.”

Drying/ Preserving Herbs If you can’t use your herbs immediately, dry them.

“What’s really great about living here is that herbs dry very quickly because we’re hot and dry,” says Johnson. You can tie the herbs together with twine and hang them. Consider covering the herbs with a paper bag to keep dust off. You can also lay them out on a baking sheet, covering it with a towel, then leave them to air out. You’ll know they’re finished drying when the herbs are brittle or crumble after being touched. Another preserving option is to chop-up the herbs, put them in water or olive oil, freeze them and then add the cubes to cooking.

HERE ARE SOME OF JOHNSON’S FAVORITE HERBS TO GROW IN PHOENIX:

Here are some of Johnson's favorite herbs to grow in Phoenix:

BASIL

Basil

Seeing as basil dies after Phoenix’s first frost, plant it at the end of February or the beginning of March. Although basil doesn’t do well in the cold, Johnson says it’s one of the easiest plants to grow and has a nice fragrance that many people enjoy. Putting

to elevate those dishes. You can also make basil salt.

CHIVE

Chive

This herb grows year-round. Johnson says she likes chives because of their “delicate onion flavor.” Like basil, chives also look great sprinkled on top of pasta. However, she says chives need to be used immediately, as they lose flavor when cooked. Chives can also be used on a baked potato or eggs.

Thyme

This herb grows year-round, and Johnson says it tastes great with poultry and pork. She suggests adding thyme to gravy too.

Walking into the living room, one’s eye is immediately drawn to a massive fireplace situated between the two sliding glass doors. This completely custom, rustic beauty allows one to take in all of Arizona’s picture-perfect sunsets while snuggling in front of a blazing fire. Like the fireplace, the entertainment center is also a work of art, done in a Southwest style meant to reflect the natural elements of the desert with dark, stained wood and soaring heights. Tucked away toward the rear of the home is the master suite with attached bath. The whole back wall of the bedroom is adorned with a manufactured stone that was meticulously placed one-by-one, while a sliding glass door leading out to a private patio occupies the adjacent wall. There’s also a formal dining room and home office at the front of the home and two guest bedrooms with adjoining baths off to the opposite side, all affording the same spectacular desert views found in the home’s other rooms. “Our personality is really here in this house, and it has quickly become part of us and who we are,” says Hainy. singh farms Ken Singh’s family has been farming the same piece of land northeast of Thomas and the 101 since 1947. While his father farmed naturally, his uncle adopted the practice of using chemicals, which paid off in the form of profits. However, when a young Ken would goad his father by pointing to his uncle’s productivity, the elder refused to relent. “Chase life,” he would tell his son. It may have taken a while for those words to sink in, but chasing life is exactly what Ken Singh is doing today. “If you don’t eat well, I can guarantee that you’re going to get sick. It’s just a matter of when and how long,” says Singh, who besides growing, has also positioned himself as a leading soil expert in the region and produces his own selection of compost and fertilizers. “That’s what our grandfather’s taught us, but we forgot and went into the chemical age,” says Singh. “But I tell everybody, going backwards is actually forward thinking.”

And the rewards for getting some dirt under his fingers have been well worth it in the long run. “Back when I started, there was nothing here,” says Singh, pointing to the historical photos of his land hung on the wall of his indoor market, then out to land rich with vegetation under a canopy of mesquite trees his family built outside. “All this is to show that in the middle of the desert, and without any chemicals, one old boy can build a farm and feed you.” For more information on Singh Farms, visit them on their Facebook page at Facebook.com/SinghFarms.

NOURISHING BODY & SOUL

(CON TI N U ED)

the simple farm For Lylah and Michael Ledner, the journey toward small suburban farming was a bit more of an unexpected venture. Inspired by the motto “bring dignity back to the dining table,” in 2009 the couple seized the opportunity to develop a three-acre plot of land owned by the church where Michael is a pastor. Still owned by the church, the Ledners invested the proceeds from the sale of their own home, moved to the property, and got to work. As unexperienced growers, theirs was, and continues to be, a journey of trial-and-error. Beginning at the back of the property, they started building a series of garden beds and a chicken coop. As the couple found stability and success, they built more beds, and in 2010 adopted two Nubian dairy 24

goats from Northern Arizona, whose milk would inspire Lylah to learn how to make goat cheese and perfect a recipe for caramels inspired by a small confection shop from her youth spent in France. Her goat milk caramels became a finalist for the coveted Good Food Award in

San Francisco, and now with distribution across the country, a source of local pride for her small farm in the corner of Scottsdale. “We believe that there should be something like this every two-square-miles, and what’s important is that the people who live

around things like this get on board,” explains Ledner. “Farm members cook, they see the value, and they offer the support. After the relationship and community is built, the coolest thing is when they start to talk to one another and share recipes and experiences.” For Ledner, however, hers is a venture that goes beyond just taste. It’s about the sights, smells, sounds and feel of something fresh, pure and real. “I am all about beauty and aesthetics,” says Ledner, who takes pride in being able to produce everything her members need for their meal, all the way down to the f lowers for the centerpiece. “Whenever there’s an intense situation in the world, I go plant f lowers. I feel that if somebody drives by, perhaps they will pause – I call them beauty pauses – and their heart will change or they will be touched by something they see.” Whether it nourishes the body from the insideout, or the soul from the outside-in, both Lylah and Ken agree that raising an awareness for what fresh, healthy food looks, smells and tastes like is really just a small part of the bigger picture. on the agenda. The quaint little restaurant, mere feet from the Marie Pampoen beach, was incredible. The food was fresh, the vibe was relaxed, and at times it was tough to tell where the restaurant ended and vacationers picnicking on the beach began. After our seaside lunch, we were scheduled to meet Eric at Eric’s ATVs for a fast-paced four-wheel excursion on the southeast edge of the island. Upon arrival, we met our guides and were given a safety demonstration. Shortly after, everyone was mounted and following our guides up and down dusty pathways, zigzagging through the brush. Roughly thirty minutes in, the guides motioned for everyone to stop and kill their engines. We took a break before they led a short climb through a series of caves, where we summited atop a bluff and were rewarded with a pristine view of the Caribbean Sea— blue and vast in all its glory. I awoke on the final day and walked the Santa Barbara Resort grounds one last time, taking pictures of the gorgeous bay, sad to see the trip come to an end. We checked out and headed for brunch at Hofi Cas Cora, a stylish restaurant that uses farm-to-table ingredients, hosts yoga sessions and cooking classes for kids. Their menu was simple but their dishes were absolutely phenomenal, and after our meal we were able to tour the gardens with one of the owners. She kept using the word “community” when describing the restaurant’s patrons, and it made me think of the community of Curacao—one where people shout hello from their cars, will lend a helping hand, and where everyone will greet you with comradery and a smile.

A HISTORY OF

CHILDHELP ORGANIZATION IS CHANGING THE WORLD ONE CHILD AT A TIME

ARTICLE DANIELLE ACCOVELLI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

C

hildhelp began amidst the glitz and glam of 1950s Hollywood, where founders and friends, Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson, were working as actresses on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet Show. As fate would have it, in 1969 O’Meara and Fedderson were recruited to perform for our troops overseas and headed out for a typhoon ravaged Tokyo, Japan. One stormy evening, the two adventurous friends dared to brave the weather and ventured outside, where they were immediately struck with a sight unlike any other they had experienced before. “We came across 11 stranded children that were the picture of devastation. They didn’t have jackets or shoes, their knuckles were cracked and bleeding from the cold, and they kept crying. So we took them back to the room and gave them food and a hot bath,” says O’Meara. The next morning, on the brink of giving up on finding an orphanage that would take the children, the friends came across a woman living in a hut with 10 other orphans who finally agreed to take them in. “That night after our show, we stopped and explained to the servicemen that we needed their help to build up the orphanage,” says O’Meara. “So that was kind of like our first fundraiser for children.” 30

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | April 2016

Things took off from there, with the newly expanded orphanage in Japan housing over 100 children, and the creation of International Orphans Incorporated back in the states. The idea of having O’Meara and Fedderson head the movement to help abused and neglected children was planted by none other than Nancy Regan, who approached the women at a charity luncheon. “We investigated the issue further and realized that we had to create national awareness about what was happening to these children, and a safe place where they could be healed from every angle,” says O’Meara. That vision came true with the opening of the Childhelp Village in Beaumont California—the first residential treatment center in the country for abused children. HEALING IN ARIZONA

Over the years, Childhelp’s programs have spread throughout the country, with a few notable ones here in Arizona. The Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe program works toward ensuring every child in Arizona is provided with the skills needed to identify and report

abuse, while the Childhelp National Abuse Hotline provides a 24-hour, 365-day outlet staffed by professional crisis counselors. Then there’s the Childhelp Children’s Center of Arizona, which provides treatment, intervention and investigative services for children all under one roof, helping each child quickly get their story told and placed into a safe environment. “We have an outstanding program that does wonders with these children and turns lives around every day. I am just so proud of all the staff and volunteers who have helped Childhelp accomplish all that it has done over the years,” says Fedderson. WINGS OF HOPE

Another program unique to Arizona is Childhelp Wings, a parent-child charity organization that teaches children about giving back and identifying abuse situations. Each year, they host the Wings Fashion Show and Luncheon directly benefiting the Arizona chapter of Childhelp, with parents, grandparents and children participating as models. “What I really love about it is the children helping children aspect, because being a part of Wings really helps these children become educated about giving back to the community,” says Tiffany Qualye, co-chair of this year’s Wings Fashion Show. With 57 years under its belt, Childhelp shows no signs of slowing down, as both the organization’s members and its founders remain as passionate about the cause today as they did on day one. For

Parting Thoughts

New Beginnings WORDS ALISON STANTON

W

hen I was a little girl growing up in the Pacific Northwest, the first signs of spring were always found in the garden. I have fond memories of visiting my grandmother’s house after school and dashing out in the chilly March rain to her backyard to look for the tiniest hints of green emerging from the soggy soil. My grandma, who was blessed with a proverbial green thumb, enjoyed growing flowers from bulbs, and it always seemed that the cheerful crocus was the first one to peek through the dirt. While there would still be plenty of rain and cold weather ahead, those tiny green shoots gave me hope that winter was officially ending and a new beginning was upon us in the form of spring. Here in the Valley of the Sun, we have to come up with other ways to notice and welcome the coming of spring. While I’ve seen a few talented gardeners manage to successfully grow other traditional spring bulb flowers like daffodils and the occasional tulips, I have yet to find any crocus poking their way through the warm and dry desert soil. Because of our temperate climate, people who have not been to the Southwest often claim that we don’t have a change of seasons, but I’ve always maintained that we definitely do—we are just a bit more clever about looking at it. In addition to temperatures starting to warm up, local signs of spring also include the return of Spring Training, roses blooming to beat the

band and, if you look closely, the tall and spindly Ocotillo desert plant just starting to send out tentative shoots of growth. Another sure sign of spring can be found in our collective positive attitudes. As the late, great comedian Robin Williams once said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying let’s party!” When March 20 rolled around and you realized that the official first day of spring had come, did you feel that little jolt of energy, adrenaline and hope? I know I sure did. In fact, while January 1st gets all of the attention for its resolutions, new beginnings and promises of a shiny new year, I actually find that the start of spring lends itself to an even better fresh start. Maybe it’s because I’m too tired from all the copious and wonderful celebrating in December to really appreciate all that a new year has to offer, or maybe it’s because—like the crocus and ocotillo—I know in my heart that this is the perfect time of year to focus on new and wonderful positive changes. Hey, if Mother Nature uses this time of year for new life and beginnings, who am I to argue? So while the rose bushes are going nuts in your backyard and the Ocotillo are celebrating spring alongside freeways and medians, we should also feel free to revel in this time of year by embracing the promise of new life and rejuvenation.
