Celebrate Your Home! G
rowing up, it seemed like I was always moving. In fact, by the time I was a senior in high school, I had the art of packing down to a science—that is, if I even bothered to unpack at all. Although I have lived in many houses over the years, 11 to be exact, I will always consider my true home to be an adobe-style two-story in Queen Creek, Arizona. It was the first house that my parents actually owned, and I still remember the day we first saw it. We walked in the simply decorated house to find the owners cooking dinner and their young daughter playing with the dog in the backyard. Shortly after touring the home, we knew we had to make it ours. When we finally closed on the house, my parents’ smiles were so radiant that I thought they would outshine the Arizona sun. On a hot July day with temperatures boiling past 110-degrees, we moved the last of our old furniture into the home, and thus began the redecorating process. To make the home truly ours, we painted all the walls, added tile downstairs and hand-selected all of our furniture. I remember countless Saturdays making the one-hour trek into town to visit furniture stores and model homes, picking up fun and eclectic finds while spending time together as a family. During that time, I also learned some valuable lessons about furnishing a home; like never hang a chandelier before you get a dining room table, especially if you are tall, and although hanging real garlic from a pot rack for decoration may look nice, it certainly doesn’t smell so. When our house was finally finished we were pretty proud of our work, the interior reflecting a cozy Tuscan-meets-desert design. However, for me, it was so much more than that. Every single piece of furniture represented a memory, with the whole house coming together as a story of one of my family’s proudest moments and greatest achievements.

Homes & Hearts ANDREW BLOOM OF BVO LUXURY GROUP GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITIES HE’S HELPED BUILD ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
P
ositively disruptive! Andrew Bloom has built a brand around doing things differently. Shortly after graduating from ASU and working as a Headstart caseworker and housing advocate for the City of Phoenix, Andrew Bloom dove into the real estate business, where he has been helping shape the Valley’s industry for over three decades now. As a founding partner, in 2002 he helped form BVO Luxury Group, serving primarily the Paradise Valley and Scottsdale markets, and consistently ranks as one of the top performing RE/MAX agents in the world. The international saturation of RE/MAX works well with identifying the global consumers of our Valley’s real estate. With a list of accomplishments that includes the prestigious trifecta: RE/MAX Hall of Fame, Lifetime Achievement and Circle of Legends, he has SOLD over an astonishing half a billion
20
North Scottsdale Lifestyle | May 2016
dollars in residential real estate. Andrew has built his career on the cornerstones of integrity, hard work and discipline. Being in a business which has a natural impact on shaping the community, he has also embraced his unique position as an ambassador for the importance of giving back. “Real estate at its very core is grassroots and community-driven,” says Bloom. “It truly takes a village to have the kind of lifestyle that people would like to have. In order for that to happen, and for it to be sustainable, we all have to give and we all have to contribute. We all have to work together if the community is to work as intended.” For BVO Luxury Group, this is much more than an ideal- it is woven into how they do business. For each and every transaction
that’s closed, they give a percentage of the profits to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital on the behalf of their clients. But for Andrew, his wife Babs, and their four children, giving back is about more than just monetary donations. It is something that they have made much more personal. Multiple times a year, the family opens the doors to their home (affectionately named “la Casa de Bloom”) to help raise money for a variety of organizations, from Susan G. Komen and the Children’s Miracle Network, to their own children’s music academies and youth hockey clubs. Andrew estimates that over 20,000 people have come through his front door over the years to attend one of his family’s many charitable events. Of all of the events, none is bigger, nor more anticipated, than their annual Super Bowl Party. This year was the 11th edition of the event, which saw over 800 people come to not only watch the Big Game on over 30 televisions, but also to check out the petting zoo, pony rides, bounce houses, face painters and other entertainment. “There are several different causes that we like to participate in, contribute to, and open-up our home and bring people together for. And to do that for nearly 20 years, it’s become a part of who we are,” says Andrew.
It has also allowed Andrew and Babs the opportunity to raise their children in a giving and charitable environment, helping to shape the next generation of community-minded philanthropists. Whether it’s advice to his children, or to someone just trying to figure out how to get involved with helping make the world a better place, Andrew is quick to remind everyone of the importance of time. “Being able to give up your time is probably the most important thing, and it is so easy to do. Not everyone has the financial means to give, but everyone has a few moments to give to areas that they are passionate about and that are important to them- it really does make a big difference.”

GREAT HEIGHTS Interior Designer Lauren Rautbord Shares Her Tips on Making Small Spaces Seem Larger ARTICLE TERESA K. TRAVERSE PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL BAXTER
22
North Scottsdale Lifestyle | May 2016
S
hort of moving, it’s virtually impossible to make a small space larger; unless you know all the right design tricks. Lauren Rautbord of Paul
Lauren Design Consultants shares her advice on how to transform your tiny dwelling into a grand abode that you’ll love coming home to at the end of the day. Rautbord’s design firm prides itself on making homes feel serene, uncluttered and sophisticated, but never fussy. Now, discover all the secrets to making your small spaces feel bigger.
PAINT
“Paint goes a long way,” says Rautbord. “A lot further than people think. It’s the biggest bang for your buck in changing a space to feel larger.” Her design rule? Paint the room all one color, including the ceiling. If you have crown molding, paint the crown molding and the ceiling white. If the crown molding is small, paint the crown the same color as the walls and ceiling. Never accentuate a skinny crown! A unified room color gives the appearance of one large space instead of a room that feels broken up. A lighter color makes a room feel larger, especially when the furnishings are in the same color family as the walls. FLOORING
“If you have a smaller house, the simpler you keep the flooring, the more it just flows from room to room,” says Rautbord. As much as she loves hard wood flooring, she says there are also many great, affordable alternatives for enduring floors available that you should consider. She finds that people tend to over-invest in their floors, at the expense of rugs and drapes, which add so much texture and elegance.

GREAT HEIGHTS
(CON TI N U ED)
RUGS
“Rugs are a very important design element,”
she says. A rug anchors the furniture setting and defines the space. The rule: at least two furniture legs have to be on the rug, but Rautbord prefers all legs to be on the rug with at least 3’6” to spare. If you fall in love with a rug that’s too small for the furniture setting, layer over a larger sisal. Layering rugs, especially hides, is key to style and can help a space feel larger. DRAPERY DRAPERY
“Drapery adds luxury and warmth to the space,
and I love fine fabrics like cashmere, linen and silk,” she says. Don’t be afraid to hang drapery rods much higher than the window, making the space feel taller. If the drapes are in front of a window that faces the sun, you need to ensure that the drapes have a lining. FURNITURE FURNITURE
When it comes to furniture, Rautbord recom-
mends that you mix and match pieces. Each and every piece doesn’t need to be expensive, and “matched-sets” should be avoided at all costs! She says you can have a great room that features an inexpensive cocktail table, one splurge-worthy piece and a splash of color with a pillow or piece of artwork. CLEAR THETHE CLUTTER CLEAR CLUTTER
“Get rid of the stuff,” she says. “Clutter makes a room ‘noisy.’” Her advice on deciding what stays and what goes? Keep only what’s important. If you collect items, put all of the items together as a collection—not all over. DON’T BEBE AFRAID OF SPACE DON’T AFRAID OF SPACE
Each and every inch of your home doesn’t have to be filled with furniture. Let the space breathe, and don’t fear open space. She also advises that you never place furniture around the perimeter of the room.
MIRRORS MIRRORS When you look at a wall, try to imagine what it would reflect if you put a mirror there. Take advantage of Arizona’s gorgeous desert landscape and buy a “leaner” mirror (one that literally leans against the wall) to reflect Phoenix’s stunning vistas. “What you reflect is the outdoors, and that’s more precious than art,” she says. 24

High Grounds A Desert-Inspired North Scottsdale Home Gets a Fresh New Look ARTICLE DANIELLE ACCOVELLI PHOTOGRAPHY SCOTT SANDLER
26
North Scottsdale Lifestyle | May 2016
N
estled in the exclusive North Scottsdale Desert Highlands community, with sweeping views of Pinnacle Peak Mountain, is a magnificent desert-inspired dwelling with a unique history. Originally designed in the 1980s by renowned architecture firm, Swaback Partners, and led by Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice and founding member of both Swaback Partners and Studio V, Vern Swaback, this distinctly contemporary, completely custom home proved to be a true Southwest splendor of its time. However, when its Canadian-based owners returned from an 11-year stay in Doha, Qatar, they decided that it was time to give their home a much needed makeover. That’s when they enlisted the help of Studio V to update the interiors, while also elevating the design with a Middle Eastern- inspired aesthetic and underlying contemporary vibe. Helming the remodel was Vern Swaback’s daughter, Caroline Swaback Schlack, who, along with fellow designer, Etta Cowdrey, envisioned an interior that would embrace the existing organic architecture, but bring in a fresh palette of colors to give it a clean, contemporary, modern look.
“For us, and our clients, desert contemporary style is really all about playing off of the home’s natural materials, such as its flagstone foundation. So we tried to use a lot of neutral, earthy colors to reflect the desert and complement the existing palettes,” says Caroline. Another key component of the remodel was giving the home an eclectic, Middle Eastern feel by incorporating pieces that the owners had collected while in Qatar, like original artwork and silk rugs. “The homeowners had collected these beautiful, colorful rugs, so we had to be careful in our color selection to make sure that we were really embracing them,” says Caroline. “In the end, they turned out to be a real jewel, adding that pop of color to the rooms.” Caroline and the Studio V team put that same care and consideration into every aspect of the home’s design. “We came into this project with a fresh mind for the clients’ specific needs and really did our homework in terms of understanding what the owners wanted,” says Caroline. And the result certainly did not disappoint. CONTINUED >

Enter the home through a thick wooden door and find yourself in the midst of the breathtaking great room. Here, the design team played up the curved nature of the home, adorning it with an expansive curved sofa and a soft-edged recessed wall that embraces both the fireplace and entertainment center. Venture through the home’s kitchen and into the dining room, which boasts a long travertine table—the owners’ original piece—and a truly spectacular chandelier. “I think one of the more special elements of this room is the chandelier, which really brings in that Middle-Eastern, Moroccan vibe and creates an intimate atmosphere at night,” says Caroline. From the dining room, head out to the backyard, where a warm fireplace and curved stucco couch with comfortable cushions and an eclectic array of vibrant pillows beckons. “One of our favorite things while researching concepts for the home were those pops of color, because when you think of modern Moroccan, you think of colorful poufs and a unique layering of textiles,” says Caroline. 28

As part of the remodel, Studio V also added an art studio and pavilion perfect for embracing the indoor-outdoor lifestyle. “It’s a space that you can keep the doors open and enjoy the weather,” says Caroline. “The owners use it right now as an office, but there’s also a sleeper
sofa and a full bathroom so it would work perfectly for guests too.” In the end, the remodel afforded a spectacular, freshly-conceived desert contemporary vision of the home that truly embraced the owners’ personal lifestyle while still maintaining true to the structure’s original glory. A real

hat’s Eddie Merlot’s, a new steak and seafood restaurant that opened earlier this year on the corner of Scottsdale Road and Pinnacle Peak. This well-known establishment takes fine dining to another level with its unprecedented cuisine, superb service and wonderful ambiance. “Eddie Merlot’s is a place where hospitality and the comfort of our guests are our highest mission. We pledge to provide the finest personal service, highest quality of foods and freshest ingredients in world-class facilities for all of our guests to enjoy a memorable experience,” states owner Bill Humphries. Humphries is no stranger to the restaurant industry either. His pendulum has swung from overseeing 750 Subway locations to adding his 12th location to the Eddie Merlot’s family, the first opened in 2001 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. A CUT ABOVE
Eddie Merlot’s serves USDA prime beef—only two-percent of all U.S. beef is awarded this superior certification. It is aged naturally for a minimum of 21 days, and each piece is checked for the optimum proportion of marbling and texture before it is hand-cut and seasoned, then flash seared to seal in the flavors, producing a tender steak that is unparalleled. It is also the only restaurant in 32

the world that serves Greg Norman’s Wagyu 20 oz. Bone-in New York Strip, from Australia, with a bone and high marble score that enhances the flavor. Chef Eddie Weiss joined the Merlot’s family over a year ago after spending 17 years with Ruth’s Chris as Corporate Regional Chef. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of Art in Hyde Park, New York, he came to open the new Scottsdale location and develop the menu. “We offer a grassroots approach to our menu, as all of our stocks, soups, dressings, sauces, desserts and breads are 100-percent made from scratch. It’s this detail that contributes to the Eddie Merlot’s reputation of outstanding cuisine,” shares Chef Weiss. GREAT MENU SELECTIONS
Besides offering world-class steaks, you’ll also find a wonderful selection of other items to choose from, including seafood cooked to perfection. Menu items include bison mignon and ribeye, beef stroganoff, pork chops, vegetable gnocchi and a New Orleans mixed-grill with a filet, grilled shrimp, Andouille sausage and roasted garlic mashed potatoes. My evening started with a flavorful beet salad with diced cucumbers, celery, avocado and goat cheese drizzled with a lemon basil dressing. Next, I enjoyed the best French onion soup I’ve ever
tasted—it’s made with five different types of onions. I also sampled the creamy, sherry-laced lobster bisque, which was equally delicious. For my entrée, I savored every bite of the Sea Bass, a generous portion that was fresh and tender with an incredible infusion of maple vinaigrette and balsamic glaze, served over julienne vegetables. My dinner companion shared a bit of his fabulous steak with me, and I could clearly see how its unique marbleizing contributed to it being juicy, tender and flavorful. We also shared sides of lobster potatoes, asparagus and Brussels sprouts. Barely having room for dessert, we sampled the scrumptious, oversized carrot cake and devoured the bananas foster, which was prepared table side by our lovely server, Heather. The atmosphere was meticulously designed with fabulous mosaic art scattered throughout, a huge bar that seats 20, wraparound patio seating, a private meeting room and separate red and white wine rooms. Eddie Merlot’s has clearly raised the bar for fine dining, and wow is the only way to describe this memorable experience. DETAILS:

FROM GARDEN TO TABLE: Edible Flowers and Anti-Aging Herbs ARTICLE SUZETTE ZARA | PHOTOGRAPHY JOY REYNOLDS
A
bouquet of flowers can brighten any room, but did you realize that they can also sweeten your recipes while promoting lon-
gevity? Indeed, there are several varieties of edible flowers that can easily be grown in a home garden, or even indoors. Plus, many of these pretty petals come from plants with a long history of anti-aging properties. A perfect way to brighten Mother’s Day is with these anti-aging, sweet treats. Long live Mom! CHRYSANTHEMUMS – Dating back over 3000 years, chrysan-
themum flowers are widely used in Chinese cooking and in tea. Chrysanthemums (or “mums”) come in a wide variety of colors. Flavor varies by color. Red blossoms typically have a slightly tangy boldness which contrasts nicely with sweet frosting. MARIGOLDS – All marigolds are edible, but three varieties are
favored from the flavor perspective: Tagetes Lucida, Tagetes Patula and Tagetes Tenuifolia. They have a mild citrus flavor, which pairs nicely with a lemon cupcake. Marigolds can also be used to color dishes yellow; they are often termed “the poor man’s saffron.” ROSES – The beauty of the rose can make any dish elegant. All pure
roses (genus Rosa) are edible, but flavor depends on the color of the rose, from tart to sweet. Darker colors tend to be more tart. BASIL – Basil flowers can be white, light lavender or pale pink,
depending on the type of basil. The flower’s flavor is similar to a milder version of dried cooking basil. Not only are the flowers pretty and tasty, but basil has strong anti-aging benefits. Basil is loaded with antioxidants, which can protect your cells from the damaging molecules that contribute to heart disease and osteoporosis. 34

CANDIED CHRYSANTHEMUMS & WILDFLOWERS Candied Chrysanthemums and Wildflowers 35-45 edible flower blossoms or petals of your choice, such as edible mums, roses and marigolds 2 teaspoons meringue powder 2 tablespoons water 1½ cups superfine sugar In a small bowl, dissolve meringue powder in water. Using a small brush, lightly coat all sides of flower petals. Dust with sugar. Place flowers on a baking sheet lined with wax paper; dry for 1-2 days. Store in an airtight container, or freeze for later use. NOTE: Use only flowers you are certain to be edible, free of any pesti-
cides. Be cautious of flowers from nurseries and garden centers, as many of these have pesticides. Pick flowers in the morning, when water content is highest. Gently wash and dry all flowers thoroughly before using. Parting Thoughts
A Portrait of Mom
WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY KARIANNE MUNSTEDT
M
oms, look around your home, at the pictures on your walls. How many of those pictures are of just you? Maybe there are pictures on your walls with you in them, but how long ago were those taken? Look at the photos on your phone. I’ll bet that you are typically the one behind the camera; that you have dozens of pictures of your husband, children, grandchildren, friends and pets, but very few with you in them. Somewhere along the line we decided to stay behind the camera. Why? Maybe we don’t like our nose or our smile, and we think these “imperfections” are not worthy of being in photographs. But know this: you are amazingly beautiful right now, right at this very moment in your life. You are perfect. You are worthy. You are uniquely you and are an important part of this world. Celebrate that! Your family, children and grandchildren don’t care about those “imperfections.” They love you for everything you are—for the person you are in your soul. I recently photographed a mom and her daughter. I didn’t know this beforehand, but during the session, the mother told me that she didn’t have any pictures of her and her daughter. A couple of weeks later, when she received her beautiful mother/daughter portraits, she cried. She posted this to social media: “Today is the day I have a photo with my daughter, instead of being behind the camera. I have always shied away from photos. Always. I have come to realize that I am missing from her tangible life memories, completely. All birthdays, all Christmases, all important events, just because I don't like to

have photographs taken. Today I begin the transition to being in the memories, too.” Now that is a truly beautiful story. Us moms wear a lot of hats, and sometimes it’s hard to take time for ourselves. We feel guilty for taking time away from our families, or for spending money on ourselves rather than our children. We often forget that when we invest in ourselves, we are doing something for our children too. By existing in photos, we are creating beautiful treasures that will be passed down from generation to generation. One day, photos of you will be amongst your child’s most prized possessions. We oftentimes forget, with all the hats that we wear, that we are also beautiful, vibrant women who want to celebrate our femininity and reconnect with our womanhood. Every mother wants a few hours to herself, to be pampered, have her hair and makeup done, get dressed up in fancy clothes and be treated like a model—to look at the walls of her home and see them adorned with beautiful portraits that she is proud of. That she exists in. Karianne Munstedt is a contemporary portrait photographer specializing in portraits for women and those they love. She would be honored to help you exist in photos with your own portrait session. View her portfolio at KLMPhoto.net.
