Celebrating Men! T

he month of June is always synonymous with the beginning of summer. The days grow longer, temperatures begin to rise (for those of us in Arizona that means 100-plus degree days), the kids are home from school and a general sense of freedom and carefree fun seems to float through the air; making it an ideal time of year to take a trip or spend time with family. With Father’s Day falling in June too, it’s also the perfect time to reflect on all the influential men in our communities and lives—from star athletes and artists; to policemen and firemen; to teachers and coaches; to philanthropists and public figures; and of course, dads.

A key figure in my life is my father—a man who has been there for me through both the good times and bad times. From teaching me how to throw a baseball and ride a bike as a child, to enduring the countless door slams of my teenage years, to helping me pack up for college and then move into my first apartment, my father has always been there to lend a helping hand and a loving heart. I’ll always remember being six or seven years old, sitting on a bench in the middle of a park, a bright red Italian ice dripping on my hand, next to my father just watching all the cars pass by, talking while counting the number of out-of-state license plates that blurred by. Although I’ve moved away from home and those simple summer days spent in the park are now just fond memories, I will never forget what my father taught me—how to appreciate the smaller things in life and all the people that make it so special. In this issue we celebrate all things manly, from cool camping spots in the rugged wilderness to custom hot-rods from Barrett-Jackson and easy recipes for men to make.

F

or four-plus decades, the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company has been synonymous with classic and collector cars. Every year, the company holds its popular auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale—an event that attracts hundreds of thousands of car enthusiasts and boasts total sales of over $100 million. While the yearly event, which is one of the biggest car auctions in the world, is very well-known among local residents, not as many people are familiar with the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company’s other offering here in the Valley: The Barrett-Jackson Collection Showroom. As Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson notes, the Showroom was created to offer a year-round option for selling and buying collector cars. “Additionally, we created the service department to provide ethical and quality maintenance along with highly-skilled mechanics that can properly repair and maintain these vehicles,” he says. Since the Showroom first opened in November, 2014, Jackson says it has already become an ideal venue to sell, consign or purchase quality collector cars throughout the year, with a rotating selection of immediately available premium vehicles always on hand. From everyday owners who wish to consign a quality collectible car to a billionaire or celebrity who has a large collection of cars to sell, both the vehicles and the clientele are all treated with the same high standard of customer service and care. Prior to accepting any vehicle for consignment, or making an offer, Jackson says it is carefully inspected to ensure that the fit, finish and mechanics meet the high standards for which BarrettJackson is known. “Our consignment process is simple – contact a sales associate at the Showroom and provide details about the vehicle,” Jackson says. “We review and ensure that it is a good fit for all parties. There is

an upfront fee of $500, and the contract term is 90 days. After the vehicle sells, we take a 10 percent commission.” The dealership focuses primarily on classic, custom, resto-mod and special interest vehicle sales and service, Jackson says. “Not only do we accept high-quality vehicles on consignment, but we also purchase vehicles outright,” he says, adding that the service department is overseen by an ASE-Certified mechanic and is wellversed in all aspects of light reconditioning, repairs and service on almost everything – even late-model supercars. “As far as purchasing a collector piece, due to our vast marketing reach and reputation for quality, we also sell vehicles to people from around the globe, including clients in Moscow, Australia and Mexico City, to name a few,” Jackson says. In addition to collectible vehicles, Jackson says the BarrettJackson Collection Showroom also features a merchandise department that’s a one-stop-shop for a variety of BarrettJackson items that make for great gifts for oneself or another person. Shoppers can find t-shirts, branded hats, unique garage signs and more. “We are even an official dealer of Piloti driving shoes,” Jackson says. While the Barrett-Jackson Collection Showroom is a relatively small facility, Jackson says that all the cars in their inventory are rare, and each has an interesting back story. The Showroom is located in Old Town Scottsdale, at 3020 N. Scottsdale Road, and is open to the public six days a week, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and also by appointment. Tours are also given. “We invite those who wish to have a tour of the back of the facility to call and book an appointment at 480.306.8210,” Jackson says. CAMPING ARTICLE TERESA K. TRAVERSE | PHOTOGRAPHY KIM HANNA

A

rizona is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the country, and if you're searching for a way to connect with nature,

you might want to consider camping. Waking up in the wild can be a rejuvenating experience. You can make it a men-only weekend for a short getaway or bring the whole family if looking for a fun way to bond.Â

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK If you're searching for a camping trip that will take you to Arizona's most iconic site, consider heading to the Grand Canyon North Rim Campground. Kim Hanna, the Arizona blogger behind camping recipe site Camping for Foodies, says the North Rim is ideal, since it's about 1,000 feet higher than the South Rim and much cooler. She describes it as remote and less likely to draw large crowds. "The campground is filled with tall trees, awesome views and a lot of “breathing room,” which is really nice since you are not too close to the campsite next door. I love that less people means more wildlife in viewing distance from the campsites and hiking trails. From the campground, there is an easy hiking trail that takes you to the area with lodging, restaurants, gift shops and lookout points," Hanna writes in an email. Besides checking out the Grand Canyon, you also can visit Navajo Bridge, Navajo Nation Indian Reservation, Colorado River's Marble Canyon and the Historic Cameron Trading Post, which specializes in Native American Crafts. Lodging and restaurants open in mid-May and close mid-October.

MOGOLLON RIM Located in Northern Arizona, to the southeast of Flagstaff, you can take in sweeping views of the Mogollon Rim, accessed by Forest Road 300, which features sweeping views of the sky, trees and the seemingly endless and diverse Arizona scenery.

"You can pull up to the edge of the Mogollon Rim, and there will be this incredible landscape stretching around you, and no one around most of the time,” says Annemarie Medrzycki, digital marketing manager at Arizona Outback Adventures. The area offers hiking and horseback trails, lakes for boating and fishing, and creeks where you can swim.

GROOM CREEK IN PRESCOTT If you're looking to get away from it all, but still be close enough to Prescott to grab a meal at a restaurant in town, Medrzycki says Groom Creek is the perfect place to be. There are many boulders for rock climbing in the area, and you can enjoy horseback riding trails throughout, too. Hikers and mountain bikers can head to Spruce Mountain, which is near Groom Creek, to soak up all of Prescott’s renowned woodland scenery on this nine-mile loop trail.

18|8 SALON IS THE PERFECT WAY TO SPOIL DAD FOR ANY OCCASION ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

D

ad may not always be one to say it out loud, but sometimes he just wants to be pampered a bit. Fortunately for him, and for men all across North Scottsdale, 18|8 Fine Men’s Salon has opened its doors and is ready to redefine the old barbershop experience. The company’s name stems from a discovery made in the early 1900s, which found that adding 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel to steel eliminated the tendency for it to oxidize and rust. Not only did the resulting steel look better, it also performed better. From that, the idea of “what was ordinary, became extraordinary” was adopted as 18|8 Salons’ core mission as they first started opening shops in California over a decade ago, seeking to help men transform themselves to look, feel and perform their best. “I was looking for something that would allow me to get closer to my customers, and really deliver something unique to them,” explains David Doederlein, who was introduced to 18|8 early last year after a long corporate career with PetSmart and Best Buy. Once he decided it was time to be his own boss, Doederlein sought the advice of a franchise coach to help him find the right fit. “I really only had two criteria. First, I wanted to do something that was not being done and that was really new and unique, and secondly, I wanted to be first to the market. Through that, I found 18|8 and knew I wanted to help bring this concept to Arizona customers.” After the whirlwind of finding a location and transforming it

34

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | June 2016

into a one-of-a-kind luxury salon for men, 18|8 officially opened in January of this year. Now, not only do men have a place where they can get a haircut, shave and coloring treatment like they used to get at a barber, but can also receive an array of other services, including waxing, manicures, pedicures and facials. An impressive selection of services means nothing, however, unless the staff is able to execute it all at a high-level, while at the same time fostering a genuine and relaxing atmosphere for the client. At 18|8, the staff is hand-picked to ensure that they can put the needs of the customer first. Each staff member has experience ranging anywhere from 5-24 years, yet all are retrained using a method adopted by 18|8 to help ensure every customer leaves feeling confident, knowing that they will get an amazing haircut each and every time. The staff also has an extended knowledge of the specialty retail products 18|8 offers to keep men looking their best in between visits, including brands such as American Crew, Griff’s and Reuzel. “I would say a typical man who would be interested in 18|8 is a man who is interested in looking his best, feeling his best and performing his best, and also one that enjoys getting pampered and feeling great after taking the time out of his day to receive a truly unique and customized experience,” says Doederlein. “We don’t do a 10-minute cut. The people who come in here are the people who appreciate the fact that we take the time to make sure that they leave looking and feeling their best.”

Parting Thoughts

Outgrowing Daddy WORDS KORY KILMER

E

ver since my son began to speak, the majority of his sentences have been punctuated by the same word. “I had a great day at school today, Daddy!” “Can we have tacos for dinner tonight, Daddy?” “I love you too, Daddy.” These last few years, however, especially as we approached the end of his elementary school days this spring, the word doesn’t seem to get thrown around with the same fervor as it did when he was smaller. It makes sense, I get it. I was there, too, once. It just gets to the point where saying it isn’t cool. That certainly doesn’t mean I have to like it. There is a pretty easy metaphor of growing-up as the constant opening and closing of different chapters that, when binded together, comprise the multi-layered novel that is childhood. Many of those chapters have already played out with my son, of course. He learned to walk and talk almost a decade ago, and my head is full of other monumental occasions such as his first day of kindergarten, finally taking the training wheels off his bike, and more recently, the arrival of double-digit birthdays. Looking back though, it has been those little moments that I seem to treasure the most—letting him win at a game of Go Fish or Chutes and Ladders, pretending I loved the movie Cars as much

during the 100th time we watched it together as I did our first, or not quite staying in between the lines while coloring at the kitchen table. Yet all those memories seem to have been accompanied with that one simple word. “Thank you, Daddy!” “Do you want to play with me, Daddy?” “Goodnight, Daddy.” We have arrived at the point where the tears no longer flow over every little thing, and where a trip to the ice cream store does not fix a bad day like it used to. But when I talk to my son now, I can see his mind go places I had not yet seen it go before, and it is exciting to watch it unfold. Now when we talk he can articulate hopes and fears, work through concepts and ideas, and begin to lay out a simplified trajectory for his developing dreams that when listening to, make me realize that he still thinks he is capable of anything. But in all of that dialogue, “Daddy” seems to be slowly fading away, replaced with this new character that’s taking a bit of getting used to. I will be the first to admit to being far from perfect, and this whole parenting thing has been a case study in learning on the fly. Yet every time I look at my son, I cannot help but feel proud to see the man he is becoming, in spite of my many mistakes and overreactions along the way. Here’s to the future, because I can only image that hearing, “I love you too, Dad,” is not all that bad, either.
