Celebrate Pets in Service
I
t was a clear, crisp January afternoon. The sun peeked out from a few scattered fluffy white clouds in the blue sky, the windows were rolled down on our new Subaru Forester and the soft breeze blew wisps of hair across my face. To most, it would seem like the perfect day, however, for me, it seemed a little less bright. I sat in the backseat of the car holding my mom’s thin and pale hand as we made the journey from Queen Creek to Phoenix for yet another doctor’s visit. I knew that this wasn’t how any of us planned on spending our Saturday, but we made the best of it, listening to music, telling stories and enjoying time spent as a family.
On the way home, we decided to celebrate a bit of good news we had received by stopping for dinner at San Tan Flats. We turned off the main road onto a dusty gravel street, passing green fields dotted with cotton and corn. We were stopped at a light when I noticed my mom’s eyes transfixed on something in the distance: two miniature ponies grazing under a tree at a nearby farm. As we passed the horses, her eyes widened and the corners of her mouth turned up in a faint smile. Her clear blue eyes were suddenly filled with calm and began to water as one of the ponies turned toward us, pricking his ears up and transfixing his gaze on her. Soon, we made stopping by the farm after her doctors visits a regular habit, and although she couldn’t get out of the car to see them, I was always amazed at the calming, comforting effect they had on her, almost as if they could sense she was sick. To this day, I will never forget how intuitive those mini ponies were or how much their mere presence seemed to take such a hold over my mom. Sometimes it takes more than doctors and medicine to heal; it takes the pure, innocent heart of an animal. Whether your pet serves as a playmate, companion or service animal, they undeniably have a special hold over your family and heart. In this issue, we want to say thank you to all the pets out there making our lives brighter, like Bliss the beloved service dog to 12-year-old Claudia and the horses at Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship, as well as the people, like those at Fix.Adopt.Save, striving to make the world a better place for our pets.

FOREVER home HOMELESS PETS ACROSS MARICOPA COUNTY GET A SECOND CHANCE AT BECOMING A PART OF THE FAMILY ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ARIZONA HUMANE SOCIETY
T
he statistics earlier this decade for Maricopa County’s homeless pet population were startling for any animal lover. Rather than accepting this grim equation, seven of the state’s animal welfare agencies decided to act. Together they formed The Alliance for Companion Animals, and crafted the Fix.Adopt.Save. initiative to fight the issue head-on. “What makes it so unique is the collaboration between the seven groups,” says Bretta Nelson, public relations manager at the Arizona Humane Society. 14

“EACH ORGANIZATION INVOLVED HAS SORT OF ITS OWN EXPERTISE, SO YOU WILL HAVE A GROUP THAT IS MORE FOCUSED ON ADOPTIONS OR NEUTERS, OR POSSIBLY EVEN THE BEHAVIORAL AND MEDICAL PIECE. EVERYBODY JUST BRINGS SOMETHING TO THE TABLE, WITH THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF SAVING AS MANY OF THESE ANIMAL’S LIVES AS POSSIBLE.” “Each organization involved has sort of its own expertise, so you will have a group that is more focused on adoptions or neuters, or possibly even the behavioral and medical piece. Everybody just brings something to the table, with the ultimate goal of saving as many of these animal’s lives as possible.” With a name such as Fix.Adopt.Save. it’s no surprise that at the initiative’s core is a three-tiered approach to helping both Maricopa County’s homeless animal population, as well as other communities throughout Arizona: FIX- Focusing on at-risk animals and dramatically increasing low-cost and free spay/neuter services available to reduce shelter intake and euthanasia, including 22,000 free surgeries for cats and dogs whose owners cannot afford them. ADOPT- Increasing the number of adoptions by creating more retail adoption centers, and fostering more animals until they are healthy enough to be adopted. SAVE- Encouraging responsible pet ownership and providing resources to the community. With the unwavering support of the community, the impact of Fix. Adopt.Save. has been dramatic. In just three years, the county has seen intakes drop by over 30,000 and the number of euthanasias down by nearly the same amount. Better yet, adoptions are on the rise, with nearly 7,000 more kittens and dogs fostered and adopted than when the program started. At the core of the adoption rise are a series of events throughout the year that allow some of the animals who have had to wait a bit longer to find their forever home a platform to be out in front of the public, making a strong case to prospective families looking for a fantastic pet. These events typically prove to be just the right stage for happy endings for dogs like Kane, who is a four-year-old American Bull Terrier mix that stayed three months with the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control before finding a home at an event, as well as Gruyere, another American Pit Bull mix, who was taken in by the Arizona Animal Welfare League and had to wait over seven months to find his home. “People often question if it is a good idea to offer incentives or waiving fees at events like this,” explains Bretta. “But when talking to the community of people who come forward and attend these events, we find that they are not doing it because of the cost associated with it, but rather because of the message associated behind it. They understand that we are out there for these particular animals, and they want to help make a difference in the life of an animal as well.” The next community event hosted by Fix.Adopt.Save. will be the 3rd Annual Pittie-Palozza on Saturday, October 15, in honor of Pit Bull Awareness month, at the West Entrance of Phoenix Metrocenter Mall. PULSE OF LIFE
INTRODUCING A FITNESS CENTER THAT TRULY CARES ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
W
ith so many fitness centers in the Valley, finding the one that will help you meet your specific goals can be a real challenge. Many centers provide minimal guidance with little follow-up, so over time, your enthusiasm and commitment to work out decreases and your goals get pushed aside. Owners Tim and Erin Lyons realized this very thing for themselves when they worked out at a “big box” fitness center. Both are passionate about health and fitness, and recognized what was lacking at these centers. So they decided to create a fitness center that would personalize workouts to meet their clients’ goals and abilities, no matter the age, level of fitness or physical limitations. Their vision became a reality when they opened Pulse Fitness in August, 2009. Tim, a health enthusiast and former D-1 college and arena football player, explains, “We know that getting into a fitness program can be difficult for many people. We have created an environment of support not only from our Coaching Team, but from our members as well. Everyone is here for the same reason, to become the best version of themselves as possible. That’s what we are all about - We Train the Athlete in YOU!” GETTING FIT
Prior to designing a workout program for each client, a full body assessment is done. Since each client has a different body composition with different strengths, abilities and limitations, one training program does not fit all. Pulse Fitness uses the InBody 570 machine, which measures body composition and gives an accurate analysis of data, as a starting point. These machines are typically used in medical clinics and rarely found in fitness centers due to their cost. The assessment takes 16
North Scottsdale Lifestyle | September 2016
into account your health, limitations and statistical data, so your training can be personalized to your needs, ability and goals. After the assessment, the Fitness Coach will review it with you, along with your fitness goals, and design a personalized program adjusting for any limitations. There are two types of fitness plans offered. One is a series of small, personalized training sessions where the ratio is four clients to one coach, each working on their own program. The other is the larger Boot Camp team classes that are designed for clients wanting a more intense cardiovascular workout that focuses on fat loss and metabolic conditioning. The Fitness Coaches continue to motivate and support each client on their progress, against their individual goals, while the InBody 570 continues to monitor their level of body fat, lean muscle mass and muscular development in tracking their progress. OTHER PROGRAMS
A Golf Fitness Program is also offered to golfers who want to enhance their performance. Pulse Fitness uses the well-recognized and respected Titleist Performance Institute holistic technique and innovative technology. Tim is a certified Level 3 Expert and uses the TPI training program to assist his golf clients in achieving their golf fitness goals – whether it’s their mobility, strength or rotational power. Muscle therapy is also emphasized for clients who have tight or sore muscles, or for those wanting to prevent muscle injury. Licensed massage therapists use a combination of far infrared sauna, stretch therapy and massage to help their clients regain strong muscles. For more information, please visit PulseFitnessAZ.com.
PURE BLISS A Four-Legged Companion Opens Infinite Doors to Independence for One Young Girl
ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
welve-year-old Claudia Rank has a magnetic smile that immediately draws you in. She can be a tad shy when you first meet her, but don’t let that fool you. She’s very insightful for her age, and if you’re lucky enough to get her on a trail ride, she might tell you some of the secrets of the universe. She’s certainly a young lady who knows what she wants. While speaking with Claudia, she remembers watching a PBS special when she was five-years-old called “Through a Dog’s Eyes,” featuring a service dog program called Canine Assistants. Shortly after the special aired, Claudia’s parents submitted an application to the service dog program on her behalf. After six years on the waiting list, Claudia and her mom, Beth, finally made the two-week journey from North Scottsdale to Canine Assistants, which is located near Atlanta, Georgia. There, they met Bliss, the dog that would help Claudia reach new heights of independence. Nearly a year later, the two of them have become an inseparable team. In her own words, Claudia shares what life is like with Bliss. M: Tell me about your disability. C: I was born with cerebral palsy, a condition that has no cure. I have trouble walking and my hands don’t work well. It takes a long time for me to write with a pencil and paper, so I use a computer to type. Despite all my difficulties physically, I am very smart. Never judge a book by its beginning, or it’s cover. 18
North Scottsdale Lifestyle | September 2016
M: How does Bliss help you?
C: Bliss helps me with physical tasks such as opening doors and drawers, picking up various items I drop, and helps reduce my stress at medical appointments. My favorite task she does is getting my cell phone out of my backpack and bringing it to me. M: Tell me about how you and Bliss trained. C: Bliss started training at two days old! As a puppy, she went through exposure training and obstacle courses. She had to practice many unusual, and sometimes scary, situations to prepare her for any kind of work. During this time, she also learned basic commands. She left the farm with a foster mom to gain experience in public. Canine Assistants uses Bonded-Based Choice Teaching for preparing the dog for service. When Bliss was almost two she was ready to be matched. I went to Canine Assistants to match and bond with a dog. I also learned to work with Bliss. It was a great experience. Bliss was the first service dog I met there. She was super happy to see me and jumped up on my lap. When she came up on the couch, she pawed at my legs wanting me to play with her. M: Are you and your dog still in training? C: Bliss and I train together at home almost every day. We polish tasks and work on new ones. M: When will you be done with training? C: Never. We will always be going over tasks to make sure Bliss still knows and can perform them. She will keep on learning new ones too.
M: Do you let people pet her when she is working?
C: If it’s a new place that Bliss is unsure about, I don’t allow people to pet her so she can concentrate on behaving. If she’s okay with the place and is behaving, then I let people pet her. M: Do you bring Bliss to school? C: Yes. At school, Bliss lays down next to my desk and stays there unless I drop something. Bliss goes almost everywhere with me, even on vacation. I even took her to Colorado to go to an adaptive skiing class. M: Do you take care of Bliss yourself? C: I do some of the care for Bliss, such as feeding her, taking her out and going on walks, but other tasks, such as giving her baths, Mom does. M: What kind of relationship do your siblings have with Bliss? C: My siblings love the dog! Bliss knows she can have fun with the other kids, but really she is my dog. Eloise [Claudia’s twin sister] loves to teach Bliss new tasks, which I appreciate. We all love to cuddle with her and get a little love. M: Do you have any special stories to share? C: She follows me everywhere I go and is sad when I have to leave. She listens to me even when I don’t have any treats. She snuggles with me in bed, on the couch and in the car. I like playing hide-and-seek with her. One night she was sleeping in bed with me and I had a nightmare, woke up and Bliss rested her head on my tummy so I could pet her. A girl and her dog is a beautiful thing, but a girl and her service CONTINUED > companion is pure bliss. September 2016 | North Scottsdale Lifestyle

HEALING HORSES Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship Brings Hope, Strength and Independence To Riders ARTICLE TERESA K. TRAVERSE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

orseback riders are typically viewed as being strong, independent and fierce. Those same attributes are what the staff at Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship, an organization that strives to improve the quality of life for students who have disabilities through horsemanship and outdoor activities, hopes to instill in its riders. “I’m able to have command over a 1,100-pound animal … it’s really empowering, whether you have a disability or not, to have control over such a big animal,” says Alicia Draper, a volunteer who started at Camelot at 12, left at 18, returned at 28 and has been there ever since. She’s 34 now. Draper is just one example of the many students who have completed Camelot’s program. Students range in age from seven to seventy, and after being accepted into the program, they are allowed a spot for a minimum of two years. They typically visit once a week for a 90-minute session during Camelot’s season, which ranges from October through the end of May.
This beautifully-appointed riding facility is located on 14.25 private acres in the Pinnacle Peak area of Scottsdale, deep in the desert. The administrative building, education center and barn are completely accessible. All of the equipment is at wheel-chair height, there are also grooves raked into the concrete floor that change direction so visually impaired students can differentiate between the tack or horse equipment area and the stables where the horses live, and labels above the equipment are all in braille. The horses themselves are even tailored to the students. Camelot has eight horses, with some of them having narrower bodies to help wheelchair users who may have trouble getting their legs across. Volunteers accompany students on horses, and most of them ride in the covered arena that features a ramp beside it, which students can use to mount their horse. They are also able to ride on Camelot’s private trails or in the outdoor arena. “They’re responsible for as much as possible: bringing the horse in, grooming the horse and tacking up,” says Hannah Brisso, Camelot’s CONTINUED >

principle riding instructor. “We help as much as is needed, but not more so.” Although students learn plenty about horses, the animals are only one element found in Camelot’s comprehensive curriculum that’s designed to teach students independence above all else. It’s a lesson that Camelot founder Eileen Szychowski, who was the first disabled Park Ranger on duty at the Grand Canyon, taught Draper when she was a child. She showed Draper how people with disabilities can lead fulfilling lives. “She [Szychowski] was such a strong woman with a disability,” says Draper. “Even though her physical body might have been weak, she had command over her life and what she wanted to do. I wanted to do the same thing when I got older.” Draper now serves as a mentor and instructor to other students at Camelot. “I’ve learned that it’s okay to have a disability,” says Draper. “As a kid, I was really self-conscience about how I looked different … I think the whole process at Camelot freed me from what I used to think about myself.” When executive director of Camelot, Mary Hadsall, watches students like Draper thrive, she knows that Camelot is working its magic. “Other students can look up to her and see all that is possible. It really just comes from within. Whatever you want to do, whether you have a disability or not, what holds you back is yourself. So the power of belief is amazing,” says Hadsall. “It’s not just our students that really go through this process of self awareness and this growth, it happens to every single volunteer that’s here too. The disability disappears. After a while, it’s not Alicia [Draper], an adult rider who has cerebral palsy. It’s just Alicia.” For

Road Trip
A BREATHTAKING SAN DIEGO HOME IS THE QUINTESSENCE OF ELEGANT BEACH LIVING
ARTICLE MORIAH SCHOWENGERDT PHOTOGRAPHY RANCHO PHOTOS
T
here is nothing like the salty, breezy air blowing in from the California coastline. San Diego, California, more specifically La Jolla, is a place where perfect temperatures and sunshine are almost always in your daily forecast and world-class beaches await in your backyard. There is no better way to experience this part of the country than to stay in a luxurious estate, and “Manoir de Rose,” as it’s called, is truly a dream. This 3,122-square-foot French country manor has every amenity you can possibly imagine, and is guaranteed to leave you wanting to extend your vacation. When pulling up, one is first struck by the impressive iron gate, which gives the place a luxurious, private feel. Upon walking through the front door, a brilliant crystal chandelier and a sweeping staircase make quite an impression. The first thing to greet you inside is Rose, a statue that sits by the staircase, where you can read about her history and remark on her beauty. Walking into the formal living room and dining area will make you feel as though you’ve been transported through history and are now part of a wealthy French family. Off of the kitchen, where all the appliances you could possibly need are provided, is a cozy, more casual family room sporting comfortable leather couches and a large flat screen television. Completing the downstairs is a spacious guest bedroom with a queen-sized bed and adjoining bathroom with shower. Upstairs are two grand master suites, both with king size beds, TVs, large walk-in closets and incredible ocean views, along with ensuite bathrooms that include double sinks and walk-in showers 28
North Scottsdale Lifestyle | September 2016
(there’s even a large bathtub in one them). The third bedroom upstairs has a queen bed, television and shares the master bathroom. Outside, through the sliding doors of one of the master suites, is a rooftop deck with views to kill. The panoramic of the glistening ocean and shoreline will have you feeling as if you’re looking out onto the Mediterranean coast. The spacious deck has lounge chairs and a table for enjoying alfresco sunset dinners. Down the stairs, in the spacious backyard, you’ll find a gated pool with a slide, a hot tub and a relaxing sunroom complete with a Ping-Pong table. It’s the perfect yard for both kids and adults to play and have fun in. If all of this isn’t enough, the large two-car garage is equipped with a washer and dryer, beach toys and chairs, a cooler and more. You will not be in need of a single thing while enjoying this incredible property. La Jolla Shores Park is just down the hill, about a thirty-second drive, and offers white sand beaches with bathrooms and plenty of parking. It’s close, convenient, and above all, absolutely breathtaking. The beach is large and the water is nice for small kids to play in at the edge of. Some of San Diego’s other world-class attractions, including Sea World, The San Diego Zoo and Lego Land, are also just a short drive away. Anyone looking to make memories with family and friends that will last a lifetime will find it well worth their while to stay at “Manoir de Rose.” To make reservations at “Manoir de Rose,” please contact Nancy’s Vacation Rentals by calling 619.940.4687 or visiting NancysVacationRentals.com. S
eptember is Pain Awareness Month– a great reminder to resolve those nagging aches and pains or lingering injuries that have interfered with the ability to enjoy an active, pain-free life. The team of highly-seasoned specialists at Barrow Brain and Spine’s Rehabilitation Institute of Scottsdale and NeuroSpine and Rehabilitation Center of Phoenix are helping patients achieve remarkable results. In fact, with these experts by their side, patients who have tried countless ways to find relief are finally getting the care they need and the results they desire. Led by Dr. Raj Singh, Barrow’s highly-skilled rehab team includes physicians specializing in physical medicine and pain medicine, as well as physical therapists, dietitians and exercise physiologists, all of whom work collaboratively with each patient to create a personalized treatment plan that addresses the individual’s immediate health issues while also emphasizing long-term vitality with training on proper nutrition and fitness. “The patients we see range from those who are recovering from a golf injury, to those healing from a spine surgery, to those who simply want to have more energy and enjoy life more by losing weight and eating better,” says Dr. Raj Singh. “Whatever an individual’s condition or goals may be, we create a step-by-step plan to help them get their health on track.”
patient. Taking the time to listen and to communicate makes all the difference in providing exceptional medical care,” says Dr. Goel.
CUTTING-EDGE PAIN MANAGEMENT
The Barrow team utilizes a proven three-step approach when counseling patients. Patients begin by undergoing a comprehensive health assessment by Dr. Singh and his team in order to create a personalized plan of action and timeline to achieve their goals. Patients then meet with Barrow experts monthly to receive guidance and to stay on track. Finally, upon achieving their wellness “benchmarks,” patients receive ongoing coaching, typically every three to six months. “Results can often be surprising and enriching in ways patients hadn’t imagined at the start. With our guidance, patients are not only taking steps to recover, but also to prevent injury and disease. They are enjoying life more than ever,” says Dr. Singh.
For those suffering from chronic or acute pain, Barrow’s rehab centers offer life changing non-surgical options for patients with sports injuries and severe, chronic back and neck pain. This multi-faceted approach toward treating a patient may include a combination of physical therapy, injection therapy and medication management. Barrow’s in-house pain intervention specialist, Dr. Parul Goel, uses cutting edge, image-guided injection therapies—including stem cells—to provide a specific, directed intervention in the treatment of a variety of pain conditions. "I strongly believe that the key to achieving optimal pain relief and improving quality of life is developing a relationship with each 32

Dr. Goel specializes in interventional pain management, stem cell injections for degenerative disc disease and for degenerative joint disease
ADVANCED PHYSICAL THERAPY Dr. Gregory L. Umphrey, who specializes in rehabilitation of spine and musculoskeletal problems, including sports injuries, peripheral nerve conditions and interventional directed pain treatments, has a unique perspective on treating Barrow’s rehab patients. “I was an elite gymnast for many years and I know what it does to your quality of life when you’re on the bench, so to speak. That’s why my passion is identifying the right solution for a patient’s specific issues so we can get them back in the game as quickly as possible,” says Dr. Umphrey. “Personalized physical therapy is so important because it helps to improve spine mechanics and decrease irritation on various structures in the neck and spine by improving mobility, core strength and muscle balance in the regions surrounding the injury or trouble area.”

Parting Thoughts
FOR THE LOVE OF PETEY WORDS ALISON STANTON
I
will always remember the day we met our rescue dog Petey. It was mid-March 2007, and my family and I were on the way to a reunion for dogs who had been adopted from the Arizona Border Collie Rescue. During the drive, my husband half-jokingly asked me how many dogs we would come home with that day. “One! One dog! We are only coming home with Zoey!” I replied vehemently. I knew we eventually wanted to adopt a second rescue dog, but I didn’t think we were quite ready for a new family member yet. Of course, that firm commitment went right out the proverbial window the instant we got to the dog park. As Zoey, our border collie mix, immediately ran off to romp and play with the other rescue dogs, my eyes landed on a shy and somewhat sad looking border collie wearing a purple bandana that said “Adopt Me.” “Ohhhhh…who is this?” I said as I leaned down to pet him. “This is Petey,” replied his kind-hearted foster mom. She went on to explain that he had recently been turned into Arizona Border Collie Rescue by his former owners, who had used him as a breeding dog for the first two years of his life. For the next couple of hours, as Zoey played and had a wonderful time, Petey stayed right by our side. We marveled at how good he was with our own boys, as well as the other kids who came over to pet him. When it was time to go, Petey followed us to the gate. My husband and I looked at each other and knew then and there that we had found our next family member. Or maybe—he had found us.

Petey came to live with us several days later. While we were delighted to adopt him, and already loved him dearly, we soon found out that being kept as a breeding dog had taken its toll on his emotional health. Petey was easily the sweetest dog we had ever met. He was amazing with my boys and I, but scared to death of my 6’ 4” kind-hearted, gentle husband. In fact, every guy he met caused him to tremble with fear. So did cameras, thunderstorms and brown glass bottles of root beer. Petey also had a severe case of separation anxiety. Once, when we left him in a large and comfy crate when we went out to run errands, he managed to crack the plastic pan at the bottom and tear up the carpet underneath. Despite these initial bumps in the rescue dog road, we loved Petey so much that we wanted to do everything we could to help him, and over the next few months, he began to blossom. He learned that when we left, we came back. He realized that big, tall men can be kind and not scary—and I am proud to say that our carpet and couch are still intact. Petey is now almost 12, and the black fur on his muzzle has developed a distinguished salt and pepper look. He moves around a bit slower these days, as his hips have become arthritic, but the loving, sweet dog who gazes up at us daily as if to say “thank you for adopting me” is still there, and always will be. Petey, thank YOU for showing us the true meaning of unconditional love, for teaching us patience and proving how gratifying it is to adopt a rescue dog. We are honored that you chose us to be your forever family.
