Welcome home! W
hat better month to feature the Home? November marks the beginning of the most festive time of year-full of family gatherings, holidays and lots of excuses to spruce up the old homestead. In this issue, you'll get to peek inside Urban North, the Northland's only subdivision with modern design at its heart. Luke Owen of Owen Homes sees a vision for a neighborhood where the lines are sleek and the energy efficient and he's not the only one. Amber and Toby Jennings have already moved in and love the sleek yet cozy feeling of their new custom home. For folks that prefer something with a little more history, check out our story about Main Street Goods and Goodies. The shop is part antiques, part original art and part throw-back treats like you or your mom might have enjoyed. There's something for everyone and its proprietor, Gail Dugdale, is happy to help blend styles to create a unique look for your home. If getting out of the house is more your style, Pete Dulin is taking us on a trip across the state. St. Louis is more than just Italian food and the Redbirds. He clues us in on the hip eateries, breweries and coffee shops that you won't want to miss.

Around Town NORTH KANSAS CITY HOSPITAL’S MERITAS HEALTH AND HY-VEE LAUNCH FIRST EXPRESS CARE CLINIC IN THE NORTHLAND Meritas Health, a subsidiary of North Kansas City Hospital, is announcing it will open five express care clinics in the Northland over the next two years. The first Meritas Health Express walk-in clinic will open in the Liberty Hy-Vee, located at 109 N. Blue Jay Drive, in late November. Meritas Health Express clinics will be staffed by advanced nurse practitioners with medical oversight provided by primary care physicians from Meritas Health, the largest network of providers in the Northland. Open seven days a week, the clinics will provide non-urgent care services for adults and children 18 months and older. Services include immunizations, physical exams, wellness screenings, and treatment for minor illnesses, injuries and skin conditions. “Through our electronic medical record system, Meritas Health Express is connected to North Kansas City Hospital, Meritas Health and other providers, allowing for seamless patient referrals when necessary,” says Linda Coventon, Meritas Health network executive. “We are proud to announce our first clinic with Hy-Vee, a company whose values and community spirit align with our own,” says Peggy Schmitt, president and CEO at North Kansas City Hospital. “As the Northland continues to grow and we announce additional locations, these clinics will enable us to provide additional healthcare services to the community.”

three years old, the program is already having a significant impact on both students and businesses. A good example involves the annual Business Retention Survey conducted by the Clay County Economic Development Council. On a recent Tuesday, Stidham’s nearly 40 students met at BankLiberty in Gladstone to learn techniques they would use to gather the opinions and needs of area businesses. Their work will greatly expand EDC efforts, which help with everything from proposed regulatory reform to coordinating the county’s community development efforts. “This provides us with a tremendous boost,” notes EDC Director of Business Development Chris Sizemore. “With the students’ help, we are able to contact far more businesses and get more of their input. It’s a significant expansion.” Matt Dobbler from Liberty High School plus Jacob Harris and Jacob Wilson from Staley High School are good examples. “It’s fun to see how things work,” Harris says. “We’re involved with real business issues and can apply what we learn.” Stidham says these successes are only the start, however. The three-year-old program also includes programs covering technology, engineering and advanced manufacturing, medicine and healthcare, and global logistics and transportation.
LARGE LIBERTY PROJECT NOW UNDER WAY Legacy Development has broken ground on the company's latest retail project, the $80 million redevelopment of Liberty Commons. Located at the southeast corner of I-35 and Missouri Highway 152 in Liberty, the 335,000-square-foot shopping center is scheduled to reopen in fall 2016. The rebuilt center includes several businesses that will be new to the Northland, including restaurants, Academy Sports + Outdoors and other national retailers. A 110-room Residence Inn Marriott is also planned for the center. Formerly operating as RED Legacy, the developer has a successful track record and is now focusing extensively on the Northland. "We are excited that Legacy has the same faith we do in the great market share in the Northland and that they chose Liberty as the location for their next shopping center," Mayor Lyndell Brenton says. "We are also looking forward to the many shops and restaurants that have signed on to this development." Other tenants announced so far include Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse, Spin Neapolitan Pizza, Natural Grocers, McAlister's Deli, Louie's Wine Dive, Aveda Lifestyle Salon, Maurices, Kirkland's, Five Below, Gordman's and Ulta Beauty.

A
kitchen remodel is on many people’s wish list, but sometimes replacing the whole kitchen isn’t needed or in the budget. Kellie Kemple of the Coves North neighborhood in Kansas City North was tired of her old cabinets, and wanted an different look. “Our kitchen cabinets had gotten scratched and worn, especially around the sink area. They were an oak medium tone and were in need of attention. I thought about painting them, but my hubby didn't like that idea. I thought of having them restained but really could not find anyone to do that. I then looked into refacing them, which means all new doors and drawers with the existing layout and that was the perfect solution for us. I’d never heard of cabinet refacing before, but it was just replacing the front of the cabinets in the same location," Kemple says. Once Kemple set her mind on refacing, she had to find a company to do it, which required getting bids and information from different companies. She looked online and found KC Wood out of Edwardsville, Kansas. After looking at bids, she really liked them and decided to use them to reface her cabinets. “We had already put all new appliances and backsplash, and granite countertops several years prior," explains Kemple. "I then set out to find a company that did refacing. I got three different bids. KC Wood wasn't the lowest, nor the highest, but they were very informative and I spoke to Allison initially and we hit it off." After she decided to go with KC Wood, she went to their showroom in Edwardsville, where they make everything, to pick out the wood. Kemple replaced the oak cabinets with a knotty alder wood in a dark stain, with a little bit of texture. Her goal was to make her kitchen more user-friendly while improving the appearance.

Rich dark wood gives a luxe feel to the refaced kitchen.
“One of the main reasons for the update was to get roller drawers in the pantry and in my lower cabinet," she says. "I love my new pull-out drawers. They are more convenient than the ones I had before. Now I can pull the drawer out and see where everything is, instead of getting on my hands and knees to see something in the corner. I got all new doors, new hinges, new drawers and new hardware. The new drawers are soft-close drawers, so they don’t slam shut. They also changed out the crown molding with new.” Kemple says she prefers a more traditional look, and looked through Pinterest and Houzz before she went out to the showroom. “I had a photo of a glass front cabinet from Pinterest that I loved, and they mimicked it beautifully. I had no glass fronts in our original cabinets and truly love the look,” she says. Last year Kemple replaced her hard wood floors, and says it was terribly inconvenient. Since everything had been created at the showroom, it just had to be brought to the house to be assembled. She was pleased that this was much easier. 20
Northland Lifestyle | November 2015
Glass fronts give Kemple and family a peek into their cabinets without unwanted dust.
“I had to put my things in tubs; I didn’t have to do everything, but I did anyway. It forced me to clean, so that was okay," Kemple shares. "They came in before and measured everything; you can’t believe how much time they took to measure. The process was a week long undertaking. I have been through remodeling be-
fore and really this was very smooth. The workers cleaned and protected everything in the kitchen surrounding the area. They used the garage for cutting and I was very pleased with the men and their abilities as carpenters. Two nice guys were here for the week, but I just went about my business."
Now Kemple can enjoy the look and feel of her new kitchen while still enjoying life without the full remodeling headache. After all, what's more fun, redoing a kitchen or cooking and eating in it? For Kemple, it's time to get back down to the business of enjoying her space. November 2015 | Northland Lifestyle

oxing is like a violent chess match; counter every move your opponent makes. Add that nervous feeling that comes when the overhead ring lights become bright enough for a surgeon to operate. The bell rings and the fight starts as your opponent approaches with a plan to throw punches at you. Failure to block out incoming punches can be painful, especially when you wake up. Yet you have a plan too, and your punches will soon be thrown and hopefully some will connect. Imagine boxing in front of several hundred people while trying not to catch a hard right to your jaw. Police and fire fighters from the Kansas City area will soon take this boxing challenge in the Guns N’ Hoses Boxing Tournament for a great cause. Proceeds from the Guns N’ Hoses boxing tournament go to the S.A.F.E. program, the Kansas City Crime Commission’s Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund. This program provides financial assistance to the families of police officers, fire fighters and emergency service personal who are killed in the line of duty in a nine county Kansas City metro area. 24

Jerry Deering is willing to fight for the support of the families of fallen warriors.
“We are having one of our main fund raisers on November 14 in the Grand Ball Room at Bartle Hall,” says Sonny Wilson, executive director of the S.A.F.E Program. “This is a boxing event between police officers and fire fighters. This is our 10th year for our boxing tournament and it’s an enjoyable event. We are always looking for people to attend this special evening. The fighters take their bouts very seriously.” The evening will feature 12 bouts, both male and female fighters. This will be a return for some who previously fought in this tournament, but a first for a few who are not sure what to expect. “This will be my first fight and I’m excited to participate,” says Jerry Deering, North Kansas City policeman. “I wrestled in front of crowds, but this will be my first boxing match. I had to study the rules of boxing. I have trained several weeks at the Police Athletic League Gym. I heard of this last year and knew it was an event I wanted to be involved with. I have always loved competitive sports and CONTINUED > this is for a great cause.” November 2015 | Northland Lifestyle

Fighters are required to workout in 20 training sessions before being considered to box. This may include boxing, jumping rope, running and assorted tactics for achieving top physical conditioning. Basic fundamentals of boxing are taught to those who have never fought before. This includes throwing different types of punches, protection from punches and many other aspects of boxing. Each fighter is paired with an opponent of his or her age and weight. Boxing trainers videotape each fighter and then study the tapes before deciding competition levels. This ensures a fair, well matched fight. Most experienced boxers that fought in the Golden Gloves, military or other venues are not considered for this tournament. Most of the fighters have only fought in the S.A.F.E Tournament. “Boxing matches consist of three, one-minute rounds,” Wilson says. “A one minute round may sound short, but raising your arms to hit or avoid being hit sometimes makes a minute seem a lot longer.” Fighters are fitted with 12-ounce boxing gloves, head gear and mouth pieces. Ring doctors are present at every fight and the fight is governed by Golden Gloves referees. Bouts are stopped when one individual is overpowering their opponent. Only one injury has occurred in the tournament’s 10-year history when a boxer tripped backwards and hit his neck on the ring rope. He was hospitalized overnight and released. Last year’s event made about $15,000 and the year before made about $28,000. The event hopes to make as much as possible to help these families. Raising attendance of this event is a priority. A common sized crowd is about 1,500 people. A V.I.P party is held before the fights for supporters that buy tables in the south-end glass enclosure overlooking Bartle Hall. Opportunities are made available for pictures with ring girls and other activities to make this event special. “I want to perform well and be competitive, win or lose,” Deering says. “I just want to put on a good show and make money for a good cause. But make no mistake; I am not stepping in the ring to lose.” For more information, you can check their website at SurvivingSpouseAndFamily.org or KansasCityGunsNHoses.com. he Gateway Arch, Missouri Botanical Garden and St. Louis Science Center are like fancy china dinnerware placed on the table when company comes over. They’re impressive tourist attractions, but they are not the everyday heart and soul of St. Louis. Eating and drinking at local restaurants, shops, breweries and bistros is a surer way to get to know the city’s character. Kansas City, St. Louis’ cool cousin to the west, is far more than barbecue. Similarly, St. Louis has more to offer than Italian on The Hill, Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, and the Anheuser-Busch brewery tour. Here are a dozen other local spots to explore.

Urban North: Extending the City
New development focuses on modern design.

t's hard not to notice the Urban North subdivision. With its decisive angles jutting into the sky at the 100 block of North Oak Trafficway, the model is certainly nothing like anything of the traditional homes on the blocks surrounding it. It is a distinctly modern design, and that's exactly what developer and builder Luke Owen was going for. Owen is the owner and founder of Owen Homes, A Design-Build firm, currently located in Smithville. While most of Owen's clientele lean more toward traditional silhouettes such as craftsman, prairie or farmhouse style, he had an inkling that there was a different kind of client with no options for what they dreamed of living in, mainly because he was one of those people. "I had been living on five acres in a 5000-square foot home in Smithville and we had done some modern designs on it and received a lot of positive feedback. What we heard most was 'I didn't think that I liked modern design, but I really like this'. As we did more basement
finishes and renovations that featured modern finishes, we kept hearing that. Unfortunately that size of lot and house became a little too much to handle once the business really picked up so we started looking for a place where we could create a modern home on a smaller tract of land," says Owen. What Owen found when he looked is that modern houses are few and far between in the Northland, and where they do occur, they tend to be a lightning rod of controversy. The stark departure from traditional home design can be a polarizing issue in an established community. As with so many things many as far as living spaces go, it seems to be a love or hate situation. Owen decided to try to create a community of people that fell on the 'love' side of the spectrum. Partnering with Karelyn Geiger of Geiger Real Estate and DRAW-Architecture and Urban Design, he found 10 acres of wooded land within walking distance of the nearby strip center and starting plotting the development of what is rapidly becoming Urban North, with 17 of the 24 plots left as of this writing. The parcel of land is ideally situation with easy highway access, plenty of available conveniences such as gas stations, restaurants and grocery stores. He says the name 'Urban North' comes from his desire to extend the modern style that is so often found in the urban core into the more inviting suburbs. Owen broke ground last April and after putting in the streets and other infrastructure, started building the first homes in December of 2014. September of this year brought the opening of the model and its first two tenants, of which Owen is one. As the commercial says, he's not just the founder of Urban North, he's a client. In addition to the 24 plots, he intends to build a playground and pavilion for community gatherings. The other residents, Amber and Toby Jennings, were attracted to how different the designs of Urban North were. Coming from a more traditional 1960s raised ranch, they were looking for an opportunity to move into something more fresh and modern. After looking for a modern option for more than a year, they happened to drive by the sign for the still unbuilt Urban North. CONTINUED >

URBAN NORTH (CONTINUED)
After connecting with Owen, they decided to take the plunge. In addition to embracing the clean lines and open, airy spaces, Urban North has another benefit. The development is poised to become the only entirely LEED and Energy Star for homes certified subdivision in the metro area. Owen says that while it was not the focus of the development, the small changes that are built in to each home with a comparably small initial investment will reap huge benefits over the life of each home. Each home is built with upgraded insulation, HVAC systems, fresh air exchanges and rain barrels for irrigation of the drought resistant landscaping and fescue-bluegrass lawn. Anderson

100 Series windows with Smartsun tinting helps to lower heating and cooling costs. LED lighting throughout also means long lasting and low cost for energy bills. Low flow faucets help to cut down on water waste. Each home is also prepped for solar panel installation if desired. Although Owen Homes is not specifically focused on sustainable design, Owen says that it makes too much sense to not pursue it. "For what is a small investment, home owners can really see returns over the years with this technology. It just makes sense to put in the effort now," says Owen. For the Jennings family, the energy efficiency is just icing on the cake. "I care about the environment--I recycle and drive a Prius--but LEED certification wasn't my primary stipulation for buying a home. It was attractive enough to pay the premium for it," says Toby. For the Jennings, the style makes all the difference. The couple worked with Owen to choose all of the colors and finishes for the house so that it was move in ready. The modern background will provide fresh palette for Amber, who as a pinup photographer, has fallen in love with design touches from multiple decades. Already, a turntable and a collection of vinyl records takes its place in the corner of the living room, next to a
fireplace that separates the living room from the dining space. Color and shape take center stage with their bold palette of blues, greens and chrome. What began as a search for a place to call home for Luke Owen has become a place for people with an appreciation for something different. And while Owen Homes loves and takes pride in the traditional homes that they design and build, he has a special place in his heart for what he calls 'warm and inviting modern'. No, it's not an oxymoron. It's home.

or owner Gail Dugdale, the best part about making a sale at Main Street Goods and Goodies is not the sale at all. It’s meeting people and seeing the expression on their faces when they find that special thing that makes them happy. Dugdale opened her antique and gift shop on Main Street in Liberty five years ago, but she’s been in the antique business much longer. She purchased her first antique when she was a teenager; that began a lifelong appreciation for the craftsmanship in items that were created when things were built to last. “It’s an interesting time for people to be decorating their homes,” observes Dugdale. “In addition to the traditional styles of antique furniture, there are the clean lines of Mid-Century, the strong presence of Industrial, the charm of Cottage, and the list goes on. People can create the type of space that best suits their needs and personalities. From fine antiques to up-cycled and repurposed, if it creates a space that makes them happy, then it works.” “I guess my favorite style of decorating would be considered eclectic.
44
Northland Lifestyle | November 2015
Above: Gail with her sister, Penny Gibbs, and granddaughter, Jordan Dugdale Right: Adults will relish old time favorites.
For example, Farmhouse easily blends with Shaker, and Cottage Style with French. I think the look of the individual piece is more important than sticking with one particular style.” Dugdale advises there are many great ways to add interest and color to a room. Antiques and vintage items such as an original watercolor, a beautiful old mirror, the perfect piece of pottery, or a stunning piece of glassware offer a vast array of ways to accessorize a space “I think one of the things to remember when decorating is to not overdo it. If you’re not careful, a crowded space can end up feeling like a flea market. There are so many choices regarding color, from Shabby Chic that is usually
very monochromatic, to Boho Chic (Bohemian) that’s really busy with lots of vivid colors and patterns," she says. "People just need to decide what they want the overall feel of their space to be.” “At the end of the day, when we walk into our home, we want it to welcome and comfort us, energize us, and be that space we are happy to share with our family and friends. Decorating with vintage and antique items can help achieve that. It blends the past with the present and just by its many choices can create a 'now' that is totally unique and equally special.” In Dugdale’s store, there is just a little bit of everything. From large antique furniture pieces, vintage chandeliers, old books and picture frames to antique glassware and pottery. Racks of unique, vintage buttons hang nearby an array of vintage jewelry. In one corner, there’s a large selection of vintage tablecloths, dresser scarves, and doilies. In yet another corner of the store sits an assortment of Industrial Chic pieces. Right now, it seems anything with cubbies or drawers, with aged or utilitarian design, anything that used to be in a factory or office, is premium. Yes, it’s true. What’s old is truly new again. An antique cabinet showcases letterpress art prints and bookmarks by Tag Team Tompkins (created by Dugdale’s sister and niece) whose artwork celebrates words of wit and wisdom from the past. You can find hand sewn doily pillows made by her sister-in-law, and Pickwick & Co. Candles (a locally made candle line). And, not to leave out the beach lovers, “I put together Little bags of Beach Therapy, a small bag of shells that can add a tropical touch to your home or take you to the Caribbean when you’re stuck in the Midwest.” CONTINUED >
MAIN STREET GOODS (CONTINUED)
One of the most unique features of the shop is the “and goodies” part. There is a Victorian candy counter filled with candies that take customers on a trip down memory lane. It’s a great place to pick up some Chick-O-Sticks or root beer barrels or any of the 30 different flavors of old fashioned stick candy. If you’re thirsty, you can choose from 25 unique flavors of ice -cold soda pop in glass bottles from the 1920’s cooler. Creamy root beers and cream sodas are always on hand; there’s even a line called Totally Gross Sodas that’s a big hit with kids. “It’s fun to hear shoppers reminisce while walking around and relating found pieces to past experiences,” Dugdale says with a smile. “It’s just one of the many rewards of owning this place.” You can visit Main Street Goods and Goodies at 16 N. Main St. in Liberty, MO 64068 or find them online on Facebook.

Burlington Mattress: Giving a bed to those in need ARTICLE LISA ALLEN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
E
d Collins doesn’t want to talk about business. Let me rephrase that: if you’re in the market for a new mattress, he wants to talk to you about his selection of high-end options at warehouse prices. After only five years in business, the company Collins started with his wife and daughter in the garage of their home has grown to seven retail locations in the Kansas City metro as well as locations in Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Georgia, and Texas. Burlington Mattress became the number one volume dealer in the country its first year in business and was able to boast complete—as in 100 percent--customer satisfaction. And he’ll tell you that as the company has grown so has the staff, but that everyone who works at Burlington Mattress—technically family or not—is treated like family. He’ll tell you that a pure love of what they do is the common thread between every employee, and that team members consistently challenge themselves personally and professionally. 48
Northland Lifestyle | November 2015
He’ll tell you that Burlington Mattress is more than a business. It’s a family, and every family has a story. Ed is a retired Kansas City Fire Department Battalion chief. His son, Phillip, who now works in the business, is a Navy veteran. “They give so much,” says Collins, speaking of those who serve. “When Phillip was overseas, it made us think, how many other families are missing someone? Anyone who hasn’t been there doesn’t truly know what they’ve sacrificed for the rest of us.” To honor those who serve, Burlington Mattress offers a 10 percent discount to every service member or veteran. In November, to commemorate Veteran’s Day, Burlington Mattress gives veterans with financial obstacles a mattress. For free. It’s on the honor system; veterans are asked to present proof of service—DD214, active military card, or reservist card—and are then given a king-sized mattress. It’s a little thing, according to Collins, compared to what those who serve have done for all of us. To date, Burlington Mattress has given away more than 1,200 mattresses to veterans in need. “We recognize that without their sacrifices, we wouldn’t have so many of the freedoms that we often take for granted,” says Collins. “We wouldn’t have the opportunity to own a company and to live the American dream. We’re thankful, and this is just one way to show it.”
Veterans aren’t the only folks who have a place to lay their heads at night thanks to Collins and his team; when Loren Halifax of FOX4 called and said FOX4’s Love Fund for Children was looking for a mattress company to work with to purchase beds for children in need, Collins obliged. “I talked with Lisa Herron (Love Fund for Children’s executive director), and she said they could buy the mattresses, but they needed a place to store them," Collins says. "We went back and forth about the particulars like quantities and such. They needed about $50,000 worth of beds. That’s how many children are in need of a bed to sleep in. We didn’t sell Love Fund the mattresses; we donated them. When you realize that kids are sleeping on the floor,” says Collin, “it’s the right thing to do. You know, I’ve been on the other side of that; I’ve seen need as a fire chief, and as a family we’ve been close needing help from others. We’re blessed now with a successful business. We don’t need anything, but others do. Love Fund for Children is a phenomenal organization; if I could encourage anyone to do something to make a difference, it would be to support them.” Learn more at KCBed.com.

Parting Thoughts
The Forgotten Holiday WORDS RACHEL C. MURPHY
C
hristmas creep. That's what retailers call the race to take down Halloween decorations and put up Christmas displays. And I, for one, do not like it. This is more than just my natural inclination toward fist shaking and muttering the holiday equivalent of 'Get off my lawn' at overly eager merchandisers. Someone has to stand up for Thanksgiving and I guess that someone is me. It's one of my favorite holidays (oh, who am I kidding--I love any excuse to eat, so the one closest to me is generally my favorite) if for the simplicity of its purpose--to give thanks and reflect on all that you have, no matter how meager it is. I see Thanksgiving as a reason to gather, and--since my family has never cared about football--to break bread and enjoy each other's company, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Westminster Dog Show. It's the appropriate time to start listening to Christmas music, when the Vince Guaraldi Trio is welcome at any table. It's the time that I, as an enthusiastic if not always effective cook, can stretch my muscles and try new things while still savoring old favorites. I will never forget my first Thanksgiving as a married woman. It was my family's turn for the holiday and I invited them over to our house. My mother has long been over the excitement of cooking Thanksgiving dinner and I was more than happy to take the reins. I shopped carefully, looking up recipes and trying to find the perfect-yet-still affordable table linens. When the day came, I got up early, eager to start cooking, or at least to have a fully cooked turkey on the table by the time that we normally have dinner, in the 2-3 p.m. range. Cooking a new meat is always an adventure and for me, this was my first time cooking a whole bird, chicken or turkey or otherwise and apparently I had some misconceptions about their anatomy. Blame it on McDonald's, but I never knew there was so much mutilation of the animal in the process of cooking. Pulling the neckbones and giblets out of the cavity was embarrassing enough, for me and for my empathy for the bird. What a life, to grow up without a care and then to have your own neck shoved into your torso! But I took them out and lovingly patted and salted and peppered and herbed the bird and tucked it into its 58

warm nap spot for the next few hours. After making all the side dishes, I pulled the bird out of the oven and gazed upon its beauty. It was golden brown and glistening, ready to be carved into the best meal I had ever prepared. I placed it on a beautiful serving dish that we had received as a wedding present and brought it to the table, ready to reenact a Norman Rockwell painting. I sliced into what I thought was the succulent breast. And I hit bone. I tried again, from a different angle. Did I get the boniest turkey in the history of Thanksgiving? Risking embarrassment, I asked my mother if I was doing it right. That's when we realized that I didn't know where the breast of a turkey is. I had cooked the whole bird upside down. Apparently this particular piece of fowl had a very puffy undercarriage and I just assumed after the neck business that I could season it and plop it in and move on. I was wrong. I cooked it upside down and then proudly served it upside down. Who knew? After a heart laugh at my expense and a very messy flip, I finally got to cut into what was, by all accounts, a very juicy breast, having cooked with the juices flowing into it for three hours. It's actually a technique. Of course it is! I knew that all along! I was just testing them... Thanksgiving is about the people you love and those that love you. That's what we have to be thankful for, no matter what orientation your turkey ends up.
