Lifestyle Letter

To Sir, With Love

JUNE 2016

A

h, June. June is the month where fragrant smoke fills the air, as a thousand backyard BBQ kings light the coals and show the family how grilling is done. It's when after work baseball leagues hit their stride and we start spending more time in the park with the kids and less time in front of the TV. And on June 19th, we celebrate the men that anchor our families--Dads. Of course, women can BBQ , land a base hit and play with the kiddos as well, but in this issue, we are focusing on the men in our community that make it great. Men like Andrew Potter, 29, who decided long ago that he was going to be a leader. His inclination has proven to be true, although in a different way than he first thought-instead of making a career in the military, he is teaching people leadership at his new rock climbing gym, RoKC. John Putnam took a passion—vintage watches—and made it into a thriving business that draws worldwide acclaim. Even President Obama stopped in for a peek last year! Now he's expanded his vision into more vintage goods with the space next door to Cool Vintage Watches, 107 Main. He's taking manly in a definitely stylish direction. Or maybe you're more interested in music. If so, the 'Fast' Johnny Ricker is right up your alley. This Northland-born and bred guitarist has opened for some of the biggest names in music but still loves playing the hometown gigs too. You may be able to see him on a stage in KC soon. As we celebrate Father's Day this year, let's give kudos to the men in our lives that make it so special. They are our coaches, caregivers, and compatriots. They have shown us how to work and loved showing us how to play as well. Whether you have a grandfather, uncle, father, brother, son, spouse or just a dear friend that inspires you, let him know this month. CORRECTIONS:

The duo bested more than 170 debate teams from across the country and finished 6-2 in the preliminary rounds to advance to the elimination round. Hansen and Johnson beat Southern Illinois University in the finals while arguing in the affirmative on the topic: “ The United States federal government should require all telecommunications companies to provide backdoor access to their encryption protocols.” “Unlike athletics, there are no divisions in college debate. We debate against such schools as the University of Oregon, the University of California-Berkeley or the University of Missouri,” says Director of Debate Kyle Dennis. “ The results show that our best students can compete with their best students.” In 2014, the debate squad was declared the 2014 NPDA College Debate National Champions, awarded to the school with the best showing among the school’s top four teams. This year marks the first time a Jewell duo team has claimed the championship.

usic is the sweet seasoning of imagination. Those that love rock and roll or blues have private fantasies about standing in front of a big crowd, singing “Free Bird” and shredding the guitar solo with notes played to perfection. Many of us will never follow through, but some paid their dues and live the dream. Johnny Ricker, a Park Hill High School graduate of 1972 dove into this dream early. I remember a spring day at Park Hill Junior High school when Ricker and his band of Steve Walker, Tim Rice and Mike Johnson played “Wipeout,” the Safaris’ classic that featured memorable drum work. Ricker’s guitar playing was perfect, yet who would have thought that young man would someday become a legend with the nickname “Fast,” as in “Fast Johnny Ricker.” “I grew up on Houston Lake in the northland and my neighbor, Richard Clayton, started playing guitar when the Beatles came out about 1964,” Ricker says. “He showed me some notes and I realized that was what I always wanted to do, play guitar.” Ricker started taking guitar lessons at Jenkins Music Company but was eventually blessed to take guitar lessons for several years in North Kansas City from the great Herb Kratoska, a veteran guitar and banjo virtuoso who was well know from Hollywood to Kansas City, often performing on KMBC television programs. Ricker learned tunes like “Secret Agent Man,” “Apache,” and others songs of the 1960’s and sometimes before. 20

“I would bring in an album and play Herb a song,” Ricker says. “He took the album home and worked out the chords and notes for me. He had discounts at Gibson Instruments and helped me buy my first guitar.” Ricker never thought about being a star, he just wanted to play and never stop playing. He learned Mr. Kratoska’s chosen tunes and hundreds more while inventing ways to make unique guitar notes. Many hours of practice

paid off, developing into a fine career. He found chords from other artists and studied their technique to create his own style. He studies different phases of blues and rock artists like Jimmy Hendrix, Jeff Beck or any artist with unique abilities. This has led to his individual artistic status. “I played for other bands, but eventually started my own band,” Ricker says. “My wife, Delight Ricker, encouraged this and then she

started booking us at places like the Grand Emporium, Night Moves and the Spirit Fest.” Ricker has opened for bands like Leon Russell, Johnny Winter, George Thorogood, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Commander Cody, Double Trouble and many other top bands. He played on stage with some of the best including Bo Diddley. “I remember waiting on stage for Bo Diddley to rehearse,” Ricker says. “He finally CONTINUED >

walked in the back door, stood in the theater and yelled, “Do you know how to play Bo Diddley style?” We acknowledged, “Yes,” and he said, “Well forget it. Everybody thinks they know how to play my style.” The show was successful and Bo Diddley’s style was preserved. Today Ricker and his band play across the Midwest. Recently he highlighted songs by Cream, Led Zeppelin and other classics mixed with several of his own songs co-written by Delight. Their performance was shaded with guitar riffs and tones that made veteran guitar artists in the crowd at Frank James’ Saloon in Parkville, Missouri wonder how he made those epic sounds. His band is composed of bass guitar played by Johnny’s son, Davis Ricker, with heavy drum licks by Gary Miller to complete their addictive sound. “This has been a long, strange trip,” Ricker says. “I decided to take some time off, but now we are booked at places like Knuckleheads in Kansas City and other venues. My entire family of six kids plays music and we sometimes jam when everyone can get together. What could be better?” You can learn more about Johnny Ricker’s band and future shows at FastJohnny.com.

Climbing to New Heights NORTH KANSAS CITY WELCOMES A NEW KIND OF CHALLENGE ARTICLE RACHEL MURPHY PHOTOGRAPHY LANI ODELL AND PROVIDED

S

ometimes the passions that you harbor as a kid stick around for a while. For Boy Scout, Army officer and rock climbing enthusiast Andrew Potter, he found that his passion for the summit has turned into a thriving business in the heart of North Kansas City. Potter and his brother, Frank, are the founders and owners of RoKC, a new climbing gym in downtown North Kansas City. Located at 1501 Howell Street in a building that was originally built to construct tanks and later to rebuild trains, the 15,000 square feet of space now houses a series of 40-foot walls with climbing routes that change on a regular basis. The gym also offers a bouldering room with lower elevation climbs that don't require 'roping in'. A gym area allows members to strength train or even take a yoga class to maximize their flexibility, something that comes in handy when the perfect chicken head (a type of hand hold) is just out of reach.

24

Northland Lifestyle | June 2016

The gym is set up as a training facility for the experienced climber and the novice alike. All climbers are taught how to properly harness up for safety but for those wishing to advance their skills, the gym also offers training classes in top rope belaying, lead belaying and climbing. Sound complicated? Don't worry. The staff is made up of enthusiasts that are excited to bring the uninitiated into the fold. Equipment is available for rent by the day or a pro shop can help to set up those that want to own their own equipment. For Potter, climbing has always been a part of his life, from the time that he started when his family traveled from base to base with his father, a career Army veteran, to learning more while in the Boy Scouts to when he and a friend started the climbing club at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. While most of his climbing was indoors throughout high school, in college, he started climbing outdoors in a natural setting. At one point he was climbing three to five days a week and leading trips around the area.

Andrew Potter, left, and his brother Frank are teaching leadership as well as climbing technique.

Sometimes the passions that you harbor as a kid stick around for a while. For Boy Scout, Army officer and rock climbing enthusiast Andrew Potter, he found that his passion for the summit has turned into a thriving business in the heart of North Kansas City.

Potter joined the Army after college, with the idea that he would make that a career, but soon found that his true calling was in the civilian world, teaching the leadership skills that he gained in the military. While trying to figure out how to do that and make a living, he continued climbing wherever he was stationed. His passion quickly became a vocation and he started looking into the feasibility of starting a climbing gym of his own. "I quickly realized that I didn't want to make the Army a 20-year career, but I still wanted to do something that I loved to do but I also wanted a way to serve others, coming from the service aspect of the Army. There's no way that I would be able to truly enjoy what I was doing if I was only doing it for myself or a paycheck. My main passion is leadership and helping people to grow," says Potter.

Breaking into the leadership as a career business is tough though, as Potter quickly found out. Using climbing as the medium, he found the best way to serve and help others while teaching valuable life skills. His gym's all-encompassing approach to a singular sport is a testament to the foresight of his vision. In addition to climbing for fun, the gym is a place for team building events, climbing camps for kids, and those wanting to find new ways to push themselves physically. While climbing outdoors safely requires a partner in order to belay each other, at the gym, an auto belay system means that solo climbers can come at any time during the gym’s extensive hours and pit him or herself against the wall and nothing but the wall. Climbing is a sport that offers equal opportunity for young and old, male or female, to learn trust, agility and how to make the most of what you have in any moment. For more information, visit ClimbKC.com.

Social areas allow climbers to congregate and get to know each other.

CHARMING OWNERS BRING VIVID VIETNAMESE FLAVORS TO THE NORTHLAND

I

f you're used to the same old, same old when it comes to your sandwiches, you're in for a delightful wake-up call. Bahn mi have arrived in the Northland with a vengeance and sandwich lovers should unite in celebration. If the phrase 'Taste the rainbow' wasn't already copyrighted, then it would be quite apropos at the newest eatery on North Oak Trafficway, Bun Mee Phan. The joint, and it's tiny so the term 'joint' definitely applies, is the brain child of Jimmy Phan and Kaylee Nguyen. After opening in March, the shop, specializing in what they refer to as an 'optional' menu, has truly taken off. Their menu is set up based on proteins, of which they offer nine options, in six different ways, from bahn mi to bun to tacos. Add a killer chicken curry soup and I have a new favorite destination for the Vietnamese dishes that I've grown to love, all without a trip to Columbus Park. Hallelujah! I started with the basics--bahn mi. Bahn mi is one of the most recognized Vietnamese sandwiches but it's also a fusion dish in and of itself. The sandwich is built on the only vestiges that remain of the French occupation of Vietnam, crusty French baguette, in this case provided by the always delicious Le Monde Bakery in North Kansas City. For my first outing, I chose the grilled pork but the options include a cold cut combo, steamed pork, Chinese BBQ pork,

lemongrass chicken, lemongrass tofu, grilled beef, caramelized pork belly or fried tilapia. Your protein of choice is then piled high with crunchy lightly pickled carrots, daikon radish, cilantro, fresh onion and sometimes surprisingly spicy jalapeno, with a smear of mayonnaise. The resulting sandwich is a handful. The combination of rich pork and fresh, crisp vegetables combines perfectly with the crispy baguette and tender bread inside. It's truly a contained meal, portable and perfect. At prices ranging from $4.95 to $6.25, it's incredibly affordable. You'll feel bad about ever stopping for a footlong again. The bahn mi can also be served on bánh tiêu, a hollow Vietnamese pastry--the less sweet, more friendly to savory cousin to the donut. While they don't regularly offer pho, the Vietnamese staple that most people expect, they do offer chicken curry soup ($6.95). The soup rivals one of my other favorite chicken curry soups, the one at Le Monde Bakery. This one is truly a meal--huge chunks of chicken mingle with creamy potato halves and rough cut carrots in a creamy but not heavy coconut broth. Served with limes and a baguette, this would be the perfect cold weather day soup. Going back for something of the non-sandwich variety, I tried the lemongrass chicken on bun or rice noodles. This was served very CONTINUED >

traditionally, with the fresh accouterments on the side of lettuce, carrots, daikon radish, onion and cilantro with more of the atomic jalapeno. (Pro tip: If you really don't like spice, just ask them to forgo it from the start.) The chicken was delicately spiced and very tender. Doused with the small ramekin of nuoc cham, the dish has just a hint of sweetness. The overall dish is a great balance of fresh flavors with the veggies and chicken standing out. They also offer their proteins on rice, in a spring roll or on three tacos. I tried the spring rolls themselves and was blown away by how fresh they were. First, they were the size of a small burrito. Second, they were filled with the great fresh and pickled veggies that grace all of the other dishes, making for bite after flavorful bite. Here's a spring roll that you won't want to douse in peanut sauce. Phan says that they will be introducing specials periodically on weekends (to be announced on Facebook) but honestly, there's so many different variations on their regular menu that you'll have plenty to play with for quite a while. They also offer bubble teas in a variety of flavors as well as iced Vietnamese coffee. Most importantly, Phan, Nguyen and their entire staff offer a broad smile and hello to every person that walks through the door. Bun Mee Phan is sure to become a staple of my Northland dining habit.

Cool Vintage Watches Makes Timely Expansion ARTICLE PEGGY PAROLIN PHOTOGRAPHY JOEL SCHNEIDER

J

ohn Putnam didn’t plan on becoming a watch collector. He hadn’t originally planned on opening Cool Vintage Watches, and most certainly didn’t expect to expand his business within a few years. But, he did. After spending more than 20 years marketing vintage watches and watch accessories online, Putnam became burnt out on strictly online sales. He missed the day-to-day interaction with people. He didn’t give up his online business but did make the decision to expand his offering of collectibles and create a place people would visit and want to come back. In the fall of 2012, he opened the brick and mortar version of Cool Vintage Watches surrounding his collection of timepieces with an array of memorable antiques, collectibles, and cool stuff, in general. Less than four years later, a store known primarily for its watches evolved into a wall-to-wall shrine of classic vinyl, antique typewriters, ageless radios, stereos, and cameras. Long forgotten toys, collectible writing implements, nostalgic signage, and even a motorcycle crowd the floor space, all under the watchful eyes of a pair of stuffed pheasants and mounted deer heads. As much eclectic as it is electric, the merchandise quickly outgrew its space. So, instead of answering the door when opportunity knocked, Putnam knocked out a wall and built a passageway. That’s just how he rolls. In May, Cool Vintage Watches’ companion store opened. Aptly named 107 Main, the extension of the space continues the theme of uniquity. Nearly 200 vintage watches remain showcased in the vicinity of assorted watch straps and leather bands in the original man cave of a store. The timeworn brown leather sofa and odd lot of chairs, creased by memories and frequented by visitors, greet newcomers as they enter Cool Vintage Watches.

“I’ve always had a flair for antiques and collectibles,” offers Putnam. "I figure if I like something, most likely someone else will like it, too. Much of this,” he gestures toward the collectibles in his original shop, “came from people walking in and seeing items that remind them of memorabilia they’ve been holding onto and are ready to part with. It’s always interesting and of course, everything has a story.”

John Putnam, owner of Cool Vintage Watches and 107 Main.

As for his expansive collection of hard-to-find watches, Putnam finds enviable additions all over the world. “Watch collectors are more common than you might think,” explains Putnam. “One reason men like collecting watches is they’re unique and even historical. Imagine owning the 60’s Omega Speedmaster that traveled to the moon or the Heuer Monaco worn by Steve McQueen in the ‘70s movie, Le Mans! Another consideration is watch collecting doesn’t take up much space compared to cars and motorcycles. They can also be an investment. If you buy the right watch at the right price, in a few years it could be worth more. Plus, you have the enjoyment of wearing the watch.” “My general expertise is with pieces from 1910 to 1980, but I collect a little bit of everything,” says Putnam. “My current display ranges from watches made in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s to cool dive watches from the 60’s and 70’s, and a mix of newer Rolex and Omega watches. But it’s the vintage watches that really stand out,” Putnam muses, pointing to several epic watches. “They have a mystique all their own.” “Wear one of these and you can walk through a crowd of a hundred people and not see another watch like the one you’re wearing. They’re addictive; you buy one and you know there’s another better or harder to find timepiece out there. All of a sudden, you become a collector.” Putnam, through his web presence at CoolVintageWatches. com, has developed an international following. The fact there are only a handful of stores similar to his makes his shop even more attractive. The ultimate validation of Putnam’s success in marketing vintage timepieces came when Hodinkee, the world’s leading online wristwatch magazine, featured Cool Vintage Watches on its site. Interest in vintage watch collecting continues to grow at an aggressive pace. While watches were once just a functional item,

that’s not the case anymore, explains Putnam “The reason people wear them now is for style and personality, to make a statement. Since being in this business, I’ve sold watches all over the world. David Letterman’s assistant called me one day. He was looking for a watch for Paul Shaffer. I sold Andre Agassi’s sister a watch for John Mayer. Professional athletes shop here. I’ve even sold to several movie houses when they’ve needed watches for movies.” And, then, of course, there was the surprise visit from President Obama when he was in Parkville a couple of years ago. Obama saw the ‘vintage watches’ sign and couldn’t resist. He popped in, checked out the watch collection, and tried on a 1950’s Rolex Bubble Back he favored, but, no, he didn’t buy it. The addition of the 107 Main store to the north of Cool Vintage Watches allows Putnam to further diversify his collection of merchandise and better showcase his wealth of treasures. The centerpiece of the new space is a 1940’s hand carved wooden bar that had been lingering in the family’s basement. It sets the mood for the cheeky scotch and whiskey glasses displayed nearby. New and vintage barware, heavy duty Siberian coolers, poker related items, travel backpacks and satchels, wallets, and other leather items set the mood, creating an ambiance attractive to men and women of all ages. 107 Main will also offer menswear by custom clothier, J. Hilburn. With an ever-growing collection of vintage everything, Putnam wanted to feature some newer high-end items he could simply reorder. “This expansion gives me room to expand my vinyl and audio collection where it can really make a statement. And, of course, I’ll find a way to add more watches over here,” smiles Putnam. “Eventually, I want to have bourbon tastings and other events in this space, too. I want others to enjoy the place as much as I do.”

Provisions must be acquired before mounting an expedition throughout the Northland. Should the explorer be inclined to indulge, The Outlaw Cigar Company (6234 N. Chatham Ave., OutlawCigar.com) is an unabashedly testosterone-fueled den of cigars, accessories, clothing, and camaraderie. Cigar aficionados are still allowed to indulge inside the smoke shop despite the citywide smoking ordinance. For those that do not smoke cigars regularly, consider the Arturo Fuente Hemingway, a $1015 line of mild- to medium-bodied cigars suitable for novices and experienced smokers alike. Next, a stop at one or more local taprooms for food and drink is in order. The Northland is home to many local breweries. Rock & Run Brewery & Pub (110 E. Kansas St., Liberty, RockAndRunBrewery.com) in Liberty’s historic square offers a diverse selection of beers made in-house and a rotating selection of other craft beers. Favorites include Liberty Squared Golden Ale and 5K IPA. The pub menu includes pizza, sandwiches, pasta, and more.

HERE’S THE BEEF OLD-FASHIONED BUTCHER SHOP IN LIBERTY PROVIDES HEART HEALTHY BEEF ARTICLE JENNIFER HIGGINS PHOTOGRAPHY JOEL SCHNEIDER

o-owners of fairly new The Upper Cut in Liberty, Chris and Kelsi Peuster both grew up with a passion for livestock, and have turned that love into a goal of improving the United States beef industry. For them, this starts with a local butcher shop that provides a heart healthy beef, raised on their working farm. “One of Chris's college roommates introduced us to Akaushi beef a few years ago and we were forever changed as beef consumers. Akaushi beef is a Japanese breed of cattle that is heart healthy and grades in the top 2% of beef in the world. It has been argued to be the most palatable beef in the world. What makes it heart healthy is the monounsaturated and saturated fatty acid ratios actually promotes good cholesterol, kind of like an avocado. It's chock-full of good fats, and it tastes amazing,” Kelsi Peuster says. CONTINUED >

The St. Pius X senior who shattered the Missouri State High School Activities Association career scoring record last October— right before breaking his leg—says his achievement is more about the team than it is about him. “I was glad to break the record,” says Cissell, “but I don’t see it as just my achievement.” Cissell credits his coach, Todd Ashby, with bringing the record to his attention and consistently encouraging him to keep working to CONTINUED > break the record. “We planned together,” says Cissell. “And my teammates were always there for me, too. I missed a lot of chances before it actually happened, but they kept pushing me forward, kept encouraging me. And then when it happened, everyone was really happy.” Cissell, a Liberty native, started playing soccer when he was two years old. His dad, Chris, is the head coach of UMKC’s women’s soccer team. “My love of soccer started with my dad. He put a soccer ball next to me when I was born,” says Cissell. “He inspires me and he sets the highest standards for me so that I can continually improve.” Before high school Cissell played for Sporting Academy. When he started at St. Pius X, he recruited friends to join the team. “Our goalie is my best friend,” he says. “He’d never played until junior year. But he was really good and I knew he’d make the team better.” That move—recruiting friends to play a sport he loves—seems to embody Cissell’s philosophy on life, who says he spends his free time working part-time at HyVee, playing other sports like tennis and basketball, and hanging out with family and friends. “I try to have as much fun as possible because I know I won’t always be able to do that,” he says. “I’m pretty busy, but I really like everything I do and I know that nothing is truly impossible. It’s mind over matter. If you love something, you work hard at it; otherwise, there’s no point.” Cissell will study business and play soccer at UMKC next fall. He’s excited to stay in Kansas City. “I love Kansas City,” he says, “and I’m a big Sporting fan, of course.” Cissell says he’ll take one particular lesson with him as he transitions from high school to college. “Breaking the record taught me to never give up,” he says. “There will always be lows in my career, but the highs feel really, really good because of the lows. It’s all about working hard, having fun, and keeping things in perspective. It’s not always about winning.”

BMW 528i with xDrive ENJOY DRIVING AGAIN

S

ometimes my wife and I don’t see eye to eye. Such is the case when it comes to automobiles. To her, a car is just a mode of transportation—a way to get from point A to point B. To me, a car is not just a way to get down the road, but rather a vehicle for excitement. I love to drive. In my 20s I owned a silver sports car that I drove whenever I had a spare moment. Twenty years and two kids later, I find myself driving an SUV. Now the time has come to look for a new vehicle. I need a family-friendly vehicle that will still get my heart pumping. After much investigation and many test drives, I found the BMW 528i with xDrive. On the outside, the BMW 528i is a classically refined sedan that will turn the heads of other drivers. It comes standard with 17-inch wheels, automatic and adaptive xenon headlights, LED accent lights and LED fog lights. As soon as I opened the door, I was anxious to get behind the wheel. The spacious and comfortable cabin beckons you to sit in the captain’s chair. When I sit in a car for the first time, I like to familiarize myself with its features. The BMW 528i does not disappoint when it comes to high-tech features and creature comforts, including auto-dimming heated mirrors, automatic wipers, sunroof, dual-zone cruise control, power-tilt-steering wheel and iDrive interface with a 10.2 inch display. For the music lover, it has a 12-speaker sound system, aux-in jack and 20 GB of digital music storage. Now for the best part—I started the engine. As the motor purred, I could almost hear the 40 plus years of refinement that went into its development. I pressed down hard on the gas pedal. CONTINUED >

Driver’s Notebook

(CON TI N U ED)

I was amazed how quickly this large sedan accelerates. It is truly impressive that this car can hit 60 mph in just over six seconds. The BMW 528i is all of this, while maintaining a sensible mpg—around 30 combined. The 8-speed automatic transmission performs flawlessly. However, if you want a truer driving experience, you can opt for manual drive and use the steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters. You will feel like a rock star! This model has the xDrive moniker, which means it exhibits incredible handling in all weather, including Missouri winters. The fine-tuned powertrain, suspension and steering system provide driving dynamics that are high precision while still smooth running. I could feel the sporty driving pleasure that the chassis transmitted from the road directly through the steering wheel. The end result is a vehicle that offers an exhilarating combination of sheer dynamism, comfort and everyday usability. When you are looking to buy your next family car, don’t settle for a boring old sedan or an adrenaline inhibiting SUV. Treat yourself to a luxury and pulse-boosting vehicle, the BMW 528i with xDrive. 58
