hristmas time is here. In my opinion there is nothing like this time of year. Bows and bells, Christmas lights everywhere, and the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping brings me joy. In our December issue, we are focusing on the uniqueness of an Arizona Christmas. What do you do when all you have in your front yard is a cactus? You wrap it in lights of course! Aside from this unique aspect of Christmas here, there are tons of other unique Christmas activities and traditions that take place in our desert wonderland. In this issue you will find yourself “Dreaming of an Arizona Christmas.”

Moms and dads, take a “Field Trip” with your kids to Santa’s Workshop. And no you don’t have to bundle up and buy a plane ticket to the North Pole. All you have to do is jump in the car for a short ride up to Flagstaff where Santa’s elves are awaiting your visit. There is no other experience like this anywhere else in the United States. The 9,000-square-foot workshop will take you and your kids through an experience that you won’t soon forget. So grab a coat and head up to Flagstaff to enjoy the wonder of the North Pole Experience. Read about the South Mountain Christmas Party in our Giving Back column. Although Christmas is a time of joy for so many people, there are still thousands of people throughout the world and throughout our own city that do not look forward to this time of year. There are children who don’t receive presents and parents who struggle just to keep a meal on the table. This great organization has been working to better this situation for so many in our Phoenix area. Be inspired to get involved and help touch the life of someone else this season. Ice-skating outside in Scottsdale? Yes! Because of the W Hotel, this is a possibility. For the second year in a row, the W Hotel in Downtown Scottsdale transforms their outdoor WET pool deck area into a winter wonderland. A 1,500-square-foot synthetic skating rink called CHILL will accompany the heated pool this year, allowing guests the option between time in the pool or time on the ice. This is definitely a winter activity unlike any other in the desert. Also remember to leave your calendars open so you don’t miss any of the neat winter activities going on all December long. Around Town SASSI Introduces Fall Menu SASSI, a restaurant that is known for serving authentic Italian dishes in North Scottsdale, recently released their new fall menu. Capturing the essence of autumn with their new dishes, SASSI emphasizes providing the freshest seasonal ingredients at all times. SASSI’s renowned Executive Chef Christopher Nicosia has created a menu featuring favorite fall ingredients such as butternut squash, wild mushrooms, roasted beets, duck and lamb. Phoenix Zoo Reaches Goal for Capital Campaign The Phoenix Zoo has reached its goal of raising $22.5 million for its first major capital campaign, which will allow it to fund several projects on the way toward creating a “World Class Zoo for a World Class City.” With these funds, the Zoo 12 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | December 2013

has built or is building three major state-of-the-art animal exhibits, a multi-purpose education and event center, a dramatic new front entry and a new volunteer and administration facility. Scottsdale’s Bell Lexus is a Sign of Growing Economic Activity in Scottsdale Bell Lexus North Scottsdale, a new 103,000-square-foot facility at the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Mayo Boulevard, recently opened. The dealership is expected to employ 95 people and reach $90 million in sales its first year. The new luxury car dealership on Scottsdale Rd. south of Loop 101 is a sign of growing economic activity in this important area of Scottsdale. “This is a crucial commercial area for Scottsdale’s economic future,” says Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane. “The new Bell Lexus North Scottsdale anchors an area of vacant land next to the freeway that will see some exciting and important activity in the years ahead.” Bell Lexus made the move from north central Phoenix to this new Scottsdale location to build a state-of-the art facility closer to many of their customers. Three Scottsdale projects earn top honors Scottsdale’s Tom’s Thumb Trailhead and the Nodal Water Garden earned top “Crescordia” awards recently at the Arizona Forward Association’s 33rd Annual Environmental Excellence Awards banquet. Arizona Forward called the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead a remarkably sustainable civic building (that) charters new territory not just for its environmental integration, but for its self-sufficiency, as the site is not connected to conventional municipal infrastructure. The Crescordia award recognized the city along with Fucello Architects and Redden Construction. Arizona Forward also lauded Nodal Water Garden by Arizona artist Jeff Zischke, saying it celebrates the strategic and economic role canals have played in the Valley’s growth. The temporary floating, solar-powered artwork was located in the canal between the Soleri and the Marshall Way bridges in downtown Scottsdale last November for one of Scottsdale Public Art’s annual Canal Convergence events. Scottsdale’s Via Dona Trail also received an Award of Merit. The Via Dona Trail connects neighborhoods to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, enhancing connectivity for bicyclists, pedestrians and equestrians in a way that preserves rural character while offering access for those with disabilities. Recently I visited one of my favorite stores, Rustic Stuff, located in the Promenade shopping plaza off Frank Lloyd Wright and Scottsdale Road, and marveled at the wonderful display of holiday decorations. Magical Christmas Decorations

Folk is extremely busy during the holidays decorating 50 to 60 homes. All year you find him shopping vigorously to find unique things to add to the holiday decorations he prides himself on having for his customers. His crews start the beginning of November bringing Christmas into the homes of many athletes, business owners, television personalities, winter visitors and even for a teacher who each year gives herself a decorated home as her Christmas present. There are decorating items for any budget and by planning ahead and checking out the 38 to 40 theme trees beautifully decorated in the store, you will catch the decorating fever. This year there are fan-

To add some new changes in your home decorating this year, start by investing in a great permanent tree. This is very critical as you cannot hang beautiful ornaments on a tree if the limbs are flimsy and cannot support the weight. The size of the tree is important; you will want one that can handle the size and weight of the ornaments you purchase. Next, choose your color

palette. Will you want dark, jewel tones, metallic colors or soft pastels? After that, you need to select a theme. Then add some big-impact items that complement the theme to give it a custom, designer look. Lights give depth and texture so be sure to purchase enough and decide if you will use one color or multiple colored lights that coordinate with the color theme. String your lights first by going from the inside of each branch to the outside, that way every limb is covered. “Tree skirts are too predictable so consider putting your tree inside something deep – like an old trunk, large planter box or something else you may have in your home,” offers Folk. Finish up with garland, six- to nine-feet long, around the tree, on the fireplace mantel, around an archway, on the buffet, entry table or around the chandelier. Also, try using some family heirlooms, small photo frames and other sentimental items to personalize your tree, centerpieces or other areas of your home.

t’s December and all month we prepare to celebrate the holidays making certain they are special for our children and family. But what about the children who were not fortunate enough to be born to parents in America? It isn’t something we like to think about, but abandoned children in countries like India are in such desperate need to be cared for. However, there is good news for them. Faiz Rahman knows firsthand the living conditions in India, having been born in Calcutta. He was born into a middle class family that fell on hard times. A sponsor from Georgia started sending him money and continued so he could be cared for and receive an education. He was able to go to college in California, where he received his master’s from Golden Gate Theological Seminary and later, his doctorate. It wasn’t until he was an associate pastor and began teaching in Texas that he was asked to visit a very remote

area in India that was so far away it was never visited by any missionary groups or received any aid. Poverty is extremely bad in the overpopulated country of India. Parents are forced to sell their children for money to buy food or the children are abandoned to the streets when their parents die. A shocking 16 million children have been forced into sexual slavery. “Right now there are more children in slavery in India than the entire African slave trade combined,” says Rahman. He saw a tremendous need and knew, with

God’s help, he could make a difference in these children’s lives. So, in 1998, he founded Good News India. Unlike some programs that give a meal and four hours of daycare, Rahman wanted to give 24/7 care that includes food, housing and an education, truly giving them a future and a hope. He hopes that some of these children will become the leaders needed to change the future of India.

A “Daddy” to 2,500

Currently there are 2,500 boys and girls being cared for in 26 orphanages, called Dream Centers. Those who have families can visit but the majority of them are orphans and Rahman is the only father they know. Good News India also operates a leper colony caring for 50 adults and 85 children who were banished by their country; as well as providing food, clothing and medication for 350 lepers in five different centers. Lepers who have been starving in jungles for 35 years or more are finally given hope and care. Rahman’s goal is to open 100 Dream Centers to care for thousands more who need to be rescued for their current living conditions. He speaks all around the world raising the awareness of the plight of these children and asking for support so he can continue his work.

ew images announce the arrival of the holiday season quite like those of a decorated Rockefeller Center: The glowing Christmas Tree towering over its iconic ice rink full of skaters of all ages has truly become a symbol of the joy that the winter months can bring. Though the Valley might be lacking in snowflakes and sub-zero temperatures, a winter wonderland of an entirely different sort can be found no further away than W Hotel in Downtown Scottsdale. For the second year in a row the hotel will be bringing a 1,500-squarefoot hybrid ice-skating rink to its outdoor WET pool deck area. The rink, called CHILL, is an eco-friendly sheet of synthetic ice that is actually constructed out of a fully recyclable polymer compound, which means there is no electricity required as well as zero emissions. The effect of the surface is similar to that of a frozen pond, which tends to be much slower than a refrigerated sheet, but definitely no less fun. “And the best part is that when you fall, it’s not cold, which for whatever reason just doesn’t seem to hurt quite as much,” says Ren 20 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | December 2013

Hirose, general manager of the W Scottsdale. The concept of CHILL originated at the W Los Angeles, where Hirose worked prior to transferring to the company’s Scottsdale location. Once established in his new home, it did not take long for him to realize that the idea of a rink under the stars in the desert was pretty much a no-brainer. “We have a lot of couples come out here on their first dates,” explains Hirose. “It’s really cool. A lot of people are looking for something outside of the usual ‘dinner and a movie’ to have a good time. I promise there is no pun intended, but coming out here is just a great place to break the ice.” CHILL is also available for private events, which makes sense, as nothing makes for a more entertaining company holiday party quite like seeing a coworker falling on their rear end time and time again while sipping on a frosty libation from the safety of a rink-side cabana. Last year’s inaugural rink utilized a significant portion of the actual pool area which caused the pool to be closed down for the

duration that CHILL was up and running. The 2013 version has been moved to atop the lawn of the WET pool deck which will leave the heated pool open throughout the month. This will allow for guests to choose between a dip in the water before or after a little bit of time on the ice. Installing the sheet of “ice” is a tad bit like putting together a really big puzzle. Each piece is brought in and laid side-by-side, and then the entire surface is sprayed down with a solution that blends away all the seams and leaves the surface slick. Friction from the skates does the rest, as it heats up and helps to make skating across it just a bit faster. Maintenance is as simple as sweeping throughout the day to keep obstructions off the top and an occasional thin coat of solution to smooth away the scrapes and gouges of general wear and tear. With the entire WET pool deck area decorated and lit-up for the season, CHILL will be open to ages over five years old to enjoy during the day. But when the sun goes down the scene will shift to a much more adult-oriented vibe, complete with live music, DJs, and a variety of specialty, winter-inspired cocktails to keep the soul warm and toasty as the thermostat drops.

“There really is an amazing scene out there as people are enjoying the pool deck and lounge alongside people that are there to try the skating,” adds Hirose. “And then there are those who are there to do both. They get there early to skate, and then end up staying for some cocktails and end up just really enjoying themselves.” CHILL will be open to guests and non-guests at the W Scottsdale from December 5-29. No advanced reservations are required, and guests are free to bring their own skates, though they are available to rent at the hotel. Admission to CHILL is $10 per hour. Times vary by day and event, so it is recommended to call before heading out just to make sure they are open for business. The Gift of the Season Hundreds of children from low income families celebrate Christmas at South Mountain Article by Michelle Guerrero

hen thinking about the upcoming holidays, many envision the Christmas tree trimmed with bright lights and festive ornaments. Resting under the tree are boxes covered with brightly colored paper, wrapped with ribbon and bows. Children sneak around the tree looking for those special gifts with a tag attached that reads their name. They shake each box to guess what might be inside. For many Valley families, this scenario is but a dream. Tough economic times cause parents to tighten their budgets and care for their children the best they can, by keeping a roof over their head, the electricity on and the water flowing, versus providing luxuries like holiday gifts. There are also many homeless families out there whose greatest Christmas wish is to provide a home for their children. City of Phoenix employees recognized a need 31 years ago, and began the South Mountain Children’s Christmas Party so that hundreds of Valley children who might not otherwise be able could share in the magic of the holidays. Since its inception, thousands of children have eagerly awaited Santa Clause’s arrival at the park to bring them that one special toy of the season. “The event is in real need this year, and we need more support,” says Lilly Perez, a city employee at the Travis L. Williams (TLW) Family Service Center. Perez has been assisting with the annual Christmas Party for the past five years. “There used to be 500 kids at the event each year, but we had to downsize to 300 because one of our major contributors passed away. His partner took over, but now due to economic down turn, he is unable to assist.” The donor’s large shoes have yet to be filled. “For a lot of children, this is the one toy they will get for Christmas,” says Perez. “There is such a need out there that people 26 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | December 2013

start trying to register in July.” The TLW Community Council and local agencies pull together to help the Children’s Christmas Party come to fruition, which takes place outdoors at the South Mountain Park Activity Complex on December 7. Event activities have included face painting, arts and crafts and visits from mascots from local sports teams. The Roosevelt School District will purchase about 500 large cookies for the kids. In past years, they’ve handed out snack bags to the children as well. Donors provide toys or gift cards so that TLW Community Council members can purchase gifts. “Everything is donated,” says Perez. “Even the Phoenix Fire Department helps out by bringing Mr. and Mrs. Clause in a fire truck. It’s touching to watch all the kids run up to the truck for their present.” Individuals help out as well, such as Steve and Leslie McLaughlin, a Phoenix couple who have stepped up to the plate to provide candy canes, fresh fruit and packaged snacks for the children. “I think it’s important to support efforts across the state that help people improve the lives of low income children and families,” says Leslie. “The problems that Lilly and others try to help are of a national nature, and we should all step up however we can.” Last year, Perez asked fellow employees to personally donate two boxes of candy canes each, because she couldn’t find another way provide them at the party. This year, thanks to the McLaughlins, this is one more item she can check off her list. Gifts are given to children between 3-10 years of age, who have pre-registered for the event. The TLW Community Council members aim to purchase gifts that are about $10 each. Stores like Walmart often

give discounts or honor black Friday prices to help them reach their goal, so more children can be included. Some of the gifts purchased include scooters, basketballs, games, dolls and cars. “Volunteers are always welcome and it’s never too late for donations,” says Perez. “We accept donations all year long and will store any items for the Children’s Christmas Party.” Perez explains that their human services department also has case workers that work closely with families and assist all year long with food and clothing, as well as emergency services. For many children, when they think of getting a gift for the holidays, they think of a beautiful park at South Mountain, candy canes and goody bags, and the Clauses pulling up in a brightly lit fire truck. This is made possible because there are many people in the Valley who still believe in the magic of giving and the knowledge that one person can make a difference. The Tallulah Project

It started with a community mosaic project called, The Tallulah Project. Funded initially by the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the project is designed to engage families in transforming the exterior walkways of our school. Once introduced, clay became a typical work area in our classrooms, extending and transforming learning inside our classrooms. It has become a remarkable teaching tool. So what is it about clay that makes it so inviting? Is it the supple and malleable texture? Is it the forgiveness of the art – allowing children and adults to easily smash it down and start over? Yes, and so much more.

From the start, our community agreed that we wanted to transform our adobe walls into something that reflected our desert community. Clearly, something happens to us as individuals when we enter into spaces that are beautiful. They cause us to stop and look. Our senses are awakened. We see the colors, the movement and hear the sound of the place. We are no longer just passing through the space; we are active participants. Although commercial buildings are economical and functional, they do not express all that our culture believes about itself. We should be alarmed when the characteristics of our school buildings have more in common with places of incarceration than places of learning. Art shows us that classrooms do not have to be white, dull boxes but rather a reflection of all that teach and learn in our community. When we provide interesting and beautiful spaces for children to learn, we are showing our children they are important to us. When we work together to create something beautiful, we strengthen relationships within our community. When we put art back into our environments and back into the curriculum, we nurture the inventiveness we desire to develop in all children. We have rendered a mosaic depicting the landscapes of Arizona and how they are transformed by water. A large tree greets families upon entering the school, each

Clay gives children an outlet to represent what is happening in their lives and builds conversational and storytelling skills between peers and adults. Critical Thinking – the medium of clay naturally causes children to approach their work with a mindset of problem solving. They observe, experi-

ment, and learn from error and repetition. Fine Motor – working the clay builds stronger hand muscles. The task of squeezing, pinching, poking and prodding develops young hands and fingers. As children work with clay, they pass through several stages of exploration. Teachers give the children time, often over many class periods, to explore and create using clay. Children use basic shapes such as balls and coils to create animals, people and objects in their world. As their experience grows they create more elaborate structures such as houses, people with arms and legs, animals and objects with greater detail. Children begin to focus on trying to make their creations look “real”. Teachers are careful to use descriptive comments about what they are observing such as: “I see you used balls to make the caterpillar. How did you get the balls to stick together?” “I see you made a house. What details could you add?” “I see you carefully smoothed the joints. This will help your sculpture last a long time.”

Children become aware of different techniques, imitating successful outcomes and revisiting their own creations by adding detail. Building Community

When people visit our school they are often surprised to learn that students, parent volunteers, teachers and students make the tiles. From the start of the project, we were not interested in bringing in a mosaic muralist to do all the work. On the contrary, our intention was to become students of the art and learn how to make the tiles ourselves. Tiles are made in the classrooms, the art studio and at Saturday family clay workshops. We have a parent committee that provides assistance at the workshops, glazing and placing the tiles on the walls. We encourage families to “Leave their mark on the walls”. As adults model respect for others, children learn the ways of kindness, consideration and harmony. When teachers listen carefully and ask open-ended questions, children learn that what they think and what they want is important to others. Children learn to share

their thoughts and ideas. With real experiences, children learn to be resourceful in solving problems. They learn to be respectful of tools and materials. Given the opportunity to revisit their work, children learn to strive for quality. When we direct our energy into creating something beautiful together as a community – we find common ground.

Yes, we ladies enjoy the feminine, Victorian touches that somehow have been lost over the years. Fortunately, Gemmill has created a wonderful atmosphere of all the things she loves and shares them with us so we can spend some time and enjoy a relaxing, nostalgic break. That’s exactly what I did the other day. I stopped in and enjoyed a delicious scone with Devon cream flown in from England, lemon curd, strawberry preserves and a pot of tea. I learned that you spread the thick Devon cream on first, followed by the lemon curd and topped with a dab of preserve. The scone was large and

ecently, a young woman came into our salon to look at her fur coat. While she was in the store, we started chatting. She was talking about how much she loved fur, and how much most of the women her age love them too, but feel badly about admitting that they enjoy wearing their garments. The client revealed during our conversation that she had been at a charity event at an outdoor venue in Phoenix in January of 2013. In her words, “there were so many women wearing furs, but they all made excuses about why it was okay to wear their particular garment---they weren’t doing anything wrong--it belonged to their grandmother—they never bought one new, etc., etc., etc.”. This young gal could not understand how intelligent adult women could feel like they had to apologize for exercising their right to wear whatever makes them feel comfortable, glamorous, fashionable and good about themselves. As I think about the conversation, it’s a bit surprising to me that with all we have tried to do as a society in order empower women, many still feel like they can’t stand up for themselves when it comes to defending personal choices. Even more concerning is that women feel as if they have to justify their choices to anyone. It goes without saying that a vast majority of men would never put up with someone intimidating them about anything, let alone about their choice of clothing. The conversation inspired me to write this article about the upside of wearing fur. Maybe some of the very women who are not 40 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | December 2013

wearing their garments because they don’t want to “feel like they have to explain themselves” will realize that by wearing a natural product, they are supporting one of the most important causes of our time—preserving our environment. FUR IS GREEN. Real fur is an organic material. Fake fur and any other synthetic fabrics are made from petroleum products. These products do not break down easily and remain in landfills for centuries. Just like anything natural, fur products are biodegradable and eventually return to the earth. They will not pile up in landfills, exacerbating our ecological and environmental problem of waste building. FUR PROCESSING IS EARTH FRIENDLY. The main chemicals used to “dress” furs are table salt, water, alum salts, soda ash, sawdust, cornstarch, lanolin and other natural ingredients. Small quantities of formaldehyde can be used to protect fur follicles during dressing or dying and gentle acids such as acetic acid (better known as vinegar) are also used. Fur “dressing” and coloring are relatively mild processes as they must be in order to preserve the fur and maintain the natural beauty of the product. And, since most furs are available in an extraordinary array of natural colors, only a small portion of them are dyed. FUR IS A RENEWABLE, SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE.

Worldwide, the fur industry uses only part of what nature produces each year. The industry does this so that wildlife populations are not depleted and damage is not done to the natural habitat that sustains them. Generally, plants and animals produce more offspring than the land can support to maturity. Like other species, we live by making use of part of the surplus that nature creates. Conservationists define this use as “sustain-

able use” of renewable resources. Synthetics, as mentioned above, are made from the non-renewable resource petroleum. This is not consistent with the sustainable use of our environment. Production, transportation and disposal of this chemical can cause environmental problems. All furs used by the fur industry are abundant. Absolutely no endangered species are used by the fur trade. One of the goals of the fur trade is to help to maintain long-term ecological balance and to support wildlife management. Doing so also helps to ensure the industry’s future. FUR IS DURABLE AND RECYCLABLE. Well-caredfor-fur garments are long lasting and hardy. Furs are one of the few clothing items that are often passed down thru multiple generations. Most of the time, there are sentimental meaning and memories associated with a fur. Unlike most other textiles, furs can be remodeled and updated. Fur restyling is a very big part of business. Not only can a fur be made into another outerwear garment, but it can be repurposed to make handbags, pillows, keepsake teddy bears and many types of home accessories and gift items.
