new year has come and I am looking forward to what lies ahead. A new year provides so many opportunities to dream bigger than you ever have before, reach new goals, make new friends, and get involved in your community. In our January issue we are going to focus on golf and senior citizens. Scottsdale lends such a hand to our seniors as well as shining great light on the game of golf. Every year towards the end of January and beginning of February, Scottsdale’s TPC golf course hosts the annual Waste Management Phoenix Open. Go check out the 16th hole, as fans cheer on their favorite players in the stands that surround the par three. The Bird’s Nest this year will host American rock band O.A.R as well as country music star Jake Owen. This is a great event that the entire family can enjoy. Speaking of the WM Phoenix Open, head on over to our Family Spotlight where you can read about one of the players. Kevin Streelman and his wife Courtney open up about life on the PGA Tour. From stresses to highlights, these two have figured out how to roll with the punches. And with their first little one on the way, there is only a bright future for the Streelman family. A feature in this month’s issue highlights the Via Linda Senior Center. This is a place where all seniors in the area can go for a night out. From ballroom dancing, to art classes, social games, a billiard room, and more, Via Linda Senior Center is sure to help all seniors get connected and build relationships. With more than 500,000 visitors annually, it’s one of the busiest facilities in the community. Village Inn this year is celebrating National Pie Day. Scottsdale Resident Launches Girls on the Run One Scottsdale resident is going above and beyond to give back to the

Scottsdale community. Babette Nolton launched a 12-week program, called Girls on the Run®, in the Scottsdale community. “I wanted to bring Girls on the Run to Scottsdale because it is such an empowering and life changing program for young girls,” says Nolton. “The curriculum teaches important life lessons and inspires the girls in ways they normally wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience in their daily life.” Girls on the Run is a national nonprofit organization that provides pre-adolescent girls with the necessary tools to embrace their individual strengths as they enter middle and high school and inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident woman. Nolton, along with a handful of assistant coaches, leads the 12-week program that includes life lessons such as, “it’s ok to choose our friends,” “standing up to peer pressure,” “positive self talk and why I do it” and “valu-

ing what’s really important.” Nolton says that lessons about inner beauty, positive self-esteem and the importance of good communication skills are things we can all benefit from.” Volunteers lead Girls on the Run groups throughout Maricopa and Pinal County, but there wasn’t a site in Scottsdale, so Nolton stepped up to the plate and become a coach for the program, recruiting a handful of her friends along the way. She says it’s the most rewarding experience of her life because young girls are so impressionable and adolescence is a hard age for many of them, so it is rewarding to watch the girls grow in such a positive way as they get stronger emotionally, mentally and physically. The 12-week program ends with a 5K run for all Girls on the Run participants. The 5K was held on Saturday, November 23 at Kiwanis Park. s the boomers and their parents age, more and more family members are managing eldercare responsibilities. The emotional, physical and financial demands of caring for aging parents can be extensive. What’s more, the healthcare needs of aging parents can become overwhelmingly expensive — and may include costs that affect their family members in ways that aren’t immediately apparent. Healthcare and finances aren’t easy topics for many families to broach. In fact, research from the Money Across Generations IISM study shows that 36 percent of boomers’ parents feel that healthcare discussions with their family members are likely or very likely to create tension or spark an argument. Having a long-term road map and a savings plan in place can help you care for your parents in the way they desire while enabling you to continue working towards your financial goals. This can be helpful in making informed short-term decisions, especially when there are unexpected expenses and emotions involved.

To get started: Talk about finances now. While it may be uncomfortable for your parents to discuss their finances with you, it’s essential that you are familiar with their financial strategy and resources. This includes knowing what type of medical, disability and long-term care insurance they have and what those policies cover. Use this information – along with if and how much you’re willing to help from your own funds – to evaluate which healthcare options are realistically within reach when medical needs arise. Create a contact list. Medical emergencies and sudden changes in a person’s health can happen as parents age. Because you may eventually need access to your parents’ bank accounts and other financial resources on short notice, make sure they’ve compiled a list of account numbers, computer login names and passwords, and the names, addresses and phone numbers of the professionals they work with. In addition to knowing the location of the list, you’ll also need to know the location of important financial and legal documents and lockbox keys. Identify current healthcare costs and needs. Become familiar with the medical and pharmaceutical costs that your parent(s) currently incur and determine if there are ways to reduce these expenses. For example, you or your parents may consider moving from a name brand to a generic prescription or, instead of filling prescriptions at your local pharmacy, ordering a long-term supply from a mail-order provider. Build a support network. Talk with siblings or other family members, neighbors and industry professionals to determine who can help you care for your aging parents — and in what capacity and at what cost. Proactively establishing a support network can help you avoid a strain on your time and energy down the road.

Anticipate future lifestyle changes and challenges. Even if they aren’t yet

needed, explore the costs of in-home, senior apartment, assisted living and memory care housing and services, as well as the costs of having a parent live with you. This includes determining whether your home would need to be modified to provide additional space or comforts, such as wheelchair access. Understanding these costs ahead of time can help you identify what you and your parents can afford and will give you time to consider the pros and cons of each option.

Become familiar with assistance programs. Your parents may qualify for government programs, supplements or services. Visit the government hosted benefits site — GovBenefits.gov — for information. Also, your county or city has a federally-mandated Area Agency on Aging staffed by professionals who can provide you with information about elder programs and services in your area. Keep your retirement goals in mind.

Continue to manage your budget and save for your future. Be mindful that leaving the workforce even temporarily, may seem tempting — and in some cases may be necessary — but exiting and re-entering affects your immediate income and can impact your ability to maintain your earning power. What’s more, it can impact your ability to take advantage of an employer-sponsored retirement plan. Consider these factors when you evaluate the total costs of any option. Know your rights at work. The Federal Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) allows covered employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to provide care for a family member with a serious health condition.2 If you are caring for a parent, inform your Human Resources department about your situation to take advantage of this legal protection, if relevant, and create a workable plan within your company’s policies.

hen Michelle Bravo, 43, enlisted in the Army, it wasn’t until she returned home from her first deployment to Kuwait in 2001 that she truly felt a sense of patriotism. Bravo realized her role in the Army was much bigger than she ever expected it to be. A soldier for more than 20 years, Bravo has mastered the act of selfless service. This past Veteran’s Day, Bravo launched i Rock the Boots, a new clothing line for female veterans that embraces the femininity of every woman. A portion of all proceeds benefits female veterans who are in transition or homeless, and those dealing with trauma or abuse. She hopes her site can also serve as a support system and resource for military women across the globe.

A Pentagon spokesperson?. “There’s an understanding between women in the military,” says Bravo. “You have to find a balance between being a female and a soldier. Femininity is now being celebrated instead of viewed as sign of weakness.” While there are only a small percentage of females in combat, about 3 percent of women are assigned to the front line units and have served in war zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Carley Jones, a Marine since 2011, describes what it’s like. “The friends I’ve made in the Marine Corps are more like brothers and sisters to me,” she says. “Our bond is like no other because we all go through the same difficulties and good times together. We depend on each other and we have been through so much together it kind of just happens.” An honorable military career

By the numbers

Of the approximately 1.4 million active-duty military, more than 200,000 are women. Females account for nearly 15 percent and are 18 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | January 2014

Bravo wasn’t your typical military recruit. She didn’t come from a military family. After hearing a friend talk about the travel experiences she experienced while in the military, Bravo was intrigued

by military life. “I was a girly girl,” says Bravo. “I wasn’t very athletic and wasn’t into sports. I chose the Army because it seemed to be the perfect fit for me. I wanted something that challenged me, was meaningful, and gave me a sense of purpose and an opportunity to give back.” After a six year enlistment, Bravo attended college at University of Arizona where she enrolled in the Army ROTC program, and received a bachelor’s in business management. Upon graduation in 1999, she became a commissioned officer. During her service, Bravo deployed three times, including two tours to Kuwait and one to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. She also served as an assignment officer in Washington D.C. and Fort Knox, Ky., where she was promoted to Major before coming to Arizona State University’s Department of Military Science as an executive officer in 2011. The time to give back is now

Even though her current assignment is only 20 minutes away from her home in Chandler, Bravo still puts in long hours, often consisting of 12- to 15-hour days; She typically begins with daily physical training at 6 a.m. There are evening events, temporary duty trips and training weekends, which take away time from husband, Ric, and two-year-old son, Isaiah. “It’s a constant inner struggle,” Bravo said. “I’m fortunate because I have an amazing support system. I focus on giving my all to my family when I am with them and to my job when I am at work.” But not all military moms are able to come home every night. Some are deployed overseas for several months at a time. A 2006 study from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston reported that after Operation Desert Storm and Operation Desert Shield, women with children reported a higher rate of emotional health problems after deployment than women without children, including anxiety and difficulty readjusting after deployment. Children also reported an increase in emotional stress during their parent’s absence.

e is currently ranked in the top 50 in the world and finished in the top 30 on tour last year. He won his first tournament last year at the Tampa Bay Championship, finished 2nd in the Player’s Championship, and took 3rd at the RBC Heritage. After 7 years on the PGA tour, Kevin Streelman is only getting more successful in his golf career. Between the constant traveling, making time to spend with his wife, and preparing for a new baby on the way, Kevin has a full plate. But, he wouldn’t change a single thing. Kevin started playing golf at a very early age. Slightly influenced by his parents, who are huge golf lovers themselves, Kevin was a natural. Although he liked the sport, golf didn’t become serious for Kevin until his junior year in high school when he decided to quit tennis and basketball to focus more on his golf game. After graduating from Duke University in 2001, Kevin went straight into a professional career. Between 2001 and 2007, Kevin played

in what’s called the mini tours. During this time, he drove all over the country and worked odd jobs to pay for his entry fees. In 2007, Kevin received his PGA tour card through qualifying school and has been on tour ever since. His biggest fan and supporter is his wife. Courtney received her undergrad at ASU and has lived in Arizona ever since. Once she and Kevin met, they were inseparable. The Streelman family is about to grow. “I’m pregnant with our first child, a baby girl, and she is due Feb 3--interestingly enough, the day after the Waste Management Open,” Courtney says. Now Kevin will have two cheerleaders on the golf course. It is expected with such a busy lifestyle that times aren’t always easy. “Golf and the suitcase lifestyle can definitely bring challenges, but honestly, our close relationship makes those challenges that

much easier,” Courtney shares. “We try to keep the Lord at the center of our marriage, relationships, and decisions, and He takes care of the rest. There is a lot of peace in allowing Him to be in control. We may not always be perfect at that, but we try our best.” With the weekly travel and different hotel stays, these two together handle the pressure. Kevin and Courtney love to do normal, everyday activities when they have time away from the world of golf. They relish being at home and catching up with friends on weeks when Kevin isn’t playing. They like sports and music as well. “We love music and like to attend concerts, we love sports-especially football, so we enjoy a lot of couch watching when we get a few days of rest at home, and occasionally we attend live sporting events,” says Courtney. “Our favorite teams are University of Alabama, the Chicago Bears and the Arizona Cardinals. We are also huge Duke basketball fans.” And when it comes to being at home in Scottsdale, the Streelman’s enjoy going out to dinner at some of their favorite places including Mastro’s, Cowboy Ciao, Mojo and Local Bistro. This year in the 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open, Kevin intends to make an appearance unless his baby girl has other plans. Regardless of whether he plays this year in Scottsdale or not, Kevin and Courtney live a life that they wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. “I think the reward is that Kevin is able to pursue his passion and make a living at it,” says Courtney. “It’s such a blessing to be able to do what you love. Of course it’s rewarding to see him experience success when it comes (in golf it can be few and far between, and sometimes nonexistent), but I think it’s most rewarding for him to have a positive impact on other people’s lives. We have developed friendships and met so many great people-it’s neat to see where it takes you, but also amazing to give back.”

ost Americans are well acquainted with delicious dessert pies and include them as a regular staple at holiday meals and family gatherings. Yet, few are familiar with the long and rich history of how this famous comfort food secured its place in American culture. Although the phrase “there is nothing more American than apple pie” is widely known, pies were originally adapted from a traditional Greek and Roman dish. A grass-like plan called a reed acted as a crust that held meat fillings, though, the reeds were not typically eaten. It wasn’t until the 14th Century that the word “pie” became popular, and the crust became known as ‘coffyns’ by the English. It was also the English who introduced fruit pies to the world, having originally called the desserts ‘pasties.’ The Pilgrims brought these savory English pie recipes across the ocean during their voyage to the New World in the 1600’s. It only took a couple hundred years in the American homeland for the English name ‘coffyn’ to eventually change to the American term ‘coffin,’ then finally ‘crust’ around the time of the American Revolution. The first American sweet pies with edible crusts emerged in the 1800’s; the same sweet, tangy, irresistible pies embraced today.

f you are like most Americans, you see the beginning of a new year as an opportunity for a new start. And, for most of us, getting in shape usually is on top of our list of New Year resolutions. But, healthy eating isn’t always convenient or accessible and can be confusing at times. Well, I am happy to introduce you to a new restaurant that makes eating healthy fun and tasty. Located off the 101 and Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd., Grabbagreen made its debut in August of 2013 and its popularity instantly grew.

A Healthy Alternative to Fast Food

Owners Kelley Bird, who has three boys, and Keely Newman, who has twin girls, have been best friends since high school. They wanted to be able to take their children out to eat where they knew they would have healthy, tasty meals that would be quick, easy and fun. Thus the concept of Grabbagreen was born using many of their own recipes. On my visit, I sat down with General Manager Mandie Lowran who quickly introduced me to a few of the 16 juices that are fresh squeezed and bottled every morning and perfect to grab and go. It’s like getting a meal or salad in a bottle. I tasted one called “Power” which is a combination of fresh spinach, kale, apple and lemon and was surprised how good it was. The healthy attributes of this drink are that it lowers blood pressure, boasts hemoglobin, reduces lethargy and fights infection. Another was labeled “Wellness” made with organic carrots, strawberries, apple and lemon and increases your energy, relieves heartburn, supports the immune system and reduces inflammation. some of the others. Lowran is excited about how the concept has caught on and all the new people stopping in to try their healthy drinks or meals. A graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Culinary College who has worked 12 years in the restaurant industry, she became a testimony that healthy eating works. “I never thought I’d be one of those people who says vegetables saved my life, but that is exactly what happened,” explains Lowran. Having gotten very ill and unable to work, Lowran was desperate to try anything to regain her health. As she changed her diet to one of healthy choices, she recovered and hasn’t looked back. She is very passionate about good eating and loves to help others make healthy choices. “I advise new customers to give everything a chance by trying a few things on the menu,” says Lowran. She enjoys seeing the pleasant reaction to how good healthy eating can be. More Than a Juice Bar

You can even create your own meal by choosing an organic grain, a protein (chicken, salmon, shrimp, steak or tofu), add a choice of three vegetables and nuts, and then finish it with a low-fat sauce from the 10 available. Balancing Family & Passion A Stay-At-Home Mom Finds a Clever Way to Put her Professional Talents to Good Use Article by Michelle Guerrero

fter getting her two young sons dressed, fed and off to school, and getting her daughter ready for the babysitter, Sasha Graham grabs her boots and work gloves and sets off to Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship. With a pitchfork and bucket in hand, she digs in. She starts by cleaning and bedding the stalls, then moves on to bleaching and filling water buckets, and tops off her morning with a leaf-blower in hand to whisk away loose hay that may have blown out of the stalls. Graham has been volunteering her time for the last year and a half for Camelot, a Scottsdale based nonprofit organization that teaches horsemanship to children and adults who have physical disabilities. Volunteering offers her the flexibility to remain a stayat-home-mom, while providing her with the challenges and stimulation of having a job. She grew up with horses in Oregon, but her career, first as a television writer and producer, and later as a film publicist for The Walt Disney Studios, took her far from the ranch. Some days Graham’s tool of choice is a pitchfork, while other days it’s a computer. She is instrumental in many of Camelot’s fundraising events and has even spearheaded a few of her own. Her latest adventure is creating “Team Camelot” to participate in the Arizona Disabled Sports’ 5th Annual Run, Walk and Roll, to help raise funding and awareness for the program. People who sign up to be part of the team will have the opportunity to support two fantastic organizations. Race registration funds will benefit Arizona Disabled Sports. After registering, supporters are asked to contact Graham so she can provide them with a link to a page on GoFundMe.com to send to their family and friends. The GoFundMe page will give racers the opportunity to solicit donations. These donations will go directly to Camelot. “The race is 3.1 miles, a great distance for athletes, non-athletes, kids and adults. We are excited to welcome scouting troops, families, runners, walkers and rollers,” says Graham. “Anyone who wants to be part of Team Camelot and do good for their community in an incredible, tangible way.”

Graham was inspired to create this opportunity after she signed up for her first half-marathon and decided to open a GoFundMe page to try to drum up support for Camelot. It was an overwhelming success; she raised nearly a $1,000 more than her goal. That’s when she decided she wanted to offer the same experience to others with hopes to bring in more people to Camelot’s Round Table. “I have been training for the half-marathon for months and it has given me a lot of time to reflect on just how much good there is in the world, and how incredibly generous people are,” says Graham. “The fact that most of the people who donated to Camelot in honor of the race had never even set foot on the ranch, yet were willing to contribute, speaks volumes.” Graham is a shining example of one of many Camelot volunteers that keep this grassroots organization thriving during difficult economic times. Camelot depends on strong community support, creative fundraising and people like Graham who do whatever it takes to better the lives of others. “There is a freedom and satisfaction that comes with volunteering for an organization you believe in that doesn’t necessarily exist with other jobs. Volunteers are free to move on at any time, so when you’re working with volunteers, you know that the people you’re working with want to be there. The power of this experience is extraordinary,” says Graham. They began their lesson with a spontaneous wheelchair race through the tack room, received sloppy kisses from resident therapy dog Lily, then giggled, chortled and teased their way through an “egg-in-spoon” race on horseback. “The barn echoed with their joyful laughter and it made my heart swell to be a part of something so wonderful. Here were two smart, handsome, funny boys whose paths probably never would have crossed had it not been for Camelot. Biggest Loser of 2013 Scottsdale Winner Shares His Journey Article Moriah Schowengerdt

t the end of 2013, several Scottsdale residents decided that they needed to accomplish the “new years resolution” that they had made to themselves in January. With the help of Pulse Fitness, these contestants were able to break bad habits, accomplish their goals, and begin their journey to a happy, healthy life. Pulse Fitness is a small studio gym located at Pima and Legacy, just north of the 101 freeway. Owner Tim Lyons has a vision to see people be fit for life through metabolic training. Tim has hired some of the best trainers in the industry who are dedicated to fitness and helping others reach their goals. Pulse Fitness is second to none when it comes to equipment, trainers, and fitness programs that will get you to the next level. Boot camps, personal training, and foundations classes are just a few of the options that Tim and his team provide. For the Biggest Loser contestants of 2013, boot camps were the way to go. The contestants started their journey by getting weighed in, measured, and fitted for a boot camp and meal plan schedule that would prove to be a challenge. Some of the rules that these contestants had to follow included a minimum of 4 boot camps a week and a mandatory weigh-in half way through the program. Boot camps were chosen as the method of exercise for these contestants because of the kind of high-intensity workout they offer. Contestants were pushed to their limits as they completed boot camp after boot camp. And although their bodies may have started getting used to the “boot camp beating,” it doesn’t mean they got easier. Boot camps have proven to be tough for even the fittest of athletes. After 52 days of this strict and rigorous program, a winner was revealed. Matt Kelly is 43 years old. He is married to his wife Tricia and they have an 8-year-old son. Matt graduated from Boston College in 1993 and quickly moved with Tricia to Arizona to escape the New England weather. “After graduating college and moving to Arizona, I started to gain weight over time. I had seen their biggest loser and boot camp opportunities before and had always wanted to try it but unfortunately, the timing had never worked out for my schedule,” says Matt. Despite his struggle with weight gain, Matt has always enjoyed living an active lifestyle. ter sports. The Kelly family loves to travel and experience different adventures. When Matt started to gain weight, he was afraid that there would come a point in his life when he could no longer do those activities that he loved. Like so many others, Matt had tried several different diet fads that never worked. It was fail after fail at trying to reach a goal that seemed to be impossible. “With the program that Pulse Fitness has to offer, you can get extreme results in a very short period of time,” says Matt. “And the Pulse Fitness staff is extremely knowledgeable and they really want to help you succeed. I feel that if you give their program an honest effort, you have no other option then to succeed.” During the Biggest Loser contest Matt lost a total of 34 pounds and gained muscle. The program teaches an amazing lesson on how to balance your diet, everyday life, and gives you metabolic workouts to maximize your results. Now that Matt has accomplished his first goal at through the help of Pulse Fitness, he hopes to continue his healthy lifestyle, eating habits, and weekly exercise program. One of his greatest accomplishments during the program was finishing a 30-mile hike through Havasupai Fall. “I know that if I had attended and competed in the program at Pulse Fitness, it would have been beyond my ability,” he says. As winner of the Biggest Loser, Matt received a gift card to Scottsdale Jean Co. located in Gainey Village for a new, stylish outfit. He also received a gift card to Par Exsalonce in DC Ranch Marketplace where he can go to get a new haircut. n just a few weeks the eyes of the golf world will once again fall upon the north metro area as the PGA Tour makes it annual stop at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) Scottsdale for The Waste Management Phoenix Open. For nearly eighty years the Phoenix Open has been a staple on the calendar of the PGA, and a lot has changed since Robert W. Goldwater (Barry’s younger brother) founded the tournament back in 1932. A passionate golfer, Goldwater not only had to sell tickets and recruit volunteers in those early years, but could also be seen preparing the course at the Phoenix Country Club. In 1955 the Phoenix Open began alternating its hosting responsibilities with the Arizona Country Club, before once again becoming the tournament’s exclusive home in 1975. Ralph Guldahl, a popular early 20th Century golfer who would end his career with three major championships, won that inaugural tournament, then called the Arizona Open. He would pocket a cool $600 for his efforts, which pales in comparison to the $1.1 million taken home by last year’s winner and ASU Alum Phil Mickelson. That win was Mickleson’s third Phoenix Open, placing him in a three-way tie for the most ever. His score of 256 (-28) also tied him with Mark Calcavecchia with the best four-day score in the history of the event.

The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale would claim the event on a permanent basis in 1987, where it has been constantly voted a favorite by competing golfers and a constant highlight for golf fans across the region and beyond. “We have attended each of the last five years,” says John Frazier, a resident of Albuquerque who makes the trip with a loyal group of golf buddies. “We come out early on that Monday and spend three days golfing around town before the tournament even begins. But come Thursday afternoon it’s all about hanging out at the Open, eating, drinking, and having a great time.” Frazier and his friends are not alone in their enjoyment of the Valley in early February, as season after season the Phoenix Open sets itself high above the rest of the PGA events as the most attended event all year. Attendance over the course of the four days averages around a half-million. On the Saturday of 2013, a single-day record was set, with 179,022 converging on Scottsdale to take in a day following the world’s best golfers. Behind the scenes, the tournament also provides a charitable focal point for one of Phoenix’s oldest and proudest civic organizations. When the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce decided it needed a special events committee in 1937, a young Robert Goldwater was among the early young professionals selected for membership.

The group would become known as the Thunderbirds, and with new member Goldwater already the established tournament chairman, their link with the Phoenix Open was officially forged. Today, Thunderbird membership resides around 300 members, all of who have a love of sports equal only to their dedication for improving their community. Over the years they have been able to donate more than $86.1 million of Phoenix Open proceeds to organizations such as the Special Olympics, Boys and Girls Clubs, and local agencies of the United Way. Now just a single-year term, the chairmanship for 2014 is held by Tom King, now in this his eighth year as a Thunderbirds member. “It’s a full-time job,” says King, whose duties include having the final say on every tournament host detail. “You work all year long on the event, and every year you try to add your own element to it to make it bigger and different.” Among the tasks on King’s agenda are the details of the Coors Light Birds Nest, which remains one of the most distinctive events of the whole week. Held each year just outside the main entrance to the tournament, the Birds Nest becomes Scottsdale’s hottest spot for nightlife during tournament week, as headline acts take the stage for a night of high-octane, 21-and-over rock ‘n roll entertainment.

American rock band O.A.R will open up the 2014 edition of the Bird’s Nest on Wednesday, January 29, followed by country music star Jake Owen on Thursday. Legendary alternative rockers Weezer will headline Friday, and hometown cover band Metalhead will conclude the festivities in front of what is traditionally a soldout crowd on Saturday night. From the first off the tee Thursday morning to the roar of the crowd Sunday afternoon as a new champion is crowned, the stage is set for this year’s edition of the Phoenix Open to add its own memorable chapter to the storied history of the event. And Chairman King looks no farther back than last year to what a perfect ending to his tenure would be. “Seeing Phil Mickelson going wire-to-wire to win it, especially being a local favorite and ASU guy, that was awesome,” he says. “This year I would love to see a repeat performance. For me, that would be ideal.” The 79th Waste Management Phoenix Open is slated from January 30 to February 2. he Via Linda Senior Center (VLSC) is a fantastic place in Scottsdale where fun activities, classes, meetings and social events are waiting for seniors in the area. “More than 500,000 people visit our facility annually for programs, classes and special events, making it one of the busiest facilities in our community,” says Nick Molinari with the City of Scottsdale Senior Services. Voters authorized the VLSC in the 1989 Bond Election and it officially opened in 1995. In 2000, the center expanded, adding more space, classrooms and activities. Now the facility is 20,000 square feet. It includes room for a dedicated art room, fitness center, computer lab, library, billiards room and more. 36 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | January 2014

Many events enliven VLSC all year long. “Bridge is an incredibly popular activity at our facility, and offerings range from informal social games to sanctioned opportunities,” explains Nick. “We have staff dedicated to wellness and social services, and they coordinate support groups for those with Alzheimer’s, loss of vision, grief and loss, and other issues our older adult community might experience.” VLSC also partners with Fred Astaire Dance Studio to host a monthly ballroom dance with live music and dancing lessons so everyone can participate. Ten annual events enrich lives and offer social opportunities. Onsite, VLSC hosts a Holiday Art Show and a Spring Barbeque, as well as events for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Thanksgiving. Scottsdale Senior Services, also including Granite Reef Senior Center, also puts on two citywide events each year. One of them is the “All Things Senior” Expo and Tradeshow, held in February at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. “The goal of the event is to bring together a comprehensive collection of exhibitors who provide services, programs and products to older adults,” says Nick. “Our expo has become an extremely popular event, with over 110 exhibitors and 3,000 attendees annually.” The Entertainment Extravaganza is by far the signature event of

the year. Hosted by Scottsdale Senior Services, the variety show is also held at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. “Local seniors, many of whom take classes or participate in activities at our senior centers, perform under the lights in a show that regularly reaches capacity,” says Nick. “Singers, dancers, comedians and everyone in between excite the crowd.” Some events need to be registered for online or by calling VLSC. Some of the other perks of participating in VLSC classes and programs include better health, relaxation, building relationships and connecting to their community. “Many of our seniors take up hobbies, like painting, that they have been interested in their entire life, but have never had the time to do,” says Nick. “It is great to see our older adult community engaged with their peers and enjoying their free time.” Regulars at VLSC become part of the family there. The strong sense of community exists because so many participate frequently. Take Leo for instance. Leo is a senior citizen who has been a regular attendee at the Scottsdale Senior Centers for 20 years. He is now 97 years old. He loves billiards and finds himself at home and in good company while he is there. And there are many others who are just like him. VLSC offers any senior a place to get involved, be a part of a community and build relationships that will last.

ith its world-class courses and complimentary world-class climate, Phoenix long ago established itself as a premiere destination for golfers from across the globe. Lesser known, perhaps, is the fact that the city is home to the only golf club manufacturer in the United States as well: Karsten Manufacturing, or more commonly known in golfing circles as PING. The Karsten Manufacturing Corporation (KMC) is named for Karsten Solheim, who constructed his first golf club in the garage of his own home in Redwood City, Calif., in 1959. After relocating to Phoenix two years later, demand for that original club, a putter, would keep Karsten busy. What had started as a hobby consumed more and more of his time. Finally in 1967 Karsten decided to quit his day job as an engineer at General Electric and focus on developing his new company. He named his company PING, which represents the sweet sound that a golf ball makes as it strikes the face of one of his clubs. That same year he decided to move out of his garage in into a factory setting, and KMC was officially born. Though Karsten would pass away in 2000, the company remains under the guidance of the Solheim family as his sons have continued to manage the business. Today, PING has positioned itself among the premiere brands of golf equipment worldwide, and KMC is regarded as a trendsetter of club manufacturing with its focus on improving a player’s game through equipment technology. A tour of the manufacturing facility begins with a short presentation introducing the founder and how his passion for constructing a better golf club would lead him to creating KMC. After a video introduction to the rest of the Solheim family and one on golf club design, 42 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | January 2014

visitors are ready to see the factory. Since the actual forging of PING club heads is done off-site (mainly at a foundry in southwest Phoenix), the tour offers a first-hand glimpse of the actual assembly process. Visitors go straight to the factory floor, immersed in the hustle and bustle of employees hand-crafting every golf club. One of the most notable takeaways is the sheer volume of customization. Though PING ships out its fair share of demo clubs and sets, most of their clubs are based on orders from customers far and wide. Because a golfer’s swing is as unique as their personality, each club must be shaped, balanced, and bent to the individual specifications of each order. The one glaring omission is the fabled “Gold Putter Vault.” In a quest to create a unique way to reward golfers using his company’s clubs for winning a tournament, Karsten began creating two gold-plated (or in the case of major tournament champions, solid gold) replicas of the winning putter. After engraving both with the professional’s name and the tournament won, one of the clubs is presented to the victorious golfer, while the other is stowed away in the company “vault.” Widely referred to as the Fort Knox of golf, today the vault is home to more than 2,500 golden putters, with new ones being added almost weekly. Tours are offered every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, except for holidays. No children under 9 years old are permitted. Each 1.5hour tour begins at 9 a.m. Reservations are required; tours do sell out, often weeks in advance, during the peak months of October through April. et’s be honest, finding a job these days can be a lot of work. Granted, over the last few years the over-45 group have found themselves searching for jobs due to companies downsizing or closing. It isn’t unusual to hear about people being out of work for a lengthy period and taking part-time positions as they continue their search. Yes, it can be challenging, but it is possible to find new, exciting opportunities and broaden your network of quality contacts. Jessica Pierce found herself in such a situation back in May of 2009. Realizing she wasn’t alone and having been in the job staffing industry, she called her church and offered to help people with their resumes. Within three months attendance at her meetings grew from 25 to 250. Yes, there definitely was a need. Pierce continued holding meeting to help others in their job search. She reached out to companies to find out who was hiring and found others who wanted to volunteer their time helping. This was the beginning of what is now a non-profit 5013c company called Career Connectors. Their Mission Statement is connecting professionals in career transition with hiring companies and quality resources. Real careers – real connections

Late last year, Career Connectors started holding monthly meetings at the Highlands Church in North Scottsdale. Geared to helping those in career transition, Career Connectors is structured so that speakers from three hiring companies in the Valley come and talk about their company and positions available. Other speakers also discuss relevant topics that will assist in a job search. After, resume writers, LinkedIn coaches and career coaches are all available to answer questions. All this is available at no cost – even a professional photographer is available to take head shots for your LinkedIn account. “We provide all the tools you need in one location at one morning meeting and you’ll walk away with connections, resources and knowing you are not alone,” says Pierce. 44 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | January 2014

It’s all about building relationships

Today you have to move away from sitting at your computer and start building contacts. Everyone you meet whether at a network meeting, the gym, church or your child’s soccer game are all key people to connect with during your search. You can make important contacts just by introducing yourself and then listen to their story so you may be able to assist them. The old saying “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine” works. Once you’ve built a relationship, the more likely that person will remember you and what you’re looking for when they hear of something. The “who do you know” question is not only important but also works. In summary,
