Editor's Letter
Here Comes the Bride.
T
o me, there isn’t anything more exciting to celebrate in this life than a wedding. To marry the person you will spend the rest of your life with, the vows you speak over one another... it’s such a special moment where promises and hope collide.
The Clayton on the Park provides a beautiful venue for that very purpose. The Frenkel's are living out their dream. This modern place lives up to their motto of "Transcend Tradition." At The Clayton on the Park, brides truly get their fairy tale wedding. In this issue, Suki Jandu, the owner of Paradise Valley Florist, talks about the joy she feels when she makes people happy through beautiful floral arrangements. She's truly got a gift that brings light to events, people's homes, and more. The flowers she uses are her way of making this world just a little bit better. One organization in particular has gotten to experience Suki's generosity in abundance. If you are dreaming of a breath-taking Southwest wedding, the feature will give you some ideas to make all of your wedding hopes and wishes come true. From a variety of venues, bakers, florists and more to choose from, your Southwest wedding will come together quickly and with class and ease. When it comes to planning a wedding, most grooms would agree that budget is definitely at the top of their list. With all that’s involved, it is important to know how to make decisions about where to spend your money. We have some great tips for making wise financial choices when it comes to choosing a photographer. Though it may seem like something to scrimp on, photographs are the only tangible things you have left when your wedding day is over. With all the considerations of planning a wedding -- the venue, the dress, the floral arrangements, the photographer, and everything in between -- making sure everything is perfect is easier said than done. My only advice to all the brides out there is… Breath. Everything turns out exactly as it should. Plus, I always say that if everything goes too perfectly, the memories just won't be as fun. Most importantly, from your wedding day on, always put your spouse before yourself, and pray together. I have found that with these two things, my husband and I as a couple are unstoppable.

Around Town Boys and Girls of Metro Phoenix Hosts "The Big Event" Enjoy delicious food, live entertainment, tasty beverages and more…all for a great cause. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix’s Connect volunteer group will host its sixth annual “The Big Event” on Saturday, May 2, at 5:30 p.m. This annual fundraising event, which is sponsored by Inventure Foods, is a Valley favorite and is attended year after year by nearly 500 people. The festive, outdoor event will be held this year at the Museum at Papago Park. It will include tasting stations featuring delectable dishes from some of the valley’s more popular restaurants, specialty adult beverages, local entertainment and more than 200 live and silent auction items. Last year, Connect raised nearly $100,000 through “The Big Event” to support Boys & Girls Clubs programs throughout Phoenix and the West Valley that ensure that kids have a safe place to go after school where they can reach their potential. Tickets are $125 per person in advance and $150 per person at the door. Tickets can be purchased online at bgcmp.org, with all proceeds benefitting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix.
City of Scottsdale Partners with Nextdoor The City of Scottsdale has decided to partner with Nextdoor, the private social network for neighborhoods, to improve citywide and neighbor-to-neighbor communications. With the arrangement, Scottsdale residents can create private neighborhood websites to share information, including neighborhood public safety issues, community events and activities, local services, and even lost pets. The city will be able to post information, such as important news, services, programs, free events, and emergency notifications to Nextdoor neighborhoods. Free for both the residents and the city, Nextdoor is launching with six different departments. Scottsdale Police, Solid Waste, Neighborhood Services, Parks & Recreation, Libraries and City Hall will share information and ask questions at the neighborhood level. Also, each Scottsdale neighborhood has its own private Nextdoor neighborhood website, accessible only to residents of that neighborhood. Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own Nextdoor website and the city will not be able to access residents’ websites, contact information, or content. Residents with questions about their Nextdoor website should visit NextDoor.com.

How making room in your budget for high-quality photography can make your special day last a lifetime Article Rachel Hawkinson Photography Ace & Whim Photography, Amy & Jordan Photography and Jessica Q Photography
S
ome call it “the most important day of your life.” Many spend thousands of dollars to create a fairy-tale event representative of everything that is style and perfection to all who see it. So why is it that so many soon-to-be brides and grooms don’t take the same care in capturing that day and its moments as they do in creating it? Why would they take a chance on a “friend of a friend” or “someone who will do it for cheap” but who has no experience photographing weddings, as well as no proof their vision matches that of the couple’s? While the cost of wedding photography can be daunting, there is no doubt that making it one of your primary expenses will be worth it in the long run. “Photographs are the only tangible thing you have left of your wedding day,” says wedding photographer Jessica Wong from Jessica Q Photography. For that reason, Wong recommends setting your wedding budget early on and making adjustments to other aspects of the day. “I had created my own centerpieces with fake flowers and used the floral budget towards a great team of wedding photography and video coverage. Your flowers will die, and all the other stuff only lasts for one day, but photography is forever.” Jordan Demos, half of the married photography duo that makes up Amy and Jordan Photography, agrees that no matter what your overall budget may be, that it’s

important to spend more on the photographer and make cuts other places. “When it’s all over, that’s all you have left,” he explains. While it may seem obvious to have a photographer suggest that you set a larger percentage of your day’s budget to photography, their motivation is pure. Karie Denny is an experienced photographer. She and her husband, Field, comprise the fine art photography team of Ace & Whim. They have seen countless brides get caught up in making their wedding the event of the year, but leave their grooms to feel helpless and flustered. “Focus on being engaged and in love instead,” Denny suggests. “Weddings are chaotic and fast-paced. You want a photographer who has worked under that much pressure before and can take the lead.” So instead of your Aunt Martha with the nice camera or your mom’s neighbor who offered to do it for only $100, an experienced wedding photographer can take the lead and save you some stress. It is more than worth the investment. Another important focus in selecting a photographer for your big day should be your connection to the photographer and their work. Wong suggests meeting with them in person so you can ensure you have a good vibe. Meeting will solidify that both personalities mesh and the experience will be a good one for all involved. “You’ll be spending more time
with the person clicking the shutter than anyone else on the wedding day, so make sure you like them and can picture them as 'one of the girls' or 'one of the guys.'” Denny agrees that a connection to the photographer’s style is also important. “There should be a connection to the artist’s work,” she explains. “If there is not and you hire them anyway, you may be disappointed in what you get.” The value of quality wedding photography on your big day goes beyond a group photo of you and your cousins from New Hampshire that you haven’t seen in seven years. And it’s more than someone taking a photo of the bride in her dress. Demos, Denny and Wong may vary in styles and price points for their services, but they are all passionate when they speak about past couples and share a similar commitment to the importance of the day. “Our goal is to preserve a couple’s love in its raw, pure, joyous, unfiltered, emotional state for generations to come,” Demos explains. “That way, 50 years from now, when our clients are grandparents, they’ll open their wedding album and feel the real, fresh, vibrant emotion come back to life. And, their granddaughter who just got engaged herself can see how much her grandpa truly loved her grandma.” And let’s face it - party favors, open bar and five-course meals could never be (and should never be) more important that that.

am Fox certainly has a knack for developing new restaurant concepts that the community will welcome. He’s done it again adding Flower Child to the list of 15 different restaurants under the Fox Restaurant Concepts umbrella. Opened in May 2014, Flower Child brings together three important elements: healthy food, fast preparation and a casual atmosphere. A year later, Fox Restaurant Concepts is opening their second location this month in Scottsdale.
Phoenix Location
As soon as you step into the restaurant, you can feel an inviting energy. Everyone is friendly and enthusiastically greet you. They can help answer any questions you may have about the menu and its ingredients. The nice thing, too, is you can order your meal the way you like it. I was welcomed by General Manager Sean Fundiller, who has been with Fox Restaurant Concepts for three years. During that time, he has worked in a number of locations with Flower Child being his seventh. He originally started with True Food in California. Chef Zach Wethington also started three years ago at Sauce. He graduated from the Art Institute of Phoenix, Culinary. He’s been a chef for more than 10 years, previously working as chef and general manager for Corn Bakery. He also worked at a country club in Anthem and another in Colorado. “The competiveness in me is to strive to be perfect every time,” shares Chef Zach. “So each time I prepare a dish, my goal is to make it as perfect as it can be.” Yes, using simple foods when cooked correctly hold so many wonderful flavors. It may appear effortless but a lot of preparation and know-how is involved for it to get those results. Healthy Food for a Happy World
Healthy food doesn’t have to be tasteless or boring. Once you’ve tried one of the meals at Flower Child you’ll be amazed on how 14

delicious vegetables and grains can taste when cooked using fresh, organic ingredients. I started my tasting with a couple of the popular dishes – Forbidden Rice Beef Bowl and the Flying Avocado Wrap. The beef bowl is a generous serving of grass-fed beef, black rice, japonica, broccoli, carrots, onions, bok choy, cage-free egg and sesame seeds. The wrap is also a nice portion of grilled chicken, smoked Gouda, romaine, tomato, avocado and hummus. It was very fresh and housemade using whole wheat, flax and chia seed. After trying them it was obvious why they are so popular as they are fresh, colorful and tasty. From the mix and match side dishes, I sampled the red chili glazed sweet potato, the quino cauliflower tabbouleh; gluten-free max and cheese and the roasted asparagus. The quino cauliflower tabbouleh is made with tomato, cucumber, mint, feta and lemon tahini. They were all very tasty. Salads offered are kale, chopped vegetable, Thai buckwheat noodle, the granola, cauliflower Caesar, quino and Mediterranean. The kale salad is made with pink grapefruit, Fuji apple, black currant, smoked almonds and white cheddar. It was deliciously healthy. All the salads are made with fresh, organic, locally grown produce. I definitely will be back to try the other salads as the descriptions sounded wonderful. Protein can be added to any dish with a choice of grass-fed steak, all natural chicken, sustaincontinued > able salmon, and organic tofu.

Scottsdale residents are in for a treat with the grand opening this month of the second Flower Child located off Shea Blvd. and 90th Street. The same wonderful, healthy menu that’s served at the Phoenix location will be available with a few new specials. General Manager Dani Richter, who has been with Fox Restaurant Concepts for four years, has been the general manager at the Phoenix location. She also managed the Zinburger in Tucson and at the Biltmore. “We are really excited about being a part of the community and bringing our healthy, fast casual concept to Scottsdale,” Richter shares. Chef Cole McCarroll joins the Scottsdale crew bringing with him eight years experience as a chef. He has worked with Fox Restaurant Concepts since May of 2012, starting at Blanco and opening Flower Child, Phoenix. Chef Cole graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Scottsdale. He previously was the chef at Capital Grill, and at the Talking Stick Resort restaurant’s Orange Sky and Degree 270. “I’m passionate about cooking and about eliminating the processing that covers up the natural flavors of food,” states Chef Cole. He definitely is in the right spot as the flavors from the wonderfully prepared dishes will have you going back for more. Hours: Open daily – 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving & Christmas)

ith a successful entrepreneurial spirit, owners Tom and Jane Frenkel truly have a knack of knowing how to bring new concepts to the Valley. Having moved to Phoenix in 1985, they opened their first beauty mall in downtown Scottsdale. It was a new concept where hairdressers, manicurists, massage therapists and others in the beauty service industry could rent space and have their own business sharing in the overhead as opposed to carrying the whole cost on their own. This concept caught on and the Frenkel’s expanded with other locations. With the same passion, they decided to open another concept in downtown Scottsdale. It would be concept that provided a beautiful location where people could hold milestone events and create lasting memories. Construction started on February 9, 2010, and a year later the Frenkel’s opened The Clayton on the Park. It didn’t take long for word to spread as guests who attended events there fell in love with the ambiance, food and views. "Creating an event venue space that is modern and non-traditional has been a dream come true,” shares Jane. “We offer a unique and refreshing alternative for events and since we opened our doors in 2011, people have really responded to the look and feel of the venue and every year the number of events booked have exceeded our own expectations.” Living Up to its Motto
The Clayton on the Park lives up to its motto, Transcend Tradition. They go beyond, surpassing their client’s expectations. Having dreams and visions come true is what every bride wants when planning her wedding. At The Clayton on the Park, dreams come true.
22
North Scottsdale Lifestyle | May 2015
The location and facility were carefully planned out to accommodate the venue needs of their clients. The décor is fresh and modern. Three different areas can be transformed to accommodate guests. On the first floor is the Clayton Room, which can seat 120 with a dance floor, 150 without a dance floor or 200 for cocktails. Adjacent to it is the Terrace, an outdoor patio that seats 100 or 150 for cocktails. And, on the second floor is the Gallery. It is a perfect room for a wedding ceremony, with floor-to-ceiling views of the Scottsdale Civic Center Park. The Gallery can accommodate 150 seated or 200 for cocktails. A wedding coordinator will help guide you with your decisions to make sure nothing is overlooked. The venue can be transformed into a wonderful atmosphere in whatever style you choose - modern, traditional, classic, simple or glamorous. There is a choice of 36 colors to choose from for linens and tablecloths. And, the beautiful silver chairs work well with any style and color. Having a professional team handle these details, allows the wedding couple more time to get their cake, flowers, photographer and DJ. "Working hand-in-hand with our clients to create the event of their dreams is such an honor. From brides to corporate clients, we treat each one as unique and special as the event they are planning," comments Sara Cruz-Mora, marketing manager and site coordinator.
And, that’s exactly what they do. Nothing is overlooked. Even an in-house dessert bar comes with all catering packages. Based on the countless testimonies from clients commenting on how their guests enjoyed the delicious food, the Levy’s definitely know what they’re doing. New Trends
Wedding couples are getting away from formal, sit-down dinners and opting for food stations which allow guests to wander among stations trying different foods. Once you decide on a food theme, like Italian, Sliders, Down South or Sonoran, each station will then have a few different items for your guests to enjoy. Another popular dinner option is family-style dining. Large platters carrying the entrée, salads and vegetables are brought to the table where guests pass them around. It’s a more relaxed atmosphere that engages your guests. Yes, more couples are deciding to have their wedding day be a reflection on their personalities. Many of them include their favorite treats for their guests to enjoy. Even late night bites have grown in popularity serving a favorite snack. A Perfect Venue for Any Occasion
With a focus on locally grown seasonal ingredients, the chefs will create a menu that will definitely please the most discerning palate. Choices of dinners offered are plated sit-down, buffet, custom dinner stations, dessert bar and late night menus. All catering is done in-house by a well-seasoned and talented husband and wife team, Chefs Susan and Saville Levy. They have over 27 years experience. Originally from South Africa, they love to cook and create new tastes using simple, fresh ingredients. "Our goal is to create fresh and innovative menu options for our clients. No boring banquet food here. We pour our passion into every ingredient and are not fully satisfied unless our guests leave raving about their dining experience," explains Saville.
Whether you are planning an intimate dinner for 50 or a larger event for 300, The Clayton on the Park is available to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, wedding showers, cocktail parties, corporate events, bat mitzvahs and holiday parties. It’s the premium wedding and event venue which was voted Best AZ Wedding Venue by AriThe Clayton on the Park zona Foothills magazine. 7343 E. or the better part of the last decade, Classic Cakes and Confections has not just been making amazing cakes for events for all over the Arizona and beyond. They have been setting the standard. The company first opened their doors in 2006, after the husband and wife team of Neil and Ella Levinson decided to combine their talents and jump right into Scottsdale’s competitive culinary scene. But with Ella’s sculpting precision with a pastry knife that she perfected while learning the craft in Russia, combined with Neil’s construction background whose ultimate passion led him to become a master baker in Montreal, the couple felt they were prepared to find their niche by providing unrivaled, imaginative and delicious cakes that had yet to be seen in the Valley. Like most small businesses, trying to get a foot in the door during those early years proved to be a challenge, but Classic Cakes continued to be persistent and allowed their product to speak for itself. In an industry where referrals and wordof-mouth reigns supreme, over time the Levinson’s vision began to build momentum, and today have coveted partnership’s with Arizona Biltmore Resort, Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort, The Phoenician, Montelucia Resort, W Scottsdale, El Chorro Lodge, DC Ranch and Silver Leaf, among others. “We do cakes that not everybody else can do,” explains Ella. “We participated in a charity event at the Biltmore, and we did a gingerbread house cake modeled after the Disney movie Up. We took first place, but that house took six people more than 300 hours, and we even had to have an architect create a blueprint for us.”

Classic Cakes and Confections Baking Memories from Scratch Author Kory Kilmer | Photography Provided
Their hard work has not gone unnoticed. Classic Cakes and Confections has been featured on numerous local and national morning television shows as well as numerous print publications. They are consistently at or near the top of every annual “Best of the Valley” list, and in November of 2014 they were named among the Top 63 Pastry Pros in the country by Martha Stewart Weddings magazine. The Levinson’s realize, however, that all of their past and future success is dependent on having a platform on which to express their artistic creativity, and having chosen to establish their roots in Scottsdale has been key. The wedding season in Southern Arizona is a solid nine months and attracts couples from all over the world, meaning there is never of shortage of discerning clients who are unwilling to settle for anything short of the best. “Being in Scottsdale affords us a cliental who allows us to do all sorts of fun things,” says Neil. “We just had a client who had just
received a one-of-a-kind Valentino handbag. She brought it straight to us because she wanted it duplicated in cake so she could have a party for her purse. We just have great customers, and stuff like that happens all the time.” Classic Cakes and Confections’ also opened a retail shop in 2013, located in the Southbridge District of Old Town just south of 6th Avenue. There they offer a wide selection of cookies, bars, brownies, cakes, pies, and other specialty items, including a selection of treats that are gluten free. Items at the shop have a habit of selling out quickly, so the Levinson’s do recommend calling ahead at 480.994.9662 or getting there early if you sweet tooth has a craving for something specific. For specialized and custom items, such as those for weddings and other special events, consultations can be set up either by calling the production kitchen directly at 602.795.9662 or by filling out a consultation request online by visiting ClassicCakesAndConfections.com. Their website also includes an extensive gallery of previous cakes as well as other information to help assist prospective clients.

Giving Back
A Family-Owned Business Spreads Happiness To Others With Flowers And Kindness Author Michelle Guerrero | Photography Provided
S
uki Jandu, the owner of Paradise Valley Florist, makes stunning arrangements for her clients. She adds a memorable touch to their events, brightens up their homes or sends a touch of love in a bouquet. She’s magic with flowers and finds delight in making people happy. There’s one client in Scottsdale who is particularly grateful for Jandu’s service, compassion and creativity. Jandu has been donating floral arrangements to Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship’s fundraising events since 2010. While she’s been approached by many worthy causes, and occasionally helps out a few, Camelot is the one program she helps out consistently. “I initially agreed to provide floral arrangements as a one-off, I find it difficult to decide how I feel about an organization and what they provide, by a snap shot decision. I looked into what Camelot did for the community and how they have helped so many regain independence and self-worth, and they just make people plain happy. This is a very big factor for me,” says Jandu. “I attended their yearly spring fundraiser, Hooves and Heroes, and had the opportunity to listen to people talk about Camelot. I spoke to those in the community that have benefited from their programs, and they won me over hook, line and sinker. I feel privileged to be part of something in such a small way that helps contribute to many lives in such a big way.” Camelot is a nonprofit organization that teaches horsemanship to children and adults who have physical disabilities. They provide all services at no charge and depend

solely on the generosity of the community. They have two main fundraisers each year, Starry Knights, a fancy fall evening event, and Hooves and Heroes, a family fun Derby Day that takes place on May 2nd. “It’s not just the financial component of Suki’s donation that makes her contribution so special,” says Mary Hadsall, executive director of Camelot. “She designs each arrangement based on our needs, takes the time to build them herself and often delivers them to our fundraisers and sets them up. What she does for us is a mission of love.” Jandu likes to get hands-on with the events when her schedule allows. At one Hooves & Heroes, she hosted a booth and helped kids decorate their own derby hat with flowers, ribbons, sparkles and other embellishments she donated. She even brought her son to help because she feels strongly about teaching her children the value of giving. “My mother is my true inspiration in giving back. She's helped so many in different ways, and taught us to see, understand and help others in ways most would just not bother. My eldest son, Arnav, is now six, and little man Saaven is two, and both love being at the store and 'helping.' Arnav always enjoys coming along to events and the hat table was so much fun for him,” says Jandu. Paradise Valley Florist was established in 1977 and has always been a family owned and operated business. Jandu and her husband purchased the business from its founders in 2009. Originally, she was a wedding planner in London.
Learn more about Paradise Valley Florist at ParadiseValleyFlorist.com. Come visit Camelot during their 14th Annual Hooves & Heroes Fundraiser & Open House on Saturday, May 2, 2015, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and the event takes place at their unique wheelchair-accessible ranch located at 6250 E. Jomax Rd. in Scottsdale. Learn more at CamelotAZ.org.
“There is nothing like the buzz around a wedding. It of course is stressful, but the reward of a hard day’s work, when you make someone’s dreams come true, feels amazing every single time. But the transition from doing just events, to putting a smile on someone’s face every day, was an easy one,” says Jandu. “We were fortunate enough that the business has grown with us and our family. I'm a proud mother of my two boys, and the youngest one loves to create magic with f lowers already.” Jandu works about 45 hours a week, on the exception of holidays and events. She teases that on those weeks it would be easier for her to count the hours she spends at home. In addition to the flowers, the beauty of her business is that her family is often by her side. “Giving back to the community is something everyone should do, whether it be in the form of finance or time; that part is irrelevant. It's about giving, and doing what you can to create a better environment, life experiences for others and childhood for our children. We are molding them into the future adults of the world and I want them to understand that they have the ability to not only be a part of a community, but to help build a better one,” says Jandu. “I'm a true believer of positive thinking and bringing happiness to others, in the hope that they will also do the same, in turn, for someone else.” Jandu encourages everyone to do what they can for their community and feels a great sense of self-worth when helping a great cause. “No one knows when the tables may turn and we’ll need our community to help us. This is what nonprofit organizations do, they serve a need. They are already doing great things and all we have to do is make a little effort to make sure they are able to continue to serve their cause,” says Jandu. “It's a power we all have and should not waste. It's our neighborhood, we all should take the time to find a great cause that we can help.”

The Boulders, A Waldorf Astoria Resort A Timeless Affair
Article Danielle Accovelli | Photography Karen Hudak, Memories by Karen

cloudless, blue sky stood overhead and a cool March breeze rustled through the air as Justin and Lindsey Gubler prepared to say “I do” at The Boulders. “Our venue is what stands out the most,” explains Lindsey. After all, it was at The Boulders that Justin proposed to Lindsey. While spending a romantic weekend at the resort, the couple decided to scope out wedding spots when it started to drizzle. Justin suggested they walk up a hill to see the storm, and when Lindsey turned to him to remark on the view, he was already down on one knee with ring in hand—of course, she said, “Yes.” Just as picturesque as the proposal was the couple’s classic black and white-themed ceremony at the resort’s Duck Pond. Brilliant white chairs and white roses lined the site as Lindsey, in a stunning gown, was led down the aisle by her father to the man she would soon call her husband. An intimate and personal affair, Lindsey’s uncle married the couple as their closest friends and family gazed on, tissues in hand.
“I remember hearing, 'You are now man and wife,' and when we turned around, I had completely forgotten that everyone had been there watching us,” recalls Lindsey. “It just felt like me and Justin, and no one else.” As the enchanting ceremony came to a close, the couple finally took their first steps as husband and wife, glowing at the prospect of spending the rest of their lives together!

Parting Thoughts
A Nice Day for a White Out Wedding Words Denise Snodell | Photography Provided

ream gown? Check. Persnickety florist? Check. Top-notch wedding planner? Check. Unexpected glitches? Check-Check. I have attended and participated in many different weddings across the country. Every blessed event had one thing in common: some sort of unforeseen mishap. Amazingly, not one involved a wacky uncle + booze. To all future brides and grooms, “zillas” included, the only thing I can advise is to roll with the fiasco. With every marriage, your sense of humor is necessary icing on the multi-tiered cake. You may as well start laughing on day one. Here are some true-life wedding blunders from my own experiences… Years ago, a dear friend invited me to be her maid of honor. We lived in different cities. When I arrived days before the wedding, we noticed my pink taffeta frock endured travel wrinkles - despite my direct flight, oversized garment bag and careful packing. “No problem,” said the giggly bride, “I’ll have my dry cleaner press it!” The morning of the Sunday wedding, my friend realized she forgot to pick up the dress the evening before. The dry-cleaner was closed with the maid of honor’s gown locked inside! Luckily, her groom and his buddy were freshly-minted journalists. They quickly employed their investigative skills, tracked down the owner’s home number (via the fire department) and met the grumpy bed-headed man at the shop. Hours later, I began my promenade down the aisle. It was an outdoor wedding. The sky was blue. My gown was as smooth as a rose petal. The guests had no idea what had happened! But they did notice when the heel of my left shoe got stuck between the garden bricks. Good times.
Then there was the wedding of some friends in the broadcast industry. The bride had asked a talented videographer to tape her big day. He agreed, but privately grumbled to me her wedding was scheduled the same time his beloved football team was playing. He had never missed a game in his life. Ever! The videographer found a creative solution. Just before the wedding, he showed me the transistor radio in his suit pocket. The ear bud wires looked like video equipment. He was all grins until the church’s sound system somehow picked up the game’s frequency during the vows. Fumble! At my own wedding, my newly-minted brother-in-law “decorated” our getaway car with some beyond-PG-13 innuendos. No. “Innuendos” is too soft of a description for what was scrawled across the windshield. But I gave him a pass, probably due to what happened at his wedding a few years earlier. My future husband and I were a new item. I was keeping a low profile as “the girlfriend.” Shyness and some bad static cling will do that. So when it came time for the bride to toss the bouquet, I hid in the back of the room. Way back. Her throw was so wild, it surpassed the anxious “single ladies” in the front, went through the chandelier and literally fell into my arms. Sometimes, even the flubs can lead to wonderful things.
