ello, North Scottsdale. My dear friend, Moriah Schowengerdt did such a great job as editor of North Scotsdale Lifestyle and with the birth of her new daughter, we wish her well in the role of mother. It's my pleasure to take the reins from her here and I'm excited to bring you all the best of our community.
This month we will be celebrating Fall Arizona style. To me fall means great weather Halloween, tailgating, and opening up my home for fun dinner parties. This month you're in luck, we will be showing the young families out there the best spots for going trick or treating with your little ones -- if you’re willing to think outside the box that is. We even have a fun tutorial on tailgate parties, and all you need to know from ideas on different themes, things to bring, and what travels well, etc. I’m going to be taking you inside my home this month for some Southern cooking as I share with you a few of my favorite fall recipes that I have been serving up for my friends and family for years. Be forewarned I’m slightly addicted to sugar, so if most of the recipes inside this issue are dessert based you now know why! We have some great recipes from starters and dips to dessert decorated like little footballs. So cute! So keep reading and you might find yourself inspired or at least intrigued, either way I’ve done my job! This month we feel honored to be featuring a well deserving mother and her journey of starting an incredible organization called Feeding Matters. Through the journey of pain and suffering we find ourselves stronger coming out on the other side of our struggle. This mother of three sure did. Read more about Shannon Goldwater and her inspiring story in our Giving Back section. Last year my family and I went to a harvest party at North Ridge Community Church off of Dynamite and 64th street. Our kids had an absolute blast! There were train rides, live music games for kids of all ages with candy as the prize, a petting zoo and much more. This is my recommendation for this year’s place for celebrating Halloween if you have young kids and are trying to avoid the scary and not so subtle side of Halloween.

Meet the Alexanders A family who keeps God first, family second and a love for football third Article Becca Mulder | Photography Provided
T
he Alexander family has joined the Arizona Cardinals family for the second year in a row of the ten years that husband Lorenzo has played professional football. Lorenzo and wife Manjanique call Virginia home for most of the year, but they love the adventure of traveling to Arizona for football season. This all-American family comes together to support Lorenzo in making his dreams a reality, and they also give back to our community with their own foundation called the Lorenzo Alexander ACES Foundation. Together, through their foundation, Lorenzo and Manjanique host three to four free football and life skills camps for underprivileged youth each year, and they give scholarships and provide back-to-school supplies. A typical weekend for the family usually involves date night for Lorenzo and Manjanique on Friday night. Saturdays might include a birthday party for one of the kids’ many friends and schoolmates. If a new kids’ movie is released, they enjoy going to see it as a family. “Sunday we go to church and then—depending if its football season or not—we are either home watching the game or heading to the stadium to cheer Daddy on.” says Manjanique. Last month, they just celebrated becoming a family of six by welcoming their son Myles two days before sending their oldest, Vanessa, off to the University of Arizona. They also have two other children, Zoie (6), who is in first grade and their little athlete Mason (4), who is in preschool. When in Arizona, Manjanique is a full-time, stay-at-home mother. In Virginia, she works part time as a real estate agent, and she owns a pilates studio.

“Our goals for our family this year are to spend as much time together as possible while still maintaining a presence in the community,” she says. “It’s hard to juggle it all, but it’s very important to our family to give back. We believe in God first, family second, and everything else will fall into place. We are looking forward to visiting our daughter at U of A as well as the Super Bowl in February and a big family reunion next summer in Washington, D.C.” Keep an eye out for Lorenzo on the football field this year and cheer extra loud, because this family has learned the importance of life, family and—most importantly—God.

Riding the Rails in the Heart of Scottsdale October also marks the arrival of Railfair at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park Article Kory Kilmer | Photography Provided
W
hen he was still a toddler, Guy Stillman received a toy train from his brother for Christmas. That gift ignited what would become a lifelong love for the railroad, and the inspiration for what would become his lasting legacy and gift to Scottsdale—McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. Beginning in 1942, Stillman’s parents started to assemble parcels of land in and around Scottsdale. By the late 1960s, they had accrued nearly seven square miles. The property was known as McCormick Ranch and was known for raising the finest purebred Arabian horses and Angus cattle. (McCormick was the surname of Stillman’s stepfather, Fowler McCormick, who was also the grandson of John D. Rockefeller.) With the encouragement of Stillman, Mr. McCormick donated a large parcel of land from his ranch to the city of Scottsdale in 1967, stipulating that it be used as a park for residents to enjoy for years to come. While McCormick Ranch grew, so did 14

Stillman’s love of the railroad. Over a 20year period, he built a 5/12 scale replica (where five inches represents one foot) he named the Paradise and Pacific Railroad. After turning down an offer for the railroad from Walt Disney, who was looking to acquire it for a theme park idea he was working on, Stillman decided to keep it in Scottsdale; he donated it to the city in 1971. Today, McCormick-Stillman is more than just a park where families can enjoy a legendary fall day outside in the valley sun. It is a fully functioning train yard complete with a onemile track that treats visitors to a ride into another time and place. Various other park attractions include an arboretum, playgrounds, historical train cars, and a 10,000-squarefoot, hands-on model railroad building. “Guy Stillman wanted everyone to come out and enjoy this park,” explains Henry Garcia, the assistant coordinator for McCormick-Stillman. “That’s why he had his family donate the land for the park, as well as his trains.”
October also marks the arrival of Railfair at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. Held this year on October 11 and12, canopies will be erected throughout the park, and various clubs from throughout the state and beyond will come setup and run their own unique railroad displays. Some displays are interactive where kids can push buttons and pull levers to make things go, while others just simply run in the background of the good conversation of model railroad enthusiasts. Bounce houses and other entertainment will also be scattered around the event, as well as complimentary tours through the Roald Amundsen Pullman car, which was used by presidents Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, and Dwight Eisenhower at various points of their campaigns or presidencies. Closer to the holidays, McCormick-Stillman is transformed into something more reminiscent of the North Pole rather than a desert park. Train rides are offered throughout the winter evenings as riders are treated to a light display that rivals any other in the metro area. “We have tons of lights with animated displays, dancing trees, music, and even a winter village,” explains Garcia. “What makes it unique is you don’t have to walk around to see the lights; just get on the train and enjoy the ride.” December 12 marks opening night of the holiday lights at McCormick-Stillman, and it includes a tree lighting ceremony and a visit from Santa. More than 35,000 visitors come out for the three-week event, and the train runs as late as it needs to in an effort to ensure every rider with a ticket makes it back to see the lights. Located at the southeast corner of Scottsdale and Indian Bend roads, McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park is open every day of the year except for Christmas Day and Thanksgiving. Hours vary depending on exhibit and season, but all information can be obtained on the park’s website at TheRailroadPark.com. While there is no admission fee to the park or the model railroad exhibit, some attractions—including a ride on the railroad or carousel—do require tickets, which can be purchased at the park or online.

Tailgate Party Tips
Article Kathleen Blair | Recipes Becca Mulder
F
all is here and that means football season and tailgate parties. Whether you are actually at the game or having a party at your home, the pregame festivities always add to the excitement of the game. Here are a few ideas to help you have more enjoyable tailgating events that will create lasting memories.

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | October 2014
Preparation
A time-saving idea is to pack staple items in a plastic tub so each time you go to a game, you’ll have everything handy. Consider including cups, plates, napkins, tablecloth, utensils, a sharp knife, bread board, salt, pepper, paper towels, wipes, safety pins, first aid kit, aspirins, baggies or plastic containers for leftovers and trash bags. For night games, add a flashlight and bug spray. For sunny days, have sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat or visor. You may want to include a portable radio or app for your smart phone, for preand post-game news. For tailgate hot daytime games, a handheld, battery-operated fan and gel neck wraps will keep you cool. Don’t forget your sta-
dium cushions, and if it’s cool, pack a blanket. An umbrella can shield you from the sun and keep you dry in case of rain. These items can be packed in your car the night before to give you more time on game day. Next, have two coolers, preferably on rollers. Keep food in one and beverages in the other since you will be opening and closing the beverage cooler more often. While driving to your party, keep the cooler inside the car and not in the hot trunk. When you get to your destination, make sure the cooler isn’t in direct sunlight; even put a blanket over it to shield it from the sun or place it under a table. No matter the weather conditions, an awning or umbrellas can keep everyone cool if it’s hot or dry if it’s rainy. Theme Parties
Decide early in the week what types of food you plan to bring and divide up the menu with your friends. Avoid having the same food at each game by planning theme parties. Each week take one theme and prepare appetizers
and entrées that are Italian, Mexican, Asian or American. For an Italian theme, foods like ciabatta rolls with Italian lunchmeats or meatball sandwiches would pack well. For the following game, consider a Mexican theme and pack burritos, tacos, chips and salsa. Serve egg rolls, stir fried chicken and rice when you choose an Asian theme. For the American theme, you can serve hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, or sandwiches. And don’t forget dessert! Cookies and brownies are easy to make and don’t need to be kept cold while you are eating your meal. And, be sure to bring plenty of snacks; chips, pretzels, nuts and popcorn are always good. Cut-up fruit, a vegetable platter and a tossed salad are great side dishes. For the salad, keep the bottled dressings in the cooler. And, don’t forget to bring plenty of water. For tailgate party recipes, games and contests, check out the app called “Tailgate Fan.” For grilling, check out the app “Grill It.”
Grilling at the Game
Bringing a portable grill and grilling tools is a little more work, but they add more options to your tailgate party menu. Hot dogs and hamburgers are great basics served on toasted buns. Jazz them up with different types of mustards, relish, and condiments. For the hamburgers, try different cheeses, add bacon strips, avocado or mushrooms. Other alternatives are chicken or beef kabobs, bratwurst and other sausages, steak, ribs and chicken. Be sure the grill is placed where the smoke won’t drift to another tailgater’s spot. Consider bringing a propane grill so you won’t have to spend extra time heating it up or waiting for the coals to cool down. And, always have water handy as a safety precaution. Packing an Ice Cooler
It is imperative that you keep your raw foods—meat, poultry and seafood— wrapped securely in plastic containers so they don’t leak. Place them in the bottom of the cooler where it stays the coolest. Putting everything in plastic bags or containers will keep them from getting wet
Spinach Dip Prep: 15 mins Cook: 30 mins Ready In: 1 hr 15 mins Original recipe makes 12 Servings
Ingredients: 4 cloves garlic 1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained 1 (14 ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped 1 (10 ounce) container Alfredo-style pasta sauce 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
when the ice melts. After all your items are in, fill with ice, ice packs and frozen water bottles (that you can drink once they thaw), leaving no space since a full cooler stays colder, longer than a partially filled cooler. For the beverage cooler, place pre-chilled beverages on the bottom and fill with ice. Marking Your Spot
If you can, have someone arrive early and claim your spot for your party. If having a large party, pre-arrange to meet in a certain area and have a large pendant
Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place garlic in a small baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven 20 to 30 minutes, until soft. Remove from heat. When cool enough to touch, squeeze softened garlic from skins. In an 8x8 inch baking dish, spread the roasted garlic, spinach, artichoke hearts, Alfredo-style pasta sauce, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, and cream cheese. Bake in the preheated oven 30 minutes, or until cheeses are melted and bubbly. Serve warm.
or flag on a tall pole for easy recognition. For a festive look, decorate your area with team-colored balloons and streamers and wear team colors. Be sure to bring enough lawn chairs and a folding table to increase your comfort level and enjoyment. By planning ahead and knowing what restrictions there are for alcoholic beverages and grilling at the games, you’ll minimize surprises and increase your enjoyment. Locate the nearest restrooms and be sure to pick up after yourself and throw your trash away. Keep a camera or continued >

your smart phone handy to capture those special party moments. And, most importantly, don’t forget the tickets. Consider locking them in your glove box so you know where they are! Happy tailgating, and may your team always win!
Apple-Cheddar Sausage Meatballs with Dijon Balsamic Glaze Yields: 48 meatballs Prep Time: 30 min. Cook Time: 30 min. The maple-flavor is key in this recipe. Don’t worry if you can’t find the maple-flavored sausage because there’s maple syrup added to the recipe. The maple sausage will just make it that much better though! Dijon-balsamic glaze on top of the maple flavor is heavenly. Ingredients 1 (16-ounce) Maple-flavored Jimmy Dean pork sausage 1 Lg. Egg lightly beaten ½ Cup fine breadcrumbs 1/2 cup coarsely grated peeled tart baking apple 4 ounces grated sharp Cheddar cheese (1 cup) 1/2 cup Dijon mustard 1/4 cup tomato sauce 1/4 cup maple syrup 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar Directions: 1. Combine sausage, egg, breadcrumbs, apple and cheese in a large mixing bowl; stir well. Shape into 4 dozen (1-inch) balls. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook in batches of 12 or 24, turning frequently until lightly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain if desired, then return to skillet. 2. In a small bowl, combine mustard, tomato sauce, maple syrup and vinegar. Pour over sausage balls. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Transfer to chafing dish or slow cooker; serve hot with toothpicks. 18

Double Chocolate “Football” Cupcakes Yield: 18-24 cupcakes Ingredients 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 3/4 teaspoon baking powder 3/4 teaspoon salt 2 large eggs 3/4 cup warm water 3/4 cup buttermilk 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 8 oz. unsweetened chocolate, chopped 6 cups confectioners’ sugar 16 Tbs. (2 sticks) unsalted butter 6 Tbs. milk, plus more, if needed 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1/4 tsp. salt Instructions Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line standard muffin tins with paper liners; set aside. Sift together cocoa powder, flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt into a large bowl. Add eggs, warm water, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla, and mix until smooth, about 3 minutes. Scrape down the sides and bottom of bowl to assure batter is well mixed. Divide batter evenly among muffin cups, filling each 2/3 full. Bake until tops spring back when touched, about 20 minutes, rotating pan once if needed. Transfer to a wire rack; let cool completely.
For the Frosting: Have all the ingredients at room temperature. Put the chocolate in the top pan of a double boiler set over but not touching simmering water in the bottom pan. Stir until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Let cool to room temperature. In a large bowl combine the confectioners’ sugar, butter, the 6 Tbs. milk, the vanilla and salt and beat with an electric mixer on low speed until combined, about 1 minute. Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl. Increase the speed to medium and beat for 2 minutes, then reduce the speed to low. Reserve about a 1/2 cup of the frosting at this point to make the laces. Add the chocolate gradually and beat until combined, then increase the speed to medium and beat for 1 minute more. If the frosting is dry, add more milk, 1 tsp. at a time, until it is creamy but still holds peaks. To Decorate: Using a small star tip in a pastry bag, zig-zag the chocolate frosting in a diamond shape on the cooled cupcakes. Then put the reserved vanilla frosting into a bag with a small round tip and pipe on the laces.

every major market both nationally and internationally, and have graced the covers of countless magazines and starred in mainstream films and television programs. Some notable past/present clients include Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), Kellan Lutz (the Twilight Saga), Max Adler (Glee) and Gena Lee Nolin (Baywatch).. Hartwell’s personal style advice is to keep it simple. “I love pairing basic colors and pieces with some colorful shoes, accessories, and handbags,” she says. “I have always been a big fan of animal print shoes and bags. Blue 32 Sports Grill An upscale sports grill Article Kathleen Blair | Photography Provided
I
t’s that time of year again when we cheer our favorite teams to victory. It definitely is a fun time whether you are at the game or watching the game with fans at a sports bar. I am so excited to share my recent discovery: Blue 32 Sports Grill. They have one of the best television setups I’ve seen. Forty flat screen TVs are positioned so no one will miss a play. Plus, there are four more on the patio. This spacious restaurant can seat 244, with tables and booths nicely spaced apart. The atmosphere is welcoming; not dark like many sports establishments.
It all Began In Atlanta
Owners Steve Conrad and Kenny Rea have been friends since their college days in Atlanta, where they worked for the same restaurant. That’s also where they met their future wives, Danielle and Stephanie. And it’s where an idea was birthed that someday they’d have a restaurant of their own. Rea was the first to move to Arizona with the restaurant and Conrad transferred shortly after. 22
North Scottsdale Lifestyle | October 2014
Whenever they got together, they would work on their business plan of what their place would be like. Slowly and steadily they put the plan together and waited for the right time and proper finances to open their first sports grill. Their dream became a reality, in Gilbert, with the kickoff of the Cardinals and Steelers Super Bowl Sunday game in 2009. Managing partners Mark Huttanus and Samantha Lindsey joined later with the opening of other locations. Huttanus, also a college friend, brought 15 years of experience with the Cheesecake Factory. Lindsey previously worked for Rea as a general manager. In the past five years, they have successfully opened four locations, with more to follow. Food Focused
Blue 32 is a casual restaurant with a sports theme that delivers quality, fresh food at good prices. The menu offers a wide variety of selections where everyone will be able to find an appetizer or entrée that is sure to please. The recipes are created by the owners and prepared by the trained kitchen staff. Fresh ground burgers, steaks and seafood are cut inhouse daily. They also have a wide selection of salads and sandwiches with house-made salad dressings and sauces. continued >

“We may be a sports bar, but we want to be known by our food first,” states Huttanus. “We’re an anytime restaurant and not just for games.” I found that to be true as I tasted the Pastrami Sliders, which consist of lean pastrami in a small stack piled on a fresh bun with sliced Swiss cheese and Dijon. Very good! Next, I tried the Black and Bleu 32 Burger, which is half a pound of lean, certified Angus beef, that is ground fresh daily, served with thick-cut apple wood smoked bacon and crumbled blue cheese. Juicy and delicious! A popular seafood item is the hand-cut Atlantic salmon served three different ways—grilled, blackened or with an orange chipotle glaze. I enjoyed the glazed salmon salad and wasn’t disappointed. The salmon was fresh, moist and flaky. Other popular menu items are the Tacos al Carbon made of marinated Angus beef, grilled and served in fresh tortillas; baby back ribs, slow cooked for 10 hours and basted with barbecue sauce; three chicken entrees—blackened, country fried or grilled; and grilled jumbo shrimp. If you like fries, you are in for a treat as theirs are crispy coated. You won’t find plastic utensils, plates or cups here. Every detail has been thought out with the customer in mind. “Baskets are for sports and not for food,” states Conrad.

The owners, having families of their own, wanted a place where families could feel comfortable and everyone would have a choice of items to order from and enjoy. The kids menu, for children under 12, has a selection that includes mac and cheese, two mini-cheeseburgers, steak bites, hot dog, chicken fingers or grilled cheese. Each meal is served with fries, mashed potatoes, baked beans or broccoli and a small drink. Other specials are Tuesday Tacos; half price for kids on Wednesday, with an adult entrée; happy hour food menu and drink specials; and breakfasts on weekends during football season. The limited breakfast menu consists of eggs, meat and potatoes, beef burritos, breakfast sliders, chicken and waffles served with gravy and syrup, corn beef hash and chicken-fried steak with eggs. Adults will enjoy their 20 beers on tap and 11 locally brewed draft beers from breweries Sun Up, Pappago, Four Peaks, Sleep Dog and San Tan. Guiltiest food pleasure? I absolutely LOVE pasta, bread, and cheese! Normally I try to stay away from them all, but when I want to indulge that is what I crave. Title of a book on your bedside table? Funny...right now I am reading (for the 2nd time) Smart Women Finish Rich. I am brushing up on the “investing and saving for the future” part of my life! How would your best friend describe you? I would hope they would say I am loyal, dependable, a good listener, and of course most important to me: FUNNY! Organization that gets most of your volunteer time? (school, church, charity)
FGI- Fashion Group International. FGI is a global, non-profit, professional organization with 5,000 members in the fashion industry including apparel, accessories, beauty and more. I am currently serving my third year as a district director that oversees six regional cities in the Southwest. Best vacation ever? There are a few but one that I will never forget was a trip to London and Paris with my husband (then boyfriend). He proposed on Christmas Eve under the Eiffel Tower while the snow was falling and the carolers were signing. It was too iconic, I know but it sure captured my heart!

“Our Family Values Bring You The Value You Deserve!”
Favorite date night restaurant? House Brasserie in Old Town. We love sitting outside on the patio with the fireplaces going while we enjoy wine and amazing food. Best thing about living in North Scottsdale? There are so many things are our fingertips; restaurants, shopping, entertainment, etc. What do your record on the DVR? Silly things for our daughter like Peppa Pig and Calliou. Not a big TV person myself... Favorite cocktail? I always love a great glass of Chardonnay in the summer or Pinot Noir in the winter. Where do you wish your husband would buy your next gift? Mogollon Rim...I would love a mountain escape vacation home in Pine or Strawberry. Favorite sports team? I am mostly a basketball fan. I seem to watch the most basketball during the NBA playoffs. Best advice for entertaining in your home for special occassions? Keep things simple and casual. If you can cater the food in, do it. Then you can relax and enjoy your company and your home without the worry of food preparation!

The Happenings at North Ridge Community Church Article Becca Mulder | Photography Provided
N
orth Ridge Community Church (NRCC) is a community-based church that is sensitive to the current difficulties many folks face. They have many support groups such as GriefShare, DivorceCare, Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, Adult Children of Alcoholics and Mending the Soul. You never know what struggles can happen in this life, and it’s important to have a support group around us so we don’t have to go through tough seasons alone. That’s why NRCC makes these groups available. And you don’t have to be a member of NRCC to join. Come just as you are! “Earlier this year we decided to take our entire Easter offering and pour it back into our community by helping single parents and widows with their electric bills,” says Senior Pastor Mike Burnidge. “Our congregation was extremely generous. The program was so successful we extended it though June as well. We were able to gift 277 families by paying more than $54,000 in electric bills. We actually still have some funds left and are working on another project that will benefit our neighbors in need.” 28
North Scottsdale Lifestyle | October 2014
North Ridge Community Church also has a fantastic mom’s group called Kate’s Cup, which is a great place for new moms to get support and encouragement. Kate’s Cup attracts moms from all over the area, and you do not need to attend NRCC to participate. This fall they are kicking off a new moms group, Mom’s Next Step, for older moms (35+) or moms with older kids in 5th to 12th grades. So grab yourself a cup of coffee and join North Ridge’s women’s ministry for some much-needed time to connect with God and other moms who are at the same season of life you are. Remember: Kate’s Cup is for moms whose children are still in elementary school, and Mom’s Next Step is for those whose kids are in grades 5 – 12. For more information on any of these programs, or if you’re just wanting to connect, call 480.515.4673 (HOPE) or visit NorthRidge.org. NRCC is located at the corner of Dynamite and 64th streets: 6363 E Dynamite Boulevard Cave Creek, AZ 85331

MOTHER DISCOVERS THE WISDOM OF FRENCH PARENTING MARGARET MITCHELL HOUSE
While charting her own experiences raising three children in Paris, Druckerman interviews Parisian friends and neighbors as well French teachers and childcare experts. Druckerman discovers that French parents are extremely strict about some things, and strikingly permissive about others. The result is children who are just as boisterous, curious, and creative as Americans but far better behaved and more in command of themselves.

Get in the Game Article Hona Amer
T
he bright lights flicker as they light up the night sky. People fill the stadium; spectators have come to watch the game. The players run onto the field, excited and ready. They are gearing up for their moment to shine. As the game starts, the clock begins to move; anything is possible. The underdog might rise up and win, or the favored team will pull out a victory. As both teams play to win, the stands are full of people cheering like it depends on them. The players are running down the field, but the attention is drawn toward the sidelines. The coach is talking to a player, but then the fans in the stadium happen to notice a few people sitting on the bench. Some are just resting from playing, while others look like they haven’t even played. Their eyes wander around, distracted and counting down the minutes until they can go home. It just hasn’t turned out like they expected; they thought that they would be the star of the team except that they have sat on the bench most of the season. As you know, no one usually signs up for the football team with the sole desire to sit on the bench. Fans don’t usually cheer for the second string benchwarmers. There are benefits to sitting on the bench. It can be safer than playing in the game. The chance of getting tackled, injured, or disappointed after losing is reduced. We can take this same type of mentality into our own lives. Sometimes in life, we resign ourselves to sit on the bench. Instead of actively engaging in the biggest game of our lives, we hold back and decide that it would just be better to sit. Some people live their whole life sitting on the bench. They want to participate, but they know the cost. They know that they might get out of breath and need to drink some water. They know that they might get pushed around or miss the ball. The risks are present. Sitting on the bench is a way to minimize the risks. Yet, is it possible that it is also shrinking our lives? Benchwarmers are
not names you remember. If a player sitting on the bench tried to tell everyone about the comfortable seat, the perks and benefits of watching from the sidelines, people would think it was ironic. The point is not to sit on the bench; the point is to play in the game. If you are still breathing, then you are still in the game. You might have been knocked down, injured, or broken, but you are not finished. If you have air in your lungs, you are not done. Let’s give it all we have while there is still time on the clock. Yes, there will be a cost. Without the cost, we will also miss out on the joy, excitement and victory. We will miss the moments when we overcame the obstacles, because we decided to push through. The person who made the winning touchdown is remembered, but we also remember the people who helped make it happen. No moment is too small if you commit to being present, because the big moments are made up small moments. If you have been sitting on the bench of your life, time’s up. The coach is calling your name. You’re up. It’s time to get in the game. Hona Amer, a MBA graduate, is a business owner, professor, author, and lover of life.
