EVERY YEAR WHEN MAY MAKES ITS WELCOMED RETURN TO OUR CALENDARS, WE CAN’T HELP BUT SING THE LINE FROM THE TEMPTATIONS’ “MY GIRL” THAT GOES, “WHEN IT’S COLD OUTSIDE, I’VE GOT THE MONTH OF MAY.” This month brings with it an abundance of joy—bright blue skies, a rainbow of flowers and, of course, the celebration of mothers on May 12. In this issue, we not only celebrate mothers but we also highlight all the wonderful women in our community—Business Owners, Life Coaches, Culinary Artists...to name a few. The following pages are filled with stories to inspire us all to appreciate the women in our lives and to strengthen the connection we have with our mothers, sisters, friends and daughters. The Women’s issue serves to recognize the powerful role women have in our community and beyond. (And don’t worry, gentlemen; you’ll have your moment—stay tuned.) A SMILE IS THE FIRST IMPRESSION, A SMILE SPEAKS VOLUMES-DR. RITZAU GUARANTEES A POSITIVE, UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE. ARTICLE LISA WHITTEMORE
NOT ONLY DOES KRISTEN RITZAU DDS HAVE A WINNING SMILE AND AN ENGAGING PERSONALITY, BUT SHE ALSO HAS A PUBLISHED BOOK ON HER LIST OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS. Her book, Distinctive Dentistry, details her personal experiences and innovative perspectives regarding her chosen profession. Ritzau credits the success of Shoreline Dental Studio for the implementation of ideals that she learned, cultivated, and has valued since her youth. Ritzau is a third generation San Clemente local; a tried-and-true southern California beach girl.
“I spent my summers at Lost Winds playing volleyball. My
dad helped start the junior lifeguard program in the 1970’s
so by the age of 10 I was doing that and leaping off the
pier! Our family spent entire days down at San O, picnick-
ing and surfing,” says Ritzau. “Today, we stay true to my
roots and carry on these traditions with my two children.” Ritzau’s personal history and ties to our local community are woven into the core values of her dental practice. Both her parents and maternal grandparents placed great importance and reverence on staying close-knit with those who surround you. Ritzau’s Fournier grandparents moved here in the 1950s. Marian Fournier still lives in their original home overlooking Linda Lane and the Pacific Ocean. Her grandfather, Gene Fournier, arrived in San Clemente as a marine. Once retired from active duty, he and his wife remained committed to devoting time and energy to their causes. The Fourniers held fast to the idea of a legacy of service and care, often opening their house on holidays to those far from home. Ritzau’s father, Larry Moore, was employed by the city of San Clemente for 45 years. He rose up in the ranks, starting as a beach lifeguard and retiring from a position in city hall. Both Ritzau’s mother, Jean Moore, and her younger sister, Kari, are local nurses. From an early age, she was exposed and attracted to the idea of caring for others. “I love having a personal connection with my patients,” says Ritzau. “Some of them are my former teachers and coaches who were instrumental in my life. Now I’m honored to pay it back.” Dr. Ritzau was hand-selected by another longtime local dentist, Dr. Boatman, to adopt his local practice. The studio on 122 Avenida Cabrillo is open; bright sunlight filters in through spacious windows. Fresh flowers adorn the front desk. Comfy armchairs are in the lobby. The office staff welcomes patients as soon as they step through the door. A child’s note affixed to the wall reads, ‘thanks for fixing my daddy's teeth.’ In every exam room, across from the dentist chairs, are panoramic picture windows with lush plants, vibrant flowers, and birds flitting about. Out of one window, an old wooden door hangs on its side. Ritzau and a friend replaced the glass panes with an array of succulents. The fact that San Clemente is Ritzau’s beloved home is reflected not only in her attitude but in her office space as well.

(CON TI N U ED)
The décor of Ritzau’s business is not the only thing that is unique and unconventional about the dental studio. The manner in which they have formatted the office staff is also distinctive. Ritzau and Dr. Colby Livingston are the two dentists on board. The five dental hygienists, four dental assistants, and the three people running the front office are all women. Organizing and running this all-female practice, as the trusted office manager, is Ritzau’s husband, Cory. It’s right here where the crucial concept of TEAM is regularly put into action.
“All my years at San Clemente High School I was an avid athlete and an integral part of a team,” says Ritzau. “I’ve
carried over the values I learned there into my practice today;
a strong work ethic, looking ahead and setting goals, and being a member of a team that works together.”
Everyone at Shoreline Dental Studio is dedicated to enacting the core values that Ritzau elaborates on in her book. Ritzau views herself not as a boss but as a leader and a coach. The whole office works as a unit, producing seamless results for everyone involved. All clients are treated on an individual basis yet everyone receives sincerity, kindness, and respect. The staff considers one another family so this translates to the patients as well. They literally “get to know people beyond their smile.” To them, being team-oriented means working in concert with each other even behind the scenes. Ritzau subscribes to an alternative form of schedule crafting. All employees support, encourage, and openly communicate with one another. They coordinate shifts to accommodate both their ‘home family’ as well as their ‘work-family’. An office full of consistently happy and satisfied employees positively affects those who are seated in the dental chairs. On their website, a long time patient is quoted as saying an appointment at Shoreline Dental Studio is “an experience, not just a visit.” Ritzau has found a way in her dental practice to honor both family and community. For the past two years, on Veteran’s Day, they’ve opened the office to military veterans for a day of free dentistry. Last year, with a concerted team effort, they performed over $40,000 worth of work on veterans seen that day. This is simply one example where their integrity is clearly demonstrated, and how they make good on their promise to “over deliver in all aspects.” “Every mouth has a story,” says Ritzau. “I do my best to respect and listen to every single one.” For the past four years in a row, Shoreline Dental Studio has been voted ‘Best in San Clemente’ in regard to dental care and customer service. Ritzau’s blueprint for success, the trinity of family, community, and team, are words that are closely intertwined and practically used interchangeably in their studio. And it’s obviously a theory, that when put into practice, is panning out well from every angle!

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE ARTICLE DONNA BOND, M.A. PROFESSIONAL COACH PHOTOGRAPHY DONNA BOND
Create Soulful Connections USING “AND” INSTEAD OF “BUT”
SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR ACTORS IN MOVIES OF THE LAST DECADE HAVE COME OUT OF THE “IMPROV” WORLD SIMPLY BY SAYING “YES, AND…” TO THEIR FELLOW ACTOR IN SCENES THAT ARE IMPROVISED. This makes the scene crackle with possibility because everyone’s in the same creative flow, living in the moment. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Don’t we also respond well when the other person we’re talking to not only acknowledges our point, and builds on it? Put “but” into the mix, however, and it’s like a record scratch. All of a sudden a previously smooth road has a jarring speed bump in it. Insert even more buts and a potentially joyful interaction can turn into a jolting, unpleasant experience, and we’re not even sure why. Making the shift from “but” to “and” for myself has been hugely transformative, as it has for my clients as well. One in particular started using this technique recently and was able to create possibilities in her life that weren’t available before, so I thought I’d share a little more about it with you. Consider this: A group of people are sitting in a circle around a particularly interesting sculpture in the center. Each gazes upon it and develops their unique take on it. Each has their own uniquely distinctive perspective. Some see it straight on, some from the opposite end. Some similar, some very different. Yet, all shared as they sit in this circle together. "but" can feel like a record scratch

FROM A PROMINENT WOMAN

Ocean to Ranch Lifestyle | May 2019
TODAY THE PHRASE, “HAVING IT ALL” IS USED SO OFTEN AND FACETIOUSLY THAT IT HAS BECOME AKIN TO SOME NEGATIVE JOKE. When the question is posed about whether women can “have it all,” the answer arrived at is typically no, along with some skeptical scolding of those women who ever had the nerve to think they could. There has been heated debate over the years from prominent leaders, influencers, and news outlets about this concept. The popular thinking is that the term translates to great achievement in both business and family. This is the story of a woman who has managed to balance a traditional family while also achieving multiple career successes as a feminist icon who leads by example. A first-generation Italian-American, Lucy Ann Vallera Luhan, (Lucia) was born in Connecticut and raised in a household where traditional foods and values prevailed. She helped her family can fruits and vegetables that were grown in their garden and prepared fresh pasta daily. With an extended family of relatives from Italy, traditional food habits predominated. It was the foundational food culture and passion for convivio that set the tone for Luhan’s life as a wife, mother, sister, friend, and thirty-five-year career as a restaurateur in Southern California, and eventually inspired her to open Villa Lucia, a bed and breakfast/cooking school in Tuscany, Italy. Villa Lucia is Orange County’s most popular Tuscan villa, which has served over 5,000 guests in the last 30 years. Where they also produce boutique and organic olive oil which has been highlighted on The Today Show. Luhan’s most recent accomplishment is authoring a book called Convivio which translates to “gathering around the table” and tells heart-warming stories of good food, good company and good health.” In Convivio, Luhan chronicles the family history and explores the different food cultures between Italy and America. As a strong, dynamic and loving woman, Lucy Luhan has always made her husband, children and extended family her number one priority. Food has been the vehicle which keeps family together and traditions alive. If “having it all” is truly defined as a combination of personal and professional success, then Luhan has achieved great success. Learn more about Lucy Luhan by purchasing Convivio, visiting Villa Lucia in Tuscany, or dining at Luciana’s Italian Restaurant in Dana Point.

TABLE DECOR INSPIRATION FOR MOTHER’S DAY
I LOVE CELEBRATING WOMEN! Especially in the month of May, honoring women who are mothers’ and those that care for us “like a mother” is so important. To make the day extra special, I enjoy designing my table décor with touches and inspiration from my guests of honor. For me the time together at the table is for reminiscing and sharing stories from the past and present surrounded by lovely things to see, smell and taste. One of my favorite lifestyle bloggers for inspiration is Becki Owens @ BeckiOwens.com. Her creative ideas always speak to me, and for Mother’s Day table décor, she provided just the perfect amount of inspiration for my Mother’s Day brunch.

According to Becki, creating a centerpiece or place setting of old family photos is such a fun idea for Mother’s Day. It creates a tribute to the lifetime of memories your mom helped create. Love the look here with black and white photos paired with bright florals. Photo by Sugar and Charm
A table full of succulents creates color and texture. Love them paired with these pretty blush colored pots. It softens the look and makes a pretty feminine statement perfect for the table, according to Becki. Photo by ISpyDIY
For a beautiful simple and rustic look, Becki recommends you let the colors of fresh fruit and juice be the centerpiece. Everything looks so fresh and delicious. Using white plates and simple glassware creates a clean table décor for brunch. Photo by Lovely Life

SWEET, SALTY AND SOUR, CREATING THE DIVINE BALANCE IN EVERY MEAL The restaurant, a hidden gem and a stone’s throw from the Dana Point Harbor, is a perfect setting for total enjoyment and family owned for over a decade. Jordan Richey is at the helm and leads with a total feeling of love for every customer. “99% of our customer base is women, Richey said.” The restaurant’s popularity is based on a dynamic menu offering breakfast and lunch with inspired plates and those your pallet will remember forever. The finest and purest ingredients are side by side in every dish and made to order. “Our customers come back over and over again. We treat each person with special care and welcome them on a first name basis, Richey said.” I indulged with the Kaui Benedict, served on a delicate muffin, layered with a spread of avocado mash topped with arugula, several slices of rare seared sesame ahi and a perfect poached egg. There was magic to the flavor with the creative toppings of wasabi powder and smoked paprika, a mouth dropping masterpiece. On the sweeter side of the palette, they had a special of the day which was the Goat Cheese Tartine served with fresh strawberries, a true delight. What A Dish serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week and I’m sure your pallet will thank you for the experience.

On any given day, you’ll surely see guests enjoying this inviting environment. Cafe Hermosa...a San Clemente family affair. Bragging rights are certainly in order for this charming neighborhood cafe. Jamie and Joe Madison created an enlightened dining experience offering breakfast and lunch featuring healthy and organic choices adorned in a clean cozy environment. This is the way of the new world of eating. Everything on the menu is made from scratch and especially for you. The creative juices really flowed when Madison’s made their menu selections. It’s a hard decision when viewing the offerings and I might suggest sharing just for the tastings. The mouthwatering salad selections are served up with abundance. I decided on the Chinese Chicken, piled high with iceberg lettuce, wontons, Mandarin oranges, red cabbage, almonds, sesame seeds, carrots, scallions and drizzled with a savory sesame dressing; just so delicate and delicious! I added a slice of homemade Vegan coffee cake with flavors to die for and a Vanilla Lavender Latte. It just doesn’t get any better than this! The tables are filled with happy conversations with people of all ages especially enjoying the picturesque bountiful plates of selected menu items. “Our afternoons are filled with high school kids who love the food and enjoy our outdoor patio dining. Our weekends are filled with families who are excited to treat their children to healthy choices. During many weekday lunches, we serve over 200 salads, Jamie said.”

We’re not afraid to be silly and enjoy life while we work. Without the fun-loving attitudes and heartfelt inspiration behind the scenes, it may not feel as true to our roots at the end result. Loving what we do, pouring our passions and flare into our treatments, and working with only real ingredients keeps our space friendly, thriving, and our bodies healthy… so we can go full speed ahead.
