I
’ve always sort of joked that I blame my father for the fact that I’m still single. He’d set the bar too high, I’d say. How was anyone ever going to live up to mon père?
My father, the man from whom I get my high cheekbones, a fearless spirit of adventure, an affinity for a good glass of wine and the love of sailing. And, of course, my beautiful and oh-so French last name. Aboard a 1969 Hinckley Competition 41’
I know, my single-life status can’t be entirely blamed on dear ol’ dad. But with the way he’d respected and indulged and guided me, I’d learned early on the security and unconditional love that came from someone who was always my biggest fan. A father’s emotional strength ideally shows their children the path to follow on life’s journey. As a young girl, when he’d first taught me to sail, he would always remind me that ‘worse things happen at sea.’ Being the Navy guy that he is, I knew that his go-to phrase probably meant something quite significant, but to a 10-year-old girl, I’d always been quite perplexed by it. From what I could surmise, the sea sounded pretty big and scary if the phrase was literal. This sea, was life. Over the years, as Dad and I have sailed on different boats and in different bodies of water, I see that life is often like that of the many different conditions thrown at you while under sail. Some of the waters are smooth and calm, letting you enjoy the sights and sounds. But some are rough and choppy, when you have to keep your wits about you just to figure out how to set your anchor. And then there are the times when the motor fails and you have to just rely on the sails to bring you into a safe harbor, letting them fill to move forward or trimming them ever-so slightly in order not to crash into the dock. I should’ve realized that while worse things do happen at sea, those quiet moments next to my father on a sailboat gave me the strength to figure out how to chart my own life’s course. Sitting there with him as he’d sail along, or guide me as I took the helm, I’d always felt so safe, so protected. I see now why I look for a man to emulate my father: my heart is safe with him and his strength protects me. A father’s devotion is truly unmatched in its role as a helpful navigator for his children’s lives.

Grand Met Fine dining takes flight at DFW Airport’s Grand Hyatt Article and Photography Joseph Daniel
A
irports make me crabby. Expensive parking, pat downs and crowded terminals – not fun, not fun, and not fun. I’ll still go, but I require a grand incentive. (Think icy beverages in Los Cabo, Mexico.) But one place is making my trips to the airport worthwhile: the Grand Met, a restaurant (and lounge) serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, located in D/FW International Airport at the Grand Hyatt hotel. Recently renovated, the seating, kitchen space, menus and even Grand Met’s branding received upgrades. Short of tearing down the whole floor, almost everything got a facelift. “The renovation originally began with a few sketches for items that we wished to upgrade,” says Matthew Brink, director of food and beverage. But not settling for just a few sketches, the project turned into a full scale overhaul to make the space more inviting and warm. “The restaurant now takes on a candle-lit, sophisticated feel for dinner,” Brink adds. “The culture of our guests changed. They were looking for a retreat when dining instead of being inundated with too much media blaring from all directions.” Of the original fixtures, only the wine wall remains, which was already an eye-catching glass enclosure stocked with a comprehensive selection of wines (including one of my personal favorites, 16 OneFourteen Lifestyle | June 2014
the Prisoner, a red wine blend). Dishes change every season, prepared by Chef de Cuisine Adam Schaffer, who follows a farm-to-table philosophy of using fresh, locally sourced ingredients when possible. I had the privilege of trying some new menu items, including an oolong tea-smoked hamachi yellowtail, delicate and fresh, and a pan seared, succulent duck breast with baby fondant potatoes on a sour cherry jus. “Our culinary line is globally inspired, regionally sourced,” says Brink. For breakfast, you’ll find an egg casserole, a small cast iron skillet of eggs, Toma cheese, oven-dried tomatoes, Berkshire ham, melted leeks, and chives served with brioche and potatoes. Each bite has a salty spike from the ham or a tangy bite from the tomatoes, or both. The staff recommends
“Our culinary line is globally inspired, regionally sourced.” the chilaquiles verdes con pollo, a gluten free, Mexican dish of scrambled eggs, pulled chicken, avocado, tomato chunks, and onions mixed with corn tortilla pieces. Piled high and circled by a slightly spicy green salsa, Grand Met’s chilaquiles are a flavorful, savory gratification. Other breakfast options include a Belgian waffle with berry compote and apple batter French toast. My favorite is the Strauss regional burger from the lunch menu, a well-seasoned burger stacked with crunchy onions and bacon in between a bun with crispy edges. Clamp it with both hands, dip it in the accompanying chipotle aioli, and revel in its juiciness. I haven’t had a chance to explore the dinner menu just yet, but with dishes like pan roasted Mero sea bass with a shiitake mushroom mirin soy broth and an Eden Farms Berkshire 10 oz. pork chop with handmade gnocchi on a morel mushroom truffle jus, dinner sounds superb. The lounge, which doubles as the Grand Hyatt’s lobby, has a menu of its own “lighter fare,” like a charcuterie board of cured meat, mustard, pickles and grilled vegetables, and a caramelized Texas onion dip with kettle chips made in-house. But the lounge’s real appeal stems from the hand-crafted cocktails, like the refreshing, fruit-scented “Fig Fizz” of Absolut Pear, fig, lime, lemon, and ginger ale, along with a modest sushi menu. That’s right – there’s even a separate menu of nigiri, sashimi, and rolls at the Grand Met, fresh and beautifully prepared like everything else. Crabby? Not possible when a rainbow roll with fresh snow crab is sitting right in front of me.
And just to make sure my inner grouch remains subdued, Grand Met customers receive complimentary parking for up to three hours (and complimentary Internet access). Free airport parking: now that’s a grand idea. When it comes to dining, no one likes to eat out more than Joseph Daniel. Formerly, he covered the DFW dining scene for the Star-Telegram as a freelance restaurant critic and food photographer. Having lived in Mexico for a decade, he has an affinity for Latin American cuisine. His latest obsession is the food of Japan, especially sushi.

Working Out at Home Create your dream workout space at home. Article OneFourteen Staff
W
ith packed schedules at home and work, a lot of times it’s hard to always fit in a trip to the gym for busy moms and dads. That’s why local families are turning to the idea of installing a home gym or a few key pieces of fitness equipment, whether to address all of their workout needs or as a complement to their gym membership or training routines. And with summer right around the corner, it’s a great time to think about converting an unused guest or rec room, maybe even the extra garage, to an inhome workout area. Depending on your fitness needs and space you can install just a couple pieces of cardio or a full range of cardio equipment and strength training items such as free weights and machines. “For those individuals with a good amount of space, building a home gym often includes multiple pieces of cardio and strength equipment,” explains Alpha Fitness Co-owner Gary Dagampat, who along with partner, Carli Strength, started the fitness company in October 2013. The two friends, former athletes in their own right, also own the Pur-Fit gym in Colleyville and will soon be launching a youth sports performance academy. Yes, they both have in-home workout spaces in their own houses. “We both enjoy fitness and always have,” Dagampat says. “And being able to workout at home and with our families in addition to hitting the gym is a big part of our fitness routines.” Growing up in San Antonio, Strength played football and 18 OneFourteen Lifestyle | June 2014
boxed in high school and Dagampat, who grew up in southern California, played football, baseball and basketball including serving as captain of the Napa College basketball team - and eventually became assistant basketball coach at Victor Valley College. “Staying fit through sports, cardio and strength conditioning is a way of life,” says Dagampat. “And Carli and I have instilled that lifestyle into our respective families.” Strength’s children play baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball while Dagampat has a son coaching at Westlake Academy and another playing football at Grapevine High School. “Aside from the obvious advantages, including convenience, privacy, personal design, sustainable cardio and strength workouts, and the resulting health and aesthetic benefits, owning a home gym can contribute significantly to a family’s fitness lifestyle,” Dagampat says. He says the biggest motivating factor for people to install a home gym is that individuals are able to establish and maintain targeted fitness levels within the convenience and privacy of their own home. “We can help them take their fitness plans and goals and build a specific, customized home gym that will not only help them reach their goals but because the space is so nice and inviting, it will encourage them to work out more frequently.”
they will find ways to best complement your workout needs. “Those with less space can own commercial-grade equipment and get the same quality workout provided by larger home gyms only with a little less variety,” Dagamapat says. For cardio training, the most popular in-home pieces are treadmills and elliptical machines. For strength training, it’s multi-unit pieces, free weights and power racks. “We work with our customers to determine their respective fitness goals and expectations, and then discuss with them different equipment and accessory alternatives in order to meet their needs,” he explains. Dagampat says it is important to use commercial-grade equipment at home versus the less expensive options because of the quality design and materials; commercial grade is built to maintain optimum functionality and aesthetics much longer than standard home equipment and in turn allows for a much greater return on investment for the customers. Alpha Fitness Solutions will install and maintain the equipment too, meaning all you have to do in your in-home gym is workout. Consider Alpha Fitness your one-stop shop for planning and building your home gym. All you need to do is sit down with Gary, Carli or one of their staff members to design your home gym. They’ll help you make all the decisions, from space planning and any needed renovations to what pieces of cardiovascular equipment to choose as well as figure out what sound system and televisions are best used in home gyms. They also work with decorators and remodelers to get you exactly the look and feel you want in your space. “Whatever it is you want in a home gym, we will help you get it,” Dagampat says. And he means they’ll help you do everything: if you are unsure about where to start, let the Alpha Fitness Solutions guys walk you through step-by-step and they’ll guide you as you make decisions. Or, if you already have an idea of your fitness needs, spend some time talking with the staff and

MEMORIES Fly Fishing, a time-honored tradition, brings together fathers and sons.

many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

ishing, a pastime that spans generations and is shared by many fathers and sons. For a nod to Father’s Day, OneFourteen Lifestyle decided to go a little beyond traditional fishing and spend a day with some local fathers and sons as they received a fly fishing lesson from an expert guide. A recent Sunday found our group pulling on waders, tying flies and learning how to achieve that fluid motion that is casting a fly rod. For a brief few hours, on the shallow banks of an inlet on the north side of Grapevine Lake, time eased by a little more slowly, the quiet of nature filled the air, and the distractions of the day-to-day faded as these dads and sons spent some quality time together learning an age-old pastime. While fly fishing, an angling method where an artificial fly is used to catch a fish, is often done in rivers and locations perhaps more picturesque than the banks of a North Texas lake with a water level that’s still too low, fly fishing guide Eric Jackson says that you can cast a fly rod just about anywhere. So, in the effort to steal away some time together, our group of fathers and sons learned how to use a fly rod, reel and a weighted line to fish. Fly fishing can be done in saltwater or freshwater and can be employed to catch many different varieties of fish, from trout to bass to crappie, and techniques are slightly altered based on the location, be it lakes, rivers, estuaries or even the ocean. Some of our area lakes are in fact known for good bass fishing using a fly rod; and rivers just north of the Texas-Oklahoma border provide some great spots for fly fishing. Author Izaak Walkton called fly fishing the ‘contemplative man’s recreation’ for its inherent quiet and idea of a solitarily figure and a line becoming so close to a particular fish, with nature. “Fly fishing really provides a forced mental escape,” explains Jackson. “When you’re working to catch a fish on difficult waters, you’re sort-of forced to not think about anything else and just concentrate on the task at hand.” “When you hook a fish and ‘play’ the line, you become truly connected to the fish.
–Henry David Thoreau
“For a young fisherman, Owen did really well,” Guide Eric Jackson (above left) says. Seeing Chad (as seen on the cover) and Owen on the water together, focusing on nothing but the quiet task at hand was a snippet of true father-son bonding. Later, as Owen pulled off his waders and dumped the remaining water from his boots, he exclaimed with his 10-year-old enthusiasm, “This was really the best day fishing!” “We’re usually so busy with all the other activities -- and Owen’s a great sport about being patient at his sister’s dance recitals — that it was great to get out here with him.” The duo spent time working with Jackson on getting Owen to learn the feel of the cast and how to manage his line. Trophy Club resident Chad Lamb had fly fished in the streams of Colorado before and the opportunity to show his eager 10-year-old son Owen what it felt like to cast a fly rod was one he looked forward to. continued >

casting memories (continued)
Through the line and the bed of the rod, you feel everything that fish does, every movement, every struggle.” Jackson, a certified casting instructor through the International Federation of Fly Fishing, is accustomed to introducing people to the sport of fly fishing. “Connections are made on the rivers when you have a fly rod in your hand,” he says. “I see it all the time on the water, fathers and sons of all ages getting out and enjoying something they both enjoy in a beautiful, relaxed environment.” According to Jackson, even first-timers find the sport a little easier to pick up than they’d expected. A typical day with a guide will include time spent gearing up in the waters and other gear as well as learning the principles of how the fly rod works and the movement of casting. And then it’s pretty much time to search for the ideal spot to begin to fish. “Someone will usually get the movement down easily enough,” he says. “In about a half an hour, we’ll have them casting. The learning and the finesse comes into play as they learn line management, or the presentation of the fly. Fly fishing is something that everyone can pick up and enjoy.”
fly fishing is not an escape from life, but often a deeper immersion into it. –Harry Middleton

Guide Eric Jackson remembers falling in love with fishing as a young boy when his family would travel to Colorado for summer vacations. The day that stands out in his memory was the time that he was fishing along a stream when he saw a man across the banks fly fishing. Seeing the man catch fish and using the beautiful movement of fly casting, the young Jackson was, well, hooked. These days, he guides for novice and experienced fly fisherman (and women) alike. Most often, he’ll take groups to Broken Bow, Okla., to fish along the Blue River in Beavers Bend State Park. Good spots to stay for a weekend of fly fishing in Oklahoma:
Southlake resident John Thane (above center) sees that time is flying by with his teenage sons, Daniel, 19, and Jacob, 15, especially as Daniel is set to head off to Tarleton State in the fall. Spending a few hours together brought the trio together to try their hands at something a little different than the rod-and-reel fishing they normally do on Grapevine Lake. “It was a little more difficult than any of us expected, but it sure was enjoyable,” says John, who picked up the technique quite easily, even though it’d been nearly 20 years since he’d attempted to fly fish in Missoula, Mont. “It was really great for the three of us to spend some time together on the water and introduce the boys to the sport.” Thane and his sons are now planning a weekend-long fly-fishing trip with guide Eric Jackson to southeastern Oklahoma.

Safe At Home Women and Children in Crisis Find a New Path at The Gatehouse Article Cristen Hixson
T
he Gatehouse is a unique community being built in Grapevine to help women and children in crisis disrupt the cycles of deep-rooted issues — such as abuse, poverty, repetitive incarceration, or even divorce — with long-term solutions through safe refuge, practical resources and healthy relationships. Our current social landscape is littered with the debris of these challenges, which are often too devastating to navigate alone. That’s where The Gatehouse steps in — to help women and their children in crisis discover a new path for permanent change. Temporary assistance for women in crisis through shelters and emergency agencies is just the beginning of a woman’s journey toward healing. When women are in a short-term shelter, rehab program or jail and make a decision for permanent change, The Gatehouse is the next step. Gatehouse gives them enough time to learn how to live out that decision. This supportive living community, which allows members to stay up to 2½ years depending on their individually tailored program, will offer the accountability members need to seek freedom from the past and hope for the future. Most women leaving a crisis situation need three to six months to heal and an additional two years for education to cement self-supportiveness. During members’ stay, Gatehouse’s faith-based Independent Life Program will provide housing, transportation, child care, food, clothing, education, employment guidance, medical care, counsel-

ing and life skills mentoring uniquely without government funding. In 2008, Lisa Rose and a group of women started First Friday, a free once-a-month experience to give women a practical hand up for life’s challenges. Moving from inside church walls to taking the message into the community, they host local and national experts September through May at Harkins Theatre in Southlake, where more than 400 women each month get real talk about real life (FirstFridayWomen.com). The First Friday experience transformed into the nonprofit projectHandUp, through which the founding leaders could create a way to offer women a hand up that would lead to permanent, positive change — where the cycles of abuse, poverty and help-
lessness could be disrupted and change generations of lives. At that same time, Deborah Lyons, now executive director at The Gatehouse, had envisioned a fully integrated, non-government funded supportive community for women in crisis. God brought the two women together, and Deborah was invited to join the journey with projectHandUp. In August 2012, projectHandUp purchased 61 acres outside DFW Airport, approved unanimously by Grapevine City Council, for 96 families to live and house a community/conference center, in-neighborhood counseling centers, walking trails, a general store, clothing boutique and commercial space. Currently, concrete foundations are poured, buildings are being framed, and Gatehouse staff anticipates accepting women as soon January 2015. All of which wouldn’t be possible without the support of the surrounding community and trendsetting donors dedicated to seeing women and children in crisis discover a new path to permanent change.

Tesla Becomes A Texas Thing Tesla’s all-electric Model S rewrites the rules Article Tom Strongman
W
alk up to the all-electric Tesla Model S, and the beautifully sculpted flush door handles glide silently out to greet you. The handles, themselves a work of art, are an invitation to a driving experience that is silent, sophisticated and addictive. I was fortunate to be able to sample the experience through the generosity of a local Tesla owner who let me drive his car, the most powerful P85 performance model. The first thing you notice is how beautiful the car is. The four-door has a coupelike profile with muscular flanks and a purposeful stance. Its lines are fluid and smooth, much like the power delivery of its AC induction electric motor. The second thing is the bank-vault quiet and the incredible acceleration of the P85. It launches from a stop like a Porsche Turbo (minus the noise), pinning you back in the seat like a jet plane on 26 OneFourteen Lifestyle | June 2014
takeoff. Zero to 60 miles per hour comes in 4.2 seconds. Top track speed is 133 mph. Consumer Reports called the Model S “a nearly perfect car,” the best it has ever tested. Motor Trend magazine awarded it the 2013 Car of the Year and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it a five-star crash rating. It is built in Tesla’s plant in Fremont, Calif. With top-quality materials and fit and finish equal to or better than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or BMW 7-series, the Model S has a hard-to-describe but easy-to-feel sense of heft and road presence. The low center of gravity (because the litium-ion battery pack is under the floor), instantaneous torque from the electric motor and lack of noise make it feel as if you are flying a magic carpet. The more you drive, the more you want to drive.
Regenerative braking recharges the battery as the car slows and it is strong enough that letting up on the the throttle is usually enough to bring the car to a stop with very little brake application. Range anxiety, so common in electric cars, is rarely an issue with the Model S unless you have a long trip in mind. The 60 kWh battery has a range of 208 miles, and the 85 kWh battery has a range of 265 miles. Range depends on how you drive. The acceleration is enthralling but if you mash the throttle a lot the range will be shortened considerably. Drive reasonably and you should be able to get close to the EPA-certified range target. Charging can be done with a 110-volt outlet, but that takes a long time. Buyers will want to install a 240-volt outlet at their home. The car can be equipped with a 40-amp charger or an 80amp charger that is twice as fast. To facilitate long-distance travel, Tesla is installing Superchargers along well-travelled highways in North America and Europe. These proprietary stations will provide a half charge in 20 minutes. The Model S was designed by Franz von Holzhausen, formerly the director of design for Mazda’s North American Design Center and before that, a design director at General Motors responsible for the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky and Opel GT. A similarly beautiful Model X utility model will be available in 2014, and reservations are now being taken. When you slip into the cabin, you’re greeted by an iPad-like flat screen in the center of the instrument panel that is almost as big as a 17-inch laptop. Most all of the car’s functions can be controlled from this screen, and it can also display a full-screen navigation map. The Model S is a hatchback with room for five passengers. Cargo space is quite large with the seats folded. Two small rear-facing seats for kids are optional. The front trunk, where an engine would normally reside, is quite spacious.
Aside from tires, brake pads and windshield wipers, there is not much to wear out. The company says routine software updates handle most issues, and the car monitors itself. The company recommends every year or every 12,500 miles. The owner can take the car to a service center or for $100 Tesla will send a technician to the car. Tesla is planning valet service that will pick up a customer’s car and leave a loaner in its place. There are three Model S versions, available online with a fully refundable deposit. The model with a 60 kWh battery has a range of 208 miles, hits 60 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds and has a base price of $69,900. The 85 kWh battery has a range of 265 miles, hits 60 in 5.4 seconds and has a base price of $79,900. The Performance 85 kWh hits 60 in 4.2 seconds and has a base price of $93,400. Max out the P85 and the price can be $124,320. All base prices quoted are after a federal tax rebate of $7,500 that you receive when you file your income taxes. Installation of a home charging unit is additional. Price
The 2013 Tesla P85 belonging to a local owner came with a base price of $94,900. The tech package was an additional $3,750, personal delivery was $990 and final inspection, prep and coordination was $180. The as-driven price was $99,820. Warranty
Four years or 50,000 miles. The 60 kWh battery has an eight-year, 125,000-mile warranty and the 85 kWh battery has an eight-year, unlimited-mile warranty.

Future Stars on the Rise Area Students Take to the Stage with Local Production Company Article Jill Lord | Photography Annie Drake

id you know there is an award-winning theater in our own backyard? Ohlook Performing Arts Center has been in Grapevine for the past 12 years producing great theater and instructing students in the theater arts. Started in 2002 as a theater school and performance venue for students, Ohlook grew along with its numbers. As students graduated and went to college, they wanted to return to their theater during holidays and summers, so Ohlook added a late night series and now is known as one of the best community theaters in the nation. In 2012, Ohlook won Best Production at the National Festival for the American Association of Community Theaters (AACT) and later went on to win at the International level at the Liverpool Theater Festival in Nova Scotia, Canada, a feat no other Texas theater has ever accomplished. Ohlook’s Master classes (made up of the finest students, who perform through out the year) received the highest honor, Outstanding Production, at the iTheatrics Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta in January for their production of Pirates Of Penzance. Even though Ohlook’s community theater is thriving, the students are the heart and soul of the theater. Many Ohlook’s stu30 OneFourteen Lifestyle | June 2014
dents are interested in pursuing a life in the theater arts. Ohlook’s goal is to prepare students for this real world. Graduates have attended some of the most prestigious universities in the country, starred in television series (Logan Henderson, “Big Time Rush”) and are now working actors in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Ohlook prepares them by offering some of the best instruction in the area and by bringing in special workshop guests through out the year. For example, this month, students in Ohlook’s Musical Theater Camp will be treated to a workshop and concert with Tony Award Nominees Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (composers of A Christmas Story, Dogfight and Edges). The concert is open to the public, tickets are available on their website, but the workshop is just for students in the camp. Ohlook offers countless opportunities for students to perform, including eight different productions this summer, five of which students 18 & under can audition for: Aladdin Jr., Catch Me If You Can (Regional Premiere), The Addams Family (Regional Premiere), Peter Pan and ColumbinuS. Additionally, there are camps all summer long for ages 3-18, and ongoing classes throughout the year. OhlookPerform.com

Healthy Grilling for Dad’s Day Article Suzette Zara | Photography Joy Reynolds
A
s temperatures heat up, fire up the grill. Honor dad for Father’s Day with these healthy grilled recipes easy enough for a kid to make. Spicy Pepper Stuffers are a healthy alternative to those popular fried poppers, and they’re guaranteed to make dad happy with their creamy cheese filling. Naturally low in carbs, they are a rich source of vitamin A and capsaicin, loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits. The portobellos are also a nutritional powerhouse, providing terrific immune system support. Both recipes are easy to prepare and ideal for entertaining guests at any Father’s Day barbeque.
Grilled Portobello Burgers
These tasty burgers are a terrific healthy alternative to traditional beef burgers. Portobello mushrooms are actually cremini mushrooms which have been allowed to grow large. Low in fat, portobellos are a good source of fiber and potassium. The meatiness of the portobello allows them to stand up well to grilling. The tasty balsamic marinade provides a flash of flavor, while the low-fat Rosemary Ranch Spread adds a cool, creamy contrast. Ingredients: 4 large portobello mushroom caps, wiped clean 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons chopped rosemary 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 4 slices reduced-fat Swiss cheese 1 cup fresh spinach or green lettuce leaves 1 large tomato, sliced or chopped 1 large avocado, peeled and sliced 4 buns (reduced calorie and/or whole wheat, to taste)
for 20 to 30 minutes, turning occasionally. When heated, brush grate with oil or lightly spray grill pan. Place mushrooms on grill, reserving marinade for basting. Grill until tender, about 5-7 minutes per side. Brush frequently with marinade. Place one slice cheese on top of each mushroom during the last few minutes of cooking. Grill buns until lightly toasted. While mushrooms cook, prepare the spread by stirring together all spread ingredients in a small bowl. Brush top and bottom of each bun with spread. Place lettuce leaves on bottom of bun, top with mushrooms, tomatoes, avocados. Serve promptly, with a side of lowfat tortilla chips or Creamy Lean Potato Salad.
Rosemary Ranch Spread:
1 cup nonfat Greek yogurt 3 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary 1 tablespoon lime zest Juice of 1 lime Directions: Preheat grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. In a small bowl, whisk together balsamic vinegar, oil, rosemary, salt and pepper. Place mushrooms in shallow baking dish, and spoon marinade over mushrooms. Let stand at room temperature 32 OneFourteen Lifestyle | June 2014

Here’s a fun spicy appetizer to fire up any outdoor barbeque. These delicious stuffers are actually quite healthy. Try topping them with Monterey Jack or feta, to vary flavor. Or, double the filling, for extra gooey stuffers, and use cheese mixture as a dip with lowfat chips. They can easily be made in the oven, too. Simply bake stuffed peppers at 350°F (8 to 10 minutes), then top with cheddar, and broil
until melted (3 to 4 minutes). Use a variety of colored peppers, for visual appeal. These peppers are great for easy entertaining. If making ahead, simply stuff the peppers, cover and chill. Grill when guests arrive.
Directions: Preheat grill to medium-high heat. In a large bowl, combine Neufchatel (soften in microwave if too hard), parmesan, onions, lime juice, ¼ cup shredded cheddar, salt, garlic and 1 tablespoon cilantro. Stir well until thoroughly combined. Evenly divide cheese mixture to fill each pepper half. Place peppers, cheese side up, on grill rack or grill grate coated with cooking spray. Cover and grill peppers about 6 minutes; top each pepper with cheddar and tomatoes; continue grilling about 2-4 more minutes, until cheddar is melted and bottoms of peppers are charred. Place peppers on serving dish; sprinkle with cilantro. Best served warm. Yield: 12 appetizers. Calories: 86; Fat: 4.3g; Protein: 2.9g; Carbs: 2.1g. Cost Per Serving: $.88.

Real Life Super Hero Words Hona Amer
M
ost little boys dream of being a super hero. They want to have strength to lift cars, the ability to fly through the air, or to become invisible at any given moment. They embody the role by wearing red capes around their house, wanting to save the day. They jump off tables, willing to take a risk. Courage, bravery and valor become stamped across their minds. These boys grow into men who still have a heart to make a difference. Great men are pillars of our society. These men were pioneers who discovered uncharted territory out west. They signed the Declaration of Independence. They were the ones who discovered electricity and first took flight in a plane. These men were the ones who fought battles on foreign soil with great courage, even if it cost them their lives. All of these feats have impacted our society. The desire to change the world and be the hero doesn’t leave when a man reaches adulthood. Men are on the hunt to do something significant. Many times, they become the salesperson who can make a deal, the doctor who saves lives, or the police officer who protects people. In their professions, they wear the armor of a hero. When the day is over and they come home to their families, the cape tends to fall by the wayside. Finding their place in the home can be difficult. Instead of saving lives, there are dirty dishes and crying babies. Yet, we, your children, still see the cape, because great fathers are heroes at home as well. The greatest role a man can ever play is one that cannot be eas34 OneFourteen Lifestyle | June 2014
ily replaced. That role is the role of a father. Great fathers take on the responsibility of raising the next generation. Children grow up needing a father who will encourage, discipline and love them. Even more, they need a father who is present. When they go play in their baseball game, they want to know that he is cheering in the stands. When they go to their choir audition, they want to know that he will be there for them no matter the outcome. Even though they know their dad won’t be perfect, they need to know that their dad will be present, even when life gets difficult. The season of going to baseball games, choir performances, or ballet recitals doesn’t last for long. As the days turn to weeks and the weeks turn into years and graduation is on the horizon, it might seem like we, your children, don’t need you anymore. Even though we want to make some of our own decisions, we will always need you. Instead of helping us tie our shoelaces, our need for you begins to change. We need help getting our car started when the battery dies. We need advice on which college to attend. As we reach adulthood, we need the wisdom and insight in knowing how to raise great kids. Though our needs will change as we go through life, Dad, we will always need you to be present in our lives. When we all have wrinkles and distance separates us, we still want you in our lives. Even if the cape seems tattered and worn, we never stop seeing you wear your red cape, because you have proven to be our hero over and over again.
It’s A Good Day To Be A Dad.
