s I write this letter, I’m on a trip cheering on some of my closest friends as they compete for a national title in cycling. They’re some of the best in their sport and since it coincides with this month’s theme for the magazine, it has me pondering the word best and what that means in our lives. For my friends, it truly means months, years of hard work of training and dedication, sacrifices and the exhilaration of the wins that helped propel them to a level that allows them to compete on a national level. Their best is measured with every pedal stroke and will be ultimately decided by the finish line. But to those of us around them, we know that how they finish won’t make them any better than they already are in our eyes.

Determining the best of something is both figurative and literal, isn’t it?
Joseph Daniel, Falon Mihalic, Brian Mothersole, Mark Rawlings, Tom Strongman
Literal means where you place on a scorecard. Those who finish 1, 2, and 3 get to be the best on paper. Since I will also be at the bicycle races covering them as a member of the media, it will be my job to report on the top finishers, whether or not my friends’ names appear on that ‘best of’ list. Figuratively, even those who don’t finish in the top spots can still be deemed the best because we view them as the best. I know my admiration for my bicycle racing pals does not change if they do not climb to the top podium spot. (But my goodness, how my heart burst with happiness when a couple of friends won a national jersey!) Often, we determine someone or something or some place is the best because there’s a special, maybe sentimental meaning attached to it … so we’re all correct in our determinations of what’s best because our opinion is our own. We all see the world through filters, based on what we like, what makes us happy, and so on. And sharing what we think is best with friends and family is, well, the best part. Whether we post a photo of a friend’s accomplishment on social networking or mention a favorite lunch spot, we are all sharing ‘the best’ from our own, individual point of view. It’s the best kind of recommendation. A new perspective often offers us the chance to see everyone at their best. Our differences are what represent the best in all of us.

Wildwood Grill Fresh, homemade comfort food served in an upscale setting Article and Photography Joseph Daniel
I
’ve spent a good part of the year exploring Southlake’s dining landscape, and from fast-casual to fine dining, it’s obvious there’s no shortage of options. I’m continuing my tour at Wildwood Grill, best described as elegant without being stodgy and comfortable without being folksy, which means it fits well within Southlake. Entering the restaurant, you’re punched with the intense aroma of hickory and oak. For guys like me who like all things wood-burning (seriously, you can’t beat the smell of a wood-fired grill), it’s an inviting scent. It’s beckoning. Drawing me toward their menu, with dishes made from scratch every day. According to owner and Southlake resident Dave Garner (co-operator with wife Mary Garner), if it can be diced, sliced, mixed, mashed, or made in the kitchen in any other way, it happens at Wildwood. Tomatoes are roasted in-house, potatoes are peeled and sliced, sauces are concocted in the kitchen, and even the meats are cut at Wildwood. Nothing is frozen, everything is fresh. They even make their own chicken stock. (I personally know how tedious that can be.)
12
OneFourteen Lifestyle | October 2014
All that translates to food that makes mouths happy. Dave says it’s comfort food, basically. Dishes like the butternut squash soup, smooth and creamy, and the chicken tortilla soup, bold and soothing, are dishes you’d swear have the potential to heal. The Dragon Dip, an appetizer, includes a soft pretzel and a salty, mustard-grain cheddar dip – yes, made in the kitchen at Wildwood. The pesto fritters, our favorite, include fried pesto risotto placed on top a marinara sauce covered with cheese. Slightly crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, these fried goodies should make their way to the State Fair of Texas, never mind all the other fried stuff. The cocktail menu is small, but don’t pass up the Blueberry Basil Bliss cocktail with vodka, basil, and blueberries. Like a magenta-colored elixir, it’s bright and sweet, another perfect summer cocktail for my libations list. Wildwood also stocks local craft beers and has a wine menu of nearly 100 wines. From the entrees, you have hand-cut steaks and chops, sandwiches, seafood, and salads to choose from. Prime hanger steak with green peppercorn demi-glace and a ribeye with supremely savory and cheesy au gratin potatoes are two enticing options. More meat is featured in the ancho prime steak flat bread topped with tangy balsamic and caramelized onions as punchy as the restaurant’s woodsy aroma. And as a testament to Dave’s comfort food mantra, try the skillet macaroni and cheese, made with asadero, Parmesan, and cream cheese, and loaded with vegetables. You always liked your vegetables with cheese, right?
Comfort food, cocktails, and wood-fired aromas: all made in-house by the Garners and company at Wildwood; all things they use to beckon customers to their tables. And it seems to be working. The place has been making mouths happy for five years now. Joseph Daniel likes exploring DFW restaurants and loves writing about them even more. Previously, he covered the DFW dining scene for the Star-Telegram as a freelance restaurant critic and food photographer. Having lived in Mexico for a decade, he has an affinity for the Latin American cuisine. He currently maintains DallasPatioFinder.com, a restaurant and bar patio directory.

Hall’s Pumpkin Farm and Corn Maze Ushering in Fall Family Style Article Debra Caffey | Photography Janet Slusser
T
hose of us who are regular passersby to the intersection of Pool Road and Hall-Johnson know the anticipation of waiting and watching for the first signs of fall. It doesn’t begin with the turning of leaves or with the gusts of cooler air. Rather, it begins with the plowing under of the plot of land that sits on the southeast quadrant directly across from Compass Church. There in the heat of summertime, when temperatures threaten to soar near triple digits, the Hall family begins its annual labor of love of bringing a community fall tradition to life. If only for a few months, the agrarian roots of this area are exposed, and all of us watch with excitement as the field is turned, seed is planted, and ground is watered. We are
jubilant when the first tiny shoots of green burst forth, and in the months to come, we measure the growth of cornstalks against the wooden markers at the edge of the field each time we pass. We know when they are 5’ or more that time is nearing. We count down the days during September. We watch for bright bursts of orange to peek through the greenery of the pumpkin patch. And finally, we watch for the vintage truck to arrive at the gate, for signs to post, and for the twinkling lights to be strung. Dating back to 1929, the Jess Hall family has owned and farmed this piece of land. From 1956-1970, they even operated a dairy. Jess and his wife built the family home, which still stands, and raised two children, a daughter, Jessie Lou, and a

son, Marvin. Today, Jessie Lou, her two children, their spouses, and her grandchildren all live on what is left of the original acreage. As one of the last working farms in this area, the family enjoys maintaining the traditions that founded Grapevine and the surrounding communities. They still run a small herd of cattle, and each fall they give area residents a reason to come in for a small taste of it when they open the gates to Hall’s Pumpkin Farm and Corn Maze. So, like families did in the days of old when the carnival came to town, we stream through the gates night after night between the designated opening that first week of October and the dimming of the lights on October 31. We pick through the pumpkins for just the right one to take home for carving on Halloween night. We test our skills and our courage wandering through the corn mazes in the dark of night. We bounce along behind the tractor on the hay ride. We load up on Poppy’s Smoke Shack BBQ, warm bags of Pop’s Kettle Corn, and cups of hot apple cider. We laugh with friends
and family. We take pictures to remember our time together. If we are really fortunate, we do it more than once, and all of the kids and kids-at-heart find just a little bit of magic on that corner of land. A visit to the farm is almost as much of a tradition for those of us that go each year as it is for the Hall family to ready it for our arrival. Surely, if you’ve never been, then this is the year to begin. Once you do, you’ll understand like the rest of us, and you too will watch for the signs and wait in anticipation knowing that we will be back year after year for as long as the Hall family opens the gate and issues us an invitation to step inside. Fall Nights Outside
Coyote Outdoor Living, Inc., coyoteoutdoor.com
October is the Perfect Time for Outdoor Entertaining Article Falon Mihalic
A
s the start of the fall season brings cooler temperatures to Texas, many people look for ways to spend time outside. Backyard entertaining with cooking and dining areas are a growing trend in landscape design. There are many things to consider when designing an outdoor kitchen space, but don’t jump into buying expensive gadgets and products before planning the overall space. It’s important to first create a timeless framework for an outdoor entertaining area that can accommodate a variety of activities. Establish the overall concept design for the space and then begin to shop for materials, lighting, and appliances. Here are some tips to get you started on the design of a fresh outdoor entertainment area that will help you get the most out of your own backyard. First, establish the style you want for your outdoor space. Consider your home’s exterior color scheme and how an outdoor area might complement your interior design as well. Do you want a rustic, contemporary, eclectic, or modern look? Next, prioritize the design and construction of a defined surface area like a deck or patio. The type of surface you choose impacts the overall style and construction budget. Decks can be modern or rustic and made out of sustainably harvested Cypress or recycled composites. A patio surface could feature local stones for a rustic setting or refined stone tiles for a more formal appearance. Whatever type of surface and style you choose, know that the most beautiful work is created by skilled artisans. Hire an experienced, detail-oriented carpenter or mason for the construction of your deck or patio.
and proportions of the entertaining space need to work in conjunction with your home and property size. Plan a central space for outdoor cooking. The fundamental components for an outdoor kitchen include a permanent gas grill or wood-fired oven, a deep-set sink, and a food preparation surface. Providing electricity to the cooking area opens up more options for entertaining, too. A small fridge to keep drinks cold will be appreciated by your guests. Also, don’t forget the importance of music at your party. Outdoor speakers can be installed within the cooking area to take advantage of electrical connections. Create a nice microclimate for your gathering space. A shade structure is essential in the Texas heat. Shade options include canvas stretched between tensioned cables, pergolas, or a large shade tree. Permanent shade structures can do double-duty and integrate lighting, ceiling fans, and décor. I hope you feel inspired to spend more time outdoors. An outdoor entertainment area is a great investment for your home, and will be a place to create memories with friends and family for many years. Do You Know What Financial Road to Take? Make sure your direction is clear before starting your journey Article Mark Rawlings, CFP ®
W
ith financial markets at all-time highs (at the time of this writing), never have I received more inquiries about “what should I do now?” My response every time is “it depends.” What you should do now all depends upon where you want to end up. If you set out to go to a friend’s house for dinner and you have never been there before and you never received the address or location, would you just drive around aimlessly until you happen (hopefully) upon their neighborhood, then maybe locate their street, and then walk up to each door to knock and ask if they live there? It sounds crazy, doesn’t it? If someone asked you to come over, but they refused to tell you where they lived or how to get there, you would probably never agree to leave your house. You would want to know where you were going before you started out to get there. It sounds so obvious – and yet, too many investors make investment decisions with no idea about where they are trying to go and what they want to find once they get there. At United Capital we talk about the “two eternal truths about decision making,” and the first one is that lack of clarity and understanding of yourself and the situation at hand will lead to poor decisions. Without taking the time to be clear and specific about what you want, and to understand your biases toward money, your experience is most likely one of aimless wandering in the hope that you will get close to the financial end you seek. While some investors might know they want to save for college, retire comfortably, support a loved one or pursue philanthropic interests, few think about the journey required to get to these end goals. You will need to make a lot of big decisions and trade-offs along the way. We all have a viewpoint of money that is an accumulation of what we’ve learned and experienced over time. A bias could be:
You can never have enough money saved, or: If I die tomorrow, at least I have lived life to the fullest, and hundreds more like this. When we combine our biases with our lack of specific direction, we have a potential for making bad decisions that don’t lead us anywhere, much less where we want to go. Before you make another financial decision, be sure you are clear about what you want to accomplish and why it’s meaningful to you. Have a process and a checklist each time you make a financial decision. And don’t ever accept an invitation to go to dinner somewhere without getting an address beforehand! An Editor’s Choice list of some great recommendations in our area While the term “Best of” is possibly the easiest way to describe what this list comprises, after much debate, the editorial staff determined that perhaps this should be considered more of an Editor’s Choice compilation of restaurants, shops, familiar places, local hangouts and things-to-do that represent the best of what our OneFourteen cities have to offer. This is not a ranking, not a winner’s list, not the result of a popular vote. This is us, sharing things we like with you, our readers and our friends. We’ve bookended this October issue pondering the meaning of the word best and have decided that it’s really a word of many meanings, but that it’s truly a fine word to describe what makes something extra special.
And so we pose a question to you, our loyal readers: What does ‘the best’ mean to you? Tell us what it is to you personally, or let us know about someone who does their best to always help others, or maybe you’d like to share your own quick list of some of the best spots along this eponymous highway of ours. But share your best and let us share it with everyone else. Send replies to AnneC@LifestylePubs.com

Trophy Gardener’s Behind The Garden Gate Tour Bringing Life to a Community Memorial
Article Debra Caffey | Photography Trophy Gardeners
T
exas State Highway 114 begins its journey west from the heart of the metroplex in Grapevine. Cutting a path through the northwest corner, it makes its way through increasingly smaller communities before departing for the countryside beyond. Just past Southlake is where you’ll find the city of Trophy Club. Named for the collection of Ben Hogan golf trophies that were originally intended to be housed in the clubhouse of the 18-hole championship golf course that the city surrounds, Trophy Club is inhabited by approximately 11,000 residents who take great pride in the quality of life offered by their city. And many of these residents, in return, work tirelessly to make their home an increasingly better place to live and visit. Among the groups that exist for such social and civic purpose is the Trophy Club Women’s Club, a non-profit organization formed in 1980. Most notable, among
26

the many subdivisions of the club, is the Trophy Gardeners. Comprised of about one-quarter of the 200 or so members, the Gardeners bring more to the table than a green thumb and a mutual interest in beautiful landscapes. From its inception, the group has contributed to the beautification of its city. The work of the club focuses on civic projects that include landscaping for the fire station and Christmas decorations in the main roundabout as well as benches along the miles of city trails. Funded with monies raised from their annual fall garden tours, there is much to be admired. However, there was a time when a desire sprouted in the minds of some members to make a mark on Trophy Club with a more meaningful effort that would leave a lasting legacy to the city. From the small seeds of an idea and the dedication of a few women, dream moved to reality, and the beginnings of a project
for a monument to the service men and women of our country took root. Sharing their idea with the Trophy Club Parks and Recreation Department, a cooperative effort was launched, and a tract of unused, partially landscaped land was located on a rise between two schools on Parkview Drive. Offering up a line of cedar trees and an outcropping of natural stone, the property was set aside for the venture. A memorial committee formed that included several members of the retired U.S. military, and the Trophy Gardeners voted to allocate a significant portion of the funds raised from the garden tour that fall toward laying the foundation for the new park. By Veteran’s Day of 2012, the flagpole and up lights were erected and dedicated in a public ceremony at the Military Veterans Memorial at Independence Park. A plan was then struck for a multiphase construction, and the Trophy Gardeners pledged approximately 75 percent
of their 2013 garden tour proceeds, along with contributions from other sources, to the construction of Phase II. This consisted of a walkway and monument along with an area for generic pavers of appreciation. The 2014 garden tour approaches, and they will again be pledging their support for the project with hopes of initiating Phase III. This portion is expected to include the installation of five granite tablets denoting each of the five branches of the U.S. Military along with an area designated for commemorative pavers honoring veterans. Trophy Gardener Chair Jan Tomlinson is proud of this endeavor. “We are a really tight-knit community here,” she says, noting that the Trophy Gardeners cannot take all of the credit for the project. “We have many material and financial partners that have stepped up to help us. Trophy Club is a community of patriotic people, and we are pleased to have the support of the Stars and Stripes organization and that of a group of 5th grade students from Beck Elementary that raised funds through their “Living Museum” program.” Tomlinson also praises the City of Trophy Club Parks and Recreation and the many companies that have donated time and materials on behalf of the project. She and Sarah Goodrich, the 2014 garden tour chair, invite everyone to come out to support the project by attending the upcoming October 5 event Behind The Garden Gate… A Garden Tour. Taking place rain or shine, the tour will feature five residential garden tours followed by a fun finale at Trophy Club Park Garden. The crowd will enjoy hot dogs and refreshments served by the parks department and music by DJ, Scott Smith, and the Trophy Gardeners will offer up door prizes, a raffle, and a silent auction for all to enjoy.

Style & Substance BMW’s Spirited M235i Takes Things Up a Notch Article and Photography Tom Strongman

MW’s M235i is the spiritual cousin to the 1600/2002 from the late 1960s and early 1970s. I bought a white 1600 in 1969 because I couldn’t afford the more powerful 2002 and I loved it. It was small on the outside yet roomy inside, had incredible visibility thanks to the tall windows and it handled like a sports car. The strategy behind the 2 Series is similar to that used for the 1600/2002: Make a compact coupe with sporty handling and, in the case of the M235i, blistering performance and incredible fuel economy for such a powerful car. The M235i has 320 twin-turbo horsepower from a 3.0-liter six-cylinder and either an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. The car from BMW’s press fleet had the eightspeed automatic with manual shift paddles, and it was delightful. Hard-core enthusiasts may choose the manual but frankly, the automatic is so good, and can be shifted manually when desired, that it would be my choice. Base price for the M235i is $44,025. The 240-horsepower 228i has a four-cylinder engine and its base price is $33,025. My 1600 had several recurring issues that eventually caused me to sell it after a couple of years but I still remember how much fun it was to drive. Those 28

Eco Pro softens the throttle response, lets the car coast with the engine at idle when the throttle is released and cycles the air conditioning on and off to reduce the drag on the engine. The driver can select which of those functions is active. I selected the coasting feature and disabled the others. Rolling down Hwy 114 in traffic that was moving well past the speed limit, I averaged 29.1 miles per gallon. One driving excursion was interrupted with several rainstorms, but my average was 28.6 for nearly 500 miles of fast driving. The M235i’s cabin is businesslike. The instrument panel has easy-to-read analog gauges. The sport seats have a wide range of adjustability that makes them a great place to be for hours at a time. Whereas the 1600/2002 had a surprisingly spacious back seat, due mainly to a tall, upright roof, the one in the M235i coupe would be cramped for most adults. The trunk has decent space, and fold-down rear seats give some flexibility for carrying large objects.

Parting Thoughts
The Best Words Brian Mothersole
P
eople often think of being the best at something in terms of absolute lists. Michael Jordan, arguably, is the clearly best basketball player of all time. Star Wars is clearly the best science fiction series ever made, if you exempt the most recent three. My grandmother’s birthday cake is quite clearly the best cake ever made. The thing about these lists is that they often focus on things that can be quantified. Not always, as the last example shows, but often we focus on overall shot percentages or box office tickets and merchandise sold. These lists are absolute, arbitrary things, but they help us establish some order in our own minds and worlds. There is use in that, I think. What is the best Tex-Mex restaurant? Sure, then you’ll know, and you can avoid the lesser ones. If there’s a list of best authors, then sure, I can strive to improve myself. I can better myself. Lists give you motivation, in some external sense. But there are pitfalls to being arbitrary. For one, why the list? What determines the worth of being “the best” at something? Even the best Victorian novel is something that most people would not enjoy reading today. Second, can there really be a best at all things? Looking at things in such a grand way often ignores the beautiful little eccentricities and details that make life wonderful, to those who examine it. To borrow from earlier, the best Tex-Mex may not be in your price range, or there may be parts of its menu that can be outclassed by a rival: a happy hour margarita, or maybe fresher fish tacos. Being “the best” becomes more difficult to judge the longer one examines it. Lists become more nuanced; caveats become obvious the more strenuously you try to justify your claim. 34

As I understand him, Plato believed in a world of forms. There was a perfect form of a tree somewhere, and all earthly representations of that tree were variations, imperfections. That’s an interesting thought, but it’s rather intimidating for a mere mortal such as myself. I cannot be the best human being; I can try, and the usefulness of such an ethos will no doubt be profitable to the world, but in the end, I know I will be disappointed by falling short. Instead, what I have found myself shifting to more and more is recognizing that with my imperfections (or maybe even because of them), I fit the role of “perfect listener” to my colleague when he’s having a rough day, “perfect light-bulb changer” to friends, or “perfect chef” to a tired fiancée. Relationships are often the best way to determine your worth in superlatives. Even if you aren’t the Best, the Most Model Person, you can still be the best person for a certain situation. Dirk Nowitzki may not have the moves of a Kobe or a Jordan, but he is the best at his clutch fall-away awkward jumper. Very few people are the best butchers or bakers, but everyone can be the perfect husband or wife or son or daughter on that crucial day, the person most keenly suited for the role. I’ve found that I am of more use to the world when I harness my imperfections to play perfect roles for specific situations rather than approach life trying to be the Best Human. I harness my idiosyncrasies, so to speak. Absolute perfection is a tall order. I don’t mean to say that one shouldn’t strive to be better, but perhaps consider the ways that you serve as a perfect someone to someone else, and how others, even with their imperfections, play that role for you.
