What Are You Invested In?

This issue is dedicated to "investing"—specifically, in yourself, your home and your community.

In "It Takes a Village" (page 14), we look at the Urban Community of Selah, just south of Norman. Find out why many people are choosing to live and invest in this small but growing community, and how Selah, in return, is making investments to help the community grow and thrive and become a safe and wholesome place to live.

Even if you've never attended a formal concert by the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, it's likely you've been to one of their free concerts at Scissortail Park. Three are offered each summer that feature a blend of classical and popular music. Read about the myriad of ways in which the OKCPHIL is investing in OKC on page 28.

The owner of a local party, concession and balloon store believes graduation (be it from high school, college, or other) represents a major "pay-off" on parents' educational investment in their children. Mara English, owner of Ace Party Supplies & Showtime Concession, says her store offers everything needed to plan for and pull off fabulous graduation parties that will be remembered for years. Of course, they also have what it takes to celebrate birthdays, weddings and other milestones, as well as holidays and special occasions. Read more on page 20.

Finally, you won't want to miss this month's OKC Vibes, where Mel and Lestari enjoyed a fabulous girls' night out at Fogo de Chão, OKC’s sleek new Brazilian steakhouse.

Hope you will "invest" some time in reading this issue. Till next time!

Urban Kitchens Celebrates 25 Years

Urban Kitchens proudly celebrates 25 years of excellence in innovative kitchen and bath design and historic renovation. We have seen all the trends from Tuscan to Shabby Chic to Urban Farmhouse to a return to preserving the historic character of homes nearly a century old.

With rising home prices, a move to aging in place has led owners to renovate the homes they have lived in, many for decades. Opening walls to enlarge tiny kitchens, replacing bathtubs with no threshold walk in showers, widening doorways, and adding master suites are a few of the popular options. Adding drama to bland powder baths with fun wallpaper and bold paint choices is one of our favorite ways to add joy to a home.

Over the years, Urban Kitchens and Bath has built a reputation for outstanding customer service and a commitment to sustainability, ensuring that every project not only meets but exceeds client expectations. As we reflect on our journey, our team looks forward to continuing to inspire and create beautiful, functional spaces for years to come.

SELAH: THE WAY COMMUNITIES WERE ORIGINALLY DESIGNED

It Takes a Village

Images on this page: Selah offers a wide variety of housing options, from townhomes for purchase or lease (Top), to rental properties (Bottom left) to cottages in the woods - as well as condos and estate homes.

Our architects specifically design for New Urbanism communities all over the U.S.

It takes a village to raise a family.

There was a time when home was the heart of a community. Neighbors knew each other by name, and front porches were meant for rocking chairs, sweet tea and conversation that stretched into the evening. Backyards were filled with the smell of barbecue and the sound of laughter. In the summertime, kids ran barefoot through the grass, cooled off in the sprinkler and chased fireflies as the sun faded into the night.

Back in the day, life felt simpler—before schedules stretched past sundown and the world felt a little less familiar.

Yet, in a small but growing community south of Norman, many are discovering that a way of life once thought lost is still within reach.

Located 10 minutes from central Norman, 15 minutes from Newcastle and a half-hour or so from Oklahoma City, the New Urbanism community of Selah “is the way communities were originally designed,” said Kalyn Stropes, director of sales for Selah Realty.

“From the very beginning, Selah’s visionaries and developers, Brett and Tina Adkins, set out to create a community where everyone feels welcome and connected. Many homes feature spacious front porches designed for gathering, while block parties bring neighbors together in a way that feels both natural and timeless.”

The community’s name, Selah, is derived from a Hebrew blessing found in Psalms, focusing on sustainability, agrarian urbanism and community building.

“Selah feels safer for your kids to run around and play in,” Kalyn said, noting that all entry points in Selah are gated.

“Whether you are tucked in the woods in a cottage or have a 2-acre lot with a pool, everyone is able to live life having fun at the amenities our community provides,” she said.

“In Selah, there really is such a wonderful variety of options in housing,” Kalyn said. “We have small condos that reside over commercial space, called “Liveworks”. We also have townhomes that can be purchased or leased.”

Selah is thoughtfully designed into distinct villages, each offering a unique living experience. Cottage Woods and Storybrooke feature charming homes ranging from 900 to 2,000 square feet, while the Sweetwater District offers mid-sized residences between 2,000 and 3,500 square feet. For those seeking more space, The Vineyards and East Ridge boast half-acre lots along Selah’s border or overlooking the vineyards, with Estate Homes ranging from 3,200 to 4,500 square feet.

Estate Homes can also be found in Selah’s Entry District, welcoming residents and guests into the heart of the community.

For those who prefer a custom-built home, The Acres district offers 1- to 2-acre lots, allowing for even larger estate homes with space for a shop. And with future phases already in the works, Selah’s vision continues to grow, offering even more opportunities to find your place in this thoughtfully crafted community.

“We have numerous residents currently living in Selah who purchased their lot and built custom. We have 14 more customs being built this year. The buyer just has to work with our architects and choose a builder from our builders’ guild,” Kalyn noted.

Architecture in Selah “is unlike any other community in Oklahoma,” Kalyn observed. “Our architects specifically design for New Urbanism communities all over the U.S. Our plans provide more windows to provide more natural light, larger islands, hidden pantries or rooms, etc. Our exterior designs are meant to be timeless. We don’t follow trends, we stick to our new urbanism roots to allow our homes to not age’ over time.”

Though Selah is just a short drive from Norman and the greater OKC metro, residents will soon find little need to leave for everyday essentials and conveniences.

The community already features a variety of amenities, including Pryor’s Pizza Kitchen, a family-friendly restaurant with an outdoor playground, pickleball and ping pong, and live music. Sip at Selah, a boutique coffee shop, offers craft coffee, tea and grab-and-go options, while The Reserve at Selah provides an elegant venue for private events and gourmet dinners.

And the community continues to grow—later this year, work will begin on Founder’s Market, a boutique grocery store designed to bring everyday essentials even closer to home. With more additions planned for the future, Selah is shaping into a destination where everything you need is just around the corner.

“A huge misconception about Selah is that you have to have a million dollars to live here,” Kalyn concluded. “That is not true. You may need to rent while you save; we have options for that. You may want to start small and let the equity in your home grow so you can build bigger in a few years; we can set you up for that as well! Selah Homes appreciate at a quicker rate due to the amenities being added to our development. You really cannot go wrong by buying now and getting almost immediate equity!”

‘ACE’ YOUR NEXT CELEBRATORY EVENT

ACE PARTY SUPPLIES & SHOWTIME

CONCESSION: YOUR ONE-STOP-SHOP FOR PLANNING MEMORABLE PARTIES

Parents invest in their children in many ways: providing the staples of life (food, shelter, etc.); their education, including not only their formal education, but also extracurricular activities; insurance; medical and dental care; and so on.

Those investments have both tangible and nontangible “pay offs” … as a parent, your “lists” may differ from others and, indeed, may evolve as baby grows into child, then into teenager, then young adult…

Ace also offers plenty of concession stand supplies.
“We have partnered with many organizations and nonprofits to help support our community and give back to our supporters, and we continue to remind our community to shop local and support small business.”

Parties—celebrations of all sizes and shapes—are one way we celebrate our “investments” milestones. Whether you’re planning for a baby shower, birthday, graduation or other celebratory event, you’re in luck if you live in Cleveland County and Oklahoma City, home to one of this area’s only party, concession and balloon stores.

We asked Mara English, owner of Ace Party Supplies & Showtime Concession (AcePartySupplies.com), to talk a bit about what they have to offer those planning for graduation celebrations, as well as details on the store.

Q.  WE'RE COMING UP ON GRADUATION TIME. WHAT DO YOU OFFER EVENT PLANNERS?

A. We have custom high school-printed items for nine local high schools (Oklahoma City, Moore, Norman and Edmond), and are adding to this list every year! We offer a large selection of graduation party and decor supplies. And we have the ability to create custom balloon decor for graduation ceremonies, parties and celebrations, large or intimate.

Q. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE STORE?

A. ACE stands for 'Always Celebrate Everything,' and I believe there is always something to celebrate! Ace Party Supplies & Showtime

Mara English takes her dogs, Miss Hudson, a silver chocolate lab, and Miss Mina, an American terrier German shepherd mix, with her to the Moore store every day.
“ACE stands for ‘Always Celebrate Everything,’ and I believe there is always something to celebrate!”

Concession has been serving the community since early 2018. We are the Oklahoma City area's largest locally owned, woman-owned party and concession supply store. In our 9,000-square-foot-plus store, you’ll find balloons, birthday supplies, theme parties, and concession equipment and supplies (popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones, nachos, etc). We also carry the largest selection of balloons and offer delivery services throughout the metro. We will even inflate balloons that are brought in or purchased elsewhere.

Additionally, we offer 10% discount days off party supplies (with ID), along with specials on Military and First Responder Mondays, Teacher, Student and Support Staff Tuesdays, and Senior Wednesdays. With the closing of Party City, a lot of families will be wondering where to go locally for party supplies and balloons, and we are here to help in every way we can!

Q. AS THIS IS OUR INVESTMENT ISSUE, COULD YOU TALK ABOUT HOW YOU ARE INVESTED IN THE COMMUNITY?

A. We work very closely with our community, helping schools with everything from popcorn days to spirit weeks. We have give-back programs where we donate up to 25% of sales to organizations

Planning a graduation party for your high school senior? Ace offers custom high school-printed items for nine local high schools.

and nonprofits. Have a local bulletin board in the store to help share announcements and news from industry partners and other small business owners. We have partnered with many organizations and nonprofits to help support our community and give back to our supporters, and we continue to remind our community to shop local and support small business.

Q.  CAN YOU SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND?

A. I’m originally from Oklahoma, moved away as a child and then moved back in 2015. I have always loved being involved in my community and in helping create happy moments. My husband, Mike, and I also own Waters Edge Winery in Moore, and appreciate the opportunity to bring new experiences to our guests and customers.

Q. WHAT, NOT COVERED ABOVE, WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE ABOUT YOURSELF/ THE BUSINESS?

A. Our shop’s success reflects our customers’ successes; we love helping them plan celebrations that will create lasting memories. I’d also like to share a piece of advice for anyone planning a party: Find a theme or a couple decorations that excite you, then plan around those!

MEL & LESTARI’S INSIDER SCOOP TO THE CITY

OKC Vibes

There’s nothing like indulging in food so good and vibes so magnetic that you can’t help but feel fancy, even on a regular weeknight. This time, Lestari and I decided to remind ourselves that a little splurge never hurt anybody. Our grand plan? A girls’ night out at Fogo de Chão, OKC’s sleek new Brazilian steakhouse. Spoiler alert: This wasn’t just a dinner—it was a full-blown event.

After clocking in some major life wins— Lestari crushed her PR duties for the Oklahoma City Ballet’s production of Swan Lake, while I proudly survived teaching life on a Monday (serious victory, folks)—we swapped work mode for glam goddess.

Bring on the bold lipstick, a few hair flips and the ultimate cherry on top—walking into Fogo de Chão and being met with the warmest smile from GM Alcione Fronza Gomes. Oh, and did I mention he welcomed us with their Caipirinha Flight? That instantly won him MVP status for the night.

Talk about starting the night on a high note! That first round of cocktails was the emergency mini-vacation for our taste buds that we very much needed.

SIP & SAVOR - FOGO DE CHÃO

If you’re wondering what to order, here’s what we indulged in—and what you definitely shouldn’t miss.

COCKTAILS

Caipirinha Flight:

Traditional Caipirinha – Silver Cachaça, muddled limes and cane sugar.  Refreshing and zesty, it’s a classic for a reason.

Strawberry Hibiscus – Sweet, floral, bright and oh-so-pretty!

Passion Fruit – Tangy tropical escape in a glass.

STARTERS

Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail – Big, bold and juicy

Grilled White Cheddar Cheese with Malagueta Honey – Sweet & savory cheesy heaven.

Cheesy Rolls (Pão de Queijo) – Soft, dreamy little pillows of cheesy goodness

Crispy Polenta

Caramelized Bananas

MAINS

Grade A5 Australian Wagyu – OMG! THIS WAS THE MOMENT!!! She was absolutely life-changing! Aged for 21 days to perfection, mouthwatering, oh so tender, oh so juicy, oh so smooth, and oh so flavorful! Served atop a sizzling Himalayan salt block.

Full Churrasco Experience (All-you-canmeat extravaganza!):

Picanha – Prime top sirloin with a melt-inyour-mouth crust.

Bone-in Ribeye – Bold, juicy and deeply satisfying.

SIDES

Mashed Potatoes – Creamy and dreamy

DESSERTS

Crème Brûlée (Mel’s go-to) – Crackly sugar topping meets rich vanilla custard. Swoon-worthy.

Tres Leches Cake (Lestari’s pick) – Moist vanilla sponge cake with toasted meringue; it’s what sweet dreams are made of. Key Lime Pie – Tart and refreshing with a graham cracker crust to die for.

By dessert, Lestari and I had officially declared the A5 Australian Wagyu king of the night. Throughout the evening, the energy and warmth of our friendship never changed.  We kept laughing, vowed to keep loving, and finally raised a glass to keep living our best life to the fullest.

But honestly? Fogo feels less like a one-off outing and more like the kind of spot that turns a random Monday into something unforgettable.

Until Next Month!

OKC fam, if you haven’t been yet, this is your sign—gather your foodie besties, order the Wagyu, and toast with a Caipirinha (or three). Trust us, you’ll regret leaving without trying both.

Orchestrating a Vibrant Community Through Memorable Music

The Oklahoma City Philharmonic

OKCPHIL music director Alexander Mickelthwate

The Oklahoma City Philharmonic has been a treasured part of Oklahoma City’s vibrant performing arts community for over 30 years. The organization strives to provide joy and inspiration to the community through its orchestral concerts, educational offerings and community engagement programs.

More than 185,000 people are exposed to orchestral music at performances each year, and over 100,000 students of all ages are served by their educational outreach efforts.

“Our mission pushes us to serve as much of the community as possible,” explains Brent Hart, executive director. “From children to adults, we have programs that are designed to serve a diverse community with differing musical preferences.”

Under the direction of music director Alexander Mickelthwate, the orchestra performs everything from timeless classics to family-friendly tunes. The Classics Series—the orchestra’s signature concerts—feature the works of famous composers as well as contemporary classics. The popular Discovery Family Series offers an array of recognizable and entertaining tunes designed to ignite a love of live music at an early age. The Chickasaw Nation Pops Series attracts a diverse audience, combining the music of well-known artists with orchestral arrangements, vocalists and celebrity guest artists.

In addition, the organization offers three concerts at Scissortail Park each summer that feature a blend of classical and popular music and allow the organization to bring music to the wider community at no cost.

The OKCPHIL partners with local arts organizations, including OKC Ballet and Canterbury Voices, to elevate the thriving arts culture in Oklahoma City. In addition, the musicians of the OKCPHIL are engaged in many aspects of the community, working as professors, teachers, private instructors and performers.

“We are proud to offer

educational programs that are accessible to everyone and concert experiences that rival those in much larger cities.”

“It is hard to fully quantify the impact of an orchestra on the musical landscape of the community,” Brent explains. “We are proud to offer educational programs that are accessible to everyone and concert experiences that rival those in much larger cities.”

The organization’s newest concert experience will take place on Saturday, April 19, at the Civic Center Music Hall. The orchestra will present the world premiere of newly commissioned work, American Indian Symphony, by Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate. The concert coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, and includes Requiem, a musical prayer, followed by Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite, and concludes with American Indian Symphony.

“This is a unique program that will highlight the people, culture and history of our state, and we are honored to be a part of sharing this story with the world,” Brent says.

The OKCPHIL’s educational outreach efforts include concerts for area schools, geared toward upper-elementary students.

These programs expose students to orchestral music and allow them to develop as musicians.

“For most students, our Youth Concerts are their first live concert experience, first orchestral concert, first time to visit Civic Center Music Hall, and first time to learn the sounds of individual instruments within the orchestra,” Brent adds.

“The goal is to inspire students to explore playing an instrument, get involved in their school band or orchestra, and enjoy a lifelong appreciation for music.”

The organization’s Young Musician Competition provides recognition for talented musicians in grades 5-12, and participants compete for prizes and performance opportunities with the OKCPHIL. The Society of Strings program is designed to bring music to adult beginners and those who would like to resume playing an instrument, and includes a performance with the OKCPHIL.

“You’re never too young or too old to learn more about music,” adds Brent. ”It is such an integral part of our lives, and having a strong musical community is a hallmark of a vibrant

and sponsorship opportunities are available, and community members can support the organization through donations and planned giving.

community. Whether you are exploring what to do on the weekend, looking to relocate to OKC, or planning an event, music is often part of the decision.”

The success of the OKCPHIL relies on strong community support, ranging from concert attendees to donors, sponsors, grants and foundations.

Ticket sales cover about one-third of the organization’s annual expenses, with fundraising efforts supporting the remainder of the operating budget.

“Our goal is to keep ticket prices affordable and provide free performances for those who cannot attend ticketed performances,” he adds. “I am incredibly thankful for the donors and community support that allows us to serve the community in this way.”

The OKCPHIL offers numerous ways for the community to support their work in the community. Volunteer

OKC City Lifestyle readers interested in supporting the OKCPHIL may contact Blossom Crews, development director, at blossom@okcphil.org or 405.231.0148.

“If our work in the community resonates with someone, I’d encourage them to reach out to us so we can help them explore ways to become involved and support the OKCPHIL,” Brent concludes. “It is incredibly rewarding to work with a donor to make sure their dollars have the desired impact. It is also rewarding for our staff to hear about the impact our programs make and help others share in those experiences.”

The OKCPHIL would love for Oklahoma City Lifestyle readers to share their favorite performances and memories, as well as feedback about which of the organization’s programs bring them joy.
