More than a community - a home. connecting grapevine, southlake, westlake, trophy club

I

thought I knew this place. I’ve lived here for nearly 20 years, but I have to confess that it is only recently that I’ve come to really know it – it’s places, it’s people, it’s heart, it’s soul. What I knew about my little corner of the DFW ‘burbs you could put in a small box compared to what I’ve learned this past year in my work with OneFourteen Lifestyle. In that short time, I’ve moved outside the comfort zone of the familiar as I’ve sought out the stories of the people, places and events that make this corridor along State Highway 114 such a great place to call home.

I have been immensely rewarded in my meetings with its wonderful people and in getting to know them and understand how they bless this community with their businesses, volunteerism and big hearts. It's rewarding to have a job that leaves you feeling you've made some new friends along the way. In our June issue, we feature some great stories about the people that live among us. You’ll meet Jim Tam, a Southlake resident and businessman, who shares his thoughts on being successful. You’ll also meet Roanoke/Trophy Club’s Arlene Lewis as she shares her story of finding a late-in-life passion for dancing. You’ll get a glimpse into the mission of the Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers club, and you’ll cheer on the kids from BNHS who brought home a national title against all odds. In April, we celebrated our first year of being a part of this community. We appreciate how you’ve embraced us, and we look forward to celebrating our second year with even more stories that reflect the reasons why we make this place our home.

ALEX’S LEMONADE DAYS RETURNS Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a nonprofit dedicated to finding cures for all kids with cancer, invites volunteers across the country to take a stand against childhood cancer when Alex’s Lemonade Days returns June 12-14. ALSF’s National Lemonade Days began in 2004 when Alex Scott set her sights on raising $1 million to fight childhood cancer, including her own. Alex invited volunteers to join her in hosting lemonade stands to help achieve her goal one dollar and one lemonade stand at a time. Through the help of these volunteers, Alex would reach her goal before losing her life to cancer in August 2004. Each June, on the weekend before Father’s Day, supporters everywhere contribute to a cure. For more information and to sign up to host a lemonade stand, visit AlexsLemonade. org/LemonadeDays.

Pets on Parade OUR READERS SHARE ABOUT THEIR PETS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF OUR PETS' FAMILIES

I

n April, we invited readers to share their furry friends with us. Here’s what they had to say about why they are so special. Pippa is a 9-month-old Golden Retriever owned by Drew and Sandra Wilson of Grapevine. Her family says that she is playful, cautious and pleasing in nature, and just a little bit on the shy side for a Golden since they are generally very social by nature. Pippa is also very smart and already well trained for her age. She loves spending time with her family and enjoys traveling with them when the opportunity arises. Prior to Pippa, the family dog was Lucy, also a Golden Retriever. Though she is gone now, she still holds a special place in their hearts and is fondly remembered for her mischievous and curious nature and her devotion to her family for more than 12 years. Baxter is a 7-year-old Havanese owned by the Matheson family of Southlake. Affectionately known as Baxterlicious by his family, he was a gift to Trevor and Sherri's daughter, Athena, on her ninth birthday. Sherri admits that she was completely opposed to having a dog and was determined not to have any responsibility for caring for it, but Baxter had other plans in mind. One day during a nap, he curled up on her chest to rest and stole her heart away. His family says he is friendly, sweet and cuddly and credits him with bringing love and laughter to their home on a daily basis. Baxter also gets pretty special treatment at meal time. He loves bananas for breakfast and chicken, hamburger, apples and more bananas at dinner.

Tzarina is a 7-year-old Maltipoo (Maltese/Poodle) owned by Steve, Christine, Cassie and Jessica Neal of Southlake. Tzarina's family says she is deeply devoted to them. She loves being everywhere that they are and even spent four days in bed with mom, Christine, following her recovery from a surgery. Tzarina is playful and friendly and enjoys greeting guests to their home with a toy. She is incredibly in tune with the family's schedule and will sit in wait when it is time for the girls to return home from school. She is best friends with the family's cat, Scamp, a beautiful long-hair breed. Tzarina's name means princess in Russian, a tribute to Cassie and Jessica's Russian heritage. April Ann is a 6-year-old Chihuahua owned by Dave and Cindy Medanich of Southlake. Cindy says that April Ann's most notable characteristic is her ears and her sensitive hearing. Cindy says, "She can pick up Tokyo with those ears!" April Ann is also a terrific hunter and has been known to ferret out a few moles from the back yard and and has had a tussle with an unsuspecting squirrel. She enjoys being the center of her family's attention now that the kids are grown. Her family believes she and her sister, Millie, bring a richness to their lives through their unconditional love and companionship. Would you like your pet featured in OneFourteen Lifestyle? “Once you start dancing, you’re hooked!” —Arlene Lewis

Arlene Lewis PUTTING ON THE RITZ ARTICLE DEBRA CAFFEY | PHOTOGRAPHY LAURA LYNNE DANIELS

"1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8." I’m sitting in a corner of The Dance Place in Grapevine. Today I’m an observer by invitation of Arlene Lewis. I’d like to stay an observer. I’m terrified that the studio’s owner, Diane, will single me out for my own dance lesson experience. Apparently, she’s known for good-naturedly drawing the reluctant out of the shadows. We’ll see. In the meantiwme, I’m here to see what goes on behind the scenes for the adult students that come here to fulfill one of their life passions – dancing. Some are seasoned veterans and others are novices. Either way, it only takes a few minutes of observation to see that it’s clear they are all having a lot of fun. I’ve been curious about Arlene for several months. Her home was one of several that were on the Trophy Club Women’s Club Christmas Home Tour that I attended in December. It was there that I saw her display of personal dance costumes, shoes and accessories along with a couple of photos of her in competition. My curiosity piqued, I asked around to learn a little more about her hobby. I knew before I left that I would one day have a chat to learn more about her love of dancing. I feel fortunate that she is so willing to share with me and with our readers. She is one of the most delightful people I’ve ever met, and she is eager to draw me in to her recently discovered love of competitive dancing. At 66, she is an enthusiastic fan - so much so that she has given up her golf game to pursue her new passion. She glows when she talks about it. I am surprised again when she tells me that she’s only been dancing for about four years – no training as a child, no love of the dance with her late husband. Instead, she just wanted to experience something new and make new friends. She tells me that she whipped into The

Dance Place in Grapevine one day on a whim and signed up for lessons - the rest is history. It is coincidental that I am catching up with Arlene just as the studio is preparing for their biannual showcase. She and her instructor-partner, Robert Silva, have been working for weeks in preparation for the big night on stage at the Palace Theater in downtown Grapevine. She graciously invites me to sit in on the studio’s dress rehearsal for the big showcase. I’m a bit bummed that I’ll be out of town for the actual show, but I know I’m in for a treat anyway. I am not disappointed. The show begins with a parade of the dancers down the lanes of the performance hall aisles. In keeping with the times, they make their way to the sound of Bruno Mars and his big hit, Uptown Funk. I’m already tapping my toes and smiling. I sit through a variety of tunes old and new and watch each team’s performance leaning forward in my chair. I’m having a great time. The show ends and I’m still tapping my toes and smiling. What I’ve witnessed is similar to the contests that Arlene has participated in over the last couple of years. She has had the opportunity to represent The Dance Studio in several competitions in cities all over the United States as well as Puerto Rico. Arlene dedicates herself to practicing at least three times per week and daily during her preparation for a competition. She says that the workouts are a good form of cardio conditioning and great for improving form and posture - all the while having the time of her life! She lives in Roanoake near her son, his wife and two grandaughters. She is an active member of the Trophy Club Women's Club, enjoys reading and has an extensive collection of Longaberger baskets.

The Dance Place is located at 2150 W. Northwest Highway, Suite 113 in Grapevine. The studio is owned and operated by Diane Korpitz, a Fred Astaire-trained instructor that has been in the ballroom dance business for more than 30 years. The Dance Place specializes in adult dance instruction in ballroom, Latin and country western and offers private and group instruction as well as weekly dance parties for students. Special classes are also available for wedding dance instruction. Diane offers an introductory special to new students. The special includes one private and one group lesson for $30. Visit their website at TheDancePlaceGrapevine.com or call 817.329.5686 for details. June 2015 | OneFourteen Lifestyle

Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers LEAVING A FOOTPRINT ON DFW ARTICLE KATHRYN GLEGHORN | PHOTOGRAPHY DEBRA CAFFEY

L

ake Grapevine Runners and Walkers (LGRAW) has long prided itself on being one of the “best little running clubs in the DFW Metroplex.” LGRAW or RAW, as they are affectionately known, was founded as a running and walking club in 1997 by runners that regularly passed one another on the trails of Lake Grapevine. In the early days, the club members met in the parking lot of Oak Grove Park where Dove Road ends on the shores of the lake, but they eventually had the good fortune of acquiring the use of a nearby abandoned bait shop building as their official clubhouse. If you’ve driven out to Oak Grove Park in Grapevine, you’ve likely seen it. The little red metal building on the left with the “Gro, Bait, LGRAW” sign serves as the meeting place for the club’s weekend run gatherings and home base for their organized runs. In the 18 years since the club’s inception, they have grown from a small group of like-minded runners to a very active club consisting of over 400 members. In addition to their weekend runs, the club hosts two annual races, Double Trouble 5K and 10K and Bold in the Cold 5K and 15K. The races have grown in popularity and are favorite running events among locals. But the club’s purpose goes beyond supporting one another in their pursuit of

14

OneFourteen Lifestyle | June 2015

healthy lifestyles and training goals. It has long been involved in Grapevine and surrounding communities by hosting races that benefit GRACE (Grapevine Relief and Community Exchange). Most recently the club donated $2,500 to GRACE to help the organization get back on its feet following a fire at the Donation Station. In addition to the club funds that were donated, RAW members collectively donated another $5,000 of their personal monies. Since the weekend club runs are run on routes that go along closed park roads and Horseshoe Trail in Oak Grove Park, RAW also participates in two Keep Grapevine Beautiful trail clean ups each year, and members volunteer their time to keep the trails maintained and properly marked. RAW also believes in giving back to the sport, and they do so by volunteering at area races. Members give their time in support of the Dallas Marathon, the Dallas Athlete’s Wounded Warrior 5K/10K and the North Texas Trail Runners Grasslands Trail Race. RAW has also donated money to support youth running programs through gifts to the Road Runners Club of America - Kids Run the Nation, Girls on the Run DFW Metroplex, and various other sponsorships that promote running and walking as part of a healthy lifestyle.

LGRAW meets every weekend, rain or shine, at 7 a.m. at the clubhouse located at 2615 Dove Loop Road in Grapevine. Most weekends you will find 20-30 folks ready to run or walk the designated course. Runners and walkers of every fitness level are welcome to join RAW for a weekend workout. RAW volunteers also set out water and sports drink on the course to help ensure everyone stays hydrated. Annual membership fees are very reasonable at $20 for individuals and $30 for families, but membership is not required to visit or check out a few group runs. To visit LGRAW’s website, go to LGRAW.com or you can find them on Facebook as Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers.

Hooks Lincoln EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE

H

ere in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, we often go out of our way to find the extraordinary. We don’t give much thought to driving a half hour or more to enjoy our favorite restaurant, shopping or entertainment. And, that’s just what the folks at Hooks Lincoln in West Fort Worth are hoping you will do the next time you are in the market to service your existing Lincoln or to purchase your next new car. Dennis Hooks and his sons, Kip and Kory, know that you have a choice when it comes to your car service and purchases, and they invite you to come out to experience the Hooks Lincoln difference. "We're in the luxury car and people business. We want you to enjoy your car-buying and service experience. We provide upscale, Texas-sized hospitality," states Dennis. Hooks Lincoln is a local luxury dealership that has been family-owned and operated for more than 30 years. As owner and founder, Dennis first began in the auto sales industry in 1967 when he joined his father to work at a Fort Worth Chevrolet dealership. Several years later, they moved to Granbury where he and his brother worked together in his father’s Ford dealership there until his dad retired. In 1981, he moved a bit to the west of Fort Worth and opened his own Lincoln dealership in Weatherford. He eventually expanded to a larger location in Hudson Oaks, an area off Interstate 30 in Parker County near Weatherford. Hooks Lincoln remained located in that area for nearly 30 years before being asked to relocate to west Fort Worth by The Lincoln Motor Company in 2014. In the time since 1981, Hooks Lincoln has maintained a reputation for its service-oriented care. All these years later, that reputation still stands and continues to grow. The dealership has been recognized with the Ford Motor Company President’s Award for the highest level of customer satisfaction in sales and service. And, if reviews are any indication, Hooks Lincoln is a favorite among its customers for their friendliness, knowledge, attentiveness, and service-drawing them in from all over the Metroplex to take advantage of the kind of old-fashioned business practices that seem such a rare commodity in today's world. It’s a family-owned dealership, and it shows in how they treat everyone like family," says Ashley Speaker. The dealership takes pride in its family-owned/family-operated legacy and its dedication to supporting the community where they have made their home for so long. Dennis Hooks has proudly served in many capacities in the city of Weatherford in the time since he first called it home. In addition to his role with his business, he currently serves Weatherford as its mayor, a position that he has held since 2008. In prior years, he also served the city council for a term of six years. Hooks is also a founding member, past president and current member of the Weatherford ISD Education Foundation, a past member of the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, a past ambassador of the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce, and a winner of the 2009 James Doss Award for displaying the qualities of a community leader through philanthropic activities and principled business practices. Hooks Lincoln is a member of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association, the National Automobile Dealers Association, the Tarrant County New Car Dealers Association, the Weatherford New Car Dealers Association and is a former member of the Lincoln Mercury Dealers Advisory Board. The premier dealership is located at 8900 West Freeway in Fort Worth. June 2015 | OneFourteen Lifestyle

They conduct market research, work cooperatively to develop and write a business plan, design and implement an e-commerce website, pay wages and taxes, maintain 401(k) plans, and develop an annual report at the end of the year. Through all of the activities, the VEI students learn professionalism, business acumen, corporate knowledge, presentation skills and teamer Offic l a i work. In addition, the experiences of c an y, Fin e l k a trade across industries, borders and Be D rew cultures contribute to students’ development of hands-on knowledge of the expectations of the workplace and the global economy. The group of BNHS students has been working all year toward this goal through the formation of their own small business, an organic tea brewery called Life’s PURiTEA. The company is a socially responl a i sible, organic tea company that feaSoc ong, s d r i tures eight tea flavors. The teas are er yB E m i l M a n ag ia d e formulated with organic, non-GMO, Fair M Trade Certified, gluten-free and kosher ingredients, and they are sweetened with natural honey. The product is sold in the VEI Wholesale Marketplace to more than 5,000 other firms across the globe through the company website, VE-Puritea.com. Several members of the BNHS Business Academy VEI team have been awarded partial and full scholarships based on their participation and performance in the program.

The Academy of Business Management and Entrepreneurship at NISD will consist of state-of-theart business facilities and resources housed in 33,000 square feet of space on the new campus. Students will have the opportunity to learn about finance, accounting, human resources, marketing, sales, promotions, advertising, management, business law, logistics, business ethics and entrepreneurship. Their experiences will encompass how to start, run and one day sell their own business. The program will include the opportunity to earn several business certifications within the context of the high school program, which begins at the freshman level. A visit with Jim Tam

M

eet Jim Tam. Tam is the division vice president of sales, central division, for The Hertz Corporation. Prior to working for Hertz, he spent 16 years with Citigroup and 5 years with 20/20 Companies. A native of New York, he attained a double major in finance and international business from New York University and an MBA in management from Dowling College. He and his wife, Dia, have lived in Southlake for 10 years along with their three children and his mother-in-law, Katsuko. OneFourteen Lifestyle visited him recently in his Dallas-Fort Worth Airport office and asked him to share a few thoughts on success with us. OFL: What do you think are the personal characteristics that have most contributed to your success in the workplace? TAM: I believe in a strong work ethic. You will always find somebody out there that is smarter and better educated than you, but nobody should be able to say they can outwork you. You have total control over that. I also believe you have to talk to people. You rarely see people talking to each other anymore. You can see 10 people in a line at Starbucks, and it’s likely that all 10 are looking at their phones. They don’t talk to the person in front of them. You have to talk to people. Talking to people develops confidence and communication skills that will help you later on in business. I know we all rely on technology such as texting and emails as means of communication, but 5,000 years from now you are still going to need to talk to people if you are to do business with them. OFL: What do you look for in others when you are hiring to build your team? TAM: I look for people who have demonstrated that they are not afraid to get their nails dirty – people who will be in the trenches with you when it all goes south. I also look for people who are likeable, trustworthy and have strong intellectual horsepower. I want someone that adds value and brings new ideas to the table. You can always teach

people technical skills, but it’s tougher to teach them work ethic or how to be likeable or to be creative thinkers. They must bring that to the party themselves. OFL: What do you believe are the qualities of being a great leader? TAM: I believe a leader must lead from the front-especially in sales. I have pictures and statues of wolves in my office as a constant reminder of that. Wolves hunt as a team and the alpha male hunts along with the rest of the pack. I enjoying going on sales calls with my team and meeting with customers and potential customers. I want my team to see that I’m not asking them to do anything that I’m not willing to do, and if we win or lose a deal, we do it together. OFL: Understanding the significance of the wolves, I assume that the poster of pigs swimming in the ocean serves as another leadership reminder. Tell us about that. TAM: (Laughing) In the Bahamas, legend has it that there was a pirate ship that put a whole bunch of pigs in the water to see if

SEEING SUCCESS THROUGH DIFFERENT EYES

Merriam-Webster defines success as “the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect or fame” and the Oxford Dictionary defines it as “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.” Well-known poet, Maya Angelo, said, “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” Winston Churchill maintained success was “going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.” Obviously, our perceptions and definitions of success come in many shapes and sizes, and we all have different measuring sticks by which we define our own successes and how we get there. Our OneFourteen Lifestyle community is home to many successful people. Join us over the next few months as we take a look at it's many faces through area residents willing to share their thoughts on the matter. 18

they would survive on the islands. There’s not a lot of great vegetation on the islands, even for pigs, so over time in order to survive, the pigs have had to learn how to go into the ocean and catch fish and forage other things in the ocean. So this picture of this pig in water reminds me that to continue to be successful in whatever we do that we need to continuously adapt. If you continue to think that you are great with what you have done and that you don’t need to change, then you are going to become obsolete. Just because I was successful five years ago, doesn’t mean the formula for success has stayed the same. I can’t keep doing the same old thing all the time. I must evolve with the changing times in order to stay relevant. I need to reinvent myself all the time. I can’t keep subscribing to the ideas that once worked. I have to keep up with the new generation of thinking and technology. OFL: What would you most like people to know about you? TAM: I love to laugh and enjoy making others laugh with me. You can take your job seriously, but you can’t take yourself too seriously. I enjoy being around positive people with a high energy level. I love having fun wherever I am, and hopefully I can inspire a few people to laugh with me.

First Families in Crisis Arrive at The Gatehouse SUPPORTIVE LIVING COMMUNITY HOSTS GOV. GREG ABBOTT AS KEYNOTE AT OPENING CEREMONY ARTICLE CRISTEN HIXSON, GATEHOUSE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

G

atehouse’s first move-in day was filled with tears and laughter, disbelief and joy as the first women and their children arrived at The Gatehouse community in Grapevine to see their brand-new apartments generously set-up and personalized into homes by volunteers and filled with new furniture and every supply needed from donors. “I wish everyone who has worked at creating The Gatehouse during the past couple years could have seen and heard what I did when the women and children moved in,” says Deborah Lyons, executive director at The Gatehouse. “It gave me a chill of excitement. This is what we’re here for, this is what it’s all about.” There are now 18 families living and healing at The Gatehouse, a supportive living community in Grapevine where women and their children in crisis receive safe refuge, ample time, practical resources and healthy relationships to discover new paths for permanent change. “Children lives are changing because they are no longer afraid for their mom’s safety. Women are free, no longer bound by barriers,”

says Nanayetta Simmons, lead advisor for Gatehouse members. “One member’s daughter fell asleep for the first time in a year without crying. The transformations taking place so far have been amazing.” Lyons says working with the women and watching them grow in just their first few weeks and months after arriving has been remarkable. “All of women came in with self-doubt, feeling wounded, unworthy, helpless — they lacked hope for the future,” Lyons says. “With something as simple as having a home address, a couple of the women had the stability and confidence they needed to find employment within days and weeks after arriving.” The three major barriers to women becoming self-supportive are housing, transportation and childcare. As part of Gatehouse’s faithbased Independent Life Program, where the women can stay for up to 2 and a half years depending on their individually tailored program, members are offered housing, transportation, child care, food, clothing, education, employment guidance, medical care, counseling and life skills mentoring, all without government funding.

IMMEDIATE NEEDS Child Care Child care costs nearly $10,000 a year in this area for each child. Consider a donation to help offset this staggering cost. “The Gatehouse is a place and a program where we anxiously wait to see women end cycles of domestic violence and helplessness for themselves and their children,” says Lisa Rose, Gatehouse founder and board president. “It's truly a privilege to get to create, sustain and develop this community for women and their children who desperately need a hand up for permanent, positive change." Area residents — who have made welcome baskets and quilts, donated clothes and toys, financially adopted families and apartments and spent countless hours cleaning and preparing apartments — are streaming in to volunteer and help prepare and support incoming women and their children. “Volunteer spots to set-up apartments filled within minutes, they were all so eager to help these families," says Kim Taylor, Gatehouse community engagement director. "The apartments were set up with such love and care that the members commented on all the special details.” After breaking ground in June 2013 on the 61 acres adjacent to DFW airport, the first phase of construction took most of 2014 to complete The Washington Community Education Center, first neighbor-

hood, first advisor center, general store and Keeps Boutique. The three other neighborhoods, second Advisors Center, Hope Chapel and commercial strip will continue being built this year. The Gatehouse celebrated its grand opening with a ceremony March 26, with support from area mayors Betsy Price, Bob Rawlings and William D. Tate, as well as with Texas Governor Greg Abbott as keynote speaker. “The Gatehouse in Grapevine is an example of the vital role our communities play in fighting domestic violence,” Abbott says. With eight more families expected to move in during June and 96 apartments total across the four neighborhoods, there will be a steady influx of families arriving throughout the next year. “The energy has been over the top,” Rose says. “What a great way to introduce The Gatehouse to the community and with such outstanding local support. We can’t wait to share what happens next.”

f you’re looking for a fun way to spend an afternoon or evening with friends, Grapevine Wine Tours is a great way to go. We recently had the good fortune of receiving an invitation from them to share in a lunch tour experience that included stops at Messina Hof Winery and Sloan & Williams Winery for tastings and Farina’s Winery for a delicious lunch. Without question, we give it a two-thumbs-up rating. We enjoyed a tasting of up to five of Messina Hof’s award-winning Texas wines (depending on the level of selections that you choose), a three-course lunch of our choice with a wine or frozen sangria drink option, a few minutes of shopping along historic downtown Grapevine’s quaint Main Street, and a final stop at Sloan & Williams where we tasted several more wine selections and were treated with a taste of their specialty ice creams made with their wines. Grapevine Wine Tours operates 25-passenger luxury buses that pick up at several

area hotels for a choice of tours in Grapevine or Dallas, with a professional tour guide that is knowledgeable in the history of the towns and willing to share interesting tidbits of local lore and trivia as you travel between destinations. Each four-hour tour includes stops at three wine-themed establishments rotating between multiple venues throughout the city to ensure that each tour provides a unique and fun experience. Grapevine tours offer a lunch or dinner stop, and Dallas tours include appetizer selections at each stop. The experience is a great choice for birthday and anniversary celebrations, conventions excursions, corporate outings, bachelorette parties, girl’s nights out or a special date night with your best guy or girl. Parting Thoughts

Daddy's Girl WORDS CATHY O'NEAL

W

hen you're a female born and raised in Texas, chances are you call your father "Daddy." One of the earliest memories I have of my Daddy was when my little sister was born. That was back in the olden days when having a baby meant new moms stayed in the hospital for a few days, there were strict "visiting hours," and children were not allowed to visit--no matter what time it was. My mom was in the hospital with my new sister, leaving me and Daddy and my uncle to our own devices. I don't remember why, but the two guys brought home the cutest baby goat you have ever seen. To keep it from running around the house, Daddy and my uncle turned my baby sister's crib upside down to contain it. I remember thinking I would much rather keep the goat and pass on the sister who was due to arrive. Playing with a baby goat the night before my world changed was the perfect thing, whether my Daddy planned it that way or not. That memory pretty much sums up my Daddy. Fun just sort of happened with him. He was easy-going and personable with a quick sense of humor. Everyone liked him instantly. I don't remember anyone who didn't like my Daddy. Christmas was a blast because he was worse than any child. It was Daddy who instigated the traditional shaking of the presents 26

OneFourteen Lifestyle | June 2015

to try and guess what was inside. Every year, he tried to bribe me with cash to tell me what he was getting. Of course, I miss Daddy whenever Father's Day rolls around. But it's Christmas when I miss him the most--Christmas and my birthday. With birthdays just two days apart, we celebrated together every year for 37 years. I've written many things about my relationship with my mother, which was troubled, a source of self-doubt and the driving force behind visits to more than one therapist. What a lucky little girl and woman I was to have a Daddy who provided a respite from that turmoil. We were pals, cohorts, sidekicks and partners in mischief making. I'm thankful for that. I remember Daddy bringing home a gerbil that was the meanest rodent that ever lived. It would hiss and try to bite me even when I was feeding her. I named her Maxine (which was my mother's name). My father thought that was hysterically funny. My mother wasn't amused. My son will be a daddy this month for the first time with twin daughters. I hope they're daddy's girls and have as much fun as my Daddy and I did. As for this Daddy's girl, I'll think of my Daddy with love and a chuckle on Father's Day, just like I have for the last 23 father's days. Somehow I'm certain he knows that I'm doing fine, still miss him every day, and still proud to be a daddy's girl.
