The Heart of the Season

Dear Readers,

February invites us to pause and reflect on the essence of love—not just the grand gestures or fleeting moments, but the quiet undercurrent that shapes our lives. Love, after all, is not confined to roses or candlelight; it’s in the way we care for one another, the way we tend to what matters, and the way we open our hearts to connection.

Love, in its truest form, is transformative. It’s in the strength of a community rallying for a cause, as we’ll soon see at the Palm Beach Heart Ball, where the elegance of the evening is matched only by the power of its purpose. It’s in the soft petal of a flower from Belden’s Florist, carefully chosen to say what words cannot. And it’s in the joyful wag of a tail after a visit to Onblonde Pet Spa, reminding us that love knows no boundaries—not species, nor scale.

The beauty of love is also found in the rituals we create. Perhaps it’s in the kitchen, using a recipe shared by Wellthy’s Erin Murphy in this very issue—an approachable and nourishing way to make wellness part of your day. Or it’s in the simple act of sitting down together, turning off our phones and setting aside the rush of the day in order to truly be present with one another.

Sometimes, love begins with the courage to start something new—like suggesting a first date at Common Grounds in West Palm Beach. What begins as a single coffee shared might grow into a cherished tradition, a mutual moment in life’s busy rhythm to unwind, together.

But more than action, love is a state of being. It’s in how we see the world, with eyes that notice beauty and hearts that embrace imperfection. It’s in choosing connection over isolation, compassion over judgment, and gratitude over longing.

This Valentine’s season, let us celebrate love in all its forms: the romantic, yes, but also the enduring, the surprising, and the everyday. Because love, at its core, is what binds us to one another and makes the journey worthwhile.

From all of us at Palm Beach City Lifestyle, may your February be filled with love’s many shades—soft, bold, enduring, and true.

With heart,

February 2025

The Evolution of Romance

From Grand Gestures to Coffee’s Simple Charm

Ah, love—the eternal muse. Across centuries, it has inspired poets, painters, and dreamers alike. Yet, the way we express our yearning for connection has evolved, just as society itself has transformed. From the structured courtships of yesteryear to the serendipitous encounters of modern life, romance has found new ways to flourish. And today, perhaps nowhere is this evolution more beautifully captured than in the quiet simplicity of a first date over coffee.

LOVE THROUGH THE AGES

Not so long ago, romance was a symphony of grand gestures and carefully orchestrated encounters. In the parlors of Victorian homes, suitors arrived bearing flowers and the heavy weight of expectation. Courtship was a family affair, with the aim of forging alliances that transcended mere affection.

By the early 20th century, love began to loosen its corset. The Jazz Age gave us the thrill of the dance floor, the sparkle of candlelit suppers, and the idea that love could be an adventure. By the 1950s, the “steady relationship” became the gold standard, and dates—whether at the drive-in or a cozy diner— were cherished rituals of connection. Over time, the pendulum swung from structured expectations to the exhilarating freedom of today, where love is a canvas painted with infinite possibilities.

THE BEAUTY OF THE COFFEE DATE

Today, the modern first date often unfolds in a setting as unassuming as it is inviting: the coffee shop. Its charm lies in simplicity—no pretense, no

elaborate setup. Just two people meeting on neutral ground, letting conversation and connection flow naturally.

It’s no surprise that coffee shops have become the top choice for first dates. A survey by the mobile dating app Clover found that more than half of women prefer coffee shops for an initial meeting, appreciating their unhurried pace and approachable vibe. This sentiment isn’t new; a 2013 Match. com article revealed that 81% of singles considered coffeehouses a foolproof first date option.

Justin Olive, the operating owner of Common Grounds Coffee in West Palm Beach, has witnessed this trend firsthand. “Having my shops for 10 years now, I’ve seen a lot of first dates,” he shares. “I think people choose coffee shops because it’s the perfect mix of casual and intimate. Coffee shops create a relaxed atmosphere where there’s no pressure—just good conversation over a cup of something warm and comforting.”

At Common Grounds, many first-daters gravitate toward the Café Miel, a velvety latte with melted honey and a hint of cinnamon. Paired with a freshly

baked pastry or a slice of their signature quiche, it’s a perfect way to savor the moment. A corner table, a couple of oversized armchairs, and the inviting aroma of freshly brewed coffee set the scene for a spark to catch.

A RITUAL FOR THE AGES

For those who appreciate the finer things, the coffee date offers a distinctive allure. Whether it’s a leisurely morning meeting or a quiet afternoon escape to a chic spot like Common Grounds, there’s a unique magic to be found. The gentle hum of espresso machines, soft murmurs of

conversation, and the warm aroma of freshly brewed coffee create an atmosphere where moments feel effortless and inviting.

THE TIMELESS APPEAL OF CONNECTION

Love is rarely loud. It whispers in the subtle glances shared across a room or the quiet pauses that make time feel suspended. Once, such moments unfolded in the glow of candlelit parlors; today, they bloom in the soft, inviting warmth of a coffee shop. And it’s in these understated beginnings, free of pretense, that the most beautiful stories often take root.

IN FUL L BLOOM

“PICK

A FLOWER ON EARTH AND YOU MOVE THE FARTHEST STAR.” ― PAUL

A.M.

DIRAC

When you step into Belden’s Florist, you can feel the history in its walls. Since 1906, this West Palm Beach institution has been creating beauty from nature’s most delicate offerings. But what truly makes Belden’s stand apart isn’t its century-old legacy—it’s the heart and soul behind it, embodied by its owner, Armine Mnatsakanian.

Armine’s connection to flowers goes beyond arranging petals. For her, flowers are storytellers, each bloom and color holding the potential to express emotions words cannot. “I’ve always believed flowers can say what we sometimes can’t,” Armine shares. “They bring comfort, joy, and love, but they also carry unspoken messages.”

Her love affair with flowers began in her childhood, where she watched gardens bloom into palettes of color, sparking a creative curiosity that grew into a lifelong passion. Now at the helm of Belden’s Florist, she leads with the same authenticity and care she puts into each bouquet. “It’s about more than just making something pretty—it’s about creating something meaningful,” she says.

Armine’s genuine approach extends to how she connects with her customers. She listens intently, drawing out the story they want to tell—whether it’s a romantic gesture, a heartfelt apology, or a way to brighten someone’s day. Under her guidance, Belden’s Florist has elevated floral arrangements for a variety of life’s most meaningful moments—from weddings and charitable galas to intimate birthday celebrations and captivating installations. Her designs are thoughtful, deeply personal, and infused with artistry.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, Armine knows the pressure of finding the perfect bouquet. “Flowers aren’t

just gifts—they’re symbols of our feelings,” she says. Here, she shares her guide to choosing blooms that speak for you, tailored to every relationship and emotion.

THE ROMANTIC GESTURE: TULIPS AND PEONIES

“While roses are iconic, tulips and peonies are beautiful, romantic alternatives,” says Armine. “Red tulips symbolize deep love and passion, while pink tulips convey care and affection. Peonies, with their lush, soft blooms, represent romance, prosperity, and good fortune, making them an unforgettable choice for someone special.”

FOR DEEP DEVOTION: ORCHIDS

Orchids are exotic and luxurious, making them perfect for someone who holds a special place in your heart. “Orchids symbolize love, beauty, and strength,” Armine explains. “They’re ideal for long-term relationships where the connection is unique and enduring.”

BRIGHTEN A FRIEND’S DAY: YELLOW ROSES OR DAFFODILS

“Yellow roses and daffodils are perfect for celebrating friendship,” Armine shares. “Yellow roses symbolize joy and warmth, while daffodils represent renewal and happiness. Together, they create a cheerful and uplifting bouquet for someone special.”

A SUBTLE MESSAGE: GARDENIAS

For a flower that exudes elegance and meaning, Armine suggests gardenias. “Gardenias symbolize purity, secret love, and trust,” she shares. Their pristine white petals and intoxicating fragrance make them a timeless choice for heartfelt emotions.

FOR A SWEET GESTURE: ANEMONES

“Anemones are delicate and charming, making them perfect for a thoughtful gesture,” Armine shares. “They symbolize anticipation and protection, adding a touch of whimsy and meaning to any bouquet. Their vibrant colors create a sweet, memorable gift.”

A BOLD STATEMENT: RED ROSES, WHITE GARDEN ROSES, AND PINK ROSES

For a truly striking and meaningful bouquet, Armine suggests a combination of red roses, white garden roses, and pink roses. “Red roses embody passion and enduring love, while white garden roses symbolize sincerity,” she explains. “Paired with pink roses, which convey gratitude, the arrangement becomes a bold and layered expression of emotion. It’s perfect for someone who holds a multifaceted place in your heart.”

ELEGANT SIMPLICITY: CALLA LILIES

“Calla lilies are timeless and sophisticated,” states Armine. “They symbolize elegance and beauty and are a fantastic choice for expressing admiration in a refined way.”

PLAYFUL AND FUN: RANUNCULUS

Ranunculus, with their layered petals and vibrant colors, are ideal for someone who makes life feel more colorful. “They represent charm and radiance,” Armine explains. “They’re great for new relationships or expressing affection in a lighthearted way.”

FLOWER POWER

For Armine, Valentine’s Day is more than a celebration of romance. “It’s a day to honor all the important people in your life—partners, friends, family, and even yourself,” she says. “Flowers have the power to speak to all of those relationships in a way that feels personal and meaningful.”

She finds beauty in how flowers can convey emotions through thoughtful details. “Every color tells a story through its symbolism,” Armine reminds us. She also loves exploring unique pairings to create unexpected combinations. “Gardenias paired with white roses bring a sense of purity and timeless elegance, while bold anemones mixed with soft ranunculus create a playful yet balanced arrangement,” she shares. “Each pairing can transform a bouquet into something truly one-of-a-kind and it’s those small nuances that make each arrangement special.”

But the true joy of her work will always lie in its impact on others. “I love knowing that a bouquet I’ve designed might make someone smile, spark a memory, or even strengthen a bond,” Armine says. “It’s a privilege to be part of those moments.”

PAWS, LOVE AND Gentle Care

The Heart of Onblonde Pet Spa
ARTICLE BY ARSINE KALOUSTIAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DENISE DELAUNAY-WOOD

In the heart of the Palm Beaches, Onblonde Pet Spa isn’t just a place for grooming—it’s a sanctuary rooted in love, resilience, and connection. At its helm is Alyce Riedesel, whose personal journey through profound loss has deeply influenced her approach to pet care. Here, every dog is treated with unparalleled compassion, and every detail tells a story.

Alyce’s path to creating this unique space began in February 2011, when her husband, Eric, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of kidney cancer. With three young children, Alyce faced not only the emotional weight of the diagnosis but the practical realities of caregiving. In their time of need, her family embarked on a heartfelt project to create a "comfort quilt" for Eric—a tapestry of love adorned with signatures and messages from friends, family, and even celebrities. The quilt became a powerful symbol of compassion and connection, wrapped around Eric during his final days. He passed away in January 2012, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and love that continues to inspire Alyce in all she does.

This dedication to creating something meaningful is evident in every corner of the spa. Alyce believes that spaces and objects carry energy, and she has curated the environment to reflect this philosophy. A vintage Indonesian food cart, now laden with colorful dog toys, welcomes visitors. Overhead, a 1920s chandelier dangles from industrial rafters, casting a warm glow. An armoire that once belonged to Elizabeth Taylor serves as an opulent display case for premium dog foods. And the heart of it all? A front desk that was once Al Capone’s home bar, now repurposed into a centerpiece of hospitality.

Behind this storied desk, you’ll often find Alyce sitting crosslegged in her chair, radiating warmth and approachability. For Alyce,

the work goes far beyond grooming. “I get so much peace and joy seeing an owner’s vision come to life,” she shares. “It’s not just about the dogs—it’s about creating a space where they feel loved and their owners feel at home.”

This philosophy is reflected in every aspect of her business. “It’s never about the numbers,” Alyce states firmly. “Could we groom more dogs in a day? Sure. But that’s not what matters. It’s about ensuring every dog receives exceptional care and every owner feels confident their pet is in the best hands.”

Her journey has taught her that even the smallest acts of kindness can have profound impacts. “I’m their advocate,” she explains. “Dogs can’t tell us how they feel with words, but they show us. It’s my job to listen and make them feel safe.” She extends this outlook to every interaction she has with her four-legged clients, every detail reflecting her unwavering care and commitment.

When you step into this unassuming corner of Old Historic Northwood, you feel it immediately—that quiet, unspoken magic that comes from a place built with intention and love. Maybe it’s the way Alyce greets a nervous pup, or the way a wagging tail seems to say thank you as it walks out the door. It’s the feeling that here, every dog is seen, every story matters, and every moment is cherished. This is more than grooming—it’s a haven where dogs feel safe, loved, and a little more whole—and maybe, where their humans do, too.
