A penny saved is a penny earned.
The exact origin of this old saying may be unknown, with its roots tracing back to the 1600s, however Benjamin Franklin’s 1758 almanac entry of “a penny saved is a penny got” is likely why it is so well known in America today.
The idea here is that a penny saved is just as useful as earning another penny, and by doing so we can create greater prosperity down the road. However, this saying misses a key element, and that element is the focus of this issue: investment.
There is a big difference between saving and investing. Saving is passive. Investing is active. And this involves more than money management. We can save time, but what’s more important is what we do with that time. With our current medical advances, you can argue that we can “save” our health in many ways, yet investing in our health is the better option.
So here we go, let’s focus on investment this month! We have stories ranging from investing in our health to investing in the environment and even investing in our home, community, and small businesses. But we hope this is just the launching pad that encourages you to make a conscious investment in some way this month.
Maybe for you, it is investing in your health. Maybe it is investing in education to learn something new. Maybe it is investing in a home project you have been putting off for a while. Maybe it is investing time with a family member or a friend who is overdue for a good chat. Maybe it is investing in the environment or the community. Maybe it is making a financial investment.
I want to learn to play the piano, so I am investing some time in learning something new.
We will each have our own answer…the question is, will we save it for later or will we choose to invest, today?

Warmer weather means more time outside and more exposure to parasites. Hookworms, roundworms, and other gastrointestinal parasites thrive in parks, soil, and on sidewalks, making their way into your home on your shoes and your pet’s paws. Even indoor pets can be at risk. Year-round parasite prevention keeps your pets safe, stopping parasites before they spread to you and your family. EXPERIENCE TREES, HISTORY, AND ADVENTURE AT ARBOR DAY FARM
“Our mission is to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees.”
Arbor Day 2025 is set for Friday, April 25, and there’s no better place to celebrate than where it all began! Nebraska City’s Arbor Day Farm offers visitors and enthusiasts many ways to appreciate trees.
“Really and truly, we’re celebrating all across the property,” says Rachel Hrabik, marketing manager of the Arbor Day Farm. With multiple attractions, there is something for everyone to celebrate. For instance, Hrabik highlights the Arbor Lodge Mansion. The mansion has more than 52 rooms to experience, with more than 50 acres of nature to explore outside.
“We encourage all guests to come and enjoy free entry to the historic site and
explore the grounds—to get out and enjoy nature, immerse themselves in trees,” Hrabik says.
For those seeking a more thrilling experience, Hrabik points to the Tree Adventure. Fit for people of all ages, guests can explore eleven different treehouses, connected by suspension bridges and the WonderNet, which Hrabik describes as a massive trampoline.
“If you want to feel like you’re in the forest and treetops, that’s the place to go,” she says. “Kids and adults are having the time of their lives!”
For those wanting to extend the celebration, Hrabik recommends the Lied
Lodge hotel as the perfect overnight retreat, weekend getaway, or more. The hotel offers a pool and hot tub, a full-service spa, and Timbers, an onsite restaurant.
In all their celebration, Hrabik says the heart of it all is to encourage people to reflect and engage with nature. “Our mission is to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees.”
And with miles and miles of trees to explore, it is not hard to do.
“People lose themselves in that space and don’t even realize they’re in Nebraska City anymore.”
As easy as it is to get lost in nature, Hrabik hopes guests will take a piece of it home— whether by planting trees or embracing green spaces in their own communities.
Hrabik encourages those interested in learning more about Arbor Day, the Arbor Day Farm, and its many celebrations to visit www.arbordayfarm.org
One of this year’s Arbor Day highlights will be Bloom Fest, which will offer tours showcasing Nebraska’s largest collection of lilacs including more than 250 varieties.
“Two members of the International Lilac Society have volunteered their time not only to clean up our lilacs but to go through and identify each variety,” Hrabik says. These experts will be offering free tours throughout Arbor Day weekend in addition to educational sessions and workshops.
Hrabik recommends readers keep an eye on arbordayfarm.org for further updates on Bloom Fest and other festivities in the days leading up to April 25.
Celebrate Arbor Day, April 25-27, where it all began—Arbor Day Farm! Enjoy a weekend of nature-inspired activities, family fun, and tree-filled traditions. Make it a getaway with an overnight stay at Lied Lodge. Visit arbordayfarm.org for details and reservations.

Fresh Wisconsin cheeses and more in the heart of Papillion
Chris Evitch came to Nebraska years ago for a temporary job laying fiber. Once the job ended, he returned to his native Wisconsin. When a second job brought him back, he stayed and married Darleene, whose family came to Papillion through the military. Thirty-six years later, Chris, Darleene, and their son, Broc, are invested members of the Papillion community.
Through the years, they often traveled back to Wisconsin to visit family. As they drove around the state, they began stopping to chat with local cheesemakers. Chris knew the best cheeses weren’t always sold in stores. Often, they came directly from the creamery, where cheesemakers were experimenting with flavors and textures.
Chris’s reputation as a cheesemonger grew, and people started asking him to bring home fresh Wisconsin cheese. On one vacation, he and Darleene brought more than twenty bags of cheese home!
In 2014, a small building became available along 84th Street in downtown Papillion. The Evitch family decided to transform it into an authentic Northwoods Cheese Haus, the first of its kind in Nebraska. They brought native lumber from Wisconsin to cover the floor and walls. They used the same lumber to build a counter and create the egg-basket chandelier that hangs above it.
The Evitch family continues to search for interesting cheeses, sausages, and specialty items. “If we are driving and see a sign advertising jams twenty-five miles into the woods, we drive twenty-five miles into the woods,” Chris says. “That’s where you find the coolest stuff.”
Northwoods Cheese Haus also supports local farmers and bakers by carrying eggs, honey, and fresh sourdough bread. They offer classes in charcuterie and cater small events with cheese towers and lavish spreads.
The Evitch family is also active in sports and the arts around town. Broc earned a gold medal in National Bench Powerlifting and will compete in the World Competition in Norway in May. On that trip, Chris is sure to find some interesting Norwegian flavors to add to the shelves at Northwoods Cheese Haus.

NICHOLE PORTER, OWNER OF MERRY MAIDS OF OMAHA, SHARES SOME HELPFUL TIPS REGARDING SPRING CLEANING.
Warm weather is arriving, so pollen, dirt, dust, and dander will try to set up shop in your home. A spring-cleaning session is the perfect way to refresh your home for the season and a great way to give yourself a head start on any springtime projects you might have planned around the house.
Decluttering or organizing can give you a sense of accomplishment and an improved mood. Porter recommends discarding old and expired makeup, updating your house first aid kits, tossing expired medication, storing winter items for next year, and donating unused clothing to local community organizations.
Minimize seasonal allergies in your home by eliminating dust, dander, and pollen. To eliminate these, Porter recommends keeping windows closed during pollen season, especially in the bedroom where you spend most of your time. Wash bedding in hot water, including mattress pads and pillowcase covers.
By freshening up your home before the warmer weather sets in, you can remove lingering odors that have built up over time. Porter recommends freshening up your dishwasher by placing one cup of vinegar in a glass bowl in the top rack and running a high heat cycle. Once the cycle is complete, remove the bowl, sprinkle baking soda in the bottom basin, and run a second cycle.
REDUCE STRESS, RESTORE BALANCE, AND REVITALIZE YOUR MIND AND BODY

Float District redefines self-care in a fast-paced world where wellness often takes a backseat. Jonathan Gragg, owner of Float District, offers therapies designed to restore balance and vitality.
At its heart are spacious float tanks—far from the typical enclosed pods. “These tanks are spacious enough to walk into, stand up, and get comfortable,” Gragg says. For those hesitant about confined spaces, this design makes floating more accessible. The facility also features Omaha Metro’s only two-person float tank.
For many, float therapy is more than relaxation; it’s transformation. Anand Murphy, a two-year member, describes float and sensory deprivation tanks not as a means to escape, but to lean into anxiety and stress.
“It’s so opposite of what society says. It says, ‘Oh, let’s be distracted,’” says Murphy. “Really, the float tank works by observing your mind like a movie. The remedy for your anxiety is sitting and looking at it for an hour.”
Murphy shares that he has done float and meditation therapy for years, highlighting how it helps with energy.
“They say stress is having too much to do and not enough time or energy. The float tank works with that third variable. You may have too much to do, not enough time, but you’ll have that energy.”
Beyond floating, Murphy uses the cold plunge for the dopamine and serotonin it provides. “You’d be shocked to learn how simple things create the most profound impacts.”
Float District also offers two sauna options: a full-spectrum sauna that heats the body from core to exterior and a halo salt sauna that promotes respiratory and skin health. Other services include vibroacoustic therapy—described as a waterbed enhanced with sound waves for deep relaxation—along with chromotherapy, or light therapy, and red-light therapy.
Gragg offers these therapies as an investment in oneself. “Most people don’t realize how much we need solitude,” he says. “Even an hour of true weightlessness can be life-changing.”
Float District offers flexible memberships, discounted trial sessions, and military discounts, including free services on Veterans Day.

Boost your health by adding a generous serving of fresh greens to your daily diet. While both cooked and raw vegetables offer health benefits, consuming them raw often provides the most nutrients. Raw greens are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential vitamins, helping to lower inflammation and reduce the risk of disease.
Dandelion greens are a nutritious and easy addition to any meal, perfect for salads or cooked dishes. They are rich in vitamins A, C, K, chlorophyll, and fiber, making them a great choice for digestion and overall health. Their light flavor and texture enhance salads and sandwiches.
Broccoli is often hailed as a nutritional powerhouse, packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals that support overall health. Known for being high in vitamins A, C, and K, it also contains important minerals like potassium, iron, and calcium. In addition, it’s a rich source of beta-carotene, flavonoids, and fiber. Whether raw or cooked, broccoli is an excellent choice for immune system support, making it one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables available.
Brussels sprouts are a highly nutritious cruciferous vegetable, known for their vitamin C, K, and folate content, as well as carotenoids and fiber. These vegetables can be shaved, sliced, sautéed, boiled, or grilled, offering a range of flavors from mild to bitter, depending on preparation.
Kale is loaded with essential nutrients such as vitamins C, B6, E, K, and manganese. It contains twice as much selenium as spinach and is an excellent source of calcium. Kale’s unique properties help bind to cholesterol and lower oxalate levels, which promotes calcium absorption and makes it suitable for those prone to kidney stones. Additionally, it provides eye health benefits, thanks to lutein, and its disease-fighting properties make it a great addition to salads, smoothies, and more.
Artichokes are not only delicious but also packed with fiber, which aids in digestion. They are a great source of plant protein, potassium, and antioxidants like polyphenols. Artichokes also provide essential nutrients, including vitamins C, K, folate, magnesium, and B vitamins.
Asparagus is versatile and can be enjoyed grilled, sautéed, baked, or even raw. Packed with vitamins C, E, B, K, folate, and copper, it’s a great source of fiber. It also helps lower cholesterol and provides a variety of antioxidants that aid in healing. Asparagus is a perfect side dish that complements both light and robustly flavored meals.
Spinach is a popular green known for its mild flavor and impressive nutritional profile. Rich in vitamins A, C, K, as well as magnesium, potassium, and iron, spinach is great for overall health. It also provides antioxidants that support eye health and includes calcium for stronger bones. However, because spinach has a higher oxalate content, it should be consumed in moderation by those with a history of kidney stones.
