Editor’s Letter

Celebrate the holidays.

BILTMORE ARCADIA

DECEMBER 2015

M

y most memorable Christmas was during one of the hardest periods of my life. My mother was battling a serious illness, which had landed her in the hospital just a few days before Christmas. Knowing that I was going to spend the holidays in a hospital while my mother struggled with her health really hit me hard. I would just take one look at the brightly lit tree or cheerful Santas lining our mantelpiece and tears would instantly well up in my eyes.

Christmas Eve came and passed. My father and I visited the hospital, had dinner there, came home and went straight to bed. However, the next morning something unexpected happened. My father woke me up at 5 a.m. to make our traditional baked ziti Christmas dinner. By 10 a.m., the sauce was cooled, the ziti was made and everything was ready to go to the hospital. I’ll never forget the look on my mother’s face when she saw us bring in the dinner—her smile was so pure and filled with joy that it’s still etched in my memory today. Just as we were about to eat, her nurse walked in. That’s when my father had the idea of inviting all the nurses to share our Christmas Dinner. By the end of the day, all the food was gone, everyone was stuffed and I had almost forgotten where we were. Reflecting on it now, I realize that it wasn’t so much about us keeping up the spirit of the holiday; it was my mother’s strength, my father’s kindness and the selfless willingness of the nurses to give up their Christmas to help us that I will always take with me.

Giving Back

Season of Giving A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION IN NEED OF A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

hen Rob Perelka was a teen going through a challenging time, someone wisely taught him that every kid counts, even him. This notion was something that stuck with Perelka as he grew up and what eventually inspired him to help start the nonprofit organization Every Kid Counts, Inc. (EKC). “We are a children’s charity without borders,” says Perelka, president and co-founder of EKC. “We help where we can, when we can and how we can, but primarily in education, athletics and through philanthropic giving.” Currently, EKC is focusing its energy on the Books to Bikes Literacy Program, Character Counts Scholarship Program, Stuff the Pack Back to School Drive and Season of Giving Campaign. A HOLIDAY MIRACLE

“Every day you wake up and you know you are making a difference in someone’s life. We have a lot of great people who take the ball and run with it,” says Perelka. Primarily through the generosity of Chase Bank, EKC stuffed 750 backpacks this year, 400 more than the year before. During the past four years, they have given away nearly 700 bikes to kids in the Creighton Elementary School District and have encouraged Arizona children to read more than 50 thousand books through the Books to Bikes Literacy Program. 12

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | December 2015

“It’s a great learning experience for them and they get a brand new bicycle for doing something that’s a positive benefit to themselves,” says Perelka. EKC hosts a monthly bike drawing for kids who submit their reading lists. EKC also creates opportunities for kids to deliver oral book reports so they can get experience with public speaking. Even though EKC is out in the community doing great things, the program has scaled back because of the economy. While Perelka remains optimistic about its ability to continue to serve children, it’s clear that EKC could use a holiday miracle of its own in the form of sponsorships, toys and funding. “We are making a difference and we can make an even bigger difference with more support,” says Perelka. FAVORITE TIME OF THE YEAR

EKC's Season of Giving Campaign runs through December 24, and Perelka and his team are collecting toys, food and clothing for families. Donors can drop off goods or monetary gifts to any Chase Bank in the Valley. EKC also has an impressive holiday events calendar filled with parties for various groups including the Creighton School District, military families at Davis Mathis Air Force Base and underprivileged children in Flagstaff.

One of Perelka’s favorite holiday events is the Secret Santa program. Board members stack boxes of gifts on people’s front doors, ring the bell and run. It’s a total surprise for the families receiving the gifts. Santa’s elves, as well as EKC, remain anonymous.

PERELKA’S GIFT

“Someone made a difference in my life when I was 14 and I’ve been giving back ever since,” he shares. When Perelka was a teen his life was turned upside down when his parents divorced. They moved back to California and he had to become a young man well before he was ready. Jessie Orosco, a World Series major league baseball pitcher, was related to Perelka’s neighbors and heard that the kid next door was struggling. So one day, he stopped by to see if Perelka wanted to play catch. That one game of catch turned into a meaningful friendship that would set Perelka’s life in a new direction. “Not only was I keeping up with the balls Jessie was pitching to me, he also changed my spirit because he talked to me. He told me that I could do anything I wanted to.” Perelka’s heart began to mend, the pieces of his family eventually glued back together and his desire to help others grew. During college he started an athletes leadership program, and when he graduated he was hired by the Arizona Rattlers Arena Football Club and another nonprofit organization. Then one day, he and some friends had a brilliant idea for a program and founded EKC. That was more than 21 years ago, and he still continues to give with the same fervor and enthusiasm as when he first started. “We make a difference in all kids, but we also make a big difference in the whole family.”

PAPER

PUT A PERSONAL STAMP ON THE HOLIDAYS WITH CUSTOM STATIONERY AND SPECIALTY GOODS ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY IMAGES BY MICHAEL

A

fter years of helping other people get their own businesses up and going, Rene Showalter knew the time was right to start focusing on something of her own. She had plenty of experience in the interior design industry, but as she looked at the prospect of going into business for herself, she knew that she wanted to do something different; something where she could continue to be organized and creative while also interacting with people. Eventually Showalter found herself at a gift show in Los Angeles, and after walking around and looking at all the different things select vendors had to offer, she felt herself being pulled toward stationery, paper and invitations. In talking with people afterwards, she found a certain appeal in helping mark some of the biggest events in others’ lives, like graduations, weddings and birth announcements, and knew she was on her way. An opportunity to share retail space with a florist gave her what she needed to make the leap, and Celebrations in Paper was born. That was almost two decades ago. “The business has actually changed quite a bit,” says Showalter. Before the recession, she had a lot of corporate clients locally and across the country that would not shy away from splurging on top-of-the-line invitations for special events throughout the year. But as budgets tightened, that aspect of the business began to diminish. 14

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | December 2015

“With social media and other alternatives online, businesses just are not doing that anymore. It pushed us more toward the higher-end, custom stuff. Now our primary customer is the person who still really wants to give a great thank you note, or who really wants to create a memorable or one-of-a-kind invitation or announcement, and that’s great!” As the business has evolved, Celebrations in Paper has also expanded its inventory to include a bit more than just stationery and cards. Showalter is always on the lookout for items that she personally enjoys, believing that if she and her staff are passionate about what they have on the shelf, the easier it is to make sure that each customer leaves with just the right thing. From small handmade gifts and favors to soaps, lotions and a variety of books, chances are they’ll have something perfect for any occasion. With a continual commitment to drive her business toward excellent products, an unmatched quality of personal service, and an unyielding attention to detail, Showalter has positioned Celebrations in Paper as one of the best specialty shops of its kind in the Valley. After establishing that kind of reputation, and after years of resisting the idea of getting her own dedicated place, four years ago Showalter moved Celebrations in Paper into its current space— an 1,800-square-foot retail shop in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, which is right where she feels it belongs. “Things were really hit or miss back in 2008 and 2009, and there were plenty of stationery stores that ended up going out of business,

and now there are just not that many left,” says Showalter when asked about why she feels Scottsdale is the perfect home for her business. “I think the ones that did survive, those are the ones where you still talk to the shop owner. People here want that level of personal service. They want to touch the different papers and see the different methods of printing; that’s why they come here, and that’s why we love being here.” Celebrations in Paper is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 480.946.5680 or visit CelebrationsInPaper.com.

History 101

ghost Towns OF CHRISTMAS PAST A SMALL MINING COMMUNITY WITH A UNIQUE HOLIDAY HISTORY ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

F

ew places, if any, throughout the Southwest could ever be mistaken for anything resembling the North Pole. Through most of the twentieth century, however, for one small mining community in Gila County it was always Christmas (Arizona, at least). In the early 1880s, minerals were found in Gila County’s Dripping Spring Mountains. Shorty thereafter, though, it was discovered that those early claims resided within the boundaries of the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation and all mining operations were forced to shut down. After the lines were re-surveyed, President Theodore Roosevelt issued a simple, one-sentence executive order on December 22, 1902, redrawing the boundary and returning much of the contested land back to public domain. The popular story goes that two opportunistic claim jumpers by the names of George Chittenden and N.H. Mellor wasted no time once they heard the news of the change, and headed to the site of previous mineral discovery on Christmas Eve with the intent of staking their claims the next day.

16

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | December 2015

“But it was Christmas Day in the morning, so we filled our stocking and named the place Christmas in honor of the day,” said Mellor a few years later. The town of Christmas was nothing short of a typical mining community, just with an atypical name. Its population peaked to about

1,000 residents by the 1920s, and early on boasted a dairy and meat market, a barbershop, a general store, and a Catholic school and church. The Christmas post office opened in 1905, and throughout December became swamped with mail from all over the country, as people would send their holiday cards and

letters there to get the coveted “Christmas, Ariz.,” postmark before being re-mailed to their final destination. The Christmas mine changed hands many times over the years, and declining copper prices caused operations to become undependable at best. The community never recovered from the Great Depression, and the post office closed its doors in 1935. The mine was converted to an open mining pit in the 1960s, but could never again sustain operations. The site closed for good and was abandoned in the early 1980s. The site of Christmas, with a handful of its early structures still intact, sits about nine miles north of Winkelman, off of Arizona State Route 77. The road is access-restricted, however, as the site is privately held by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. More information on Christmas can be found at the Gila County Historical Museum in Globe, including historical documents and photographs. Additional information on the area and the museum can be found at GilaHistorical.com

Griffin Estate Sales A TESTAMENT THAT GOOD THINGS CAN HAPPEN WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY KAILEY MCCAULEY LOUD

J

udi Scanlon-Loud is the successful owner of Griffin Estate Sales, but only a few years ago, life handed her not just one sour lemon, but a whole bag of them. She hit rock bottom after she left her husband and the reality that she needed to leave her beautiful Paradise Valley home and start anew sank in. With support from her family, she gathered her strength and began to pull the pieces of her shattered life back together. In fact, she glued those pieces into the shape of an elegant crystal bowl, filled it with a bunch of lemons and eventually sold it. First she moved into a much smaller place, but had way too many things for her new home. Storage wasn’t practical, so she decided it was time to let go of the excess. She did interior design and worked in the furniture business; so she took her knowledge of sales, made a few phone calls and sold everything she didn’t need. The money she made helped establish her new life, and at the end of the day she learned that it could be very cathartic to purge. A few months later, Scanlon-Loud received a call from a friend going through a divorce who asked if she could help her downsize by selling the furniture from her 7,000-square22

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | December 2015

foot home. This was a turning point for Scanlon-Loud, and the beginning of Griffin Estate Sales. PLANT A LEMON TREE

Scanlon-Loud has more than 23 years of experience selling furniture, which created a strong foundation when beginning her company. Her love of interior decorating is useful as well, especially when staging a sale. “I love what I do. I work in beautiful homes and meet wonderful and exciting people,” says Scanlon-Loud. “We have done some of the most prestigious estates in the Valley. Every estate sale and client is unique, and the items some of my clients wish to sell oftentimes tell a wonderful story.” When someone is interested in holding a sale, Scanlon-Loud offers a complimentary evaluation to see if it’s the best route for them. “If we can help, we will do our best to accommodate you with whatever we can,” she says. She and her staff will stage and price items, and even invite a variety of clients they feel would be interested in purchasing. Sales are typically scheduled for one or two days and payment is made to the seller within 72 hours after the sale closes.

When discussing the best items to sell, she says that somewhat unique items with character, items that will attract certain interests or would be an asset to someone's interior designs, are most desirable. She also has some great advice for people who are on the fence about letting go. "Remember, the only things you can take with you when you leave this world are the memories you've packed in your heart.” If life throws a few lemons in your direction, Scanlon-Loud recommends focusing on the future. “Tomorrow is another day and it will get better, trust me.” To learn more, visit GriffinEstateSales.com.

o matter your age, there’s always something magical about the holiday season. It’s a time of sentimental reflection and a time to create new memories. This year, add to your holiday memories by celebrating at the beautifully decorated Phoenician Resort. The resort’s three popular restaurants have incredible Christmas menus for you, your family and your friends to enjoy. The hard part will be choosing which one to dine at, as you can be assured that a delicious and memorable meal will be experienced at each. “We are driven to provide a superior level of quality throughout the resort in regards to our culinary offerings and service," says Executive Chef Rick Boyer. "The four main areas on which we focus daily are product excellence, simplicity, consistency and mastery of the basics. This is achieved in part by partnering with local/regional growers to ensure freshness and seasonality. All of these efforts support our overall goal, which is to build a culinary destination for local guests as well as those visiting from abroad, creating personal and memorable dining experiences.”

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA

Breakfast selections include classic eggs Benedict, brioche French toast, cheese blintz, made-to-order omelets, and scrambled eggs with Applewood smoked bacon and country sausage. meat and honey glazed ham. At the sushi and raw bar you’ll find servings of oysters on the half shell, jumbo shrimp cocktail and crab claws. Plus, there will be Caviar, smoked and cured fish, antipasti, a selection of imported and domestic cheese and fresh seasonal fruit. And the grand finale—choosing one of the chef ’s popular dessert selections. CHRISTMAS DINNER

A memorable three-course dinner is being prepared both Christmas Day and Christmas Eve at Il Terrazzo. The meal begins with a choice of fried Brussels sprouts, tuna tartar, kale and arugula salad, a Caesar wedge salad and roasted baby beets. Entrée choices include duck confit ravioli, North Atlantic line-caught cod, Jidori chicken breast, cinnamon glazed short rib, handcarved horseradish crusted prime rib, East Coast scallops and mushroom bolognese. Dessert choices include milk chocolate caramel apples, classic crème brulee, a peppermint delight yule log, ice cream and sorbettos with pizzelle cookies. Relish Burger Bistro is serving a Christmas feast of smoked prime rib with horseradish potatoes and rosemary sea salt popover. The special holiday dessert is a delectable brownie served with peppermint crunch ice cream. If ordering from the a la carte menu, you’ll find an assortment of salads and mouth-watering burgers to choose from. A must-try here are the fried pickles, which are delicious when dipped in the house ranch dressing. At J&G Steakhouse, you can order off its sumptuous a la carte menu or Christmas menu. The three-course Christmas dinner includes truffle fritters for a starter; a choice of butternut squash soup or bacon-wrapped shrimp; and entrée selections of sautéed red snapper or caramelized beef tenderloin. There are also two scrumptious desserts to choose from— a pumpkin ice cream sundae or warm chocolate cake with caramel ice cream. Be sure to make your reservations early and reference the website for more information on the menus. The Phoenician’s other wonderful holiday events are listed in our Around Town section. Parting Thoughts

The Gift of ‘Don’t Need To’ WORDS ALISON STANTON

Y

ou know how some people get giddy at the sight of Christmas merchandise when it shows up in Costco in August? While others are bemoaning the appearance of St. Nick and his requisite team of reindeer long before the pumpkins and ghosts have made their annual October appearances, these holiday-philes are counting down the days until they can put up their Christmas trees, string thousands of lights outside and hang their stockings by the chimney with care. I have a confession for you: I’m one of them. Much to my family’s chagrin, I play Christmas music year-round in my car. In my defense, nothing will help you get through a 118 degree August day more than listening to Bing Crosby croon his way through “White Christmas.” Most every night between Thanksgiving and New Years, I head out with my kids to see the gorgeous holiday decorations in our neighborhood, and don’t mind the ever-earlier appearance of Christmas goodies in the store. You might think that with all of my sugar plum dreams and multiple viewings of A Charlie Brown Christmas—yes, even in the middle of summer—that maybe I’d be immune to the stresses that are so common during this time of year. Let me assure you right now that nothing is further from the truth. Right around the time when the candy canes start showing up in the supermarket, I start to come down with my annual case of the “shoulds.” You know how it goes. I should really bake more cookies this year. I should get everything wrapped by the middle of December so I won’t be up until midnight on Christmas Eve. I should see 34

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | December 2015

more of my family and friends. I should tie some cheerful swag around my banister so it looks like that gorgeous picture I saw in the magazine. Should, should, should. It’s enough to almost take the joy out of one of the happiest times of the year. And I know I’m not alone. With this in mind, I’ve decided to give myself and everyone else I know—including everyone taking a break from their holiday To Do lists to read this article—a very special gift this year. I’m calling it The Gift of “Don’t Need To.” Go back a few paragraphs and replace all those “shoulds” with “don’t need to.” Did you feel your blood pressure lower? So did I. Sure, your family loves it when you pull freshly baked cookies out of the oven, but I bet they’ll gobble them up just as fast if you make them with store-bought dough. And while it’s nice to have everything done before Christmas morning, it’s not like you can abandon all of your other responsibilities to focus on the holiday. Your friends and family are wonderful and you want to see them, but there are plenty of other opportunities to see them throughout the year. Instead of rushing through a holiday dinner at your Aunt Betty’s house because you feel you need to be there, suggest that you all get together in the first week of January and enjoy a leisurely barbecue at your place. And all those holiday decorations that would make Martha Stewart drool? Do what you have time for and what brings you joy, and leave the rest. Your house will still be full of holiday cheer and you’ll feel more relaxed and at peace this season, and that’s plenty lovely all on its own.
