G

rowing up, it seemed like I was always moving. In fact, by the time I was a senior in high school, I had the art of packing down to a science—that is, if I even bothered to unpack at all. Although I have lived in many houses over the years, 11 to be exact, I will always consider my true home to be an adobe-style two-story in Queen Creek, Arizona. It was the first house that my parents actually owned, and I still remember the day we first saw it. We walked in the simply decorated house to find the owners cooking dinner and their young daughter playing with the dog in the backyard. Shortly after touring the home, we knew we had to make it ours. When we finally closed on the house, my parents’ smiles were so radiant that I thought they would outshine the Arizona sun. On a hot July day with temperatures boiling past 110-degrees, we moved the last of our old furniture into the home, and thus began the redecorating process. To make the home truly ours, we painted all the walls, added tile downstairs and hand-selected all of our furniture. I remember countless Saturdays making the one-hour trek into town to visit furniture stores and model homes, picking up fun and eclectic finds while spending time together as a family. During that time, I also learned some valuable lessons about furnishing a home; like never hang a chandelier before you get a dining room table, especially if you are tall, and although hanging real garlic from a pot rack for decoration may look nice, it certainly doesn’t smell so.

When our house was finally finished we were pretty proud of our work, the interior reflecting a cozy Tuscan-meets-desert design. However, for me, it was so much more than that. Every single piece of furniture represented a memory, with the whole house coming together as a story of one of my family’s proudest moments and greatest achievements.

CLOSET MASTERS ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

F

amily-owned and-operated is a great way to run a business, but for the Ostash family, who own Closet Masters, it is the only way. “Our motto is Our Family Values Give You the Value You Deserve,” explains General Manager Kirk Ostash. “It just makes sense. We are honest people who care about everyone we deal with, and we pride ourselves by giving our customers the best we can.” After an ill-fated partnership in 1984, Closet Masters found an unexpected buyer in 1993 when Kirk’s dad, Ron, made a surprising announcement. “My dad never had any kind of construction background, and was working as a manager with Michaels Craft Stores, but always wanted to own his own company. He had a friend who had just bought a window and door company, and when their realtor told my dad about this place, that’s where it began.” Kirk, who was a student at the University of Arizona at the time, received a call from his dad shortly thereafter; a call that would bring him back home and change his career plans forever. “He called a week before exams and said, ‘Hey, I just bought a closet company.’ I didn’t know what a closet company was, because in the early nineties this was all new and the beginning of the whole industry.” Closet Masters quickly added more Ostashes to the payroll, which now includes Ron’s wife Margie, as well as Kirk’s wife Monique, and Kirk’s brother Keith as his right hand man. Closet Masters started off selling just basic wire shelving closets, typically found today in the DIY

16

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | May 2016

sections of big box stores, and quickly transformed the industry, if not lead the way, to offer high-quality storage solutions with a personal touch for a quality price. Offering much more than just closets, their portfolio includes entertainment centers, office systems, garage cabinets, pantries, and even kitchen cabinetry. A quick tour through their showroom will easily show where Kirk sets the bar of his family’s company in comparison to their competition.

“Their top-notch is our standard,” he adds with pride. What allows Closet Masters to be so confident is that they have a track record spanning more than two decades for never sacrificing quality in any of their craftsmanship or installations. Their standard doors and moldings are made of solid wood, along with Dove-Tail joined drawer boxes. These standard features are the expectation rather than the exception. Each piece is equipped with soft-closing hinges and drawer glides that allow for soft and quiet opening and closing of doors and drawers. The luxury of having their shop just behind the showroom is another benefit not commonly found when dealing with other companies, and something that Closet Masters is happy to point out to potential clients. Most closet contractors outsource their production and have to order their units piece-by-piece, with turnaround usually taking weeks. “More and more, I am finding that our competitors are not making anything anymore. They just order it in from outside the state. We are not limited because we make almost everything ourselves, so we can really give each customer exactly what they want regardless of whatever style or colors they have throughout their house.” At Closet Masters, Kirk simply manufactures their cabinets along with his brother Keith, and they can often be ready to install within days.

Closet Masters covers the entire Valley and beyond, but the heart and soul of their business will always be as close to home as possible. “Paradise Valley and Scottsdale are where we are,” says Kirk. “And these are the people that we love to serve.”

Although the framework of the house—it was originally designed by notable local architect Mel Ensign—remained the same, much of the interior was revamped. So much so, that the home was featured in the Modern Phoenix Home Tour, which was held on April 10. “The renovation consisted of making the house much lighter and brighter,” says Buckingham. 18

with the piece, and miraculously, it fit into the tiny space without her measuring it. Buckingham’s home manages to feel both modern and vintage, with just a splash of whimsy. And that’s by design. The orange and yellow-colored console in her living room wouldn’t feel out of place on the set of Mad Men. A table with a glass top and an impressive base

hand-crafted out of an actual ship’s anchor gives the room a whimsical touch, as does a surprisingly comfortable orange chair shaped like a hand. Orange is one of her colors of choice. “It was a fantastic complement to this petrified wood and stone throughout the house. It made everything pronounced; the stone and the texture of the stone. Every time I introduced an orange piece, I thought, I don’t want to be too orangey, but this makes so much sense,” says Buckingham. At one time, she worked as an antique dealer and says she always likes to feature pieces from different eras in each room that she creates. She wants her pieces to be fodder for “cocktail conversations.” “It’s become the whole moniker of my design style. Mixing antiques and modern together. I actually trademarked the word, which is’ modernique.’” Another part of her past also seeps into her current designs. She helped open the Neiman Marcus on Michigan Avenue in Chicago, and now displays artwork from a homeless woman who lived outside the store, Lee Godie. A Godie creation featuring numerous yellow birds hangs in the downstairs bedroom. “I’m attracted to this naïve art that is not polished. That is not pedigreed, but it’s really artists saying and showing their emotions, inspirations and their dreams through rough, raw drawings. That’s why I’m so attracted to her work,” says Buckingham. Her fashion background is also evident in her designs. Blue and gray Hermes wallpaper made to resemble a full book shelf adorns CONTINUED >

The intermingling of fashion and design is no coincidence either. “The things that I like to do in terms of the entire interior design interpretation are all about the meddling of fashion and interiors. Even if it’s detail on a sofa. Fringe on a rug. A metallic finish on a chandelier I’ve designed. It’s all about something feeling not necessarily so industrial. Feeling softened by the fact that what we wear and where we like to live are completely conjoined.” A seamless design for a flawless home. 20

The first and only member of Marriott’s Autograph Collection— a group of boutique hotels—in Arizona, The Camby is Phoenix’s answer to a modern, refined hotel. It’s not much of a surprise, then, that the hotel’s restaurants feature a blend of old and new, with just a touch of whimsy. ARTIZEN

Aritzen is The Camby’s fine dining venue. This sleek restaurant—located to the right of the hotel’s main entrance—features royal blue walls, a patio complete with a waterfall and its very own bar. Small details make for a charming setting. Brass light fixtures, succulents in circular gray containers on dining tables and marble table tops make for a refined and elegant atmosphere. 26

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | May 2016

The menu is a colorful mix of dishes that draw inspiration from both locally-sourced ingredients and international fare, like the roasted Thai-curried cauliflower. Stand-out options include the foie torchon, served as a spread alongside pickled blackberries, purple mustard, sweet onion marmalade and toast; creamy smoked goat cheese fondue accompanied by sweet potato chips and texture-rich Brussel sprouts, which are charred in-house. My personal favorite was the smoked Arizona sweet potatoes served with duck fat, chive and white BBQ sauce. Each bite proved to be sweet and savory, making for a well-balanced dish. One local highlight of the dessert menu was the sticky dates. Warm, decadent and thick chocolate date pudding was served alongside rum ice cream dashed with a sprinkling of chopped pistachios. This flavorful dessert is a tasty homage to one of Arizona’s biggest locally-grown crops, and manages to please each and every taste bud.

THE BEES KNEES

Like the entire hotel, prohibition-era bar The Bees Knees feels vintage and modern all at once. Located just a few steps from the front entrance, the dark bar, dim lighting and wood shelves are reminiscent of a scene from Mad Men. But it’s not without some distinctly modern touches. A flat panel TV sits at the center of the bar shelves, while moving projections displayed above the marble make for one eye-pleasing scene. The centerpiece of the bar is a warm, cream-colored lounge chair where groups, couples and singles can mix and mingle. The dedication to craft cocktails is literally evident on the bar. On the night we visited, the head mixologist, Libby Longlott’s, citrus fruits, missing their peels that are grated for zest, were sitting in a wire basket. Two water glasses filled with basil and mint were on the bar, as were a few bottles of bitters used to complement the drinks. However, the real highlight is a rectangular shaped container holding a square sheet of honeycomb, which is used in the spot’s signature cocktail, The Bees Knees. The cocktail certainly lives up to its name. The well-balanced blend of Nolet’s gin, lemon and orange blossom honey syrup is sweet with a slight bite that makes for an unforgettable drink. You’ll also find classics like Pisco sours, Negronis and the cleverly named Liquid Dramamine, a blend of Tito’s vodka, raspberry syrup, lime, cranberry, rhubarb bitters and ginger beer. Martinis, local beers, wine, whiskeys and scotch round out the menu. Small bites like Queen Creek Olive Mill marinated olives, in addition to larger plates like burgers, are also available. Whether you’re searching for a way to step back in time or looking forward to the future, The Camby, and its two restaurants, manages to offer both experiences.

Optimal Performance TERRY ROACH TEACHES HOW TO TAKE YOUR BODY TO A HIGHER LEVEL

ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

A

re you finding that you can no longer do what you use to do? Do you suffer from back pain? Are you recovering from an injury? Every one of us will eventually suffer from aches and pains due to using our muscles incorrectly and compensating by putting strain on other parts of our body. By becoming aware of your muscles and using them properly, you can increase your energy, enhance your quality of life and continue doing your favorite hobbies and sports. LEARNING WHAT NO ONE HAS TAUGHT YOU

Terry Roach, CEO and owner of Body Stabilization Training, Inc., has dedicated her life to helping people connect to their muscles, allowing their injured parts to heal, improving their athletic performance, and getting them back to the things they love to do. She received her Physical Education degree from Angelo State University, San Angelo, Texas and became a physical education teacher, dance teacher and coach for 11 years. Earning her Master’s in Education from Arizona State University, she then became a Registered Kinesiotherapist. For seven years, Roach worked at the Center of Sports Medicine as the head of the Kinetic Therapy Department, dealing with clients such as the Phoenix Suns, among many others. After having back surgery and still experiencing pain, she researched rehab programs across the country to develop and refine her own program. Roach began racing bicycles at 44 years old and won 14 World and National Masters track cycling championships. She began her own physical therapy and kinesiotherapy practice in 1991, BST Inc., which specialized in backs and necks, treating the cause of injuries rather than just the symptoms. Her recovery from many bicycle crashes to return to high-level performances gave her deeper insight on injury. She has treated clients from 8 to 92 years old, with professions ranging from librarians to weekend warriors to professional and Olympic athletes to seniors. Former clients include Jack Nicklaus, Misty Hyman, Olympic Swimming Champions and the Phoenix Fire Department. “Whether your goal is to recover from injury, to get back to what you love, or looking for the detail to take you to the next level of sports performance, this program will get you there. Make your life an exercise routine by moving with your muscles,” explains Roach. Can you imagine the number of unnecessary injuries we could avoid if we had learned as children how to work with our body mechanics? Instinctively, infants and toddlers move correctly, yet as they grow older, due to lifestyle and age, poor posture and injuries begin. 28

OVERCOMING INJURY

In 2011, while training on her bike, Terry was hit by a half-ton truck, sustaining injuries that would have killed a normal person. Fitness at the time of the accident and knowledge of how to move correctly has allowed her to recover and get back to an active lifestyle. The traumas she incurred from her accidents were three level neck fusions, a broken back, two knee surgeries and spinal cord damage. Through Terry’s dedication and commitment, golfers have improved their drive 35-50 yards, athletes extend careers and take their game to the next level, and seniors can continue to enjoy what they love without limitations or pain. Parting Thoughts

A Portrait of Mom

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY KARIANNE MUNSTEDT

M

oms, look around your home, at the pictures on your walls. How many of those pictures are of just you? Maybe there are pictures on your walls with you in them, but how long ago were those taken? Look at the photos on your phone. I’ll bet that you are typically the one behind the camera; that you have dozens of pictures of your husband, children, grandchildren, friends and pets, but very few with you in them. Somewhere along the line we decided to stay behind the camera. Why? Maybe we don’t like our nose or our smile, and we think these “imperfections” are not worthy of being in photographs. But know this: you are amazingly beautiful right now, right at this very moment in your life. You are perfect. You are worthy. You are uniquely you and are an important part of this world. Celebrate that! Your family, children and grandchildren don’t care about those “imperfections.” They love you for everything you are—for the person you are in your soul. I recently photographed a mom and her daughter. I didn’t know this beforehand, but during the session, the mother told me that she didn’t have any pictures of her and her daughter. A couple of weeks later, when she received her beautiful mother/daughter portraits, she cried. She posted this to social media: “Today is the day I have a photo with my daughter, instead of being behind the camera. I have always shied away from photos. Always. I have come to realize that I am missing from her tangible life memories, completely. All birthdays, all Christmases, all important events, just because I don't like to

have photographs taken. Today I begin the transition to being in the memories, too.” Now that is a truly beautiful story. Us moms wear a lot of hats, and sometimes it’s hard to take time for ourselves. We feel guilty for taking time away from our families, or for spending money on ourselves rather than our children. We often forget that when we invest in ourselves, we are doing something for our children too. By existing in photos, we are creating beautiful treasures that will be passed down from generation to generation. One day, photos of you will be amongst your child’s most prized possessions. We oftentimes forget, with all the hats that we wear, that we are also beautiful, vibrant women who want to celebrate our femininity and reconnect with our womanhood. Every mother wants a few hours to herself, to be pampered, have her hair and makeup done, get dressed up in fancy clothes and be treated like a model—to look at the walls of her home and see them adorned with beautiful portraits that she is proud of. That she exists in. Karianne Munstedt is a contemporary portrait photographer specializing in portraits for women and those they love. She would be honored to help you exist in photos with your own portrait session. View her portfolio at KLMPhoto.net.
