Celebrating Men! T

biltmore arcadia

he month of June is always synonymous with the beginning of summer. The days grow longer, temperatures begin to rise (for those of us in Arizona that means 100-degree days), the kids are home from school and a general sense of freedom and carefree fun seems to float through the air; making it an ideal time of year to take a trip or spend time with family. With Father’s Day falling in June too, it’s also the perfect time to reflect on all the influential men in our communities and lives—from star athletes and artists; to policemen and firemen; to teachers and coaches; to philanthropists and public figures; and of course, dads.

A key figure in my life is my father—a man who has been there for me through both the good times and bad times. From teaching me how to throw a baseball and ride a bike as a child, to enduring the countless door slams of my teenage years, to helping me pack up for college and then move into my first apartment, my father has always been there to lend a helping hand and a loving heart. I’ll always remember being six or seven years old, sitting on a bench in the middle of a park, a bright red Italian ice dripping on my hand, next to my father just watching all the cars pass by, talking while counting the number of out-of-state license plates that blurred by. Although I’ve moved away from home and those simple summer days spent in the park are now just fond memories, I will never forget what my father taught me—how to appreciate the smaller things in life and all the people that make it so special. In this issue we celebrate all things manly, highlighting an auto museum that houses cool collectible cars, a devoted stage dad and easy recipes for men to make.

Fitness for Men ACHIEVE OPTIMAL HEALTH WITH THESE EXPERT TIPS ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MOUNTAINSIDE FITNESS

W

ell, here we are, six months into the year. How’s that fitness plan you started in January holding up? Juggling work and family can monopolize a lot of time, leaving even those with the best intentions without any results. But, there’s hope. Making a determined effort to change a few things each day can add up to noticeable changes. Ivan Michel, CPT, GFS, FMS and personal trainer at Mountainside Fitness, advises his clients to “Find something that motivates you to live a healthy lifestyle. Set realistic, attainable goals with a timeframe and measure your progress. Don’t get discouraged. Create a positive attitude about exercise, as your attitude ultimately determines your outcome.” WHERE TO START

If you haven’t begun a fitness plan yet, you may want to meet with a fitness trainer and have them evaluate where you are and where you’d like to be. Michel advises his new clients to start slowly, doing a 30-minute cardio workout on a treadmill or bike twice a week. From there, you can add an incline to the treadmill and do a brisk walk or slow jog. As you progress, you can add intervals. For instance, a one-minute sprint at 5–8 mph and a two-minute brisk walk for 15 to 30 minutes. In a strength training program, Michel’s clients do a 30- to 45-minute workout three days a week with high repetitions of 12 to 20 and moderate resistance. Later, they advance to five days a week and a more intense workout with more reps and higher weights. NUTRITION

For overall good health, you also need to be conscience about what you eat. Michel advises to clean out your pantry and fridge, getting rid of all processed foods. Coffee drinkers, eliminate those creamers

and artificial sweeteners. Green tea, hot or cold, is a great alternative to coffee, as it burns fat and speeds up your metabolism. Make sure you are also eating whole foods, including white meat and fish. White meat consists of chicken, turkey and lean 95-99percent ground turkey. Fish should be wild-caught and not farmraised. You can eat red meat too, if you don’t have any cholesterol problems. Good choices in this category are bison or a high-quality steak. Dairy products and whole milk should be consumed in moderation. TOO BUSY TO EXERCISE

Many people have great aspirations when it comes to working out but just can’t seem to get started. Well, now you can; with a workout that you can do anywhere. Each morning when you wake up, roll out of bed and do 10 push-ups, 10 squats and 10 sit-ups before you jump into the shower. Then, as you go to work, look for ways to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Park your car a distance so you can take a brisk walk to your office. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. If you get an hour lunch break, eat for 30-minutes and walk the other 30- minutes. If you have casual clothes on, close your door and do a couple squats or sit-ups throughout the day. When you get home, take the dog for a long walk around your neighborhood. If you enjoy watching television in the evenings, start doing a couple exercises during the commercial breaks. You can easily do a 30-second plank, 5 squats and 5 push-ups during that time. Then challenge yourself by adding a few more repetitions each week. Remember, the most important thing is to start doing something, and by setting small, attainable goals, you’ll start seeing results and reaping the benefits of leading a healthier lifestyle. ocated in the Town & Country shopping center, Snooze was originally started by brothers Adam and Joe Schiegel in Denver, Colorado. A stylish diner with an extensive, upscale menu that is sure to please the entire family. Their mantra, “It only takes a moment to make a difference,” is evident in the extra effort they take to make your visit highly memorable. The Schiegel brothers are very particular about what they serve, and do thorough research to ensure that the products they source are healthy, range-free and cage-free before adding them to the menu. Some popular menu items are the eggs benedict, breakfast pot pie, breakfast burrito and the Snooze Classic. I enjoyed every bite of their signature pancake, the Pineapple Upside Down Pancake, which is made with buttermilk pancake batter and caramelized pineapple chunks, and is served with housemade vanilla crème anglaise and cinnamon butter. For eggs benedict lovers, Snooze has six versions to choose from. The Early Harvest Benny comes with poached eggs served on griddled pesto grit cakes, a medley of broccolini and wild mushrooms and finished with hollandaise sauce and roasted pepper coulis. It was healthy and delicious. I also enjoyed a vanilla latte made with organic coffee from Guatemala. Also not to be overlooked is the restaurant’s Bloody Mary, which has earned them The Best Bloody Mary award for the last two years. 2045 EAST CAMELBACK ROAD PHOENIX, AZ 85016

Andrew Fritz and Chef Bernie Kantak brought their expertise from the successful Citizen Public House restaurant in Scottsdale to the Camelback Corridor three years ago, creating the contemporary, urban restaurant, The Gladly, which has earned them The Best New Restaurant in Phoenix award. Chef Bernie’s twist on eggs benedict is the man-pleasing Eggs “Bernie”dict, a hearty dish with easy over eggs on a toasted pretzel roll with smoked sausage and cheese fondue. Other tantalizing choices are the mushroom omelette, eggs and grits, churro waffle and chilaquiles rojos. The Gladly’s Original Chop Salad and the Chilean crab cakes, with an avocado sauce, are also amazing options. Beverage Director Brian Goodwin explains that The Gladly is a risky whiskey establishment with 230 varieties on hand. I enjoyed sipping the Southern Hospitality made with Gentleman Jack whiskey, lemon oleo saccharum, dry vermouth, pomegranate molasses, orange bitters and a mist of orange blossom water. Also not to be missed are their manhattans and the sorbet mimosa with housemade orange sorbet and Prosecco wine. 2201 EAST CAMELBACK ROAD

New to The Colony area, opening just a few months ago, is the third location of this popular establishment that specializes in healthy and hearty meals with a savory twist. Susan SmederovacWilcox continues to provide a welcoming atmosphere with incredible, mouthwatering entrees since opening her first restaurant in Scottsdale twenty years ago. Tony Pena, assistant marketing manager, describes the cuisine found at The Herb Box as, “Worldly, innovative cuisine with a regional flair and attention to quality ingredients.” The breakfast and brunch menu offers a large selection of items that Dad will enjoy choosing from. A few recommended choices are the smoked salmon hash with pancetta bacon; the breakfast tenderloin steak and eggs with fingerling potatoes; the chilaquiles with pulled pork and egg on corn tortillas; and the bourbon-ginger peach brioche French toast. The portions are generous and each is a winner. Also, be sure to treat Dad to one of their incredible desserts! June 2016 | Paradise Valley Lifestyle

el Martin has always loved cars. He started working at a service station when he was 13 and hasn’t stopped since then. During his

lifetime, Martin has owned a body shop, a towing company and has started an auto auction. When his private collection grew to 22 cars, he decided to open a museum in the late 2000s to share it with the public. He is now the proud President of Martin Auto Museum, a museum just off of the I-17 that's housed in an unremarkable-looking warehouse. But, as the saying goes, you can’t judge a book by its cover. Once you step inside the museum, you'll find a 22,000-square-foot space featuring five rooms filled with 60 cars, two tractors, a dump truck, a go kart, a bicycle and vintage memorabilia like old gas pumps, ads for car lubricant, a carousel and a few jukeboxes, too. Martin esti-

mates that all but one of the cars is in good working condition—he can repair each and every one of them. He's acquired the cars from all over, at auctions, through his connections in the car world, and a few have even been donated. What does he look for in a "new" car that he might add to his stockpile? "If I like it, I buy it," Martin says. He's always on the hunt for CONTINUED >

"something different," adding an impressive six cars to his collection this past January during a car auction. Phoenix is also a ripe market for vintage cars. Martin attributes the city's affinity for classic cars to its good weather, which preserves the cars for a long time since they don't rust in the heat. Martin says he personally admires the craftsmanship of the vehicles he has spent his years acquiring. "Today's cars, most of them are throwaway cars," says Martin. "But look what you got here. They last longer." Venturing into the space is like a history lesson, starting near the entrance with a model of the first car prototype, a Benz that dates back to 1886. Ford Model T 's are also housed in the museum. A 1930 LaSalle Phaeton—a classic car that you've no doubt seen before—has been driven by Martin in many a parade. The newest car in the museum is a 2004 Cadillac prototype. Other highlights include notable racecar driver Jeff Gordon's Baby Ruth Car, the one he was driving when he won his first NASCAR race in 1992. Gordon's signature graces the hood. Martin estimates that the collection's most expensive car, worth about 1.5 million dollars, is a sleek, red 1930 Duesenberg Boattail. The car is one of only 481 built, but its former owner is really what makes it stand out. The car was originally the property of notorious Chicago gangster Jake "The Barber" Factor, who also owned the Stardust Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, a reputed front for the mafia. The museum is much more than just a space that holds vintage cars though. The building has been the site of weddings, birthday parties and baby showers. Auto parts store Parts Authority and car repair and collision repair shop Napa AutoCare hold corporate events here too, and a school group from Young, Arizona visits annually. "There's no other collection like it in Phoenix," says Martin. "We have a little bit of everything. Cars that have six miles on it. Cars that have been restored. Cars that we drive all the time in parades." For a look into the past, and to see some of the most revved up cars in town, Martin Auto Museum certainly makes the mark. radley Yonover is the ultimate stage dad. He drives his girls to and from rehearsals, helps behind the scenes whenever he can, and supports his daughters during their performances at Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre. For more than four years, his daughters Jaden, 15, and Mimi, 12, have performed in four to six shows a year. They have multiple performances and occasionally multiple roles per show. After all this experience, the girls have one important, self-imposed rule: Don’t look at Dad. “I’m totally the nerdy dad on the verge of tears. The girls say, ‘I can’t look at Dad or I’ll start laughing,’” says Yonover. “When I watch the girls perform, I feel like my heart is going to explode with

feelings of pride and excitement. This goes beyond the kindergarten Christmas pageant; this is real stuff.” Yonover lives in Paradise Valley with his wife, Sarah, and their daughters. He understands firsthand how theatre can shape young lives, having grown up performing at the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago. It was the perfect springboard for his 20-year career in the entertainment business as a movie and television producer. He is also one of the original founders of GreeneStreet Films, which has produced approximately 20 films, garnering five Oscar® nominations, several Golden Globes and numerous awards, including wins at festivals like Cannes and Sundance. “I know what effect it has on children. The growth that we saw with our kids – learning responsibilities, learning about what CONTINUED >

they love and the kind of people they’d like to be – it’s all encompassing,” says Yonover. DESERT STAGES

Desert Stages is an award-winning, non-profit performing arts theatre in Old Town Scottsdale. While they cater to both children and adult actors, they operate a year-round Academy of Theatrical Arts for ages 3-15, where children develop as performers, directors, choreographers and counselors. “It’s like one big family,” says Yonover. “One of the great things about Desert Stages is that the range is from high school kids to toddlers. It’s quite remarkable how they take care of each other.” While Desert Stages’ two-theatre location has served them well for 11 years, they’re moving to Scottsdale Fashion Square in the fall of 2016. The new space was once home to Harkin’s Theatres and is nearly twice the size of their current location.

“I’m the luckiest guy in the world, with a beautiful, intelligent, driven wife and two unbelievable daughters,” says Yonover. FAMILY INVOLVEMENT

Yonover is not only a great stage dad, he’s also a smart husband. He made sure to say how much Sarah has been a part of their daughters’ theatre experience too. She’s the primary chauffeur, and has volunteered countless hours to helping with make-up and costume design. “I’m the luckiest guy in the world, with a beautiful, intelligent, driven wife and two unbelievable daughters,” says Yonover. Stage moms often volunteer backstage in the dressing room, where the dads aren’t allowed. The moms chaperone, feed children and help them dress for performances, while the dads help with set-building, painting, ticket taking and snack bar. However, Yonover’s experience has been unique because of his background in production. “Over the years, we’ve done a lot for the program because we wanted to, not because we had to,” says Yonover. “Part of the fun of this is being there and seeing your kids have this unbelievable experience. There’s such comradery.” LIFELONG LESSONS

Everyone is included and celebrated for their uniqueness at the theatre, and each child plays a part or has a role. “Our life as a family has been made much more full because of Desert Stages and the people there,” says Yonover. “I applaud the entire staff. The kids are given the opportunity to rise to their potential and beyond. The lasting effect is lifelong.” His advice to other potential stage dads is simple. “Do it! Don’t think about it. And secondly, jump in and jump in with both feet. This will be one of the most important things that happens to your kids.”

hen Angie Cole met Garrett Rader while attending college at Arizona State University, they seemed to be a perfect match, both sharing a family-oriented background and deep love for animals and the outdoors. Shortly after graduating, Angie and Garrett were married and took ownership of Randy’s Restaurant, a well-loved Scottsdale eatery founded by Angie’s parents. When it finally came time for the couple to put down roots, they chose to make their first home in Paradise Valley and instantly fell in love with the area. “We decided to live in Paradise Valley because my parents lived there. Then once we got out here, we never wanted to leave,” says Angie. However, when the couple’s daughter, Malia Poppy, started to reach her toddler years, they decided it was time to invest in a bigger home for their growing family.

When Jill showed the Raders a quaint, traditional-style ranch home located within walking distance of Kiva Elementary School, it was love at first sight for Angie. “I took one look at that front yard and just saw our little one running around on the grass with her friends and the dogs. It was just perfect,” says Angie. Although it took a little more convincing to get Garrett on board, he was sold after seeing the home’s recently renovated interior with its spacious open-concept floorplan, custom wood flooring and abundance of windows filtering in light. The couple had finally found the perfect home. “The Raders are like family to me, so it just felt great to help them find their dream home here in Paradise Valley and to see them get settled in with their family,” says Brenenstuhl.

CHASING THE DREAM

It didn’t take long for the Raders to get accustomed to their new home either, as the whole community welcomed them with open arms. “We have a great little community here, and do a lot of things together like block-parties, Halloween parties and Christmas parties,” says Angie. “It’s really a lot of fun.” In fact, the front courtyard has become a main focal point of the home. Its classic black-and-white awning, custom pavers and dainty white roses winding up the side of the house provide a picturesque scene

After looking at a myriad of houses on their own, Angie and Garrett decided to enlist the help of longtime friend and Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage agent, Jill Brenenstuhl, who made it her top priority to both sell the family’s existing property and help them find a new home. “Jill was so wonderful to work with. She has such a perfectly calm personality and just made everything really easy and smoothed out the whole process,” says Angie. 26

from which Angie and Garrett can watch their daughter play on the grass or admire the breathtaking sunsets over Camelback Mountain. “It’s a cute and sweet little space that’s absolutely perfect for us; and when Malia is playing in the yard and the sun is setting over the mountains, it’s just amazing,” says Angie. Equally impressive is the home’s backyard, with almost an acre of land perfect for their dogs to run free on or daughter to explore the outdoors. They also have a beautiful pool, a massive play set and a bunch of blossoming orange trees. FAMILY LIVING

From the backyard, step inside the home through two French doors into its stunning kitchen. This completely updated space is perfect for both quiet family meals and entertaining, featuring granite countertops, custom wood cabinetry and an elegant little wine bar off to the side. The kitchen also boasts a massive waterfall-edged island that gives way to a table at the end; a favorite spot for the couple’s daughter. “One of her favorite things right now is when I set up a pizza bar at the end of the island so she can make her own little pizzas. It’s what she wants to eat every night!” says Angie. The spacious family room is also perfect for hosting guests, with its comfy leather sectional, sate-of-the art entertainment center and grand fireplace. There’s also the master-suite, which has a fireplace and two large windows overlooking the backyard, as well as an en-suite bathroom with a gorgeous custom shower. On the opposite side of the house is what Angie likes to call “Malia’s wing,” containing both her daughter’s bedroom and playroom. A gorgeous home for a wonderful family. CONTINUED >

Parting Thoughts

Outgrowing Daddy WORDS KORY KILMER

E

ver since my son began to speak, the majority of his sentences have been punctuated by the same word. “I had a great day at school today, Daddy!” “Can we have tacos for dinner tonight, Daddy?” “I love you too, Daddy.” These last few years, however, especially as we approached the end of his elementary school days this spring, the word doesn’t seem to get thrown around with the same fervor as it did when he was smaller. It makes sense, I get it. I was there, too, once. It just gets to the point where saying it isn’t cool. That certainly doesn’t mean I have to like it. There is a pretty easy metaphor of growing-up as the constant opening and closing of different chapters that, when binded together, comprise the multi-layered novel that is childhood. Many of those chapters have already played out with my son, of course. He learned to walk and talk almost a decade ago, and my head is full of other monumental occasions such as his first day of kindergarten, finally taking the training wheels off his bike, and more recently, the arrival of double-digit birthdays. Looking back though, it has been those little moments that I seem to treasure the most—letting him win at a game of Go Fish or Chutes and Ladders, pretending I loved the movie Cars as much

34

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | June 2016

during the 100th time we watched it together as I did our first, or not quite staying in between the lines while coloring at the kitchen table. Yet all those memories seem to have been accompanied with that one simple word. “Thank you, Daddy!” “Do you want to play with me, Daddy?” “Goodnight, Daddy.” We have arrived at the point where the tears no longer flow over every little thing, and where a trip to the ice cream store does not fix a bad day like it used to. But when I talk to my son now, I can see his mind go places I had not yet seen it go before, and it is exciting to watch it unfold. Now when we talk he can articulate hopes and fears, work through concepts and ideas, and begin to lay out a simplified trajectory for his developing dreams that when listening to, make me realize that he still thinks he is capable of anything. But in all of that dialogue, “Daddy” seems to be slowly fading away, replaced with this new character that’s taking a bit of getting used to. I will be the first to admit to being far from perfect, and this whole parenting thing has been a case study in learning on the fly. Yet every time I look at my son, I cannot help but feel proud to see the man he is becoming, in spite of my many mistakes and overreactions along the way. Here’s to the future, because I can only image that hearing, “I love you too, Dad,” is not all that bad, either.
