I don’t know about you, but my New Year’s Eve followed the same pattern as my 2020. For many years, my family spent New Year’s Eve with family friends of ours. It was perfect—the four of us parents are all friends, and our kids are all friends, as well. But, like the rest of 2020, our New Year’s Eve looked different too. Although I’m writing this prior to that evening, I know that we will forgo our usual tradition. Ushering in 2021 will be a quieter event, at home, with just our immediate family. While I always immensely value spending time with friends, I’ve also been reminded during 2020 to take time to slow down and have quality family time. It’s easy to be “passing ships in the night” when both parents work, and the kids are teens who would rather be out and about. So, kicking off 2021 the four of us (ok, five—the dog is definitely a family member,

For everyone, I hope this year ahead is filled with health, happiness, laughter, and good times. For those who are feeling isolated, or who need anything, please reach out—to family, to a friend, to a mentor, to us. One thing 2020 has reminded us is that we all need connections, and we all need to support each other.

DANCING WITH THE STARS’ MAKSIM CHMERKOVSKIY AND PETA MURGATROYD ON FINDING EACH OTHER, HELPING OTHERS, AND WHAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT THEM
WHEN MAKSIM “MAKS” CHMERKOVSKIY AND PETA MURGATROYD’S LOVE STORY EVEN REALIZE IT. joined the cast during Season 12. They say that being on the show is more difficult than people realize. “It’s not just dancing,” Murgatroyd explains. “We’re choreographing the numbers at 2, 3 a.m. in the mornings sometimes. We are involved in the set design, the lighting, what we want on the floor, what our partner is wearing—you name it, we have a part in it… choosing the music, cutting the music to what we want, adding in the instruments if we need more beats. “It’s a really hard job but I love performing. It’s live TV, you get one shot, you get to transform these people’s lives, you get to take them on a journey, and a lot of the time they end up healthier, while shedding pounds and reaching their goal weights. The journeys that we’ve been on with our partners combined, it’s such a roller coaster. They start as somebody, and they come out as somebody else on the other side. I love watching that and being a part of that journey.”

Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd are also grateful to be part of another journey that transforms people’s lives—specifically, children. They are passionate about their work with Childhelp (Childhelp.org), a national nonprofit dedicated to meeting “the physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs of abused, neglected and at-risk children,” which is headquartered here in the Valley. As celebrity ambassadors, they help spread the word about the organization, participate in fundraisers, introduce others to the organization, and more. Chmerkovskiy first met Childhelp’s founders Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson at an event around 2008, and after hearing them speak, he says, “That was it for me—I needed to know more.” After visiting one of Childhelp’s group homes, he shares, “That solidified for me that this is what I should be doing. Coming Clean A THERAPEUTIC SOLUTION FOR BETTER HEALTH
WHEN MANY PEOPLE HEAR ABOUT COLONIC HYDROTHERAPY, THEY’RE NOT SURE WHAT IT IS OR WHY IT’S NEEDED. With research now showing a strong correlation between gut health and overall health, it’s more important than ever to improve the cleanliness of our digestive systems. Carolyn

Colonic
(CleanColonic.com), found her own path to wellness after suffering from various health issues for many years. Now, she is focused on bringing what worked for her to others. “I’ve always had stomach issues,” she says. “Over the years, my allergens just kept growing to the point where it didn’t matter what food I ate. I would swell up and bloat. I ate a cheese pizza once, and it put me in the hospital. “I also had problems with my menstrual cycle. I was diagnosed with endometriosis, cysts, fibroids, and then, a few years ago, with adenomyosis, which caused my uterus to swell and retain fluid. My doctor told me that being on birth control would help, and it did, but then I ended up getting blood clots.” Berry went on suffering for another 20 years, and the only solution doctors had was a hysterectomy.
