Tis The Season... T
he summer season is over and that can mean only one thing, it’s Football Season! Whether you’re a parent, player or an armchair quarterback like yours truly, there’s no denying the anticipation and excitement that comes when this time of year rolls around.
We all have our favorite professional and/or college team(s) but to me, the true champions of the game are the coachs and volunteers that dedicate their time and talents to mentor today’s youth. They not only instill the fundamentals, skills and teachings of the game, but more importantly, foster an environment that promotes education and ideals such as sportsmanship, teamwork, work ethic and having fun! They offer valuable life lessons that can be carried forward and utilized into, and throughout, adulthood. This is also the mantra of the Phoenix American Youth Football and Cheer organization, featured in this month’s Giving Back article. Also in this edition, a must-read about NFL superstar Larry Fitzgerald’s philanthropic work through his First Down Fund and dedication to helping local children and the community in so many ways. An inspiration and true hero in my book! This month we also feature several local breweries and highlight their seasonal offerings. With the area’s growth and the evolution of the craft beer industry, there are so many wonderfully tasting and inventive brews to satisfy even the most discerning of palates. The Valley of the Sun has definitely emerged as a beer connoisseur’s paradise. If imbibing in one place is not your style, then you can always take advantage of a day with Arizona Brewery Tours and enjoy visiting a few local breweries. They include a behind-the-scenes tour by a resident brewer, beer sampling and lunch. Read more in our Locally Owned section.

12TH ANNUAL “CONNECTION OF HOPE” CELEBRATES ARIZONA YOUTH AT GALA BENEFITTING TEEN LIFELINE Teen Lifeline is a free peer-to-peer hotline for teens in crisis, as well as a statewide suicide awareness and prevention outreach program. In Arizona, one child dies every 7.5 days by suicide. This heartbreaking tragedy is a grim reality for children far too often. There is hope. Teens by the thousands find hope and help each year through Teen Lifeline’s services. For 29 years, the hotline has been a “connection” of hope for teens in crisis. Some call just needing a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on; others call as a last resort. Whatever the reason, Teen Lifeline and the teen counselors are available 365 days a year, always ready to listen and help. Funds raised at the "Connections of Hope" event will support Teen Lifeline’s mission of erasing teen suicide. Paradise Valley entrepreneur and philanthropist Don Tapia will be honored at the event with the Alfredo J. Molina Community Lifeline Award. This year’s fundraiser celebrates Arizona youth by highlighting the real-life stories of teens. Guests will be treated to a delectable dinner prepared by Chef Michael Cairns, live performances by Lelea & the 3Nations and Nate Nathan and the MacDaddy O’s. The event also features a live and silent auction. The event will be held on October 9th from 6-11 p.m. at the Montelucia Resort & Spa.

Where the Sun Always Shines SUNUP BREWERY SERVES UP AN ABUNDANCE OF LOCAL FLAVOR ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR | PHOTOGRAPHY MARK DURAN
A
rizona’s sunny blue skies always seem to shine a little brighter on SunUp Brewery Company, located on Camelback just west of Seventh Street. There, you’ll find a variety of handcrafted beers and cask ales, as SunUp is not only a neighborhood favorite, but a respected name among beer connoisseurs. It’s a small, friendly place that brings in a great lunch crowd during the day and a handful of locals at night who give rave reviews about their crafted beer. Mistress of brews, Mollie Luke, has been the general manager at SunUp for almost 10 years and explains the atmosphere there nicely. “What I love about working at SunUp Brewery is the customers. They have become family—it doesn’t seem like work when you’re surrounded by friends.” GREAT CRAFTED BEERS
The job of a brewmaster is to make a quality tasting beer, and when doing so, jotting down all the ingredients used to create it. At SunUp, they have recipes that go back eight years, thanks to Brewmaster Uwe Boer, whose district brewing style has earned him quite a reputation. Boer is a true brewmeister, born and raised in Germany. He lived in a town surrounded by breweries, with the local fragrance being hop or malt. He later moved to California, where his first attempt 14

at beer making was from a kit he had purchased. Later, he started to experiment with flavors, which got him even more interested in beer making. An interview with Sonora Brewing Company brought him to Phoenix, where he worked 10 years learning all he could about the business. Some of SunUp’s popular Cask Ales include Barley Wine, Amber with Elderberries, Double Trouble D.I.P.A. and Brown Ale with Molasses. These Cask Ales are naturally carbonated. I enjoyed the Amber with Elderberries and found the Brown Ale with Molasses to have a smooth yet slightly sweet taste. Also available are 14 Drafted Ales. I liked the popular White Russian and found it had a hardy taste. The Trooper IPA was milder, drinkable and is a crowd favorite. Other ales include Hometown Pilsner, a Black Lager, Hefeweizen, a Cream Ale and a Vanilla Porter, just to name a few. HISTORY OF THE BREWERY
Owner John Westberg was the original architect for the renovation of the small brick building in 2001, when Sonora Brewhouse opened its doors. At that time, the brewing of beer was done by Sonora Brewing Company. When the owners of Sonora Brewing
Company sold the business, a decision was made to expand and turn the pub into a brewery. So, in 2006, Brewmeister Boer started brewing beer at a new location, Bar 2, next door to the original building—a wall of glass gives patrons a chance to look into the Brewer’s Den and see the brewing activity. Another recent expansion brought the brewery a state-of-the-art brewing system, taking the eight-barrel system to a 15-barrel one. TASTY ACCOMPANIMENTS
The kitchen at SunUp has recently been dishing out some new creations, thanks to a Santa Fe chef. Daily lunch specials can be enjoyed weekly, and the Happy Hour “Five for Five” selections come in good-sized portions and are very tasty, including fried pickles, deviled eggs and bruschetta. “I’d describe our food as tastefully-created and well-made, with fresh ingredients that wouldn’t be expected,” states owner John Westberg. From their very diverse menu, I enjoyed the SunUp Nachos served with blue and gold tortilla chips, black beans, Cotija cheese, chipotle, avocado, cilantro sauces and small slices of steak. It can also be ordered with chicken. I can also clearly see why the House Ground Angus Burger served with blue cheese and bacon is so popular—it’s just plain really good. Next, I tried both the Red Chile Pork and the Green Chile Pork. It’s a toss up of which I enjoyed best; the red chili is spicier compared to the green chile. Both are served with warm tortilla wedges, which I unfolded and filled with chili, making mini burritos. A variety of entrees include shepherd’s pie, battered cod, chicken strips, fish tacos and salmon. Sandwiches, wraps, salads and sides give a great selection for every appetite. And be sure to save room for dessert, as the Jack Daniel’s homemade bread pudding and fried cheesecake are definite must-tries. Yes, there is always a ray of sun beaming upon SunUp, and not only on the center patio, but soon on local grocery stores, which will now carry four types of their famous beers in cans.

ootball and snacks go together like the Arizona Cardinals and touchdowns. While you might be used to serving heaping bowls of chips and veggies, along with with tasty dips, pizza and burgers to your grid iron-loving guests, it’s
also nice to sweeten the football watching experience with some cookies and cakes. Fortunately, making football-themed sweets doesn’t have to take a lot of time or money—check out these two delicious ideas:
PUMPKIN FOOTBALL CAKES These delicious small cakes will fill your home with the delightful aroma of pumpkin and spices. • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease 12 five-ounce egg-shaped muffin cups. • In a medium bowl, mix 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 t. ground cinnamon, 1 ½ t. baking powder, 1 ½ t. baking soda, ½ t. ground nutmeg and ¼ t. ground cloves. • In a large bowl combine 4 eggs, 1-15 ounce can of pumpkin, 2/3 cup packed brown sugar, 2/3 cup granulated sugar and 1/3 cup vegetable oil and whisk until smooth. • Add the flour mixture to the pumpkin mixture one-third at a time, stirring until just combined each time. • Spoon about ¼ cup of batter into each muffin cup, filling each about half full. • Bake 20 to 22 minutes, and then remove cakes from the pans. • When cooled completely, split the cakes horizontally. • Either prepare your favorite buttercream frosting recipe or use prepared cream cheese frosting from the grocery store. • Spread frosting over one cake half and top with remaining half. • Pipe “laces” on the top with extra frosting or use a tube of white icing and repeat with remaining cakes. • Makes 12 cakes. Recipe courtesy of BHG.com.
STADIUM AND FOOTBALL COOKIES It’s easy and fun to transform simple sugar cookies into adorable and colorful stadiums and footballs.
• Either make your favorite sugar cookie recipe or buy pre-made dough in tubes and roll it out. • C ut out both rectangles and football shapes and bake as directed. • W hen the cookies are cool, create the stadiums by adding a stripe of white frosting or royal icing on each long side and then sprinkling the icing with sprinkles. This will look like colorful stands of people. Then add royal green icing in the middle. Once it is dry you can pipe in white stripes and numbers. • For the footballs, cover them with brown royal icing. When it is dry, add facial features in white and black. any of us know Larry Fitzgerald Jr. as the Arizona Cardinals' elite wide receiver; a player dedicated to his team who consistently gives his all during each game. This year, Fitz’s Supper Club took place at Dominick’s Steakhouse, featuring an art auction of Fitzgerald’s personal travel photography. When speaking of the event, CEO of Dominick’s Steakhouse, Jeff Mastro, had nothing but positive words about Fitzgerald and his charity. “We thought it would be a great partnership. Larry’s a great football player and a great person and his charity does great work, so we are very happy to host the event.” And for Fitzgerald, that’s what it’s all about: giving back to the community while having a great time.
“The first time I did a charity mission was actually with Starkey Hearing Foundation, and that changed my perspective on how big and how far of a reach you can have,” says Fitzgerald. “They really continue to inspire me to dig deep, work hard and make a greater impact myself. Those experiences, those five or six missions that I’ve done with them, they have really been a game-changer for me.” True to his word, Fitzgerald took what he learned from his mission trips with Starkey Hearing Foundation and began working with Oxfam America, where he and teammate Anquan Boldin traveled to Ethiopia in response to a severe drought they were experiencing. ARTICLE ALISON STANTON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED t’s official: autumn has arrived. The temperatures are finally dropping; football and Halloween plans are in full swing, and all around town a variety of breweries are launching their fall beers and other seasonal beverages. To celebrate this beautiful time of year, let’s take a look at some of these fall brews and what they can be paired with.
I North Mountain Brewing Co. Two Brothers Brewing Co.
FOUR PEAKS BREWING COMPANY
Fall Special: Dive headfirst into the season with the Four Peaks Pumpkin Porter, a delicious and popular brew that features the flavors of fall’s most popular gourd. Also be sure to try their Single Tank Series Hoppy Pils, which Greg Ross of Four Peaks describes as a full-bodied pilsner with a balanced hop finish. Pairs well with: The Pumpkin Porter goes well with braised salmon, gingerbread cookies and Asian chicken salad, and the Hoppy Pils is the perfect complement for spicy Asian and Buffalo chicken wings, or roasted red pepper spinach salad. Paradise Valley Lifestyle | October 2015
Fall Special: Brewer Dave Burkle says OHSO has planned a handful of pumpkin ales soon to be ripe for the picking, ranging from a Golden, Belgian, Wheat and Pumpkin Porter. The pumpkin-style ales are seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and allspice. “Brew dates are scheduled throughout September, so you can expect tap dates for these throughout October. Because we brew on the nano-scale, three kegs at a time, these beers may go quickly,” he says. Pairs well with: Flour-less chocolate cake. OhsoBrewery.com
North Mountain Brewing Co. SCOTTSDALE BEER COMPANY
Fall Special: For a decadent treat after a cozy fall meal, try Scottsdale Beer Company’s Texas Tea Double Chocolate Imperial Stout, made with 11 pounds of raw, unsweetened cocoa nibs, along with chocolate and dark roasted malts, which Managing Partner Doug Ledger notes brings a rich chocolate, roasty flavor to the beer. “Even though it's over 10 percent ABV, it has an incredibly smooth and creamy finish.” Their Old Maud Vanilla Porter is named after the trusty mule owned by Scottsdale founder Winfield Scott. It is made with a whole pound of real Madagascar vanilla beans and contains no extracts or flavor additives. The beer is medium bodied, with a mild vanilla nose and a sweet vanilla finish, balanced by a solid backbone of dark roasted and crystal malts. Pairs well with: These rich, hearty brews easily stand alone, and can substitute for a traditional dessert. ScottsdaleBeerCompany.com FATE BREWING COMPANY
Fall Special: It’s a whole lot of treat and no tricks at Fate Brewing Company with their signature Candy Bar Milk Stout. “Each October we make a Candy Bar Milk Stout that has become quite well known throughout the local beer community,” notes Brewer Travis Pack. The milk stout is made with cacao nibs, vanilla beans, honey roasted peanuts and sea salt. “It received a silver medal at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival (R), and accumulates quite a bit of buzz and excitement each fall.” Pairs well with: A fun-sized Reese's Peanut Butter Cup or Snickers bar, to really accentuate the chocolate and peanut notes. FateBrewing.com
Imperial Pilsner, which is made with all German malt. “The Imperial Pilsner has a hop bitterness that blends well with its higher alcohol content. It is dry hopped with Saaz, the quintessential Pilsner hop, to give it an extra hop presence in the nose,” Berkner-Frogozo says. Pairs well with: Any of the brewing company’s “beer-centric cuisine” choices. The Happy Kraut Bier and Imperial Pilsner would complement any traditional Oktoberfest fare, such as brats and sauerkraut, pretzels or German baked goods. NorthMountainBrewing.com PAPAGO BREWING
Fall Special: Orange is certainly the color of the season, and Papago Brewing’s Orange Blossom certainly brings out the best of the staple fall shade. “Our Orange Blossom Special Beer is available year-round, but makes for a great fall beer here due to our warm weather,” says Ron Kloth from Papago Brewing. “It is a cool, refreshing 5 percent ABV wheat beer seasoned with orange and vanilla, basically like a Creamsicle in a glass.” Pairs well with: Lighter fall selections such as salmon and roasted vegetable salad, especially when enjoyed on an al-fresco patio. PapagoBrewing.com TWO BROTHERS TAP HOUSE AND BREWERY
Fall Special: At the center of all the fall tailgating parties is Two Brothers’ Atom Smasher, an oak-aged Oktoberfest-style lager, which co-owner Jason Ebel describes as a “hefty, full-bodied lager reminiscent of Marzen beers from days gone by.” Pairs well with: Hearty and spicy food, chicken, sausage, pork, almond biscotti and spice cake with pine nuts. TwoBrothersBrewing.com
NORTH MOUNTAIN BREWING COMPANY
UNCLE BEAR’S BREWERY
Fall Special: North Mountain’s Barking Pumpkin Ale is nothing short of pure fall bliss, brewed with pumpkin pie spice, vanilla beans, fine Belgian chocolates and espresso coffee beans from Grinders Coffee Company. Their Serendipitous Dark Belgian, a dark, smooth Belgian ale with deep fruit and dark caramel colors; along with the N.I.B. Imperial Stout, which is brewed with real maple syrup and has a deep, dark and rich color from being aged in 32-year-old oak barrels, adds a sweet note to their sumptuous seasonal selections. Then there’s the Happy Kraut Bier, which Candy Berkner-Frogozo describes as a Marzen-style lager with a rich maltiness that’s perfect for celebrating Oktoberfest, along with the
Fall Special: Autumn on the West Coast means infusing those signature summertime fruit flavors with a deeper, heartier undertone to transition into the new season, which is exactly what Uncle Bear’s Brewery does with their Ocean Beach IPA, packed full of simcoe cascade and centennial hops. Deep, dank grapefruit tones layer with lighter notes of grass and citrus for a crisp, cool flavor reminiscent of a chilly fall day by the water. Pairs well with: Their famous Herd’s Burger: ½ pound of sirloin beef cooked with diced onion on a flat top grill and topped with pepper jack cheese, lettuce and tomatoes on a brioche bun. Mighty Waterways COLORADO RIVER DISCOVERY LEADS THE WAY IN RIVER SUSTAINABILITY
ARTICLE DANIELLE ACCOVELLI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
he beauty of the Colorado River is undeniable. In fact, it was the river’s awe-inspiring wonder and the deep desire to protect it that inspired long-time rafting experts and friends Scott Seyler, John Vail and Mark Grisham to found Colorado River Discovery in 2006. Today, Colorado River Discovery is a flourishing 65-team member business that takes 50,000+ visitors on rafting tours each year, while maintaining an ardent dedication to preserving the river. It is also very much a family affair, with Scott’s son Korey Seyler taking the helm as general manager, and Korey’s wife Shawn working for the company as well. “We are all very passionate about the business,” says the younger Seyler. “Since 2006 we’ve been running trips on the Colorado River, and it’s been an absolute pleasure for all three of them as well as myself.”
A RAFTING ADVENTURE
To truly experience all the breathtaking beauty of the river, Colorado River Discovery’s famous one-day trips, which run from March to November, and half-day trips in the summer months, provide a rare glimpse of some of the less-traveled areas along this mighty waterway. Based in Page, Arizona, they operate a 15-mile stretch down from the towering Glen Canyon Dam to Lees Ferry; with destination stops varying depending on what trip you take. “What’s great about these trips is that they really open the river to the world. All different ages and ability levels are able to enjoy this beautiful resource and scenery,” says Korey. PRESERVING THE RIVER
To ensure that the Colorado River maintains its natural beauty and continues to be a flourishing ecosystem, Colorado River Discovery has made it their mission to stay at the forefront of sustainability initiatives—with even the smallest of efforts making a large impact when it comes to protecting the river. 22
Paradise Valley Lifestyle | October 2015
Take, for instance, their “Smart Green Systems Program,” which focuses on creative ways to recycle, reuse programs and education. They also operate a completely sustainable facility, encouraging guests to purchase reusable water bottles and use their water refill station, along with providing recyclable lunch bags. “It’s really important for us to educate not only our staff, but also our guests on how to protect this river and to really see that it is a special place,” explains Seyler. NEW HORIZONS: THE ELECTRIC RAFT
The team’s deep passion for the river has led them not only to be stewards of it, but also cutting-edge pioneers in sustainability efforts aimed at preserving it. “It was their mission to really move forward and do everything they could to protect the resource they would be offering here. They made a commitment to stay on top of the technology and research,” shares Seyler. That commitment has led them to create the first 100 percent electric raft to be launched on the Colorado River. The remarkably innovative raft is a true zero-emissions transportation device, which greatly reduces the impact on the river and the noise pollution caused by fuel motors. They even teamed up with the Bureau of Reclamations to build a charging station for the raft, drawing its power directly from the Glen Canyon Dam, and providing a completely renewable energy source through hydroelectric power. The raft, which will make its maiden voyage in Spring 2016, is just the first step for Colorado River Discovery in creating a completely sustainable way to enjoy the river. As Seyler puts it, “We really need to protect these beautiful lands; and it’s not just us, everyone needs to be stewards of these places. We need to see it as it is and leave it as it was.”

Phoenix American Youth Football DEDICATION AND DISCIPLINE: LEARNING MORE THAN JUST FOOTBALL ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
I
f the football industry decided to change its tactics by hiring players, cheerleaders, videographers and reporters who were children between the ages of 5 to 15, the National Football League might also end up with a new name: Phoenix American Youth Football (PHX AYF). I may be exaggerating a tad; however, PHX AYF is a great microcosm of the real thing, offering Valley youth the opportunity to do so much more than just play the game. The organization offers a glimpse of what life can be like in the sports industry, but instead of earning a paycheck, kids earn an education. American Youth Football is the largest youth football and cheer organization in the world, taking pride in its ideals of sportsmanship, safety and full participation. “The objectives of the program are that we build future leaders as we partner with the community. We do this through our three main programs: football, cheer and academics,” says Dee Grayer, PHX AYF executive board volunteer and national football commissioner.
LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON
Grayer played both college and arena football while earning his college degree. Later, he passed his love of the game down to his son. “We’ve been involved with youth football and cheer since my son was 7 years old in California,” says Grayer. “My son grew up in this program and now he’s playing football at Yale University. But beyond his own love of football, he loves academics, one thing we stress in our program.” MORE THAN JUST A GAME
PHX AYF encourages academics through a program called The Scholar Ballers, which hosts an annual banquet to honor students who received 3.5 GPAs or higher. This year, they plan to expand by including a few more awards such as “Most Improved.” “We want students to stay focused on their books and reward the kids based on their full-year report cards,” says Grayer. “We support our local university and encourage kids to get an education. Our partnership with Arizona State University (ASU) is incredible. Coach Todd Graham’s words are real; he is working on building a community and we have a shared vision.” Grayer is proud of the relationship that they have with ASU and appreciates how the Sun Devil football coaches and players work with them to build tomorrow’s leaders. “We are getting these kids ready for the next level; elementary school and on to high school and college. We teach them about life and football.” They also have a strong cheer program that offers many opportunities for kids to perform during games and compete. Like the football teams, they too have their own championship competition
and are included in all the events and opportunities that PHX AYF offers. If football and cheer doesn’t get your kiddo excited, there are also opportunities to learn about other aspects of the industry as well, such as film, photography and journalism. Professionals from various industries donate their time and mentor these budding media enthusiasts through the program as well. Kids can also learn about team and equipment management. “Dick’s Sporting Goods is a big supporter of ours. We are going to do tours throughout the year so that kids can see the process, like manufacturing and distribution, and how that all works,” says Grayer. He hopes to create more partnerships like the ones they have with Dick’s Sporting Goods and their media partners so that kids are aware of the many opportunities available to them in the sports industry.
Hanging with Quality Since 1984
“Our Family Values Bring You The Value You Deserve!”
THE MATH
Three thousand kids make up the 112 PHX AYF football teams and 20 cheer teams. Divide that by 15 associations and nine divisions, then add the professional mentors and board members that volunteer, plus the 13 year-round volunteers per team, and that equals a whole lot of people! “We have business managers (team moms), coaches and committee leads, everyone from CEOs to stay-at-home-moms. We have a lot of things for people to do and a lot of volunteers that go above and beyond,” says Grayer. “We also have former football players and professional athletes that coach. Everyone is so dedicated to the kids.” The parents aren’t the only volunteers in the program either; the kids are encouraged to support their community as well. For the past two years, they’ve worked with United Food Bank and have raised more than 3,000 pounds of food through their Annual Jingle Bowl Charity Games. “Respect, discipline and dedication, they get that from the game. It’s not all about the dream; it’s about the process to get to that dream. We also want the kids to think about what they are doing in school and at home. We want to open as many avenues as possible.” Learn more about joining or partnering with PHX AYF by visiting PhoenixAyf.com.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES BREWS ARIZONA BREWERY TOURS IS STIRRING UP THE VALLEY’S CRAFT BEER SCENE
ARTICLE KORY KILMER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
G
rowing up in San Francisco, John Alvarado fell in love with craft beer at an early age. However, after moving to Arizona and starting a family, for a number of years the closest he ever came to craft beer was what he could find on a grocery store shelf. An engineer by trade, John eventually found himself in the corporate world, where he was asked to help out at a handful of beer events. They reinvigorated his passion, and he found himself in awe of not only the beer, but also of the brewing community in general, and knew it was something he somehow wanted to be a part of moving forward. While having some pints on vacation in San Diego with his son, John noticed a tour as it made its way through the brewery. The group was having a blast, so the pair signed up for one the very next day. “We had one of the best evenings ever as father and son,” remembers John. “We had done all sorts of things together, like concerts and such, but this tour was just a blast, and we talked about it for a good two or three weeks after. And when we came back home, we looked around and saw that what the Valley needed was a brewery tour all its own.” After approaching many different breweries, however, John’s idea was met with a great deal of skepticism. Most simply tried to talk him out of the idea, telling him he was nothing short of crazy to think it might work. But John persisted, creating Arizona Brewery Tours (ABT) just over three years ago. Now, those would-be skeptics are happily eating their words, having embraced John and his company as an integral part of the state’s brewing community. “We are a business, of course, but this is not about the money. Rather, our mission is to introduce people to craft beer in Arizona,” explains John. “We want

them to understand how talented these brewers are and how much work goes into each glass of beer. We get people behind the scenes, touching the stainless steel and tasting samples straight from the fermenters. “There is nothing better than when we get a group who had no idea that there was a brewery less than a mile from their home. We introduce them to it, the processes behind it, and the next time we stop by, we see those same people sharing the place with their friends and family. It gives me goose bumps, and that is at the core of what we want to do.” Public tours offered by ABT include a visit to three local breweries. Each stop will include a behind-the-scenes tour guided by a resident brewer, accompanied by a variety of different samples. Lunch will be served during one of the stops as well. Up to 13 seats are available on the bus for each tour, all of which are led by an ABT driver who is not only knowledgeable about beer,
but also the city, and is quick to share some history and point out local landmarks as the group navigates their way from one stop to the next. Arizona Brewery Tours also offers a selection of private tours for groups of 2-50 people and is able to customize their tours for any occasion, from birthdays to corporate outings, weddings, reunions, bachelor/ bachelorette parties, fraternity/sorority functions or anything in between. Both public and private tours usually last just shy of five hours. There is always plenty of water and ice on the bus to stay hydrated in between stops (always a good idea), and there’s even an ABT souvenir to take home at the end. More information on Arizona Brewery Tours, including how to reserve a seat on either a public or private tour, can be found by visiting their website at AZBrew.com, or by calling them at 480.382.4677.

Parting Thoughts
Our Remarkable Brewing Community WORDS KORY KILMER
N
ot long after taking a job with a brewery in Southern Colorado, we received a phone call from a sister brew pub in Illinois. Their community had recently suffered a tragedy with the death of a young firefighter who had lost his life in the line of duty. A group of his comrades and friends were organizing a 1,123-mile motorcycle ride out to the International Foundation of Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Colorado Springs to attend the annual ceremony where his name would be etched into the wall, and were wondering if we might help out. Brewers from both locations were asked to collaborate and brew a beer in memory of the fallen firefighter, so everyone could raise a pint to their friend whether at home or on the road. We also committed to having a portion of the proceeds go towards the Firefighter’s Memorial Fund to aid other firefighters and their families in times of tragedy. Our brewer and I, along with a few others, were also invited to ride the last leg into town, meeting the group at the Colorado/Kansas state line. Thinking we were meeting only a handful of people, I remember being blown away as about 40 motorcycles rumbled towards us on the interstate, motioning us to merge into line as we headed back toward the Rockies. I do not recall how much money we raised, but I do recall sharing an emotional night with strangers, raising pints of “Beer for Boo” and

swapping stories, laughing until it hurt, and sometimes wiping away tears. More importantly, I remember feeling that I was a part of something bigger than my job, something that really mattered. Over my tenure in the brewing industry, I am thankful to have had the opportunity to help raise thousands of dollars for local charities that assist with the needs of people all over the world. Each fundraiser was unique, and every interaction was humbling. Before leaving the brewery industry last year, my career sent me to Arizona early in 2013. Just a few months later, 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots passed away while battling the Yarnell Hill Fire. Wanting to help out in any way possible, the local brewing community again got together, creating a limited-edition collaborative brew to help raise money. The end product was 120 barrels of “Heroes 19,” a brown-ale brewed with 19 hops, and the result was over $70,000 back to the families of the fallen firefighters. A neighborhood brewpub is much more than a place to grab a pint, tell stories and hang out with family and friends. A true neighborhood brewpub is a place of pride that pours the best beer in the world. Not because the experts say so, but because you say so, and because you know it is about so much more than the beer in your glass. Cheers to that!
