We Love Our Furry Friends!

F

or many people, pets aren’t just animals to have around the house, they are loyal companions, enthusiastic playmates, dedicated listeners and an integral part of the family. That’s exactly how we feel here at Paradise Valley Lifestyle, so for the September “Pet Issue” we’ve included some inspiring stories about local pet-lovers doing everything they can to say thank you to their four-legged companions.

Take, for instance, the Noble Beast, a local ma’ and pa’ pet shop dedicated to providing the best in pet food and health products. Not only are owners Alison Stanton and Marsha Vallee dedicated to pet nutrition, but they also love to give back to small community rescue shelters by hosting free and fun events like Doga (doggy-yoga) and “Spaw” Days. Also giving back to the pet community is Foothills Animal Rescue, an organization dedicated to giving abandoned dogs and cats a second chance by getting them off the streets, back to good health and into a warm and loving home. For all those pet parents out there looking to escape for a weekend, Applewood Pet Resort offers animal care like no other. Rest assured while leaving your furry friend at this stunning cage-free hotel with expansive green lawns, sparkling blue pools and spotless accommodations—they may even have a more relaxing time than you. With all the wonderful pets and animal-lovers you’ll meet in this issue, I encourage you to take some time and give your own pet a special hug—I’m sure it will be most welcome and appreciated!

SCOTTSDALE DENTIST WRITES CHAPTER FOR TEXTBOOK Scottsdale dentist Dr. Terry Work, DMD, of Dental Works Family Dentistry, is helping to introduce new techniques that may someday be used in all general dentistry offices, not just his own. At the request of Dental Learning Systems, LLC, Work recently authored a Continuing Dental Education for Life-Long Learning article that appeared in an issue of CDEWorld.com. The article was titled “CBCT Scanners for the General Dental Office.” CBCT stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography. “While I enjoy lecturing and interacting with fellow dentists, writing this article for peers knowing that it counts towards continuing education credits made it a very different kind of task,” Work said. “I had a lot of fun writing this article knowing that each concept needed to be concise and clear, with documentation to back up each and every statement.”

SCOTTSDALE-BASED CAMELOT HOMES TO REFURBISH RESIDENTIAL HOMES OF BOYS HOPE, GIRLS HOPE OF ARIZONA This summer, local builders Camelot Homes and Robson Communities, along with their partners and subcontractors, refurbished the residential homes of Boys Hope Girls Hope of Arizona. Foothills Animal Rescue

OFFERING PETS A CAGE-FREE SANCTUARY WHILE WAITING FOR THEIR FOREVER HOME ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY JON MALIS

R

escuers found a yellow Labrador pup with a serious leg injury, most likely caused by being hit by a car. He was under a year old and needed a new hip, months of rehabilitation and a safe foster home where he could heal. Foothills Animal Rescue (FAR) made this all possible by holding a donation drive to cover his care. They named this little fighter Bronco, after the football team, and eventually he was adopted into a good home. Bronco’s story is just one of thousands seen at FAR, most with bumpy beginnings and happy endings. They have rescued more than 2,000 dogs and cats in the past four years alone, and are proud to be one of about six private, non-profit rescues in the Valley to own their own facility.

A UNIQUE PROGRAM

Foothills Animal Rescue offers a cage-free environment in hopes of creating a home-like living situation. Dogs stay in rooms with other dogs and enjoy daily walks, and there are two large cat rooms, one of which is reserved for cats with leukemia. They are one of the few rescue groups who can accept cats with Leukemia, since it is highly contagious to other cats and the ones suffering from it must be quarantined until they are better. They also make special efforts to find these kitties homes. Even though the rescue center has its own facility, it also utilizes foster homes. “Space is what prevents us from taking on more. We want to create as close to a home as possible and try not to overcrowd the rooms,” says Eddie Nichols, the outreach and development director at FAR. Nichols recruits, trains and manages their many volunteers, and sets-up and coordinates their adoption events that take place in Scottsdale pet stores. “Younger kittens and puppies are in foster homes,” says Nichols. “We always have a need for foster families and would like to grow our foster program. The more fosters we have, the more animals we can save.” VOLUNTEERS

The number of volunteers in the program greatly outnumber the paid staff members. Volunteers help with everything from rescuing animals from shelters to helping them get matched with the right people. There are also dog walkers, cat sitters and volunteers to help keep the rooms clean. The volunteers also play a major role in FAR’s Resale Boutique, which helps bring in much needed funding. There is always a need for volunteers, and it’s important to FAR that their volunteers are happy. 14

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | September 2015

“We want you in it for the long run,” says Nichols. She also spends time training and finding the right job for each person that signs up to help, investing time in the volunteers and doing her best to accommodate schedules, needs and wants. FOR THE DOGS

FAR chooses its dogs with their volunteers and cage-free environment in mind, taking in a variety of breeds. The breeds must be a good match for their facility with temperaments that the volunteers feel comfortable handling. Most of their dogs come from Maricopa Animal Control, who sends a team to the shelter when they have available space. The public can also surrender pets to the rescue, but their acceptance is contingent on available space and a behavior evaluation. When someone brings in a stray, they will do their best to offer assistance to reunite them with their owner, scanning for microchips in their clinic and offering advice. “My favorite thing about this is finding homes for the animals, that’s what it’s all about. Maricopa County has a big homeless animal problem,” says Nichols. They work hard to make good matches and allow adopters to bring the pet back if it isn’t a good fit, but they are proud to say they have a low return rate. They follow up with adopted families, and if there is a problem they are happy to offer advice. They also partner with local trainers who sometimes offer help at a discounted rate. “We do our best to solve the problem,” says Nichols. BRINGING HOME THE KIBBLE

This non-profit organization is not government funded, but is supported through generous donations from the community, the Resale Boutique, and a variety of special events. One coming up is their Fourth Annual Whiskers and Wine event—a wine and food tasting with live jazz and a silent auction. The event takes place in October at Carefree Plaza. While FAR has had calls for all varieties of animals, they redirect them to the appropriate rescues and stick to what they do best, rescuing dogs and cats of all ages. Learn more about adopting or volunteering at FootHillsAnimal.org. No appointment is needed to visit FAR.

DOGS, CATS, BIRDS, REPTILES—YOU NAME IT AND THIS ONE-OF-A-KIND PET SITTING SERVICE WILL WATCH IT

A

fter eight years spent in the pharmaceutical industry, Melanie Eich knew she wanted something a bit more satisfying out of her career. She had always loved animals, and realized that if she could shift her professional focus towards them, that she was bound to find that sense of satisfaction she felt was missing. With her strong sales background, she refocused towards selling pet supplies, which got her closer, but not close enough, to the animals that she wanted to work with. Through those years, she had a plan in the back of her mind that she thought just might work. Through her interactions with people in the pet industry, and even pet owners that she knew, she recognized a potential niche for an in-home pet sitting service. Whether to help cover for a long day at the office or a week-long family vacation, she realized not everyone was a fan of traditional animal boarding services and thought she could offer an alternative. Her solution was Any Critter Sitter, LLC., a fully bonded and insured, unique pet sitting service available to not only cats and dogs, but also ferrets, bunnies, fish, reptiles, and more. “I really believe in the in-home care aspect, so I tailored the business to letting the animals stay where they are comfortable and happy, in their own environment and following their same daily routines,” explains Melanie. “I will work with the customer to create visit times that coincide with their pet’s regular feedings, walkings, medications, et cetera." All throughout the Northeast Valley—they can be seen running around Scottsdale, Cave Creek, Paradise Valley, Phoenix and beyond— Melanie makes sure that her clients’ pets receive plenty of attention, even while their owners are away. And since they are already stopping by to check on Fido, Any Critter Sitter also offers a variety of regular home sitting services such as mail pick-up, watering plants, or taking out the trash. Every situation is unique, so they work one-on-one to try to meet each of their customer’s needs. 16

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | September 2015

In the beginning, Melanie grew her business slowly, mainly through word of mouth, while still working in the sales side of the pet industry. “My first clients in those early days were people I worked with and some of my friends,” she says. “I then began to get references from many of the veterinarians throughout my sales territory that I had built relationships with. Slowly, they began to offer my services more and more, some even by posting them on their website, and it just started to take off from there.” With an average day that starts before 6 a.m. and doesn't end until after 9 p.m., it is safe to say that word is getting out about Any Critter Sitter. But Melanie knows that her unique services alone are just a small part of what her customers need to be at ease with leaving their pets behind at home. Hers is a business where communication is key in ensuring a true peace of mind. Each prospective client is initiated with a complimentary meet-andgreet, where Melanie comes to the home to introduce herself to the family and animals. While there, she will talk over what each family needs and create a client record to document all of the details—from food and medication to the specifics of the home. While the family is away, Any Critter Sitter is happy to provide updates via text, including photos, so everyone can feel at ease knowing that everything is taken care of at home. “We truly do have a strong love of animals, so the customer can be ensured that we are taking care of their pets just as passionately as they would,” says Melanie. “We are not just going in to feed them and change their litter box, we are going to treat them as though they are our own pets, and want to make sure that they remain happy and healthy while the rest of the family is away.” For additional information about the services offered by Any Critter Sitter, including service areas and rates, please visit their website at

F

or many people, pets aren’t just animals to have around the house, they are loyal companions, enthusiastic playmates, dedicated listeners and an integral part of the family. That is exactly how owner of the Noble Beast in Phoenix, Alison Chandler, felt when she first bought a puppy while battling some health issues. As Chandler focused on her own well-being, she did the same for her pooch—who came with some very strict feeding instructions. As a faithful animal mother, she would make the 45-minute trek up to North Scottsdale each week to buy food for her dog, until she realized that it was time for a change. “After a few months of driving back and forth to go buy natural dog food I thought, ‘This is silly, why don’t we have something like this in Phoenix?’” she shares. That got the wheels turning for Chandler, and after a couple of years researching pet food and products, she teamed up with her long-time friend, Marsha Vallee, to start the

And if you ask them what the best products in the store are or what they would recommend, well that all depends on the pet. “People come in all the time and ask what our best food is, and my answer is always that all of our food is the best, it all really depends on the animal,” says Chandler. Not only does the Noble Beast supply healthy and nutritious food for pets, they also carry a wide selection of natural supplements and remedies. “We learn a lot about health products from the vets who shop here and rescue people because they really know a lot. They are always dealing with sick animals and are very wise about what works and what doesn’t,” says Vallee. An array of holistic and herbal supplements line the store’s colorful walls—ranging from daily vitamins and hairball remedies to skin and coat products like fish oil. They also carry digestive enzymes and probiotics so pets can make the most of the nutrition they gain from their food. “We think of our animals as humans, and we want them to have the same health and happiness that we strive for,” says Chandler. “When you have a better product, you get a better end result, a healthier animal that lives longer and doesn’t have to go to the vet as often.” business. In 2007, the Noble Beast opened its doors as a natural pet food market, soon becoming a flourishing business dedicated to the well-being and happiness of pets. “Our mission has always been to be able to offer healthy, natural products at an affordable price,” says Chandler. “We want it to be affordable and accessible for every one, and for every income level.” YOUR ONE-STOP PET SHOP

Healthy pet food and treats, natural supplements and remedies, and a colorful collection of toys and supplies, the Noble Beast has it all—for cats, dogs and chickens alike. What started as a small food supply shop soon turned into a mecca for an array of healthy pet products as customers made suggestions and local pet companies would stop by to offer their products. The ladies also do extensive research to find the best natural pet food and health supplies, and they don’t just sell any product in their store. “We are very selective, we do our research, and we want to know where it’s made, where it’s manufactured, what the ingredients are, where they come from, and all of that,” explains Chandler. “It’s very important for us to know that, and we have been very fortunate to be able to do business with a good dozen local companies.”

From the moment you walk into the Noble Beast, its small town charm will make you feel right at home— just ask Mayor Muddy, a rescue pug that eagerly greets guests as they make their way around the store. As the go-to spot for local pet lovers, you will most likely find Chandler or Vallee happily chatting away with long-time customers and friends about their pets, children and family. “We wanted it to be like an old ma’ and pa’ general store where you come in and you know people and they know you, and you just talk about life,” says Chandler. “People like to come in here and chat, and we’ve always wanted to provide that community, down-home comfortable feeling for people.” They also do a wonderful job at bringing the community together for events and fundraisers, too. They hold pet safety and education lectures, have trainers come in on Sundays, provide anesthesia-free teeth cleaning on a regular schedule and bring in a vet clinic for shots, just to name a few. For the best of pet relaxation and bonding, they also have Doga (doggy-yoga) classes on a monthly basis and hold fun fundraising events like “Spaw Day” to pamper pets with free nail trimmings, paw massages and doggy ice cream. As avid supporters of pet happiness and health, as well as community involvement, the Noble Beast contributes to a wide-range of animal rescue and rehabilitation centers. “We really advocate for people to get animals from rescue groups. A lot of times people get puppies and then get exasperated because they are a lot of work, so they give them to shelters, and by the time they get there they are the perfect pet,” explains Chandler. “Also, a lot of times they are fostered in a home, and those foster parents really understand the animals and can help you find one that’s going to fit into your life—they really want the match to work for everyone,” adds Vallee. While the Noble Beast rotates the rescue shelters they help on an ongoing basis, they do work closely with a few smaller ones in particular. One of these is Poverty’s Pets, a local group that combs low-income neighborhoods look-

Whether it’s through providing natural pet food and health products, hosting community fundraisers and events or giving back to rescue centers, at the heart of everything the Noble Beast does is a firm dedication to providing animals with a long, happy and healthy life filled with love. “When people come in and say I have a pet with this problem and we offer them new products or food to help solve that problem, then they come back in a month or two and say the problem’s fixed, it is extremely rewarding,” says Chandler. “A lot of our customers tell us thank you for being here and being here for us, and that always warms your heart knowing that you’ve helped somebody.” It’s the satisfaction that comes from knowing they’ve helped someone and their pet that has kept Chandler and Vallee so passionate about making the Noble Beast a true down-home community pet center.

Applewood Pet Resort provides compassionate and experienced care for our four-legged friends.

ARTICLE ALISON STANTON | PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN PARSONS

L

arge, lush manicured lawns covered with soft green grass, inviting climate-controlled rooms with comfortable beds and televisions, and a sparkling pool shaped like a giant dog biscuit. These are just a few of the many amenities that pets can enjoy during their stay at Applewood Pet Resort in Paradise Valley. Clay Coady purchased Applewood Pet Resort in 1991, although the 2.5-acre property originally got its start back in 1957 as a kennel for poodles. After making some much-needed repairs and upgrades to the property, which had fallen into disrepair over the years, Coady reopened the resort in 1992. “I didn’t realize that there was such a demand from people who wanted to board their pets,” he says. From puppies that need a safe and fun place to play while their human parents are at work and cats that stay for several days while their owners are on vacation to dogs of all sizes that come in to be groomed or to visit the on-site veterinarian at Applewood Animal Hospital, the flourishing resort is truly a one-stop pet care location. “We offer boarding, and we have indoor/outdoor rooms and big suites—almost anything you could want,” says Coady. “We offer day care for dogs and large outdoor areas where they can be when the weather is nice. We also probably have the best dog swimming pool in the United States— it has a beach-entry and is 18 inches deep and has fountains and water features. Dogs love it.”

“The employees who work at Applewood Pet Resort are all comfortable with their four-legged clients and are truly dedicated to their jobs,” remarks Bobby Chrisman, manager of Applewood Pet Resort. “You have to be a pet lover to work here.” Pet owners can rest assured that their dogs will be well taken care of during their stay, and in the case of the swimming pool, there will always be a human in the water with them. In addition, the dog day care groups are broken down by size, with playgroups for puppies, toy, small, medium, large and giant dogs. The dogs also go through a thorough introduction process to ensure that they will be comfortable playing with the other dogs. Coady, who was originally a professional dog trainer, has worked with show dogs from all over the world and truly loves spending his days with dogs of all ages and sizes. “We get some of the cutest dogs here. The dogs that come in have great personalities, and it’s really exciting to watch them in the swimming pool and group day care. They are really nice and happy dogs,” he says. One of the things that helps Applewood Pet Resort stand out among the competition is the fact that the animals are not kept in kennels all day, but can go outside and romp around on the cool green grass at their leisure. “They can play on our huge lawn area and never have to go on concrete or asphalt. They are taken outside when their rooms are cleaned in the morning, again in the afternoon and at night too, if their owners want it,” says Coady. When the dogs are ready for a treat, the staff enjoys serving them Kong toys stuffed with peanut butter, sweet potato and molasses or peanut butter flavored pupcicles topped with a dog cookie. General Manager Roberto de la Torre comments on the large number of people who come from all over the Valley and state to board their pets at Applewood Pet Resort. “We’ve had people come in from Ahwatukee, Sedona, and all over,” he says. “The people here also help to set us apart,” says Joanne Prellberg, manager of the animal hospital. “Everyone is trained to interact with animals and we are so super conscious of their health and well being. It’s been great to be affiliated with such a great resort and clients who really love their animals.” Even though Applewood Pet Resort is consistently filled with happy dogs and cats—and during the recent Fourth of July holiday, a variety of parrots, hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits—people who come in for the first time consistently comment on how they would have never realized that pets were staying there. In fact, the resort is so clean and inviting that people who miss the word “Pet” on the sign have mistaken it for a resort for humans. “It’s as pretty as any resort in the world, and we’ve had people who have tried to check-in themselves,” says Coady. Applewood Pet Resort is located at 6909 E. Lincoln Dr. in Paradise Valley, for more information call 480.596.1190 or visit ApplewoodPetResort.com September 2015 | Paradise Valley Lifestyle

A Market Affair SATISFY YOUR TASTE BUDS WITH FRESH, FLAVORFUL FARE AT THE MARKET BY JENNIFER’S ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

C

hef and owner of The Market by Jennifer’s, Jennifer Russo, was originally from New Jersey before making her home in the Valley. Her father is Italian, and as a child she would always watch her grandmother cook with fascination and eager interest. So, at the age of 16, she began her culinary career doing prep work for a local catering company. From there, she went on to the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. After graduating, she interned at the Princess Hotel and the Hyatt’s Golden Swan, eventually adding Vincent’s and Tarbell’s to her resume. With all that wonderful experience, she decided it was time to open her own catering company—Jennifer’s Catering. After 17 years of earning a stellar reputation in the catering business, it’s no surprise that her first restaurant would eventually be the winner of numerous awards. The Market by Jennifer’s opened on January 16, 2014, offering an “anything goes” environment—whether it’s an after yoga meal, business lunch, small plate before the symphony, weekend brunch or a romantic night out, everyone can find the perfect item to satisfy their palette. Russo takes pride in the fact that many items on her menu are housemade, including the sweet potato chips, dressings, tomato sauce, gnocchi, pulled pork, sautéed greens and cheeses. In addition, she supports many local businesses, including the farm where they get their organic chicken, duck and goose eggs, contributing even more to the farm-to-table concept. “Locally grown, locally sourced and locally crafted,” says Russo

WARM & INVITING

As I entered The Market, I was instantly drawn to its charming, eclectic ambiance. Four crystal chandeliers grace the ceilings above small tables with comfy red chairs, giving it a very quaint and cozy feel. An open kitchen allows diners to watch the stream of activity, and a small corner bar serves up some amazing cocktails and a wonderful selection of wine. A tucked away market stand allows customers to purchase fresh eggs, coffee, BBQ sauce, cheese, beans and seasonings.

There are also many Gluten-free, Vegan, vegetarian and dairyfree items. Catering and to-go meals are also available. A WINNING TEAM

Their large wrap around patio is the perfect place to bring your four-legged buddies to enjoy a cool dish of water and watch the activity as you grab a quick bite or meet up with friends to share one of their nosh board and wine pairings. A CULINARY ADVENTURE

I was delighted with the wonderful offering of items on their extensive menu, all reasonably priced. I began my sampling with the BBQ Shrimp and fried bread. The large shrimp are wrapped in pancetta and melt in your mouth. Next, I sampled a fresh heirloom tomato and watermelon salad with ricotta salata, arugula and orange segments tossed with citrus vinaigrette— very refreshing and flavorful. I tasted two entrees: the Ricotta Gnocchi and the Beef Filet. I enjoyed the housemade gnocchi that was served with roasted pork, mushrooms, spinach and basil topped with tomato vodka coulis. The grilled beef tenderloin was juicy, tender and cooked perfectly, served with a side of smashed Yukon potatoes and baby vegetables. Make sure you save room for a dessert. I had the deconstructed White Chocolate Orange Mousse with housemade caramel corn and salted caramel—absolutely delicious.

Any successful business will attest to the importance of having good employees that contribute to its success. A key player here is Jennifer’s good friend and the restaurant’s General Manager, Richard Fiero— a very personable man with much experience. Russo and Fiero met early on in their careers when he was a server and she a prep cook at the Pointe in Thyme. Fiero is responsible for meeting with local farmers and suppliers, making sure only the finest ingredients are used. “Our heart is truly in our products,” says Fiero He also manages the “Meet the Artist” receptions held on Saturday afternoons: an artist is featured and you can ask them questions about their work, which is showcased on the restaurant’s walls. GIVING BACK

Russo and Fiero are also passionate about helping the community and surrounding areas, contributing to a number of organizations like the Joshua Tree Feeding Program, Desert Mission Food Bank and Family School, which supplies backpack lunches, along with having their own Wishing Tree program. I’m looking forward to coming back to attend one of their Wine Maker Series dinners that run through November, a Saturday afternoon “Meet the Artist” reception, a Thursday Happy Hour, or a Sunday brunch with live entertainment.

Local Limelight that their pets not only receive high-quality medicine, but are also comfortable and safe during their visit with the vet. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START VALET VET?

I wanted to be different. There are so many veterinary clinics and so many veterinarians out there that sometimes I felt overwhelmed with the idea that I was following the same crowd. That’s never been me. So, with the help of my husband and a little “thinking outside the box,” we were able to not only fill a unique need, but were also able to create a concept that is mutually rewarding. I love going to work! CAN YOU TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR MOBILE CLINIC?

House Call

INTRODUCING DR. GINA OF VALET VET ARTICLE DANIELLE ACCOVELLI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START AS A VETERINARIAN?

I

started working for a corporate veterinary clinic right after graduating from veterinary school. While I can say that corporate medicine wasn’t my cup of tea, I did learn a lot in those first two years working solo.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU WANTED TO BECOME A VETERINARIAN?

As far back as I can remember I wanted to be a veterinarian. Actually, I think for a short time after visiting Sea World I wanted to be a dolphin trainer, but that quickly changed once I realized Arizona didn’t have a beach or ocean nearby. I just always knew. I never questioned if I was making the right choice when I started filling out college applications. It’s almost like the career chose me. WHAT MAKES YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT VETERINARY MEDICINE?

Where do I start? Veterinary medicine is comprised of a great group of people, and most of us love what we do. In spite of the long hours and lower salaries, ask most of us in the field and we could not imagine doing anything else with our lives. Sure, we may 26

drive older cars and pay more in student loans than any other professional out there, but somehow we make it work. The human-animal bond is an amazing thing, and to know that we get to be a part of that relationship with our clients and communities is a feeling that can’t be replaced. I’m also secretly a nerd and being a vet keeps my head in the books, learning new things in the ever-changing world of veterinary medicine.

We have a state-of-the-art 26” mobile clinic on wheels. I am very proud of it. Inside, we have a surgical suite dedicated to surgery, a full exam room and a treatment area with full digital x-ray capabilities. We also have a mini-laboratory that allows us to preform minor laboratory procedures on-site. We are hoping to add an ultrasound on this year, too! WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING ABLE TO PRACTICE FROM YOUR MOBILE CLINIC?

I love getting to know my clients. When I practiced in a clinic, I was lucky if I got to see the same client more than once. Now, I get to see my clients routinely and have built some lasting relationships. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING AND CHALLENGING PART OF BEING

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE

A VETERINARIAN?

CONCEPT FOR VALET VET?

The most rewarding part is knowing that I can, and do, make a difference. The most challenging part, for me personally, is knowing that there are times when I can’t help. Sometimes the animal’s cancer is too far-gone, or the illness went untreated too long. I grieve with my clients as they go through their loss, and it is never easy.

I came up with the concept because I wanted to offer high-quality medicine in a convenient way to busy clients. I know that as a busy mom of two, taking my pets to the veterinarian would be very challenging, if not impossible, and I always wondered how many other people would benefit from having a service that came to their front door. Well, that question was quickly answered shortly after we began operating. We see so many different types of clients, but the majority have two things in common: they have a hard time finding the time to care for their pets because of their schedules, and they care very deeply

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT PRACTICING VETERINARY MEDICINE?

When I’m not practicing, I try to spend as much time with my children and husband as I can. I have two young children who are growing up before my eyes and I’m trying not to miss any of it. For more information visit: ValetVet.com

ARTISTIC ALCHEMY BILL MILLER ADDS A SPLASH OF COLOR TO PARADISE VALLEY WITH INSPIRED OIL PAINTINGS

ARTICLE DANIELLE ACCOVELL I PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START AS AN ARTIST?

WHAT TYPES OF WORKS DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN?

hen I was very young, my parents took a painting course at our local community center just for fun, and would work on some of the paintings at home in between classes. As I watched them paint, I found it fascinating and wanted to try. From that moment on, I have always felt that there is something magical about starting with an empty canvas and transforming it into a work of art.

I love the human form and particularly enjoy portraiture. Painting a portrait is much more than detail, modeling, composition or tonal structure; it is a psychological collaboration with the subject. One particular enthusiasm of mine is that I am eager to work with a client to create the exact portrait that they want, even a fantasy scene. For example, a beautiful client of mine wanted to have a lion in her portrait. I was delighted to collaborate with her to include a lion that she had previously photographed in her portrait.

W

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOU WANTED TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST?

Although I was a science major in college, went through medical school and eventually began practicing, at each stage I always found time to draw and paint. However, it seemed almost arrogant to think that I could shift between science and art, yet I was entering juried art shows and winning prizes, and people were buying my paintings and asking me to do commissions. So I was acting just as any other professional artist would decades ago, now I am just doing it on a larger scale.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WORKS?

Everywhere. I don't mean that as a lofty general statement, but it is true that everyday experiences and continuous observation are part of developing new subjects. I particularly like dramatic subjects and a feeling of movement. I also do a lot of work on commission, which are frequently based on photos that I take of a client for a portrait or on photography that they have done and ask me to render in oil.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CHOOSE OIL PAINTING AS YOUR MEDIUM OF WORK?

WHAT MAKES YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT ART?

Oil painting is highly technical on the one hand and very forgiving on the other. It allows for corrections and improvements, but the proportions of pigment and medium have to be appropriate in each layer to assure a durable surface. From my perspective, the most alluring aspect of oils is the absolutely lovely, flexible quality of color produced by oil pigments compared to watercolor or acrylics.

Many artists regard a blank canvas as daunting. For me, there is nothing more appealing than starting with an empty canvas, setting down an initial underlying neutral tone, and bringing a vivid image to life. Each stage— from sketch to final glaze—has its unique requirements, and each is a rich experience. BillMillerStudio.com

Parting Thoughts

The Healing Power of Animals WORDS MICHELLE GUERRERO

G

riffin Door, Griffin for short, is a Goldendoodle covered with the most wonderfully soft, fuzzy golden fur—from his cuddly head down to his cute fluffy paws. He’s 85 pounds of adorable, and absolutely irresistible to any dog lover or child who walks by. But he has a very important job to do, so he’s not always available for his fans to pet. Mom needs him to stay on task so she can maintain her mobility and balance. Griffin's mom is Lynne Lo Cascio, also a golden blonde beauty. She has the best laugh, and we can always tell when she walks into the room because the scent of flowers seems to follow her wherever she goes. She and Griffin make a great pair and have been together for about two years, meeting at a place called Power Paws, where they learned to be an inseperable team. My friend Lynne has had Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for more than 30 years. Although the effects of the MS have permeated several areas of her life, the most challenging obstacle that threatens her independence is the permanent damage to her vestibular system. With Griffin by her side, her balance challenges are almost imperceptible, but without him, she compares her balance to that of someone who’s had way too much alcohol: she’s wobbly, can’t balance well, and is at great risk of falling. His support is so important to her that she tries not to leave the house without him. When they are home, she does her best to give him time off, but he’s still always there when she needs him. “If I’m having a hard day, he’ll be a working dog inside too. He’ll take my shoes off, 34

open doors and turn the lights on if needs be. He supports me emotionally too,” Lynne confided in me one day. She recently went on a vacation, and she and her husband Sal decided not to take Griffin with them. They were both quickly reminded how much he actually does for her. Before Griffin, Lynne had depended solely on Sal to help her get around in public, and her balance is even more precarious today than it was two years ago, making things even more difficult. She always jokes about all of the equipment she’s tried for balance, saying she could put up a whole display. The only

real help she’s found, other than Sal’s strong arms, has been Griffin. “I can’t imagine what it would be like to live without Griffin,” she always says. However, Griffin isn’t her only four-legged companion. She has a huge orange kitty named Hercules, a miniature donkey named Tom Thumb that loves nothing more than to have his ears rubbed, a miniature paint horse named Mickey, and last but not least, Pebbles, her rat terrier. They each have something special to share with Lynne, whether its through helping her or just being around as a companion, and most importantly, they all thoroughly enjoy her own special brand of magic too.
