Our Investment Issue

Hi there -

April is our Investment Issue - and in all honesty, it seems that everything equals an INVESTMENT; time, treasure, talent, heart and soul! I cannot think of a more pertinent focus than upon Investing in Yourself. Everyone counts on you; your family, your pets, your business connections, your community - you are most beneficial to others when you take the time to create your best self - Right?

This is the most opportune time to reference and review a book I’m certain many of you have read, Stephen Covey’s well known “The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People”.

1. Be Proactive - assume responsibility and focus on the things that can be influenced other than what can’t.

2. Begin with the end in mind - define clear measures for success and create a plan to achieve them - in the next few hours, over the next few months, or across a lifetime.

3. Put first things first - prioritize and spend time on achieving the most important goals.

4. Think Win-Win - approach each situation looking for ways everyone can win.

5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood - listen, understand, and honor others’ perspectives - have the courage to express thoughts and feelings respectively.

6. Synergies - leverage diverse perspectives to solve problems, innovate, and achieve more than any one individual alone.

7. Sharpen the saw - increase motivation, energy, and vitality by making time for renewal activities.

Hopefully this has been a little nudge to sit still and inhale while you ponder your investment in YOU - and Don’t forget to Count the Wins, no matter how small. The little wins all add up in the long run.

Our best to you always, in all of your investments!

1 Timothy 6:18-19 - Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age…

If you need a meaningful art piece for your family to pass down, an art commission is the answer. My collectors are who inspire me most, sharing their story and vision for a large scale painting they will treasure and admire every day. This painting was created for interior designer Courtney B. Smith’s family as a showstopper for their great room overlooking the California coast. The family of four is represented by two adult cranes and two juvenile cranes flying over a vast ocean with multiple symbols of longevity in Korean art - cranes, mountains, waterfalls, and the Sun/moon.

INVESTING IN TIMELESS DESIGN

Kips Bay Showhouse 2025
Interior designer Tiffany Woodson highlights how investing in thoughtful, quality design creates lasting value in homes.

For Tiffany Woodson, the founder of Dallas-based design firm INK + ORO, interior design is not just about creating aesthetically pleasing spaces; it’s about investing in a home that will stand the test of time and reflect those who reside there. As a leading designer in both residential and hospitality projects, Woodson’s philosophy centers on the idea that thoughtful, high-quality design is one of the best investments a homeowner can make.

“I+O was founded on the fact that interior design with an interior architecture background creates much more seamless spaces with a higher level of design quality,” Woodson explains. “Many design firms work this way, but it’s generally done as two separate companies—an architect and a design firm—whereas ours is all under one roof.”

Whether designing a luxurious home or a high-end hospitality space, the integration of design and architecture results in functional, timeless and seamless spaces. INK + ORO’s  cohesive design experience is driven by the client’s unique personality, style and needs, ensuring their home is an investment in their individual well-being and happiness.

Tiffany Woodson

“Our aesthetic is defined by the client’s vision,” Woodson shares. “The one constant thread between all our projects is quality. We are constantly driven to make beautiful material transitions and details alongside a very strategic use of materials and furnishings to inspire a more holistic design approach.”

This commitment to quality ensures that each element within a home is chosen with purpose, whether it’s a unique piece of furniture or a carefully selected material. When people invest in high-quality elements that speak to them, they’re making a choice that elevates the space, adding to its value and ultimately improving their at-home experience.

A testament to Woodson and her team’s ability to adapt to different design styles, INK + ORO has a broad and varied portfolio of projects that feel personal and authentic to each client’s vision.

“The reason many clients work with us is that we don’t particularly have a style—again, it’s not MY house, I do not live there,” Woodson explains. “A home should be a reflection of the client brought to life.”

With a passion for blending various design influences, Woodson is inspired by the dynamic and sophisticated Dallas community. “Dallas is a hub for so many people from different backgrounds, which allows for us to approach each project with a unique vision,” she shares. “It’s a worldly and well-traveled community, allowing us to gather ideas from different parts of the world and reference special global influences.”

One of the most exciting projects that Woodson has worked on is the Crespi Estates. The home, still evolving, features bold, avant-garde pieces and materials influenced by the client’s love for art, fashion and travel. “We have stone boulders from Italy that make up a bar, locally built furnishings we sketched and built with the client, and one-ofa-kind pieces that make the home absolutely stunning,” she shares. “The materials used are eclectic and edgy, and the architecture is inspired by a global South African architecture firm.”

This project showcases INK + ORO’s belief that investing in a home isn’t just about picking the right furniture, it’s about the holistic approach to design, where every detail, from the architectural layout to the materials chosen, works in harmony to create a lasting, valuable experience.

For anyone considering investing in their home or embarking on a design project, Woodson’s philosophy is clear: invest in quality, authenticity and craftsmanship. When done thoughtfully, those investments can transform not only a space but a life.

PROVIDING DIFFERENTIATED OPPORTUNITIES TO DALLAS’ ELITE

During an entrepreneurship class at Southern Methodist University, a professor asked Drew Swedlund’s class who was ready to start a business. Every hand in the room went up—except Swedlund’s. “I’ve always dreamed of being an entrepreneur, but I wanted to find the right opportunity where I could build something special and make a difference for people,” Swedlund explained.  He soon realized his interests in investing and building trusted relationships were the perfect fit for wealth management.

Swedlund received a job offer from UBS PaineWebber upon graduation. There he met his business partner, Darrel Preston, and became a partner on the team at age 24. Eventually, Swedlund took a post as senior vice president and sales manager at Merrill Lynch, where he stayed for more than a decade. For a few of those years, he led the company’s Dallas training program. “We had about 80 people that I was mentoring and teaching about the business,” he says. “It was a great opportunity to give back while searching for the best young advisor to join our team.” He eventually met his business partner and successor, Lauren Turbitt. During the height of COVID, Swedlund’s

team was invited to join the New York- based Rockefeller Global Family Office. It was a unique opportunity to bring resources and investment opportunities built for families like the Rockefellers to ultra-high-net-worth clients in Texas.

Now, 22 years into his career in wealth management, Swedlund leads a team of 6 that specializes in holistic planning for business owners. “The needs and complexities of being a business owner are unique,” Swedlund explains. “There is often a fine line between their identity as a person and their role as an owner.” Swedlund helps the owners envision what their purpose will be after selling and develops plans for how they can comfortably continue their lifestyle after leaving the

business. “We help them build their entire strategic team including M&A professionals, tax specialists, estate planning attorneys and business coaches.  We remain trusted advocates through the entire process and aim to help them achieve a strategy that they’re proud of,” Swedlund says.

Rockefeller offers its clients exclusive investment opportunities, including tapping into television and song royalties, direct ownership in sports franchises, and more. “We’re intentionally trying to stay smaller, so we can bring those opportunities,” Swedlund says. He adds that “Our goal is to be the first team Texas families think of when they’re considering selling a business and need generational wealth management.”

The drink that makes you look forward to TAX DAY

INCOME TAX cocktail

INGREDIENTS:

• 1½ oz. Gin

• ¾ oz. Dry Vermouth

• ¾ oz. Sweet Vermouth

• ¾ oz. Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice

• 2 Dashes Angastura Bitters

• Orange Twist

• Glass Type: Coupe

DIRECTIONS:

1.

2. Add everything to your shaker with ice.

4. Pour into your coupe.

5. Twist your orange peel again, like you did last summer.

7. Enjoy being done with taxes.

8. And a good cocktail.

The Income Tax Cocktail likely popped up during the Prohibition party scene of the 1920s. Its exact origin story remains a bit blurry, but it was definitely a hit in speakeasies.

The name? Well, it's like a cheeky nod to the idea that sipping on this cocktail might be more fun than paying actual taxes! Made with gin, sweet vermouth, orange juice, and a dash of bitters, it's like a boozy adventure for your taste buds, with hints of citrus and herbs. Despite its vintage roots, the Income Tax Cocktail still brings the party vibes, transporting you back to the roaring '20s.

GIVE TREES

a Second Life

Donate your fresh, healthy cuttings to your Dallas Zoo’s BROWSE program.

The best time to trim trees in Texas is in early spring, just before the buds start to grow. Before you let your landscapers haul off your big tree limbs and trimmings, consider donating these fresh, healthy cuttings to your Dallas Zoo’s BROWSE program.

“Browse” describes the tender shoots, twigs, and leaves of trees and shrubs that animals use for food. Many animals at the Dallas Zoo, like elephants and giraffes, eat hundreds of pounds of browse every single day. Giraffes will even strip the bark off the branches to eat!

Browse donations have many other uses besides food and are used as enrichment in many of the habitats. Smaller hoofed animals, primates, and other mammals enjoy playing with or gnawing on small branches. Various sized branches can be used for perching in habitats and rodent-like species can use it to keep their teeth healthy.

“A year ago, we revamped our browse collection program based on the opportunity to source more of our browse locally, which is better for our animals, more cost effective, creates less waste, and allows the public to connect with and contribute to the Zoo in a new way,” said Kerri Slifka, Dallas Zoo’s Curator of Animal Nutrition.

While not every variety of plant or tree is accepted, many species common to Dallas are on the list such as Bradford Pear, Mulberry, Cedar Elm, Honeysuckle, Sycamore, Palm fronds, and more.

DONATION SPECIFICATIONS:

1. Whole branches are best, five to eight feet in length.

2. Only fresh branches. No deadwood, and no dead leaves.

3. No tree trunks or thick limbs. Exception: large root balls can be donated if digging out an entire tree.

4. No trees or plants that have been treated with pesticides, even organics, as it may be harmful to the animals.

Visit https://www.dallaszoo.com/support-the-zoo/browse-programdonate-trees-for-animals/ for a complete list of accepted trees and to complete an electronic form to coordinate your donation. Submit your information prior to scheduling your yard work to schedule a pickup that ensures your branches are fresh for the animals to enjoy.
