DALLAS OPEN MOVES TO THE STAR IN FRISCO
PARK CITIES FAVORITE, THE GEM

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to you all and our Health and Wellness issue is here - we hope that you can dive in and effortlessly get back in touch with your self. When YOU are good, then so it is for all that comes up for your family, careers and friends. In this issue we share some local experts and experiences to assist in your taking care of YOU!

Tough question #1 - What is Health, really?

- The state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Tough questions #2 - What is Wellness, really?

- The holistic integration of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, fueling the body, engage the mind and nurturing the spirit.

So, now that we have that all straightened out (oh my) - how do we all know what it takes to actually attain this balance? We all have lives, healthy eating and exercise habits (to create or practice), families, pets, parents, careers, and …. Don’t forget dreams. I know personally this last point gets all covered up so easily and I am trying to diligently “Get-It” this year to take a breath, be still and allow Dreaming to become a reality. It is so easy to get wrapped up in everything and everyone else and lose track of yourself. Hopefully this year, let this be THE YEAR to gain some hyper-balance upon all of the above and whatever pops up along the way.

All I can share is the satiety of inhaling deeply, taking the time to allow the instant reactivity to pass, and step forward in peace - no matter the direction involved at the instant of the moment. Please always try to remember to allow HIS peace to take over and remember:

“Not in your own strength, for it is God who is the while effectually at work in you, energizing and creating in your the power and desire, both to will and work for His good pleasure, satisfaction and delight.”

TEXAS SWING

In February, The Dallas Open moves to The Star in Frisco with big stars and big plans.

ARTICLE BY DAVID MUSCARI

For years Dallas-Fort Worth cultivated a reputation as a center for professional tennis success. From the 1960s through 1980s, it was the home base of Lamar Hunt’s World Championship Tennis.

WCT produced tournaments around the U.S. featuring the sport’s brightest stars, including Arthur Ashe, John McEnroe and Boris Becker. The season ended annually with a marquee tournament in Dallas.

Jeff Turpin’s family saw it all up close. “(We have) been involved in tennis for over 60 years,” he says. His dad, Jack Turpin, was an All-America at Rice before founding the legendary T Bar M Racquet Club in Dallas and around Texas. Jeff’s two brothers played at Rice and SMU respectively.

Jeff was an All-America at SMU before playing four years on the ATP Tour. “Tennis has been foundational to our family,” says Jeff, who, as a kid, served as a ball boy for the two Ken Rosewall-Rod Laver WCT Finals, which many hardcore fans consider the greatest matches ever played.

But when WCT shuttered, big-time tennis in Big D disappeared. That is until 2022 when the Dallas Open moved to town. The event seemed uniquely positioned for fresh success, as one of just 10 ATP Tour events held in the U.S. that year.

Every great sporting event needs a face. For The Dallas Open it was tennis star John Isner, a Highland Park resident. Isner’s goal was to make The Dallas Open a mainstay on the tour. “Everyone knows how big tennis is at the recreational level,” says Isner. “I think when you can partner the highest level of professional tennis with all the people that love to play our sport, it’s going to be a perfect mix for the DFW area.”

Fast-forward three years: Local tennis fans will tell you The Dallas Open has revved up. The latest leap takes place on February 1-9 when the tournament moves from the intimate confines of SMU’s Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex to The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

“WE

CALENDAR.” –JOHN ISNER

EVERYONE’S

“The Dallas Open had three great years at SMU and should only get better (at The Star) with higher ranked players, a bigger venue and more people able to watch in person,” says Turpin. “Tennis players love to play in front of a full house.”

The move to the Frisco arena was tied to an upgrade from an ATP 250 to an ATP 500 event. “There are requirements from the ATP on stadium size, seating capacity, player amenities, and this was the venue that was able to meet all of

those requirements,” says Tournament Director Peter Lebedevs.

It also boasts its most competitive field ever, representing a bold shift that has attracted top-tier talent like two of the world’s top American tennis players, Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe, who committed last October to compete in this year’s event. They join 2024 Dallas Open Champion Tommy Paul, the world’s No. 12 player, and Casper Ruud, the world’s No. 8 player, both confirmed to compete.

“The first three years at SMU were incredible,” says Isner. Due to the tournament’s success and the growth that DFW can (provide) tennis, the tournament was awarded a 500-level event,

which upped the stakes, including more prize money. But there is a minimum amount of seating that ATP 500 level tournaments must adhere to, and, Isner says, unfortunately, SMU could not provide due to space restrictions inside their indoor tennis center.

The 2025 version of The Dallas Open offers players an opportunity to increase their ATP rankings while competing for a share of $2.8 million. “Every February, the Dallas Open 500 is in town,” says Isner.

“We want this tournament to become a staple in everyone’s calendar”

Turpin believes a big tournament would help regain leadership status. “It is a worldwide sport and growing again in the U.S.”

What about a vision for the future? Where do organizers expect The Dallas Open to be a decade down the road?

“I see us with a larger stadium, and we can do that in The Ford Center … by changing the way we put the court together,” says Lebedevs.  “I also see us attracting even more of the top 10 players in the world, because they will see what we’re able to provide to the players, the amenities … everything.”

Founder of Park Cities fitness studio

One Lagree, Jennifer Eitches shares how she built a community that empowers clients while fostering a strong sense of connection.

Community

in Motion

When Jennifer Eitches opened the doors of her fitness studio One Lagree in the heart of the Park Cities, she was on a mission to combine her passion for fitness with her desire to build a close-knit, welcoming community. Now, just a few years later, her fitness studio has become a Dallas staple, known for offering the innovative Lagree Method in an inclusive, boutique environment.

“A few years ago, I had just moved to Dallas and felt that there was a void in the fitness community—that void was the Lagree Method,” Eitches says. “My two primary goals were to make friends with others who love Lagree and to create a gender-neutral space where clients could bring their husbands or boyfriends without it feeling overly

feminine. There’s a common misconception that Lagree or Pilates is just for women, but it’s truly for everyone.”

The low-impact, high-intensity nature of the Lagree Method is one of the key reasons clients keep coming back to Eitches’ studio. “You get an amazing workout while being gentle on your joints,” she explains. “We never jump; we don’t speed through; we move as slow as possible so that our muscles are constantly engaged and exhausted.”

Along with the draw of the workout itself, One Lagree’s success stems from the community it fosters—it’s an environment where everybody is welcome and newcomers are encouraged. “We provide hands-on adjustments and modifications for all fitness levels so that any new client can feel comfortable,” Eitches says. “We strive to be a welcoming part of the community where we help our clients reach their fitness goals, whatever stage of life they may be in.”

To her, the studio’s supportive atmosphere is a reflection of the Park Cities itself, and One Lagree is dedicated to giving back to the neighborhood that’s embraced it. “I love how engaged and involved the community is,” Eitches shares. “I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to donate to local schools and charities in the Park Cities, and am eager to continue to help out wherever I can.”

In addition to giving back to her community, one of the most rewarding aspects of Eitches’ work is seeing the growth and transformation of clients—several of whom have even gone on to become instructors. “I love hearing how Lagree has positively impacted our clients’ lives!” Eitches beams. “Over half of my team originally started as clients. It’s incredible to see how our community not just transforms physically but also inspires individuals to take on leadership roles within our studio.”

Having launched her studio just two weeks after the birth of her first child—an incredible feat CONTINUED

“I LOVE HEARING HOW LAGREE HAS POSITIVELY IMPACTED OUR CLIENTS’ LIVES! OVER HALF OF MY TEAM ORIGINALLY STARTED AS CLIENTS. IT’S INCREDIBLE TO SEE HOW OUR COMMUNITY NOT JUST TRANSFORMS PHYSICALLY BUT ALSO INSPIRES INDIVIDUALS TO TAKE ON LEADERSHIP ROLES WITHIN OUR STUDIO.”

to say the least—Eitches’ entrepreneurial journey, like most, wasn’t always smooth sailing. “Starting One Lagree was quite the adventure!” she laughs. “Balancing the demands of a newborn with building a business was definitely my biggest challenge.” Yet, it was this very challenge that fueled her passion to build something sustainable and meaningful.

Since its inception, One Lagree has continued to evolve to meet the needs of its clients, as Eitches is dedicated to creating a studio accessible to all. “We recognize that many of our clients have demanding schedules—whether they be busy moms, college students or entrepreneurs—and have thus continued to add more and more class times throughout the week,” she shares.

As a busy mom and business owner herself, Eitches deeply understands the importance of an active and balanced lifestyle, as well as having a support system that can hold you accountable—thus, the framework for One Lagree.

“Whether it’s helping my daughter practice her cheer routine or kicking around a soccer ball with my son, being there for my kids is what’s most important to me,” she says. “I’m thankful to have a wonderful, supportive group of friends who share these values. Britney Everett—also known as Stay Fit Brit—is not only one of my best friends but one of my greatest cheerleaders. While we operate in different fitness spaces, we both share the desire to empower others and stay active for our children.”

For those looking to begin their fitness journey but don’t know where to start, Eitches offers a piece of advice: “Be patient with yourself and find something that you enjoy. Consistency is key, so find something that will motivate you to keep coming back.” And if that “something” turns out to be the Lagree Method, Eitches and her team are waiting with open arms.

As she reflects on the past few years of One Lagree, Eitches is full of gratitude for her team and the community they’ve built together. And as the studio continues to grow, she’s dedicated to expanding their reach with the opening of a second location. “It’s an exciting step in our journey, and I can’t wait to bring the One Lagree experience to even more people,” Eitches says.

From new mom to fitness entrepreneur (and in the span of a couple weeks, at that), Eitches’ entrepreneurial journey has been one of passion, perseverance and a deep commitment to community.

SO FRESH AND SO CLEAN

The Gem’s two locations serve juices, smoothies, and small bites with certified organic and non-GMO ingredients.

Leslie Needleman says that when her friends would visit her during her breast cancer treatments in 2009, everyone had to try the green juice she made. “I had to dive deep into what a healthy lifestyle should look like so that once all of my treatments were over, I was making sure that the environment was a healthy one and that my cancer wouldn’t return,” she says. Food became medicine—green juice and kale salads were among Needleman’s favorites during that time—but she quickly realized that food and juices with clean and organic ingredients were hard to come by in the Dallas area.

Recognizing a void, she and her longtime friend Mary Kathryn Bass set out to create a space where customers could trust the ingredients in juices, smoothies, and small

bites. They launched juice bar and restaurant The Gem in 2012. “We knew the importance of this clean, organic, and healthy lifestyle, and wanted to provide it for others,” Needleman says. Now, the green juice she made for her friends during her cancer treatments, since named the Green Glow, is among the venue’s best sellers.

The Gem began as a pop-up store near Inwood and Lovers, and now, thirteen years later, it has grown to two brick-and-mortar locations, one

on Preston and Forest and one inside Preston Center. Both draw regular customers from as far as Waxahachie and Frisco. “People are hungry, literally and figuratively, for some place to come for juice and clean food,” Needleman says. The menu features juices and dishes made with certified organic and non-GMO ingredients sourced from around the country. Highlights include the Mushroom Veggie Pureé (MVP) Soup, a pesto made from pine nuts and jalapeños, quinoa with arugula and mushroom, and a chia pudding. “The lentil soup that we still serve today, Mary Kathryn would make that for me and leave it on my doorstep 15 or 16 years ago,” Needleman says.

The same trust and care that’s evident in Bass and Needleman’s friendship has guided their business partnership. “We know that each other can handle all things that relate to running this business,” Bass says, adding that generally, Needleman, who had a previous career in marketing, covers The Gem’s branding and outreach, while Bass addresses H.R. and details in the kitchen. The pair say they are “always open” to finding the perfect spot for a third location, but that in the near-term, their goal is to continue to impact the local community as much as they can. “It has ripple effects,” Bass says. “We feel proud to impact our little space.”

CHANGING LIVES WITH SERVING LIFE CHIROPRACTIC

Serving Life Chiropractic opened in 2010 establishing itself as a trusted clinic in the Park Cities, offering chiropractic care for clients of all ages—from newborns to seniors. Today, Denisa Weber, D.C., leads a team of Texas board-certified chiropractors. She talked about services, goals, and rewards.

PCL: SINCE OPENING, WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU MADE?

DW: What started as a one-person, part-time job, has grown into a 9 member team, including four full-time doctors. Our growth has provided opportunities to streamline systems and processes and create easier access for our families to treatment. We value community and have been able to host events connecting families we serve with other healthcare providers we collaborate with in caring for patients.

PCL: WHAT ARE YOU MOST ENERGIZED ABOUT THESE DAYS?

DW: The impact and lives changed for the better in our community excites me most. Making room for more families to experience positive health changes through nervous system-based chiropractic care requires us to train as a team to provide the best care and culture in our practice.

PCL: WHAT ARE THE MOST REWARDING MOMENTS FROM WORKING WITH FAMILIES?

DW:  There isn’t a day we aren’t filled with gratitude.

PCL: WHEN IT COMES TO A QUALITY CHIROPRACTIC CLINIC, WHAT DIFFERENTIATES SERVING LIFE?

DW: Approach, technology, and specialties: As nervous system based chiropractors, our job is to help clear the communication highway (the nervous system) via specific and gentle inputs or adjustments tailored to each individual to allow the body to do what it was

designed to do--express health. Fifty percent of our current practice is prenatal or pediatric; specialize in care for those populations, and people of all ages and genders. Having a clear, supported nervous system is the key to changing someone’s health trajectory for the better. Nervous system-based chiropractic care is easy to incorporate into a family’s health strategy.

smart SWEETS

The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious.

Combine:

• 1 cup wheat flour

• 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled

• 2 cups oats

• 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

• 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 2 tablespoons chia seeds

• 2/3 cup raisins

• Optional: chocolate chips as desired

• Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.

Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa.

Add this mixture slowly to combine:

• 2 eggs

• 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter

• 1/2 cup honey

• 1 banana

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.

Quinoa BREAKFAST Bars

Frozen PEANUT BUTTER Bites

Danger ahead: this snack is amazing. It’s the easiest of the bunch and also satisfies a sweet tooth craving. This can be whipped together in just 5 minutes and makes just a small amount. Feel free to take creative liberty here with your amounts, but if you make it to this recipe, they are around 90 calories per bite.

1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each.

2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice.

3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite.

4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy!

Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.*

These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning.

Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed.

Ingredients

• 1/4 cup milk

• 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder

• 1/4 cup maple syrup

• 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter)

• 1 cup almond flour

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

• Chocolate chips as desired

Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist.

SCOTT STALLINGS’ WORKOUT

Like many impressionable kids with giddy enthusiasm for their favorite sport, Scott Stallings discovered his interest for golf at the young age of 3.

But it was the “aha moment” for his LOVE of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors.

Upon realizing “that Woods wasn’t that much older than him,’’ Scott set himself into overdrive to “get it together” and tapped into his natural drive to be one of the best.

He trained his way through achieving allstate golfer and Dean’s List status in high school. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer.

In 2016 he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete.

THE PRO GOLFER’S FITNESS JOURNEY

With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night.

“I came to the realization that it was no one’s fault but my own. The excuses and finger pointing led back to me, and once you take ownership, you take power in that,” Scott says.

“The voice within gave me some scary realizations that I always hated the doctor, and that they would tell me something was wrong. I learned a little information goes a long way, and that saved my health. Make one change today, and make another one tomorrow, and you’ll never look back.”

Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed.

“You only get one body,” he says.

Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life.

He still was driven to be one the best PGA Tour players and the best family guy he could be, and he would do all of the discovery, the surgeries, and the daily changes all over again to continue living his best life.

“I legitimately have some great people push me and stay around me,” Scott says.

Scott has traveled the world over, playing on some of the best courses around, from Augusta National twice, to courses across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the hope to cross the Middle East and more stunning destinations in New Zealand off his global travel list. His next “bucket list” trip?

Today, Scott happily shares healthy time with his wife and kids and is leading up The Scott Stallings Kids Play Free Junior Golf Initiative, a partnership with the Tennessee Golf Foundation to bring free junior golf to the Knoxville area.

THE WORKOUT BASICS :

KETTLEBELLS

Cast iron or cast steel ball with a handle attached to the top; ideal for exercises that combine cardio, strength and flexibility training.

BARS AND WEIGHTS

A long iron bar on which weight plates are placed. Weights come in a variety of styles, including weight plates, barbells and dumbbells.

DUMBBELLS

Short barbells, usually held in each hand

MEDICINE BALLS

Weighted balls roughly the diameter of the shoulders that are used for strength training and rehabilitation

STALLINGS’ PRIMARY EQUIPMENT: HIS TOP EXERCISES:

KETTLEBELL POWER SNATCH:

Uses ground force to leverage the kettlebell upward, then the shoulder, arm and back support the weight as it gets pushed overhead. Also a great cardio exercise and trains the body for a good golf swing.

KETTLEBELL HALO:

Start by holding the kettlebell upside down at chest height, then lift the weight to head height and rotate it around the head like a halo in both directions. This exercise focuses on shoulder mobility— which is important for a good golf swing— and warms up the muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder girdle.

CLEAN TO LUNGE:

First, the kettlebell is lifted from the ground to shoulder height. Then, the foward lunge loads weight into the legs one at a time, which happens from the backswing to the downswing. The exercise increases strength in calves and forearms, which is essential for a powerful swing.
