hen Brad and Corrinn Howard took over Parker Lifestyle earlier this year, I had limited availability. My parents, who live in Arizona, were dealing with some health issues, so I knew I needed to have flexibility in my schedule. As editor of the magazine for the previous year, I knew I couldn’t continue in that same capacity. So I want to give a special thanks to Brad and Corrinn for working with me and finding a way that I could continue to be a part of this great publication. I am now working as the assistant editor, which means that I edit the copy and contribute articles on a regular basis. It allows me to spend fewer hours working on the magazine. But that doesn’t change how I feel about Parker Lifestyle. It is so different than all the others publications that are delivered to Parker mailboxes. First and foremost, Parker Lifestyle offers way more than advertisements and coupons. It contains 50 percent local news. That’s a lot of news about you and your neighbors that you might not find anywhere else. In fact, an article that I wrote for this June issue is about a Parker family that has three generations living here. I came up with this story idea more than a year ago, when I first met with Tom and Melissa O’Malley of Affinity Photography. You might recognize their names. They provide a lot of photos for us. When I met with them in 2015, Tom told me his parents and his brother all live in Parker. At the time, I thought their family might make a great Father’s Day piece some day. I never forgot that thought. I hope you enjoy reading about the three generations of O’Malleys, as well as all of the other wonderful features, briefs and calendar items that Corrinn and I worked hard on to give you a good picture of life in Parker.

She came to Koko with the goal of sculpting her arms and tightening her waistline. Her FitCoach, Sarah, built a strength and cardio training and nutrition program to jumpstart weight loss, and coached her through short weekly workouts. In just 6 weeks, Jess lost 15 pounds, and hasn’t looked back. “I love watching Jessica’s transformation,” said Sarah. “She met her goals, lost weight, is eating healthier and feels happy about how she looks.” Her fiancé sent a note thanking Koko for helping Jess regain her confidence and energy levels.

AWARD-WINNING EDUCATOR CONNECTS STUDENTS AND SURVIVORS TO INSPIRE SOCIAL CHANGE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY REBECCA BERRA
B
ridging the gap between the safe, prosperous life that many high school students in Parker enjoy and the terrors of poverty, war and human rights abuses experienced by millions of people is no easy task. This is the mission undertaken by Dr. Mark Thorsen, social studies teacher at Ponderosa High School, who endeavors to make his students aware of the many different struggles around them, locally and throughout the world. “Social studies is one of the easiest subjects to make relevant for students. It allows us to think about solving problems. It is a really important foundation, regardless of what they go on to pursue,” Thorsen explains. “Engaging the students is not difficult. Each of them wants to feel like their voice matters. They want to be a part of something bigger. If we provide the opportunity, they will rise to the occasion.” Over the past 20 years, Thorsen has been involved with various sports and clubs at
16
Parker Lifestyle | June 2016
Ponderosa, including football and wrestling. More recently, he has supported activities that encourage philanthropy and social action among students. “My biggest shift in thinking was when my sons were born,” says Thorsen. “I have three boys. I want to make the world a better place for them.” Thorsen now sponsors Ponderosa’s UNICEF club. The club’s members organize fundraisers, like Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, and increase awareness of social issues affecting the world’s most vulnerable children. “It’s important to understand the relationship between our community and our school. We invigorate one another,” Thorsen says. Every fall, Thorsen organizes the school’s Human Rights Awareness Week. Last year’s event featured speakers who have survived atrocities, such as human trafficking and genocide; authors; social change innovators; and leaders from A Path Appears, Children’s
Future International, One Nation Walking Together, Restoration Project International and other non-profit groups. “Social change is always made up of many tiny acts,” explains Thorsen. “It’s not about waiting for one big person to come along. Just talking to other people is a significant act. When students take something they are passionate about and talk to their parents, siblings and friends about it, they are including more people in the conversation. It’s important to give them an outlet. “Individual students learn differently, and they change over time, but what drives them is consistent. They all want to matter. Recognizing and fostering that drive is the joy in what we do,” Thorsen says. Thorsen’s efforts were recognized in March 2016 at the Douglas County School District’s Apple Awards ceremony, where he was named Secondary Educator of the Year.

ot many 8-year-olds get to climb the same trees or run through the same terrain as their fathers. As a third-generation Parker resident, Sean O’Malley gets to do that frequently. “He’ll come up here and start running,” says his father, Tom O’Malley, who grew up in the home his parents purchased 37 years ago on 15 acres in Ponderosa Hills. “He’ll start chasing the squirrels and the different animals.” Sean’s grandparents and Tom’s parents, Ted and Sue O’Malley, moved to the area in

early 1979 so that Ted could work as a flight instructor at United Airlines’ Denver Flight Training Center. Although Ted went back to f lying planes out of different United hubs and eventually retired in 2003, he and Sue never left. And two of their four sons, Tom and Ted, live in Parker with their wives and three children. Looking back on the early years, Ted remembers that Parker Road was a two-lane road and Hills Country Market was the
only grocery store. To “do big shopping,” the family would drive to the nearest King Soopers at Parker Road and I-225. “We wore out a couple of cars,” Ted says. “We were always driving to go find anything because it wasn’t here in Parker. It was a much smaller community. The people that were out here, they were here because they enjoyed the open spaces, the beautiful views. That’s why we came here too.” Tom attended Pine Lane Elementary, Parker Junior High and Ponderosa High
schools. He graduated from Colorado State University in 1997 and returned to Parker in 2001. “I came back to Parker because I had such a positive childhood,” Tom says. “I like how there’s space out here. It’s close to the city, but there’s still that small-town feel. And that’s what I enjoyed, and I wanted to raise my family in a similar situation.” Tom and his wife, Melissa, have lived in their home near Lincoln Avenue and Jordan Road for 15 years. Sean was born at Parker Adventist Hospital in 2008. “I just love it - the fact that we’re so close to family and Sean gets to see his grandparents. My brother and his family still live here," Tom says. "There’s a tight-knit group here, and it’s just nice to have family so close." As the owners of Affinity Photography, Tom and Melissa are quite active in Town events. “Growing up in Parker, that’s why right now I’m involved with our photography business in a lot of Town things,” Tom says. “We work with the Creative District. We photograph for the PACE Center. I just love being a part of what’s happening in Parker. “We’re just trying to make a difference, trying to be a part of it,” Tom says. “Parker’s kind of an ideal place to live.” No one plans to leave any time soon. “This is not the time in my life to move away from family,” Ted says. “This was just a great place to live and it still is.” Melissa agrees, saying: “Raising our family in Parker gives us a safe place to live at the same time as running a successful business in the Denver metro area. You can get the best of both worlds.”

Three branches of Douglas County Libraries (DCL) will open this year in Parker, Lone Tree and Castle Pines as part of the No Leaf Unturned campaign, which was originally announced in 2013. The first facility, located at 360 Village Square Lane in Castle Pines, celebrated its grand opening on April 21. The Lone Tree branch will open July 9 at 10055 Town Ridge Drive, The Parker branch, the largest of the three, is expected to open at 20105 E. Mainstreet this summer. The Certificate of Occupancy is expected to be completed on June 27, according to DCL Facilities Manager Rick O’Dell, who says it will take at least four to five weeks after that until the facility is open. The Parker library will have a unique form, derived from the shape of the site, to leverage views to the west and over the 26

Town of Parker’s planned park and plaza northwest of the building. When it opens, area residents will enjoy a facility that is twice the size of its current location, growing from the current 20,000 square feet to about 40,000 square feet on two floors. And all library patrons will appreciate the fact that the new building will have 163 parking spaces, about 2½ times the number at its current location, with almost 40 additional spaces at the adjoining park. It also will have lots of high-quality interactive features for children and a creativity lab for people of all ages and skill levels. For example, there will be a fun, interactive children’s area that includes what library staff call a baby pool, which is not an actual pool but an area where infants can crawl around, protected by a rounded bumper to ensure baby safety. That space will be adjacent to a structural wall that encourages youth to climb and explore, says Nanci Marr, the library
district’s marketing and communications supervisor. And there will also be a kids’ corner with retractable/movable walls so it opens into larger space. Parker’s library will also have The Studio, a media lab with state-of-the-art software and equipment, including a green screen and professional-quality editing equipment, that will be available for library cardholders who want to create various products for fun or business purposes, including manga or anime videos, musical compositions and short films or videos. Library staffers also envision residents recording stand-up comedy routines to upload to YouTube, digitizing old home videos, recording video resumes and converting those old VHS tapes to DVD. Thanks to a generous donation, The Studio will grace the name of the Cherry Creek Valley Rotary of Parker, the first organization to lend its name to the Parker facility. Father’s Day Grilling
Done Right TIPS AND TECHNIQUES ARTICLE CHEF BRANDO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
C
hef Brando here. As I think about Father's Day, I think about great memories with family and friends and lots of time spent at the grill.
There are times when we have prepared great feasts and other times where grilling left us all feeling like it is better left to professionals. Here are some techniques and tips to make your Father's Day a success: • Start out with a clean and hot grill. • Pull steaks or chicken out of the fridge 30 minutes to rest before grilling. • Season steaks or chicken well before grilling. • Use a thermometer to check doneness. • Don't forget you can grill veggies. • Wrap veggies in a foil packet with oil and seasonings that you like. METHOD TO THE MADNESS
• Heat grill for 10 to 15 minutes, then use a wire brush to scrape off any pieces left from the last time you used the grill. Then, using tongs and a paper towel doused in oil, oil the grates several times to prevent food from sticking. • Let meats come up to room temperature (you have 2 hours to cook the food without worrying about spoilage, but 30 to 45 minutes is ideal). • Use a combination of any mixed seasonings on your meats for a period of time. You do this is to get the most flavor into the meat before grilling. Weber's grilling seasonings make great gift ideas for Father's Day and can be found in any grocery store. • Veggies can be a combination of the following: Onions with 1 teaspoon butter or bullion beef base and butter. Corn with salt and pepper, cilantro and lime, and oil. Squash, such as zucchini and yellow squash, with basil or Italian seasoning and olive oil. Wrap any one of these suggestions in foil and put on the grill while the grill is heating up. After the grill is hot, turn the grill down to medium and put the veggies on the lower-heated side to prevent burning. www, summer. Finally. After the snowfalls of this winter and spring, it's nice to have our sunshine state back. June is such a great month. We've planted our flowers, cushions are on the outdoor chairs, the fire pit is ready and deck evenings are calling us. We know that a long stretch of good weather has finally arrived, so let’s enjoy our outdoor oasis wherever it is. As much as I love my outdoor space, I still want my indoor space to have that spring/ summer organic feel that I am looking for outside. I know that my job is to see everything as a decorating opportunity, but there is an actual science to it as well. In the book, Environmental Interiors, authors Mary Jo Weale and James W. Croake explain that the way we enjoy our habitat is based on the senses. When we are outside, we enjoy the smells, sounds, touch and tastes associated with nature. Our 32

home’s interior offers the same “senses” in a different way. Eyes see pattern, color and light. Our noses smell fresh flowers, grass or candles. The ears sense conversation, birds, music or quiet. We want those senses stimulated inside or out. So, there it is. My justification for decorating inside and out. Seems legitimate. Either way, you will love it. Trust me. Feeling inspired? Let's use a few suggestions to carry this great weather feeling inside and out: • Change a centerpiece to candles in lanterns with rocks as the base. Add some moss for interest. Clay pots with sand inside are perfect candle holders for tea lights on the kitchen table. Plant grass in small containers and place them around the house for additional greenery. • A strawberry pot is useful as a utensil holder or storage container in the kitchen. It's unexpected and adds a spot of color with outdoor whimsy.
• You may not need a fire indoors, but stacked logs (my favorite is birch) at your fireplace with timer candles look amazing. Gas fireplace? Stack the logs upright in a metal container or vintage-looking bucket next to the fireplace. • Watering cans in a cluster of all shapes, sizes and colors make great arrangements for above a bookcase, a mantle or a long shelf. • Artificial plants still in your house? You can switch them out with cut branches from your trees or sticks from your local nursery. No fake flowers. Get as organic as you can. • Your garden boots or rain boots look great sitting by the door, especially if they are a bright color. All these suggestions incorporate those senses we yearn for and enjoy when we are outside. Make your home habitat inside and out as comfortable as you can in the most natural way. CATCH AND RELEASE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BRAD HOWARD

f your family wants an exciting day catching fish on a river, look no farther than Minturn. Located just past Vail, the town's population has slightly more than 1,000 residents but offers plenty of opportunity for an incredible family outing. Minturn Anglers is a guide-owned company that has permission for you to catch fish in 30 different watersheds throughout Colorado's mountains, including the Eagle River, Colorado River, Roaring Fork, South Platte River (Dream Stream, Deckers, Urban) and Blue River. The Minturn Anglers team works 365 days a year in all weather conditions and has gained the reputation of catching some very large trout. Matt Sprecher, owner of Minturn Anglers, knows that every customer will be satisfied. "We have changed the industry in Colorado by merely offering the highest standard of service for all our customers. No matter their age or experience level, we handpick each and every guide to ensure that we offer the best experience while fishing with us. In addition to our convenient store locations (including one in Parker) and variety of gear, our array of guided trips and access to water with Colorado's largest and well-versed guide staff will remind you that your fishing adventure is in good hands." Minturn Anglers' guide Blake Knisely truly enjoys his job. "It allows me to combine one of my life's biggest passions with my career. I enjoy getting other people on fish almost more than I enjoy catching them myself. I love seeing that smile on someone's face who's just landed their first trout on a fly rod." Whether you are an expert or beginner, a guided trip will surely give your group an enjoyable day. Even the experienced fisherman will grab some tips from these guides. Knisely reiterates the helpfulness of having a guide, "It's important to have a guide because your time is usually limited, whether you're on vacation or a weekend warrior. Even as a skilled angler on a river

Rather than spending most or all of the time you have to fish trying to figure out where the fish are and what bugs to throw, your guide will streamline this process and maximize your time spent on the water. Guides (with boats) have the necessary tools to approach the river most effectively, both floating and wading. Lastly, fly fishing is a lifelong learning process where any angler, regardless of experience, learns A VARIETY OF YEARsomething new almost every day (casting, technique, ROUND TRIPS FOR entomology, fish behavior).
