Library Opening Highlights September's Activities

SEPTEMBER 2016 publisher

Brad Howard | Brad.Howard@LifestylePubs.com

S

eptember is such a wonderful time of year, especially in Colorado. The weather is cooler, the Broncos are back on the field and there are numerous activities for residents to enjoy - everything from taking in a high school football game, to Parker Oktoberfest on Sept. 16-18, to the 25th Annual Colorado Mountain Winefest in Palisade on Sept. 15-18. As Parker residents, we get an added bonus this September when the Parker branch of Douglas County Libraries opens on Sept. 24. The third of three new county libraries, this one was worth the wait. The opening of the 42,000-square-foot library has special meaning to me because of my mother and my mother-in-law. First, my mother. She was an elementary school librarian who taught me the joy that can be found in reading books. As a child, I was always reading books that she suggested. She passed away earlier this year, but I know she would have enjoyed all that the new Parker branch has to offer its readers, especially the children. For my mother-in-law, who lives here in Parker, I’m glad she will no longer have to endure the parking situation at the old library. As a frequent library patron, I'm sure that she will appreciate the additional parking and drive-through book drop, as well as the 20 percent increase in the library's collections of books, movies and more. As a Parker area resident of about 25 years, I personally love the fact that they included a hitching post to honor Parker's horse heritage. So take special notice to the left of the front door, where you'll find the hitching post and accompanying bench. What makes this even more special is that the post and bench were made from beams from the old Quonset Hut, or Community Building, that was a gathering place and gymnasium in O'Brien Park from December 1950 to October 2013. In another nod to Parker history, the library staff is using a library tradition of gathering residents together to move books with a bookworm. It's been used in previous Parker library moves, so it's nice to see it happening again. So enjoy the fall. And if you’ve got time, sign up for the bookworm by RSVPing at DouglasCountyLibraries.com/NewsEvents and keep a Parker tradition alive!

all in the Rockies brings clear blue skies with puffy white clouds during the day and cool crisp nights. The mountain air is turning cooler and seems fresher. Wildlife is moving down from the high country. People, on the other hand, are flocking up to the high country in their annual search for gold, mountainsides full of gold-leafed aspen trees, that is. And there is no better place to see the change of seasons, with bright gold and orange aspens set against dark green firs, spruces and pines, than the Guanella Pass Scenic and Historic Byway, above Georgetown. The byway winds its way out of Georgetown and into the Colorado alpine tundra. Approximately a half mile up the road, above Georgetown, is an overlook where one can peer between the trees to see Georgetown and its lake below. On the way to the top of the pass, one crosses Clear Creek several times as it rushes and

16

tumbles down the mountainside through Excel Energy’s hydroelectric complex that supplies electricity to the Denver metro area. There are several picnic sites and campgrounds along the road, as well as numerous turnouts and wide spots on the shoulder where leaf peepers can pull off and drink in the view of golden trees and steep mountain sides. Photo ops abound. If you are lucky, you might even see bighorn sheep. At the top of Guanella Pass, you'll find parking lots with trails leading off into the tundra. With a sharp eye, limited crowds and a bit of luck, one can find white-tailed ptarmigan in this area. Ptarmigan, a species of alpine grouse, change the color of their feathers from brown in summer to solid white in the winter to blend in with their alpine environment during the changing seasons. To the east, across the paved road, is the Sawtooth, a gray, cold rock formation that lies between Mount Evans (14,264 feet) and Mount Bierstadt (14,060 feet). The top of Guanella Pass can be reached in approximately 30 minutes on the 11-mile asphalt road that is in good condition. From the top of the pass, one can continue south, down to the

town of Grant on US Highway 285. From Grant, one can return to Denver and view aspen along the way or head south on Highway 285 to Kenosha Pass for more spectacular views of the changing colors. Another option is to view the changing aspen from the Georgetown Loop Railroad that leaves from its depot in Georgetown. The railroad corkscrews up and over itself on its way up the valley to Silver Plume. For more information on departure times and rates, go to GeorgetownLoopRR.com. Many people simply choose to return from Guanella Pass to Georgetown and wander the streets lined with colorful Victorian buildings filled with shops and restaurants. Some check out the local museums. The Hamill House Museum is well worth the price of admission. See HistoricGeorgetown.org for hours of operation, cost and information. If you are hungry for Italian food at lunch or dinner, try Mountain Buzz Café and Pizzeria, 1200 Argentine St. in Georgetown. The C.C.C. Calzone, with sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage and cream cheese baked in a golden, crunchy crust, is absolutely delicious. To get to the road up Guanella Pass, go west on I-70 to Georgetown. Take Exit 228 and go left under the highway towards the roundabout. From Parker, on a good day, it takes an hour and 20 minutes. Be sure to stop at the visitor center for information, gifts, coffee and restrooms. Then head into Georgetown. It can be a bit tricky finding the start of the road up to Guanella Pass, but if you follow the signs, you shouldn’t get lost. If you arrive in Georgetown around 10 a.m., you may want to fuel up at Cake, located at the corner of Sixth and Argentine, before heading up the pass. Cake sells assorted fresh-baked pastries; the cinnamon rolls, which Cake advertises as being as big as your face, are covered in sweet, white frosting. But they sell out fast, especially on Sundays.

Garrett Estate Cellars' view from the vineyard.

COLORADO wine country OUR VERY OWN WINE IS AMONG THE BEST ARTICLE SUSAN CORMIER AND CORRINN HOWARD | PHOTOGRAPHY CORRINN HOWARD AND CRAIG CORMIER

C

oloradans have been growing grapes and making wine since way back in 1860, when settlers reportedly brought European stocks to plant small grape vineyards near Penrose and Canon City. By 1882, Paonia, Hotchiss and Vineland were also home to various vineyards and orchards. Then, in 1890, Gov. George Crawford planted 60 acres on Rapid Creek, above the Town of Palisade, to begin the creation of what is now known as the Grand Valley American Viticultural Area. By the turn of the century, an estimated 1,035 farms were involved with grape production. Then prohibition hit. In fact, Colorado adopted prohibition in 1916 – four years before the rest of the nation - marking the beginning of the peach industry in the Grand Valley. It wasn’t until the early 1970s that grapes were re-introduced to that area. Colorado State University led the way after receiving a grant from the federal government. Designed to look at the viability of growing wine grapes throughout the Four Corners area, the grant led to the birth of the current industry in those four states. One of the test plots that was planted in 1974 is located directly in front of what is now Colorado Cellars, formerly Colorado Mountain Vineyards, which was founded in 1978 in Palisade. The industry in Colorado has grown from the one winery in 1978 to five wineries in 1990 to more than 120 today all across the state. Here is a brief look at some of Colorado's finest: 18

Parker Lifestyle | September 2016

GARRETT ESTATE CELLARS Located in Olathe, owner Mitch Garrett has worked hard to distinguish Colorado wines since he and his parents started growing grapes on their family farm in 2008. With about 35 acres of vineyards, Garrett Estate Cellars produces wines that are second to none. Garrett's goal is to expose Colorado to its own great luxury - wines that rival the best not only in the United States but also the world. "We actually have Californians coming to the Western Slope to purchase wines," states Garrett. "In a blind comparison, people choose our wines, which contain 99 percent Colorado grapes." However, when Colorado residents return from his vineyard, the buying habits do not always follow. "We're available at most Parker liquor stores, and we have just not seen the support that warrants the respect deserved," Garrett says. "I actually sold more bottles after removing the 'Made in Colorado' label, and I cannot understand why our own state won't support our grapes. "I'll put our wines against any in the world," Garrett continues. "In fact, we know that our reds and whites will make any wine drinker happy." Colorado has the grapes and the talent to produce excellent wine, Garrett says, adding that "we just want a chance to show people that our wine is the best. "We will go head-to-head with any vineyard in the world to show you how great our wines are," Garrett continues. "My mom wanted to create something that makes people from Colorado proud, and she did. People from California and the rest of the country are seeing how wonderful our wines are." Garrett Estate Cellars is a proud partner of Parker Lifestyle magazine and has a true passion for sharing knowledge about Colorado wines so that the state's grape and wine industries can sustain growth. "Garrett Estate wines are some of the best that I've ever tasted," says Lifestyle Publisher Brad Howard. "Mitch wants his family's business to continue to give back to our fantastic state, and he does so with red and white options," Howard continues. "If someone hasn't given their wines a taste, they should try pick up a bottle and do a blind taste taste with their favorite wines."

GRAND VALLEY VINEYARDS The Palisade/Grand Junction area continues to provide some of the state’s finest wines and is home to some of Colorado’s oldest commercial vineyards in existence. The wineries’ tasting rooms give visitors a vast array of wine options, many grown with only Colorado grapes – a feat that can become quite difficult during freeze years, such as 2013 and 2014.

the 25th Anniversary

Colorado Mountain

winefest

Colorado Winefest runs Sept. 15-18 in Palisade, offering everything from food and wine pairings, chocolate and wine tastings, educational seminars and more. The “Festival in the Park” takes place on Saturday, Sept. 17, and is the state’s largest and oldest wine festival, featuring dozens of Colorado wineries, live music, a grape stomp, chef demonstrations and seminars. Please note that all Mountain Winefest events require a separate ticket, and all ticket holders must be 21 years of age with valid ID to enter.

If you go a little off the beaten path, you’ll find two of the state’s older wineries – Colorado Cellars and Carlson Vineyards. As the state’s oldest winery still in existence, Colorado Cellars was the first to produce and sell Colorado wines made from Colorado grapes. Current owners, Richard and Padte Turley, along with their sons, Kyle and Cory, produce more than 20 wines – everything from sweet fruit wines to semi-sweet Rieslings and a Gewurztraminer, to dry white and red wines. Its tasting room on E Road offers a pleasant setting for tasting its selections. While unlimited sampling used to be available, the winery has recently started to limit the number of free tastes – due to too many people taking advantage of their generosity without purchasing any wine. Just down the road is Carlson Vineyards, founded by Mary and Parker Carlson, who say it is the third oldest in Colorado. It has been serving up an incredible array of wines since 1988 out of its tasting room on 35 Road. The Carlsons and their staff offer unlimited samplings of their many wines. Visitors are often surprised by a special treat – their cherry wine, which is put in a glass with a melted dark chocolate on the rim for a wonderful taste sensation. They will give you tips and recipes for enjoying their wines, which run the gamut from sweet fruit wines to several Riesling and Gewürztraminers and a Chardonnay to a sweet baby red that goes great with barbecue.

These older, established wineries have been joined in recent years by some new additions, such as Red Fox Cellars on 36 Road, the area’s newest addition, which opened in 2014. Scott and Sherrie Hamilton moved to Palisade from Littleton after purchasing their vineyard at the end of 2011, experiencing the freezes of 2013 and 2014. With sons Chad, Kyle and Eric helping, the family quickly learned how to re-grow grapes after a freeze. Because of the type of grapes they grow, Red Fox currently focuses on red wines. But they are set to release an agave-barrel Chardonnay in the near future, and are working on two carbonated fruit wines. To learn more about the great wines that Colorado has to offer, visit ColoradoWine.com and plan a tour and tastings that are friendly and informative. Mitch Garrett checks out the grapes in his vineyard.

ouglas County Libraries is inviting residents to celebrate Colorado's craft beer industry, which has more than tripled in the last five years. With more than 6,000 workers and an economic impact of $1.15 billion in 2014, the industry continues to grow. "We're still opening at a rate of more than one a week," says Ed Sealover, a reporter with the Denver Business Journal who has written two books on Colorado's craft brew industry - "Colorado Excursions with History, Hikes and Hops," and “Mountain Brew - A Guide to Colorado's Breweries.” Colorado has been at the forefront of the industry. Boulder Beer, which produced its first batch of beer in 1980, is the oldest craft brewery in America, Sealover says. It took another eight years for the second brewery in the state to open - Wynkoop Brewpub - after a change in Colorado laws and a long struggle to find financing. About 30 banks and even the mother of Wynkoop partner Gov. John Hickenlooper wouldn't provide financing. But the six Wynkoop partners persevered and Wynkoop - the state's first brewpub and second brewery - "was a big hit," Sealover says. Shortly thereafter, Carver Brewing opened a brewpub in Durango, and the industry "grew from there." "By the early '90s, when you see companies like New Belgium and Left Hand coming along with a host of other breweries that aren't around right now, it really picked up steam throughout the state to the point where we have somewhere around 350 breweries around the state of Colorado right now." The phenomenon has spread to the suburbs. Douglas County is no exception. "Douglas County is a great example of how the craft brewery movement has spread in recent years," Sealover says, noting that only three breweries were located here in 2011 - Elk Mountain Brewing Company in Parker, Rockyard Brewing Company in Castle Rock and Lone Tree Brewing in Lone Tree.

Cherie Ellingson and Douglas County Libraries' Kerri Morgan (right) help out at the 2014 event at Hall Brewing Company.

"It's really settled into more of a mainstream movement. Everybody wants to try these new beers. Everybody wants to drink locally too," Sealover says. "People are almost demanding that they have a neighborhood brewery now, and Douglas County is really meeting that demand." Douglas County Libraries is on the bandwagon. For the third straight year, the library district is hosting a brew tour to highlight the county's breweries. Those who join the free tour and visit five of the 10 participating breweries in the month of September - and complete their brew tour passport – are entitled to a commemorative beer glass courtesy of DCL. Last year, about 415 people completed the challenge with an estimated 1,000 people visiting the breweries, and attending special events with beer tappings and speakers, says Kerri Morgan, DCL program and events supervisor. Morgan says there really isn’t a typical participant. “We’ve seen people come in that are couples in their mid-20s that are so excited that they’d finished their brew tour and they got their glasses, and we have folks who are in their 60s, empty nesters and retirees coming to our events and going around to all the breweries,” Morgan says. “It’s a really mixed bag, which is great. It shows the demographic diversity of Douglas County.” For more information about the tour or to download a passport, visit DouglasCountyLibraries.org.

Renovate & Refine

THE

FIVE MINUTE

CENTERPIECE

M

y grandmother always had a fresh flower arrangement on the dining room table. She actually had a weekly, scheduled delivery so she was never without. I still remember the inviting aroma of fresh flowers in her home every time we came for Sunday dinner. Great memories, but different times. Today, my life is more like "do we have anything for dinner tonight?" and "are there any clean socks?" Life is more survival mode when juggling family, kids, work, life, friends, etc. Like I really have time for a floral arrangement? Seriously? Well, I have a quick hack that makes me feel like a super mom-Pinterest star - and it's done in 5 minutes. Really, it is that easy. Items needed: mason jar, recyclable water bottle, scissors, flowers (any kind) and filler (lemons, limes, corn, dry beans, dry peas, whatever you like). When I do the grocery shopping, I always check the floral department for the clearance bin. Typically, every week there is a bundle that is greatly reduced, which is perfect. Grab those cheap flowers. Or if you are lucky enough, pick them from your yard. I always have mason jars on hand. I think they are pretty awesome for just about everything. Next, the standard 16.9 fluid ounce water bottle, which is everywhere, fits inside the standard mason jar perfectly for this hack. I feel confident you can find scissors. Lastly, the filler. The pictures show you limes, lemons and dried peas. Really, whatever you have is great. You could use sand, and it would be cute.

22

Parker Lifestyle | September 2016

Cut the top of the water bottle so that it fits inside the mason jar, but so you cannot see that there is a water bottle. Just line it up with the top of the jar and cut about a 1/2 inch below jar height. The water bottle is actually your vase. Put the empty water bottle in your mason jar. Slice your lemons or limes (or whatever you chose) and insert them in between the plastic bottle and the jar. They should be snug, but you should be able to adjust them up and down. Put as many in as you can all around, while still keeping the integrity of the water bottle. Put your f lowers in the water bottle - which is inside the mason jar already - and add water to the jar. Try to not let the water you add to the lemon/lime part get into the water bottle. It will hurt the f lowers. Bonus points: tie a little ribbon or burlap at the top. Viola - you now have a beautiful arrangement that took minutes and looks great. It will last about a week. I made these for a bride's prenuptial dinner. They are great, budget-friendly centerpieces for picnics, birthdays, weddings, or like my Grandma, Sunday dinner with the family. Enjoy. Jessica Duce JDuce Design

FOOD FIGHT!

CHEFS COMPETE TO BENEFIT THE SCLERODERMA FOUNDATION

ARTICLE CHEF BRANDO

D

enver’s favorite foodie event is back. The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation will host the chef competition of the year! The competition will be held on Sept. 7 at the BAC Appliance Center in Englewood. Four returning chefs are ready to take on the newcomers and turn up the heat. Attendees have a chance to judge the chefs in three categories - appetizers, main courses and desserts, which can be topped off with an artfully-crafted cocktail from the mixologist competition. The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation is dedicated to promoting education, advancing research and providing patient support for this hard autoimmune disease. Scleroderma creates a chronic hardening of the skin and connective tissue, and often causes fibrosis and serious damage to internal organs. More women develop the disease than men, with female patients outnumbering male patients about 4-to-1. It commonly occurs between the ages of 30 and 50. Symptoms include tightening of the skin, joint

24

pain, exaggerated response to cold (Raynaud's disease) and heartburn. Treatments include medication, physical therapy and surgery. Last year, I paired up with Chain Reaction Brewing Company for the Scleroderma Food Fight, and we were part of a live auction that auctioned off a specialty beer paired dinner for eight. As part of the live auction, Zach Christofferson and I had two different ladies competing for the beer dinner, so we agreed to do two separate dinners rather than just one. We raised $950 each, with 100 percent of the money going to the foundation. On the menu? We prepared a pink peppercorn saison vinaigrette for the salad that was paired with an orange cream ale that went really well with the fresh blue cheese and candied pecans and dried fruit. I also did an aged white cheddar mushroom risotto with Scotch ale for the second course. Lamb mint meatballs, paired with a Belgium rye stout, were the main course with herbed potatoes and sautéed veggies. To finish off the meal, I made a chocolate caramel pudding with an imperial milk stout from Chain Reaction, which was a true finale for the meal. AUTOMOTIVE AMY: Lady in the Fast Lane 2016 CHEVROLET TRAX LTZ ARTICLE AMY COTSWORTH | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

he Chevy Trax is a relatively new addition to the market, and consumers may not have seen a great number on the roads since its release in 2015. However, Chevy has built this small crossover SUV in the innovative tradition of Chevy's other SUV classes, such as the Traverse and the Equinox, which will surely have buyers taking notice. With the release of the 2016 model, Chevrolet provides options that ideally target the active, urban chameleon. The styling offers curb appeal, along with a higher profile visibility. Offering compact car-like parking capability, impressive maneuverability, and nearly limitless cargo and seating configurations with a 60/40 split bench rear folding seat, the Trax can help you complete any task or errand, whether it's cruising garage sales, mountain biking or taking everyone out for a night on the town in style. Speaking of styling, the 2016 Trax sports appealing, athletic and smooth body lines with a wide selection of striking exterior colors. The LTZ trim level features upgraded 18-inch aluminum wheels and comfort-oriented interior appointments. Clearly distinguishable as a Chevrolet with the bowtie badging and bold grille, this versatile vehicle will turn heads, as well as turn on a dime in dayto-day driving conditions. In fact, the front wheel drive model proved quite capable in the snowy weather it was subjected to. With the all wheel drive option, the Trax has the potential to carve its very own niche in the market with many other popular models in its class, such as the Subaru Crosstrek, the Buick Encore, the Nissan Juke and the Ford Escape. All of the safety features you expect from Chevy are also present, including 10 airbags, child security features and rear park assist, in addition to the rear camera, now standard in all new vehicles. The 7-inch Chevrolet MyLink radio with color touch display screen is easy to use, with Bluetooth connectivity and music streaming capability.

The Ecotec Turbo 1.4 liter, 4-cylinder engine does not lack for power. Fuel economy is enviable at 26 MPG city and 34 MPG highway, for a combined 29 MPG average. Chevy takes exceptional care of its vehicle owners with Chevrolet Complete Care, including two maintenance visits, 5-year or 60,000-mile 24-hour roadside assistance and courtesy transportation, 5-year standard OnStar Basic Plan on most models, and 6-month OnStar Guidance Plan and Automatic Crash Response. Available in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels, the starting price for the Chevy Trax is $20,300; well equipped at $25,230. The LTZ model, which I had the pleasure of driving thanks to GM and Chevrolet, came in at an MSRP of $26,125. t was a cool August morning before dawn. The journey to the sunflower patch was not a short excursion. While rounding the last corner of the tired dirt road, the first glimpse of pre-dawn light appeared upon the far-reaching field. The bright yellow faces of the flowers began to rise as if to salute the sun. The morning dew lay quietly on each petal while waiting patiently for the sun to soak up each drop of moisture. As the sun began its ascent into the wild blue yonder, each sunflower stood at attention reaching higher and higher. It was like a symphony where the musicians raise their instruments simultaneously as instructed by their conductor. Each delicate flower was sun-kissed as the petals met the warmth of the fiery yellow ball. As the intensity of the reds and oranges appeared in the east, the reflection of light towards the western sky painted a dramatic scene of purple and blue hues. At that moment, it becomes a visual feast; a moment to take in the beauty and enjoy. Creative energies begin to make decisions. Broad panoramic shots or macro-photography? Capturing the glistening yellow flowers as the sun hits each petal perfectly. Turning on a dime to capture the unveiling of magnificent back-lit flowers. Swiftly working like a skilled surgeon to change camera settings. Looking. Absorbing. Clicking. Breathing. The morning light was phenomenal as it danced playfully across the sun-drenched field. An artist must work quickly as the perfect light disappears just as quickly as it arrives.

COLOR ADO

HOPS BOOM ON THE WESTERN SLOPE WORDS CORRINN HOWARD

C

olorado is no stranger to great brews. The MillerCoors empire expands across nearly 600 acres in Golden and brings some of the nation’s favorite beers. Still, there is no question that Colorado has experienced an explosive craft beer movement. This also means that Colorado has responded accordingly and hops yards have popped up in regions all over the state. Few industries are growing as fast as Colorado’s craft beer industry, which means a great deal for tourism and local attention to Colorado-grown hops. Whether you are a beer drinker or a wine aficionado, Colorado has a diverse climate of crafted libations. If you are looking for Colorado local brews, there is a variety right here at home at Brick House Tavern + Tap, Hall Brewing Company, Barnett & Son Brewing Co. and Elk Mountain Brewing Inc.  For you wine lovers, Purgatory Cellars offers a unique blend of great flavors in their destination tasting room as well. Check out Colorado wines in your favorite liquor stores to find Colorado-made wines, including those from Garrett Estate Cellars. But most importantly, discover more about Colorado’s crops and exploit the bold tastes and qualities of Colorado’s unique climate.
