Building a Thriving Community: The Power of Investment, Arts, and Visionary Leadership

Investing in our city and community is not just about building infrastructure—it’s about fostering an environment where every individual, family, and business can thrive. A city’s growth and success are rooted in the relationships we build, the ideas we cultivate, and the support we give to local initiatives that make our community vibrant and resilient.

Supporting the performing arts is a crucial part of this investment. The arts bring people together, spark conversations, and serve as a reflection of who we are as a community. Whether it’s a play, concert, or local dance production, the performing arts connect us to our shared experiences and provide opportunities for creative expression and cultural exchange.

At the same time, historic preservation ensures that our past is never forgotten. By safeguarding our city’s historic landmarks and buildings, we honor the stories and legacies that shaped us. This helps create a sense of identity and belonging, while also providing an authentic foundation upon which to build our future.

Good conversation is the glue that binds all these efforts. It’s through open dialogue that we exchange ideas, challenge assumptions, and collaborate on solutions. Whether in formal meetings or informal gatherings, meaningful conversations fuel progress and foster understanding. It is through these discussions that we can support a future that is equitable and sustainable.

That’s why it’s so important to have a mayor with vision—someone who is not only focused on short-term fixes but committed to long-term, innovative solutions that benefit all. A strong, forward-thinking leader ensures that every decision is made with the future in mind—one that balances growth with the preservation of what makes our city special, all while striving to create a more inclusive and sustainable environment for all residents.

Investing in our city, supporting the arts, preserving our history, and engaging in thoughtful conversations are the pillars upon which a thriving community is built. Together, we can shape a future we can all be proud of.

Patronizing

MAYOR D.C. REEVES

Since taking office in November 2022, Mayor D.C. Reeves has emerged as a dedicated leader focused on the growth and revitalization of Pensacola. As a Pensacola native and a father, his leadership is guided by a personal commitment to the city’s future, blending his passion for the community with a forward-thinking approach to urban development. Reeves’ vision is rooted in creating a city that respects its history while embracing opportunities for growth and innovation.

A key priority for Mayor Reeves has been revitalizing the city’s existing infrastructure. Under his leadership, Pensacola will see a substantial investment into public spaces, including parks, community centers, and civic buildings. These improvements range from updated basketball courts and new water fountains to the redesign of the Hollis T. Williams Greenway and renovation of the Cobb Center.

Reeves emphasizes that taking care of existing assets is critical to creating a city that’s both functional and beautiful. By focusing on infrastructure maintenance and revitalization, Reeves is preparing Pensacola to grow in a sustainable, responsible way while preserving the quality of life for its residents.

Affordable housing is another cornerstone of Mayor Reeves’ vision for Pensacola’s future. He understands the importance of building a city that accommodates residents at all income levels. “We need housing at every level,” he said, recognizing that the city’s growth must be inclusive and accessible.

In addition to addressing immediate housing needs, Reeves is working on revitalizing historically overlooked neighborhoods. The redevelopment of the old Baptist Hospital site is one example of this effort. This ambitious project aims to bring not just new housing but also jobs, businesses, and community amenities to an area that has long been underutilized. By focusing on smart, sustainable development, Reeves is helping to shape a Pensacola that thrives both economically and socially.

The arrival of the American Magic sailing team is a pivotal moment in Pensacola’s history. One of Reeves’ most significant accomplishments is his role in helping, along with other key players, to bring the American Magic sailing team to Pensacola. In his efforts to convince American Magic to make the city its new home port, Reeves has positioned Pensacola as a central player in the world of competitive sailing. The team’s involvement in the America’s Cup—one of the most prestigious sporting events globally—will elevate Pensacola by bringing national and international attention to the city.

This move represents much more than just hosting a world-class sailing team; it’s part of a broader effort to position Pensacola as a hub for maritime activities,

“HOW WE TREAT THE CITY NOW will affect HER LIFESTYLE HERE,” HE REFLECTS, acknowledging the responsibility HE FEELS TO CREATE A CITY WHERE HIS daughter—and other future generations CAN THRIVE.

sports tourism, and economic development. The American Magic team’s presence will likely lead to an influx of visitors, sponsorships, and media attention, all of which will help to fuel the local economy and create jobs.

A key component of Reeves’ economic strategy has been the revitalization of Pensacola’s waterfront and downtown areas. This is reflected in projects such as the redevelopment of the Maritime Park , which aims to create a vibrant space that blends residential, commercial, and recreational opportunities. Pensacola’s recent recognition as the North American hub for Foiling Week highlights the city’s growing prominence in maritime events and sports tourism.

By enhancing Pensacola’s waterfront, Reeves is helping to create a space that can serve as a destination for both locals and visitors. This includes improving public amenities, supporting local businesses, and ensuring that the city’s infrastructure can accommodate an influx of tourists. These efforts align with Reeves’ broader vision of sustainable, long-term development that benefits both residents and businesses alike.

While his focus is on the future, Mayor Reeves also recognizes the importance of preserving Pensacola’s rich history. A key example of this is his commitment to saving the Gibson School, a historically significant building in the city.

Reeves’ approach to growth combines respect for the city’s history with a forward-thinking strategy that encourages modernization. By finding a balance between preservation and development, he is ensuring that Pensacola retains its unique character while adapting to the needs of future generations.

What sets Mayor Reeves apart from other leaders is his deeply personal investment in the city. As a father, he sees the long-term implications of the decisions made today. “How we treat the city now will affect her lifestyle here,” he reflects, acknowledging the responsibility he feels to create a city where his daughter—and other future generations—can thrive. This personal perspective shapes his leadership style, making him more attuned to the needs of families and individuals in the community.

Mayor Reeves’ vision for Pensacola’s future is focused on long-term growth and sustainability. His leadership is not about making short-term fixes or undertaking projects that will have a fleeting impact. Instead, he is focused on creating a Pensacola that will remain vibrant and thriving for generations to come. His investments in infrastructure, housing, and public spaces are laying the foundation for a future where Pensacola remains a city that people want to live in, visit, and invest in.

As Pensacola continues to grow, Mayor Reeves is working to ensure that the city’s expansion is inclusive. He is committed to making thoughtful, responsible decisions that will benefit all residents while ensuring that Pensacola remains a place of opportunity and prosperity.

Mayor D.C. Reeves’ leadership is helping to shape a bright future for Pensacola. By balancing modern development with historical preservation, focusing on affordable housing and inclusive growth, and helping to bring world-class groups like American Magic and associated projects to the city, Reeves is ensuring that Pensacola remains a vibrant and prosperous community for generations to come.

A SHOW of SUPPORT

Patronizing the Performing Arts in Pensacola

Pensacola’s world-class performing arts organizations add to the rich cultural fabric of our city. Whether on stage or out in the community, these beloved non-profits delight and inspire thousands each year. With recent budget cuts, these organizations face a combined loss of more than $1.2 million in state funding. Now, more than ever, they need our support.

“There are three important ways you could help us this spring, including coming to an event and bringing a friend, making a financial donation to support an arts not for profit organization that serves a mission you believe in, and encouraging your elected officials to support the arts at the local, state, and national levels.” - Bret Barrow, Executive Director, Pensacola Symphony Orchestra

Seeing a performance on your next night out is a fun and easy way to patronize the arts. Catch one of the final shows of the season, like Ballet Pensacola’s Don Quixote (April 4-6) or the Choral Society of Pensacola’s Amazing Grace (May 17). If you like what you see, treat your future self to a ticket subscription for next season.

Local organizations put their immense talent on full display at incredibly creative, one-of-a-kind special events throughout the year. Be one of the first to enjoy Pensacola’s new rooftop event space at Ballet Pensacola’s Sangria at Sunset on March 29th. Cut loose with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra at a rousing Jazz Brunch in support of education programs on April 6th. Later in the month, party with the sublime and the strange at the Pensacola Little Theatre’s annual Cabaret fundraiser on April 12th

These groups don’t just entertain, they actively invest in our community through education. Budding talents of all ages can learn through classes, camps, and workshops taught by professional artists. Ballet Pensacola, the Pensacola Opera, and the Pensacola Little Theatre all offer summer camps and programs that bolster students’ confidence and creativity through the arts.

These performing arts organizations are invaluable to our dynamic city. Let’s rally behind them with our time, money, and attention to ensure that they can continue to educate and entertain Pensacola for many years to come.

A LABOR OF LOVE:

Preserving Pensacola’s Past

David and Tonya Del Gallo’s Dedication to Historic Preservation and Renovation in Pensacola

ARTICLE BY BIANCA BAIN VILLEGAS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SBDB IMAGES
David and Tonya Del Gallo

David Del Gallo’s passion for historic preservation spans over four decades, beginning with his work at the Morette Company, where he honed his craft for 45 years. After retiring from the company, David didn’t step away from his passion—he embraced it full time through his own venture, Advanced Construction Services. Together with his wife, Tonya, he has worked tirelessly to restore Pensacola’s most cherished landmarks and homes, breathing new life into the city’s rich architectural history.

David and Tonya’s journey into preservation started when they began purchasing homes in need of renovation, and it quickly became clear that their love for historic homes was more than just a hobby—it was a calling. While their personal passion is historic preservation, most of the work they do is in East Hill, and not all of it is historically driven. Whether it’s renovating a kitchen, updating a bathroom, or restoring an entire home, they’re able to handle any kind of renovation. Their versatility and commitment to quality make them a go-to for many homeowners looking to update their properties, whether those projects are rooted in history or simply about enhancing functionality and design.

In 2002, David and Tonya had just completed restoring their previous home, a project so impressive that it had been featured in the Pensacola News Journal. After that monumental effort, they thought they were done. But then, David found a Greek Revival home that captured his heart. When he first introduced Tonya to the house, it was in dire condition— orange shag carpet, window units, and makeshift window coverings. But Tonya saw potential. “How do you think your furniture would look in that house?” David asked, and with that simple question, they embarked on a transformative journey.

The previous owners, Mr. and Mrs. Russell, were thrilled when David and Tonya completed the renovation, knowing that their memories remained intact while the house had been lovingly restored. From the seven antique fireplaces to the structural repairs and insulation, David ensured that every part of the home maintained its historical integrity while adapting to modern needs. The extreme attention to detail in their home speaks volumes about their passion for preservation. Inspired by Victorian design, every tapestry, hand-painted

wallpaper, and needlepoint was carefully selected to complement the home’s historical charm. Each lighting antique and rewired fixture was chosen to enhance the space, while the antique dining room set and complete three-piece master bedroom set were restored to their former glory. Not to mention the 1836 Steinway piano and real pirate’s chest, which add layers of history and character to their home. The carefully curated antique seating, furniture, and decorative tchotchkes—crystal, porcelain figurines, and other treasures—complete the story of the home.

For David, each project—whether personal or professional—is more than just construction work; it’s a labor of love, a way to connect with the past and make it relevant for future generations.

As Pensacolians, David and Tonya are driven by a deep sense of responsibility to protect the unique heritage of their town. Their commitment to preservation extends beyond their own home. They’ve worked on a number of significant projects, including the Ella Jordan Museum, where David was called in by architect Eddie Todd to assist with its renovation. This cultural heritage project was not just about restoring a building—it was about preserving the story of Pensacola for the community and future generations to experience.

ELLA JORDAN MUSEUM

David Del Gallo and Advanced Construction Services (ACS) played a key role in the renovation of the Ella Jordan Museum, preserving its historical integrity while updating its structure. Collaborating with architect Eddie Todd, they helped restore the museum as a cultural heritage landmark, ensuring its continued importance to the Pensacola community and maintaining the rich history it represents.

“For David and Tonya Del Gallo, historic preservation isn’t just about bricks and mortar— it’s about community, heritage, and a sense of place. ”

David’s work is defined by a rare combination of expertise, respect for history, and passion. It’s clear that he doesn’t just see old homes or buildings; he sees stories—stories that need to be protected, told, and passed on. One of the most powerful examples of this is when he and Tonya saved a historic house across the street from their own. Developers wanted to tear it down, but David and Tonya refused to sell it to someone who wouldn’t honor its history. Instead, they found buyers who were committed to restoring it. For David, that wasn’t just a transaction—it was a personal mission to ensure that the history of Pensacola remained intact.

After a half century in the industry, David’s transition to his own business, Advanced Construction Services, has allowed him to work more directly on his passion for preservation. He has taken on countless projects through his company, over the last 20+ years, each one another opportunity to protect Pensacola’s unique architectural character. For David and Tonya Del Gallo, historic preservation isn’t just about bricks and mortar—it’s about community, heritage, and a sense of place.

Every renovation project they take on is a reflection of their dedication to preserving the past, but they are equally committed to making any home or space more functional and beautiful. Whether it’s a historical renovation or simply updating a kitchen or bathroom, their work is about enhancing the spaces that define a home. It’s more than just fixing up old houses; it’s about honoring the legacy of the people who built them, telling the stories they hold, and ensuring that future generations can experience the same sense of wonder and connection. Pensacola’s history is alive in these buildings, and through their work, David and Tonya ensure that history endures, enriching the lives of everyone who calls this city home.

Savor The Lifestyle: A Conversation

“Being vulnerable one is able to feel the connection and intimacy necessary for a healthy lifestyle.”

“Talk is cheap” as the saying goes, or is it? Most of us have heard this old phrase used in reference to actions as opposed to words. Even Keith Richards, the drummer from the Rolling Stones, decided to put it to music and make public his feud with Mick Jagger back in the 80’s. But let’s step back for a moment and think about this thought in a different frame of light. What value does a good conversation have? What is a good conversation worth to you, especially around the dinner table? Does it make your food taste better? Is laughter a natural part of your conversations? How do we even define what a “good” conversation is?

Here is a hint. One night last week, I was heading home late from a meeting. Driving down a dark, winding road, I came upon a local brewery and decided to stop for a bite to eat. It was quiet, not too many tables occupied since my timing was after the supper rush. I decided to sit at the small bar of about 10 stools since it was “just me”. Not long after I was seated, a couple in their late 50s sat at the bar and I immediately felt an intimate energy emanating from them. Their laughter and playful banter was infectious to the waitress and myself. Their conversation and intensity for each other drew everyone in around them as we enjoyed the world they had created for themselves unfold before our eyes. I caught myself leaning to hear their words and their laughter enveloped me in a warm hug. As I scanned the other tables in the restaurant looking for similar energy and investment in the conversation at the tables, disappointingly, I found none. At one point, the wife gave a laugh that was so sensual

in nature, I blushed. It was obvious they had been married for years and knew everything about one another and loved every last bit of each other, flaws and all. This is the type of conversation that brings joy and fulfillment to feed our souls and heightens all of our senses to connect with one another and our surroundings, an unparalleled experience.

We as humans must connect through deliberate, purposeful, and intentional conversation that is openended and spontaneous to where we are fully present and yes, vulnerable. By being vulnerable one is able to feel the connection and intimacy necessary for a healthy lifestyle. An open, intimate and vulnerable conversation with similar individuals where we learn to make eye contact, respond to each other’s body language, to comfort one another, and respectfully challenge one another’s knowledge is necessary for growth as individuals, and as a family. This is the type of environment where empathy not only grows but flourishes. And, as Ms. Sherry Turkle, an author and professor at M.I.T., wisely observes, in participating with this kind of conversation, we learn who we truly are.

Additionally, Ms. Turkle, in her New York Times article, “Stop Googling. Let’s Talk.”, summarizes a 2010 study conducted over a 30 year period, by the psychologist Sara Konrath, finding a 40 percent decline in empathy among college students, with most of the decline taking place after the year 2000. The decline in empathy and rise of apathy is even reflected in our daily relationship with food. Without empathy, we are unable to emotionally connect, removing our ability

to experience joy, happiness, intimacy and passion. In our busy lives, we tend to not plan our meals and dinner parties as years past. Our lack of dining and its preparation prevents the feeling of anticipation and connection through food, family and friends at our next meal. Dining well is a passionate, sensory experience of empathic intimacy with food and conversation that is a necessary journey for a fulfilling lifestyle that can easily get lost in a world of technology.

Ms. Turkle further elaborates that we have to prepare ourselves for conversation, no different than our mealtimes. “The capacity for empathic conversation goes hand in hand with the capacity for solitude. In solitude, we find ourselves; we prepare ourselves to come to conversation with something to say that is authentic, ours…. If we are not content to be alone, we turn others into the people we need them to be. If we don’t know how to be alone, we’ll only know how to be lonely…. When we are secure in ourselves, we are able to really hear what other people have to say. At the same time, conversation with other people, both in intimate settings and in larger social groups, leads us to become better at inner dialogue.” Ms. Turkle describes this intentional evolution as a virtuous

circle that links conversation to the capacity for self-reflection. Our relationship with food is similar in its virtues through its preparation and nourishment for our body, heart and soul.

Study after study shows this vital part of our existence is the main reason our relationships are falling apart. So, how do we change? First, we must acknowledge there is an issue. Second, we begin connecting at a deeper level. And we begin those connections with simple dining around the dinner table at home with our family and friends where we have a soft, nonjudgemental place to practice. Lest we forget a place where we are brought together with food and conversation to nourish our bodies and minds daily. And when you are alone, practice by yourself through imagination and concentration, learning how to listen to you. True, intimate relationships with ourselves and others are only brought about by intimate conversations and are always worth the risk. Never forget, the art of conversation is worth its weight in gold and so are you.

Wine Hunting

Are you a Wine Hunter? The word “hunting” can bring to mind different images for different people. I take the meaning in a more classical sense, keeping it to a descriptive action, in this case “the deliberate pursuit of.” Wine hunting for me is the enjoyable and thoughtful pursuit of something special, NOT necessarily something expensive. Do you enjoy searching, even infrequently, for a unique or special bottle of wine? If so are you successful in obtaining your quarry, or do you end up being frustrated?  Let’s take a look at some good wine hunting techniques that can guarantee success.

First, why would you find yourself hunting for a wine? Do you have a special dinner coming up, or are you a collector? Even the staunchest beer drinkers I know all have a self-described “nice” bottle of wine at home that can be brought out like a trophy during a special occasion. Others I know are much more deliberate, hunting for investment grade wines that have the ability to age for years, destined to adorn the next open space in beautiful wine rooms. Therefore we encounter the first question that you must answer before setting out on your wine hunt: When will this wine be enjoyed, within a year, or more?

Hunting for a special wine to be enjoyed within a year is easier but more expensive. Quality wine is made from quality grapes, with extra attention paid from harvest, through the wine making, to the bottling. Some of this quality wine is meant to be aged, but in our modern era of wine consumption, most are meant to be enjoyed upon release. Therefore you need to determine if the wine is ready to be enjoyed now or will it get better with time. Some research and or advice is necessary here to determine which one it is. If you buy a bottle that will benefit from aging young, and age it yourself, you

will pay relatively less. Time equals money, so if the wine maker has done the aging themselves, expect to pay more, but remember: Price does not equal good wine on its own.

Next, and most importantly, where to conduct your hunt? NOT AT THE GROCERY STORE!!! Grocery story wines are ALL mass produced, even the “expensive” ones generally lack anything unique, and all are over-priced, even when on sale! I have no issue grabbing a bottle for tonight’s family dinner, but steer clear of the grocery store if your intention is to bring home something to be proud of. We, here in Pensacola, are blessed with some great local wine shops. Find one that you like, with people who you trust, and go hunt there. Describe the wine you are hunting for in terms of flavors (taste), and feel. Use descriptive weapons like fruit forward, velvety, earthy, citrus, and one of my favorites, mouth-watering. Those describe attributes of tannin (for reds), acid, and alcohol. An even easier approach – taste the wine before you buy it! We have a lot of local wine tastings. If you are not comfortable with using your words to bag your trophy, then just taste your way to a win.

Whether you are hunting for your next investment grade wine or out in pursuit of something special for next week, picking the best game rich locations and choosing the right descriptive weapons are essential in guaranteeing success. Do this enough and before you know it you just might find yourself on a full Wine Safari, hunting for that next special bottle. Just wait until you have returned home to yell “Tally Ho!”

A 3-Ingredient Wonder from Paris to Your Home

There’s something undeniably comforting about the aroma of freshly baked bread filling your home. It wraps around you like a warm embrace, turning even the simplest moments into something extraordinary.  The beauty of this bread recipe lies in its simplicity. With self-rising flour, a touch of sugar, and the magic of beer, you can create a golden loaf with a tender crumb and a hearty crust.  Why Beer? Beer is the not-so-secret ingredient that brings this recipe to life. Not only does it help the dough rise, but its natural yeast and carbonation add a distinct richness to the bread. Whether you prefer a light lager or a dark stout, the type of beer you choose will influence the final flavor. Experiment to find your favorite combination!

1. Combine ingredients and have extra flour for dusting.

2. Preheat oven to 450 degrees with a lidded dutch oven lined with wax paper inside.

3. Pull out dutch oven and drop the dough inside (dough does not need resting after mixing).

4. Cover and place in oven for 30 minutes.

5. Uncover and leave in the oven 30 more minutes.

6. Let rest 10 min. and serve.

• 3 cups self-rising flour
