Hello, Perimeter North.

n sixth grade, I came home one day to find blue shag carpet newly installed in my bedroom. Down the hall, my little sister was rolling around on her new multi-shade pink shag flooring. Ah, that smell. We were rich, I thought! Mom added a blue patchwork quilt (procured from a fund raising auction at the preschool where she taught), arranged a collage of fish-shaped baskets on my wall, moved a sweet little desk and chair into my room and, voila, the redecoration was complete. Those wicker fish inspired us, launching my fish collection: boxes, pendants, paper weights, tapestries and more. I was a swimmer (though not a Pisces) and had a book about Photo by Samantha Shal Jacques Cousteau and often dreamed at a young age that I could breathe under water. I loved fish and perhaps my mom picked up on this, instilling a new tradition and teaching me to nest. Stephanie and Cuyler Duncan have created a beautiful nest-like home for their girls, perched among the trees on a wooded lot on Mt. Vernon Parkway in Sandy Springs. The living room in the mid-century modern home has floor to ceiling windows and the day Samantha Shal shot the home for this month's feature story, blurry raindrops trailed down the glass wall creating a dreamy scene for us. Northside Hospital and Gwinnett Medical Center announced that they have approved a non-binding letter of intent (LOI) to begin exclusive discussions to combine their operations. If a final agreement is reached, the merger would create a major health care system serving rapidly growing areas of the Atlanta Region and North Georgia. Anchored by Northside Hospital in Sandy Springs and Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, the system also would include hospitals in Canton, Cumming and Duluth, as well as cancer treatment centers, imaging centers, medical office buildings, urgent care centers and other outpatient locations throughout the state. Altogether, the Northside-Gwinnett Medical combined system would have nearly 1,400 beds, more than 16,000 employees and close to 3,500 physicians on staff. Northside Hospital CEO Bob Quattrocchi and Gwinnett Medical Center CEO Philip Wolfe said they are targeting early 2016 as a potential closing date for the deal. Meanwhile, the two organizations will conduct due diligence and planning activities. If a final definitive agreement is reached, the proposed transaction will be submitted to the State of Georgia Office of the Attorney General for review and approval, including at least one public hearing on a date to be determined.

The Westminster Schools has again earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR certification, which signifies that the building performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA. This marks the second consecutive year that Westminster has received this certification. To earn the ENERGY STAR certification, The Westminster Schools ensured that all of its buildings throughout campus use 35 percent less energy and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than similar buildings across the nation. Westminster improved its energy performance by managing energy strategically across the entire campus and by making cost-effective improvements to its facilities. MARISTS MERIT MERITS Three Marist School seniors—Charles Daniel, Theresa Denniss and Courtney Peters—have been named semifinalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program competition. These academically talented Marist students will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million. National Merit Scholarship Finalists will be notified in February 2016. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. ould you be surprised to learn that women would prefer gaining weight to losing their hair, especially if it’s permanent hair loss? Weight can be lost, but when hair’s gone, it’s gone. “Hair loss stinks for any reason,” says Rebecca Walden, a Brookhaven resident, proclaimed “Wigspert of Atlanta” by a client, one of many whom she has helped feel more beautiful. Her clients include cancer patients, whose hair loss is typically temporary, and women with alopecia or another physical condition that results in permanent hair loss. Parker Hammond is a beautiful 16-year old North Atlanta High School junior, with long blond hair, diagnosed in May with early onset alopecia, an autoimmune skin disease resulting in hair loss. After months of feeling low and frustrated, she beamed with confidence brushing her new wig, showing off her “new” look, which actually looks exactly like her beautiful self! Her mother fought back tears of relief and joy. “I am so glad to have my daughter back.” They were at the Steve Hightower Hair Salon in Buckhead where Rebecca is now happily based. Steve was combing Parker’s new hair, showing her how to brush the bangs softly to frame her adorable face. “If it looks good, I feel good,” she says. “It’s so lightweight!” For Parker and all of Rebecca’s clients with permanent hair loss, Rebecca is a friend for life. She makes them feel confident every time they step out the door. You’ve probably seen some of Rebecca’s clients up close and personal in the past and never even suspected the woman was wearing a wig. Wigs, particularly among caucasian women, are viewed as a last resort when they experience hair loss. “We only see bad wigs. There are people all around you every day, and that’s not their hair! We only notice bad wigs, so we feel negatively about the word wig,” says Rebecca. "There is some stigma, true, but most people have no idea I am wearing one," says Lori Raney, of Honeycutt Creed furniture design in Buckhead. "As a mother of six, my hair was thinning significantly and six years ago I found Rebecca. My new hair has become a part of me." “Rebecca is remarkably and uniquely gifted to do what she does,” says Lisa Simmons of Roswell, who also received a cancer diagnosis. “It takes a very special person to remain upbeat and encouraging while dealing with people’s fear and anxiety. She is more than a wig consultant – she is a therapist in leather pants and crazy jewelry.” 14

he large framed crisp black and white photographs lining the two-story wall of the inconspicuous mid-century modern home tucked into a wooded hill along Mt. Vernon Parkway are all by Stephanie Duncan. Gummy smiles of baby Carson (now 7) and Sawyer (3), and shots of happy dad Cuyler hugging his girls. There are two or three pictures of Stephanie, though, taken by a friend on a special day. “A-day.” The day Stephanie and Cuyler legally adopted Sawyer, raising their hand in pledge at the courthouse. “This changed our life entirely. Changed us at our core,” says Stephanie, stay-athome mom, lifestyle blogger and stylist. “We are now big supporters of adoptive families and I’ve had the pleasure of helping other couples through the process. We have become very open, too. And adventurous as a family!” The Duncans love an adventure and since buying the 2,500 square feet early last year, they have discovered living in a (half ) glass house feeds them entirely. The living room pours out into the thick woods at the back of the home, through 20’ wall-to-wall windows along dark polished wood floors and a huge sheep skin carpet . Some of the more important pieces of furniture, favorite accessories and a new king size organic mattress are all products of branding collaborations Stephanie has cured with local companies. a former owner was a chef and the Duncans have added their touches by painting annoyingly bright kitchen tile soft grey, replacing dated track lighting with functional mod Ikea shades and dotted the walls with collectibles (ukeleles) and personal art (framed drawings by Stephanieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s architect brother). A granite wall starts at the front of the property, framing the garage, trailing through the kitchen and family room, adding a cohesive textural component to the home, already teaming with personality, confidence and thoughtful details. Parting Thoughts

ne of my dear friends is a painter who sees the world through her amazing artist eyes. When she was the newbie in our neighborhood, her heart was sensitive to how to integrate her family into the community. Driving one day she noticed how birds perched on a telephone wire seemed to choose when to gather, and who to pause with. As she watched the birds sit, and then come and go, those birds spoke to her of how we create community, who we keep counsel with, and even the dynamic nature of the process. She had moved in down the street, and it was my love of her work that initially drew us together. We shared a moment of connection on my front porch steps, and lingered like birds chatting on the telephone wire, before we flew off back to our hectic lives. Over the years, through working on house projects, painting together, building a club, learning new skills together, cooking meals together, playing cards as couples, we’d pause from the “flights” our lives demanded (me flying around in my minivan and she in her Mini Cooper) to sit like those birds on a wire and talk over tea. This is how we became friends. That is community. That is how community begins and how it grows. These one-on-one connections expand and extend and become a beautiful web of interconnectedness.
