Lifestyle Letter

Hello

MAY 2016

M

Photo Timothy C. Sparling

ore than ever, I yearn to go places I've never been. It could be because my children are older and don't require quite the on-location mothering (two out of three have flown the coop, anyways). Or, perhaps I read too many travel magazines and have adventurous friends who post too many gorgeous adventure photos on social media. Maybe my appetite was whetted during our eight years as expats living in the Virgin Islands, UK and Hong Kong. Then, there’s the possibility that as I get older, I feel the need to see more and do more while I am still fit and able. Putting this issue together did not help. Now, I want to visit all the places our Lifestyle Publications photographers have been recently. Check out the spread, “A Beautiful World,” where some of our talented staffers share their fave pics. The picture to the left is of me and my brother-in-law John in an ice cave last winter along the frozen shoreline of Lake Michigan. And, before my next trip, I want to pack like the fabulous personal stylist to the stars, Robanne Schulman, whose company Plaid Monkey outfits men and women right here in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody as they board planes, trains or minivans. The “sensible shoes” she chose for our “Carry On” travel gear feature surprised me, but heck, I’ll give them a try if she recommends them. I’ll sure turn some heads, if not an ankle. When I asked Laura Flusche, the executive director at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) for her favorite museums to visit around the globe, she came back with five gems you will want to add to your must-do list. I love visiting museums anytime, but there’s something magical about spending time in a museum in another city, hearing snippets of art-appreciating conversation in different languages. I hope this issue inspires conversations about your next trip. Share your stories and photos with us (email me or post them on our social media). Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers who make coming home after a trip so very nice.

Exploring the Netherlands and Belgium by river with AmaWaterways THIS ‘TULIPS & BEER’ CRUISE WAS UNFORGETTABLE

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY DENNIS MALCOLM BYRON

W

henever the opportunity arises, I emphasize that traveling is one of the best things to do in one’s lifetime. Seeing the world, its marvels, interacting with people, indulging in fare, and simply breathing air in a completely different environment is unmatched. I fortunately had the opportunity to do all while spending eight days with AmaWaterways’ inaugural “Tulips & Beer” cruise during the spring of 2015. Renowned for their exploration of the world via its picturesque river routes including Asia, Africa, and Europe, my years of extensive beer journalism under the alias “Ale Sharpton” granted me the opportunity to experience a significant portion of the latter continent. Specifically, sailing down Dutch and Belgian waterways inside a luxurious ship boasting fine dining, unlimited beverages, smiling service, fellow wide-eyed explorers primarily from the U.S., and yes, Wi-Fi, this was an unforgettable trip. What made it even more monumental was that everyone onboard began to develop a family-like atmosphere due to the intimacy of the 360-foot long, four-deck AmaLyra that carries up to 148 passengers as opposed to a colossal cruise line that hosts a virtual mall-like experience on a Saturday. Certainly, beer tastings and lectures run by fellow beer authority, author and columnist from Philadelphia, PA—Don Russell aka Joe Sixpack—along with dinners, and group activities made our ship that much more cohesive as well. (I did my part to orchestrate epic, late-night bottle shares as well.) The eight-day journey began in Amsterdam, followed by the exploration in Arnhem, Nijmegen, Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent, Willemstad, and others. While the emergence of gorgeous flowers—especially tulips—and indulging in exotic beers were the main themes, I made it a point to shoot anything I could to demonstrate how wondrous and enchanting this adventure was. I trust you will enjoy what I selected from the few hundred of my portfolio. Again, make it a prerogative to explore the world whenever possible; by sea with AmaWaterways is an obvious recommendation.

BROUWERIJ GRUUT, GHENT, BELGIUM

Besides extraordinary beers made with brewing methods dating back centuries including using spices in place of today’s popular hops, Gruut’s frequented urinals were also worth a photo. A BOTTLE SHARE AT THE BRINK BAR IN NIJMEGEN, NIJMEGEN, NETHERLANDS

Following an insightful tour of De Hemel Brewery based at the municipality of Nijmegen in the Netherlands, our group set up an impromptu tasting at a very accommodating bar loaded with quality selections called Brink. Awesomeness. THE TOP OF THE AMALYRA

This is the top floor of the 360-foot long, four-deck AmaLyra during one of the gorgeous nights along the quiet river routes during the trip. With a slight chill, a clear view for miles, and the uniform chairs surrounded by the track, I had to take this one.

BELGIUM WAFFLES IN, WELL, BELGIUM

You can’t go to Belgium and not have one of their world-famous waffles! Fresh whipped cream, powdered sugar, and recently picked strawberries in a small Brussels café will make anyone’s morning, afternoon or evening. You choose. Housemade Belgian chocolate syrup, bananas, and other delectable toppings are optional. CANTILLON BREWERY, BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

Cantillon is one of the most renowned and sought-after breweries globally. Popularly deemed the father of the increasingly popular “sour” beers due to their unique wild yeasts and bacteria used with spontaneous fermentation, this family-owned marvel is a self-proclaimed time machine and for good reason: They use the same equipment and methods to brew Framboises, Gueuzes, Faros and Krieks to name a few since its debut in the 1900. This photo gives a feel of its praised absence of modern technology. THE BEER TEMPLE

Amsterdam, Netherlands Beer is big (among other things) in Amsterdam, but there are very few bars that carry U.S. craft beers—especially the bitter, aromatic and extremely popular American India Pale Ales. This is where you go to preserve your patriotism with 30 craft breweries on tap and more than 60 in a bottle pouring everything from Grand Rapid’s Founders, to Athens, Georgia’s Terrapin and Stone in San Diego, California. Oh, and look for an Ale Sharpton sticker or two while there. They definitely showed me love. Dennis Malcolm Byron aka Ale Sharpton is a world-renowned beer authority, award-winning journalist, blogger (AleSharpton.com), photographer event planner, show host (Cruisin’ For A Brewsin’) and gourmand. He proudly resides in Atlanta. Follow him on Twitter @alesharpton and Instagram @realalesharpton. 16

Five Must-see Museum We asked Museum of Design Atlanta's Executive Director Laura Flusche for her five favorite museums across the globe. Add these to your travel bucket list! 1 PEREZ ART MUSEUM, MIAMI What other museum offers a gorgeous bay view

from a lovely terrace that’s great for sipping a beverage and relaxing? Pritzker Prize winning architects Herzog & de Meuron thought outside the sterile box that’s typical of American museums when they designed the Perez Art Museum. The exhibitions — which highlight Miami’s location at the crossroads of the Americas —provide viewers with new views on modern and contemporary art by emphasizing the cultural diversity that characterizes Miami. My perspective always shifts a bit when I visit and I like to spend time processing new ideas and chilling on the terrace after a trip through the galleries. 2 GALLERIA BORGHESE, ROME The city of Rome is filled with jaw-dropping special effects — most dating to the Baroque era, a time when artists were charged with making the invisible visible. My favorite place to take in Rome’s special effects is the Galleria Borghese, a garden palace built for Cardinal Scipione Borghese in the 17th century. Caravaggio paintings abound if you feel like going over to the dark side, but my favorite artwork at the Galleria Borghese is Apollo and Daphne sculpture by Gianlorenzo Bernini. Bernini accomplishes something amazing with that sculpture: he manages to convince the viewer that they’re seeing a nymph’s body transforming into a tree right before their eyes. And he does so in the least changeable of materials — marble. 3 MOMA’S DESIGN COLLECTION AND EXHIBITIONS, NEW YORK CITY

When in NYC, I love to visit MoMA’s design exhibitions to see what kind of discussion they are provoking. Paola Antonelli, senior curator of architecture & design at MoMA, is loathe to define design, but says that it’s much more than Eames Chairs and Braun toasters. The title of a recent exhibition she curated gets the point across: This is for Everyone: Design for the Common Good. Antonelli’s broad understanding of design is helping her break new ground: she recently put up an exhibition about video games like Minecraft and Tetris and acquired the @ symbol for MoMA’s permanent collection. I’m intrigued by their relatively new acquisition of a painting said to be by the young Michelangelo, while other works in the collection fill my need for Renaissance and Baroque splendor. When I’m there, I can never resist a quick hop next door to the Modern Art Museum designed by Tadeo Ando. Wow. Just wow.

e would follow Robanne Schulman anywhere - to the beach (she'll pack sensational sunglasses), overseas (she will find us a small but mighty suitcase), on a cruise with the family (watch her chose smart

but sexy shoes and a sleek travel jacket with many pockets). The personal stylist from Buckhead says, "when traveling, I always use a carry on, because overpacking is just plain dumb." That's Robanne for you. She's a straight-talking, focused, a ton of fun and just a little sassy. She suggests you pack monochromatic pieces so all of your options can be paired with each other (blacks, whites, grays adding a pop of color with a handbag or jewelry). Robanne is a little obsessed with Pack-It Compression Cubes by Eagle Creek and uses the Briggs and Riley International expandable carry on. It fits both international planes and domestic planes. We asked her to show us how to travel wisely and she shopped right here in Dunwoody and Sandy Springs for some choice pieces for a show and tell, photographed at the beautiful Mandarin Oriental Hotel Atlanta. Robanne Schulman is a premier private wardrobe stylist who brings sophistication, style, convenience and a confident edge in fashion to her clients. She navigates the trends so her clients don’t have to. With contacts from New York to L.A. to Paris, Robanne and Plaid Monkey have built a network of personal entrée at some of the world’s finest stores – getting a fashion insider’s access to exclusive previews, one-of-a-kind pieces and priority selection. Yeah, she’s kind of a big deal. Since founding Plaid Monkey in 2000, Robanne has worked with celebrities, executives, professional athletes and busy men and women across the country who rely on her carefully-honed instinct and relentless pursuit

This remote island is off the coast of Georgia’s Barrier Island, Sapelo, and it is a National Wildlife Refuge. You can only access the island by boat, and once you’re on the island, you can hike the sandy trails to the beach. This photo was shot from “the Boneyard”, a stretch of Blackbeard Island’s beach where driftwood lies. It reminds me of the ‘elephant graveyard’ in The Lion King. Alexa Lampasona

A BEAUTIFUL WORLD (CON TI N U ED)

When arriving in Ghent, I selected the tour route that would eventually lead me to Gruut, a unique brewery known for using blends of spices known as “gruut” instead of hops to craft their beers. This northwestern Belgian city was one of the most memorable destinations of the entire journey. The occasional rain and cloudiness did nothing to stifle its wonders. This graffiti-laced alleyway called Werregarenstraat aka “Grafitti Street” was absolutely astonishing. Reportedly dating back to 1995’s Ghent Festivities festival, this was declared an official site welcoming artists to freely express themselves and simultaneously curb unauthorized building art throughout the city. I could have literally spent hours in here; its communal level of skill and vibrancy makes this jaw dropping. Dennis Malcolm Byron Lightning lights up the night sky outside of Brownfield, Texas on Wednesday, July 15, 2015. This photo was taken on the second night of a month long walkabout across the country. Lightning has always been difficult for me to capture. I have thousands of frames of empty sky so when I actually get a strike, much less three at once, I feel accomplished. Shot with a Nikon D4s.
